It’s family-friendly, and there are lots of other activities such as hay bale jumping, pumpkin patches, and freshly made cider donuts to eat.

Not to be outdone, though, the Royal Oak Farm Orchard has their own maze (with a twist) to the south, just over the border in Harvard, IL.

There, they have Amaze N’ Apples, America’s first Apple Tree Maze! Over 2,500 apple trees with 9 different kinds of apples, all arranged into a labyrinth to entertain young and old alike.

33. Take a day trip to Chicago or Fontana

From great landmarks like the Bean to sporting activities, rooftop bars, and historic architecture, a day trip to Chicago is one of the best Lake Geneva activities for adults.

If Chicago seems a little far, heading to the other side of Lake Geneva to the village of Fontana is another great day trip idea.

Fun Things to Do in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin’s Scenic Retreat

Long the summer playground for Chicago’s rich, the opulent over-the-top mansions they built along the lakeshore gave Lake Geneva Wisconsin the nickname “Newport of the Midwest.” Today, this southern Wisconsin town is still the playground of the wealthy — it’s the kind of place where the mega-rich buy $10 million mansions on the lake and tear them down so they can build a $20 million mansion on that lakefront spot.

But it’s also a charming small town with beautiful resorts, 21 miles of lovely lakefront and a wealth of fabulous restaurants. Even better, there are plenty of fun things to do in Lake Geneva, whether you’re visiting on a day trip from Chicago or spending a long, lazy week at the lake.

From high-end boutique shopping in the quaint downtown to a Las Vegas-style magic show, a drive-through safari and cruising the lake with a “mail jumper” who delivers mail to the piers in front of those opulent mansions, here are our favorite things to do in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

1. Take a US Mailboat Tour

Hands down, this was my favorite thing to do in Lake Geneva. Yes, it’s a boat tour of the lake . But it’s more than just a boat tour; it is the BEST boat tour of the lake. That’s because it features the mail jumpers.

Lake Geneva is one of the few places in the US where lakefront homeowners can opt to have their mail delivered by boat rather than the standard mail carrier.

Known as “mail jumpers,” these are the teens and young adults who win the coveted summer job that sees them, literally, jumping off the boat onto the docks to deliver a local newspaper and other pieces of mail to a smattering of homeowners along the lake.

Once the mail is safely tucked into the mailbox — or, charmingly, placed in the eager mouth of a waiting golden retriever — the mail jumper then has to jump back onto the boat. To ratchet up the challenge, the mail jumper — it was Paige on our trip — sometimes has to run all the way down the pier, across a lawn and back along a neighboring dock to jump back onto the still-moving boat.

Her heroics drew regular rounds of applause from our boatful of appreciative tourists.

SheBuysTravel Tip: If you plan to fly to Lake Geneva, you’ll need to rent a car. The closest airports are O’Hare International in Chicago and Milwaukee’s Mitchell International Airport. Seeing the sights of Lake Geneva requires transportation; Ubers are not plentiful here.

2. Cruise the Lake

While the mailboat tour is the most fun thanks to the mail jumper, there are many historic boats operated by the Lake Geneva Cruise Line that cruise Geneva Lake from April through November. Cruises range from 1 -2 hours with lots of options. In addition to the mailboat tour, there are dinner cruises, cocktail cruises, ice cream social cruises and plain old cruises. All include commentary about the area’s history, the lake’s wealthiest occupants and its most opulent mansions.

Those historic mansions around the lakefront were once summer homes to Chicago’s wealthiest families, including the Wrigleys (of chewing gum and Chicago Cubs baseball fame) and the Hyatt Hotels’ Pritzkers. (Illinois Gov. Jay Pritzker still has a house on the lake.) Many were built between 1870 and 1920 and remain elegant reminders of a bygone era.

SheBuysTravel Tip : The tours travel counter-clockwise around the lake, so sit on the starboard (right-hand) side of the boat for the best views of the mansions along the lakefront.

3. Stroll Along the Geneva Lake Shore Path

The Geneva Lake Shore Path runs alongside the lake and through the front yard of every one of the mansions that line the lake. In some spots, it feels like a nature walk with trees all around and the lake lapping at the shore. In other spots, it’s a beautifully manicured path that offers an up-close look at the mansion at the top of the hill.

Stop at the Lake Geneva Visitor Center to pick up a map that shows the few spots where you can park a car to take a walk. And note that there are very few places to get a drink of water or take a potty break. So go before you go and bring your own water bottle.

While you can walk the entire path, it would take the full day. Pick an entry spot where you can park, then walk for an hour or so before turning around and walking back to your car.

4. Geek Out at the Yerkes Observatory

You don’t have to be a space geek to visit here. It’s a don’t-miss thing to do in Lake Geneva for history geeks, architecture geeks and just about anyone who has ever looked up at the night sky and wondered what’s out there. There’s even something here for garden geeks since the grounds were landscaped by the venerable Frederick Law Olmsted, designer of many famous green spaces, including Central Park in New York City.

The observatory, located in nearby Williams Bay, is home to the world’s largest refractory telescope — it’s 63 feet long and weighs 20 tons. Even better, the place is staffed by people who share an infectious enthusiasm for the cosmos, history and architecture.

The observatory was built in the 1890s by University of Chicago astrophysicist George Ellery Hale using money supplied by railroad tycoon Charles Tyson Yerkes. For more than a century, the observatory and its massive telescope were the epicenter of space discovery. It drew the best and brightest in the business, from Albert Einstein to Carl Sagan.

You can only visit by taking a tour led by one of the observatory’s enthusiastic and entertaining guides. They will keep you spellbound with tales of the history, highlight architectural features designed to make fun of the founders and funders or lead you on an invigorating hike through the 50 acres of grounds.

5. Be Mesmerized at the Tristan Crist Magic Theatre

Like a good Vegas magic show, the Tristan Crist Magic Show is filled with flashing lights, pounding rock and roll music and tricks that make you ask, “How did he do that???” Unlike a huge Las Vegas show, the Tristan Crist show happens in a small, intimate space where it’s possible to keep a close eye on how he does what he does — and still not be able to see the sleight of hand.

