Review of B-Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour in London

Pin for B Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour

Having afternoon tea in London is always something I’ve wanted to check off my list! After loads of research, I was so excited to try the afternoon tea bus tour offered by Brigit’s Bakery. Not only did we get to have afternoon tea but also ride on a vintage double-decker bus all around London. Such a fun and exciting way to spend our first afternoon in the city!

Booking Process & Cost

Booking online is super easy.

The process was easy and straightforward. Bookings are quickly completed online through the  company’s website.  During the booking process, you can select which table you’ll be sitting, which menu you require, or if you’d like any of their available add-ons such as champagne or a souvenir.

The traditional afternoon tea bus tour starts at £45 per person plus any additional items you decide to add on. We added on a half bottle of champagne for £28 extra.

Time to get on the Bus!

What a gorgeous vintage double-decker bus.

We chose Victoria Coach Station as our departure point. When you first arrive, check the screens by the main doors to see which gate the bus will depart. The bakery asks that you arrive twenty minutes before your scheduled departure time.

After a long day of travelling, we were excited to get going on the bus. But we ran into a bit of a speed bump when we didn’t board the bus for almost thirty minutes later than our scheduled departure time. We sat waiting for nearly forty-five minutes at the bus station waiting. And if you’ve ever been to Victoria Coach Station, I’m sure you’ll agree it’s not exactly somewhere you’d like to hang out. I was a bit annoyed.

Once we got on the bus, my mood quickly lifted. I was so pleased with everything I saw. The decor is so cute. I loved the retro look! The tables were set, and the food looked delicious! The tea tray was filled with tasty looking sandwiches, muffins, desserts and pastries all ready for us to dig in.

The Afternoon Tea Bus Tour Starts!

Here we go.

During the afternoon tea bus tour, you’ll cruise by some of the most famous tourist sites in London, such as the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, St.James Park, Harrods, and Westminster Abbey to name a few.

Bus Tour Route from B Bakery guidebook.

But if getting a tour of London is your main reason for booking this bus tour you may be disappointed. With the general ambient noise from the other guests chatting and eating plus the sounds of the bus and surrounding traffic, it was pretty hard to hear the tour all the time. If you are looking for an informative tour of London, I would not recommend the tea bus for this reason.

Once you’re whizzing through the crazy London traffic. Bouncing and bumping around on the bus, with the din of the other passengers. Plus, all the yummy food in front of you, the tour becomes the last thing on your mind

And you still do get to see some of the sights. For first-timers to London, the general splendour and craziness of the city are fascinating!

Food & Drinks

Tea Tray on B Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour

Once the bus tour has started on its way, the staff stops by each table and takes your drink order. You can choose from a long list of teas, or if you’re not a tea drinker, they have coffee, cappuccino, lattes, hot chocolate and water. One of my favourite things was the spill-proof cup that they gave us our hot drink in (which we got to take home!).

Alcoholic drinks are available but must be pre-purchased when you complete your booking. They are unable to sell any alcohol during the bus tour, so if this is something you’d like, make sure to add it to your cart during your initial booking. We purchased a half bottle of champagne to drink during the trip. It was the perfect amount for us for the time available after we had our cup of tea.

Champagne on B Bakery afternoon tea bus tour

There were two staff members on board with us plus the bus driver. They were super friendly and accommodating. They were happy to provide us with tips and advice for travelling in London as well as just a friendly chat.

There are so many  different afternoon teas  available in London, so once we narrowed it down, it was pretty easy to choose this company on its uniqueness alone. The idea of having a tour of London while having tea sounded like a lot of fun! And it was!

  • The food was delicious, especially the desserts!
  • The staff was friendly and helpful.
  • The rush of the city passing by created a fun backdrop to our first British afternoon tea experience.

Our bus tour left Victoria Station and toured around the city for about an hour and a half, and we enjoyed every minute of it! I would do it again for sure and recommend it to anyone travelling to London!

All aboard the fantastic B Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour

There are few things more synonymous with London than a cherry red double-decker bus . The popular Routemaster buses are an essential part to London life, loved by locals and tourists alike.

Every day, thousands of double-deckers ply the city streets, covering hundreds of routes and carrying out some five million journeys daily but only a handful of them offer that other quintessentially British experience, afternoon tea.

We jumped on board a revamped traditional red Routemaster bus to sample the B Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour and discovered that sightseeing and scones are a match made in heaven.

The British obsession with Afternoon Tea

Table of Contents

The very British tradition of afternoon tea dates back to 1840 when, feeling peckish one afternoon, the Duchess of Bedford asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter be brought to her room.

This mid-afternoon snack quickly became a daily habit and a social one too; the Duchess regularly invited friends to join her and soon high society ladies would change into their best gowns, gloves and hats to enjoy afternoon tea.

These days, afternoon tea usually involves a quick cuppa and possibly a biscuit but if you want to treat yourself then there are lots of places where you can enjoy  afternoon tea in London .

All about Brigit’s Bakery

The B Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour is the brainchild of Brigit’s Bakery , a French Salon de Thé that first opened in 2010. Founded by a French family, the Blochs, looking to bring French patisseries to London , the cafe quickly became a hit.

Two years later, the family opened a second outpost, this time in  Covent Garden  and, two years later, they bought their first classic Routemaster bus and the idea of the B Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour was born.

Today the company have a handful of original refurbished Routemaster buses and offer a number of themed tea bus tours including Peppa Pig and Paddington Bear tours that are ideal for families with young children.

