Dubai Stopover: What to See & Do in 6 Hours, 1, or 2 Days (+Planning Tips)

Are you traveling via Dubai and have a few hours to spare at the airport and are considering a Dubai layover ? Or are you thinking of a somewhat longer stopover in Dubai for one or two days… but are not sure if it’s worth it and what to see and do on Dubai stopover? This article should answer all your questions!

In this post, you can learn more about what to see and do on a short stopover in Dubai – from just 6 hours to 1 or 2 days. We also include some practical tips that will help you make the most of your Dubai stopover or a short layover. At the bottom of this article, you can also find a few hotel suggestions for a short visit to Dubai. Find out!

From just a couple of hours to one or two days in Dubai- this guide will help you make the most of your Dubai stopover, so that you can see the very best of this bustling metropole.

TIP: Don’t spend your long Dubai layover sitting at the airport. Even if you only have half a day, you can see some of the city. And if you still have to book your flights through Dubai, see if you can squeeze at least one night in Dubai into your itinerary. It will be worth it!

Short layover in Dubai – see the best in just a few hours

Good to know: Keep in mind that immigration can sometimes take a long time in Dubai and getting back through security and leaving the country will also require at least an hour, not counting the time to get to the airport, etc. So if you have less than 6 hours in Dubai , I’d probably just book airport premium lounge access and stay at the airport. It’s not worth the stress.

But if you have at least 6 hours to spare for a stopover in Dubai and want to get the most out of your time, I have two suggestions for how you could spend your time. These tips are based on our experience and the places we found to be most worthy to see in Dubai. See options 1 and 2 below.

OPTION 1: Visit Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa

One of the best options for those with  limited time to explore Dubai would be to head to Dubai Mall . You can take a taxi or a metro from the airport – here you can find more information about Dubai public transport . Alternatively, you can save time by booking a private airport transfer in advance.

Neither option is very expensive, but the metro might be faster, especially during rush hours. On the other hand, metro stations in Dubai (especially the one at the Dubai Mall) are often very far from the actual place, so you have to do lots of walking. Booking a private transfer might be the least stressful option.

Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa - Dubai stopover

Here’s what you can see and do at the Dubai Mall on a short stopover in Dubai:

Dubai Fountains

Try to catch a (free) Dubai fountains music and light show. In the evenings, there are shows daily every half an hour starting at around 5.30 – 6 PM and until 11 PM. There is also a show at 1 PM (Fridays at 2 PM) and at 1.30 PM.

The show itself is free of charge, but in the evenings, you can also opt for a traditional boat ride on Burj Lake. It’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in Dubai, so you have to get your tickets in advance. You can book the Burj Lake Ride by Traditional Boat tickets here . We recently did this and really enjoyed it.

Burj Khalifa

Burj Khalifa – the tallest building in the world – is equally impressive from below as from the top. If you have time, I suggest you go to the top for the amazing views over Dubai.

Good to know: Burj Khalifa At the Top experience is very popular and often sold out. So if you want to visit it on a short Dubai stopover, you really have to book the Burj Khalifa tickets in advance . Also, keep in mind that even with timed entry slots, you will have long lines so count at least 1.5-2 hours for a visit here to be on the safe side.

PRO TIP: If your time is limited and you want to visit Burj Khalifa, get the tickets that include level 148 . These tickets give you priority access to the elevators and security check (+ other benefits) and will save you a lot of time and stress.

Alternative tip: Instead of going to the top of Burj Khalifa, you can visit Dubai Sky Views Observatory , from where you can enjoy great views of Burj Khalifa. Sky Views is conveniently located very close to the metro exit at Dubai Mall station (just walk towards the Mall and you’ll see it), is cheaper, and takes less time to visit. Also here, be sure to get tickets in advance !

Dubai Fountain Show at night as seen from the top of Burj Khalifa

Dubai Aquarium

Dubai Aquarium is located inside the Dubai Mall. You can see the big aquarium from the mall itself (no need to purchase a ticket). If you decide to pay a visit to the aquarium itself, count at least an hour for the visit.

The same as with most other attractions in Dubai, it’s best to book your tickets in advance – the ticket queue at Dubai Aquarium can get extremely long at certain times. On top of that, it’s cheaper if booked in advance.

TIP: If you are planning to visit several attractions, it’s often cheaper to get combo tickets. One of the most popular combinations in Dubai is the 2-in-1 ticket for Burj Khalifa and Dubai Aquarium . Quite frankly, the aquarium is way too expensive for what it is if you pay full price for it.

5 free things to do in Dubai that you absolutely shouldn't miss

Dubai Mall is one of the biggest shopping malls in the world. You could easily spend a week there and still not see everything…

Depending on how long your Dubai stopover is and whether you still have some time left after you saw the fountains, the Burj Khalifa, and the Dubai Aquarium, you can do some shopping or explore further.

Don’t miss the impressive waterfall inside the mall! There is also an ice rink, dino museum, cinema, kids playground KidZania, games and attractions of SEGA Republic, The Emirates A380 Experience, and much more.

OPTION 2: Join an organized Dubai layover sightseeing tour

If you have a 5-9 hours layover in Dubai, probably the best you can do is book a highly-rated  private layover sightseeing tour .

This private tour with airport transfers brings you to some of the most famous places in Dubai, such as Burj Khalifa and Burj Al-Arab. It also already includes the Burj Khalifa ticket.

That way you don’t have to worry about any practical details – your guide will pick you up at the airport and show you the very best of the Emirate in a limited time. Since this is a private tour, the route can be customized to suit your interests.

If your Dubai layover is shorter, then you may want to opt for this 3-hr private Dubai transit tour instead. This tour will pick you up and drop you off at the airport and show you some of the most iconic places in Dubai. Needless to say, you won’t have much time to visit any of the attractions, but it’s a good way to see what Dubai is about and a good alternative to sitting at the airport half a day…

Important to know: Traffic in Dubai can be really busy and unpredictable. So only book city tours if your layover is not in the middle of the day (afternoon traffic is the worst) and you have plenty of time. Otherwise, see our option 1 above – it will be more relaxing.

One full day stopover in Dubai

If you have at least one night or one full day on your Dubai stopover , you can combine the visit to the Dubai Mall & Burj Khalifa with a short tour of the city.

I already mentioned all the best things to do in and around the Dubai Mall. Half a day is enough for the main highlights there. So in addition to that, I advise joining one of the short tours that show you a bit more of Dubai in a short time. Below you can find a selection of some of the best options to consider. Take a look!

Best half-day tours for your Dubai stopover

Here are some of the best short tours that you could do on your Dubai stopover:

  • Old Dubai & Markets . This Dubai city half-day sightseeing tour brings you to Dubai’s famous traditional markets – Spice Souq and Deira Gold Souq. It also includes a visit to Al Khayma Heritage House and Blue Mosque.
  • Dubai Marina . There are many companies offering Marina dinner cruises with traditional Tanouri dance performances and they are all pretty much the same. We took the Alexandra Dhow Cruise as it was the best price-quality tour, certainly for families with children, and we were not disappointed. If you prefer a less ‘traditional’ cruise, there are plenty of other Marina cruises – with or without food. And even if you don’t take the cruise, Dubai Marina is not to be missed. It’s especially lively in the evening.
  • Dubai Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour allows you to see Dubai’s top attractions at your own pace. This is a great option if you have one full day for your Dubai stopover. This is the best-rated hop-on hop-off tour in Dubai .
  • Morning or evening desert tour. The sunrise balloon flight is a nice option if you have a morning in Dubai and can’t find much interesting to do in the city early in the morning. This Camel riding tour is a wonderful way to experience the Dubai desert in the late afternoon/evening. We recently did this tour when we had a late-night flight out of Dubai and it was a great way to fill the evening, and a really enjoyable experience too!

Dubai Marina Dhow dinner cruise

Two-day Dubai stopover

If you have two days on your Dubai stopover , you should spend one day visiting the best of Dubai attractions mentioned above .

For your second day, I recommend choosing one of the three options mentioned below – that will make your short visit to Dubai even more memorable. Take a look!

OPTION 1: Spend a day at the water park in Dubai

If your Dubai stopover is in the summer when it’s very hot in the UAE, simply consider spending a day at a waterpark. It’s also a great option for families traveling via Dubai with children.

There are two major water parks in Dubai: Atlantis Aquaventure and Wild Wadi Water Park . Wild Wadi has more attractions for smaller kids, whereas Aquaventure has more for all ages.

TIP: Entrance tickets for the Dubai water parks are much cheaper if booked online and at least a week in advance.

Dubai stopover - spend a day at a waterpark

OPTION 2: Take a day tour to Abu Dhabi

If you rather go sightseeing and want to get the very most out of your short Dubai stopover, visit Abu Dhabi. It has so much to offer!

With a full day to spare, don’t look any further and take this highly-rated full-day tour . It brings you to the top landmarks and is a wonderful way to see the best of Abu Dhabi in a day. We did this tour recently and I can highly recommend it (but only if you have a full day for it!).

If you are short on time and only want to see the famous Sheikh Zayed Mosque, then consider this popular half-day tour instead. It takes about 5-6 hours.

OPTION 3: Go on a Dubai desert safari

There are many companies that organize Dubai desert tours. Below are two of the best options.

We did both of these tours – on different trips to Dubai – and really enjoyed them both. Since I get car sick rather quickly, I preferred the camel tour a bit more than dune bashing in a 4×4, but the rest of the family found both tours equally fun.

1. 4×4 Dubai Desert Safari . This 4-7-hour tour is a short introduction to all things Emirati: dune bashing, sandboarding, camel riding (5 minutes max), and BBQ dinner.

2. Sunset Camel Trek with Shows & BBQ . This tour is a bit longer and is a bit more luxurious. It also includes a longer (30-45min) camel ride in the desert.

Where to stay on your Dubai stopover

Now that you know that Dubai stopover is well worth it and you won’t get bored in the city, you need a place to stay for 1 or 2 nights. Below is a small selection of Dubai hotels that are well located for a short stopover in Dubai.

TIP: I really recommend you stay in Dubai at least one night instead of just doing a quick Dubai layover. Immigration can be hectic and it will be very stressful if you only have a couple of hours between the flights.

If you are visiting Dubai for just a night or two, it’s best to stay close to the airport or close to the Dubai Mall as this is one part of the city you really don’t want to miss on a short stopover in Dubai.

TIP: Staying close to the airport is cheaper than staying in the center, but staying close to the Dubai Mall gives you more flexibility and more time to explore.

Here are some of the best-rated hotels at Dubai Airport:

  • $$$ Le Méridien Dubai Hotel
  • $$ Millennium Airport Hotel Dubai
  • $ Flora Inn Hotel Dubai Airport (the most lower-budget popular choice).

Here are some of the best choices close to Dubai Mall:

  • $$$$$ Kempinski Central Avenue Dubai (rooms with a view of Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain are possible).
  • $$$ Sofitel Dubai Downtown (conveniently located close to the Dubai Mall metro station).
  • $$ Rove Downtown Dubai (great price for the location).

So, this is our guide for a short stopover in Dubai. I hope you found some ideas for the best things to do for Dubai stopover or a short layover.

There is just so much to see and do in the city that it’s difficult to suggest one stopover itinerary that fits everyone. But I’m confident that any of the options listed above will be a great choice for your Dubai stopover. Enjoy your trip!

Hi , i have 9 hour transit in Dubai this coming Jan 2024. Can you help to recommend something for me to do? Perhaps a tour in Dubai. I never been to Dubai before. Please help. Thanks

Wednesday 20th of December 2023

Hi Shahid, all our recommendations are already in the article above. Have a great trip!

Hi Jurga Found your ideas very helpful. I’ve got 5.5 hr transit and I read you don’t suggest leaving the airport for less than 6. In your opinion is 5.5 still doable? I’ll have my 18yo daughter with me and would love to show her a quick glimpse of Dubai given its so spectacular. We arrive at 5.30am so is there anything we could do other than stay in the airport for all that time (even if I got a premium lounge access pass)? I was thinking about catching a cab into town to do a brief sightseeing tour and maybe stop at the Burj K? I’m interested in your thoughts/ideas. Many thanks. Michael.

