After a fantastic 2024 opener at The Sentry, the PGA Tour heads to Honolulu for the Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club. While it’s not a signature event, this year’s field boasts plenty of star power.

Defending champion Si Woo Kim is joined by Matt Fitzpatrick, Ludvig Aberg, Tyrrell Hatton, Sahith Theegala, Brian Harman and Justin Rose. After a final-round 7-under 66 in Maui, Kim tied for 25th at The Sentry.

Will Zalatoris is also in the field and will be making his first official Tour start since withdrawing prior to the 2023 Masters. He did tee it up at Tiger Woods’ Hero World Challenge in December, finishing last in the 20-man field.

The Sentry winner Chris Kirk will be a name to watch this week. In ’23, Kirk finished solo third, and in ’21 he grabbed a share of second. Overall, Kirk has five top-10 finishes — four of which are top-5s — at the Sony.

Waialae Country Club reminds me of Harbour Town. The two courses look different, but the way they play is similar.

So, for that reason, Matt Fitzpatrick — the 2023 RBC Heritage champion —is going on the card two weeks in a row.

Fitzpatrick went backward with a 5-under final round at The Sentry and tied for 14th. Before that, he finished tied for fourth at the Hero World Challenge.

This will be the Englishman’s first start at Waialae.

Corey Conners (22/1)

Conners didn’t have his best stuff at The Sentry, tying for 33rd despite three rounds in the 60s. In a weaker field and with his course history, it’s tough not to like the Canadian in Honolulu.

In his last four starts at Waialae, Conners has finished 12th (’23), 11th (’22), 12th (’20) and 3rd (’19).

J.T Poston (30/1)

Poston’s week in Maui ended with an 8-under 65 around Kapalua’s Plantation Course, good enough for a T-5 finish.

The two-time Tour winner has made the weekend two years in a row at the Sony Open and finished 21st in ’23. Poston played well here in 2019, too, grabbing 20th.

Ben An (30/1)

An turned in four great rounds at the Plantation Course last week, highlighted by a final-round 66 to vault him into solo fourth.

The 32-year-old made his first Sony Open start last season and grabbed a share of 12th.

Tiger Woods' abrupt exit headlines winners, losers from PGA Tour's underwhelming West Coast swing

Looking back on the highlights and lowlights as the pga tour has concluded its trip around the west coast.

The PGA Tour's West Coast swing has come to an end, and the Tour is now headed to Florida after a quick stop in Mexico for this week's Mexico Open. After the seven-week stretch in Hawaii, California and Arizona, it's time to hand out some awards. This list of winners and losers is not comprehensive but rather a look back at the best of the best and the worst of the worst from the first seven events of 2024.

It was not a great West Coast swing for the Tour, which is unusual because this portion of the schedule normally crushes. Between bad weather, long shot winners and a couple of LIV Golf events that played out a bit better than most expected, the PGA Tour had a tough run. 

It's still early, though, and even though it wasn't a great stretch, it was a good month and a half for a few players. We'll look at those and dive deep on what could have gone differently for a few others in this year's edition of west coast swing winners and losers.

PGA Tour West Coast swing winners, losers

Tiger Woods:  I know the withdrawal from Riviera is not back related, leg related or anything like that, but Woods has now withdrawn or missed the cut at four of his last six events across two years. It doesn't really matter  why  it's happening, only  that  it's happening. And in a year where there was real optimism about how Woods' body was feeling, he had to WD with the flu in his first PGA Tour event since the 2023 Masters. He just does not get enough reps elsewhere for any of this to work. And while he will still enter events and be an interesting draw, he is not playing enough good golf (or enough golf at all) to truly contend for a major or even a regular PGA Tour event at this point in his career.  Verdict: Loser