You’ll see the usuals — he cuts a woman in two — and some tricks I’ve never seen before, such as when he makes a helicopter appear and, later, a Harley Davidson motorcycle disappear.

Expect the magician to ask for volunteers to help with some of the magic. When my friend ended up on stage helping with a trick, the look of surprise on her face was the best trick of all.

6. Feed a Nilgai at Safari Lake Geneva

The brainchild of “Jungle” Jay Christie, this drive-through zoo is the place where the humans are in the cage (their cars) and the animals roam free.

The place is a refuge for wild animals, some of which are nearly extinct in the wild. They are free to roam the grounds wherever they wish. Visitors are restricted to their cars and a designated gravel and dirt road.

It is exhilarating to see these creatures walk right up to your car. Animals in residence range from the easily recognizable giraffes, camels and zebras to the less well-known eland (the world’s largest and slowest antelope), zebu (a Sri Lankan cow) and nilgai (an Asian antelope).

What NOT to Do When Feeding the Animals

When you arrive, you can buy buckets of food for $5 a pop. Then, roll down your car windows and hold out the bucket for the animals. That’s how I learned that the animals are much more adept at this feeding process than I was.

The first time, I held the bucket out the window and the nilgai immediately knocked it out of my hand and onto the ground where he and his pals snarfed it all down. On my next stop, I held the bucket tighter and only put it halfway out the window, resting it on my car door. The alpaca dove into the bucket, spraying food all over me and my car, much like someone who does a belly flop into a pool and drenches everyone nearby.

So much for feeding the animals! That meant that the rest of my meander through the park could be spent studying the animals, many of which studied me right back through the car windows.

This is one of the must-see things to do in Lake Geneva, especially if you’re visiting with kids. Once you’re inside, you can drive the circuit as many times as you like. Most people spend about 90 minutes in the park.

SheBuysTravel Tip : Entrance is by reservation only . And since this is a popular spot, the park recommends making a reservation at least two weeks before you plan to visit, especially if you want to visit on a summer weekend.

7. Rent a Kayak or SUP

Partaking in the water sports offered on Geneva Lake is another way to get a little exercise along with your close-up look at how the 1 percent lives. Even on a chilly early fall day, I enjoyed paddling around the docks, looking at the beautiful wooden boats that matched the beautifully landscaped mansions and marveling at how warm and clear the waters of the lake were.

8. Shop in Downtown Lake Geneva

Outdoor activities don’t have to require exertion!

On summer days, this vibrant downtown will be crowded with people window shopping along Main Street, eating ice cream or munching on fudge as they stroll along. There are benches to rest and people watch and plenty of boutiques for buying souvenirs and resort wear.

9. Pick (or Buy) Apples at Royal Oak Farm Apple Orchard

Open seasonally from mid-August through November, this charming spot is about 20 minutes south of Lake Geneva, just over the state line in Harvard, IL.

The 160-acre family-owned orchard has 20,000 apple trees growing more than 30 varieties of apples. It also grows pumpkins, gourds and squash. You can pick your own or do what I did: stop in the store and buy the apples someone else picked.

If you bring kids, expect to stay awhile. There’s a cute play area, a train to ride and baby animals to pet in the petting zoo. If I had the time, I would have stayed for lunch at the onsite restaurant and had a piece of homemade apple pie for dessert.

Royal Oak also is home to the country’s only apple tree maze, Amaze ‘N Apples, in the fall.

10. Take a Hike at Big Foot Beach State Park

Named for Big Foot, a Potawatomi leader whose tribe was forced to leave the area in 1836, this 271-acre park sits on the shore of Geneva Lake. There are 6.5 miles of hiking trails, campsites for tents and RVs, a swimming beach and picnic and playground areas. A year-round park, this is the place for snowshoeing in the winter.

SheBuysTravel Tip : If you plan to fish at Ceylon Lagoon, the park will loan you fishing equipment for free, but everyone over the age of 16 needs a fishing license .

11. Visit the Geneva Lake Museum

I didn’t have time to visit, but my friend Randy Mink, who went to the Geneva Lake Museum , said he was pleasantly surprised by it. He visited after taking the mailboat tour and seeing the historic mansions.

The museum showcases furniture and stained glass windows from some of the opulent estates. He especially enjoyed the exhibits on the mailboat, the former Playboy Club hotel and Lake Geneva’s ties to gangsters in the 1920s and 30s.

12. Hop on an E-Bike

You can rent bikes to explore on your own or take a guided bike tour from Avant Cycle . Lake Geneva is home to six officially designated Wisconsin State Rustic Roads. Or you can ride around Geneva Lake on the winding, woodsy roads exploring the natural beauty of the area.

13. Play a Round of Golf

Golf is hot in Lake Geneva, which boasts eight golf courses :

Grand Geneva Resort and Spa has two 18-hole courses — The Brute , a par 72 course that is considered one of the best in Wisconsin, and The Highlands , which was designed by Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye and then updated in 1996 by Bob Cupp and again in 2006 by Bob Lohmann.

Lake Lawn Resort’s Majestic Oaks Golf Course is known for its deep sand bunkers and subtle undulations.

Geneva National Resort boasts 54 holes of award-winning golf designed by golf legends Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Lee Trevino.

Hawk’s View Golf Club has Como Crossings , the only 5-star rated course in Lake Geneva, Como Crossings, and the only family-friendly, Top 10 Nationally rated Par 3 course, Barn Hollow.

Abbey Springs Golf Course in nearby Fontana is on the south shore of Geneva Lake.

Evergreen Golf Club in nearby Elkhorn is a public course and the most affordable place to golf in the area. It was voted the best public golf course in Walworth County WI.

14. Cruise to the Victorian Summer Retreat of a Chicago Beer Baron

Chicago Beer Baron Conrad Seipp built Black Point Estate  in 1888 as a summer retreat with enchanting gardens and exquisite views of the lake.

Guided tours begin with a 45-minute cruise out to this elegant estate, the same way the Seipp family would arrive. Then you’ll get a chance to see the first two floors of the mansion featuring 20 rooms. Admire the Queen Anne design, Victorian furniture and designer touches from subsequent generations. Take in the cool breezes off the lake on the veranda and feel what it’s like to be among the rich and famous.