Thursday 2nd of November 2023

@Jurga, thanks for getting back to me…much appreciated. 😉

Wednesday 25th of October 2023

Hi Michael, if your flight arrives on time and you can get through the immigration fast enough, you might be able to quickly see the city. It's hard for me to say, only you can decide if it's worth the stress. But yes, I guess it could work. Otherwise, you can just wait to decide until you get there and if everything goes smooth, go and see Burj Khalifa. Whether you can actually visit it inside, that's another story (also because of the early hours of your layover), but it's impressive enough to just walk around the Dubai Mall area. Don't forget to get back to the airport on time! Have a great trip!

Will i need to be tested for Covid-19 during my brief 12 hour stop over in Dubai, will i be allowed to board my next flight without a PCR test, and if PCR is necessary then how to make sure the test results be available in time for boarding ?

Tuesday 29th of June 2021

@Jurga, I was wondering the same thing. I'm travelling from USA to Cairo and I have a layover for 7 hours in Dubai and wanted to visit Downtown Area. I was wondering if my PCR test taken in the USA will be good to get back in my Dubai to Cairo flight?

Thursday 24th of December 2020

Sorry, but I really cannot help you with the advice in regards to this. The rules and requirements can change rapidly anywhere in the world these days. The last thing I heard of Dubai is that you had to do the test at home, before you leave, and be able to show a negative test upon arrival. But I don't know if it's still the case today and probably nobody can tell you how it will be in a month or two. So you have to check the official sources for the most up to date information in time for your trip. Good luck!

I m going to karachi ,from Bahrain and stop in Dubai is for 2 hrs can I change and take stop over for a day without any penalty?and can i have a free hotel

Monday 7th of December 2020

Hi, I'm afraid this is not something I can help you with. You have to ask your airline if you can change your ticket. As for the hotel, you can only get free accommodation when there are flight cancelations or significant delays and it's not something that you should count on. :)

Plan the Perfect Dubai Stopover: Top Tips and Recommended Tours

Should you leave dxb airport, and if so, where do you go.

Are you looking at a flight via Dubai but not sure about connection times?  Looking at the prospect of a long Dubai International Airport (DXB) layover to contend with, or should you make it a full day’s stopover, get out of the airport and explore Dubai?

In this post, we will cover several Dubai layover and stopover options including:

  • Staying at the airport – how long can you realistically spend at DXB!
  • Take a guided tour – best short tour options
  • Self-explore around Dubai – transport options and popular sites
  • Staying near the airport – which hotels are closest or offer transfers
  • Transferring to Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi – how to move between the two biggest cities and airports DXB to AUH

Is it a stopover or a layover?

Some important terminology to understand when booking your flights, as it can make a BIG difference in ticketing and baggage.

A layover is simply a break you have between flights.  If you are on a continuous ticket with the one airline/network, your checked luggage will go all the way through and you’ll be issued tickets for both flights at the outset (or need to collect your second ticket at the transfer desk).

This can relieve some stresses, but remember if you gate check anything like a stroller, you won’t get it back to your end destination – a VERY important factor to think about if you’re planning to leave the airport (you can learn more here about whether you’ll need your stroller during a a stopover in Dubai )

A stopover, on the other hand, is where you have two separate flights. Usually through a hub city where you are then changing airline.  You MAY be able to get your bags ticketed all the way through, but likely scenario is you need to collect your bags and check in again.

This can work well if you want to stop overnight (or longer) and have access to all your clothing and gear but isn’t ideal when you have a short turn around times between flights.

Emirates Layover Passengers DXB

This guide is focused on passengers planning a stopover or layover with Emirates of less than 24 hours. Pop on over to our itinerary ideas if you are planning a longer stopover in Dubai – there’s plenty more you can fit in!

Option 1- Staying Inside Dubai Airport

Our suggestion is anything under 5 hours, you are best staying within DXB airport to prevent the hassles of checking in and out through immigration and risk missing your flight.  International flights require checking in a minimum 2 hours beforehand.

We have a great guide to all the things you can do staying in Dubai Airport here , it includes:

  • Airport lounges available for transiting passengers in DXB
  • Sleeping options available inside the airport
  • Things to do in DXB – gardens, family areas, quiet zones, eating and entertainment

Pop on over to our Dubai airport layover guide here to assess the option of simply staying in the airport during a layover.

Dubai City Stopover Tour Options

Unlike other large international airports, Dubai does NOT offer a free stopover city tour.  There are plenty of paid tour options though depending on your time of day and budget. Just be mindful, you may not be able to start a city tour from DXB.

Take a   Big Bus Tour:   This is a great way to see a lot of the city in a short space of time.  You may not be able to get off at all the stops depending on your available time. There are 3 routes and several ticket categories to choose from. Note this does not leave directly from the airport though, you’d need to get yourself to  Deira City Center  which is a couple of stops on the Red Line Metro departing from Terminal 1/3 DXB.

>> See prices for a Big Bus Tour Dubai

Join a desert safari  – only a short time in the evening? Let’s forget the concrete jungle and escape to the desert!  Most tours depart in the evening so you will find a wide selection available on overnight stopovers.  If you are not staying at a hotel, it’s no problem to pop to one of the nearby hotels such as Holiday Inn Dubai Airport to use as a collection point.

>> See Desert Safari options available through Get Your Guide

There are also many tours that specialise in morning adventures to see the sunrise in the desert – perfect if you have one of those tricky overnight arrivals and you’re at a loss what to do.

>> Try this sunrise camel trek in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve.

Dubai Old & Modern City Tour  – Join a guided tour through the city highlights, including cold refreshments, abra ride and vehicle to get you around all the highlights of town.

Getting Around Dubai – Self-Guided Dubai Stopover Tours

The two easiest options for visitors are using the Metro and hiring taxis or private cars . There are also Uber and Careem services available in Dubai ( download the apps in advance if you want to use these options).

Some of the popular “stop, look and click” spots around Dubai include:

  • The Burj Al Arab  – Iconic “7-star” beachfront hotel on Sunset Beach Jumeirah
  • Burj Khalifa   – World’s tallest building – check out ticketing options here to visit the different observation decks & discover dining choices.
  • Dubai Mall   – One of the biggest in the world, packed full of restaurants, family entertainment, Aquarium , Ice Rink, Kidzania – you name it!  At night stop to see the free fountain and light show extravaganza
  • Atlantis the Palm – the amazing luxury hotel on the man-made Palm Jumeirah
  • Souk Madinat Jumeirah   – Modern souk built in traditional style with many eateries and views back to Burj al Arab
  • The Walk & The Beach  – Trendy new area of Dubai JBR, lots of street art, cafes and activities always going on
  • La Mer – even closer to the airport, this is a great fun waterfront venue, ideal for kids to stretch their legs, have a bounce or even a slide at Laguna, or simply enjoy Dubai’s modern and colourful beachfront vibes
  • Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood – including the Dubai Museum, wonder the oldest streets of Dubai, through to the Al Seef Waterfront district where you can catch a traditional abra (boat) to Deira
  • Gold & Spice Souks   – taste a different side of Dubai, Deira is home to active trading souks and views of Dubai Creek
  • Dubai Festival City – super close to the airport, a great little night spot to enjoy shopping and a bite to eat with its very own evening lights show spectacular, IMAGINE

Metered taxis are readily available at all hotels and tourist spots so you should have no problems organising your return back to the airport after sightseeing.

We have a detailed guide here on exactly how to get from Dubai Airport to Dubai Mall and the Downtown area of Dubai .

Dubai Taxi

Or why not hire a private car and driver?   There are options with reputable ticketing agents such as Get Your Guide to book a car and driver  that will pick you up from the airport then drive you directly to the highlights.

Dubai Stopover Accommodation options

Before you go any further! Check if you are eligible for a free hotel flying with Emirates under Dubai Connect!

Dubai Airport used to be one of the central points of the city but as you can imagine in a city the size and scale of Dubai, the boundaries have grown.  The nearest areas to Dubai Airport are Bur Dubai and Deira. Downtown Dubai can be 15-25 minutes away depending on traffic and JBR/The Palm Jumeirah 40 minutes away. We recommend staying immediately adjacent to the airport for stops under 24 hours.

Dubai International Terminal Hotel   is the only hotel actually inside the airport, Terminal 3.  Including full 5 star hotel facilities with restaurants, gym, spa, swimming pool this is your best luxury option without needing to actually leave the airport.  No family rooms available but you can add up to one extra bed / cot with charge.  Room rates start from 650 AED ($177 USD).

>> Check prices here for Dubai International Terminal Hotel

Nearest reasonable accommodation options next to but not in Dubai Airport

(NB you will need to clear customs and be eligible for a Visa on Arrival or Transit Visa to use these options)

Premier Inn Dubai International Airport  – located adjacent to the airport you can catch their free shuttle. Facilities include double and family-sized rooms (sofa bed), a swimming pool, restaurants, a small supermarket nearby.  This is our preferred and most recommended option for families close by.  You can still go into town for some sightseeing but know you are staying near the airport for any early starts.  Expect rates from 200 AED ($55 USD), often cheaper if flying at off-peak times

>> Check prices here for Premier Inn Dubai International Airport

Holiday Inn Express Dubai Airport  – very clean, neat basic nearby accommodation with a free shuttle.  A promise of soundproof rooms, comfy beds, private bathroom and an on-site restaurant.  Prices from 150 AED ($41 USD), if time permits much more cost-effective and comfortable than using the sleep pods within the airport for a good stretch of sleep.

>> Click here to see prices for Holiday Inn Express Dubai Airport

Le Meridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre –  For a more luxury but still very close to the airport this is our top pick.  There are multiple restaurants on-site, different room configurations, pool and extensive spa facilities if you’re seeking that perfect transit massage.  Note airport shuttle is charged but you can get a short taxi, minimum flagfall 12AED.  Prices start from 450 AED ($123 USD).

>> Check Prices for Le Meridien Dubai

Dubai Connect – FREE transit hotel for Emirates passengers

As we mentioned above, SOME passengers with Emirates who have an unavoidable connection time between 10 to 24 hours are eligible for accommodation, meals and ground transportation courtesy of Emirates.

You need to meet a few conditions, ie no better flight connection available and don’t get a say in which hotel – but if saving money and looking for convenience this could be your best option – check here where we talk you through exactly how it works.

The hotels currently available through Dubai Connect are:

  • Copthorne Hotel Dubai
  • Le Méridien Airport Hotel Dubai
  • Arabian Park Hotel Dubai

Frequently asked questions for Dubai Stopover passengers

Are you changing flights in Dubai and will have your bags with you during a stopover?  There are   storage lockers available at Terminals 1 and 3 . Not entirely cheap though at 35 AED/bag at terminal 3 for up to 12 hours.   If you have the option to check your bags all the way through, we strongly suggest you use this and just take a small day bag with you for a stopover. Families, we know this part can be tricky if you’re considering an outing during a layover.  This is why there’s a great reason to take a compact folding stroller with you that can fit in the overhead locker of the plane.

This is difficult to answer as it really depends on your tolerance for heat and how much you enjoy indoor spaces!   Daytime temperatures in the peak of summer can hit 50c (122F).  For most, this is beyond pleasant and being outdoors for any length of time is frankly hideous. If you do leave the airport you will likely find yourself jumping from one air-conditioned building to the next. That said, there is an increasing range of indoor activities available from the Green Planet biodome to indoor skiing at Mall of the Emirates, skating, the Aquarium, Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa so you can very much plan an indoor adventure, just don’t expect to be sunning yourself on the beach mid-August. Desert safaris do still run in the summer but at a reduced number and some activities will be cancelled. Evenings are still very hot and sticky still.  If you are planning to stay somewhere with a refreshing pool, make sure it’s temperature-controlled. You can see our complete guide to tackling Dubai in the Summer here.

