Flight booking platform launched by World Travel Centre

Leona Kenny

A new flight booking platform, “designed by travel agents for travel agents” has been launched by World Travel Centre (WTC).

The Fareteam platform is available to agents in both the UK and Ireland.

Its Agent Booking Tool offers access to thousands of fares that are bookable at the click of a button. Global Distribution Services and New Distribution Capability fares are available.

Fareteam says it offers value and efficiency benefits to every size of business, from the one-man band to multi-branch operations.

Aidan Coghlan, Group Managing Director of WTC, believes travel agencies are searching for “simple access to the best value air content” as the industry begins to emerge from the Covid crisis.

“At WTC we used the Covid hiatus to invest and develop Fareteam with an aim to make our customers more competitive and efficient now that demand for long-haul travel is returning,” he said.

“Crucially, Fareteam embraces New Distribution Capability (NDC) where available, in addition to the traditional GDS content. We hope to help customers successfully negotiate this shift and provide them with access to cheaper fares and content not available in the GDS.

Travel agents can request a demo before signing up to the platform.

Which hotels would you recommend? If we stayed elsewhere, how easy is it to reach the trade centre? Any recommendations for accommodation during a 4 day stay? I will be at a conferenhce while my husband will have free tiime.

Crowne Plaza is right on the spot. Radisson Royal is across the river, at least 15 minute walk. The nearest metro is 10-15 minute walk.

Thank you. Is it worth staying near Arabat,to be close to tourist attractions, and to take the metro to the conference? How long will it take?

Arbat is about 20-25 minutes walk from WTC, makes no sense taking the metro from there. What tourist attractions do you want to be close to?

world travel centre

To further Marassa's excellent guidance, see the map at the link below- and the walking path (forget the little squiggle along the river...Google Maps does not work quite right!)

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=nl

"A" is the Crowne Plaza (right at the WTC)..."B" is where the Arbat starts (from the East)...and then heads somewhat diagonally SW for about 1.5 KM, where it ends near the Smolenskaya Metro (the little Red M thingee means Metro!).

As Marassa points out, the nearest Metro station (Vistavochnaya) is about a 10 minute walk...but, if you wanted to go the same "downtown" area directly from near your hotel (here Crowne Plaza), hop the "Light Blue line" (Filevskaya) at the Vistavochnaya Station, and take it to the last stop- the "same" Alexander Garden area...about a 9 minute ride. Note this technically also stops near Arbat, but I THINK somewhat to Marassa's point, once you walk 10 minutes to get to the Metro, you might as well have just walked across the river, taking in the sites, etc...

Note also there is a nice "river cruise" (1 hour) that heads out form near the old Ukraina/now Radisson hotel (need to Google this, check on TA for more info here)...this provides a quite unique view of the city to go along with your "on foot" adventures...

Aha...I somehow thought "price was no object" if you were attending an official event (as in, "employer paying"). A couple of follow up throughts re: more affordable places.

- Rental MAY be an option, but can be very hit or miss - check TA for advice

- Do you or your husband work for a "larger" company that might get "better" rates either at this hotel or other "chains" (Marriott has a boatload of places, even with such discounts, though, pretty expensive (~ $300 I would think)...Or, some hotel web sites offer "advance purchase up to 20-25% lower (still likely over $200!), but need to be100% sure you will go as these are non-refundable. Last but not least, do you have any Marriott or other points as part of a loyalty program?

- IF price remains a huge object, and you end up somewhere else, look for how easy, quick it will be to go back and forth using Metro. Only issue being nearest Metro to WTC is as indicated about a 10 minute walk away...to me, best way to get an idea is ask each place how one would get to the WTC...Best is to be able to go "direct" (rather than have to transfer)...below is a link to a map of the Metro in both Russian and English...WTC is as indicated near the Vistavochnaya Metro Station (light blue line)

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26846803/Moscow%20Metro%20Map%20-%20English%20and%20Russian.pdf

Just one point: I'm not sure Vystavochnaya is any shorter walk from WTC than Ul. 1905 goda, so if it comes to the metro logistics, you can plan around that metro station as well.