15. Zip Through the Trees

Your whole family will enjoy the challenge.

16. Soar in a Hot Air Balloon

Another way to enjoy the lake is from above on a hot air balloon ride. Go up, up and away as you gently glide over Geneva Lake with the Lake Geneva Balloon Company .

There’s nothing quite like a ride in a hot air balloon!

17. Ride the East Troy Electric Railroad

This electric train is operated from the East Troy Train Museum, about 16 miles north of Lake Geneva. The 10-mile ride aboard the East Troy Electric Railroad  takes you through the fields, orchards and rural farms of Southeast Wisconsin. 

The treat at the end of the line: It’s an easy walk to The Elegant Farmer . As locals know, the apple pie here is baked in a paper bag and just might be the best apple pie you will ever put in your mouth.

The bakers discovered this baking technique quite by accident, but it works. The pie comes out crisper and more luscious. People (including me!) drive for hours to buy one of these pies!

There will be variations — apple-rhubard, apple-peach, apple-blueberry, etc. But stick with the original. Or, if you simply must have a specialty pie, buy two — one specialty and one original. Your tastebuds will thank me, even if your waistline doesn’t.

18. Browse the Farmer’s Market

You can’t beat a farmer’s market in the center of America’s farmland. The options include the standard veggies, but also feature apples from surrounding orchards, flowers from local growers and, because it’s Wisconsin, local cheeses.

There also are an array of unique, handmade arts and crafts for sale, along with live entertainment and ready-to-eat food and drink. The market is open from 1 am-1 pm on Thursdays from May – October.

19. Taste the Beer and Wines

Wisconsin is well known for its cheese and its beer. So no visit to the state is complete without sampling some of the local beers and wines.

A few recommendations:

Topsy Turvy Brewery : Besides its fun name, this brewery is located inside a beautiful historic church in downtown Lake Geneva.

Geneva Tap House : This downtown Lake Geneva brewery offers, literally, a wallful of beer! There are 50 self-service taps lined up on the wall dispensing beers, seltzers and wines. Sample to your heart’s delight. The Tap House also serves snacks and sandwiches.

Studio Winery: A winery and distillery together, this is the place to find Geneva Lakes Distilling. Sample wines and spirits and enjoy light bites while listening to live music.

Things to Do in Lake Geneva in the Winter

While Lake Geneva is best known as a summer destination, there is year-round to be had, with both indoor and outdoor activities.

That’s right. The temperatures may drop below zero, but that is no reason for a hearty Midwesterner to stay indoors! Instead, they strap on snowshoes, put cleats on their hiking boots and head out for winter fun. (I say “they” because, although I am a born and bred Midwesterner, that winter-loving gene skipped me. I head south to Florida or South Padre Island TX to wait for spring.)

Here are the ways to celebrate winter in Lake Geneva, if you’re into winter:

Snowshoeing, Cross Country Skiing and Winter Hiking

Rent snowshoes or skis at Clear Water Outdoor and head out to explore Big Foot Beach State Park. Or just strap a set of cleats to your hiking boots and hit the Lake Shore Path for an entirely different view of the lake and the historic mansions decked out in their holiday finest.

If you prefer groomed trails, the Grand Geneva and Lake Lawn resorts have tailored trails and rent cross-country skis.

Downhill Skiing, Snowboarding, Sledding and Tubing

Skiing in the flatlands of the upper Midwest? You bet. There’s a snow hill at the Grand Geneva Resort and another about a half-hour away at Wilmot Mountain.

Ice Fishing

In the Lake Geneva area, Geneva Lake, Lake Como and Delavan Lake are all beacons for ice fishermen. But really, any lake in the upper Midwest that freezes in the winter will suddenly be populated with little huts all over the ice. That’s those winter-loving Midwesterners out there, hovering over a hole cut in the ice and waiting for a fish to bite. Or perhaps they’re just drinking beer. It depends on who you ask.

Ice Skating

Several of the Lake Geneva resorts set up skating rinks each winter, complete with skate rentals, including the Abbey, Lake Lawn and Grand Geneva. Or bring your own skates to the Williams Bay Ice Rink at Edgewater Park.

Ice Castles at Geneva National Resort

One of only five  Ice Castles in the United States, this outdoor adventure features an illuminated ice kingdom with frozen slides, crawl spaces, a cave and fountains built into a frozen outdoor landscape.

If you happen to visit at the end of January, you’ll be able to watch state championship teams of snow sculptors competing in the only national snow sculpting championship in the United States. The sculptors work at Riviera Plaza and Flat Iron Park on the shore of Geneva Lake. Their works will be on display until they melt.

Best Time to Visit Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin is a year round destination although many activities are seasonal. The temperature varies greatly from warm summers to cold and snowy winters. You can find the average weather here .

Summer is the busiest season for visitors and tourists and offers warm-weather activities like boating and swimming in the lake.

Winter offers cold winter activities like skiing, snowboarding and popular winter events including Winterfest and Winter Realms.

Personally, my favorite season to visit Lake Geneva is the fall when the temperatures are more moderate and you can enjoy the beautiful fall colors with fewer crowds.

Getting to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Lake Geneva is located about 49 miles from Milwaukee, 74 miles from Madison and 83 miles from Chicago.

While close enough for a day trip from Chicago or Milwaukee, I recommend staying at least 2 or 3 days. In fact Lake Geneva has been a popular weekend getaway from Chicago for decades.

If you haven’t been to Lake Geneva before you are in for a treat. It’s a charming city in Walworth County, Wisconsin . It’s a short drive from Milwaukee and makes a perfect Wisconsin getaway location.  

In time gone past it was the place where the wealthy in the area vacationed and many of their mansions and the resorts built to serve them still exist today.

 In the summer and during fall in Wisconsin, this place really is stunning.

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin is a beautiful area with some stunning beaches, lots of really cool Wisconsin state parks , and natural beauty.

It’s also a place that offers many attractions, activities, and adventures. This cool small town in WI has much more to offer than you might first imagine. 

