When deciding which trailer will be the best fit for your family, you need to first determine how much your truck can tow and how big of an area you can store it. It is also a good idea to come up with a budget. These can get expensive fast. You would hate to fall in love with one unit just to find that you can’t feasibly make the purchase.

I like the budget friendly, Jayco Jay Sport 12UD. It is the smallest travel trailer that we are going to look at today. This is a tent-style trailer meaning that it is not only lightweight, but it will also fold down small while in storage. There are 2 large beds on either end of this trailer that both folds out when set up. It is also unique in that it has two different dinettes-a standard one and a u-shaped one. Not only this, but it is also the most lightweight and can be pulled with a smaller, half-ton truck or a larger SUV. This is a base model of camper when compared to many others. Due to this, I found the price to be quite a bit lower than other trailers. However, this can make the areas squishier when housing 4 or more occupants. You may also want to consider a campsite with sewer hookups if you are wanting an extended stay. This Keystone camper has a layout different from any other travel trailer. The master bed comes in a king size giving you plenty of room to stretch out at night. While there is a slide-out, it doesn’t pop out of the side but out of the back. This is where the large bed is. What this means, is that the camper is smaller in length when in storage but still has all solid walls, unlike a tent trailer or hybrid trailer. There is a bunk room with 3 additional beds in a separate room at the back. This room is handy in that it contains its own wardrobe area.

Even though your truck may have the weight rating for this camper, it may not have the hitch rating. Check you user’s manual beforehand to ensure you aren’t at risk of damage or an accident if you haul this unit. Also, having no bathtub can be inconvenient for families with especially young children who need to get washed up.

Forest River offers a premium bunkhouse camper for large families. The three massive slide outs add tons of extra live-in space. This first slide bumps out the u-shaped dinette and couch. Both of these fold down into additional beds. The second and third slides are both located at the back of the trailer in the bunkhouse. These bump out 2 separate sets of bunk beds for a total of 4 more beds. There is also an option to switch one of these beds out for another couch. The ground space left behind as a result of these slides leads to a large entertainment center complete with extra storage and a television.

On top of this, there is also a master bedroom located at the front of the trailer. This additional room contains a queen-sized bed.

The length of this unit can make it especially hard for some families. While it does offer a lot of live-in space, parking, towing and storing can all be difficult.

Dutchmen has one of the widest ranges of travel trailers meant for larger groups. While they do have a few smaller models, the majority of them sleep at least 6 people with the larger models allowing up to 10. The Dutchmen Aspen Trail 3680 FLDS can sleep up to 10 people comfortably. The queen-sized master bedroom is located at the back of the camper. This is a spacious room as the head of the bed is a slide-out. This room is equipped for a second ac unit should you desire to have one.

There are two entrances. A large awning has the advantage of covering both of these doors to ensure optimal coverage. The back one leads either into the bathroom or this bedroom. The front entrance boasts a sliding, glass patio style door. This leads to the main part of the camper. There is a fold-down couch as well as a table. These are both located on the second slide out. At the very front of the camper is another L-shaped couch located in front of a 110-volt electric fireplace. This folds down into an even larger bed then the queen-sized one.This camper is unique in that it comes set up for two different types of rear cameras. The first one is used for backing up the unit while the other one is to monitor the traffic behind you. When considering this unit, make sure to note the size of it. Depending on where you plan to camp, there may be areas or campsites that you will not fit. You will also need to think about the best place to store something as large as this. There is only one light switch inside the main door and that is all. Every light is located on the ceiling and must be turned on by pushing a button in the middle of it. This can be problematic for either young children or for those who are shorter in size.

Keystone Hideout 38 FQTS can accommodate up to 8 people. This unit is unique in that it has 2 master bedroom areas. These both contain a queen-sized bed. In the rear one, the headboard slides out for extra floor space. With the room at the front of the trailer, the closet slides out for additional storage space.