Actually, when I mentioned 10-15 minutes walk to the nearest metro, I meant Ul.1905 goda - I used to use that station when I worked in WTC a whopping 20 years ago. Vystavochnaya didn't even exist back then and is quite a walk along the river from WTC.

I did see this was also equidistant...but is the name of the station not "Barrikadnaya"...or I do I have the wrong station in mind/and/or has it been renamed?

My bad on stations...I see the Ulitsa 1905 stop is right after Barrikadnaya!

Bummer...just checked my initial link provided at #4, and it did not seem to have been the map I careful "constructed"...let me know if you want to see the "visual" I was talking about...and this time I will get the Metro stops right!

India advises citizens to avoid travel to Israel, Iran amid heightened risk of military escalation

People attend the funeral procession for seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps members killed in a strike in Syria, which Iran blamed on Israel, in Tehran.

NEW DELHI: India on Friday issued a travel advisory for its citizens planning to travel to Israel or Iran amid a heightened risk of military escalation in West Asia.

“In view of the prevailing situation in the region, all Indians are advised not to travel to Iran or Israel till further notice,” says the statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

All citizens currently residing in Iran or Israel are requested to get in touch with the Indian embassies there and register themselves.

“They are also requested to observe utmost precautions about their safety and restrict their movements to the minimum,” the MEA added.

This advisory comes after Iran accused Israel of launching an airstrike on its consulate in Syria, which led to the deaths of top Iranian military commanders. Tensions between the two countries have mounted. Reports suggest that Israel is preparing for potential military actions by Iran in the days ahead.

France and the US were among the first to issue similar travel advisories for the region.

India has expressed concern over the security situation in West Asia.

“We have noted with concern the attack on Iranian diplomatic premises in Syria on 1 April 2024. India is distressed at the escalating tensions in West Asia, and their potential to fuel further violence and instability. We urge all parties to avoid actions that go against commonly accepted principles and norms of international law," said Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson, MEA.

Earthquake maps show where seismic activity shook the Northeast today

By Lucia Suarez Sang

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 7:51 PM EDT / CBS News

Residents across the Northeast were rattled by a  4.8 magnitude earthquake that shook  the densely populated New York City metropolitan area and much of the surrounding region on Friday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey was quick to release maps showing the spot where the quake was centered, in New Jersey, and the area where it was felt.

The USGS reported the quake occurred about 7 miles north of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. It indicated that the quake might have been felt by more than 42 million people. There were several aftershocks later in the day, including one with a magnitude of 4.0.

Map shows area affected by earthquake centered in New Jersey

People in Baltimore , Philadelphia , New Jersey, Connecticut, Boston and other areas of the Northeast reported shaking. Tremors lasting for several seconds were felt over 200 miles away near the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border.

The map below shows the seismic intensity of the earthquake. The map, which is mostly a lighter shade of blue, shows that the intensity was light to weak, depending on the distance from the epicenter.

Another map released by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre on X, formerly Twitter, highlights the eyewitness reports of shaking and possible damage levels during the seismic event.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams have been briefed on the quake.

"We're taking this extremely seriously and here's why: There's always the possibility of aftershocks. We have not felt a magnitude of this earthquake since about 2011," Hochul said.

People across the region were startled by the rumbling of the quake. One New York City resident told CBS New York's Elijah Westbrook, "I was laying in my bed, and my whole apartment building started shaking. I started freaking out,"

It's not the first time the East Coast and New York City have been hit by an earthquake.

A 5.0 quake was measured in New York City in 1884.

The shaking stirred memories of the Aug. 23, 2011, earthquake that jolted tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada. Registering magnitude 5.8, it was the strongest quake to hit the East Coast since World War II. The epicenter was in Virginia.