It’s the perfect place for all ages and there will have something here to suit everyone.

Whether you want to connect with nature, shop till you drop, entertain children or have a romantic weekend getaway Lake Geneva does it all in style.

Get Historic At The Geneva Lake Museum

If you like knowing the history of the places you visit then this Lake Geneva downtown attraction is for you.

The museum has artifacts, buildings, and relics that take you through the history of this area, some dating from the 1800s.   

Situated in the Lake Geneva downtown area, it is inside the old Wisconsin Power and Light building which was built in 1929.

It’s located on a site with 2.5 acres of land and has a huge amount of buildings that have been carefully restored. 

There are lots to see here including old car models, train models, ice cutting, and horseshoeing tools. It even has a replica old fire station, a dental workstation, and a classroom.  

There will be something at this museum to keep everyone happy. If you are wondering what to do in Lake Geneva you can’t go wrong with a trip here.

Children up to high school age go free and it is $8/$9 depending on your age.

Have Tea At The The Baker House 

If you love old buildings you are going to love this one. It’s on the shoreline of Lake Geneva and really is beautiful. 

Originally the home of Robert H. Baker and his family, the house is an incredible example of Queen Anne-style and dates from 1885. 

Inside it is very intricate and stunning with inlaid hardwood floors, detailed carvings, and 13 originally tiled fireplaces. Baker passed away before the house was finished so he never saw it. 

The house does now operate as a restaurant and hotel but a trip in for a glass of wine or cup of tea is well worth it to see this beautiful building.  One of the attractions on Lake Geneva for those that love architecture.

Explore Downtown Lake Geneva

Exploring the downtown area is definitely one of the Lake Geneva activities everyone will love. It’s a cute charming and happening place with lots of shops, restaurants, and bars. 

Do all the shopping you want in the cute little boutiques and antique shops then quench your thirst at one of the bars. And when you get hungry there are lots of restaurants in Lake Geneva to choose from.  

If the shops and bars get too much for you, you can stroll through Flat Iron Park.

It’s a lovely park downtown on the lakeshore. It’s home to the Brunk Performance Pavilion, Three Graces Fountain, a picturesque gazebo, and a statue of famed cartoon character Andy Gump. 

And it’s also the home to lots of Lake Geneva events such as Lake Geneva Concerts in the Park, Winterfest, Art in the Park, and VenetiaFlat.

If your ideal day is some rest and relaxation on a cool Wisconsin beach , then Lake Geneva has you covered.  

There are several beaches in the area all with a slightly different vibe so choose which one suits you best. 

Lake Geneva Public Beach is a great family beach but it can get crowded.

Riviera is a beautiful beach however you have to pay to enter. 

Fontana is also a great family beach and again there is a charge here. It’s also a great beach for a picnic.

Williams Bay Beach is well maintained and has some great walking trails nearby. 

Whichever you choose, going to a beach is one of the activities in Lake Geneva everyone can benefit from.

Go On A Boat Trip 

There is no better way to see this area than on a boat and there are companies who offer cruises around the lake. 

Some offer narration and some don’t, some are quick and some tours much longer.

Whichever tour you go on you will get to see the shoreline and the incredible mansions and estate that line it. 

The most popular cruise is the US Mailboat Tour. Here you go on a mail route that delivers parcels and packages to houses around the lake. 

There are only a handful of places that still get their mail delivered by boat and this is one of them. 

And of course, there are cruises that offer evening dinner tours for those that want something a little more special.

Walk the Lake Geneva Shore Path

If you prefer to get around by foot then the Lake Geneva Shore Path is a great place to start. It is 26 miles end to end but you can just walk, run, or bike a part of it and split it up over several days. 

It’s a tranquil and charming walk that takes you past some of the mansions that made this area so famous. The scenery is also lovely, especially during fall in Wisconsin . 

Just make sure you stick to the path and don’t end up on some nearby private property and if you have a dog make sure you have a leash with you.

Going Zip-Lining Is A Fun Thing To Do In Lake Geneva Wisconsin

For those a little more adventures Lake Geneva does not disappoint. There are over 100 acres of zip-lining fun for you to enjoy here.  

There are a total of nine zip lines in the area each a little different with some suitable for children. There are also three sky bridges and three spiral staircases to enjoy in the trees. 

It’s not the cheapest thing to do but the equipment is provided and the adrenaline junkies will love it. One of the Lake Geneva activities for those with an adventurous spirit.

Visit A Brewery

For something a little more relaxation why not take it easy at one of the breweries in Lake Geneva. 

It’s a great way to support the local economy, unwind and spend some time in conversation.

The three main breweries in the area are The Geneva Lake Brewing Company, Sprecher’s Restaurant and Pub, and Topsy Turvy Brewery.

I would suggest picking the one that is nearest to you and making an afternoon or an evening of it.

If you love hiking, it doesn’t bet any better than hiking in Wisconsin.

If you want to get enjoy the great outdoors, take a trip to Big Foot Beach State Park.

It’s on the shore of the lake and offers over 6 and ½ miles of picturesque trails. 

The trails arent that challenging and most agree that the orange trail is the best one.  Most trails are wheelchair friendly and dogs are allowed on a leash. 

As well as hiking, you can swim, camp and ski in the winter. This is one of those Wisconsin state parks that everyone will love.

Rent a Scooter

One of the ways to see the attractions in Lake Geneva is by scooter. Yes in Lake Geneva you can hire scooters and go on a self-guided tour.  

You are given all the equipment and training you need and you can hire by the hour or day. Lake Geneva is also very scooter friendly with scenic roads, lakeside paths, and some lovely open spaces.  

They are really easy to ride and very lightweight. If you can ride a bike you can ride a scooter. It seems like a really fun way to go sightseeing in Lake Geneva.

Marvel At Black Pointe Estate And Gardens

The once the summer home of Chicago businessman Conrad Seipp, Black Pointe was built in 1887 and sits on the shores of the lake. 

Seipp’s great-grandson donated the house, grounds, and shoreline to the state of Wisconsin. And after renovations, it was opened to the public in 2007. 

