On the Mittelland Canal in Lower Saxony, Wolfsburg is a very young city, at no more than 80 years old. You could say that Wolfsburg owes its existence to one car, the VW Beetle, which first came off the production line in 1938. Over the next few decades a whole city was built for the Volkswagen plant’s workers, and architects of world standing like Alvar Aalto were hired for the job.

As you’d imagine, Volkswagen and cars in general are front and centre of Wolfsburg’s tourist appeal. The Autostadt is a heaven on earth for car fans, a futuristic park where brand new VWs are transported automatically from the factory and stacked by robots in two silos.

Let’s have a look at the best things to do in Wolfsburg :

1. Autostadt

“Automobile City” in English, Autostadt, next to Wolfsburg’s Volkswagen factory, is many things rolled into one cutting-edge attraction.

There’s a museum on the history of automobiles, which we’ll come to next, as well as a delivery centre where customers are presented with their newly-minted Volkswagen to drive home.

You can also test drive cars at the Autostadt, including the 4×4 Volkswagen Touareg on an off-road course.

This smooth building, clad with brushed metal, mimics the classic curves of a Porsche car and was built by Henn architects in 2012. A curved ramp carries you down to a showroom where the latest models like a Panamera, Boxter and 911 are on show, together with historic models that go back to the brand’s origins after the Second World War.

Beside the vehicles there’s a couch with tablet computers recounting Porsche’s story.

5. AutoMuseum Volkswagen

Separate from the Autostadt, the AutoMuseum Volkswagen is all about the brand and can be found on the south side of the Mittelland Canal opposite the Allerpark.

The setting is a former textile factory and the museum has 140 vehicles, from the first VW Beetle to futuristic concept cars.

The original Beetle is naturally the darling, and you can track 75 years of production, up to the final model that rolled off the production line in Mexico in 2003. Some other cool models to keep on your radar are an Iltis that competed in the Paris-Dakar rally in 1980, a rare Pininfarina-designed type 4 prototype from 1966, a Pirelli Golf I from 1983 and a graceful Karmann-Ghia Type 14 coupé from 1972.

6. Wolfsburg Castle

The city’s namesake monument, Wolfsburg Castle started life as a lowland fort at the turn of the 14th century.

As the nature of conflict and land ownership changed down the years, the owners, the knights of von Bartensleben turned the property into a luxurious Weser Renaissance palace in the 1500s.

The grounds that had previously been the outer defences, became sumptuous gardens enhanced by the old moat, and are now the serene public Schloßpark.

The buildings house some of Wolfsburg’s municipal and cultural institutions, and put on events and exhibitions all year round.

7. Phaeno Science Center

Right next to Wolfsburg’s Hauptbahnhof, Phaeno is an interactive science museum in a spellbinding building designed by Zaha Hadid.

At more than 350 hands-on stations kids and grown-ups can get to grips with scientific concepts.

The stations are all arranged according to six different themes: Life, Vision, Energy, Dynamics, Mind and Mathematics, and many were designed in collaboration with artists.

Everything is guided by the principle that fun and playfulness can help kids learn.

They’ll be able to control maglev trains, see a six-metre fire tornado, play with static electricity, interact with robots and that’s just the beginning.

8. Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg

The city’s main art museum was founded on the south side of Wolfsburg’s pedestrian zone in 1994. In a city only 80 years old it makes sense that the art should be contemporary and modern.

The collection has around 400 pieces for movements like Arte Povera, concept art and Minimalism.

This is normally brought out for thematic exhibitions, when you can expect to see works by big-hitters like Olafur Eliasson, Christian Boltanski, Bruce Nauman and Jeff Wall.

But it’s the visiting, short-term exhibitions that draw the most visitors and acclaim.

In the two decades since the museum opened there have been shows for artists as diverse as Giacometti, Man Ray and contemporary figures like the photographer Pieter Hugo and installation artist Jeppe Hein.