That earthquake left cracks in the Washington Monument, spurred the evacuation of the White House and Capitol and rattled New Yorkers three weeks before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Loch Ness monster hunters beg NASA for help on the ‘biggest’ expedition: ‘We are determined’

They’re reaching for the stars.

After 90 years of unsubstantiated Loch Ness monster sightings, Scotland’s Loch Ness Centre has turned to an unlikely source to aid them in their ongoing hunt for Nessie: NASA.

“We are hoping that Nessie hunters around the world will help us reach the people at NASA,” said Aimee Todd, marketing manager for the monster hunting institution, located in Drumnadrochit, per the Independent. “We are hoping to reach them through the power of social media.”

When asked how NASA could help, she explained: “Experts from NASA might have some advanced imaging technology to scan the loch. We would have to sit down and talk to them about how to get it here.”

They hope that the space agency, and other experts, can help them in their latest search, which goes down on the 90th anniversary of the first-ever organized surface watch of Loch Ness.

For the uninitiated, Sir Edward Mountain conducted this flagship expedition from May 30 to June 2 after Aldie Mackay reported seeing a “water beast” in Loch Ness from the Drumnadrochit hotel.

Since that inaugural expedition, the Centre has recorded over 1,156 alleged sightings of the beast . Last year, the newly-revamped organization partnered with Loch Ness Exploration (LNE) to conduct “one of the biggest searches” ever, with hundreds of both in-person and virtual volunteers from all over the world coming together to search for the beast,

The mission reportedly concluded with a hydrophone recording some peculiar underwater noises and several possible Nessie sightings.

Loch Ness Centre general manager Paul Nixon promises that this year’s search will be the “biggest ever” as the team searches for new equipment — hence the NASA callout — to help them “uncover the loch’s biggest mysteries.”

The org believes that agency’s interstellar tech could be integral in this year’s hunt, in which volunteers will be tasked with scouring the Loch’s 21.78 square mile surface for water breaks indicating Nessie’s presence.

Monster hunters will also be searching for the creature via boat and by using a 60-foot hydrophone to listen for mysterious sounds pinging up from the bottom of the Loch. Nessie trackers who can’t get to the lock can still search remotely with the live cameras on the Visit Inverness Loch Ness website.

“This year we are determined to find out more about the elusive Loch Ness Monster,” declared Nixon, who is banking on recruiting said experts in addition to the typical “monster hunters.”

Along with NASA, the center has reportedly reached out to UK university professors, Todd explained. No word as to whether they’ll try and enlist “Loch-heed” Martin in the future.

Ultimately, the org hopes that NASA and can lend their expertise — and perhaps some legitimacy — to the oft-mocked search for Nessie.

“We are just hoping for their expert guidance to help with our ongoing quest to get answers,” said Todd.

Russia-Ukraine war latest: Putin 'may launch all-out bid to seize second city' - as Western officials fear major Russian advance

Russia has launched fresh strikes on critical infrastructure - with Kyiv residents told to cut energy consumption every night for the rest of 2024. Meanwhile, Western officials reportedly fear a major Russian advance - amid concerns Vladimir Putin could launch an attempt to seize Kharkiv.

  • Russia hits critical infrastructure in overnight missile strikes
  • Putin mocks peace conference
  • The big picture : Everything you need to know about the war this week
  • Your questions answered: Is it too late to save Ukraine?

We'll be back tomorrow morning with more updates on the war in Ukraine.

Two Biden administration officials have revealed the extent of China's involvement in Russia's war on Ukraine.

The officials spoke to Reuters news agency and said China has massively increased its sales to Russia of machine tools, microelectronics and other technology to Moscow.

These items are important because Russia is using them to make tanks, aircraft, missiles and other weapons for the war.