It’s a beautiful 20 room Queen Anne-style home and is full of antiques and memories of lives gone by. 

It’s majestic and elegant and a lovely place to walk around and explore. It is now managed by the Wisconsin Historical Society. 

You do have to take a boat to get there but it’s worth that bit more effort. The Geneva Cruise Line tour boat has a tour then and it really is magical.

If you visit Wisconsin in winter, Lake Geneva must be on your list!

Get On Your Bike

If you fancy seeing Lake Geneva under the power of your own legs how about taking to your bike? It’s one of the popular things to do in Wisconsin.

While this area is pretty bike-friendly the place to go is the White River Bike Trail. It’s an 11.4-mile bike trail that is moderately trafficked.

It’s a pretty easy trail on a former rail line Elkhorn to Burlington, WI. You travel through some beautiful glaciial landscape which features some lovely vistas and wildflowers.

It’s best April through October and there are places to rent bikes in the town if you didn’t bring one. A great way to get out of downtown Lake Geneva and see some of the surrounding areas.

Get the Best View Ever

Want to get the best view of Lake Geneva? How about taking to the air?

Why not do something really special and take a sunset or sunrise hot air balloon flight? 

The one-hour journeys end with a champagne toast. The company in the area has a faultless safety record and they really offer delightful experiences.  

It’s a great way to see the sights from a different perspective and definitely a different way to see downtown Lake Geneva.

One of the events in Lake Geneva WI you need to participate in is the Tristan Crist Magic Theatre. This magic/Illusion show has all the thrills that have become associated with illusionists. Think Vegas style.

Its illusions, comedy, and magic all rolled into one and is one of the most popular Geneva attractions.

Visit A Winery

A winery and an artist studio mixed into one is why a trip to Studio Winery is a must. The two artists make their own artisanal wines on-site and offer daily wine tastings. 

The tasting room is more like an art studio and sometimes they also have local music there. 

This is more than a winery it’s like a trip into someone else’s passion and it’s a somewhat relaxing and creative experience all mixed into one. 

It has a vibrant and welcoming feel and they take a really lighthearted approach to everything they do here.

Explore A Nature Reserve

Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy is about a 10-minute drive away from Lake Geneva and is definitely one of the things to do if you want to get away from the busy Lake Geneva downtown. 

It’s a 231-acre park with a mix of diverse habitats and ecosystems. You will find wetlands, wood, forest, prairies, and meadows. 

There is also an arboretum and several creeks. It’s a great place to get lost in nature. 

There are various trails and boardwalks to walk along and capture nature at its best. The park is full of interesting flora and fauna as well as birds and wild animals so keep an eye out.

It’s definitely one of the scenic trails for hiking in the Midwest.

Go To A Waterpark

If you want a day off sightseeing and just want to have some fun then head to Timber Ridge Lodge & Waterpark.

Sprecher’s is closed replaced by Lake City Social. Geneva Lake Brewery is also closed. I only know this because I used to work at the other brewery which is still operating. 🙂

Williams Bay beach is best. Fontana and the beach by Rivera are more crowded.

Nice article but you CANNOT take any kind of vehicle, bike, stroller etc on the shore path! Absolutely no bikes are allowed. These are peoples front yards and there are many many areas it is just too rough. Grass, stairs, dirt, uneven ground, narrow in places. There are people walking in both directions. It’s only a walking path!

7. Explore the Black Point Estate and Gardens 

The historic mansion that sits on the shores of Lake Geneva was built by a Chicago beer mogul as a family getaway.

Board a boat to transport you to the estate the same way that guests arrived all those years ago. Catch a glimpse into the lives of Chicogo’s wealthy, turn-of-the-century elite. 

You’ll not only get a guided tour of the mansion’s luxurious living quarters, servants’ areas, and other functional areas of the home. You’ll also get to wander through the stunning manicured gardens.

10. Visit the East Troy Electric Railroad

Take a ride on a historic train through the scenic countryside. Located just 15 miles, or 24 km north of the town of Lake Geneva, the railroad is a fun and unique experience for people everybody.

Travel on the railway’s vintage electric trolley cars and historic steam locomotives through the beautiful Wisconsin countryside. You can choose from a dinner ride or night photo ride, or even a family picnic ride, with all of your favorite al fresco, treats.

Summer visitors look forward to Railroad’s June Railfest! The event includes face painting, model train displays, ham radio demos, and of course free popcorn at the depot.

11. Pie! 

Need I say more? The Lake Geneva Pie Co. in Geneva Square will have you extending your stay in Lake Geneva. And the sublime cream, fruit, and other dessert pies and crumbles aren’t all they have in store for you.

Make your stay “all pies all the time”, and pick up some amazing pot pies and quiches, too. And of course some cookies and muffins for between-meal snacks. Calories don’t count when you’re on vacation.

13. Visit the Geneva Lake Shore Path 

This scenic walking trail stretches around the entire perimeter of the lake, covering a total distance of 26 miles. That’s 5 miles longer than the perimeter of the lake itself, as it winds in and around the trees along the water.

The history of the shore path dates all the way back to 2500 BC when it was used by Native Americans to travel from one village to another. 

Today the property owners along the lake maintain the path as it crosses their land. Each family adds their own brand to their section of the path. These unique touches are a part of the fun as you follow the trail.

Along the path, you’ll see historic old homes, many of which have been beautifully preserved and restored over the years. They offer a glimpse into the lavish lifestyles of the wealthy families, many from Chicago, who once summered here. 

14. Taste Some of the Local Wines

Lake Geneva and the surrounding area are home to several wineries, offering tastings and tours of their vineyards. You may even be able to pick seasonal fruit after your tasting, or learn to pair wine and chocolate!

Start at Studio Winery right in Lake Geneva, and enjoy their wines, moonshine, and other spirits. They offer live music, too, as well as art and jewelry created by their own artist, and art classes if you feel inspired.

From there, visit the nearby Apple Barn Orchard and Winery in Elkhorn. Or any of the others scattered around the picturesque Wisconsin countryside. Take a day to visit a few, or spread the fun out over your stay and go back to your favorites.