9. Allerpark

Germany’s largest public leisure area, the Allerpark is 130 hectares in size and has a wealth of attractions and facilities in its boundaries.

The park is little more than 15 years old, but in that short timeframe a host of projects have furnished it with major venues like the Volkswagen Arena, AOK Stadium (Home to VfL Wolfsburg’s women’s team), but also smaller attractions like a water sports centre, artificial beach, hockey rink, swimming complex, bowling alley, high ropes course and disc golf course.

Surrounding around arenas and attractions there’s lush greenery, centring on the massive Allersee lake.

10. VfL Wolfsburg

Many sports fans may know Wolfsburg because of the professional football team that was founded by VW factory workers when the city was just seven years old in 1945. Until 1992 VfL Wolfsburg were playing amateur football, and won their first promotion to the Bundesliga in 1997. In the last decade or so Die Wölfe (The Wolves) have been one of the most successful outfits in the league after Bayern Munich, and in 2009 they clinched their first and only title.

Like nearly all Bundesliga stadiums the 30,000-capacity Volkswagen Arena is a supreme place to watch football, with up-to-date facilities, cheap tickets (€15.00 for standing) and a boisterous but well-behaved crowd.

If you come outside the season or can’t get tickets there are 90-minute stadium tours from Tuesday to Friday (14:00) and on the weekends (11:00 and 13:00).

11. Planetarium

With the largest stargazing dome in Lower Saxony, Wolfsburg’s planetarium opened in 1983 and can present 9,000 stars at once.

Everything was brought up to date in 2010 when the planetarium was equipped with six state-of-the-art projectors manufactured by the optical instruments brand Carl Zeiss.

Before you go in for a show there’s an interactive lab in the foyer with touch screens allowing you to explore the solar system and individual planets.

And as for the shows, these can be about the moon, solar system, constellations, and the possibility of aliens, but also terrestrial topics like orchids and tropical reefs.

12. Burg Neuhaus

A ten-minute drive east of the city is another absorbing historic monument.

Burg Neuhaus is from 1371 and was home to the knights of the Rotherhof line.

There’s nothing random about the castle’s location, as it controlled trade routes between Lüneburg and Leipzig, and Bremen and Magdeburg.

Unlike Wolfsburg Castle Burg Neuhaus has kept its rough and ready Medieval character, and is held as one of North Germany’s best preserved moated castles.

The inner courtyard, defended by 20-metre-high stone walls is a venue for all manner of events, like an artisan market in autumn.

And inside there’s an informative museum about the building, with models, excavated artefacts and a genuine medieval suit of armour.

13. Schloss Fallersleben

The last of Wolfsburg’s trio of historic properties, Schloss Fallersleben is a Renaissance palace ordered in 1521 by Francis, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, who died before the building was completed.

Much later, at the end of the 18th century the palace would be the birthplace of the poet August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben.

He is most famous for scribing Das Lied Der Deutschen, the third stanza of which is the German national anthem.

There are insights about Fallersleben’s education and childhood, as well as his political and intellectual contributions to German life in the 1800s.

The palace’s carved timbers and stuccowork are also in great condition, and you can look down into the historic cellars, which were excavated and then covered with glass in the 2000s.

14. Heilig-Geist-Kirche und Gemeindezentrum

As Wolfsburg expanded in the 1950s and 60s, one of the most acclaimed architects of the period was commissioned shape the city.

Alvar Aalto contributed the Stephanuskirche and the Aalvar-Aalto-Kulturhaus, both of which are listed monuments.

But his masterpiece in Wolfsburg is the Church of the Holy Spirit, seen as one of the outstanding pieces of the International Style.

The church, pastorate, children’s day-care centre and community hall are all rolled into one seamless complex in a garden environment.

The bell-tower is totally open and stands at 32-metres,holding four bells, while the sparsely decorated inside has a sinuous wood-panelled ceiling.

The antependiums in the main hall were woven by Elissa Aalto, and the community hall has lithographs by Marc Chagall.

