The city was later called Madraspattinam, which was a fishing village near the first English Fort.

Why visit Chennai

Here’s what the city has to offer...

Chennai, a city that was until recently called Madras, was one of the earliest settlements of the East India Company in India. Today, it is India’s 4th largest city and the capital of Tamil Nadu, a state that sees the highest number of tourist arrivals each year. Colourful temples, grand colonial buildings, bustling markets, spicy south Indian fare, iconic Filter Kaapi, classical music and dance, the finest silk and jewellery stores and the larger than life movie stars – there are many unique cultural encounters that a visitor can look forward to.

An hour’s drive from the city is the Mamallapuram group of monuments, a UNESCO world site of rock cut structures from the 7th and 8th centuries, and to the north is Pulicat lake, a haven for bird watchers and nature lovers.

Golden Triangle Tour 4 Days From Chennai with Return Flights Tour

Golden Triangle Tour 4 Days From Chennai with Return Flights

We are very happy with Golden Triangle Tour for 4 days from Chennai with return flights and it was an incredible experience. From the moment I booked my tour, the travel agency took care of all the arrangements and made sure everything was perfect. The first destination on the tour was Delhi, the capital city of India. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and gave us a detailed history of the city as we visited popular landmarks like the Red Fort, India Gate, and Qutub Minar. The highlight of the day was definitely the rickshaw ride through the bustling streets of Old Delhi. It was a unique and exciting way to experience the city. The next day, we headed to Agra to see the magnificent Taj Mahal. It was even more beautiful in person than in pictures. Our guide told us the romantic story behind the construction of this iconic monument and we were able to capture some amazing photos. We also visited the Agra Fort and learned about the Mughal empire and its influence on the city. The final destination on the tour was Jaipur, also known as the 'Pink City'. The city was full of vibrant colors and rich culture. We visited the Amber Fort, which was a stunning piece of architecture. Our guide took us to a local market where we got to shop for some traditional Rajasthani handicrafts. We also got to taste some delicious local food, including the famous Rajasthani thali. The tour ended with a flight back to Chennai, but the memories and experiences will stay with me forever. The tour was well-organized and all the accommodations and transportation were top-notch. The tour guides were friendly, helpful, and had a deep knowledge of the places we visited. I highly recommend the Golden Triangle Tour for anyone looking to explore the rich history and culture of India. It's the perfect blend of sightseeing, cultural experiences, and delicious food. And with the convenience of return flights from Chennai, it's a hassle-free way to travel. I can't wait to plan my next trip with this travel agency.

South India Tour Package with Chennai, Kanchipuram, Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Thanjavur, Trichy including meals

South India Tour Package that included a visit to Chennai, Kanchipuram, Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Thanjavur, and Trichy. The tour was organized by a reputable travel company and included all meals, which made the trip even more enjoyable. Our journey began in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. The city was bustling with people and I was immediately captivated by its vibrant culture and rich history. Our tour guide took us to some of the must-see attractions such as the Marina Beach, Fort St. George, and the Kapaleeshwarar Temple. We also got the chance to try some mouth-watering South Indian cuisine in Chennai, which was an absolute treat for the taste buds. Next on the itinerary was Kanchipuram, known as the 'Golden City of a Thousand Temples'. This ancient city is famous for its silk sarees and beautiful temples, which we got to explore. The Kamakshi Amman Temple and the Kailasanathar Temple were the highlights of our visit to Kanchipuram. We also had the opportunity to witness the traditional process of silk weaving, which was a unique experience. Mahabalipuram was our next stop, and it was a true delight. The stunning Shore Temple, Pancha Rathas, and the rock-cut caves were some of the architectural wonders that we got to see. The town also had a charming beach where we enjoyed a peaceful evening watching the sunset. Pondicherry, a former French colony, was a pleasant change from the other cities. The French Quarter with its colorful buildings and old-world charm was a photographer's paradise. We also visited the famous Aurobindo Ashram and enjoyed a relaxing walk along the Promenade Beach. Thanjavur, also known as the 'Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu', was a fascinating blend of history and culture. We visited the Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and learned about its rich history. The city is also known for its intricate Tanjore paintings, and we got to see some beautiful pieces of art. Our last stop was Trichy, a city with a rich past and a vibrant present. The Rockfort temple, perched on a 273 feet high rock, was a sight to behold. We also visited the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, one of the largest functioning Hindu temples in the world. The city also had a bustling market where we picked up some souvenirs to take back home. Throughout the tour, we were treated to delicious South Indian meals. From idlis and dosas to biryanis and curries, the food was always flavorful and authentic. Our tour guide also made sure to introduce us to some local delicacies, which added to the overall cultural experience. Overall, the South India Tour Package with Chennai, Kanchipuram, Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Thanjavur, and Trichy was a memorable and enriching experience. Classical South India - Tamilnadu And Kerala !