They also said:

  • About 90% of Russia's microelectronics came from China
  • Nearly 70% of Russia's approximately $900m in machine tool imports in the last quarter of last year came from China
  • Chinese and Russian entities have been working together to make drones in Russia
  • China is helping Russia improve its satellite and other space-based capabilities for use in the war. This could increase the threat Russia poses across Europe

US President Joe Biden has previously raised concerns with Chinese President Xi Jinping about Beijing's indirect involvement in the war.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen returned this week from a visit to Beijing and said she had warned China that the Biden administration was prepared to sanction Chinese banks, companies and Beijing's leadership if they helped Russia's military in the war.

She has already been given the go-ahead from Mr Biden to sanction financial institutions that help Russia's military-industrial complex.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is due to travel to China for talks next month.

Russia, increasingly isolated economically and diplomatically, has become more reliant on China in recent months.

One official said Chinese materials are helping Moscow undertake its "most ambitious defence expansion since the Soviet era and on a faster timeline than we believed possible early on in this conflict".

"Our view is that one of the most game-changing moves available to us at this time to support Ukraine is to persuade the PRC (China) to stop helping Russia reconstitute its military industrial base. Russia would struggle to sustain its war effort without PRC input," the official said.

Chinese Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu told Reuters that Beijing has not provided weapons to any party and that it is "not a producer of or party involved in the Ukraine crisis".

"We urge the US side to refrain from disparaging and scapegoating the normal relationship between China and Russia."

If Russia defeats Ukraine it will be a "turning point in history", former UK prime minister Boris Johnson says.

Writing in the Daily Mail, he criticised Western countries for not providing Ukraine with the weapons it needs to defeat Russia.

"Every week in which we fail to do the obvious — and give the Ukrainians the weapons they need — is a week in which Putin gets closer to his disgusting ambition, to torture a European country to death.

"Every day the pressure on the Ukrainians is growing — and yet the solution is within our grasp."

Mr Johnson, who visited Ukraine a number of times during his premiership, said: "A defeat for Ukraine would usher in a new era of fear in the whole Euro-Atlantic area, as Putin continues his drive to rebuild the Soviet empire: from the Baltics to Georgia to Moldova to Central Asia to the Arctic.

"It will be a terrifying moment for the people of Taiwan and the clearest possible signal to China that the West has lost the willpower to protect democracy.

"It will be a turning point in history, the moment when the West finally loses its post-war hegemony, the moment when borders everywhere are suddenly up for grabs and aggression is seen to pay — and all because of a failure to stand up for Ukraine."

Mr Johnson warned the world is "on a knife-edge, with a real risk that Western democracies are about to be humiliated, and autocracies emboldened around the world — because of our lassitude, our pathetic refusal to do what is necessary".

He said Ukraine is so short of shells that its troops sometimes have to wait under Russian bombardment because they can't fire back.

The shortage of air defences means Kharkiv, the second-largest city, is "in danger of being turned into another Mariupol", he added.

Ukrainians were able to intercept 90% of incoming strikes, he said, but now "we are starving them, for reasons I do not understand, of the protective shields they need".

Mr Johnson called on the US Congress to approve a $60bn military aid package earmarked for Ukraine and on the Germans to supply Taurus missiles.

The West - including Britain - needs to "snap out of our sleep-walk", he said, adding: "The simplest and most cost-effective way to defend freedom is to invest now in the defence of Ukraine."

Rescue workers in Ukraine have saved five puppies from under the debris of a destroyed building.

The non-residential building was on fire in the north-eastern city of Sumy, close to the border with Russia.

A video from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine showed the firefighters cuddling the squealing puppies and rinsing them off with water.

In a post of the emergency service's Telegram channel, officials said the "little ones" were not injured.

"This rescue story reminds us of the importance of human compassion and the willingness to help everyone, regardless of the circumstances," they added.

Ex-armed forces minister James Heappey has told Sky's defence and security editor Deborah Haynes the UK should consider sending its forces to Ukraine to train troops.