Sam Burns: Wait ... Sam Burns?! You might not have noticed, but Burns racked up his fourth consecutive top 10 at the Genesis Invitational on Sunday. And while a 71 to lose the American Express to an amateur stings, you could argue that, other than Scottie Scheffler, nobody is playing or scoring better than Burns. It was a fairly quiet stretch, too. Before the Genesis, I probably would have put Justin Thomas into this spot, but J.T. missed the cut while Burns notched another top 10. Now he'll head to Florida where he's been a standout on the greens. He's in an intriguing spot going into the next few weeks, perhaps most specifically at the Players Championship where he has decent showings over the last two years. Verdict: Winner 

Patrick Cantlay: The No. 6 player in the world popped up on leaderboards early at the American Express, Farmers Insurance Open, Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Genesis Invitational. He could not close out a victory in any of the four, however. As my colleague Greg DuCharme pointed out on the First Cut Podcast on Sunday after Cantlay's loss at Riviera Country Club, his scoring averages by round this season are somewhat astonishing.

There is some noise there in Round 3 and Round 4 because some golfers only have one or two weekend rounds played, but the trend is still not good for Cantlay. 

Is this officially a thing for him yet? Maybe it should be. It's slightly unfair to critique Cantlay for not winning when other top guys like Matt Fitzpatrick didn't even come close. But top 10 players in the world deserve to be evaluated from every angle, and Cantlay kicked away several tournaments in a row by the way he played over the last few days of those tournaments. He also completely disappeared with finishes outside the top 50 after good starts at Pebble Beach and Torrey Pines in a way that, say, Burns did not.

Broadly, I give Cantlay the benefit of the doubt when it comes to closing events. He has entered the final round of tournaments inside the top three a total of 24 times as a professional, and overall he's gained an average of 1.8 strokes on the field. That's a good performance. In the eight times where he's led after three rounds, though, he's gained just 0.6 strokes. Combine that with his recent trend, and it paints the picture of somebody who needs to close out a tournament to keep the chatter from ratcheting up. Verdict: Loser

Nick Dunlap: At the start of the West Coast swing, Dunlap was embroiled in figuring out college accounting. By the end of the West Coast swing, he could afford to hire somebody to do all of that. His win at the AmEx was extraordinary and without question the best moment of the first two months of the season. The image of Dunlap in total disbelief with his hands on his head and his mind in the clouds after becoming the first amateur to win a PGA Tour event in 33 years was a great one. And while he's been terrible since then, it doesn't really matter because of what he accomplished in Palm Springs. A career changer. Verdict: Winner

Rory McIlroy: The No. 2 player in the world had two lackluster performances on the West Coast: a T66 at Pebble Beach and a T24 at the Genesis. He's driving it quite well, at least statistically, but he's struggled a bit with the scoring clubs. His approach play at Pebble was awful (partly because of a bad drop and two-stroke penalty that cost him several strokes on one hole), and at Riviera it was his play around the greens. In both tournaments, he was undone early by a massive number. At Pebble, it was a bogey-triple-bogey finish in Round 1. At Riv, it was a double-triple-birdie-bogey finish. He never got back in the tournament after either of those. 

While his mediocre play on the West Coast across seven rounds is offset by a win in the Middle East on the DP World Tour to start the year, his play is always worth keeping an eye on in February and March because of what's on deck for him -- and everyone else -- at the beginning of April. Verdict: Loser

PGA Tour: The West Coast swing normally rules, but this one lacked. Part of that is because LIV raided the cupboard and many of the stars on which the PGA Tour have leaned are gone. Nowhere was that more apparent than Riviera where four of the last eight champions -- Jon Rahm, Joaquin Niemann, Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson -- going into this year's edition were absent. Another is because the superstars that are left did not step up. The shortest winner of a West Coast event this year was Hideki Matsuyama at 60-1. The shortest!

These numbers seem impossible in retrospect. And while Tour proponents will tout the depth of the league and praise the fact that anyone can win at any point (which is a good thing!), the reality is that golf -- as is true with all individual sports -- is a star-driven entity, and the stars -- other than Matsuyama and depending on how you feel about Clark -- were nowhere to be found when it came to raising trophies on the West Coast this year. Verdict: Loser

Will Zalatoris and Hideki Matsuyama: It was the 2021 Masters all over again at Riviera on Sunday, but this time it was with two guys who had not been at their best over the last few months. Matsuyama had his worst statistical year in 2023 but bounced back as emphatically as one can with an historic 62 on Sunday to win Riviera. 