They also run tours tied to holidays such as their Grinchmas and Christmas Lights tours (the best way to enjoy   London at Christmas ) and a Valentine’s Afternoon Tea.

However, my fourteen-year-old daughter and I decided to be purists and opted for the Classic Afternoon Tea Bus Tour (if you’re looking for something fun to do with  teens in London  then this is a great idea!) and met our driver and crew on a rainy January afternoon near Trafalgar Square.

On board the B Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour

B’s Bakery runs afternoon tea tours throughout the year with multiple tours per day , simply head to the website , choose your dates and time and make a booking. Departure points vary; we left from Northumberland Avenue near Trafalgar Square but some tours depart from Victoria Coach Station at Victoria Station.

The original Routemasters have been refurbished and now come with tables that can seat four . If you can, opt for a table on the top deck that offer the best views; the two tables at the front of the bus on the upper deck can seat two people only.

The afternoon tea bus tour route

If you’re looking to see London’s main sights in one quick tour then this is the perfect way to do it. The 90-minute tour takes in almost all of the most famous landmarks in central London and you get to eat while ticking them off your list!

Setting off from Northumberland Avenue, we passed Trafalgar Square and Nelson’s Column before carrying on past Downing Street and towards the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben .

There’s supposed to be an automated commentary running throughout the tour regaling passengers with fun facts and interesting historical tidbits however, ours only started working half-way through the tour which, I was told, was not usual.

Instead we had a cheery medley of Christmas tunes to keep us entertained! If the commentary is not working when you step on board, make sure to tell one of the members of staff and they will sort it out for you.

Next on our tour was Westminster Abbey before the bus headed to Knightsbridge where we sailed past the bright lights of Harrods .

There were a few comical moments when, stopped at a red traffic light, a regular double decker bus pulled up alongside ours and we could see neighbouring passengers ogling our sandwiches and cakes.

From Knightsbridge the route wound its way towards the Royal Albert Hall , around Hyde Park and past Marble Arch , which was designed by the favoured architect of King George IV, John Nash.

Buckingham Palace was our next stop on our afternoon tea tour before we circled back around Trafalgar Square and to our original departure point.

The tour last around 1hr. 30 minutes but the timing depends on the London traffic so it may take longer.

The B Bakery afternoon tea menu

Sights are all well and good but scones are better according to my daughter so we were delighted to discover that these formed part of the afternoon tea menu on board the B Bakery afternoon tea bus London tour.

B Bakery can cater for a wide range of dietary requirements and offer a range of menus including Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten Free, Pescatarian, and Halal.

We opted for the traditional afternoon tea menu which comes with a selection of finger sandwiches and sweet treats served on a traditional tiered plate stand.

Our savoury sandwiches selection featured ham and cheese, smoked salmon and cream cheese (my personal favourite), and cucumber and cream cheese. Our savoury options also included a mini savoury muffin and mini quiches .

On the top tier was a selection of homemade cakes including a lemon meringue and a chocolate mini cupcake. Half-way through, one of the team came round with warm scones and small pots of jam and clotted cream .

It is a very generous afternoon tea spread but don’t worry if you can’t finish it all, the B Bakery team hand out containers at the end in case you want to take any leftovers home with you.

B Bakery afternoon tea bus tour

Drinks on board the B Bakery tea bus tour

Given that you’re on board a moving bus all drinks are served in a B Bakery themed travel cup to avoid any unnecessary spillages. These cups are yours to take away at the end of the tour.

Tradition dictates that hot tea should be served during afternoon tea and the B Bakery Menu offers a range to choose from including English Breakfast , Earl Grey, Chai Tea, Green Tea and Jasmine Tea. There is a decaf tea option too.

If tea is not your thing then other hot drink options are hot chocolate , a selection of herbal teas and coffee . For any special occasions (or simply because) then a glass of Prosecco is also an option.

Our final thoughts on the B Bakery Tea Bus Tour

Overall we really enjoyed our B Bakery Bus Tour experience. It’s a great way to explore the heart of the city while enjoying afternoon tea at the same time.

For younger children, I would recommend trying the Paddington Bear or Peppa Pig themed bus tours but if you’re visiting  London with teens  then the Classic Afternoon Tea Bus tour is a lot of fun and even the most irascible of teens are guaranteed a great time.

Brigit’s Bakery London Bus Tour Review

There are few things more quintessential when visiting London, or the UK in general, than an afternoon tea. Across the UK hundreds of hotels, restaurants, cafes and other eating establishments put on great selections. But, there is another option – an afternoon tea bus tour.

Tickets for the Brigit’s Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour start from £45 per person, making it really reasonably priced when compared to the prices of many hotel and restaurant. And, unlike the table service hotels and restaurants, you’re also getting the novelty and experience of a bus tour around central London.

So what’s included in the afternoon tea and what should I expect on the tour?

  • Scrummy food
  • On the bus beverages
  • Bus tour route

Brigit’s Bakery: Afternoon Tea & London Bus Tour

Scrummy food.

The afternoon tea on the bus tour is presented on a double-level platter, with a range of sweet and savoury delights. From the stereotypical (but really really good) sandwiches to macaroons and other cakes and pastries, there’s sure to be something you’ll love and devour.