15. Tierpark Essehof

Southwest of Wolfsburg about halfway to Braunschweig is a mid-sized zoo with about 50 different animal species.

The zoo first opened in 1968, and in the last couple of decades has been given a total overhaul.

Now in large, natural-looking habitats there are 260 animals like gibbons, meerkats, raccoons, kangaroos, zebras, watusi cattle, ostriches and emus.

One of the newer additions is an underwater station, with a glass panel that lets you observe freshwater species three metres below the surface of a pond.

The park also has European domestic species like Toggenburg goats and racka sheep with strange twisting horns.

The “Automobile City” as it is known in English, Autostadt that is next to Wolfsburg’s Volkswagen factory, is many things rolled into one cutting-edge attraction of modernism.

A curved ramp carries you down to a showroom where the latest models like a Panamera, Boxter and 911 are on show, together with historic models that go back to the brand’s origins after the Second World War.

Besides the vehicles, there’s a couch with tablet computers recounting Porsche’s story.

5. Auto Museum Volkswagen

Found separately from the Autostadt, the AutoMuseum Volkswagen is a testimony to the brand of Volkswagen and can be found on the south side of the Mittelland Canal opposite the Allerpark.

The original Beetle car is obviously the darling, and you can track up to 75 years of its production, up to the final model that rolled off the production line in Mexico in 2003. Some other cool models to check when you are visiting are an Iltis that competed in the Paris-Dakar rally in 1980, a rare Pininfarina-designed type 4 prototype from 1966, a Pirelli Golf I from 1983 and a graceful Karmann-Ghia Type 14 coupé from 1972.

6. Wolfsburg Castle

The Wolfsburg Castle started it’s life as a lowland fort at the turn of the 14th century.

As the nature of conflict and land ownership changed down the years, the owners, the knights of von Bartensleben turned the property into a luxurious Weser Renaissance palace in the 1500s.

The grounds that had previously been the outer defences, became sumptuous gardens enhanced by the old moat, and are now the serene public Schloßpark.

The buildings house some of Wolfsburg’s municipal and cultural institutions and put on events and exhibitions all year round.

You can visit the small museum to get to know the long history of the castle and the short history of Wolfsburg as a city.

7. Phaeno Science Center

Very near to the Wolfsburg’s Hauptbahnhof, Phaeno is an interactive science museum in a marvellous building designed by Zaha Hadid.

It houses more than 350 hands-on stations that kids and grown-ups can witness to get in grips with scientific concepts.

The stations are designed according to six different themes which are: Life, Vision, Energy, Dynamics, Mind and Mathematics.

Every station is built by the principle that fun and playfulness can help kids to learn.

They’ll be able to operate maglev trains, see a six-metre fire tornado, play and experience with static electricity, interact with robots and much more.

8. Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg

The city’s major art museum was founded on the south side of Wolfsburg’s pedestrian zone in 1994. All of the art is contemporary and modern.

The collection has around 400 different pieces for movements like Arte Povera, concept art and Minimalism.

This is normally displayed for thematic exhibitions when you can expect to see works by stalwarts such as Olafur Eliasson, Christian Boltanski, Bruce Nauman and Jeff Wall.

10. VfL Wolfsburg

Most of the sports fans and sports enthusiasts may know Wolfsburg because of their professional football team that was founded by Volkswagen factory workers when the city was just seven years old in 1945. Until 1992 VfL Wolfsburg were playing amateur football and won their first promotion to the Bundesliga in 1997.

Like nearly all Bundesliga stadiums the 30,000-capacity Volkswagen Arena is a supreme place to watch football, with up-to-date facilities, cheap tickets (€15.00 for standing) and a boisterous but well-behaved crowd.

If you come outside the season or can’t get tickets there are 90-minute stadium tours from Tuesday to Friday (14:00) and on the weekends (11:00 and 13:00).