The UAE is a Muslim country and the holy month of Ramadan is strongly observed.  If you are transiting through the airport you will likely see little outward change as transiting passengers are exempt from fasting.  Do note though many of the staff will still be observing Ramadan. Please bear this in mind looking at your behaviour – eating, what you’re wearing, public displays of affection – be modest. If you are venturing beyond the airport,   we recommend you read this visitors guide to Ramadan in Dubai  so you know what to expect – it’s not overly difficult to follow the social rules and avoid hefty fines, but no doubt very confusing and intimidating if you are unfamiliar with the rules and traditions that surround Ramadan. You can check the expected timing for Ramadan and other religious holiday’s in the UAE here.

To enter the UAE as a tourist you will need a tourist visa.   These can be issued at the airport free  for those holding passports from the GCC, Western Europe, North America, Australasia and the Far East – we give you a complete run-through of who is eligible for visa on arrival here. Other nationalities can apply in advance through their airline or at the airport but charges may apply.

Transferring to Abu Dhabi from Dubai International Airport?

It is possible to do a stopover that involves flying into Dubai International (DXB) and out of Abu Dhabi (AUH) or vice versa.   There is nothing cheap and direct, however, so here are all your airport transfer options.

Free airline shuttles

Your ticket for either Emirates or Etihad Airlines will allow you to book through to your final destination in the UAE.

We give you a complete run-through of how the free airline buses work here , but summarised for you:

How to get from DXB to AUH

So if you’re flying  Emirates  but ultimately want to  end in Abu Dhabi , your ticket can be issued to include the free transit bus through to your destination. The Emirates bus stop in Abu Dhabi is at their office on the Corniche (NB, this is nowhere near the airport!)  You can see the schedule here .

Expect the taxi back to AUH from the Corniche to cost over 80 AED.

We’re unaware of any baggage service here, so if you want to do Abu Dhabi sightseeing before your next flight, your bags will need to come with you or return to AUH first to store your bags. You can organise a baggage transfer with Emirates for 200 AED but by this point, you may as well have paid for a metered taxi.

Abu Dhabi City skyline

How to get from AUH to DXB

And vice versa if you are flying with Etihad and leaving from Dubai, you can get the Etihad free shuttle service, leaving from  Etihad Travel Mall , in Downtown Dubai.   Click here for the current schedule .

Expect the taxi from DXB to the Etihad Travel Mall cost 40 AED.

Again no baggage storage if you want to do daytime sightseeing, other than at nearby Dubai Mall you can use their paid concierge service which we believe is 70 AED/day.

The journey in either direction, Dubai to Abu Dhabi, takes about 1 hour and 25 minutes, but for arrivals, you will likely be booked on a service at least 1 hour after your landing time.  For depatures, they will suggest catching the service listed at least 4 hours before your departure.

Neither, unfortunately, works as a well-oiled machine and conveniently drop you at each other’s airport!  If you are flying any other airline than Emirates and Etihad, you cannot get the free bus, and to get each other’s transfer services, you will still need connecting taxis or other transport.

Other Routes Between Dubai and Abu Dhabi

We have a detailed guide to Dubai and Abu Dhabi transport options here

Other more direct (but more costly) options between the two airports are:

  • Take a standard metered taxi airport to airport will cost approximately 200AED
  • Get a private hire car with a driver. These will cost a minimum of 250AED for a small local vehicle to 350AED for a seven-seater. Some services might be able to provide you with car seats.
  • It may be cheaper to hire a car, but the hassle and paperwork for a one-way trip and dealing with Dubai’s traffic after a long flight?  I’d only take this option if there are other stops outside of the big cities you want to make on the way.

The  Intercity Bus  service Dubai to Abu Dhabi is NOT direct for the airports, in fact, quite complex but we will include instructions!

Metro Train Dubai Airport

  • You would need to take get from the Dubai bus station at  Al Ghubaiba in Bur Dubai  to the bus station in  Abu Dhabi at Al Wadha .  Intercity Bus costs 25AED per person.
  • Dubai Airport to Al Ghubaiba bus station.  There is no bus station at DXB; there are only bus stops at each terminal.  From DXB Terminal 1 take bus 33 or 42; DXB Terminal 2, take bus 31. DXB Terminal 3 you can take the Metro to Burjuman, switch to the green line and get off at Al Ghubaiba Metro Station, then transfer to the bus station (You will need a pre-paid Nol card to take these services).  Or take a metered taxi.
  • In Abu Dhabi, you will need to take a local bus service to connect to AUH.  For Abu Dhabi public transport, you will need a Halifat visitor card, prepaid only no cash, available at the station.
  • From Al Wadha, you then need a local bus to Al Mushrif to catch the A1 bus to Terminal 1.  Or take a taxi, approximate cost 60AED. You can see a complete Abu Dhabi transport guide here.

When you add the inconvenience of needing pre-paid transport cards and numerous stops and transfers, it’s most definitely NOT the easiest option, especially if travelling with kids.  I’d save the public bus only for ultra-budget travellers.

A new alternative introduced in 2022 is the AUH Express Bus. If you can get yourself on the Metro all the way to Ibn Battuta, then this 24/7 shuttle bus journey will help you complete your journey to Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi for AED35 (or even cheaper if you book it online with GYG – check it out here!)

Hello. Great information. I have a question, how does the long layovers work with the current Covid situation? I will be traveling from USA to Cairo and have a 7 hour layover in Dubai. I wanted to step out of the airport to go to downtown, but will be the USA PCR test still be valid for my Cairo flight later that evening? I appreciate your feedback.

You will need to check the current terms and conditions with Emirates as the rules are constantly changing.

With its towering skyscrapers, luxurious resorts, and rich cultural heritage, Dubai has something to offer every traveler, even if you only have 12 hours to spare. Whether you’re a history buff, a shopaholic, a foodie, or an adventure seeker, this desert metropolis will leave you wanting more.

In this article, we’ll guide you on how to make the most of your Dubai stopover without breaking the bank. From exploring iconic landmarks to indulging in culinary experiences and enjoying outdoor activities, we’ll provide you with tips and recommendations to ensure a memorable and affordable layover experience in the city.

So, whether you’re transiting through Dubai on your way to another destination or simply making a pit stop, get ready to immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and flavors of this enchanting city. Let’s dive into your Dubai stopover adventure!

Preparing for your Dubai stopover

Before you embark on your Dubai stopover adventure, it’s important to do some preparation to make the most of your time in the city. Here are a few key things to consider:

  • Check visa requirements: Depending on your nationality, you may need a visa to enter Dubai. Make sure to check the visa rules and requirements well in advance and apply for the necessary visa if needed.
  • Plan your itinerary: With only 12 hours to explore Dubai, it’s crucial to plan your itinerary wisely. Identify what you want to see and do in the city, prioritize the must-visit attractions, and make a rough schedule to ensure that you don’t miss out on anything.
  • Book in advance: To save both time and money, consider booking certain activities and attractions in advance. This includes tickets to popular attractions such as the Burj Khalifa or a desert safari tour.
  • Check the weather: Dubai experiences scorching temperatures, especially during the summer months. Check the weather forecast for the day of your stopover and dress accordingly, opting for lightweight and breathable clothing.
  • Stay connected: Make sure you have a reliable internet connection while in Dubai. This will allow you to access maps, communicate with loved ones, and easily search for information on the go. Consider purchasing a local SIM card or using a portable Wi-Fi device.

By taking these steps before your Dubai stopover, you’ll be well-prepared and ready to make the most of your limited time in the city. Now, let’s move on to how to get from the airport to the city to start your Dubai adventure!

Getting from the airport to the city

Once you arrive at Dubai International Airport, there are several convenient transportation options to get you from the airport to the city center. Here are a few popular choices:

  • Taxi: Taxis are readily available outside the airport terminals and are a convenient way to get to your hotel or desired destination in Dubai. The fares are metered, and the taxis are operated by the Dubai Taxi Corporation. It’s always a good idea to have the address of your accommodation or destination written down in English or Arabic to show the driver.
  • Metro: Dubai has a well-connected metro system that runs from the airport to various parts of the city. The Red Line of the Dubai Metro serves Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 of the airport. The metro is a cost-effective and efficient way to travel, especially during peak hours when traffic can be heavy. Make sure to check the operating hours and plan your journey accordingly.
  • Public buses: The public bus network in Dubai is extensive and offers affordable transportation options. There are several bus routes that connect the airport to different parts of the city. Look for the bus stops outside the terminals and check the schedules for the relevant bus route to reach your destination.
  • Private transfers: If you prefer a more luxurious and hassle-free option, private transfers can be arranged in advance. Many hotels and travel agencies offer airport pick-up services, allowing you to relax and enjoy a comfortable ride directly to your accommodation.

It’s worth noting that Dubai International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world, so it’s important to factor in the potential for traffic congestion, especially during peak hours. Plan your transportation accordingly and allow enough time to reach your desired destination.

Now that you know how to get from the airport to the city, let’s dive into the exciting part of exploring Dubai’s iconic landmarks!

Exploring Dubai’s iconic landmarks

Dubai is renowned for its stunning architecture and iconic landmarks that showcase the city’s grandeur and ambition. While 12 hours may not be enough to visit all of them, you can still catch a glimpse of some of Dubai’s most famous landmarks. Here are a few must-see attractions:

  • Burj Khalifa: The Burj Khalifa stands as the tallest building in the world, dominating Dubai’s skyline. Take a trip to the observation deck on the 124th floor for a breathtaking panoramic view of the city. Pre-booking tickets online will save you time and ensure availability.
  • Dubai Mall: Adjacent to the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall is one of the largest shopping malls in the world. Explore its extensive retail outlets, enjoy a leisurely stroll along the aquarium, or watch the mesmerizing Dubai Fountain show, the world’s largest choreographed fountain system.
  • Palm Jumeirah: This man-made island shaped like a palm tree is an engineering marvel. Walk along the promenade, relax at the luxurious resorts, or visit Atlantis, The Palm for a unique underwater adventure at the Lost Chambers Aquarium.
  • Dubai Marina: Marvel at the futuristic skyscrapers and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Dubai Marina. Take a relaxing walk along the marina promenade or opt for a boat tour to admire the stunning skyline from the water.
  • The Dubai Frame: This architectural landmark offers a unique perspective of Dubai’s past and present. The oversized golden frame provides spectacular views of both the historic district and the modern skyline.

Remember to check the operating hours of each attraction and plan your visit accordingly. While it may not be possible to visit all these landmarks in one stopover, choose a couple that interest you the most and make sure to allocate enough time to fully enjoy them.

Now that you’ve explored some of Dubai’s iconic landmarks, let’s dive into the next section to discover the charm of traditional souks and local markets!

Visiting the Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa

Another market worth visiting is the Textile Souk, located in the historic neighborhood of Bur Dubai. Here, you’ll find a wide array of fabrics, traditional Emirati clothing, and colorful textiles. Browse through the shops and marvel at the intricate embroidery and intricate designs. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even have a custom-made garment created to your specifications.

Here you’ll find a fusion of old and new, with stalls offering everything from spices and dried fruits to traditional crafts and souvenirs. It’s the perfect place to pick up unique gifts for loved ones back home.

As you explore these traditional souks and local markets, don’t forget to engage with the local vendors and immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of Dubai. Be prepared to bargain for the best prices and have fun in the lively and bustling atmosphere.

After satisfying your taste buds, it’s time to embark on an exhilarating desert safari adventure in the golden dunes of Dubai. Let’s move on to the next section!

Taking a desert safari adventure

No visit to Dubai is complete without experiencing the thrill of a desert safari. Escape the city’s bustling streets and embark on an unforgettable adventure in the golden dunes just outside Dubai. Here’s what you can expect on a desert safari:

Start your desert safari by hopping into a 4×4 vehicle with a skilled driver who will navigate the sandy terrain with expertise. Hold on tight as you experience the exhilarating dune bashing, a thrilling ride over the undulating sand dunes that will leave you with an adrenaline rush.

As the sun sets, you’ll be taken to a traditional Bedouin-style camp where you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in Emirati culture. Enjoy an authentic Arabian welcome with dates and Arabic coffee, and if you’re feeling adventurous, try a traditional shisha pipe.