Every Thursday morning throughout the summer you’ll find Lake Geneva’s Farmer’s Market right outside the Horticultural Hall.

Whose kids don’t love playing in the sand? There are a couple of great beaches to choose from, and I suggest you try them both out to find your favorite.

Riviera Beach is a designated child-friendly beach, with lifeguards on duty and fairly clean restrooms. There’s a daily fee of approximately US $10, but kids under 6 are free. Or check out the seasonal pass!

Big Foot Beach State Park even welcomes your pets. Besides having a sandy white beach for swimming, there is also a playground, camping facilities, and 5 miles of hiking trails. 

22. Visit the Adventure Center

The Grand Geneva Adventure Center is full of activities for the kids. It’s located in the same spot as the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa mentioned above.

Practice archery, try out frolf (frisbee golf, or disc golf if you’re more refined), or work on your serve on one of the 2 sand volleyball courts.

23. Ride the Safari Lake Geneva

This is a great chance for your kids to see some epic wildlife in person. This safari tour allows you to drive through a wildlife park as many times as you’d like. See a variety of exotic animals, such as giraffes, zebras, and ostriches. 

While you’re here, learn about the conservation programs they support. You and your kids can even become FrogWatch USA Volunteers!

24. Challenge Each Other on the Mini Golf Course

The family-owned and operated 18-hole miniature golf course is a popular spot in Lake Geneva in the summertime.

25. Explore Moose Mountain Falls Indoor Water Park

Have your little ones experience the fun of water play no matter the weather outside. Moose Mountain Falls, located inside Timber Ridge Lodge , is the perfect kid-friendly activity while visiting Lake Geneva.

East Troy Electric Railroad Museum Christmas Train

In the 19th century, this lake, which was back then known as the Big Foot Lake (named after Potawatomi Chief Maunk-suck ) underwent some change. The big city of Chicago had discovered a beautiful lake area northwest of it, which the city folk could use as a getaway. Soon there were summer homes being built around the water. Then a railway line connected the city to the area that is now Williams Bay. And that was followed by The Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which saw many Chicagoans rebuild their lives here around the lake. 

Later, a surveyor who visited the lake area thought it reminded him of the Geneva on the banks of Lake Seneca, New York, and renamed this lake in Wisconsin as Geneva . The name stuck. So did several of the affluent estates that came into being all those years ago. And it continues to attract people! People who don’t and cannot have a home by the lake come here to holiday & experience the charm of this historic small town.

Over the years, the lake that began drawing people to it went from being a summer hotspot to a resort town to a year-round destination. Transportation

Summer is when Lake Geneva sees most of its visitors. It’s been the case since the late 19th century. People come in to relax on the beach, paddle board, boat, cruise & fly board. All the restaurants and shops in town are open and bustling with activity in the warmer months. 

Although it’s known for being busy in the summer, Lake Geneva has been turning into a year-round destination with the festivities organized in fall and winter.

In winter, there’s a tree lighting, a Christmas parade, storefronts are decked up in holiday displays and an ice castle is built. Lake Geneva , known in French as Lac Léman , is one of the largest lakes in western Europe. It lies on the course of the Rhone river on the frontier between France and Switzerland .

Aside from the city and canton of Geneva most destinations in the Lake Geneva region are in either the Swiss canton of Vaud or the French department of Haute Savoie . For its part Vaud is the largest canton in the French speaking part of Switzerland, and the third largest in the country as a whole. The geography is varied, with the Jura mountains in the north, a hilly plain in the center and in the southwest the Alps. The main attractions of the region are the cities and towns surrounding the lake, the opportunities for skiing and hiking in both mountain ranges, and of course the lake itself.

The shores of Lake Geneva are entirely French speaking, though you will also hear Swiss German, Italian, and English. In Geneva and Lausanne, it is not uncommon for people around you to be having conversations in four different languages.

The only airport in this region is in Geneva (Genève-Cointrin). It is smaller than the airport in Zürich , but very heavily internationally connected due to the UN's presence in Geneva. You can also easily fly into Zürich and catch an express train south.

By train [ edit ]

The TGV from France and the Cisalpino from Italy stop in Geneva, Lausanne, Vevey, and Montreux. From Germany or Austria you will have to change in Basel or Zürich.

Most towns on Lake Geneva are served by the boats of the Compagnie Génerale de navigation (CGN) . As well as modern boats, CGN operates five heritage paddle steamers build at the beginning of the 20th century. On some routes, boats are the fastest mean of transport (between Lausanne and Evian, for example). On most other routes though, boats are much slower than trains, but they often offer more scenic views.

Private boat tours and transfers from Geneva to any port on the lake is by Léman Transfers. Groups of up to 6 passengers can be privately chauffeured around the lake. - Léman Transfers [dead link] .

• Chocolaterie Tristan . In Bougy-Villars, a cute little village half-way between Lausanne and Geneva , one shouldn't miss this little artisanal chocolate factory. Unique chocolates with all sort of original flavours such as spice, tea, olive oil, and many more, are prepared here. You can get there by bus from Allaman (IKEA train stop). On the way, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the mountains and the surrounding vineyards. Once in the village, let the scent guide you to the shop. Lausanne is a place that sparks strong reactions. In a country of spectacular natural beauty, it's a staggeringly beautiful city that's often called Switzerland’s San Francisco.

Much of the city is still wooded and the lakefront promenades spill over with beds of vibrantly colourful flowers. Attractive, interesting, worldly, and well aware of how to have a good time, it’s simply Switzerland’s sexiest city.

If Switzerland has a counterculture, it can be seen most strongely in the clubs and cafés of Lausanne. The city has a long tradition of fostering intellectual and cultural innovation.

La Gruyère region

Gruyères village is the best-known attraction of the region known as La Gruyère. The region takes in the market town and regional transport hub of Bulle, which isn’t lacking in charm, although there’s little reason to visit other than to switch transport.

From here, trains on the narrow-gauge GFM line will take you to Gruyères itself. They'll also take you to the cheese dairy at Pringy and the Cailler chocolate factory at Broc.