This unit also has a third slide which takes out the table and sofa. While both of these can fold down into beds, there is also an option to switch out the table for a free-standing one. However, if you take this option, you should be aware that the table will no longer act as a bed. On the other hand, you can move this table around. This feature can come in handy for a place to sit down and eat outdoors instead of inside.Easy cleaning is essential when traveling with a large group. For that reason, Keystone has added in a central vac system as well as a hidden laundry chute to their new campers. The ladder on the back gives easy access to the walk-on roof for any repair work needing to be done or to simply fetch that frisby that has gone astray. There are also locations ready for solar panel hookups for the freedom to trickle charge your batteries all day long. The hitch weight on this trailer is quite a bit higher than any of the others covered. At 1200 lbs., many trucks will not be able to handle this unit even though they may have the towing capacity for the overall weight. Your best option is to not use anything smaller than a one-ton truck. If you happen to have a diesel engine, even better. Attempting to tow this with anything not rated for the hitch weight will greatly increase your risk of either damage to the truck or an accident.

While these all sleep 6 people or more, they come in a ton of different layouts, price ranges, and sizes. You have to decide how much you would like to spend as well as your primary usage. If you are wanting more pro-longed stays, you may find a larger model with more features more comfortable. On the other hand, if you don’t have a large space to store the unit, don’t have a vehicle with a high towing capacity, or if you are simply intending on camping in more cramped areas, you will certainly benefit from a smaller model. We love this model for its enormous bunk room in the back of the trailer. The opposing slides in this room really open things up and give the kids plenty of floor space to use during playtime.

The bunk room comes with 2 top bunks, a twin bed, and a trundle bed under the twin. If needed, it would be possible to add more sleeping space to this room. That said, the couch and table both fold down to make additional sleeping spaces in the living area.

We love that this trailer also has two full bathrooms, including one with a small bath tub for bathing the littlest travelers. We also adore the large closet in the master bedroom and the fact that it has prep for a washer and dryer , something that every parent will appreciate.

Lastly, we think the outdoor kitchen is a fabulous addition, as it makes cooking for your crew a much less crowded experience.

The bunk room on this 40-foot trailer can sleep a total of 6 kids and features a huge storage space for containing all of the toys and clothes that come along with those little ones. This room also has a half bath attached for those late-night potty breaks.

Moving into the living area, we highly recommend forgoing the table and chairs—which will be too small for a large family anyway—and getting the super sofa. This huge sofa will seat at least four adults and folds out into a bed for even more sleeping spaces.

In the master bedroom, there is prep for a washer and dryer, along with another large closet. On top of that, you have the option of having a king bed in this room, something that co-sleeping parents will surely love.

The bunkroom in this model is different than others we’ve seen and we love it. The kids have a bedroom in the rear where the slide actually goes out the back and there’s a half bath so you don’t have to share! For additional sleeping there is a loft above with access from the living area.

In the living area you have plenty of space to get cozy. Sit in the comfortable theater seating area and enjoy the fireplace or spend some time at the table. As an added bonus, the fridge is residential so you won’t have a problem with food for your large family.

Ideal Family-Friendly Lightweight Bumper Pull

Want a pull-behind trailer but need something lighter than the fifth wheels listed above? The bumper pull travel trailer might be your best bet. While these trailers do tend to be a bit smaller than their fifth wheel counterparts, there are enough options out there that you will likely find something that works for you.

Best Class C RV for Large Family

What about the best class C RV for large family units? To be honest, class C rigs don’t offer a lot in the way of variety. That said, a traditional class C bunkhouse can accommodate quite a few people in terms of sleeping space. If that won’t work for you and you’re set on a class C, we recommend bumping up to a super C.

We love this super C in particular for a myriad of reasons. Once again, we see a bunk room with plenty of floor space for playing. The cab-over bunk is nice and roomy, and there is both a loveseat and a couch, meaning you’ll have plenty of seating for everyone.

In the master bedroom, you’ll find a king size bed and washer and dryer prep. Lastly, this RV features tons of storage space and an enormous cargo carrying capacity.