Zalatoris started the Sony Open with a missed cut and plenty of questions. Would the back surgery he had last year affect his swing? Would a change to his swing affect his game? Early on, after poor performances at the Hero World Challenge and Sony, the answer to those questions seemed to be up in the air. Zalatoris earned the benefit of the doubt with his terrific play at majors over the last several years, though, and a fair timeline seemed to be giving him until this year's Masters to sort everything out. He needed about half that as he nearly stole Riviera from Cantlay and Xander Schauffele before Matsuyama stole it from him.  Verdict: Winner(s)

5 biggest takeaways from the PGA Tour’s 2021-22 schedule shake-up

The PGA Tour released its schedule for the 2022 season Tuesday, a massive, 48-event announcement that broadens its international scope.

Any plans for 2022 yet? No? Well then, let us be the first to change that.

The PGA Tour announced its complete 2021-22 schedule Tuesday, debuting a beefy, 48-event roster that expands the Tour’s reach further than it has ever gone before.

While it’s no “Super Season” (thanks in large part to a season thankfully free of Covid-19 related cancellations), the slightly reduced calendar includes many of the biggest events fans have come to expect from the PGA Tour: the Players Championship, the Genesis, and of course, the FedEx Cup Playoffs , in addition to dozens of others.

Here are 5 key takeaways from what you can expect in the upcoming PGA Tour season.

1. Ties across the Atlantic

The BIG headline from the schedule announcement is the expansion of the “ strategic alliance ” between the PGA and European Tours. In 2022, the alliance will see the two tours co-sanction three events — the Barbasol, Barracuda and Scottish Open — opening the floodgates for dozens more of the game’s top-rated players to compete in European Tour events, and vice versa.

The PGA Tour assumed an ownership stake in the European Tour as part of the alliance, which was created with the goal of forming an international competitor to the rumored SGL and PGL, two upstart leagues that could look to poach talent from the newly aligned tours in the coming months.

2. Goodbye, Northern Trust…

Golf fans in the Northeast will be disappointed to see the new schedule brings with it the end of the few remaining events in the region: the Northern Trust.

The first FedEx Cup playoff event has gotten the ax in the 2021-22 PGA Tour schedule, leaving behind a reputation for touring the Northeast in the late summer. The Northern Trust struggled to land a home at the highest rung of elite courses in the area, but it was responsible for a handful of memorable moments, like Dustin Johnson’s record-setting 30-under performance in 2020.

3. …and Hello, FedEx St. Jude

Replacing the Northern Trust is this week’s PGA Tour stop: the WGC-FedEx St. Jude. In 2022, the tournament will take on a slightly streamlined name — the FedEx St. Jude (headline writers everywhere, rejoice!) — in addition to a new August date.

The FedEx St. Jude will take the place abandoned by the Northern Trust, becoming the first FedEx Cup playoff event. TPC Southwind, the event’s host of more than three decades, will continue on as the first playoff venue in the new year.

4. Trouble for the Asia Swing?

The Tour’s self-entitled “Asia Swing” appears in danger of being contested from the United States for the second consecutive year. After Covid restrictions forced the three-event circuit (WGC-HSBC Champions, CJ Cup and Zozo Championship) into the southwestern United States last fall, one of the events (the CJ Cup) has already been pushed back to its temporary home (The Summit Club in Las Vegas), and the Tour hasn’t closed the door on the other two.

The WGC-HSBC Champions and Zozo Championship, on the other hand, are the only events on the Tour calendar emblazoned with a “to be determined” asterisk.

5. Steph Curry enters the fold

The Memorial Tournament welcomes a new sponsor and a new figurehead in 2022 … sort of. Of course, Jack Nicklaus will still be in the fold when the action returns to Muirfield Village for the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday, in June. But joining him atop the altar will be NBA star Steph Curry and his wife, Ayesha, a New York Times bestselling author.

