Yo-Yo Ma (born October 7th, 1955) is a French-American cellist. He was born in Paris to Chinese parents, and grew up in New York City.

Ma was a child prodigy, and began performing with his instrument at the age of five. He’s now arguably the most famous cello player on the planet. He first appeared on American television at the age of eight, and went onto graduate from both the prestigious Juilliard School - one of the world’s most prestigious music schools - and, later, Harvard University. over the course of a sparkling career, he’s recorded no fewer than seventy-five albums, and has garnered fifteen Grammy Awards in that time, too.

Ma has been involved with several high-profile film soundtracks, too, including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Seven Years in Tibet and Once Upon a Time in America. He performed ‘Air and Simple Gifts’, a John Williams composition, at the inauguration ceremony of President Barack Obama in January 2009, cementing his status of something of a national institution in America, in musical terms. He was a friend of the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs, and would often perform at press events for the tech company at Jobs’ request. He continues to have a huge influence on American culture, and won the inaugural Fred Rogers Legacy Award in 2014, which he called “perhaps the greatest honor I’ve ever received.”

Live reviews

Yo-Yo Ma is one of a kind. There is no one who can quite reach the standard of musical ability and technique that Yo-Yo Ma has achieved. To hear his bow strum across the strings of his cello and create that deep resonance that sinks right into out hearts is phenomenal to see in a live setting.

When Yo-Yo Ma walks on the stage everyone is silent and eyes are fixated on him and ears are attentively engrossed in the music. Yo-Yo Ma seems to sell out his shows every time he comes through town and there is a good reason that he does. He is one of the best cello players in the world and his musical repertoire is vast and diverse. Yo-Yo Ma is a master at playing the great classical pieces and Bach’s beloved Baroque pieces, but he also is well versed at playing jazz, blue grass, and Chinese traditional music.

With Yo-Yo Ma being one of the best cello players in the world it makes sense that he would be playing one of the best cellos. He plays a 2.5 million dollar cello that was built in 1733 by the well regarded, Domenico Montagnana. With this cello Yo-Yo Ma is able to get a deep, warm tone that sounds incredible live. When attending a Yo-Yo Ma concert you can be sure you are going to get a diverse setlist. Yo-Yo Ma has an incredibly large catalog of music to play from having already released 75 albums.

Yo-Yo Ma is guaranteed to be an absolute treat to see live. If his 15 Grammy awards isn’t reason enough to convince you to go see him, then I don’t know what is. Yo-Yo Ma is already regarded as a legendary performer and if you get a chance to see him live you should definitely jump on the opportunity.

I had to spend my Friday night watching one of the world’d best cello players recite poetry! This event was incredibly misleading as it was not well advertised as a “conversation” rather than a musical concert. There was no cello insight. Yes I should have read the fine print, but why the hell is there a post on Songkick for a conversation?

36 concerts. 6 continents. 36 days of action.

Exploring how culture connects us..

In August 2018, Yo-Yo Ma began a two-year journey to perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s six suites for solo cello in 36 locations around the world, music that is among the first Yo-Yo ever learned when he began playing the cello at age four. The project is motivated not only by his six-decade relationship with the music, but also by Bach’s ability to speak to our shared humanity at a time when our civic conversation is so often focused on division.

For Yo-Yo, Bach’s 300-hundred-year-old music is one extraordinary example of how culture connects us and can help us to imagine and build a better future, but he believes there are many, many more. And for Yo-Yo, culture includes not just the arts, but everything that helps us to understand our environment, each other, and ourselves, from music and literature to science and food. The Bach Project explores and celebrates all the ways that culture makes us stronger as individuals, as communities, as a society, and as a planet.

Days of Action

Local and global. culture, conversation, and collaboration..

Alongside each concert, Yo-Yo and his team partner with artists and culture makers, cultural and community organizations, and leaders from across sectors to design conversations, collaborations, and performances. These public events and creative experiences are different in every location; they aspire to local relevance and global significance; they demonstrate culture’s power to create positive change; they inspire new relationships, connect partners across locations, and ask us all to keep culture at the center of our efforts to build a shared future.

“The shared understanding that culture generates in these divisive times can bind us together as one world, and guide us to political and economic decisions that benefit the entire species. We are all cultural beings — let’s explore how culture connects us and can help to shape a better future.” – YO-YO MA

“…the suites carry a larger message about how people connect, not just to art but also to one another. And enabling that communion has become Ma’s mission at this point in his career. He’s learned the importance of bringing people together, and not always in easy ways.” – Ray Mark Rinaldi, The Denver Post
“Soft sounds around me suggested that others were caught up in similarly strong emotions. How Ma has this effect on people is a mystery: I suspect it has to do with the warmth he brings to music that is fundamentally beyond comprehension. He makes the godlike human.” – Alex Ross, The New Yorker

Ticket lottery now open for Louisville Orchestra's show with Yo-Yo Ma at Mammoth Cave

yoyo tour

Award-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma will join the Louisville Orchestra this spring for several high-profile performances, including two sure to draw plenty of attention — a pair of shows at Kentucky's Mammoth Cave National Park .