The Perfect Class A RV for a Family

Finally, there is the class A RV. When it comes to motorhomes, the class A is the cream of the crop. It also tends to be the best option when looking for the best RV for full-time family living and a motorhome is your preference.

Class A motorhomes tend to be larger than class C RVs. On top of that, the fact that they tend to offer more storage and better cargo carrying capacity means you’ll have a much easier time carrying the stuff you need for a large family RV adventure.

However, it all depends on what you’re looking for. 

If you have multiple young children accompanying you on your camping adventures, you may want to keep an eye on travel trailers that have bunkhouse floor plans . This allows you multiple bunk beds in a single floor plan, giving you plenty of space for everyone to sleep. 

However, if you are traveling with older children or people who want their own bedroom or dedicated sleeping area, you may want to keep an eye on floor plans that offer you this. You can find floor plans with multiple double or queen-size beds within, but it may take a little bit of extra searching. 

If you aren’t particularly worried about everyone having a dedicated bed throughout the day, you can definitely find a travel trailer with sleeper sofas, convertible dining areas, and other unique bed positions. Just make sure the entire family is comfortable with this decision before making your final purchase! 

Layout and Floor Plan

Speaking of sleeping arrangements, the layout or floor plan of your family travel trailer will make or break your camping experience. While it is difficult to know what type of floor plan you need, especially if you aren’t used to living in an RV, it’s imperative to make a list of things you are hoping for in an RV layout.

Going along with what type of layout works best for you, you should pay close attention to the bathrooms on board your travel trailer made for families. This is because the living area inside of a bathroom is typically fairly compact or lackluster compared to other areas of a travel trailer. 

If you know that you will need your RV bathroom in busy situations, such as when the entire family needs to get ready at the same time, you may want to prioritize the space in this room in particular.

Many travel trailers can be equipped with boondocking features, but they don’t often come standard. It also depends on the size of the travel trailer that you are shopping for, as the larger the RV, the more difficult it is to boondock in.

This isn’t to say that you can’t boondock in an RV that is built for families, but some travel trailers have too many utilities to power by solar or batteries. However, some boondocking features that you should keep in mind include: 

• Multiple batteries that are built especially for boondocking 
• Solar panels dependent on your utility usage 
• Larger holding tanks for your gray and black water tanks

Length and Weight of Trailer

Something you should consider before many other travel trailer features is just how long of a travel trailer you need. In addition to the length, you should always consider the weight limit of your tow vehicle so that you know just how heavy a trailer you are going to be able to tow. 

For example, it’s definitely possible to find a family-friendly travel trailer that’s under 8000 pounds , but finding something that’s under 5,000 pounds may be a bit more difficult. When it comes to the weights and measures of the Puma, this trailer ranges in length, from 29 feet to just shy of 39 feet. This RV is designed to be towed by the majority of all half-ton trucks or vehicles, but make sure to check out the weight on this one to make sure it works well for you and your family.

Given just how many floor plans there are, you may feel overwhelmed about what decision is right for you at first. You can get the Puma with two bathrooms, with a spacious living area, multiple bunkhouse options, and more. Many options have chef kitchens as well as outdoor kitchens, for those of you who love to cook.

You can get the Puma pre-wired for solar, included standard. There’s also the option to add an additional AC unit , ducted heating, and more. In terms of the standard features on this RV, there aren’t too many that are special or out of the ordinary, but you’ll definitely have everything you need in order to hit the road.

The price point on the Puma is fair to a variety of budgets, and the interior design is cozy and easy to clean. Depending on the floor plan, you’re likely to find something with plenty of storage, places for everyone to relax, and even living space to come together and enjoy game night as a family!

The interior design could be a bit more interesting throughout the rig, but the living area and kitchen, in particular, look great, especially at this price. Definitely check out the Puma, at the very least to take advantage of their many floor plans!

Best on a Budget: Jayco Jay Feather

• Interior design works well for families 
• More affordable options out there other than this one

Starting at $43k, the Jay Feather by Jayco may not be the most budget-friendly travel trailer out there. However, it is going to give you the most bang for your buck, especially when you consider that there are 9 distinct floor plans across a variety of lengths and weights. Let’s check it out now!