The Currys were in attendance at the 2021 iteration of the event, and figure to grow into a larger role at Nicklaus’ home event in the years to come. Curry, 33, has roots in the area: He was born in nearby Akron, Ohio.

Cognizant Classic predictions, best bets for this week's PGA Tour props and longshot odds

Welcome to Florida.

Make yourself at home, we’re going to be here awhile.

The PGA Tour comes back to the U.S. after a quick stop in Mexico and will criss-cross Florida over the next month as there are four tournaments on tap in the Sunshine State.

This week’s tournament, the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, will be played at PGA National Resort and Spa.

The star power is gradually getting stronger. This week, 19 of the world’s top 50 golfers in the world will be in the field, up from just four in last week’s stop in Mexico.

Add in the fact there’s a $9 million purse and 500 FedEx Cup points to the winner and more and more golfers are starting to get in the swing of things.

This tournament is also a great warm-up for next week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, another signature event with a $20 million purse.

Hang on, it’s about to get wild.

This is Cognizant’s first year as the title sponsor. Golf fans will recognize this event from previous years as the Honda Classic which was won in 2023 by Chris Kirk.

Rory McIlroy odds to win Cognizant Classic

While there are a good number of top-ranked players in the field, some of them -- like No. 2-ranked Rory McIlroy, the favorite on sports betting apps  this week at -- will likely look at this tournament as a warm-up for next week’s signature tournament.

We know McIlroy has the game and firepower to win this tournament, but he’s more of a big-picture kind of guy, and we’re thinking he will look at this event as a way to get his game in shape.

He’s had just two starts in 2024 and his best finish is a T-24 at the Genesis.

Normally he wouldn’t tee it up here, but we’re guessing those two middle-of-the-road finishes might be telling him his game needs a little work before the high-profile events.

Defending Honda Classic champ Kirk longshot at Cognizant

Chris Kirk is the defending champ, and we love backing defending champs…just not this week.

He comes in at odds, so the pricing is great.

But, we’re going to shy away from backing him because of his recent performance.

Sure, he won the season-opening Sentry event on Maui to kick-start his season.

But since then, he’s got no top-10 finishes in his past four events, and he’s coming in to this week off a missed cut at the Genesis Invitational.

He might prove us wrong and go back-to-back, but we’re betting his game still needs some fine-tuning before he gets back into the winner’s circle.

Cognizant Classic prediction: Could Eric Cole continue PGA pattern of longshot winners?

So, we’ve ruled out two top players this week.

Where are we going with this?

Well, if you look at the first eight tournaments of 2024 there’s a pattern.

We’re missing big names in the winner’s circle.

Or should we say any big-name winners.

There’s been no McIlroy, there’s been no Scottie Scheffler, there’s been no Xander Schauffele.

We could go on and on.

So we’re going to see if that pattern continues this week as we look at Eric Cole at .

This is the tournament that brought Cole, one of the poster guys for the term journeyman golfer, into the PGA Tour spotlight in 2023.

We say journeyman for the simple fact that Cole is 35 years old and has been trying to find his spot on the PGA Tour.

Mission accomplished in 2023 … eventually.

He spent the first 11 events of his rookie season trying to find his way.

The first four tournaments were missed cuts. Then came a little spark of success as he made five straight cuts. That was the good news. The bad news is his best finish in that stretch was a T-27.

Then came another missed cut and set up the week that proved to be the turning point in this young man’s career.

It was time for him to either step up and prove he belonged or just tread water and hope lightning would strike.

He chose the former as his next event was his best…a T-15 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Then came the tournament where he proved he belonged.

He was solo second (losing in a playoff to champ Chris Kirk) last year in this event.

The rest, as they say, is history.

He wound up with five top-10 finishes (including his final three events of 2023) to wrap up Rookie of the Year honors.

He’s already played in seven events in 2024 but his best finish, a T-10, came in his last outing at the Genesis Invitational.

We’re thinking his playoff loss last year will bring back good memories in 2024, and he gets in the winner’s circle.