North Germany’s underrated gem

On around 204 square kilometres, Wolfsburg presents itself as a young, modern city. Unlike any other city of its size, Wolfsburg offers numerous great leisure activities for city travellers who want to spend a couple of days here.

Nestled between the Harz Mountains in the south and the Lüneburg Heath in the north-west, Wolfsburg has a great deal to offer. Whether you want to spend a relaxing day in nature, visit historic alleys, go on a shopping spree, see state-of-the-art museums or indulge in great culinary treats, Lower Saxony’s fifth-largest city has it all – and most attractions can be reached by foot from the city centre’s main station. Known internationally for its Volkswagen factory that became the world’s largest industrial enterprise and automotive plant under one roof, Wolfsburg’s visitors can also look forward to an exciting insight into the world of automobile production.

Of course, with the rise of the Volkswagen production plant, Wolfsburg’s population also grew. While 22,000 people called Wolfsburg their home in 1948, 50,000 people were counted in 1958 and over 85,000 inhabitants lived here in 1963. Today, around 125,400 people live in Wolfsburg. With the increase of inhabitants, the number of tourists has also steadily grown. Thus, we find out what the city, that only got the name ‘Wolfsburg’ in 1945, has to offer. At just over 70 years old, it impresses with numerous attractions that are unique in Germany.

Cars and currywurst

First of all, when we talk about Wolfsburg, we have to talk about Europe’s largest automotive group, Volkswagen. Here, in one of the world’s largest plants, more than 70,000 people are employed. Furthermore, with around 10,000 employees, the company’s research and development department is Europe’s largest extramural innovation centre. No wonder that more than two million guests flock annually to Wolfsburg’s Autostadt to experience the multifaceted world of mobility first-hand. Here, you can find a theme park for car lovers that was designed by Gunter Henn. It impresses with an enchanting collection of famous cars, modern architecture and many great experiences.

One great experience for the entire family is a visit to Volkswagen’s production facilities during the week. Or why not head to the architecturally impressive, 28-hectare-large park and laguna landscape where Volkswagen’s brands architecturally and artistically stage their respective brand philosophy in several pavilions? Furthermore, with the automobile museum ‘ZeitHaus’, many seasonal shows, interesting theme-based exhibitions and numerous adventure attractions, the Autostadt offers many highlights throughout the year. For example, from 12 July to 20 August 2017, the CIRQUE NOUVEAU, the Autostadt’s summer festival, will attract many car enthusiasts. After an eventful day at this exciting theme park, one should not miss one of Volkswagen’s most popular originals: the currywurst. Together with the company’s own curry ketchup, it is a favourite meal in the plant and the city centre alike. In 2015, Volkswagen produced 7.2 million sausages in its in-house abattoir – thus selling even more sausages than cars.

Enchanting history meets innovation

Futuristic high-tech architecture and light-flooded building structures or old churches and historic buildings: you can find all of this in Wolfsburg. While the modern city centre offers an abundance of great shopping opportunities and impressive, contemporary architecture, history enthusiasts will also find their fair share of treats as small towns that are over 1,000 years old are as part of Wolfsburg as modern, architectural masterpieces. The moated castle in Neuhaus, the artisan street in Vorsfelde or Fallersleben’s old town will take visitors back to long-gone periods. Fallersleben, for example, is the birth place of Hoffmann von Fallersleben, the writer of the German national anthem. The town itself impresses with a beautiful old town with numerous half-timbered houses and a castle from the 16th century in which a museum can be found. After an interesting day trip, one can relax in the ‘Altes Brauhaus’ (old brewery) where beer is still brewed to this day.