Indulge in a sumptuous buffet dinner that showcases a variety of grilled meats, aromatic rice dishes, salads, and delectable desserts. Experience the magical atmosphere as you dine under the starlit sky, serenaded by live music and captivating belly dancing performances.

In addition to dune bashing and a delicious feast, desert safaris offer a range of activities to keep you entertained. Take a camel ride through the serene desert landscape, try your hand at sandboarding as you glide down the sandy slopes, or get a henna tattoo to adorn your hands with intricate designs.

For a deeper connection to the desert, learn about falconry, a traditional sport that showcases the hunting skills of these majestic birds. Watch in awe as the falcons swoop down to catch their prey, a truly mesmerizing sight.

While desert safaris are typically conducted in the evening, you can also opt for morning or overnight safaris, each offering a unique experience. Morning safaris allow you to witness the desert’s beauty in the early morning light, while overnight safaris give you the opportunity to sleep under the stars in comfortable tents.

Remember to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the desert sun and sand. Comfortable clothing and closed shoes are also recommended for ease of movement and to protect your feet from the sand.

So, immerse yourself in the beauty of the desert, relish the cultural experiences, and create unforgettable memories on your desert safari adventure in Dubai.

Quick Tips For Your Dubai Layover

  • The citizens of 48 countries, including Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States and Germany are eligible for visas on arrival in Dubai, which will allow them to leave the airport during their layover. Indian passport holders with a valid American visa or Green Card are also eligible for a visa on arrival and can leave the airport with much ease. Make sure your country's passport allows for visa on arrival before planning your Dubai layover outing.
  • There are 3 terminals in Dubai airport. While you maybe dropped in one terminal, your transit flight maybe from the other terminal. Make sure you know which terminal your connecting flight is arriving at and reach accordingly.
  • The Dubai Airport is amongst the biggest airports in the world. Be mindful of the time it will take you to exit the airport, get through immigration ( visa on arrival), get into a cab, sit through traffic, go through security check at Burj Khalifa and all of the same for getting back. On an average it takes an hour and half to clear your way through the immigration and customs at the airport. Factor the time all of these will take and plan your layover in Dubai.
  • If you don’t want to lug your carry-on throughout the city, you can lock it up at the short-term storage facility in Dubai Airport. Note, this facility is available only in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 (it is not available in Terminal 2). It is open 24/7 and costs either AED 20 or AED 25 for every 12 hours, depending on the size of the bag.
  • Dubai traffic during peak hours can be time-consuming so its best to opt for the metro if you're planning to get to Burj Khalifa first. There are two metro stations by the Dubai Airport – Airport Terminal 1 and Airport Terminal 3. Take a round trip ticket (Red Line) to the Dubai Mall and in 30 mins you'll have traveled from the airport to Dubai Mall. The mall is connected to the metro station, so a quick 10 minute jaunt on walkalators should get you to the mall.
  • If you're planning to use the metro, know that you're only allowed to carry one large suitcase (<81cm x 58 cm x 30cm) and one piece of hand baggage (<55cm x 38cm x 20cm).If you have anything bigger, stash them away at the storage facility in the airport.
  • If you're short on time and want a quick tour of Dubai, hop onto the Red Line, sit by the window and soak in great views of Dubai's skyline including the Burj al-Khalifa, Dubai Opera House, Dubai Creek and more. If you want to step down, a good place would be at the Baniyas Square (you will have to switch to the Green Line). From here you can walk to the Dubai Creek and take an Abra if you please.
  • If you can snag a Dubai Mall Map at the entrance, nothing like it. This will help you find the attractions and shops you want to visit without wasting time.
  • Unless your layover is for over 12 hours, do not attempt a Desert Safari Experience. They are time consuming and there have been many instances of travelers not being able to reach back in time to make it for their transit flight.

Dubai Stopover: ALL the Things to Do and Know (2023)

Find out all the best tips for your Dubai stopover : Dubai International Airport (DBX) is one of the largest and busiest in the world, so it’s no surprise that Dubai is one of the best stopover cities to visit!

Whether you want to stop in Dubai for a few days, or you just have a few hours to spend waiting for the next flight to your destination, here you will find the useful tips you need to make the most of your Dubai stopover!

What you will find in this guide to the Dubai Stopover:

How to Plan your Dubai Stopover or Layover

Do i need a visa for a stopover in dubai, dubai layover tours, things to do and see in a long layover in dubai, itinerary for a 7-8 hour dubai stopover, itinerary for a 12-hour (and longer) dubai stopover, things to do in dubai airport, emirates dubai stopover, dubai airport hotels for long layover.

Dubai is a great stopover destination, as most travelers do not need a visa (you get a free visa on arrival ), the city is worth seeing even if you don’t have enough time to visit in depth, and there are great and affordable Dubai city tours from airport that make it so much easier!

This is why many travelers choose to plan a few-day stopover in Dubai , in order to enjoy the city to the full. But even those who stop just for 6 or 7 hours, what is usually called a layover , can take the chance to take a tour of the city and see its main landmarks.

If your layover is really short (less than 6 hours) it would be better not to go to see the city, because you risk missing the next flight. Dubai airport is huge, and the city too. Just to get an idea: from Dubai Airport (DBX) to Palm Jumeirah is about 30km and the roads can be busy during the day. It would really be a race against time!

If your layover lasts at least 6 hours , then you definitely shouldn’t miss a nice tour of Dubai!

If you want to leave your luggage (usually not necessary, as you can collect it directly at your destination) there are lockers in the Dubai Airport Luggage Storage , located in Terminals 1 and 3. The service costs AED 25 per bag, for 12 hours.

Dubai Stopover Guide Dubai Airport Tour

Most travelers, such as those arriving from European countries, USA, Canada, Russia, China, Japan or Australia, can benefit from the free Visa on Arrival , issued directly at the airport.

You can find all the details on the UAE Visa here , including the complete list of all nationalities eligible for Visa on Arrival .

To enter the UAE, you must have a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry, and a confirmed flight ticket for your next destination.

Dubai city tours depart daily from any airport terminal, and allow you to comfortably see all of the city’s major landmarks.

You can book your tour online , choosing the best time for you , whether it’s day or night .

1 -Day Dubai Layover Tour

A professional guide (who speaks your preferred language) will pick you up at the airport, and take you around the city, showing you all the main landmarks and telling you interesting facts about the local history and culture.

You will also take a tour of Deira , the old town of Dubai, with its famous souks, such as the Spice Souk and the Gold Souk .

Are you traveling via Dubai and have a few hours to spare at the airport and are considering a Dubai layover? If you’re flying between Asia and the Americas, you will likely be making a stop here. After flying for many years, Dubai has always been just a stopover for me but I’ve always only been familiar with the four walls of the airport. This time, I decided to venture out and extend my layover to a 2-night stay to finally explore the city! If you’re thinking of doing the same, this guide will help you plan out your Dubai layover!

In this guide, you’ll also find useful tips to help you get the most out of your stopover in this bustling metropolis. There are also some hotel suggestions for a short visit to Dubai at the end of this article.

Can you leave the Dubai airport during a layover?

The short answer is yes – there are plenty of things to do in the Dubai airport to keep you entertained. On the other hand,  if you have a long stopover in Dubai then leaving the airport is absolutely fine, as long as you have the right visa . You don’t need a visa if you’re just transiting through Dubai airport.

Do you need a visa if you have a layover in Dubai?

If you’re considering a layover in the UAE, you might need to obtain a visa to exit the airport. The good news is that getting a UAE stopover visa is simple and straightforward!

You will need a UAE Dubai transit visa, if:

  • You don’t have a passport of a country that is on the UAE visa on arrival or a visa-free entrance list. (You can visit the official website to check if you’re eligible for a visa on arrival or not).
  • You are not a citizen of the countries (GCC region) exempted from that UAE Tourist Visas.
  • Your onward flight is in the next 48 or 96 hours

Duration of the UAE Dubai Transit Visa

The UAE issues two types of single entry transit visas, visas issued for 48 and 96 hours. You have to apply for a visa prior to your arrival in the country. Note that both 48-hour AND 96-hour visas expire within 30 days of issue. Moreover, the 48-hour visa cannot be extended to 96 hours once it is issued.

How to apply for a UAE Dubai transit visa

Only the UAE based-airlines you are traveling through can arrange your transit visa prior to your journey. If your trip is through a travel agency, the agency can also help you get the visa, but all visas are routed through the airline.

So make sure to check with your airline or travel agency ahead of travel for your Dubai transit visa.

Dubai Layover Itinerary Options

6-12 hours layover in dubai , option 1 – dubai mall and burj khalifa.

emirates dubai tour layover

This itinerary is perfect if you have at least 6 hours to spare in Dubai, so you can make the best of your time.

TIP : If you have less than 6 hours in Dubai, I would suggest booking premium lounge access at the airport, as immigration can sometimes take a long time in Dubai. Add in the time waiting for transport in and out of the airport, it’s just not worth the stress of leaving the airport and rushing back in time!

Dubai is all about that boujee living: Rolls Royces and Bentleys everywhere on the street, gold flakes on your coffee, and all that jazz. So where better to immerse yourself in all that luxe than in Dubai Mall – the world’s largest destination for shopping, entertainment, and leisure, and it’s right next to the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.

Dubai Mall is only 15 minutes from the airport by car, and you can easily hail a cab or take an Uber. I took an Uber everywhere during my trip, and it was easy and convenient. Alternatively, If you’d like to save the hassle, you can book a private airport transfer in advance.

Burj Khalifa

Think Dubai and you’ll think of the Burj Khalifa – the tallest building in the world. Impressively standing at 830m tall (that’s more than half a mile!), admiring it from below feels so surreal. If you have time, I suggest also going to the top of the world’s tallest building for sweeping views of Dubai. Burj Khalifa At The Top is a very popular experience and often sold out, so I suggest booking the Burj Khalifa tickets in advance .

Dubai Fountains

emirates dubai tour layover

This is one of the best spots to admire the Burj Khalifa, and as if that wasn’t impressive enough, the Dubai Fountains light up every day with a music and light show. And since they’ve got the world’s largest mall, the world’s tallest building, why stop there? The Dubai Fountain is the world’s largest performing fountain! Best of all, it’s free .

Show schedule: Daily 6pm to 11pm (every 30 minutes); Seasonally, lunchtime performances may be added at 1:00 PM and 1:30 PM (1:30 PM & 2:00 PM weekends)

It’s nice to catch the first fountain show at dusk and then return for a nighttime show when you can also capture LED lighting displays on the Burj Khalifa from 7.45 PM.

Take note that the fountains can get incredibly crowded, especially during show times. There are a few other ways you can enjoy the music and light show:

  • Take a fountain lake ride on a traditional abra around Burj Lake
  • Walk on to the Dubai Fountain Boardwalk
  • Dine at one of the nearby restaurants with outdoor seating over the lake
  • From the top of Burj Khalifa!

It’s best to be in position around 15 minutes before the show to get a good spot.

Dubai Mall restaurants with fountain views

  • On the lower ground level try; Social House – casual international dining, Carluccios – Italian, Wafi Gourmet – Lebanese. For some quick bites, look out for Nandos, Pizza Hut, KFC .
  • Level 1 – OFK (Open Flame Kitchen) – upscale international
  • Level 2 – TGI Fridays – American dining, Tribes – casual African

Souk Al Bahar restaurants with fountain views

  • Bice Mare – Italian Seafood
  • Serafina – Italian
  • Karma Kafe – Pan Asian
  • For smaller bites, you can grab from Deluca Café and Baker & Spice

Dubai Aquarium

Dubai Aquarium is located inside the Dubai Mall itself. You can see the gigantic aquarium from the mall (and it’s free!). You can also visit the actual aquarium itself by purchasing tickets here . As with all other attractions in Dubai, I advise booking your tickets in advance as the queue can get really long at certain times, and you wouldn’t want to spend your precious time in a queue. Plus, advanced tickets are cheaper! Book your Dubai Aquarium tickets here.