One of the first things that many people notice about Jayco travel trailers is the fact that they have a unique and lovely interior design. In fact, Jayco crafts the majority of their cabinetry and furniture in house, creating a warm and welcoming space that is unique to this particular RV brand and manufacturer.

When it comes to finding a floor plan that works well for your family, the Jay Feather offers you multiple different bunkhouse floor plan options, including double bunk beds stacked on top of each other. You can also find floor plans with a bunkhouse bedroom, complete with a sofa and entertainment system for the kiddos. 

The interior kitchen areas of this travel trailer are spacious and welcoming, but if there isn’t enough space to cook indoors on this rig, many floor plans come equipped with an outdoor kitchen as well. You also have customizable living spaces, giving you the option to add theater seating or convertible couches for more sleeping space.

In terms of amenities in special features, there isn’t too much included at this standard purchase price. However, you have the option to upgrade your electric panel to a 50 amp service rather than a 30 amp service, as well as prep for an additional air conditioning unit should you need one. 

Jayco also offers a few different solar panel options for you to add on to the initial purchase price, should you be interested in boondocking or having renewable energy on board your RV. It may not be something that feels necessary to you at this point in time, but Jayco likes to give its customers the option! 

Again, this particular budget-friendly travel trailer isn’t the cheapest option out there in the world today. However, it has everything you need and multiple floor plans to choose from, a fair price point, and many different unique features included in this price. There are always less-expensive options out there, but this is a fantastic and reliable one from Jayco!  

Lightest Weight: Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite

• Everything under 6500 pounds
• Multiple lengths and floor plans
• Plenty of storage throughout, especially in bedrooms
• Fairly basic interior design 

When I first began my RVing journey living full-time in my travel trailer, I was always stressed about how much my RV weighed. If you are also nervous about towing something too heavy for your tow vehicle, check out the Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite. All of the floor plans for this particular RV are under 6500 pounds . Let’s talk about them in more detail now! 

Ranging in length from 25 ft to 35 ft, the Apex is ideal for those of you helping to bring along the entire family. There are a number of floor plans with multiple bunk beds, including ones with double bunk bed sizes for the older kiddos in your life. What else is special about this floor plan? Let’s take a closer look.

One of the main things you will notice about the Apex floor plans is the fact that there is storage everywhere. There are walk around queen size beds for adults, complete with under-bed storage. There’s plenty of space in the galley kitchen as well as huge exterior storage compartments. 

You can get a floor plan that has two separate living areas, one for the adults and one for the kids. You can also get Theater seating, a larger refrigerator upgrade, and floor plans that give you spacious bathrooms so that more than one person at a time can get ready in the morning. 

You can choose from a few different interior design options on this particular travel trailer, though the design is fairly simplistic overall. However, it is easy to clean and maintain, especially if you plan on bringing a few too many kids along on your camping adventures! 

You even get a small amount of solar panel power included standard on this particular RV!

For the price, the Apex is a great choice for those of you worried about towing something too heavy for your vehicle. Just bring your own interior design features so that you can get it looking the way you want, but this is a great choice for a number of people just starting off with a travel trailer. 

Most Spacious: Dutchmen Astoria

If you want something a bit more luxurious and spacious, you should definitely check out the Dutchmen Astoria. Starting at $56k, the Astoria is a bit pricey compared to other options on this list. However, it has a lot to offer, especially when it comes to everyone having their own space. Let’s check it out!

While there are only five floor plans to check out on this particular travel trailer, each one is fantastic for families of all sizes. One floor plan only sleeps two to four people, but there are multiple that sleep 5 to 6, and even some floor plans that sleep 8 to 10 in case you have a large group that you want to bring along with you.

You can get the Astoria in multiple lengths, from 26 feet to 36 feet, and it remains easy to drive and tow. Plus, you have a heated and enclosed underbelly on board this rig, which means you can camp in it year-round if that is something you are interested in doing. 