Another great way to spend a day in Wolfsburg is to explore the many interesting museums. Art enthusiasts should definitely not miss Wolfsburg’s art museum. The large exhibition hall gets an architectural overhaul from project to project and serves as the perfect shell for showcasing international contemporary art, thematic exhibitions or elaborate artist projects. Visitors can expect four changing exhibitions per year that also integrate works of the museum’s own extensive collection. Until 3 September 2017, Hans op de Beeck’s Out of the Ordinary exhibition can be admired here. In the phaeno, on the other hand, children and adults can learn about the world of natural sciences. At over 350 experimentation stations, in visitor laboratories, the idea forum or the science theatre, one can vividly experience astounding facts from the world of science and technology. A current exhibition, called Manometer! Die unglaubliche Ausstellung über deinen Körper will run until 11 February 2018 and explores the human body. The phaeno was designed by the Pritzker award-winning architect Zaha Hadid and, according to experts, counts toward the world’s 12 most important, modern buildings.

Buildings that are just as impressive: the ‘Kulturhaus’, the Stephanus Church’s community centre and the Heilig-Geist Church. They were all designed by the world-famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and they describe Aalto’s most important projects outside of his home country of Finland. Another architectural sight that should not be missed is famous architect Hans Scharoun’s theatre – the only theatre that this important representative of modern architecture ever built.

Delicacies and designer fashion

Of course, visitors can also look forward to an abundance of great restaurants, cute cafés, relaxing bars or convivial beer gardens in Wolfsburg. Those that want to try a first-class menu should head to Aqua restaurant where Sven Elverfeld (three Michelin stars) cooks on the highest level. After strengthening oneself with great food and tasty drinks, one should visit the designer outlets Wolfsburg – Germany’s first inner-city outlet centre. Here, visitors can find over 70 international brands at significantly reduced prices. On 4 August, visitors can look forward to late-night shopping until 10pm and on 15 and 18 August, live music will enlighten one’s shopping trip from 7pm onwards. If this shopping experience is not yet enough, one can conveniently walk towards the Porsche Street in the heart of Wolfsburg from here, where boutiques, numerous shops and the ‘City-Galerie’ mall with over 100 shops can be found.

Sport enthusiasts, on the other hand, should visit the Volkswagen Arena – VfL Wolfsburg’s home ground. The team has been in the Bundesliga for 20 years and its women’s team is also very successful. With the Grizzlys, who are at home at the Eis Arena, Wolfsburg also has an ice hockey team in Germany’s highest ice hockey division (DEL). Another fun-packed activity for the entire family can be found in the heart of Wolfsburg: the high rope course ‘monkeyman’. Here, one can push one’s boundaries on an obstacle course that comprises numerous exciting stations that must be overcome in heights between four and 13 metres.

Let’s talk business

With Volkswagen’s headquarters based in Wolfsburg, it seems no wonder that the city counts towards Germany’s five most promising business locations according to the Handelsblatt and Prognos AG’s Zukunftsatlas 2016. But the city will not rest on its laurels. Together with Volkswagen, the city of Wolfsburg seeks to develop into a model city for digitalisation to further foster the attractiveness of Wolfsburg as a business and living standard location. The city also offers excellent conditions for companies that seek to hold or attend a conference or congress. Around 5,000 hotel beds (primarily in the four-star category) and exciting locations offer the perfect setting for events in Wolfsburg. The great transport links and the convenient location are great conditions for events with participants from all over Germany. A train from Berlin to Wolfsburg only takes 60 minutes and the nearest international airport is Hannover (HAJ), only 90 kilometres away. From here, a shuttle brings visitors to Wolfsburg in 60 minutes. Of course, the various leisure activities offer unusual possibilities for the framework programme.

Tourist’s guide to Wolfsburg, Germany – the heart of Volkswagen

Wolfsburg, a city in Germany, has a fascinating history and an abundance of unusual sights. And he has several interesting features that do not cease to amaze tourists coming here.

General information

Wolfsburg, founded in 1938, is a district city of Germany and a major administrative center of Lower Saxony. In tourists, its name immediately causes 2 associations. One of them is associated with the football club of the same name, the second – with the Volkswagen brand. But if the locals can still remain indifferent to football, then they owe the world-famous automotive corporation jobs and a high standard of living.