TIP : If you’re planning to visit the Burj Khalifa and the Aquarium, consider purchasing this 2-in-1 ticket for Burj Khalifa and Dubai Aquarium which is much cheaper than buying them individually! Book your tickets now.

And if you’re a shopaholic like me, shopping in the world’s largest shopping mall is sort of like a pilgrimage! Don’t forget to put on your walking shoes though because this mall is seriously huge. You could easily spend a week here and still not see everything.

Option 2 – Sightseeing tour

Alternatively, if you want to have everything taken care of for you, this Dubai Layover Tour was specially designed for short layovers. You’ll be greeted at the airport by your guide and be whisked away to the land of old gold and spice souks. This private tour also includes tickets to the Top of the Burj. All you have to do is relax in your air-conditioned vehicle and see the best that Dubai has to offer, all in just 4.5 hours!

One-day Dubai layover itinerary

If you have at least one night or one full day on your Dubai layover, you can combine the visit to the Dubai Mall with one of these activities:

emirates dubai tour layover

  • Visit the Souqs . With all the glitz and glam of Dubai, sometimes it can be easy to forget how rich the old culture of Dubai is. A visit to Dubai’s famous traditional markets is a must – Spice Souq and Deira Gold Souq . Seeing all that glittering gold was definitely a huge eye-opener! I hadn’t seen such huge pieces of gold jewelry before!
  • Take a walk down the manmade beach. Jumeriah Beach is a manmade beach on the coast of Dubai where most of the uber-luxurious hotels are located. It’s definitely worth a visit to sink your feet into the soft, white sand and admire the Burj Al-Arab , the world’s only 7-star hotel often touted as the eighth wonder of the world. If you’re ready for a splurge, a one-night stay here starts from $2,000!
  • Palm Jumeirah. Just close by is the world-famous Palm Jumeirah, an archipelago of artificial islands. You’ve definitely seen aerial shots of this palm tree-shaped island! It’s certainly an experience driving through one of the spines of this island and imagining what it’s like to live like the rich and famous. If you have the budget, I highly recommend booking a night in one of the hotels here , as it is truly a unique experience.
  • Dubai Marina . Dubai Marina is an upscale residential area, known for The Beach at JBR. This leisure complex offers outdoor dining and a relaxing sandy beach. The waterfront of Dubai Marina Walk is lined with hip cafés and pop-up craft markets, while the Dubai Marina Mall is lined with chain stores and high-end fashion brands. Luxury yachts cruise a man-made marina, where activities such as jet skiing and skydiving are available. It’s especially lively in the evening, and taking a sunset dinner cruise for spectacular views is the best way to enjoy the marina.

emirates dubai tour layover

Two-day Dubai layover

If you have two days on your Dubai layover just like we did, I suggest spending one day doing the activities I suggested above, and for your second day, venturing a little further out of the city for more fun experiences!

Go on a Dubai desert safari

emirates dubai tour layover

Going on a Dubai desert safari was definitely the highlight of my Dubai trip! You get picked up after lunchtime in a 4×4 and are transported to the sand dunes of Dubai, where you’ll get to experience some exhilarating dune bashing! If you’re a thrill seeker, I suggest taking the front seat to see all the plunges down the sand dunes!

emirates dubai tour layover

You’ll also get to try some sandboarding! In the evening, you’ll take a camel ride into the sunset. As it gets dark, you’ll proceed to the Bedouin campsite where you can sip some Arabic coffee and munch on sweet dates. You’ll be entertained by spectacular belly dancing and tanoura dancing performances as well as an awesome fire show. I thought they would be very touristy, but they actually put on a really fun show! There was also a huge BBQ dinner, and I was impressed by the quality of the food. You’ll also get to try sheesha smoking and Henna painting.

emirates dubai tour layover

And of course, cap off this wonderful evening by gazing at the star-spangled sky.

I highly recommend including this in your itinerary for an unforgettable experience. Book your Dubai desert safari here!

Take a day trip to Abu Dhabi

If I had another day in Dubai, I would definitely have loved to visit Abu Dhabi . It’s only a 1.5 hour drive away so it’s easily done in a day. Admire the immense opulence of the iconic Grand Sheikh Zayed Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world and visit the Heritage Village and get a glimpse into the traditional Bedouin way of life. The easiest way is to book a full-day tour where you’ll get picked up right at your hotel, and dropped back after – completely hassle-free!

Where to stay on your Dubai layover

Dubai is an expensive city, and hotels are no different, but there are still affordable options for your Dubai layover. I recommend staying close to the Dubai Mall so you’re close to food and entertainment options on your short layover. We stayed at an Airbnb close enough for us to walk to Dubai Mall. Here are some options for your stay:

  • DAMAC Maison Dubai Mall Street (4⭐)
  • Ramada Downtown Dubai (4⭐)
  • The Dubai EDITION (6⭐)
  • Address Boulevard (5⭐)
  • Address Dubai Mall (5⭐)

Dubai is a city to splurge in, so if you’re prepared for that, here are some luxurious hotels to spoil yourself in:

  • Burj Al Arab (7⭐ ) – The Burj al Arab Hotel or “Tower of the Arabs,” is said to be the world’s only 7-star hotel (!) , and is presently the third tallest hotel in the world. Prices start from $1,524 per night

  • Marriott Resort Palm Jumeirah (5⭐) Prices start from $301 per night
  • Atlantis, The Palm (5⭐) You’ve probably seen these unique hotel rooms at the Atlantis which feature immense floor-to-ceiling windows into a 65,000 marine animal aquarium, so you’ll wake up with the stunning views of the aquarium right from your bed. Prices start from $834 per night (for normal rooms) and $7,000 per night for the underwater suites (wowza!)

And if you’re a fashionista, I highly recommend staying in these hotels designed by some of the world’s biggest luxury fashion houses.

  • Palazzo Versace Dubai (5⭐) – Every single piece of furniture and fabric that adorns the hotel’s 215 hotel rooms and suites, and 169 residences, is designed and tailor-made by the House of Versace exclusively for the Palazzo Versace Hotel in Dubai. Prices start from $260 per night

Staying Connected with a Dubai SIM Card

emirates dubai tour layover

These days, it’s unheard of to be without a data connection when out and about. And what’s better than a FREE SIM card? Luckily in Dubai, you get a SIM card for free! You can collect your free SIM card at Dubai Airport’s passport control. Once you get your passport stamped, you will get your passport back along with a free Du Dubai SIM card. Just pop it into your phone and enjoy 1 GB of free data for 24 hours.

After 24 hours, you will have to top up to use the sim card, but at least that’s better than nothing! Especially if you’re only traveling for less than 24 hours.

Note : If you go through the automated passport scanner at customs, you won’t be handed a free SIM card! You will have to go to a booth with an officer to get your free Dubai SIM card.

Alternatively, if you don’t want the hassle of changing SIM cards, you can download the Airalo app , purchase a package, and get connected instantly! This is my favorite way to stay connected as it saves all the hassle of buying a SIM card and messing about with these tiny SIMs. PLUS, you can purchase the package in advance and get connected instantly even when you’re still on the plane! Find out more about Airalo.

So there you have it! I hope you’ve found some ideas for the best things to do on your short layover in Dubai. If you have any more suggestions or things I’ve missed out, please let me know in the comments below! Enjoy your trip!

MY TOP TRAVEL TIPS & RESOURCES

Here are my top travel tips and resources to help you save money and plan your trips effectively! If you're looking for more tips, head over to my travel tips resource page or my comprehensive guide on trip planning .

  • Booking Flights: When it comes to finding great flight deals, I always start my search on Google Flights or Skyscanner . To save some cash, consider flying mid-week or on the weekends, opt for carry-on only with budget airlines, and be open to red-eye or early morning flights. Check out my in-depth guide on how I find the cheapest flights .
  • Accommodations : I'm a stickler for finding the absolute best deals on my stays, so I will obsessively oscillate between a few booking sites: Booking . com (in general) and Agoda (for Asian destinations). When it comes to vacation rentals, there's Airbnb or VRBO .
  • Travel Insurance : It's always a wise decision to purchase travel insurance for international trips. I can't stress this enough - it's highly recommended! For international travel insurance, I suggest considering World Nomads or SafetyWing . SafetyWing , in particular, stands out as one of the few policies that cover Covid-19. They also offer excellent monthly policies that are perfect for digital nomads and long-term travelers!
  • Travel Credit Card : My go-to travel credit card for booking trips is the Wise travel card. I love that there are no foreign transaction fees, so I can pay like a local and never get any surprises at the end of my trip. You can also withdraw cash from the ATMs wherever you are. With  Wise , you are always guaranteed the best exchange rate, and I have saved  sooo  much money just by using this card. Most of the time, I get charged the exchange rate I see on Google, plus or minus a few cents.
  • Tours: Most times, I prefer traveling independently but sometimes, getting a guide and a local's perspective makes the experience all the more enriching. When it comes to tour bookings, I trust Viator and GetYourGuide to provide me with excellent options. In Asia, I choose Klook as they are the biggest provider in the region. Plus, you can often get entrance tickets and discounted prices!
  • Transportation : To navigate through public transit options and plan my journeys from one place to another, I rely on Rome2Rio. When it comes to rental cars, I compare rental companies and find the best deals through DiscoverCars .
  • Connection : It's essential to me to have seamless connectivity wherever I go. I need it to navigate to new places, Google what's around me, and keep in touch with my loved ones. But fumbling around with multiple SIMs has always been a nightmare, which is why I choose Airalo when I travel. No more switching SIMs, just purchase a plan on your phone, on the go, anywhere, and stay connected.
  • Luggage Storage : Whenever I need to check out early or take advantage of a long layover, I securely store my luggage with LuggageHero . It's a reliable service that allows me to roam around freely. As a bonus, you can use this link to enjoy your first hour of FREE luggage storage on me!
  • What to Pack : I always have packing anxiety once I've left home— you know the phantom feeling that you've forgotten something even though you've checked 372836 times . So I made my own packing list and use it religiously before every trip, and by religious I mean I tick off that list at least 7 times before I zip up my bag. Check out my in-depth packing list here.

Emirates Encouraging Longer Layovers With Free Overnight Stays in Dubai

Emirates' Dubai Connect package is back and better than ever.

emirates dubai tour layover

Emirates wants you to disembark for a little bit longer in Dubai . So, it’s helping you do just that by re-launching its Dubai Connect offer, which gives guests a complimentary hotel stay so they can experience the city for a few extra hours.

Those transiting through its hub in Dubai can take advantage of the free hotel stay when their connection time exceeds 10 hours.

“With Dubai Connect, Emirates passengers will receive a complimentary night’s stay in a four or five-star hotel, ground transfers to and from the airport, meals at the hotel as well as UAE visa on arrival where required,” the airline explained in its announcement. “The service aims to provide customers whose best connection time is between 10 and 24 hours, a more convenient travel journey.”

As the airline also noted, Dubai is indeed still open to visitors , including its beaches, heritage sites, shopping, dining, and more. This means guests utilizing the longer layover can not only have a place to sleep during the stay but can also leave the hotel to explore more of what Dubai has to offer. (Just don’t forget a mask — no matter where you are in the world.)

“Dubai Connect is part of Emirates’ continued investment in product and service to provide an unmatched travel experience,” the airline added. “In the last month, the airline has introduced other services including self-check-in and bag drop kiosks at Dubai International Airport and onboard enhancements for a more seamless journey.”

Of course, this isn’t the only new offer from the airline. It also announced, as of Dec. 1, 2020, all passengers flying with Emirates “can travel with confidence and extra peace of mind with the airline’s industry first, multi-risk travel insurance and COVID-19 cover.”

The coverage comes at no extra cost and also comes with provisions for personal accidents during travel, winter sports cover, loss of personal belongings, and trip disruptions due to unexpected air space closure. This way, you can book a longer layover or delay your plans until you feel ready to travel and see Dubai to its fullest.

See more about the free layover stay, the airline’s new travel insurance, as well as its new health and safety rules here .