Gruyères itself is known for its fairy-tale castle that sits atop a single crag that rises above the rolling lowlands of Canton Fribourg.

This is one of Switzerland’s most photogenic sights, and within reach of Lake Geneva. Gruyères therefore attracts hordes of day-trippers. They come to stroll on the village’s only street and explore the impressive château.

Up in the village, the castle, with its rooms full of Flemish tapestries, heaves with visitors. The town's two adjacent museums are less busy, and devoted to somewhat contrasting art forms. Namely Buddhist Tibetan art and contemporary graphic design.

Where to stay in Gruyères

• Best for couples : Fleur de Lys . An excellent choice in the heart of Gruyères, with rooms that either overlook the square or the scenery that stretches south from the village.
• Best for cosy comfort : L’Hôtel de Gruyères . This homely, welcoming three-star hotel just outside the village offers fine views from the outdoor terrace and a small spa.

The gently curving northwestern shore of the lake from Geneva to Lausanne (some 65km) is known as La Côte. It’s characterized by a succession of hamlets and small villages, almost without exception pretty and well-kept.

Dozens of châteaux scatter the landscape, most of which remain in private hands. Those that aren’t include the historic Château de Coppet, close to Geneva, and the Château de Prangins near Nyon. The latter houses an excellent museum devoted to Swiss history.

Other major stop-offs include the attractive harbour-town of Nyon, which has its own château and Roman museum. A major town under the Romans, this has mellowed into an attractive little port.

The town is spread out among fields and lawns that reach down to the water, and is backed by acres of vineyards. There’s a château and an excellent Roman museum. The nearby Château de Prangins houses the regional branch of the National Museum.

Elsewhere, the quiet, wine-growing lakeshore town of Morges is a pretty, peaceful place to stop-off.

The waterside boasts a sturdy castle (the Château de Morges) that’s home to four military museums. Just beyond is the Parc de l’Indépendence, home to an annual tulip festival (mid-April to mid-May).

• Best for town centre charm : Hostellerie du XVIe Siècle, Nyon . Occupying an arcaded building in the cobbled Old Town, the rooms are basic but clean, the staff are friendly, and the location is very convenient.
• Best for lakeside luxury : Le Rive, Nyon . This opulent four-star offers a choice of rooms in a quiet but central location by the lake.
• Best for couples : Romantik Hotel Mont-Blanc au Lac, Morges . An historic waterside hotel with elegantly furnished rooms, many of which have lake views.

Vevey and around

Whereas brassy Montreux has freely embraced all that glitters, its old-fashioned neighbour Vevey is more discriminating.

Vevey quietly cleans its streets, tends its flowerbeds, makes sure it has enough, but not too many, hotels. It then waits for visitors to find the town for themselves.

Generations of tourists return to Vevey to stroll the flowered promenades, muse on the Dent d’Oche, venture across the water on the belle-époque ships, and take high tea in grand hotels.

That said, there’s more to do than this suggests. Vevey’s shops, museums and local life mean you could easily use it as a comfortable base from which to explore the whole lake region.

Upmarket Montreux is spectacularly located, drenched in sunshine and protected from chill northerlies by a wall of mountains.

Apart from big-spender shopping, the main reasons to visit are to absorb the panorama of the Dents du Midi peaks across the lake. They also love to visit the unmissable Château de Chillon, and to catch the stellar annual Montreux Jazz Festival.

Most visitors make their way to the town’s most popular photo-op. It's a flamboyant bronze statue of Freddie Mercury who recorded much of his music here, and whose association with the town is explored in the Queen Studio Experience.

Where to stay in Montreux

• Best for palatial luxury : Le Montreux Palace . This legendary luxury hotel is set in its own gardens on the lake. Rooms retain their original character, and links with Nabokov (he occupied a penthouse apartment) resonate.
• Best for couples : Grand Hôtel Suisse-Majestic . Right in town, this old belle époque establishment has much of the style and atmosphere of Le Montreux Palace at around half the price.
• Best for good-value elegance : Villa Toscane . A fabulous Art Nouveau creation on the Montreux waterfront, with balconies, meticulous service, and style.
• Best for budget travellers : Auberge de Jeunesse . This good hostel with dorms and private rooms is located 1.5km east of Montreux centre, beside Territet train station.

1. Cathédrale Notre-Dame, Lausanne

Definitely up there with the greatest of French Gothic architecture, Lausanne's Cathédrale Notre-Dame is Switzerland’s finest Gothic building.

The foundations of the current building were probably laid in the mid-twelfth century, with construction continuing from 1190 through to the cathedral’s consecration in 1275.

2. Château de Gruyères

Fairy-tale charmer Château de Gruyères was occupied from 1080 to 1554 by the nineteen counts of Gruyères. Later it was home to the Savoyards and a rich Geneva dynasty, the Bovy and Balland families.

The approach to the castle is almost as enchanting as the building itself. You must walk the length of Gruyères’ impossibly picturesque main street with its central fountain and quaint houses bedecked with hanging signs.

3. H.R. Giger Museum, Gruyères

Hans Rudolf Giger is a Swiss graphic artist, best known for designing the special effects for the movie Alien as well as Poltergeist II, Alien 3 and others.

He has turned one of Gruyères’ old houses into a showcase for his unique brand of grotesque art – sexualized surrealist visions of machine-like humanoids, and nightmarish cityscapes. Find out more the H.R. Giger Musuem .

4. Cailler chocolate factory

On the edge of the village of Broc, you’ll detect luscious scents emanating from the Cailler chocolate factory . Founded in 1898, this is the sole production facility for Nestlé’s Cailler brand. It's named after one of the nineteenth-century pioneers of chocolate-making.

On arrival you’re led through a series of dioramas showing the history of chocolate. Learn about everything from its exploitation by Aztec rulers to its arrival in the fashionable drawing-rooms of Europe.

The climax comes in the Tasting Room. Here you’re let loose on tables piled with bite-sized chunks of every Cailler product in unlimited quantities.

The most refined and alluring of lakeside towns, Vevey’s visitors gravitate towards its lakefront. Here the main square opens right onto the water, with the toothy peaks of the Dents du Midi shimmering in the distance.

