Our inspiring school trip to CERN’s Science Gateway Centre

CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire) is the world’s largest particle physics laboratory.

In October 2023, I had the opportunity to go on a trip with my school to the new CERN Science Gateway Centre in Geneva, Switzerland. With a group of 25 Stowe School students, I spent four days enjoying the landmarks of Geneva and exploring the site of a mammoth, world-changing science experiment.

From my school, it was the physics and chemistry A-Level students who were invited on this expedition to learn more about particle theory and what future career opportunities lie in store for science students.

When we arrived at the Science Gateway Centre, we were met by a large, sci-fi looking building that stretched over the tramway below.

We had a great, immersive presentation about how the detector works, while being sat 56 metres above a hot beam of particles travelling at 99.995% the speed of light!

We were checked in to the site by the friendly team, and then directed to the staff restaurant where we were able to enjoy a variety of delicious fresh meals, alongside Nobel-prize winning scientists.

I am not sure if they used the four trillion degrees celsius plasma beam from the Large Hadron Collider, or just a blowtorch to melt the sugar, but the crunch on the crème brûlée was divine!

Physicists and engineers at CERN, which was founded in 1954, use the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles. 

The instruments used at CERN are purpose-built  particle accelerators  and  detectors . Accelerators boost beams of particles to high energies before the beams are made to collide with each other or with stationary targets. Detectors observe and record the results of these collisions. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s largest and most powerful  particle accelerator . 

Young people can discover their inner scientist in hands-on education labs at the Science Gateway Centre. 

Its new Science Gateway Centre is aimed at pupils aged five to 19 and features a host of exhibitions and laboratory workshops. 

A selection of science shows cover states of matter, superconductivity, particle detection, engineering and big data. These are shown in a 900-seater auditorium.  

After this nourishing meal, we were taken to the CERN Control Centre, where we got to enjoy the exclusive sight of the background operations of the CERN experiments. In the control centre, we had a Q&A with one of the engineers from the site, who answered all our questions about what happens at CERN.

Next in the schedule was a short coach-ride to the ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) detector, which is one of eight large detectors used for measuring the output of heavy-ion particle collisions. We had a great, immersive presentation about how the detector works, while being sat 56 metres above a hot beam of particles travelling at 99.995% the speed of light.

The day finished with the interactive galleries in the Science Gateway Centre where we got to experience an in-depth explanation of each component of the Large Hadron Collider, alongside an exhibit where you get to experience being a photon in a quantum realm.

Overall, the trip was very informative and fun, giving the students a greater understanding of the A-Level physics and chemistry content, as well as expanding our sights for the future of science.

Founded in 1954, the Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire (European Organisation for Nuclear Research) was created to answer some of the most fundamental questions regarding our universe – namely, what is the universe made of?

Using purpose-built colliders, such as the world-famous Large Hadron Collider, the scientists at CERN make subatomic particles collide with each other at close to the speed of light. They then use detectors to see how the particles interact and this tells them more about the fundamental laws of nature.

On your educational visit to CERN, you’ll enjoy a 3-hour tour of the laboratory site in Geneva, spanning the Franco - Swiss border. Your tour will start with a video introduction to CERN. You’ll then be able to visit two areas of the site, such as control rooms, research facilities or engineering facilities.

You’ll also be able to explore the two permanent exhibitions, where you’ll see a scale version of the Large Hadron Collider (unfortunately, the real one isn’t open to the public) and you’ll find out more about the scientists who created and maintain it.

CERN Accelerating science

Language switcher, guided tours for schools, a short introduction to the laboratory followed by a visit to two experiment sites or technology facilities accompanied by our official guides. school tours must be booked in advance.

Every year, CERN welcomes almost 100 000 visitors from all over the world, who come to learn about its installations from our official guides. 40% of these visitors are school pupils. Guided tours of CERN are free of charge.