Few people know, but initially Wolfsburg was an ordinary workers’ village, created for the employees of the machine plant. The only thing that distinguished him from other exactly the same settlements was the Volkswagen Beetle automobile model, the production of which was under the control of the Führer himself. Having gained popularity among the representatives of the ruling elite of the Third Reich, this brand turned Wolfsburg into the largest center for the production of machines and one of the largest cities in Germany. According to 2016, its population is 124 thousand people.

In Wolfsburg there are neither old cobbled streets, nor medieval churches, nor any other elements inherent in Old Europe. But it boasts modern museums, urban landscapes, huge amusement parks and other modern attractions. And here is the headquarters of Volkswagen, which played a key role in the fate of this city.

Wolfsburg Attractions

Wolfsburg sights include many cultural, spiritual and historical sites. Today we will talk only about those that cause increased interest among modern tourists.

The city, built in 2000 by the famous Volkswagen company, is located in close proximity to the headquarters of its founder. On the territory of this automobile Disneyland, occupying more than 20 hectares of land, there are many different objects – a retail outlet, a theme park, an entertainment center, a hotel, a museum, cinemas, etc.

Among them, the Tower of Time deserves special attention, a modern 5-story building, which houses an exposition of historical cars not only from the famous German manufacturer, but also from other European brands. Here you can see the Beetle convertible, released in 1939, take a couple of pictures in the expensive Bugatti, and even sit in a car of the 50s. Inspection of the tower is usually started from the upper floors, gradually advancing to the gift shop, built at the entrance.

Among the important sights of Autostadt in Germany are thematic pavilions decorated in one style or another: Bentley – aristocratic, Skoda – sophisticated, modest, Lamborghini – in the form of a cube. There are also children’s areas in the City where you can play computer games, drive cars, consider engines made of glass and just have fun.

While the children are busy with their own affairs, adults are offered to listen to the story of the creation of the legendary Beetle, overcome an obstacle course or go on a boat tour on the river. Adler If you are lucky, you can watch how the purchased cars are lowered on the lift from the sites of the twin towers located at a height of 60 m.

AutoMuseum Volkswagen, opened in the mid-80s. of the last century, housed in the premises of a former garment factory on Dieselstraße street, 35. Its exposition is a revived history of the creation and development of a well-known automobile concern. The exhibition area of ​​the museum, numbering several thousand square meters, contains more than a hundred unique exhibits. Among them there are both modern models and rare items that can make a lasting impression not only on ardent car lovers, but also on ordinary visitors.

What is the legendary “Beetle”, the founder of all subsequent cars of the brand, or “See Golf”, which has a built-in mechanism to combat water obstacles ?! This list is continued by the original “Herbie”, which appeared in the movie “Crazy Race”, a sawn minibus, which traveled across Germany in the middle of the 20th century, and exhibits of limited editions adorning the collections of world stars and famous politicians.

• Ticket price: 6 € – for adults, 3 € – for children.

The Faeno Science and Entertainment Center, one of Wolfsburg’s most visited attractions in Germany, was opened in November 2005. The building, designed by the famous British architect Zaha Hadid, has collected up to 300 experimental units.

Acquaintance with them takes place in the form of a game, during which complex technological principles and scientific phenomena are explained to visitors in a simple language.

Moreover, in this center one can independently conduct various experiments, which make it possible to verify the effect of the well-known laws of physics. For example, with the help of the “Run straight into the wall” stand, you will be able to measure the power of the blow caused to the body by a certain obstacle. At the next exposition, you will find tricks with magnetic fields – before your eyes, steel filings will first turn into “hedgehogs”, and then start to dance. Or maybe you want to try the power of thought? You can also do this at Phaeno Science Center! We cannot but mention the simulator of the hurricane “Fiery Tornado”. Despite the fact that the spectacle lasts only 3 minutes, the impressions of it remain quite realistic.