On the Sky News Daily, host Tom Cheshire talks to her and Sky's military analyst Professor Michael Clarke about the interview with Mr Heappey, who stepped down from his role last month.

They assess the bleak situation in Ukraine and why the conflict is at a critical stage. They also discuss how prepared the UK would be if it faced a war in the near future.

A former Ukrainian secret service employee has been injured in Moscow after a device under his car exploded.

Vasily Prozorov suffered leg injuries that are not considered life threatening after the device detonated as he tried to start his car, Radio Free Europe cited Russian media as saying.

According to RFE, Mr Prozorov worked for Ukraine's SBU until 2018.

The following year, he told media in Moscow that he had collaborated with Russia "for ideological reasons" from April 2014 until he left the SBU.

These photos show the damage to a thermal power plant in Kharkiv, eastern Ukraine.

A massive missile and drone attack destroyed and damaged a number of power plants across Ukraine overnight, part of a renewed Russian campaign targeting energy infrastructure.

The Trypilska plant, which was the biggest energy supplier for the Kyiv, Cherkasy and Zhytomyr regions, was struck numerous times, destroying the transformer, turbines and generators.

Vladimir Putin said the attacks were a response to Ukrainian strikes that targeted Russian oil refineries.

In Kharkiv, there were at least 10 other strikes on energy infrastructure, resulting in damage like that seen in these photos.

Ukraine's foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said more than 200,000 people in the region were without power.

Herman Halushchenko, its energy minister, said it was a "large scale, enormous, missile attack that affected our energy sector very badly".

More details have emerged about American Russell Bentley, who is missing in the Russian-controlled Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.

Online news outlet Mash said he disappeared on 8 April after a district in the city of Donetsk was shelled by Ukrainian forces.

Mash cited his wife as saying he had gone to see if anyone needed help but had not returned.

Mr Bentley joined pro-Russian fighters in eastern Ukraine in 2014.

According to Russian news outlet RIA, he later swapped his gun for journalism and worked with state-run news outlet Sputnik.

In a 2022 Rolling Stone interview, he came across as a conspiracy theorist (he said the collapse of the World Trade Towers was a "pre-planned controlled demolition") and a fan of dictators (he described war crimes-accused former Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi as "one of the greatest").

He became a citizen of the Donetsk People's Republic in 2017 and a citizen of Russia in 2020, said the interview, which was headlined The Bizarre Story Of How A Hardcore Texas Leftist Became A Frontline Putin Propagandist.

In words similar to those of Russia's president Vladimir Putin, Mr Bentley described the Ukrainian military as "genuine mass-murdering Nazis", also claiming their ranks were swelled by "thousands of ISIS cannibals" - claims that have been widely dismissed by commentators.

The Netherlands will provide Ukraine with an additional €1bn (£850m) in military support this year, and has earmarked three-times that amount for next year.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte delivered the news in a social media post.

The extra support in 2024 takes the total sum for this year to €3bn (£2.56bn), along with €400m (£340m) to support Ukraine's economy, Mr Rutte said.

"Ukraine must win this battle - for their and our safety," he said.

Dozens of Russian military instructors have arrived in the African country of Niger.

The move is part of a new agreement with Niger's leaders, who recently cut ties with the West.

The Tele Sahel broadcaster showed footage of a Russian transport plane arriving at Niamey airport on Wednesday night.

It said Russia would help to "install an air defence system... to ensure complete control of our airspace", according to comments reported by news agency AFP.

The Russian military instructors are from African Corps, the Russian defence ministry's paramilitary group. They are also seen as the successor to the Wagner mercenary group in the continent.

Niger's elected president Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown last year by the junta and they cut military and diplomatic ties with former colonial power France, as well as ending an agreement with the US.

Niger has been struggling with increased violence from Islamic State and it is also concerned about Boko Haram militants along its border with Nigeria.