All the sandwiches and cakes are super fresh, light and not too filling; meaning guests are able to savour every flavour available and not feel too full over the course of the hour and a half tour. The platter alone is exquisite but about halfway through the tour, you get offered warm and fresh scones, with clotted cream and jam – something I can rarely turn down, so I hope you don’t either!

Something that was really good to see when chatting to the team and on the Brigit’s Bakery website is that, for those of you with dietary requirements, the bus tour is able to cater to gluten, vegan, veggie and halal requirements. However, I’d still suggest checking their website for the full list of dietary requirements they can and can’t cater to, as these could change on certain days and tours. Also, worth noting, vegan and gluten-free afternoon teas are £3 extra.

Brigit's Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour Food

On The Bus Beverages

As much as the nibbles in an afternoon tea are a showpiece, the drinks are just important. Thankfully, the drinks and the tea selections are just as high quality and extensive as the food.

Every afternoon tea offering includes a selection if ten types of tea and three coffee choices, such as English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Darjeeling teas in addition to Americano and Cappuccino coffees. Hot chocolates, bottled water and some other soft drinks are also available as standard.

If you’re in the mood for something a bit stronger or with a bit of fizz, the Brigit’s Bakery bus offers a range of sparkling wines, prosecco and Champagne as an extra. These can be pre-booked when booking or bought on the bus – which is good as it can be pretty easy to get through a bottle when shared among a few of you.

Prices for the wines and bubbles start from £8 per glass of Prosecco up to £275 for a bottle of Louis Roederer Vintage. Yes, they’re not the cheapest glasses or bottle but, as treat and when split among two or more people, are a fantastic way to add little bit more fizz to your tour.

On my tour, we tried the Prosecco Zia. On the wines list this is cheapest, however, I don’t think anyone really noticed. It’s light, pretty tasty and was generally went really well with the flavours of the sweet and savoury treats on offer.

All Aboard The London Bus Tour

The London bus tour takes around an hour and half (1.5 hours). The tour takes you past and through many of famous streets, attractions and sight of London. So, if you’re looking to see a few of London’s sights in one go, it’s really unique way to get around London.

A vintage Routemaster, the bus has two levels or table, each seating 2 people with comfort and 4 with a bit more of a squeeze. Being an older model of bus, the suspension isn’t the most comfortable when going over Londons many infamous potholes. Basically, what I mean, is the ride can be a bit bumpy, so make sure to keep hold of your drinks or put them in one of the drink holders on your table.

Despite the bumps and the slightly cramped seats, the ride and bus as a whole is actually pretty comfy over the course of the 1.5 hours.

Brigit's Bakery Bus - Tour Bus

What will you see on the bus tour route?

There are two routes of the bus tour you can take with Brigit’s Bakery, a “standard” route and an “evening” route. These are some of the sights you’ll see on each route:

Standard (Day) Route:

The Houses Of Parliament

Buckingham Palace

The Royal Albert Hall

Hyde Park Marble Arch

The London Eye

Trafalgar Square

Evening Route:

Tower Bridge

The Shakespeare Globe

The Tate Modern

Somerset House

St Pauls Cathedral

Unfortunately, you don’t get to get off the bus the visit the actual attractions. However, the bus comes with a recorded guide-commentary (although on some routes they do have an in-person guide) and the staff on the bus are really good at helping point out things and answer any questions.

Like with any bus tour, you’re not guaranteed the best views or picture opportunities 100% of the time, especially when the bus is full. Some attractions might be on the left side when you sit on the right (or vice versa) or another double-decker might pull up next to the bus. In short, you’ll might need to climb over others on the bus (please don’t!) or you’ll have to ask them to take a picture for you.

Where to Book Brigit’s Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour

Hopefully, this has got you looking to plan your next afternoon tea – with a difference. If so, head over to the Brigit’s Bakery Plan Your Tour page for more info and a link to main booking page.

Things To Note

I’ve already touched on a few of the “issues” on the bus (bumpy roads, you might not be able to see everything, dietary requirement costs) but there are a few more bits I think are worth knowing:

  • Access – Old Routemasters aren’t the most accessible to those with mobility problems. While there is a downstairs offering, this a bit of a squeeze and not the most convenient.
  • Toilets – There are no toilets aboard the bus. Make sure you got to the loo before getting on board, the bus doesn’t stop for a loo breaks either.
  • Keep hold of your drinks – Bumps and drinks never end too well and it’s really easy to end up covered in yours or someone else’s drink when on the bus.

Key points when booking:

Cost:

From £45 per person, although for the best views and experience I’d recommend looking at the top deck £55+ options.

You can book via the Brigit’s bakery website or Get Your Guide .

Pick up:

Tours start from a few locations – so be sure to check which is your starting point.

The pick-up points for the bus tours are:

  • Trafalgar Square (8 Northumberland Avenue, WC2N 5BY)
  • London Victoria Coach Station (164 Buckingham Palace Road, SW1W 9TP)
  • Somerset House (Victoria Embankment (A3211), by Somerset House)

Tour departure times:

Departure times for the bus tours differ for each pick-up point. However, on the whole, tours generally depart at 12pm, 12:30pm, 2:30pm, 3pm and 5pm most days. There are also additional tour times at 1pm and 3:30pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, while evening tours times leave around 6pm.

Hopefully, this review has inspired you to book Brigit’s Bakery bus tour of London and sample their yummy afternoon tea. If you have any questions or would like some further information, please feel free to comment below and I’ll try my best to help.

Whilst you’re here, you might like to read more of my London blogs or hear about the best pubs in Clerkenwell and Farringdon (according to me).