What to do during an overnight layover in Dubai: A review of our night tour of Dubai

August 8, 2018 by Karen Turner 11 Comments

Sometimes, you find an amazing flight for a very cheap price, however there’s something off about it.  This happened when I was heading to Borneo last year.  After realizing that we had a 10 hour layover at the Dubai International Airport while flying Emirates  economy , I ended up looking into nights tours in Dubai as it was my first time in the U.A.E.  This post is about my experience doing an overnight layover in Dubai and what to expect in terms of the airport/leaving the airport!

  • 0.1 Something important to know about layovers in Dubai with Emirates
  • 1 If you’re more interested in sleeping…
  • 2 Our layover tour
  • 3 Our night tour experience
  • 4 Have you done an overnight layover in Dubai? Would you do an night tour of Dubai?

Something important to know about layovers in Dubai with Emirates

The Atlantis Hotel in Dubai lit up at night. This hotel in Dubai one of the most luxurious hotels in the world. #travel #dubai

You have more options if you’re flying with Emirates. Emirates offers something called Dubai Connect , which includes accommodation, meals, and ground transportation if you qualify and it might be worthwhile to ensure that your connection does.  Contact Emirates to ask in advance!

If you’re flying first class or business class with Emirates with a bad connection in Dubai where you must wait more than six hours, but less than twenty four hours, you can ask about Dubai Connect at least a few days ahead.    For economy passengers, it is a transit time of more than eight hours and less than twenty four hours to qualify for Dubai Connect, if you do.

emirates dubai tour layover

I called, however I did not qualify because I bought the cheapest flight option. The next non-cheapest flight option would have qualified and probably saved us money. You should definitely consider leaving the airport even if you don’t qualify for Dubai Connect.

If you’re more interested in sleeping…

We initially were a bit uncertain about staying up all night during our layover, however hotel prices near the Dubai Airport were more expensive than I had anticipated, especially given that we waited a while to look into the layover.  If you prefer to sleep during the layover, book your hotel in advance.

Our layover tour

Dubai Marina at night, one of the best things to see during a layover in Dubai at night. #dubai #UAE #travel

My plan was never to take an overnight tour of Dubai. I realize that I’m a travel blogger, but travel bloggers mess up too. After finding a cheap flight to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam via Dubai, I was so very excited and booked it not reading the layover times properly… I thought our layover was between 1pm and 11:30pm.  That said, I was very wrong and I did my best to see Dubai given that my mistake made it harder to find available tours in Dubai who worked overnight.

We arrived around 1am Dubai time and our flight left at 11:30am.  As a result, we wanted to use our time to see a little of Dubai.  I ended up deciding to book a private five hour tour after double checking if they’d pick us up from the airport and if it was okay if it started at two in the morning.  We gave our flight details to the tour who told us that they’d meet us at a specific point in the airport.   I strongly recommend taking out some extra money to tip your drivers!

Check prices for a layover tour in Dubai!

As our bags were to be transported to our final destination, we just had two backpacks that we brought on board with us.  As this was a long flight with a decent sized layover, I’d recommend bringing a change of clothes and some toiletries to stay refreshed.  Passport control was a cakewalk and moved very quickly.   After this, we found our tour guide.

Our night tour experience

Luxury hotel Burj Al Arab by night, one of the best things to see in Dubai during a night layover! #travel #Dubai #UAE

It was really cool having a private tour.  Our guides were from other countries and it was interesting to learn about their experiences working in Dubai.  Both were incredibly well versed in Dubai history as well as the latest developments in Dubai.

As someone who was apprehensive about visiting Dubai, it was a bit grounding to have the chance to discuss their experiences living in the U.A.E.   I had not realized that becoming an Emirati citizen was so difficult for those from other countries.

Dubai is a fascinating place and it’s truly the future of metropolises. I was blown away by the experiments involving transportation as well as architectural features. I’m admittedly not much of one for big flashy cities, but a short layover of three hours in Dubai was just the right amount of time to soak in a little of Dubai’s hypermodern progress.

For those who aren’t aware, Dubai was a smaller city that thrived off fishing and pearls.  With the collapse of the pearl market, their Sheikh invited traders to live in Dubai tax-free, which started Dubai’s economy up.  Only in 1966, oil was discovered–and everything changed.   Now, Dubai is one of the most modern cities in the world, but you can still get a glimpse of its old city if you can ignore the giant skyscrapers that surround it.

Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, at night. Read what it's like to tour Dubai at night! #travel #dubai #UAE

Our tour included driving around in an air-conditioned car and stopping at a great photo point for the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world.  From the top, you can get a panoramic view of Dubai from 828 meters up!

If you have a longer layover or arrive a bit earlier, you might be able to visit the Burj Khalifa for the sunset or night views as it closes quite late.

Afterwards, we drove along the city center prior to viewing Burj Al-Arab, one of the major landmarks of Dubai.  Most impressive of all was Palm Jumeirah, a series of artificial islands built in a palm shape, which is the world’s largest artificial island.  Learning about the construction of this impressive island was the reason why I wanted to visit Dubai.

Man enjoying the view of the Dubai Marina at night, one of the things to see during your layover in Dubai. #dubai #travel #UAE

Lastly, we stopped off at the Dubai Marina where we got a coffee and a snack while our guides waited.  Others around us were busy enjoying hookah, but it was nice to have a moment just to soak in the atmosphere.

After we got back to the airport, in good time, we breezed through security and passport control prior to enjoying the lavish facilities of the Dubai Airport.  Our terminal had numerous options for healthy food, drinks, and souvenirs.  Although we didn’t sleep, we slept well once we got on the plain to Kuala Lumpur prior to flying onwards onto Borneo .

Very excited about the overnight tour. We have a 9 hour layover overnight and we are considering the tour. I do have a question about the tip. Is it possible to exchange money in the airport 24 hours a day so that I can tip the driver?

I found an ATM in the airport for a bit of cash. 🙂

Great! So glad you suggested this option. I am seriously considering this since we did not qualify for the Emirates Dubai Connect. We have a 9 hour layover which begins at 11:30pm.

The Pilot Who Explores

The Pilot Who Explores

Travel the world like an Airline Pilot.

Dubai Int’l Airport (DXB): The Ultimate 4-7 Hour Layover Guide (by a Pilot)

Named the world’s busiest in 2023 for international passengers, Dubai International Airport (DXB) is a beautiful mega-hub uniting all corners of the world. And that probably means you’re going to have a 4 hour or longer layover here at some point.

But fret not. You won’t get bored at DXB Airport. Not on my watch.

Dubai International Airport is a lovely place to transit, and just like in the city, you’ll find everything you need for a wonderful layover. From excellent lounges ( even if flying in economy class ) to in-transit hotels to world-class dining, there’s something for everyone – whether you want to eat, sleep, work, or simply relax.

Compared to many of my other favorite layovers , Dubai is simply the best. Here’s why.

What is there to do inside Dubai International Airport on a layover?

  • Find a spectacular airport lounge to unwind, dine, relax, and enjoy
  • Shop until you drop – everything from duty-free to high end cosmetics
  • Eat some of Dubai’s finest international cuisine
  • Go for a long walk – my personal favorite (and healthiest layover activity)
  • Get your game on – with top-of-the-line gaming systems inside the airport!
  • Catch up on much needed sleep – from pods to hotels, all in the transit area !

Dubai International Airport: The 10 Ultimate Ways to Enjoy Your Layover Here

From world class lounges to the finest international fare you can find in an airport, a layover inside Dubai International Airport won’t just be great – it’s enthralling .

So if you’re transiting Dubai and you don’t want to leave the airport, there’s more than enough to do on a layover, even if you have 4 hours or more here.

1. Find the best airport lounge Dubai has to offer

Most airports these days have lounges, some more than others , but none have so many good ones. At DXB Airport, the problem isn’t finding a lounge; it’s choosing one.

Some offer pay-for-entry regardless of membership status or fare class, others are complimentary for PriorityPass members (as low as $64/year) then there’s the extravagant business and First Class Emirates lounges – an experience worth the extra ticket cost alone.

PriorityPass Lounges – totally worth it at DXB Airport

One of my favorite travel hacks as an Airline Pilot traveling the world is having Priority Pass membership , which includes complimentary lounge access at almost every international airport around the world. at DXB, it even includes free use of sleep pods . I use my membership practically every month.

At Dubai Airport, the PriorityPass Lounges are absolutely stupendous, and available in all of the terminals. So if you’re looking forward to a long layover at DXB, you should definitely consider signing up.

In fact, you can read about my Emirates lounge experience flying business class and how I actually preferred the PriorityPass lounge and regretted the Emirates one!

Here are the lounges you get complimentary access to with PriorityPass at Dubai:

Marhaba Lounges (Terminals 1, 2, and 3)

With locations in Terminal 1 (D), Terminal 2, Terminal 3 Gates (3 locations: A2/A3, B21, and C21/C23), the Marhaba Lounge is the centerpiece of Dubai Airport lounges. Large, offering decent amenities, and buffet-style food plus coffee, the Marhaba Lounge is often the most convenient one you can visit while transiting DXB Airport.

Pay-for-entry is also available, around $48USD.

Ahlan Business Lounges (Terminals 1 and 3)

Second to the Marhaba Lounges only in number, the Ahlan Lounges are oftentimes less crowded and more welcoming. You can find one in Terminal 1 (D) and Terminal 3 (2 locations: A1 & B26).

Pay-for-entry is also available, around $55USD.

The Galley (T3, near B9)

The Galley at DXB Airport is more of a restaurant offering buffet-style food and seating than a lounge, but I’d be remiss not to include it. The food here is excellent. There’s only one The Galley, and it’s in Terminal 3 near B9.

SkyTeam Lounge (T1 D)

Last but not least, the SkyTeam Lounge is the nicest PriorityPass complimentary lounge in Terminal 1. A grand buffet, excellent wine options, showers, make this my favorite lounge in Terminal 1.

Other Lounges at Dubai Airport You Can Pay to Enter

You don’t have to be a PriorityPass or LoungeKey member to enjoy Dubai’s most spectacular airport lounges. Whether you’re a a frequent flier, flying in a higher fare class, or ready to pay for entry, these excellent lounges offer an excellent way to enjoy your next layover at DXB Airport.

Terminal 1:

  • Lufthansa Senator Lounge (business class passengers only)
  • British Airways Galleries Lounge and Concorde Bar (reserved for business class or Executive Club Silver or Gold status)
  • The Ahlan First Class Lounge (Book your visit here .)
  • Gulf Air Lounge ( Prepaid lounge access  must be purchased at least 25 hours prior the departure time .)

Terminal 2:

  • flydubai Business Class Lounge T2 (reserved for FlyDubai business class passengers)

Terminal 3:

  • Emirates First Class Lounges (reserved for Emirates first class passengers)
  • Emirates Business Class Lounges (reserved for Emirates business class passengers)
  • Plaza Premium Lounge (A Gates, Pay for entry: $54)
  • Lounge @ B (Near B26, Pay for entry: $55)

2. Enjoy Incredible Airport Shopping At Dubai International (DXB)

From duty-free to perfumes and high-end cosmetics, any shopping aficionado will find more than enough to fill up even a 7 hour layover at Dubai with shopping. Heck, if you want, you can even pick up some last-minute groceries on your way home or pharmaceuticals. Whatever you need, Dubai international Airport has it.

And the best part – you can buy so many excellent products tax free !

From high-end fragrances to smart watches, there’s a lot of tax-free shopping to take advantage of on a layover in Dubai. You can even pick up a new phone or a high-end camera.

Brands range from Bulgari and Chanel to Carolina Herrera and H&M. It’s like a mall!

You can even pick up souvenirs like toy camels, ornaments, Aladdin lamps, and low pots.

On you way home? Why not get ahead of schedule by heading to the Dubai Airport Spinney’s? It’s at T1 in Arrivals, outside security.

High-end shopping

Feeling like a baller? Look no further than Dubai Airport. You can find Bvlgari, Cartier, Tiffany & Co, and even Rolex here. If that’s not enough, 16 and 24 carat gold bars are available for purchase in either Terminal 1 or 3.