Semi-longshot bet to consider for Cognizant Classic

We’re going to check out an Irishman, Shane Lowry, this week as a semi-longshot pick at .

Lowry calls Jupiter, FL, home and this will be his seventh time teeing it up at PGA National.

Add in the fact he was T-2 here in 2022 and you’ve got to figure this guy knows his way around this golf course.

Lowry has had a so-so start to the 2024 season with two made cuts in his three starts.

His best finish is a T-25 at the Farmers Insurance Open.

But we figure with this being a home event for him (as well as other golfers this week), he’s going to be in the hunt come Sunday.

Cognizant Classic prop bets

We’re going to stick with a player to finish in the top-10: Brandon Wu at .

Wu was T-14 in last year’s tournament and is coming off a T-13 finish in last week’s Mexico Open when we had him to finish in the top-10.

We’re betting he’s getting closer and closer to that first PGA Tour win.

But this week we just need him to be in the top 10.

A win would be a bonus, especially for him.

We’re also going to bet there will be a playoff this week at +300.

There was a playoff last year and in the past 10 years there have been four playoffs.

The PGA Tour begins this week in Hawaii. The 56th annual RBC Heritage Tournament isn’t far away

The official PGA Tour season is teeing off this Thursday, Jan. 4 at The Sentry Plantation at Kapalua , Hawaii, marking the official countdown to the 2024 RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing. This is the 56th playing of tournament on Hilton Head Island.

The first playing of the tournament was over Thanksgiving Day weekend in 1969 when Arnold Palmer won by three strokes and took home a winner’s check for $20,000.

Last year’s tournament winner was Matt Fitzpatrick , a 29-year-old from Sheffield, England who became a pro golfer in 2014 with his debut at The Irish Open, joined the PGA tour in 2020, and has accumulated two wins while on his way to ten professional worldwide wins. His share of the purse in 2023 was $3.6 million. The winning purse for this year’s event is set for $20 million. The winner is also awarded a coveted ‘Heritage Plaid’ jacket .

The details

With just 104 days left and 15 weekends of tournaments to occur before RBC Heritage week, here’s what to know ahead of the signature event.

The 2024 RBC Heritage tournament is set to take place on April 15-21 at the Harbour Town Golf Links in Sea Pines on the south end of the island. It will be one of eight new PGA Tour Signature Events with limited field sizes and elevated purses. The 2024 RBC Heritage joins the three player-hosted Signature Events including The Genesis Invitational, the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Memorial Tournament.

Tickets for the annual event were released for sale in October.

Since then, Doc’s BBQ at 15, Lighthouse Club and the new Ultimate Patron Pass for Friday and Saturday are sold out as well as the Calibogue Club for Friday, Saturday and Sunday’s dates.

Tickets may be purchased for individual days or week-long packages.

Patrons may go online to purchase ticket packages and book accommodations .

The split in the men's game between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf League is unsustainable and will not benefit anyone in the long term, Rory McIlroy told Golf Monthly on Tuesday.

The four-time major champion said it was disheartening as a competitor to see the best golfers play in separate tours for most of the year.

"There needs to be a correction. I think what's happening is not sustainable right now, so something needs to happen to try to bring it all back together so we can all move forward so we don't have this division that's sort of ongoing," McIlroy said.

"They keep going down those different paths and I just don't see how that benefits anyone in the long run. ... I think [it's] a shame for the overall game of golf."

Although negotiations on a merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf are ongoing, McIlroy said it is still a distant prospect.

"We're probably still quite a long ways from it, but I would hope that in the future that we can get there, unify the game and get the best players back together again," he added.

Talks between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have dragged on, and the PGA Tour secured a $3 billion investment deal with a consortium of U.S. sports team owners called Strategic Sports Group (SSG) in January.

The PGA Tour is prepared to go it alone with SSG if a deal with LIV Golf cannot be done, tour commissioner Jay Monahan said last month.

"Ultimately [LIV Golf] do have some of the best players in the world that are playing some really good golf," McIlroy said.

McIlroy will next compete at the Texas Open, which starts Thursday.