The two performances inside the largest known cave system in the world are set for April 29 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., according to an announcement Wednesday from the Louisville Orchestra, and will take place at Rafinesque Hall, a large open room inside the cave.

Tickets for the performances, part of the planned "In Harmony – The Commonwealth Tour of the Louisville Orchestra" showcase, are likely to be in high demand. And producers behind the show have a plan in place to distribute them.

An online lottery will take place that will determine who's in the crowd this spring for the two shows. The lottery will be held at recreation.gov ― registration opened at 10 a.m. on Jan. 30 and will end at 10 a.m. on Feb. 6. Only one application per email address will be accepted, according to the website, and each application can request up to four tickets. A $1 application fee apply to all entries, but there are no additional fees.

Still, if you miss out on the Mammoth Cave performances, you may not be completely out of luck. Another opportunity will be available to catch the collaboration as Yo-Yo Ma, who plans to stay in the city for a five-day residency in April ahead of the shows at the park, will also perform alongside the Louisville Orchestra on April 27 at the Kentucky Center's Whitney Hall. Single tickets to that event will go on sale for that event between $60 and $200 in March — ticket packages are currently available beginning at $1,000 that include premium seating, a pre-show reception, dinner and parking.

Those three performances are the only chances to see Yo-Yo Ma, but for the rest of the group, the show goes on.

The Louisville Orchestra will also hit the road for a statewide tour later this year — performances with Kentucky violinist Tessa Lark are scheduled in Prestonsburg, Pikeville, and Harlan from May 17-19, and in July the group will travel to Glasgow, Covington, Bowling Green, Ashland, and Bardstown for a series of shows featuring classic songs from the Bluegrass State and around the country. In September, Chris Thile, a mandolin player with ties to Murray, will join the orchestra for shows in Henderson, Owensboro, and Madisonville.

Additional performances from the Louisville Orchestra are scheduled around the state in early 2024.

Yo-Yo Ma An Evening with Yo-Yo Ma

Skip slideshow, jump to main content.

more information

The incomparable Yo-Yo Ma returns to Austin for the first time in over a decade for a transcendent evening of music and words. In this one night-only performance, the world-renowned cellist performs a special selection of his favorite pieces and shares stories about a life dedicated to music.

Yo-Yo Ma’s career is testament to his faith in culture’s ability to generate trust and understanding — from the global collective Silkroad to the Bach Project and, most recently, Our Common Nature, a cultural journey to celebrate the ways that nature can reunite us in pursuit of a shared future. Yo-Yo was born to Chinese parents in Paris, where he began to study the cello with his father when he was four. Three years later, he moved with his family to the United States, where he continued his cello studies before pursuing a liberal arts education.

You can see Yo-Yo Ma, Louisville Orchestra live in Mammoth Cave for $1: How to get tickets

Yo-Yo Ma has performed in a lot of iconic venues, including numerous national parks , but this is one for the ages.

This spring, the  world-renowned cellist will join the Louisville Orchestra and Louisville Chamber Choir for two free  concerts inside Mammoth Cave , the largest cave system in the world.

"Music has been an important part of Mammoth Cave’s over 200-year modern history with classical musicians, choirs, and contemporary artists composing and often performing their music inside the cave," the National Park Service said in a press release , noting that Louisville Orchestra music director Teddy Abrams composed this event's music specifically for the cave and with Ma in mind.

"Abrams spent the last year exploring Mammoth Cave National Park and immersing himself into the cave’s geology and human history to gain inspiration from the sights and sounds of the park."

The free concerts aren't until April, but the lottery window for tickets opens Jan. 30.

When are the concerts?

There will only be two concerts inside Mammoth Cave.

They'll be held on April 29 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The performances will take place in Rafinesque Hall, a large open area inside Mammoth Cave, which also hosts the park's annual Cave Sing  in December. The park service says audience members will be encouraged to move around the space during the interactive performance.

How to get tickets

An online lottery will be held at  recreation.gov  for tickets to either show.

Registration will open at 10 a.m. ET on Jan. 30 and will end at 10 a.m. on Feb. 6. Only one application per email address will be accepted, and each application can request up to four tickets, according to the website.

A $1 application fee will apply to all entries, but the actual concert tickets are free. Admission to Mammoth Cave National Park is also free.

Easing access: Mammoth Cave replacing narrow stairways, among other improvements underground

What if you don't win?

If you strike out in the lottery, you can still catch Yo-Yo Ma with the Louisville Orchestra outside the national park, but it'll cost more. They'll perform Shostakovich together for an April 27th benefit concert and gala  at the Kentucky Center. Single tickets in the $60 to $200 range will go on sale in March. Gala packages including premium concert seating, a cocktail reception, dinner and parking start at $1,000.