By the way, if you are buying an extra gold bar, I am willing to accept donations. Thank you. 😉

3. Feast on Dubai’s Famous International Cuisine

There’s so much to delight your palette inside Dubai International Airport, your problem may be deciding what to eat.

With endless choices of cuisine from all around the world, there’s a little something for any craving. But just in case you’re undecided, here’s a good summary to help you out:

The Two Best Overall Restaurants at DXB Airport

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Daily DXB (@thedaily.dxb)

If you’re undecided on what you want to get and would like a sit-down restaurant experience, these two top restaurants in DXB airport will make you forget that you’re only transiting.

  • The Daily DXB Urban Street Food (T3 B) – try the Biryani, you won’t regret it
  • Jack’s Bar & Grill (T3 A) – awesome breakfast, amazing burgers, excellent American-style food

Best Breakfast Options

These cafes and restaurants offer excellent breakfast, coffee, pastries, sandwiches, and more right inside the airport.

  • Tanzeet DXB (T3) – have a milkshake
  • Paul (T3 C) – excellent bakery and good coffee
  • GET YOUR FIX (T3) – great pastries and coffee

Yummiest Coffee at DXB Airport

View this post on Instagram A post shared by DXB Dubai International Airport (@dxb)

If you’re like me, delicious coffee just makes things more enjoyable – even long layovers stuck inside an airport. These are my go-to options for coffee at DXB airport.

  • S34 (T3 C) – wraps, sandwiches, and amazing coffee
  • Costa (several locations) – good chain coffee

Tastiest Pizza

Craving some tasty pizza at DXB? Head to Flour + Stone in Terminal 3 A gates.

By the way, they also offer good coffee!

Most Elegant Wine Bar

If you’re thinking you can’t have excellent wine and beer in the Middle East, you’d be mistaken. Bottega Prosecco Bar & Craft beer in Terminal 3, A-gates of DXB airport is the ultimate place to sip some bubbly and have a good time on a DXB layover.

Health Food & Juices

My absolute go-to for fresh fruit smoothies, bowls, and other health foods at DXB is Treehouse Juicery , with two convenient locations (T3 A & C).

The only downside is that the prices are quite high. But you get what you pay for.

Sweetest Desserts

A Nutella Cafe at an airport? How crazy is that? For the best desserts at DXB, head to one of these:

  • Nutella Cafe (T3 Arrivals – outside security)
  • M&M confectionery store (T3) – awesome for kids!

Most Delicious Pasta

Though you can’t go wrong with any options at The Kitchen by Wolfgang Puck (Terminal 1), the pasta is particularly delicious here.

Awesome Won Ton & Noodles

Craving delicious Chinese food? Make your way to Gao Gao , inside the Dubai International Transit Hotel (Terminal 3).

4. Stretch your legs by going on a fun walk across the terminal

Walking is one of my top ways to stay healthy and fit while traveling full-time.

With more than 1,713,000 square feet  of space, Dubai’s Terminal 3 is the second largest building in the world . That’s a lot of room to stretch your legs and go for a walk.

Try out the different sections. Between A and B, you need to take a connection train, but from B to C is walkable.

Just make sure not to get lost!

5. Discover GameSpace – the Dubai Airport Gaming Lounge that’s included with Priority Pass

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Game Space (@gamespace_dxb)

I love the motto of Game Space. They say “turn Wait time into Game time.” I think that’s a great way to sum it up.

Known as the “focal point for pleasure seekers of all ages and gaming experience”, Game Space offers 40 high-end Gaming Stations equipped with low-latency, high bandwidth internet, monitors, and premium headphones.

The best part? You can get 1 hour of gaming free with PriorityPass . That’s right!

6. Catch up on much-needed sleep with convenient pods and rooms at Dubai International Airport

One of my favorite things about Dubai is its convenience. I can hardly say there’s a place in the world where anything you desire is so easily accessible.

Likewise, Dubai International Airport is super convenient for sleeping. Whatever your budget, you can find it. I’d consider DXB Airport as having 3 tiers of sleeping arrangements available:

1. Recliner style chairs (OK if you’re a heavy sleeper)

You can easily find all around the airport in Rest Zones. During quiet hours and at night, these are great, but during the day and busy times, they may not be available and noisiness and light can be an issue.

Brings excellent earplugs and a strong eye mask (these are my favorite as a pilot traveling the world ), plus a sweater for the air conditioned cold air.

2. Sleep pods (Very good)

View this post on Instagram A post shared by sleep ’n fly (@sleepnfly)

Sleep pods are such a gem for catching solid sleep. At DXB, they are available in Terminals 1 and 3, and I consider these a great option – especially if you only have a couple hours to sleep. Plus, you can get an hour free using PriorityPass. Starting to see the value yet?

Sleep n’ Fly Lounge (T1 & T3) : Minimum 2 hours, rates vary and are discounted for PriorityPass members

SnoozeCube (T1): Minimum 2 hours, about 75AED/hr/cube, only 13 cubes so it sells out quick!

3. Transit Hotels (Best)

Located in Terminals 1 and 3, the International Transit Hotel will provide you the best and most ample sleep opportunity, at the highest cost. But if you have a long overnight layover, I’d consider it.

Dubai International Hotel in T3, transit area, is available for 6, 12, or 18 hour blocks.

If you have layover over 10 hours in DXB and want to stay in a hotel at a discount (compared to the Transit Hotel), these hotels offer both day rooms and cheap overnight rooms in the vicinity of the airport:

7. Grab an awesome layover workout and sauna at the G-Force Health Club

Did you that Dubai International Airport offers a swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room, and gym? Located at G-Force, Airside, behind the Dubai International Hotel, the Health Club offers hourly packages to have a mini-vacation as you transit DXB. Pretty awesome deal.

You can access the Health Club via Terminal 1, Gate 115 and Terminal 3, Concourse 2 (above the Emirates Business & First Class lounges). Services include:

  • Nautilus Gym – AED 45
  • Shower – AED45
  • Gym & Shower Package – AED 70
  • Steam Room, Sauna, Jacuzzi, Relaxation Pool – AED 55 each
  • Relaxation Pool + Jacuzzi – AED 85
  • Gym, Shower, Jacuzzi – AED 90

( Prices may not be updated )

8. Refresh yourself with a free shower

I don’t know about you, but I certainly feel grimy and stinky most times after a long international flight. A shower is often what I most look forward to after arrival.

Lucky for you, DXB offers free shower facilities at the following locations:

  • Terminal 3, between Gates B13 and B19
  • Terminal 3, between Gates C18 and C22.

You can also access paid showers at the Health Club and BeRelaxSpa.

9. Unwind with a fantastic massage and other spa services

Traveling is stressful – let’s not pretend it isn’t. But there’s nothing like a wonderful massage, some aromatherapy, or even cryogenics to undo the toll of travel.

You have many excellent options at DXB for massages and other spa services, including:

  • Timeless Spa (T3) – 20% off for PriorityPass members
  • G-Force Health Club (T1 & T3)
  • Be Relax Spa (T1 & T3)
  • O2 Spa & Salon (T3)
  • XpresSpa (T3)

10. Breathe in the freshest airport air in existence at the DXB Zen Gardens

Between B7 and B27, the Zen Gardens is a little secret haven with a fish pond, lush vegetation, and benches

It’s a great place to relax, read a book, or even fall asleep to the relaxing sound of water flowing.

The Best Day Room Hotels Around Dubai International Airport

If you’re in that in-between amount of time on your layover (say 3-6 hours) where you want to go out, but you don’t want to go too far, consider booking one a day room at one of these top hotels.

The hotels around Dubai International Airport are much cheaper than the transit International Hotel, and there’s actually quite a lot to do in the area if you do decide to venture out.

The Absolute Best Dubai Airport Day Room Deal: The Grand Mercure

With Rooms starting as low as $68 for the day, the Grand Mercure’s 5-star luxury amenities at superbly discounted prices makes this hotel a gem. And its location right next to the airport sweetens the deal even further.

A great taste of Dubai close to the airport: The Pullman Dubai Creek City Centre

The Pullman is a great and affordable 5-star hotel perfect if you want to get a nap, shower, and still hit the road on your Dubai layover. The Creek is known as Dubai’s “historic” center, and is a beautiful area to explore in a hurry.

The most affordable Day Room in Dubai: The ibis Deira Centre

As day rooms start in the low $30s USD for a totally adequate room, the ibis Deira Centre hotel has often been my go to if I only have a couple hours to nap and shower. There’s a complimentary airport shuttle , and it’s also located next to a Metro station with access all over the city.

Awesome: Exploring Dubai and the Surrounding Area on Your Next DXB Airport Layover

In the last few decades, Dubai has emerged from a small fishing village to a world-class megapolis. And while the city has an incredible amount to offer – far more than you could cover in just one layover – there is a surprising amount of nature here too.

And if you’re worried about fitting a visit to this city of dreams on a layover without missing your next flight, fret not. There are tailor-made tours available to make sure you make it back on time.

But even if you don’t feel like joining an organized tour, super efficient public transportation, ample taxis and ride shares, and a staggering roadway complex make getting around easy. Heck, you can even get from the airport to the far side of Dubai in just over 30 minutes most of the time.

So here’s the ultimate guide to exploring Dubai and its surroundings on your next 5-7+ hour DXB layover.

Luggage Storage & Lockers

If you’re keen on heading out (I definitely would be!), you might be wondering just where at Dubai International Airport you can hold your luggage. Luckily, short term baggage storage is available in two terminals:

  • Terminal 1 (Arrivals – near RTA Taxi Area)
  • Terminal 3 (Arrivals – near Baby Changing area/washrooms).

Rates start from AED 40 – 50 ($11-13, depending on the baggage size) for 12 hours.

Immigrations, Customs, and Security: How long does it take?

Want to leave the airport on your next Dubai layover? I almost always do.

You might be wondering how much time you need to allot to exit and return.

Dubai Airport is one of the most efficient in the world. From arriving at the gate to exiting the airport typically takes 25-40 minutes at most, including getting off the airplane, taking a people mover (train) to the immigrations area, passing immigrations and customs, and retrieving your baggage. It’s incredible.

Likewise, even at peak times, it usually only takes 15 minutes to get through security on your way out. It can take much longer if you need to check in a bag, however. But as you are transiting, you shouldn’t need to. Just make sure to have your next boarding pass available (either digitally or printed) so you can head straight to security and outbounds immigrations on your way to your connecting flight.

I recommend returning to the airport an hour and a half prior to your next flight, assuming you aren’t checking in bags. Note that this also assumes you don’t need a visa to enter the UAE.

Where to go

1. dubai city walk.

Stretch your legs, get some sun, and enjoy the best Downtown Dubai has to offer at City Walk . From chic shops to gorgeous hotels and fantastic restaurants, there’s something for everyone.

The most impressive part – in my opinion – is just how clean it is . There’s a recent TikTok trend of people walking around in just socks. After a hike around the City Walk, the socks still look fresh!

By metro, take the Red line to the Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall stop.

2. Burj Khalifa

While you’re in Downtown Dubai, why not visit the tallest building in the world ?

There are several packages to choose from, and you can easily go over 160 floors high – with sweeping views over Dubai – especially incredible at sunset.

Make sure to reserve your tickets ahead of time to make sure you don’t miss it!

3. Dubai Mall

Even if you’re not into shopping, visiting the Dubai Mall is worth it if only to fathom its unbelievable size. As the largest Mall in the world , the Dubai Mall is packed with luxury shopping, movie theaters, an aquarium, and even a zoo!

One thing is for certain – you won’t run out of things to do here.

4. The Dubai Creek

Known as the ‘Old Town’ of Dubai, the Creek is a lovely canal side commercial hub offering traditional boat rides. It’s as close to Venice as Dubai gets.

Best part is that the Dubai Creek is super close to the airport! Perfect for a shorter layover – especially if you book a day room at the Pullman 5-Star City Creek Hotel .

You can also enjoy some golfing, lovely views, and absolutely delicious breakfast at the Dubai Golf Club – one of my secret favorites (I don’t even play golf!)