B Bakery Bus Tour: The Best Afternoon Tea Bus Tour In London

Posted on Last updated: June 7, 2021

After six years of living in London I have started to acquire a taste for British food (some of it anyway), one of these being afternoon tea. Afternoon tea is a very traditional English meal composed of sandwiches and cakes.

B Bakery offers this traditional English experience with a special twist, in the form of an afternoon tea bus tour !

If you want to experience London in a different way, what could be better than seeing all the main tourist landmarks while savouring delicious food and tea? (Hint; nothing is).

By giving a unique spin to a British classic, B Bakery is without a doubt one of the most quirky places to eat in London . Read on to find out more about our experience on the B Bakery afternoon tea bus tour in London!

Before you read on, have you booked your London hotel already? If not, check out the best areas to stay in London (recommended by a Londoner!)

Getting ready for our afternoon tea bus tour in London

What is afternoon tea?

For those that aren’t acquainted with the glorious British tradition of afternoon tea , I figured I should give you a bit of an introduction about it.

Afternoon tea is a meal first introduced in the 1840s, first as a mini meal between lunch and dinner so that one wouldn’t arrive at dinner too famished. It used to be a social event for high society ladies.

Today it is still considered somewhat a fancy meal and will mostly be consumed on special occasions (unless you have a very traditional English grandma that will make you sandwiches, cakes and tea for when you get home from school).

As the name implies it is usually consumed in the afternoon, however you can have afternoon tea as early as 12pm. It is usually composed of three parts; savoury sandwiches, sweet pastries and scones.

There are lots of great and quirky afternoon teas in London , but the B Bakery one is amongst my favourites.

Our afternoon tea bus tour started at Victoria Coach Station and covered all the main landmarks in London.

There is an automated guide voice that gives a short history of all the main attractions, but the staff will also chime in and talk about smaller landmarks that aren’t mentioned in the tape, which makes it a much more personal and interesting experience.

Setting off from Victoria Station we first drove around Kensington, seeing main landmarks such as Hyde Park Corner, Harrods, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the National History Museum and the Royal Albert Hall.

From there we drove on along the side of Hyde Park until we reached Notting Hill, where we then turned right and continued our tour around Hyde Park.

At the North Eastern corner of Hyde Park we drove past Marble Arch, and then back south to Hyde Park Corner.

Once we there we turned left and drove through central London, seeing Piccadilly Circus, the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and we then ended our tour back at Victoria Coach Station.

The tour lasts approximately 1 hour, but this really depends on the traffic (and the traffic in London can be pretty awful, but hey that means you get to enjoy a longer afternoon tea bus tour)!

Savoury treats

The bottom plate was filled with different types of delicious freshly prepared savoury sandwiches.

Some were afternoon tea classics such as the Cucumber & Mint Finger Sandwich, the Watercress & Egg Pretzel and the Ham & Cheese Sandwich With Mayo & Mustard .

The others were more original and I hadn’t seen them served before at afternoon teas, and included things like a Chestnut mushroom quiche, small BLT Burgers and Smoked Salmon Blinis (these were like small pancakes with cream cheese, cucumber and smoked salmon).

These last three were my personal favourites as they were a bit different from what I was normally used to, and especially tasty.

Sweet treats

The top tray of our stacked dish   was covered in an assortment of mini homemade cakes and tarts. My personal favourite were the Chocolate Mini Cupcake and the Lemon Meringue Tart.

When we were about three quarters of the tour in and had gotten through most of our food we were served warm scones with jam and cream to end the afternoon tea.

These are typical unsalted English cakes, to which you then add jam and cream to add flavour. They are traditionally always served with afternoon tea.

As you may imagine, the traditional drink to have at afternoon tea, is in fact tea.

B Bakery offers a number of different teas from Betjaman & Barton, including traditional flavours like English Breakfast and Earl Grey , but also more alternative flavours such as Darjeeling and Rooibos Jardin Rouge .

If like me you’re not much of a tea drinker, don’t worry as they have other coffee and hot chocolate options.

This is a must! My daughter and I did this in March. Food was delicious! We consider this a highlight of our quick get away to London.

Sunday 9th of June 2019

It's a great activity to do with your family for sure! And the perfect way to combine sightseeing around London with a cool English meal like afternoon tea :)

Tuesday 18th of September 2018

That sounds so amazing, and the food looks so tasty. Now I only need to get to London. :) Thanks so much for sharing this.

No problem, glad you enjoyed the post! Haha definitely worth a visit when you make it to London :)

Friday 14th of September 2018

We took this tour last fall 2017. It was so much fun. As we gathered to board the bus, my husband started noticing there were only a few men in the group. He wasn't so happy with me, but the food and many sights we passed turned him around. No doubt we would recommend this tour, especially to someone who has never been to London. Gives you a good over view of where sights are in town.

I agree, it's a fun way to see all the main landmarks in London! And since there's nice food and tea onboard you don't mind getting stuck in traffic either haha!

Thank you for sharing such a great information and photograph with us. You are doing great work. Keep it up

This looks so much fun! As a Brit I also love that you have pointed out that afternoon tea is NOT something that the English do every day, which seems to be the stereotype. It's a special occasion for us too - so this looks like a great activity for anyone to do in London!