Those three performances are the only chances to see Yo-Yo Ma with the orchestra, but the Louisville Orchestra will be offering more free performances throughout the year. The orchestra is kicking off a Kentucky-wide tour in May aimed at bringing live classical music to audiences who may not always have the chance to experience it.

On Wednesday (April 3), the R&B singer revealed plans for the Human Love Rebellion residency. Set to kick off in August 2024, the chart-topping performer will take the stage, making his debut at Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas.

“I’LL SEE Y’ALL IN VEGAS!!!,” exclaimed the 44-year-old on X when sharing the news. He added the slot machine and dice emoji to the promotional video.

Ahead of the Las Vegas dates, fans can catch Ne-Yo in multiple cities throughout the year. The “So Sick” singer is set to perform at the 2024 Lovers and Friends music festival in Vegas this May. Ne-Yo is also booked for the 2024 Cincinnati Music Festival , alongside New Edition, Kem, SWV, Maxwell, and Fantasia this summer.

Additionally, the acclaimed songwriter will embark on the Champagne and Roses Tour across Europe this June.

If staying on the road was not keeping the singer busy enough, his acting gig on BMF is sure to fill up time on his schedule. Speaking with VIBE , Ne-Yo detailed his experience in his new role as Rodney "Greeny" Green on the  50 Cent-produced show .

“I'm not a fan of the lace front, you know what I'm saying?" he said when asked about his character's appearance. "I wanted people to see somebody other than Ne-Yo, so we made it work. I was down with it, but once they put it on, I'm like, ‘Yeah, this is not something that I would ever really get into.’"

GloRilla and JT Trade Shots Following Rumors of Beef: 'Mentioned Yo Name to Clear the Air'

Glo and the City Girls member went back and forth with each other on Twitter following the release of the Memphis rapper's song "Aite," in which she name-drops JT.

GloRilla  and  JT  had themselves a tense back-and-forth situation on social media.

On Friday, the two rappers got on the platform formally known as Twitter to get some things off their chest after Glo mentioned her relationship with JT on  her latest mixtape titled   Ehhthang Ehhthang .  On the song “Aite,” Glo claimed there’s no bad blood with JT after fans thought they were beefing following an alleged slapping altercation at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards.

“I just pray one day the bad bitches would come together/’Cause Cardi and Nicki on a track would break some fuckin’ records/ Me and JT ain’t the best of friends but we ain’t beefin’/ Know bitches always havin’ ana that they keep a secret,” Glo rapped.

JT caught wind of the song and hopped on Twitter to call her out over what she believed was fake unity amongst female rappers.

“I been said she didn’t! She the one went radio silent! Played into, released a song about slapping rap b***hes now it’s female unity?? CORNY!!!!!” JT tweeted.

Female rappers JT and Remy Ma pose together; JT reacts to rumors, denying an altercation with Remy Ma

The City Girls rapper then responded to a fan asking how the rumor about them fighting came about which she said was a result of GloRilla not immediately shutting down the story.

“I guess she was waiting on her tape to address & who gone clear up going  viral  for slapping someone when the whole hood believed it! It was on brand!,” she wrote

Tweet exchange discussing a rumor about someone slapping another, noting the incident went viral and stayed on brand

After catching wind of JT's tweets, GloRilla hopped on X to defend herself. "Hoe shut yo dumb ass up & fix dem uglass wigs I said it ain’t no beef ho you da one with da secret animosity," she wrote Glo later shared a tweet of her own that read, “Nvm no free promo,” which then caused both rappers to diss each other in a series of tweets.

"Don't make me pop up at one of them Backyard BBQ shows you doing," Glo warned. "You feeling a way about SLAPPING RAP BITCHES AND MAKING BAIL HO. Guess that last run in had you thinking you da only bitch I touched?" Not long after, The City Girls rapper sent out a message saying "Pending," along with eight of her mugshots from over the years and a blank spot circled in red, implying an upcoming one.

“I mentioned yo name to clear the air! What you wanted me to say I didn’t slap you but I hit you with a purse instead??? Scary ass ho,” Glo said in one of her tweets before JT said, “OMG you are a liarrrr! Bitch you didn’t hit me with shit FANNED out ass bitch you approach me sounding like an old beat up box Chevy ‘WHAT UP GANG’.”

JT went viral earlier this week when she addressed female rappers who have been allegedly sneak dissing her.

“Bitches be Sneak dissing letting they flunky wanna be ME ass friends hype they head up but when I come just know I’m not gone play with neither one of yall bitches yall long over due! HATING ASS BITCH!” she wrote in the first tweet.

She continued, “I’m the most supportive bitch ever with receipts! But some where in a bitch air ass head I’m their competition! Out of ALL these bitches who dick you ride you wanna pick me as your enemy L O S E R!”

Last year, JT dismissed rumors of an altercation with Glo at the VMAs, which allegedly stemmed from claims that JT ignored her during the awards show. However, the incident was never officially confirmed.