For safety reasons, most of our visit point are not open to pupils younger than 12 years old. Certain sites are open to primary-school pupils from the age of 8; please contact us for information if you are a local primary school teacher. The group must include at least one accompanying adult for every 12 minor pupils.

A school tour lasts three hours and consists of an introductory talk about CERN and a visit to two operational sites. These may be accelerators, control rooms, technical facilities or high-technology workshops.

In addition to your guided tour, you can discover the two permanent exhibitions at your leisure: Microcosm , next to CERN Reception, and the  Universe of Particles , on the ground floor of the Globe of Science and Innovation. You can also subscribe to one of the S'Cool LAB workshop (14 years old and upwards).

Please note that the visits to the underground installations are extremely limited and that some site, underground in particular, are not accessible to visitors below 16.

Moscow accelerator creates first beam

The TeraWatt Accumulator (TWAC) project at Moscow’s Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP) has successfully passed its proof-of-principle test. A bunch of carbon-4+ ions from near the laser ion source were pre-accelerated in the accelerator/ accumulator facility’s new U-3 pre-injector, injected and accelerated in the UK booster ring to 300 MeV per nucleon, stripped down to 6+ and stacked into the U-10 storage ring.

This marks the completion and commissioning of the new facility’s main systems – ion source, ion pre-injector, radiofrequency and power supply for the booster ring, beam transport lines and pulsed magnetic elements.

The essence of ITEP’s TWAC project is to upgrade and modify the ITEP accelerator complex so that it will have a new unique capability for investigating the following fields:

• extreme states of matter with high density and temperature, and their relation to the physics stellar interiors;
• basic research into the properties of the nuclear matter (relativistic nuclear physics);
• medicine and radiobiology for tumour therapy using carbon ions.

The project takes advantage of a heavy-ion accelerator facility based on two existing synchrotron rings, and it uses a special stripping technique for stacking pulses accelerated in the UK booster into the U-10 storage ring.

For this first phase the ion source, based on a 5J/0.5 Hz TEA CO 2 laser, has been operated and installed in the U 3 pre-injector area. The 20 mA/20 µs carbon ion beam was matched to the 2 MV/2.5 MHz pre-injector.

The accelerated 16 MeV carbon-4+ ion beam was guided by the new beam transport line to the UK ring and injected. The intensity measured at the injection point is around 1.5 x 10 10 /15 µs. The carbon beam is then circulated in the UK ring at constant field.

The power supply of the UK booster ring magnets, of the vacuum system and of the radiofrequency accelerating cavities has been upgraded and the carbon beam accelerated to 300 MeV per nucleon.

Magnetic components of the beam-transfer line connecting the UK and U-10 rings required for the multi-turn injection scheme have been manufactured, installed and adjusted.

For the second phase of the project, the beamline for extraction to the beam-target interaction area will be designed and constructed this year. Focusing elements and the interaction vacuum chamber will be manufactured and installed in the experimental area.

Special attention will be paid to research and development for modern and sophisticated diagnostics for measurements of dense plasma parameters under unique conditions.

Two new beam transport lines and related slow extraction systems will be designed for beam delivery to the medical and nuclear physics experimental areas. The application of electron cooling for increasing the phase space density of accumulated beam will be investigated and the design of the new linac-injector will be completed.

During the third phase (January 2002 – December 2003), experimental facilities for medical physics and for relativistic nuclear physics will be commissioned. A powerful CO 2 laser with 100 J/20 ns output at 1 Hz will be set in operation.

Together with the upgrading of the main accelerator-accumulator systems and with implementation of the pulse compression system, the intensity of the heavy-ion beam will then reach the maximal (target) values:

• in ion acceleration mode, supplying up to 4.3 GeV/nucleon and up to 10 11 particles/s;
• in ion accumulation mode, 300-700 MeV/nucleon and10 12 10 13 particles per 100 ns (approximately) pulse;
• in medical application mode, some 250 MeV/nucleon, 10 9 -10 10 particles/s.