Review of B Bakery London Afternoon Tea Bus Tour

Even after exploring London on a few visits one thing I hadn’t checked off my England bucket list was enjoying afternoon tea. When Rick and I went in June 2018, that was the one thing I wanted to make sure we slotted some time for. This was Rick’s first visit to London so I wanted to make sure he saw all the sights and so when I found a sightseeing tour of London that was combined with a delicious afternoon tea, it was the perfect activity to add to our itinerary.

B Bakery has a physical location, but I was drawn by their variety of themed tea tours, both on a bus or on a Thames cruise! We opted for an afternoon tea tour on their outfitted double decker bus and had a great time. Below is our review of the afternoon tea bus tour with B Bakery.

London Tour

The afternoon tea bus tour is about an hour and half – can be longer if traffic is a bit congested. The seats are comfy and when you’re stuck at a traffic light you’re easily distracted by all the goodies and hot tea in front of you. They have commentary on the bus to describe what you’re seeing but the commentary could be hard to hear at times but was still useful when you picked it up.

Some of the icons you see on this London sightseeing tour:

  • Buckingham Palace
  • Royal Albert Hall
  • Trafalgar Square

Customer service & booking

The online booking process was easy and you pick out your menu, seats, and purchase any add-ons at the time of your booking.

The tour started right on time and the staff was nice. The food was already waiting at your table and then they come around ask what type of tea you want to drink during your tour. Our server asked if we wanted our prosecco first or at the end of the tour and we had it at the beginning. She asked if we were celebrating anything and it was a few days before my birthday, which I told her, and then she served me an extra chocolate cupcake later on the tour, which was a fun surprise!

Food & drink

We booked the traditional tea menu which had a variety of savory sandwiches and sweet treats. Some of the finger sandwiches included a cucumber and mint sandwich, watercress and egg on a pretzel bun, and a ham and cheese with mayo and mustard. There was also a mini quiche and smoked salmon blini. The sandwiches were tasty and flavorful and the serving size was just right for the tour’s duration.

We knew the desserts were going to be amazing (it is hosted by a bakery after all), but the mouthwatering cakes and tarts included a mini chocolate cupcake, a passionfruit, mango, and coconut tart, and a vanilla cream pastry. They also come through during the ride to serve a hot scone with clotted cream and jam. They met our expectations for the desserts as they were delicious and we could have easily eaten another six chocolate cupcakes or those mango tarts.

For teas, they offer a variety of leaves from Betjaman & Barton: Earl Grey, English Breakfast, darjeeling, green, jasmine, rooibos jardin rouge, and peppermint. If tea isn’t your cup of tea, they also serve water, coffees, and hot chocolate. They serve your tea in a to-go souvenir mug, so no worrying about spilling your hot drink on the bus.

We booked their traditional menu but I also appreciated the variety of menus they offer, including nut-free, dairy and gluten-free, vegan, vegan and gluten-free, and a Celiacs-friendly menu.

The starting price for this bus tour of London is £45, though we did spend a bit more as we added a glass of prosecco each and bought dedicated seating at the front of the bus on the top deck – totally worth it, but only works for couples. I thought the price for the tour and all the yummy goodies was appropriate.

Overall, the experience of having tea on the go was really fun and let us kill two birds with one stone when we had limited time in the city. I’d recommend it if you’re looking for afternoon tea in London with a twist!

Sharing our travel stories to inspire yours, loving london – b bakery bus afternoon tea tour of london review.

Afternoon tea is one of those must-do experiences for visitors to London, and Londoners alike. What isn’t to love about sitting for an hour or two with the ones you love whilst demolishing a selection of cakes and pastries. There are so many afternoon teas on offer around the capital that there is something to suit everyone. Recently, I was lucky enough to enjoy one of the coolest new options. A sight-seeing and afternoon tea mash up with Brigit Bakery; the vintage Routemaster B Bakery bus afternoon tea tour of London .

I was a guest of B Bakery and www.buyagift.co.uk for this experience but all opinions are entirely my own.

What Is B Bakery?

The b bakery bus – the classic red london routemaster, where to catch the b bakery bus afternoon tea tour, seating options on the b bakery bus afternoon tea tour, how much does the b bakery bus afternoon tea tour cost, the food aboard the b bakery bus afternoon tea tour, the drinks aboard the b bakery bus afternoon tea tour, the b bakery bus afternoon tea tour route, what is it like aboard the b bakery bus afternoon tea tour, important information for the b bakery bus afternoon tea tour, final thoughts on the b bakery bus afternoon tea tour.

Brigit Bakery (or B Bakery) is a patisserie specialising in afternoon tea with a french accent. They call it l’afternoon tea, I call it un petit délicieuse. They started in London back in 2010 and now have a branch in Covent Garden, and one in Bath, Their afternoon teas took to the road in 2014 with the purchase of their own Routemaster. All of the baked goods for the London afternoon tea tours are produced in their Bermondsey kitchen (but more about those later).

b bakery bus tour departure point london photos

Wandering around London, we have spotted this beautiful red bus whizz past us. It is a Routemaster, the iconic red double-decker bus that filled London’s streets in the 1950s and 1960s. The back platform is open which back in the day made running for the bus and jumping on a lot easier. now, with health and safety, it just makes an excellent spot for a quick photoshoot.

b bakery bus tour departure point london photos

Running around like a headless chicken, I managed to dash straight past the bus on the wrong side of the road. I am notoriously late for things and was getting flustered thinking that I would miss the departure.  If your bus departs from 8 Northumberland Avenue, you’ll find it on the opposite side of the road from the Grand At Trafalgar Hotel, on the South-bound side of the road.