The guide in CHENNAI was speaking so fast I could not understand his English. If not he tried to show me so many things and I thank him for that The guide in Mahabalipuram was ok but he was not so knowledgeable The guide in Pondhichery was better and very pleasant Raja was the guide Thanjavur. He was not so good and his knowledge of the Museum was not accurate. Govind was our guide in Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple and at the river Cauvery. The importance of the rituals in the Cauvery river was not well explained. His presentation was very confused. Raja was our guide in Madurai. The visit of the MEENAKSHI AMMAN TEMPLE in Madurai was very important for me and the presentation was not good for my taste. confusing is my overall rating Thomas Kuttuvayalil was our guide in the Spices Plantation. He was perfect, knowledgeable and he loves nature. Jayan was our guide in the TEA TRAIL - Connemara plantation. Very good knowledge, clear presentation and a lot of humor. In the backwaters, we had a great team / Suresh the captain and Bindu the cook. They were wonderful and what a great lunch. Thank you to both of them Georges was our guide in Kochi. His knowledge was ok but his presentation was limited to simple facts. he could have done better.

Essence of Idyllic South India

we're very satisfied with the service and the driver provided by the company. Everything was as it'd been promised and discussed before since we'd a long chat before purchasing this tour. Highly recommended tour operator with the right customer approach.

Chennai to Kochi - 9 days Tour

Chennai to Kochi - 9 days

Our guide made the tour special by stopping to show us interesting things along the way as we were a very small group. If we had been a bigger group this flexibility would not have been possible and I think then the tour would have been too many temples. However, the tour as we had it was excellent as we saw a lot of the rural areas and small villages. Note that this tour does not include a tour of Chennai or Kochi so try to stay an extra day before and after the tour to visit these places by yourself. Train ride was great, nothing to fear; hotels all comfortable but out of the city center; guide and driver excellent and the people of India are the friendliest in the world.

Excursions for the School Children – 2023

Student Excursion – Jan-Mar 2023

by Rajaraman Krishnan (Volunteer Asha Chennai)

Asha Chennai organized multiple excursions for students from schools supported by Amazon. These excursions were organized at Sangamam, Thulasi and Pearl project areas.

Here are the photos taken all these excursions. Here are some general details of the excursions followed by details of the 8 independent excursions that were organized.

General Details

Which Areas? We organized the excursion in all the geographical areas that we supported. At Chennai, Guduvanchery area, the schools weren’t willing/able to get the necessary permissions to organize them. We organized them at Thiruvallur, Thoothukudi/Thirunelveli and Thiruvannamalai district schools.

How Many? The limit on the number of excursions organized was not mainly funds. If we take more than 2 or 3 buses full of children, managing them was difficult. Therefore in a weekend, at one location, we organized excursion for 2 or 3 buses full of children. Each excursion meant a lot of effort on the part of the coordinators and volunteers. This also limited the number. We organized in total 8 excursions with 21 buses for a total of about 1160 children and 135 teachers from 45 schools.

Which Schools? The excursion needed to be at least legally organized by the school authorities with Asha/Amazon funding the same. We couldn’t take children from schools that were unwilling to take up that responsibility. We mainly covered schools supported by Amazon. In some areas neighbouring schools that were supported directly by Asha was also taken for the excursion.

Which Students? All the 4 th and 5 th std students were taken for the excursion. Even in the past we have organized the excursion mainly for 4 th and 5 th std students. Most of our schools are primary schools. Class 1 to 3 children are too young to manage or to even remember and enjoy the excursion. In all the schools (esp. Thiruvallur) significant number of students did not come to the excursion mainly because they were suffering from cold/fever. Various flus were sweeping through the district in that period.

What was provided? We provided snacks or breakfast in the morning and snacks or dinner evening. Proper lunch was provided in the afternoon. We paid for the buses and all the tickets. No money was ever collected from any of the children. Drinking water was also provided in the buses.

Here are the details of each excursion.

Thiruvallur Poondi Block Schools – 28 th January

The actual number of students who came for the excursion was only about 140.

Thiruvallur Poondi Block Schools – 5th February

We planned for more children but the numbers once again dropped to about 165 children. This time we took the children to Vandalur zoo in the morning. They had lunch there itself and then they went to Mahabalipuram. This time they got to see Mahabalipuram properly and saw the 5 Rathas, the Arjuna’s Penance and the Shore Temple. They also got to spend time at the beach.

Here too the number of children dropped to about 165. The children enjoyed Vandalur zoo and Mahabalipuram. The 3 buses went to the different schools and picked up the children from 6:30 am to 7:30 am and reached Vandalur zoo around 9:15 am. There they were given their morning snacks and then a group photo was taken. In the evening the children were given their evening snacks and boarded the buses. The buses left Mahabalipuram around 6:30 pm and reached the various villages between 8:30 and 9:30 pm. The snacks comprised of a packet of biscuits and a tetrapack juice.