5. JBR Beach & Dubai Marina (also skydiving)

My favorite place to walk in Dubai is easily the Dubai Marina and JBR Beach . There are miles of walkways lining the marina, beach, and man-made islands. I’ve been to Dubai 6 times and I still haven’t walked the entire perimeter.

Here you’ll also find many of the best restaurants and cafes in all of Dubai, the most charming nightlife, and an exceptional Promenade perfect for sunsets.

6. Go shopping at the Gold Souk

If you’re looking for the highest quality gold, look no further. Dubai’s Gold Souk will knock your socks off. And whatever gold you buy – the extra weight you wear will be offset by the lost weight of your wallet.

7. Burj Al Arab

As Dubai’s most iconic hotel and the “only seven-star hotel ” in the world (just a myth), Burj Al Arab dominates the Dubai skyline.

Even if you don’t plan to spend the $1000+ per night it takes to stay here, you can book a tour and explore the highlights.

Pro Tip: book the sunset tour for amazing pictures over the Palm!

8. Dubai Frame

Not only a beautiful display of Dubai both new and old, the Dubai Frame is an architectural piece of art and a fun place to get a great glimpse over Dubai – including the Burj Khalifa. And it’s not very far from Dubai airport .

You can book a tour that includes private transport to and from the airport .

The Top 6 Best Dubai Tours from DXB International Airport

From dune bashing to exhilarating jet ski tours, you’d be surprised just what you can accomplish in one layover at Dubai. With organized tours and flexible pickup, you can easily squeeze in an unforgettable Dubai experience even if you only have a couple of hours to spare .

Here are the top 5 tours you should experience on your next 7+ hour layovers at Dubai International Airport.

1. Ride ATV Quads across the Red Dunes , Go Sandsurfing, and Enjoy the Stars

The Ultimate Dubai Tour : dune bashing in a luxury 4×4, an epic quad bike ride, sandboarding, and learning how to ride on a camel. All followed by a gorgeous desert sunset.

This tour is the #1 tour in Dubai, and should be reserved only for a longer (7+ hour) layover. You can select either a 4 or 7 hour tour, plus 45 minutes driving time each way.

It’s totally worth it. Check out the 4.9/5 star reviews here !

2. Go on a jet ski tour of Dubai : the Marina, Burj al Arab, the Palm, and the Burj Khalifa

If you’re looking for both adrenaline and discovery, look no further. This incredible jet ski tour lets you explore Dubai’s highlights, while having a ton of fun.

It’s recommended by 98% of travelers who’ve done it, so you’ll definitely have a blast !

3. See the skyline – including the Burj Khalifa – from a helicopter ride

I’ve been a fan of helicopter rides since I went on a helicopter tour of the NYC skyline on a layover 3 years ago.

But there’s one big difference between the NYC Heli tours and the ones in Dubai – the price . Starting at only $189 , Dubai Helicopter tours are an absolute the steal – and a fantastic way to see the city in all its glamour in record time.

From the air, you’ll see the Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa, Palm Jumeirah, Cruise Terminal, and Old Souk!

4. Cruise on a super yacht with live music and drinks

Cruising in style on beautiful blue Dubai waters is the epitome of the lifestyle here.

A best seller, and starting at just shy of $50 per person , this super yacht cruise is an awesome way to spend a layover in Dubai.

It lasts 2-3 hours and begins at the Dubai Marina, about a 30 minute drive from DXB airport.

5. Float off on a hot air balloon tour

Personally, I find this the coolest and most unique experience you could have in Dubai. Who else gets to say they went on a Hot Air Balloon ride in freaking Dubai?!

The tour lines up perfectly with arrivals in the early morning, as it begins with a 430AM pickup and lasts about 5 hours.

6. Experience the Most Epic Skydive Experience of your Life

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Skydive Dubai (@skydivedubai)

How to get around Dubai on a layover

Dubai happens to be one of the most well-connected cities in the world. With a metro station directly at the airport to Uber-efficient rideshares and excellent tour packages, you can easily explore downtown Dubai from the airport with a 4 hour or longer layover.

Here’s how.

1. Rent a Car

For the best flexibility and especially on a longer layover where you’re trying to do the most, I recommend renting a car.

Hertz is super convenient, particularly if you’re a Gold or President’s Club member. There’s nothing like walking directly to your car without having waited in any line, and leaving straight away.

But if you’re feeling a little frisky and desire something a little luxurious to keep up with the Jonesses, Dubai is the place for that. Whether you want to rent a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, VIP Rentals has you covered, though there are many rental companies offering amazing cars for the day.

Take the Metro

With a metro station located right at the airport and convenient stops all over town, the metro is a very cost-effective way to get around Dubai, but it’s much slower than driving.

The Dubai metro is very newly built, offers Wifi, and usually isn’t very crowded. You can find more info here .

I usually use Google Maps to find the best routes and schedules.

2. Grab a Careem, Uber, Taxi (cheapest short distance)

My go-to in Dubai for getting around is generally Uber or Careem (the local app for anything you need in town).

Whether it’s for short or long distances, prices are reasonable as the roads in Dubai are extremely efficient. Pickup from DXB airport is easy to find, though sometimes there is a bit of a wait time.

If there’s a long wait for a rideshare app, consider taking a taxi – they offer similar pricing but often have no wait time at all. The only downside is they tend to be slightly less comfortable.

3. Ride the Bus

I can’t say in my many times in Dubai that I ever took the bus, but they exist. I would use Google Maps for recommendations on routes.

Long distance buses (such as to Abu Dhabi) are very comfortable, safe, and affordable.

Other layovers coming up? Check out these comprehensive transit guides and see how you can make your next layover as epic as you could ever imagine:

emirates dubai tour layover

Many airlines have 'stopover' programs that let travelers tour a city between connecting flights, and some will even pay for a hotel — here's how to book them

  • Many people intentionally book flights with long connections so they can explore the layover city.
  • Airlines capitalize on this trend with "stopover" programs, some even offering free hotels and food.
  • These stopovers benefit travelers, airlines, and the carrier's home country by boosting tourism.

Insider Today

A special segment of adventurous travelers will purposely book itineraries with long connections in layover cities just to leave the airport and explore for a few hours or days between flights.

Airlines have jumped on this growing trend with built-in "stopover" programs, which can come with free or discounted hotels, excursions, transportation, and food at the layover destination.

It's basically a vacation within a vacation.

Although it sounds too good to be true, stopovers benefit everyone involved. Travelers get more choices and don't have to be confined to an airport, airlines gain customers who may have otherwise chosen a nonstop option on a competitor, and the carrier's home country sees a boost in tourism.

Plus, the cheap or complimentary accommodations typically come at a small cost to airlines, thanks to partnerships with local hotels or tour companies.

Not all stopover programs are structured with an emphasis on tourism, though, as some were created simply to offer conveniences during long layovers. Still, they are a way to secure a free hotel and explore an extra city.

Here are 22 global airline stopover programs, each lasting anywhere from hours to months.

Many carriers allow stopovers to be added to a regular cash booking, but some are only available via award tickets . This means the flight was paid for using points/miles or a combination of points/miles and cash.

Air Canada has a stopover option built into its Aeroplan loyalty program. It allows customers booking award flights to add a stop on international journeys and explore practically any city the airline flies to outside the US and Canada.

The add-on costs 5,000 Aeroplan points each way and can only be booked if the stop is at least 24 hours, capping out at 45 days.

Air France/KLM

Air France and Dutch carrier KLM's Flying Blue loyalty program offers a stopover of 24 hours or more in a connecting city on either carrier or their airline partners.

The option is free to add to award tickets, and passengers can stay up to a year in the stopover city.

China Southern Airlines

China Southern Airlines offers a free one-night hotel stay for transfer passengers with connection times lasting between six and 30 hours, though there are some time and route restrictions.

Breakfast and transportation are included for eligible travelers.

Copa Airlines

Copa Airlines' Panama stopover program allows customers to spend anywhere from 24 hours to seven days in the nation's capital, Panama City, on their outbound or return trip.

The option is free for the first stopover, but a second stopover can cost up to $250 plus taxes. Copa offers discounted hotels and tours that can be booked via its stopover website.

Emirates allows a stopover in Dubai with the option to add discounted tours or hotel bookings to the itinerary via its website.

The UAE carrier also has a " Dubai Connect " program that gives passengers with layovers between 6 and 26 hours, depending on the cabin, a complimentary hotel, transfers, meals, and any needed visa.

Dubai Connect only triggers if the customer takes the next available flight. Essentially, you can't intentionally book a longer layover to quality for the free stopover hotel.

Ethiopian Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines' transit program gives customers flying via Addis Ababa a free hotel, transit visa, and transfers during layovers lasting between eight and 24 hours.

The hotel on the airline's website is the Ethiopian Skylight In-Terminal Hotel, located inside the airport.

Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways offers a stopover in its Abu Dhabi hub, which comes with an undisclosed discount at select three-star hotels for up to two nights.

Two and four-night stays can be booked at more luxurious four and five-star hotels at a 40% discount. The minimum stay is 24 hours.

Although Etihad's website says it is temporarily unavailable, the airline used to allow eligible travelers to use a so-called Transit Connect Package that provided a free hotel near the airport for layovers lasting 10 to 24 hours. It is unclear when or if the program is returning.

Fiji Airways

Fiji Airways offers a stopover program in Fiji for those traveling to and from Australia, New Zealand, and other South Pacific nations.

The stopovers, which trigger at 24 hours, are not limited to JAL's hubs in Tokyo but can be enjoyed in places like Osaka and Kyoto using the airline's multi-city booking tool.

Latam Airlines

Latam Airlines offers stopovers for between one and three days on flights that connect in São Paulo, Brasilia, Fortaleza, Recife, Manaus, Curitiba, and Belem. Only international itineraries that connect in São Paulo.

Oman Air offers customizable stopover packages to give travelers time to explore the country's capital, Muscat, and beyond. An additional fare charge may be applicable, though the airline does not fly to the US.

Packages and a-la-carte options include discounted hotels for up to three nights, as well as organized tours, meals, and transfers.

Australian flag carrier Qantas offers its stopovers in a similar manner to JAL in that multi-city bookings can be manipulated to add extra days between flights in layover cities, like Bangkok, Osaka, or San Francisco.

This comes at no extra cost on eligible Qantas fares and can be used on its Oneworld partner airlines.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways' stopover program allows passengers with a minimum layover of 12 hours and up to 24 hours to choose from a list of deeply discounted four and five-star hotels. Certain flight itineraries allow for up to four nights.

Nightly hotel rates start at $14 per person for 1 night at four-star standard hotels, with premium five-star beach hotels starting at $30 per person for one night.

Royal Jordanian Airlines

Royal Jordanian Airlines' transit program gives economy and business-class travelers with at least eight and six-hour layovers, respectively, a free hotel room, meals, and transit, assuming certain fare conditions are met.

However, the connecting flight must be the earliest possible — meaning, similar to Emirates, passengers can't intentionally book a longer layover to be eligible for the complimentary perks.

Swiss International Air Lines

Swiss International Air Lines, or SWISS, has a multi-city stopover booking tool on its website that allows passengers to find itineraries with extra days in Switzerland.

The cost of hotels and other perks is on the customer, though.

Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines' stopover program is available via the multi-city tool, similar to other carriers, where travelers can add hotels, transfers, and activities. The stopover can last one to seven days.

Singapore also offers free transit tours to passengers with layover times between five and a half and 24 hours at Singapore's Changi Airport. It's first-come, first-serve and includes sightseeing around Singapore.

TAP Air Portugal

TAP Air Portugal allows customers to add a stopover in Lisbon or Porto between one and 10 days, offering discounts on hotels, food, and activities.

It also offers 25% off a domestic flight to a second Portuguese destination, like the Azores or Madeira islands, to take during the stopover.

Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines' stopover program gives economy travelers a one-night free hotel stay and business flyers a two-night free stay if the period between their connecting flights in Istanbul exceeds 20 hours.

Those traveling from the US in economy class can stay up to two nights in a four-star hotel, while those traveling in business can stay up to three nights in a five-star hotel.