The B Bakery afternoon tea bus has eleven tables, four on the lower deck and six on the top decks. These are for sale as tables of two or four.

Prices start at £45 per person. For that, you get a seat on the lower deck, just like we did. For a little more you will be seated on the upper deck, giving you a better view of the sights you are passing. Finally, for a bit more (up to £65) you can sit at one of the two VIP tables. These are at the front of the upper deck, so you have both side and front windows. This is the perfect spot for photography.

We love an afternoon tea, read all about the time we took High Tea at the Victoria Falls Hotel.

b bakery bus tour departure point london photos

As you board, you will see your cakes and sandwiches set out and ready to dive into. This made me a little wary, thinking that they would be dry, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Brigit Bakery has upped the bar when it comes to afternoon tea treats.

The sandwiches were not AT ALL dry, even the ham and cheese finger variety. Everything must have been very fresh. My favourite one was the salmon pretzel, despite being super paranoid about having poppy seeds in my teeth for the rest of the bus ride! The sandwiches we had were:

  • Pastrami burger with tomato salad and mustardy mayonnaise – Quite a filling choice but the pastrami was lovely and tender.
  • Ham and cheese and whole grain mayonnaise on granary bread – Finger sandwich perfection.
  • Salmon pretzel with chives, cream cheese and cucumber – This was an unusual twist on a classic. The pretzel was soft and slightly chewy. I love salmon so I thoroughly enjoyed this and thought the balance was just right.

Normally included in the menu, you will get:

  • Minty cucumber sandwich and cream cheese on beetroot bread
  • Seasonal savoury muffin

b bakery bus tour departure point london photos

Oh tiny cakes, how I love you! Being with a group of other girls, I had to eat these slowly and in a delicate manner but I could have eaten the lot in four bites. I really enjoyed trying to work out the flavours of each cake. The mango and caramel tart defeated me so I was very happy to find it on the internet. I couldn’t decide between the four cakes as they were all delicious and baked to perfection. You could really tell that these came from a proper bakery.

  • Vanilla and apricot compote choux – A gently fruity cream and a lovely craquelin top made these choux buns a level up.
  • Queen sablé and cream cheese mousse – The buttery, crumbly base and super light cream cheese mousse were a lovely light nibble. I took some pictures with it but couldn’t resist eating the berry on the top which rather ruined it.
  • Strawberry cupcake – Just SO cute!
  • Caramel, mango and cream tart – These were like a gorgeous creme brulee flavour combined with subtle mango. I was tempted to hoover up the rest on the plate (that belonged to my afternoon tea buddies).

b bakery bus tour departure point london photos

For some reason, we weren’t served scones despite the normal tour including them. Everyone was getting pretty full so I am not sure they missed them but for me, it is not a full afternoon tea without them.

Dietary Requirements

B Bakery can accommodate all kinds of dietary requirement, I was quite impressed when I saw the options. Be you vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, gluten-free or halal, they can cater for you!

Onboard, there was a surprisingly nice selection of teas. However, I think they all came in tea bag form. Trying to deal with a teapot and loose leaf tea on a moving bus would be extremely dangerous. Instead, all the tea is served in super cute plastic cups with screw-on lids. Once your tea is brewed, there is a little plastic tub to pop the tea bag in. The best bit?

You get to keep the mug forever!

b bakery bus tour departure point london photos

If you are not into tea, you can choose a coffee or hot chocolate. I couldn’t resist a coffee once I smelled the glorious warming whiff of someone else’s.

We were also treated to a glass of prosecco. These are available to pre-purchase with B Bakery. You can opt for a glass at £8 or bottles of bubbly ranging from prosecco at £28 all the way up to a bottle of  Castelnau Hors Serie champagne at £125.

b bakery bus tour departure point london photos

Now, as you know, I am a spiller so I was worried about my drinks going flying but every table has cup holders for each person…a simple and ingenious fix!

The average tour length is 1.5 hours, and in that time the bus takes you past some of west London’s top sights. As you pass each one, a commentary is played over the speakers.

b bakery bus tour departure point london photos

We began the journey with the windows open and the sunlight streamed in. Halfway through the tour, the British summer returned to form and there was a huge rain shower. A deluge pelted down from above and we hurriedly wound the window handles to close them. The windows steamed up, and with the heavy rain, we struggled to get good photos. I have used some from my back catalogue for you. Here are some of the highlights;

Buckingham Palace

See if you can spot the King as you zoom past one of his London residences.

b bakery bus tour departure point london photos

Westminster Bridge

Big Ben, the grand old bell inside the Elizabeth Tower, stands close to the River Thames. Alongside the Houses of Parliament is Westminster Abbey, and across the river is the London Eye.

b bakery bus tour departure point london photos

Royal Albert Hall

This grand Victorian hall, home of the BBC Proms in the summer, Cirque Du Soleil in winter and all sorts in between, this is where I used to work so I always get a little overexcited when I see it.

b bakery bus tour departure point london photos

The Royal Albert Hall is also home to the  Opera Afternoon Tea. Check it out here!

Churchill Pub

Not a famous sight…unless you are an Instagrammer that is. This pretty pub is a social media classic.