Thiruvallur Ellapuram Block Schools – 19 th February

In these schools the final tally of children was about 150. Here too the children went to Vandalur Zoo and Mahabalipuram. The HMs at these schools had arranged for breakfast for the children at their own expense. The children got the biscuit and juice that Asha organized as well as the breakfast organized by the HMs. The play area at Vandalur zoo is always as big an attraction for the children as any of the animals.

Here we took children from just 3 schools in 2 buses for the excursion.

This was the last excursion organized at Thiruvallur. Here too the actual number of children was 115. The children were once again taken to Vandalur zoo and Mahabalipuram.

Thiruvannamalai Kilpennathur Block Schools – 18 th February

At our Thulasi project, we organized 1 excursion for children from 7 of the schools. Here is the list.

Here too the actual number of children that actually came for the excursion was 186. The children came in 3 buses. The excursion was organized for Vedanthangal and Mahabalipuram. Thoothukudi/Thirunelveli Schools – 25 th February

We took children from 4 schools to Kanniyakumari in 2 buses.

All the children had a nice visit of Kanniyakumari. They left very early from their villages to see sunrise at Kanniyakumari. Breakfast was arranged for them by Asha. They visited all the major sites in Kanniyakumari including Gandhi Mandapam, Vivekanandar Rock, Thiruvalluvar statue etc. They also stayed till sunset to see that. Lunch and dinner were also arranged by Asha for the children.

Thoothukudi/Thirunelveli Schools – 13 th March

We initially planned to have only one excursion at our Pearl project. As we couldn’t arrange an excursion at our supported schools in Chennai/Guduvanchery area, and we had funds balance, we decided to take children from 4 more schools for excursion. This time we took to see both Padmanabhapuram palace and Kanniyakumari in 2 buses.

This time they had to miss the sunrise at Kanniyakumari but instead they got to see the beautiful Travancore kingdom’s palace at Padmanabhapuram and then came to Kanniyakumari at around noon time. They were able to see the rest of the things there. Like the previous excursion, Asha arranged breakfast, lunch and dinner for the children.

In Conclusion

The excursions were greatly enjoyed by all the children. I personally attended three of the excursions organized in Thiruvallur. The children had for most part not seen any of these places. In the case of many of these places, they have read about them in their textbook or seen them on TV. Seeing these live was a great experience for them. In many schools they had the children write small essays about these places that they visited. I still meet children in 9 th or 10 th std who fondly recollect the excursion that we had taken them to some 5 years earlier.

Education is not just about the academics but also about broadening the vision of the children on what is out there. Excursions provide this in one way. It was very satisfying that through the support of Amazon we could bring this joy to so many children in so many schools across so many geographies where we work.

Santhome Church is a standing testament to the belief of the Christian followers and is among the three wonders of this world that house the tombs of Christ’s original disciple. The other two are Santiago de Compostela in Spain and St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. It was constructed in the memory of Saint Thomas who was an Apostle of Jesus Christ. Santhome Church is the greatest symbol of multi-culture and religious harmony as people from all religions visit this Church to seek solace and eternal peace. This church was built initially as a mausoleum, but it has now transversed into a Basilica owing to it’s gaining popularity and importance. Beneath the towering white embodiment of this basilica lies the body of Saint Thomas who came to India in 52 AD to preach about Christianity. He was successful in converting a large population of the locals residing in Tamil Nadu and Kerala with his wisdom and powerful preaching. He thereafter formed a community that is now known as Syrian Christians. This church also houses a museum that displays souvenirs of Saint Thomas and gives visitors an insight into the glorious past of this church during the historical times.

Iskcon Temple

Located on the East Coast Road in the Sholinganallur locality of South-Chennai, ISKCON Temple is the spiritual and cultural hub of the city. This temple in Chennai is not only the biggest Radha Krishna temple in Tamilnadu but one of the biggest ISKCON temples in India. With the history of the ISKCON temple in Chennai dating back to the late 1970s, the construction of the temple began in the late 1990s and was completed in 2012 in many phases. The temple houses the deity of Lord Krishna, alongside Radharani and their friends Lalita, Lord Chaitanya, Lord Jagannath, Baladeva, and Subhadra inside three teak-wood alters which are one of a kind. These deities are sourced from Rajasthan and Orissa. Under the guidance of Sri Bhanu Swami, the beautiful architecture is inspired by the Kalinga and Pallava kingdoms’ architecture. At the entrance of the temple, one would see the wonderful design of various Hindu universes on the marble flooring. The various universes are circled a central pillar called Mount Meru. The design is implicated from the ancient Vedic Puranas where Mount Meru is described as the centre of all the universes. The temple is a blend of various cultures with modern scientific technology. To attract more and more people in the ISKCON movement, the authorities of the temples organize lectures and audio-visual programs about the Hindu philosophy. Spread over an area of 1.5 acres, the ISKCON temple or the Hare Rama Hare Krishna temple is built on five floors.