As you can see, everything has been done in this scientific theater so that acquaintance with the sciences turns into a real entertainment that will be interesting to both adults and children.

• Children (6-17 years old) – 9 €;
• Children under 6 years old have the right to visit the attraction for free.

Allerpark is a public leisure park located between several areas of Wolfsburg (Reislingen, Stadtmitt, Nordstadt and Worsfelde). The main attraction of this place is Lake Allersee, for the creation of which the channel of the River Aller was redirected.

In the park, whose territory covers more than 130 hectares, there are several entertainment venues. The most popular of them are the Eis Arena Wolfsburg ice rink, the BadeLand Wolfsburg water park, the AOK stadium, the skatepark, roller skating tracks, runner tracks, game areas and beach volleyball courts.

In addition to cultural and recreational activities, Allepark performs another important mission. In the 1990s he turned the unremarkable Wolfsburg into a popular tourist destination. Since then, this park has been called the main symbol of the city. In 2004, Allerpark went through a renovation to coincide with the German Federal Garden Exhibition. Then, SoccaFive Arena indoor football hall, WakePark water ski center, Monkeyman cable car and several restaurants appeared on its territory. Currently, the park often hosts fairs, festivals, competitions and other public events.

Where to stay in Wolfsburg?

The city of Wolfsburg in Germany is famous not only for interesting sights, but also for a large selection of accommodation for every taste and budget. It has everything from budget hostels and guest houses to premium apartments and hotels. Regarding prices:

• double room in a 3 * hotel will cost 100-170 € per day
• and in the hotel 4-5 * – from 140 €.

How to get there

In the immediate vicinity of Wolfsburg there are 3 airports at once: Braunschweig (26 km), Magdeburg (65 km) and Hanover (74 km). Most of the Russian flights are accepted last – let’s talk about it.

Different types of transport go from Hanover to Wolfsburg, but the train can be called the most convenient. The trains go with a small interval from 04:48 to 00:48. All trains, with the exception of those departing at 20:55 and 04:55, are direct. The same make a transplant in Braunschweig. Travel time is from 30 minutes to one and a half hours and depends on the type of train (regular train or high-speed train). Tickets cost from 17 to 26 €.

On a note! Trains to Wolfsburg leave from Hanover Main Station. From the airport there are buses and trains. The journey takes 20 minutes, the ticket costs about 4 €.

Interesting Facts

There are many interesting facts connected with the city of Wolfsburg in Germany. Here are just a few of them:

• From the day of its foundation until 1945, this settlement did not even have its own name. At that time, its population of the town was made up of workers at the Volkswagen plant, who called it “just” – Stadt des KdF-Wagen-by-Fullersleben;
• Wolfsburg is one of the youngest cities in Germany, in the basis of which Hitler himself took part;
• In the state of Lower Saxony, it takes 6th place in terms of population;

• An important difference between the parks, reserves and squares of Wolfsburg is the huge population of rabbits – they can be seen here at every step. Animals are so used to people that they have long ceased to be afraid of passers-by walking along the alleys. But stray dogs here, surprisingly, are not here;
• Those who are going to walk a lot should take into account that there are no signs on most streets;
• The main feature of local residents is straightforwardness – they completely do not understand the hints, therefore, in a conversation with them it is better to do without ambiguity;
• Surprises here are not held in high esteem – the indigenous population of Wolfsburg is used to strictly following the set plan, and surprises, even the most pleasant ones, unsettle them for a long time;
• Launching the fifth-generation Volkswagen Golf production, the concern’s executives jokingly renamed the city Golfsburg. Of course, for a long time this name did not exist, but the attention of potential buyers attracted;
• Wolfsburg Castle, clambered into the ranks of modern buildings, went to the city for nothing. They say its owners could not stand the neighborhood with the noisy streets of the metropolis and simply fled from the family nest. Now there is a museum;

• In Rothenfeld, which was once a detached village, and now is one of the districts of the city, you can find a huge stone with an inscription on the war with Napoleon.