According to the Council of Foreign Relations, Russia's growing influence in Africa has come as some African countries are frustrated with the failures of Western intervention and resentful over their own lack of representation in international institutions.

The CFR says Russia is trying to "gain more support for its vision of a multi-polar world order based on weakened Western influence". We have seen Moscow lobby African countries for support in the United Nations on votes regarding the Ukraine conflict, for example.

Russia is also interested in Africa's vast natural resources (including gold, diamonds, uranium and oil), but it is far from an economic powerhouse in the continent - less than 1% of its foreign direct investment goes there.

2024 solar eclipse map: Where to see the eclipse on April 8

These 2024 solar eclipse maps will help you make the best decision about where and how to watch the total solar eclipse on Monday (April 8).

map of north america showing the path of the april 8 solar eclipse

It's finally here: Today, (April 8) a total solar eclipse will pass across the skies North America, giving more than 33 million people living in 15 U.S. states a rare view of the totally-obstructed sun, and — weather permitting — a taste of some seriously strange eclipse phenomena .

If you’re wondering where the total and partial phases of the eclipse will be visible, the good news is that almost everyone in the contiguous U.S. will be able to see the celestial spectacle to some extent. But for a more detailed view of the eclipse’s path, take a look at these handy eclipse maps, courtesy of GreatAmericanEclipse.com.

Solar eclipse 2024 path of totality map

Map of path of totality across North America of solar eclipse, tilted to show its full path over mexico and canada

Totality is the moment that every eclipse-chaser lives for: The moment when the moon completely covers the sun’s face, resulting in a brief but eerie darkness in the daytime. The path of totality , shown in the map above, is the path of the moon’s shadow across Earth’s surface.

On Monday (April 8), totality will begin in Sinaloa, Mexico, then move northeast up to Texas, ultimately crossing 15 states before moving on to Canada. The states where totality will be visible are: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine — although Tennessee and Michigan will only be glanced by the moon's shadow.

Related: April 8 solar eclipse: What time does totality start in every state?

Viewers MUST be within the path of totality to witness the total phase of the eclipse; if you are off the path by even a mile, you will only see a partial eclipse, and miss out on the spooky daytime darkness. Furthermore, the closer you are to the center of the path of totality, the longer totality will last for you — up to a maximum duration of 4 minutes, 27 seconds in Torreón, Mexico.

Note: Totality is the ONLY TIME when it is safe to view the sun without protective eyewear like certified solar eclipse glasses . You must protect your eyes during the entire partial phase of the eclipse, no matter where you are.

Solar eclipse 2024 partial eclipse map

A map of total and partial eclipse coverage across North America on April 8, 2024.

If you live in the U.S. and can’t make it to the path of totality, a partial eclipse still awaits you on April 8. The entire contiguous U.S. will have some view of the partial eclipse, ranging from 99% coverage of the sun just off the path of totality to about 15% coverage far to the northwest of the path.

The map above shows how much of the sun’s disk will be blocked from your location. Watching the partial phases of the eclipse — which last about an hour and 20 minutes before and after totality — means wearing protective eyewear at all times. Failure to do so could result in permanent eye damage, according to NASA .

If you want to experience the celestial spectacle but don’t have a pair of eclipse glasses handy, there are many other ways to safely enjoy the partial eclipse . These include making a homemade pinhole projector , using a pasta strainer to project the shadow of the moon onto the ground or watching one of the various eclipse live streams available.

2024 eclipse travel maps

If you want to see totality but don’t live within the path, driving or taking public transit to a city within the path may be possible. The map above shows how far the drive is to the path of totality, based on where you’re coming from. Meanwhile, the map below shows the most populated cities within the path of totality — many of which are expected to be flooded with millions of eclipse tourists on April 8.

The biggest cities within the path of totality include: San Antonio, Dallas, Austin and Fort Worth in Texas; Indianapolis, Indiana; Hamilton and Montreal in Canada; and Torreón and Mazatlan in Mexico.