Trafalgar Square

Lord Nelson stands atop his column and keeps an eye on the tourists below. Beyond the fountains and the arty fourth plinth, there are two of London’s favourite free museums, The National Gallery and Portrait Gallery.

b bakery bus tour departure point london photos

This is a great way to spend the afternoon and of course, as with all things, there are highlights and lowlights. Other than the food and drinks, here are my favourite things:

  • Some classic tunes were played during the trip which was really fun. If you had a large group of friends you could have a great singalong as you accidentally sprayed cake crumbs across the table.
  • The staff were very friendly and made sure we had everything we needed.
  • We were offered little cake boxes to take home any leftover nibbles….we didn’t have any.
  • The tea, coffee, juice and water are unlimited so you can have seven cups of tea if you like!

b bakery bus tour departure point london photos

There are some disadvantages of being on a bus rather than on a train, or indeed a non-moving tea room.

  • There is no toilet on the bus so bear that in mind when you are enjoying your seventh cup of tea.
  • As the space is quite enclosed, it can get very noisy (especially when you invite a bus full of female bloggers).
  • The London traffic can be rather stop/start which makes it a  little difficult not to spill (especially if you are like me and can cover yourself in anything and everything).
  • Some chairs face backwards so if you are prone to travel sickness you’ll need to make sure you book the right kind of seats.

b bakery bus tour departure point london photos

It is also worth noting that our bus was decorated with ladies in mind. There were lots of bright pink and drawings of “ladies about town” on the cups and tables. I don’t know if the other bus is the same, but I thought it was worth mentioning if you are planning to come in a mixed group.

b bakery bus tour departure point london photos

If you are thinking of booking your spot on this super fun vintage bus afternoon tea, here are some things you might like to know.

  • The best place to book is on the  Brigit Bakery website .
  • If you are buying it as a gift for someone else, then the  buyagift  website is the best place to get a voucher.
  • Brigit Bakery also does gin afternoon teas, Thames cruise afternoon teas and fun seasonal options too.
  • B Bakery Bus Afternoon Tea tours depart from 8 Northumberland Avenue and Victoria Coach Station.
  • Prices range from £45 – £65.
  • There is no toilet on board so pop to the bathroom before you board. The bus will not stop for toilet breaks.
  • The tour lasts around 90 minutes depending on traffic.
  • B Bakery can cater for lots of different dietary requirements but they cannot guarantee nut-free.

b bakery bus tour departure point london photos

This is not London’s cheapest afternoon tea, but it does combine two activities that make a day trip to London special. I had a whale of a time and enjoyed absolutely everything I ate and drank. Plus, I managed to get it all in my mouth without spilling…no mean feat on a moving bus. I think that the  B Bakery vintage bus afternoon tea  would be a perfect experience for girly catch-ups with a difference or hen parties. It doesn’t feel stuffy like some tea rooms do so you can just relax and enjoy the sights, good conversation and mouth-watering B Bakery goodies.

Afternoon Tea and a Tour of London with B Bakery

Afternoon Tea and a Tour of London with B Bakery

What’s more quintessentially London than afternoon tea and a double-decker bus? How about afternoon tea ON a double-decker bus! That is exactly what Miss P, Miss V, and I did when we went to London and took the B Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour. The Lovely Ladies and I had been to London before (you can read about those experiences here , here , and here ), so we were looking for something a little different, and indulging in a proper British afternoon tea, while sightseeing around the city definitely fit the bill.

The B Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour is a light-hearted, whimsical way to enjoy London’s main sights. Guests board a vintage 1960’s Routemaster bus, and are directed to their tables, which are already set and look stunning!

Pastries offered on the B Bakery's Afternoon Tea Tour

An array of savory and sweet treats await guests on the B Bakery Afternoon Tea Tour. Photo credit: Monique White

We took our seats on the top deck (because you HAVE to sit on the top deck of a double-decker bus) and nibbled on a selection of amazing finger sandwiches and pastries, and sipped tea from souvenir cups with lids to prevent spilling as we passed iconic London landmarks such as Big Ben, Westminster Abbey , the Victoria and Albert Museum and Buckingham Palace.

As delightful as the B Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour is I should caution you that it is by no means a traditional tour. It is not a hop on – hop off bus that allows you to get off and have a more in-depth look at the sights. The bus whizzes by various landmarks, and what you actually see can depend on where you’re sitting or if the bus is stopped at a red light.

Additionally, there is music playing, people chatting away, and the jostling that comes with eating and drinking in a moving vehicle, so the commentary is muddled. My advice to any first-time visitors or people who want a more substantial sightseeing experience is to supplement the tea bus tour with another tour.

Afternoon Tea

Where the sightseeing aspect of the tour may be lacking, the afternoon tea part absolutely makes up for it. B Bakery is an actual brick-and-mortar, family-owned bakery in Covent Garden, so the treats, which include a variety of sandwiches and an assortment of desserts, were delicious! And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, they brought out warm scones with jam and clotted cream!

Scones on B Bakery Afternoon Tea Tour

The tea flows freely and as frequently as you’d like, however, there are no additional servings of the food, but the finger sandwiches and pastries were quite filling, and I was happy for the to-go boxes that were provided for the leftovers.

B Bakery Afternoon Tea souvenir cup

Enjoy unlimited refills of tea in a souvenir cup.

No spills on bus tour with cups with lids

Cups with lids prevent spills during the afternoon tea tour.

B Bakery has several tours to choose from, including an afternoon tea cruise on the Thames, an afternoon picnic tea, a Gin lovers tea, and they offer gluten-free, vegetarian and Halal options for a slight additional cost.