Stepping on board the Astoria, you will notice that the interior design is light and modern. You can choose from a few different fabrics and countertop materials, though everything is contemporary and easy to clean. There’s a bit more personality in this travel trailer compared to other options on this list so far, so this is definitely a plus. 

There are walk around King beds on multiple floor plans, bunk bedrooms, beautiful kitchen and living areas, and much more. You can get electric fireplaces on certain floor plans as well as Theater seating, and everyone should feel as if they have their own space to relax and unwind.

At this particular price point, you may be expecting multiple features to be included in the initial purchase price. However, the features on this RV are fairly standard, with the option to add a 50 amp service and an additional air conditioning unit, not included in the initial price. 

While you might be expecting a few more options, the Astoria is priced fairly high for what you get. However, there’s plenty of space for everyone, and it is furnished beautifully! 

Best with Two Bathrooms: KZ RV Connect

• Half bath and full bath floor plan option 
• Sleeps up to 9 people onboard this RV 
• Beautiful interior design is easy to maintain 
• No boondocking features included standard

What Travel Trailers to Avoid for Full-Time Living and Why

Here are the campers to avoid for live in full-time.

Alpha Wolf Floor plans are not recommended for full-time living but are great for traveling.

Although the Cherokee Alpha Wolf line offers excellent value for the price, they are spacious, well-finished, and often our recommended floor plans. In this case, we believe they are not the Forest River floor plans we would recommend for families with children who choose to live full-time in a travel trailer. 

Certain features are recommended for full-time living in a travel trailer; an entertainment center in the bunkhouse is essential and gives parents significant advantages in separating activities and privacy. Also, we mentioned earlier how important it is for the booth dinette to provide the right size for the number of people in the RV.

For example, the 2023 Cherokee Alpha Wolf 30RDB-L has two bunk beds in a bunk room. However, no entertainment center is located inside the bunk room. The Alpha Wolf 30DBH-L has the same issue. So, you will need to jump to the floor plan of Alpha Wolf 33BH-L, which includes the entertainment center appreciated when living full-time in a travel trailer with kids. However, in this model, the dinette is short-sized for only four people.

Don’t get me wrong. Alpha Wolf travel trailers are great for vacation. They are a good choice in other circumstances but not recommended for full-time living.

According to owners, Winnebago Travel Trailers are not recommended for full-time living.

It is expensive, common, and without any of the features necessary for comfortable RV living. Many RVers may have decided on this camper to establish their full-time lifestyle. But if you have the budget, go for other models and floor plans that offer what will be a priority for camper living.

Airstream Travel Trailers: Lack of Comfort for Families

Users after RV renting manifest Airstream Travel Trailers are too expensive without any comfort for a family. You pay for excellent design (if you like something super retro) and the publicity Airstream spends to appear in Hollywood in every movie they can. But you don’t pay for comfort, versatility, and high quality of life. It makes sense because they are not designed for full-time living.

We recently had our chance to rent an Airstream Classic 33FB for a week, a very long 33+ feet and a heavy 10,000 pounds.  Even for a couple like us, with no grandchildren to accompany us on this occasion, both of us working sporadically on our laptops, the cramped interior was tedious. It is impossible to prepare anything other than a simple meal because the lack of space is appalling. The absence of slides-out worsens the circulation, and we are lucky to be slim. Otherwise, using the shower or even sharing the circulation in a corridor is complicated.

How expensive? For 2023, the Airstream Classic 33FB has a starting price of $206,500, and the International 30RB is $137,400, Flying Cloud® 30FB Bunk, suitable for a family with kids, has a starting price of $124,500.

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Washoe County Regional Animal Services says they have acquired two new trailers designed to evacuate animals.

The state-of-the-art self-contained trailers were made possible thanks to grant funding from the Department of Homeland Security.

The trailers are equipped with built-in dog and cat kennels, as well as essential supplies that will be fully self-contained to enable WCRAS to care for evacuated animals in a variety of settings.

WRCAS says the trailers will enable quicker deployment and set up emergencies.