A great way to soak up the scenery is to book a cruise aboard a paddle steamer .

In August the square is the focus of the annual Street Artists’ Festival, when the town is taken over by jugglers, acrobats and mime artists. Visit on a Tuesday or Saturday and you’ll find it packed with stalls selling food, craft and wine.

Vevey is also home to a museum devoted to former resident Charlie Chaplin. Save time by booking your ticket to Chaplin's World ahead of your trip.

6. Vevey-Corseaux Plage

On hot days locals and visitors alike flock to this beach complex next to the Nestlé HQ. Hemmed in as it is between the lakeshore and a main road, it can get rather busy.

Facilities include open-air swimming pools, lake access (weather permitting) and volleyball.

7. Les Pléiades

The vantage point of Les Pléiades (1364m) can be reached from Vevey Gare by a narrow-gauge train. It trundles up through suburbs before becoming rack-and-pinion operated to cope with the climb into classic chalets-and-cowbells country.

From the top, views yawn out in all directions. From the summit proper, Mont Blanc and the massif of the Savoy Alps can clearly be seen. Hiking trails abound from this and other stations on the line.

8. Château de Chillon, Montreux

This is of the best-preserved medieval castles in Europe. The thirteenth-century Château de Chillon was once an inspiration for the poet Byron.

Best approached via a 45-minute marked shoreline walk, your first glimpse of it is unforgettable. Behold an elegant, turreted pile jutting out into the water, framed by trees and craggy mountains.

One of the best excursions from Lausanne is the short but scenic voyage across the lake to the French spa town of Evian, opposite Ouchy.

Little Evian has been gentrified, but it still has sights worthy of attention. Start with the modern spa complex that exploits the famous mineral springs.

The town centre is to the right as you disembark and is centred on busy Rue Nationale. One of the grand Art Nouveau edifices on this street houses the Espace evian, which has an exhibition on the town’s watery past.

Ten minutes on the bus from Gruyères-gare is Moléson-Sur-Gruyères village. It's a small resort giving access to the heights of Le Moléson mountain via a funicular to Plan-Francey, and a cable car to the summit.

Panoramic views from the summit take in Lake Geneva, the Pre-Alps and even Mont Blanc. Relatively easy walking tracks rise from Moléson to Plan-Francey, but become more challenging above that.

Rail lines and minor roads between Lausanne and Fribourg pass by Romont. This medieval town is perched atop an isolated round hill, with lofty 360-degree views.

The Old Town is marked by two round towers, which are linked by a single street.Rue du Château becomes Rue de l’Église where it runs past the Collegiate Church.

The Castle, the town’s other main sight, is home to a fine museum of stained glass. Its shady courtyard, which is surrounded by elevated wooden galleries, gives access to the Vitromusée with its displays of stained glass.

The lakeshore east from Lausanne

The compact stretch of Lake Geneva shore east from Lausanne to Vevey – known as the Lavaux – is one of the most alluring of all Swiss regions, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Its floral waterside promenades are flanked on one side by wide expanses of vines. On the other they are surrounded by vistas across to the Savoy Alps that rise rise behind the Dents-du-Midi on the far shore.

This is perfect country for gentle walks and bike rides punctuated by samplings of the local nectar. Cafés and pintes abound, set in the cobbled streets of picturesque villages.

This superbly scenic train journey travels from Montreux into the surrounding mountains.

The longer of the two narrow-gauge lines terminating at Montreux Gare is the MOB line. It climbs northwest through the steep hills into Canton Bern.

Hiking, rambling and skiing around St-Cergue

The unassuming town of St-Cergue is set in some wild countryside, with hiking trails that see few ramblers. Enjoy a short and satisfying walk up to the Vieux Château, where the view back over the lake more than compensates for the fact that there is no actual castle here.

In winter, St-Cergue provides easy downhill skiing for families, and plenty of excellent cross-country routes.

Family activities

A few kilometres around the lakeshore from Chillon, Le Bouveret is a family-friendly holiday village. Its Swiss Vapeur Parc is a miniature railway complex featuring replica locomotives pulling passengers around 1.5km of track.

Aquaparc is just a stroll away — a heated, indoor waterpark complete with multiple flumes, slides, rides and eateries.

Lausanne festivals

It can seem like there’s always some celebration or other happening in Lausanne. All summer long, the Ouchy waterfront hosts informal music events – from techno to chamber music to African dance – just about every weekend, and always free.

Lausanne’s biggest party is the Festival de la Cité . Held in early July, it's more spontaneous and cutting-edge than the Montreux Jazz Festival happening at the same time just down the road. Not least because everything is free and out in the streets.

Otherwise aim for the Carnaval de Lausanne in March/April. Or try the Fête de la Musique — impromptu music in the streets during mid-June.

Montreux festivals

Hosting world-famous artists from R.E.M. to B.B. King, the Montreux Jazz Festival takes place over two weeks in early July. It's mainly held at the two stages within the Congress Centre, plus at the casino.

It covers the gamut of music from around the world. These days it's only very loosely committed to formal jazz. Over the decades, some sixty live albums have been recorded on its stages. Everything from jazz legends Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, Miles Davis and Quincy Jones to prog rock bands Yes and Jethro Tull.

Montreux’s other big events include October's Choral Festival , and the classical Septembre Musical .

Regional Pass

The excellent regional pass (Passeport Régional Leman-Alpes) is available online ( buy the regional pass here ) at train stations and tourist offices.

Coverage is wide. It takes in buses, trains and boats across the whole lake from Geneva airport to Montreux. It also includes routes into the Vaud Alps, and to Gruyères and Gstaad.

You get either five consecutive days of validity — any two days of free travel, plus three days at half-price — or seven days, including three days’ free travel.

Mainline CFF trains trace an arc around the northern lakeshore, from Geneva to Lausanne and Montreux. Smaller lines branch off at various points — into the Jura foothills in the west and the Prealps in the east.

Don’t miss the chance to take to the water. CGN boats link all points on the Swiss and French shores, most hopping between villages. Some also cross the lake to Yvoire, Thonon and Evian in France (don’t forget your passport).