Prices for the B Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour start at £45 ( € 51, $60), and I recommend booking in advance to guarantee a table on the top deck of the bus.

B-Bakery afternoon tea bus tour

Yes the B-Bakery bus tour is that perfect combination of both afternoon tea and a bus tour of central London. Imagine the faces of all those on ‘regular’ red London buses, or even those on the open top tours, as you whizz past with a cake stuffed in your face…. pinky extended for class totally! So that’s the basic concept – afternoon tea on a bus as it goes through London traffic past major tourist sites.

B-Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour on What's Katie Doing? blog

The perfect Afternoon Tea bus tour of London!

What’s better is that Brigit (the B of B-bakery) Bakery makes amazing cakes! The tea and other drink selection is also top notch. The bus has attendants ensuring that everyone is fed and watered and to ensure safety and there are announcements about all the sites you go past. I was lucky that my sister bought this as a birthday treat for me and my mum.

Not quite sure what Afternoon Tea is? Find out more in this post:

What is afternoon tea?

The bus departs from gate 1 in Victoria Coach Station, so we waited until called forward to board the converted Route Master:

B-Bakery afternoon tea bus tour on What's Katie Doing? blog

A London icon that has been converted into the perfect afternoon tea bus!

You would easily spot this bus in traffic! We had a table on the top deck, so we headed up to see where we were located:

B-Bakery afternoon tea bus tour on What's Katie Doing? blog

Some happy customers – check out the flowery decor around them

The conversion has resulted in 2 tables of two facing forwards at the front of the bus, then another 4 tables sitting up to four (we were on table 6). The seating was the old routemaster seats, so a bit snug on a hot summer’s day! Each of the tables was set up with our afternoon tea and cup holders ready for our tea or hot/cold drink of choice. There was a definite flowery feel about the bus with the pink highlights and the flowers everywhere too!

B-Bakery afternoon tea bus tour on What's Katie Doing? blog

Cup holders and lids – very important for hot tea safety!

Sarah had ordered the special book for us to take away – it included the route of the bus tour and information on all the sights we saw. Note that the bus has no toilet and children under 5 aren’t allowed… but enough of the boring stuff! On to the food:

So this is what greeted us when we boarded… nom! I couldn’t wait to get stuck in, but we had to wait to take photos obviously….!

B-Bakery afternoon tea bus tour on What's Katie Doing? blog

So the etiquette is to start with the savoury (bottom layer)

We had mini smoked salmon and cream cheese bites (or mini bagels sans hole?); chicken salad sandwiches; cucumber sandwiches (naturally! It’s not an afternoon tea without!); mini quiches; and mini baguettes with tomato, cheese and pesto. Basically a lot of yummy stuff!

B-Bakery afternoon tea bus tour on What's Katie Doing? blog

So cute!! Mini salmon roll/bite/bagel in coordinating bright colours

Now this is where the party is at! First I have to say I adore their cake stands… such cute details!

B-Bakery afternoon tea bus tour on What's Katie Doing? blog

drool…

On our bus tour we tucked into mini chocolate cup cakes; mini lemon meringue pies; the random mini cake with cream and healthy fruit; and those delightful jam and custard filled doughnut thingies… (technical term – they are the red ones with the green blobs on top! oh and they were so tasty!!)

A post shared by Katie Hughes ?✈️? (@whatskatiedoing) on Jul 15, 2017 at 2:38pm PDT

When you had eaten most of this and drunk your tea/coffee/hot chocolate/cold drink, they brought out scones!!!

B-Bakery afternoon tea bus tour on What's Katie Doing? blog

Scones are a must for a British Afternoon Tea!

These traditional treats served with proper clotted cream and strawberry jam defeated the rest of my party. But not to worry if you don’t finish everything, they have take away boxes so you can enjoy later!

The Verdict

Well I was happily stuffed by the end of our bus ride. The amount of food and the time actually worked quite well, and with the take away boxes available you didn’t have to eat all of it if full. We enjoyed this pretty girly afternoon (the rest of the bus was filled with a baby shower!). We did see that you can arrange to bring bubbles should you be celebrating a special occasion, so that’s one to consider.

B-Bakery afternoon tea bus tour on What's Katie Doing? blog

A happy Katie and my favourite sister, Sarah! (shh don’t tell my other sister!)

I’m tempted to try out their other bus tours with gin (obviously!) and the sushi and cocktail one with Hayman’s gin looks fabulous too! Ps we did lord it up over the regular bus users going past and waved like the Royal family lol! Check out the details on their website here: B-Bakery afternoon tea bus tours

Is the bus wheelchair accessible?

To allow a great experience for all wheelchair users, we modified the bottom level of one of our Routemaster buses to add a ramp. The conversion is the first of its kind in a 1960 classic vehicle. And, we believe, it's a real step forward for the inclusivity and accessibility of private event transport in London.

Our adaptations allow for one wheelchair to be fully secured and strapped in (facing forward) at Table 4. We also have an option to comfortably accommodate two additional wheelchair users. This is as long as the passengers can transfer to a table seat. We can accommodate the additional customers at Tables 1, 2, or 4 and store wheelchairs on board for the duration of the tour.

Our accessible bus is not visible via our online booking system at the moment. If you wish to book one of our tours, please fill in this form or call our booking team on 020 3026 1188 and let us know about your preferred date and time from the following options:
