How to Do the Douro Valley by Train

22 Feb, 2022

Are you ready to discover the Douro Valley by train?

Wine holidays to the  Douro Valley is a must for wine lovers, whether you’re a fan of Port in particular or Portuguese wines in general, and to explore the Douro Valley by train is a not to be missed experience. More than 2,000 years of winemaking have shaped this UNESCO World Heritage Site into a unique, vine-terraced destination dotted with wineries that welcome visitors with attractive tasting rooms, dining and accommodation options. However, driving a car along the narrow, winding roads that make their way up the dizzyingly steep slopes is not for everyone. So why not discover how to do the Douro Valley by train and meanwhile take amazing wine tours? A direct line runs up the valley, starting from Porto’s São Bento station in the city centre and ending near the Spanish border at Pocinho. The towns of Régua and Pinhão make good stopping off points along the way with plenty of opportunities to do wine tasting. Make the most of your Douro Valley wine holiday when you travel by train!

Catching the train to the douro valley in porto.

Before you board the train to the Douro Valley, take time to explore the city of Porto (Oporto to locals).  This is where Port wine took its name back in the 17th century, but today you can see more recent versions of the flat-bottomed boats known as rabelos  that used to make the river journey down the Douro, bringing barrels of wine to be aged before shipping.

There are many Port visitor centres on the south bank at Vila Nova de Gaia, and taking a tour is a great way to get a grounding in Port production before heading upstream. One of the best is Taylor’s, a fully renovated, 300-year-old lodge which reopened in 2016.

Douro Valley by train and wine tours

One of the best ways to discover Porto is by taking a guided food walking tour. It will give you the rare opportunity to tantalise your tastebuds with northern Portuguese flavours, explore narrow cobble streets and meet the locals that bring Porto’s gastronomy to life. From just £154, $210 and €185 – find out more here .

To discover the north side of the river, catch the rabelo ferry service from the old Croft bottling plant: three minutes and €3.00 will get you to the very heart of the city. Visit one of the wine bars, serving petiscos (tapas) and wine by the glass (Wine Quay Bar is a good example). Before heading, suitably restored, for historic São Bento station and the start of your Douro valley train journey.

No need to make reservations; trains for the Douro Valley leave regularly and tickets are reasonably priced (the trip from Porto to the end of the line at Pocinho costs less than €14 one way). Sit on the right-hand side of the train to make the most of the river views.

For those of you wishing to opt for a different way to visit the Douro Valley you can choose to hop on board a boat in Porto which will sail you down the river and take you to two wineries, and there’s even a wine tasting on board! From £45, $62 and €55 – find out more here .

Porto to Régua in the Douro Valley

A couple of hours down the line on your train journey from Porto is Régua: jump off here to visit Quinta do Vallado . The vibe at this leading Douro valley wine hotel is casual chic. Tucked up on a hillside a short taxi ride out of town, it boasts a new cellar (built in 2009) and a recently-added, stylish contemporary wing with 13 super-comfortable rooms. The white leather bath pillows, bright orange pool towels and complementary glass of white Port on arrival are nice touches.

Douro Valley by train and wine tours

The hotel and its grounds provide plenty of cool, airy spaces, and a spacious, designer-furnished lounge offers free coffee, grapes and small snacks as well as an excellent selection of wine books and magazines to browse. Wine lovers will not want to miss the guided winery visit and wine tasting (free for hotel guests) which includes Vallado’s Riserva Field Blend, a wine made from 40 grape varieties.

Douro Valley by train and wine tours

Alternatively, borrow a bicycle and ride down to the town, take a picnic basket and stroll through the surrounding vineyards, or simply relax by the pool that looks onto the terraced vines across the river for a picture-perfect Douro Valley wine holiday. Hotel guests and outside visitors alike can dine here too (advance booking for the set dinner with wines is required but there’s also short, accessibly-priced menu of tasty bar snacks).

In the town of Régua itself is the Museo do Douro, which provides a helpful grounding on the Douro Valley and its wine industry (a useful starting point for Port newbies). The entry fee includes a glass of Port which can be sipped while admiring the river views from the museum’s terrace.

After this, head for Castas & Pratos, an upmarket restaurant handily located in a renovated siding next to the railway station. Savour the carefully-prepared cuisine, extensive wine selection and air-con before boarding the train and heading on to Pinhão.

Alternatively, if you’re visiting between June and October, take a trip back in time by riding the  Douro valley steam train . The route follows the river banks between Régua and Tua, stopping at Pinhão, and although it’s not cheap, this is a great way to see unique vineyard landscapes from the comfort of a historic carriage hauled by a 1925 steam engine, no less.

Arriving by train in Pinhão

Douro Valley by train and wine tours

From Pinhão, the train runs another 35 kilometres further along the banks of the Douro River into the Douro Superior area, and on to the end of the line at Pocinho, a small, rather quiet town with little to recommend it. However, the views along the Pinhão–Pocinho stretch are special, so it’s worth making the 90-minute journey if you have the time.

The Linha do Douro Railway; a tourism guide to the Porto to Douro Valley train for 2024

The Douro Valley conceals some of the most beautiful natural scenery of northern Portugal, which is formed of terraced vineyards and steep valleys. Snaking along the meandering river, for much of the route is the scenic the Linha do Douro Railway.

This railway connects Porto with the Pocinho, high up in the Alto Douro, and the later sections of the route are considered as one of the most picturesque railways in Europe.

This guide will provide an overview of the Linha do Douro train service, different suggested tours and details of the towns that can be visited along the route. Related articles: Guide to the Douro - Douro by car - Porto day trips

Why explore the Douro Valley by train?

The main advantage of the Linha do Douro is that more of this stunning region can be visited than seen by a cruise boat. The train connects Porto with the small village of Pocinho, whereas the 1-day river cruises from Porto only travel to Pinhão, much further downstream.

The Douro river between Pinhão and Pocinho is the most scenic section and can only be seen via car, train or boat cruise that starts in Pinhão. The train also allows for greater flexibility and time to explore the different towns along the route.

Train Times and Information

The Porto to Pocinho train departs from São Bento train station in central Porto and a single ticket to Pocinho costs €14.50.

The train journey takes around three and a half hours, but there are multiple trains with different connections, our suggested routes are detailed in the following section.

The latest timetable can be viewed on the CP (Comboios de Portugal) website: www.cp.pt/ StaticFiles/ horarios/ regional/ comboios-regionais- porto-regua- douro.pdf

(link opens new window)

The first hour of the journey is through non-descript residential areas and bland countryside but after the town of Pala the railway starts to follow the river.

The final section between Régua and Pocinho could be considered one of the most beautiful train lines in Europe, with stunning views of the Douro River and the terraced vineyards that climb the sides of the steep hills.

The interactive map below displays the route of the Linha do Douro railway. The map shows all the stations along the river valley with green markers green, and the main stations of interest to visitors (Régua, Pinhão, and Pocinho) are marked in yellow. ( Note: Zoom out to see all the points)

Tours of the Douro Valley An organised tour led by an experienced guide is often the best way to get the most from the Douro region. There are many excellent tours that combine wine tasting, a boat cruise and sightseeing in a single day. Some of the best tours offered by GetYourGuide include: • A highly regarded full-day tour, with over 7,000 positive reviews! • A river cruise from Porto to Pinhão, complete with breakfast and dinner • A wine tour of the Douro featuring two tastings and a river cruise • A small-group tour of the Douro region

Suggested Itineraries for the Linha do Douro

There are multiple options for a day trip along the Linha do Douro and this section will detail some of the feasible choices. Please note these were correct in Jan 2024 and are based upon the timetable detailed above; always check train times and boat cruises are seasonal dependant and should be pre booked. Note: At Pinhão and Régua short 1hour cruises can be caught

Estação Ferroviária do Pinhão train station

Pinhão train station and the hills of the Douro region

Option 1 - Direct train to Pocinho . The 9:20 train, which departs from São Bento, is the only daily direct service to Pocinho. This is a great service as there are no connections and arrives in Pocinho at 12:38. The return train is at 13:08 or 17:14. Note: Pocinho is a very small village and can be easily seen within 30 minutes.

Option 2 - Train to Pinhão and River Cruise to Tua . This option combines the train with a boat cruise along the most beautiful stretch of the river to the Confluence of the Tua River with the Douro. Try to catch the earliest train as the boat cruises depart at 10:30 or around 14:00-15:00. The stretch of river between Pinhão and Tua is wonderful and is much better experienced on a boat than train.

Option 3 - Train to Pinhão and visit the Museu do Douro in Regua . For this trip catch the direct 9:20 train to Pinhão (11:38), explore Pinhão for a couple of hours and then catch the train to Régua. In Peso da Régua you can visit the informative Museu do Douro, which details the history and traditions of the region.

Towns along the Linha do Douro

Peso da régua.

Peso da Régua is a major centre for Porto production and sits on the banks of the Douro River. The town is a popular departure location for Douro boat tours and is the location of the excellent Museu do Douro. Peso da Régua has a pretty waterfront, but Pinhão, (the next town along the river) is much more charming.

Peso da Régua

Many visitors start their boat tour from Peso da Régua

Peso da Régua

The three bridges of Peso da Régua

Pinhão is the quintessential Douro valley town. This delightful town is surrounded by hills lined with vineyard terraces and sits on a major bend in the river. From the charming waterfront, there are boat tours and the town has a much more relaxed atmosphere than Peso da Régua. While stopped at the station do look at the azulejos (blue and white painted tiles) that depict traditional scenes of vine growing within the Douro.

Pinhão

Ponte do Pinhão douro

The Ponte do Pinhão bridge spanning the Douro River

Tua is a small village in the upper Douro. This is a quiet and tranquil area, (once away from the train station complex), which is popular for hiking. There is a scenic riverside walk which leads to the newly constructed dam and the Tua reservoir. The construction of the dam submerged the Tua to Mirandela railway, which was once regarded as one of the most scenic lines in Europe. The history of this railway can be seen in the museum in Tua train station.

tua dam

The Tua dam and the bridge into the town which dates from the 1940s

Tua River mouth bridge

The Linha do Douro crossing the Tua River, as it joins the Douro

Pocinho – end of the railway

The Linha do Douro terminates in the tiny village of Pocinho, and it has the atmosphere of being at the end of the line. There is a semi-industrial feel with the numerous power lines leading from the dam, and an abandoned railway bridge crossing the Douro, which was part of the defunct Linha do Sabor, a narrow-gauge railway that connected to the Miranda do Douro.

Pocinho lies within the parched and hot region of the upper Douro, where summer temperatures regular exceed 40C, and is often referred to as the Terra Quente (hot earth). For the day trip, there is not really much to see in Pocinho, the main draw is just to complete the scenic rail journey and then catch the return train.

4km south of Pocinho is the Vale do Côa, famed for its prehistoric rock art (22,000 to 10,000 years ago). Tours of the Parque Arqueológico do Vale do Côa must be pre-booked, but there is an informative museum on the edge of the site. Advice: To explore the upper Douro a car is really needed.

The Linha do Sabor used to head north from Pocinho, and all that remains is the rusting bridge (the Ponte do Pocinho)

Pocinho dam is not as scenic as other areas along the Douro, with a massive transformer station on the northern banks

Portugal’s Douro Line is a scenic train journey to “nowhere”

Austin Bush

Pocinho train station

Our slow travel series explores how you can take more-mindful journeys by train, boat, bus or bike – with tips on how to reach your no-fly destination, and what to see and do along the way. Here, Lonely Planet’s Austin Bush takes us along northern Portugal’s Douro Valley by train.

There isn’t much in the tiny town of Pocinho. But in the case of northern Portugal ’s Linha do Douro, the train line that connects this rural village and Porto , it’s more about the journey to get there.

The Douro River bisects the top half of Portugal , carving a ragged gap from east to west. That glass of port you tasted in Porto? It got its start in the almost impossibly steep vineyards that frame the river valley. And while most visitors to Porto will experience the Douro River via a cruise, I wanted to do it by train.

Views of the Douro Valley

Many consider the Linha do Douro, the train line that follows the valley, one of the  most beautiful train rides in Europe . Under 125 miles (200km) long, the line terminates at Pocinho, just shy of the  Spanish  border. This means that the train doesn’t really get you anywhere in particular, and you have to return the way you came. But if done right, it’s possible to approach the Linha do Douro as a slow and contemplative – yet also occasionally dramatic – day trip, one that even offers a break for lunch and wine tasting.

The retro interior of the train that runs the Linha do Douro, from Porto to Pocinho, northern Portugal, Europe

The departure

To ensure that you have time for lunch or (and?) wine tasting, it’s necessary to take the first train of the day, which departs from Porto’s legendary São Bento Station at 7:15am. I was obliged to change trains in the town of Ermesinde, just northeast of Porto, and it was here that I boarded my Linha do Douro train. The stock – made in Switzerland, painted a ’70s-era orange and virtually empty – could easily have featured in a Wes Anderson film.

The next hour, you’ll traverse Porto’s urban sprawl – predominantly gray, semi-industrial feeling suburbs. Your first tunnel (of 23 total) is in Caíde, which is also where the views start to become more rural. The town of Ribadouro offers your first glimpse of the Douro, and it’s from this point on that things get interesting.

Spending diaries: What I spent on a cheap-ish weekend trip to Porto, Portugal

Vineyards in the Douro Valley just east of Pinhão as seen from the train that runs the Linha do Douro, from Porto to Pocinho in northern Portugal

The train snakes along the river, with incredibly steep terraced vineyards and tiny villages clinging to hillsides rising on either side. Whistle-stop stations boast charming tiles; at some points the train tracks are virtually at river level. I did the trip in late January, and while mist and fog obscured the views they created an otherworldly, remote atmosphere. Be sure to sit on the right-hand side for the best views. You may be tempted to hop off in the large-ish city of Peso da Régua , but a wiser stop is Pinhão , where you’ll arrive at about 10am.

The interlude

The terminus for one-day boat trips from Porto, Pinhão is a funny little town, a mix of crusty old winemakers and wide-eyed tourists. It also offers enough to occupy you for a few hours. Take the obligatory photo of the tile murals at the station, and after a walk along the charming waterfront, start planning lunch. A handful of cafes and restaurants are in the center of town, with eateries such as Veladoura or Cozinha da Clara located a short walk away.

Pinhao train station tiles (1).jpg

Alternatively, Pinhão is also home to a legendary butcher, Talho Qualifer – Quinta das Barrocas, where you can taste smoked meats in-house or assemble a riverside picnic lunch. Of course, you’re in the heart of Portugal’s most prestigious wine country, so pencil in time for a tasting session. Several houses, including Croft , Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta do Noval are located right in town, and offer tastings of standard and fortified wines.

Satiated and slightly buzzed, it’s time to continue to the end of the line: Pocinho. I recommend taking the train that departs at 3:43pm: this allows you nearly five hours to dine and wine in Pinhão, and also catch a not-too-late return train from Pocinho back to Porto.

A typical station along the Linha do Douro, the train that runs from Porto to Pocinho in northern Portugal

The final hour that connects Pinhão and Pocinho is arguably the most beautiful section of the line – and the section that the day-trippers on boats from Porto miss out on. Outside of Pinhão, the Douro narrows and the scenery becomes more rocky, rugged and wild. At Ferradosa, the train crosses a bridge (one of 35 along the route) to the south bank of the river. Shift to the left side of the train to see tiny train stations – shelters, really – that link to trailheads, abandoned wineries and vineyards that extend right to the tracks.

As you approach the end of the line, the landscape abruptly widens into a broad valley studded with olive trees, a dam and power plant ominously looming in the distance. In Pocinho, the original wooden station is still intact, though there’s not much else to see or do here.

Stretch your legs, take a bathroom break and board the train (most likely the same one you arrived on) returning to Porto, which departs at 5:14pm. If there are no delays, you should arrive in Porto around 8:30pm, just in time for dinner.

A rainbow over a riverside village and vineyards in the Douro Valley as seen from the train that runs the Linha do Douro, from Porto to Pocinho in northern Portugal, Europe

Practical information about the Linha do Douro

Best time to go.

I did the trip in January, which meant the weather was particularly wet and misty. If you’re serious about clear views or photography – or simply want to take advantage of the long days to take a later train back – make the trip during the summer months.

Food and drink on the journey

Pinhão is your best bet for food and drink. Alternatively, if you’re on a budget, pack a lunch and a bottle of wine ahead of time and plan a riverside picnic.

I bought my tickets in advance, yet given how few people ride the Linha do Douro nowadays, you’d probably be fine buying your tickets at the station. A round-trip ticket costs just under €30; breaking the trip into bits and buying three separate tickets as I suggest here will cost a tiny bit more.

Portugal's most scenic train ride takes you along the Douro Valley from Porto (Portugal's second city) to Régua, Pinhão & Pocinho.  It makes a great day trip from Porto, although it's too far for a day trip from Lisbon.  The line currently ends at Pocinho, but over the next few years they plan to reopen the 28km from Pocinho to Barca de Alva on the border with Spain.  Indeed, until 1984 the line continued all the way to Salamanca.

Train times

There are 10-12 trains per day from Porto to Régua, of which 5 or 6 continue to Pinhão & Pocinho.  Porto-Pocinho takes around 3h25.

Check times from Porto to Régua, Pinhão or Pocinho using the journey planner at the Portuguese Railways website www.cp.pt .

You can catch any of these trains from the main Porto Campanhã station, but some start/terminate at the wonderful Porto São Bento station, located right in the UNESCO-listed old city and one of Europe's most beautiful stations.  Start from there if you can.

The best trains to take are the ones called MiraDouro, these use classic carriages built by Swiss firm Schindler, with wide opening windows.  There is a page about these services with a timetable of when this specific type of train runs at www.cp.pt/passageiros/en/how-to-travel/For-leisure/Nature-and-Culture/miradouro-train (please let me know if that link changes).  Some of these start at San Bento station.

How much does it cost?

Porto to Pocinho costs around €14 each way, Porto to Régua around €10 each way.  Fixed-price, unlimited availability, cannot sell out.

How to buy tickets

You can buy tickets at www.cp.pt (in €) or Omio.com (in €, £ or $) and print them out or show them on your phone, but as there are no reservations, tickets have unlimited availability and cannot sell out, you may as well just buy at the station on the day.

Travel tips

Start at Porto São Bento:   São Bento station with its classic wall tiling is a Porto attraction in its own right, so for the full experience take one of the morning trains that start at São Bento.

Which side of the train to sit?   The river is on the right hand side going east from Porto through Tua to just before Ferradosa, then on the left to Pocinho.  If the train isn't crowded, you can switch seats at Ferradosa.

Food & drink:   The trains are inter-regional trains with no catering, so bring your own food & drink.

Combine train with river boat:   Any hotel in Porto can book you onto a river boat trip along the Douro, for example from Régua to Pinhão.  You can then take the train from Porto to Régua and Pinhão back to Porto, a DIY day trip from Porto by train & boat.  Indeed, you can find one-way river boat trips all the way from Porto to Régua which allow you to return to Porto by train, or vice versa.  Or cruise between Régua & Pocinho, with travel to and from the boat by train.  Try www.cruzeiros-douro.pt .

Short of time?   You'll still get a good appreciation of the wonderful Douro scenery travelling from Porto to Pinhão.  One correspondent recommends lunch in Pinhão at the Casa do Escritor restaurant, dourorenaissence.wixsite.com/writersplace .

Porto São Bento station

Porto São Bento is a terminus located in Porto's UNESCO-listed historic centre.  Built between 1904 & 1916, the azulejo tiling in the main hall makes it one of Europe's most beautiful stations, and a Porto attraction in its own right.  Make sure you call in here!  It's not served by mainline trains to or from Lisbon, but frequent suburban trains link it with Porto Campanhã every 5-15 minutes, journey time 4 minutes.  A few Douro Valley trains start from here, before serving Porto Campanhã.  See larger photo of the interior .  See location map .  See Wikipedia page about Sao Bento .

Now on the way back towards Porto...

And relax...   If you return to Porto Sao Bento station, how about a beer & unique crispy hot dog or Portuguese sandwich at the iconic Gazela Cachorrinhos da Batalha snack bar 2 minutes walk outside the station?

What are the trains like?

Locomotive-hauled:   Some train are locomotive-hauled, with a mix of former Swiss Railways carriages or stainless-steel cars made in Portugal.  They're not air-conditioned, but have a major advantage - the windows open, for reflection-free photography.  All the trains are 2nd class only.

Air-conditioned diesel units:   Some departures are operated by diesel units, air-conditioned but without opening windows.  Below, this is the lunchtime train from Porto to Pocinho.  Photos courtesy of DiscoverByRail.com

Brief History of the Douro Valley Wine Region

The Douro Valley carries a rich historical legacy, its story woven into the steep terraced vineyards that line the riverbanks and the traditions upheld by its people. Its significance extends far beyond its geographical boundaries, with a history deeply rooted in viticulture and an enduring cultural heritage.

The Douro Valley’s viticultural history dates back over 2,000 years, with the Romans being the first to introduce organized grape cultivation in the region. But it was in the 17th century that the region truly gained international recognition, with the emergence of Port wine. This sweet, fortified wine became highly sought-after, particularly in England, transforming the Douro Valley into a vital economic region for Portugal .

The cultivation techniques used in the valley evolved over time to adapt to the challenging terrain. The steep slopes and rocky soil required innovative solutions, leading to the construction of stone-walled terraces known as “socalcos”. These terraces, still in use today, are a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the Douro winegrowers.

In 2001, the Douro Valley’s historical and cultural significance was recognized internationally when it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site . This status acknowledges the valley’s unique landscape, which has been shaped by human activities, mainly viticulture, for centuries. The designation also attests to the region’s cultural wealth, including architectural monuments, archaeological sites, and intangible heritage such as folklore, festivals, and traditional practices.

Being a UNESCO World Heritage Site brings responsibilities along with the recognition. The valley is now subject to international standards of conservation to protect its cultural landscape. This means ensuring sustainable development, preserving traditional cultivation practices, and maintaining the balance between nature and human activities.

Winemaking in the Douro Valley

Viticulture is the lifeblood of the Douro Valley, its tradition and significance deeply embedded in the fabric of the region. It’s here, amid the dramatic, terraced landscape, where the art of winemaking not just flourishes, but thrives in its full glory.

At the heart of the region’s winemaking legacy is Port wine. Born from a unique combination of the Douro Valley’s terroir and centuries-old winemaking techniques, Port is a fortified wine, rich, sweet, and often enjoyed as a dessert wine. It gained prominence in the 17th century when England, amidst a political conflict with France, began importing this robust wine from Portugal. The Douro Valley’s vineyards were swiftly demarcated for the production of this now-famed wine, making it the world’s first officially designated wine region.

Port wine comes in several styles, the most common being Ruby and Tawny. Ruby Port is known for its rich, fruity flavors and deep red color, while Tawny Port, aged in wooden barrels, is characterized by its nutty flavors and amber hue. There’s also Vintage Port, considered the finest of all, made from the best grapes of a single exceptional year and aged in the bottle for many years.

Though renowned for Port, the Douro Valley is no one-trick pony. The region also produces outstanding red and white still wines. Reds are typically robust, with dense fruit flavors, while whites are often fresh and aromatic, showcasing the versatility of the region’s indigenous grape varieties.

As you traverse the Douro Valley, you’ll find an array of quintas (wine estates) open for visits and tastings. Some of the prominent ones include Quinta do Noval , known for its top-notch Vintage Ports; Quinta do Crasto , acclaimed for both its high-quality Ports and still wines; and Quinta de La Rosa , a family-run estate offering a diverse range of wines, including the increasingly popular Douro reds.

Gastronomy in the Douro

In the Douro Valley, the gastronomic experience is as integral to the region’s charm as its sweeping landscapes and esteemed wines. The local cuisine, much like its viticulture, is a testament to the region’s bounty and the local people’s culinary craft.

The gastronomy of the Douro Valley is deeply rooted in its land, utilizing the freshest local produce, meat, and fish. It’s a hearty cuisine, with robust flavors and generous portions that pair wonderfully with the region’s wines. Whether it’s the succulent meats, fresh river fish, or garden-grown vegetables, each dish tells a story of the region’s agricultural abundance and culinary traditions.

A gastronomic tour of the Douro Valley wouldn’t be complete without tasting some of its iconic dishes. Try the ‘Posta à Mirandesa’, a thick, juicy steak sourced from local cattle and grilled to perfection, or the ‘Bacalhau à Braga’, a codfish dish served with crispy potato matchsticks. For the adventurous palate, ‘Cabrito assado no forno’ or roast goat is a local delicacy often prepared for celebrations and special occasions. Don’t forget to finish your meal with a local sweet treat, like ‘Toucinho do céu’, a rich almond cake.

When it comes to dining, the Douro Valley offers a diverse range of options, from family-run taverns to luxurious wine estate restaurants. DOC (Cais da Folgosa, Estrada Nacional 222, 5110-214 Folgosa, Portugal: +351 254 858 123 ), located on the banks of the Douro River, offers gourmet cuisine with a contemporary twist, and their wine list is simply superb.

At the rustic Tasca da Quinta (R. do Marquês de Pombal 42 R/C, 5050-282 Peso da Régua, Portugal: +351 962 800 873 ), you’ll find traditional dishes that take you on a culinary journey through the region’s flavors.

For an elevated dining experience, visit The Vintage House Hotel’s Rabelo restaurant, where you can enjoy excellent local cuisine complemented by stunning river views.

Best Time(s) to Visit the Douro Valley Wine Region

Climate and seasonal factors: a balanced blend.

The Douro Valley enjoys a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. When planning your visit, it’s essential to consider both your comfort and the type of activities you’re interested in.

Spring (March to May) offers pleasant temperatures and the spectacle of blossoming almond trees, while summer (June to August) can be hot but brings the excitement of the grape harvest.

Autumn (September to November) is a time of striking color changes in the vineyards and more moderate temperatures, while winter (December to February) tends to be quieter, offering the chance to experience a more tranquil Douro Valley.

Seasonal changes in the Douro Valley significantly impact both the available activities and the rhythm of wine production. In the summer months, you might witness the grape harvest and participate in winemaking activities, though it’s worth noting that the heat can make strenuous outdoor activities less comfortable.

Spring and fall are ideal for hiking, cycling, and exploring the landscape, with more moderate temperatures and beautiful scenery. If your focus is primarily on wine tasting and indoor cultural activities, winter can also be a great time to visit. It’s less crowded, and many quintas remain operational, offering a more intimate experience. Regardless of when you choose to visit, the Douro Valley is sure to enchant with its timeless beauty and world-renowned wines.

Essential Tips for Traveling in the Douro Valley

Embracing local customs and etiquette: the douro dance.

Understanding the local customs and etiquette will enhance your journey through the Douro Valley. Portuguese people are generally warm, friendly, and polite. A handshake is the standard greeting, and formal titles (‘Senhor’ for men and ‘Senhora’ for women) are used until a first-name basis is established.

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory; in restaurants, a tip of around 10% is standard if you enjoyed your meal and the service. On your vineyard visits, it’s considered good etiquette to purchase a bottle of wine after a tasting, though this is not obligatory.

Currency and Language: A Simple Twist of Portuguese

The official language is Portuguese, and while English is widely spoken in tourist areas and younger generations, learning a few basic phrases in Portuguese can go a long way.

The official currency is the Euro (€), and credit cards are accepted in most places, although having some cash on hand is advisable, especially in more rural areas. ATMs, known locally as Multibancos, are widely available.

Portugal is a very safe country to visit, with low crime rates. However, as with any destination, it’s essential to stay aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings secure. There are no specific health risks associated with the Douro Valley. Still, if you’re planning to partake in outdoor activities during the summer, ensure you stay hydrated and protected from the sun. Ensure you have travel insurance that covers medical expenses, and bring any necessary medication with you, along with a copy of your prescription.

Always drink responsibly, especially during wine tastings, and never drink and drive. The Douro Valley is a region to be savored, and taking these simple precautions will ensure your journey is as carefree as possible.

How to visit the Douro Valley by train

Visiting the Douro Valley is one of the favorite activities for tourists in Portugal. It is an easily accessible destination from Porto, which can be explored in different ways by car, boat, train, and even helicopter.

In this article, we will explain how to visit the Douro Valley by train , independently and cheaply. We will depart from Porto, where the Douro river flows and where we can find the famous port wine caves , and go upriver to explore the Douro farms and hills, where the most famous wine in Portugal is produced.

This is one of the most beautiful regions in Portugal and naturally one of the most popular destinations too. In 2001, the Alto Douro Vinhateiro was also classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO due to how a stunning natural landscape was worked by man, originating the iconic terraces of the Douro.

The train that takes us through the beautiful Douro Valley is called the “MiraDouro.” This offers us a magnificent journey along the Douro line, almost always parallel to the river in vintage carriages and panoramic windows, perfect for enjoying the landscape.

The Douro Line is the name of the railway line that runs from Porto-São Bento (or Campanhã) to Pocinho along the Douro River valley. Thus, this line takes us to 3 UNESCO World Heritage Sites:

  • Departs from Porto, a city whose historic center has been a UNESCO heritage site since 1996;
  • It crosses the Alto Douro Vinhateiro, which, as mentioned, has been a World Heritage Site since 2001;
  • It ends in Pocinho, Vila Nova de Foz Côa, where we can find the famous rock carvings of the Côa valley.

Route of the Douro line

The current route takes around 2h20 to 2h30, with five daily trains in each direction. In addition to the three UNESCO heritage sites, the Douro line passes through several points of interest, which we highlight:

This is the largest city in the region, and also the most touristy. Entirely surrounded by the terraces where Port Wine is produced, this place is impressive.

It is also worth visiting Regua to discover the Douro Museum, the riverside eco path, and the Pedestrian Bridge. There are many tours to the Port Wine production estates, with or without tasting the famous Douro nectar. It is also from Régua that many boat trips depart to cross the monumental Douro Valley wine region. So it is a good place to take a Douro boat tour.

The beautiful city of Lamego is also relatively close to the south of the Douro, but you need to go on a tour or bus to visit it.

Pinhão is the second best-known stop on the Douro line. The village is small but very well known, especially for its historic train station, with beautiful tiles inspired by the production of port wine.

In addition to the station itself, Pinhão is also the starting point for visiting some of the best-known Douro estates. It has a very pleasant riverside area for a short walk to enjoy the typical landscapes of the Alto Douro.

Pinhão is also the starting point for sightseeing on the historic Rabelos boats – the boats that formerly carried port wine from the Douro farms to the Port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Tua is the third town worth mentioning on this line of the Douro. Located at the mouth of the Tua River and the confluence of the old Tua line with the Douro line. It is a land of passage but also a great place to appreciate the natural beauty of the Douro, enhanced by the terraces built by Man.

Tua station is very beautiful with its typical architecture, but it has much to do with the stunning Pinhão station. On the other side of the station is one of the great reasons for Tua’s popularity, the restaurant Calça Curta – one of the best and most traditional restaurants in the Douro region.

If you decide to stop at Tua, don’t miss the opportunity to try river fish, deer and wild boar stews, and, of course, the lagareiro octopus.

Pocinho to Barca d’Alva

Originally the Douro Line went all the way to Barca d’Alva and later on to Spain. However, the last section of the trip between Pocinho and Barca d’Alva was deactivated in the 80s, as well as the Spanish section.

Incidentally, it is precisely in the continuation of this line between Barca d’Alva and La Fregeneda where you can currently take the “tunnels route” or “Camino de Hierro” – a well-known and spectacular hiking trail.

There is a project to reactivate the abandoned Portuguese section from Pocinho to Barca d’Alva, due to the route’s beauty and the high tourist interest in the trip, but the works have not yet started.

Why visit the Douro Valley by Train?

The Douro Valley is one of the most beautiful places in Portugal and a popular destination for foreigners and Portuguese alike. Visiting it is a pleasure in any way, but by train, it is incredibly relaxing and pleasant.

By train, we just have to buy the ticket, take the train, choose a good seat, and enjoy the view. Since we can depart from São Bento, right in the center of Porto, it is also a very simple trip to put into practice.

In addition, it is also the cheapest way to see the Douro Valley, as it is a regular train, not a tourist train, which means that the ticket is relatively cheap. From São Bento to Pocinho it’s only 13.60 Euros.

Tickets, Costs, and Schedule

The Douro line has only five daily trains, of which three depart from São Bento and two from Campanhã. Note: those departing from São Bento must pass through Campanhã before heading to the Douro Valley.

The total journey takes between 2h20 to 2h30 minutes and costs 13.60 Euros. If you buy the return ticket soon, you can enjoy a discount. See here for full prices and hours.

You can buy tickets in advance or on the same day; however, if you are traveling at the weekend or in the summer, we strongly advise you to do so in advance. You can buy online at the CP website or the ticket offices in São Bento or Campanhã.

Tip: You can also download the CP APP and buy tickets there. It’s pretty simple and very convenient.

What is it like to visit the Douro Valley by Train – MiraDouro

For most tourists, this trip starts in São Bento in the center of Porto, which is very convenient. If you want to start in Campanhã, you can get there by metro.

As mentioned above, if you are traveling in the low season, you can perfectly buy the ticket before departing as the train does not fill up and there are no reserved seats. If you are traveling in high season, buy them as far in advance as possible and try to arrive early to choose where you want to sit.

Tip: the train will always travel along the river’s north bank, so the best views are always to the south. So choose seats next to the window on the right.

After choosing a good place, just wait for the train to start and take us through the magnificent Douro Valley. However, we must clarify that the trip is not made through the Douro Valley for the first hour and until you get close to Régua.

The train initially goes through an urban area and then through a rural area, passing through Ermesinde, Penafiel, and Marco de Canaveses until it reaches the Douro, close to Régua. The good news is that from the moment we see Douro, we never leave it.

In Régua, we have the first important stop for those who want to explore the Douro region. However, if you only have one day, we suggest you continue, as we are just at the beginning. The train stops for a short time, you can’t get off and return. On the other hand, from the train, you can get a good idea of the spectacular landscape surrounding the Regua.

Following the MiraDouro, we will continue for about half an hour until we reach Pinhão, where we can see the wonderful Pinhão train station, and then another 15 to 20 minutes to Tua. After the Tua, we have another 45 minutes to reach the last station in Pocinho.

This whole region between Régua and Pocinho is lovely, and seeing it from the train is spectacular. In Pocinho you can perfectly stay there for a while and wait for a later train. If you want, there are 2 or 3 restaurants close to the station, or you can take a snack and have a picnic to enjoy the scenery.

On the way back, the train takes precisely the same route, stopping at the same places.

If you are staying for more than one day, first do the complete Douro line, and then on your way back, leave where you decide to stay. We provide some suggestions below.

Where to sleep if staying more than one day

Stay in régua.

If you have more than one day to visit the Douro Valley by train, we advise you to stay in Régua as it is the largest city and the one with the most and best options for accommodation and restaurants.

As we travel by train, it is important to choose a hotel not too far from the station. So our suggestion goes to the Hotel Régua Douro , as it is just a few meters from the station, from the center of Régua and with rooms facing the terraces of the vineyards and the Douro. It is an excellent hotel with a swimming pool and gym. See availability and prices here.

Alternatively, we suggest the Original Douro Hotel . It is a much cheaper hotel but very comfortable and well-located. Therefore, it offers an excellent price-quality ratio. Reserve here.

Alternatively, you can also stay in Pinhão, which is quieter and much smaller. There are far fewer options here, so booking in advance is even more important.

The best accommodation option in Pinhão is undoubtedly The Vintage House – Douro . It is right next to the station and is a luxury hotel built in an old farmhouse from the 18th century that has been completely renovated. The price is steep, but it is a spectacular hotel. See prices and availability.

If you want a more affordable option but still close to Pinhão station, we suggest Casa Seixas Baptista . It is well located and is ideal for groups of up to 6 people as it has several two bedrooms. Book here.

Douro Valley Historic Train

In this article, we explained everything you need to know to travel to the Douro Valley by train, using the InterRegional train, which runs daily. This train is known as the MiraDouro.

We should not confuse the MiraDouro with the Douro Historical Train. The Historic Train is a tourist train that only travels during the summer and high season. The season, prices, and trips are updated every year.

In addition, it has completely different prices and offers incomparable services such as a music group, port wine tastings, and even samples of regional products.

In addition, the historic train departs from Régua, stops in Pinhão, and ends in Tua. It’s a much shorter journey but a memorable experience, especially for those who love trains and train travel.

So, if you want to take this train, you can simply take the train to Régua and take the historic train there. Don’t forget to book everything well in advance. See the CP website for more information, as this changes annually.

How to Plan a Wine Tour in the Douro Valley – Tips and Advice

The Douro Valley of Portugal is one of the most famous wine regions in the world for its stellar fortified wine, views, and proximity to the city of Porto in northern Portugal.

All of these elements come together to make the region a must-see destination for many travelers to the country. We personally have visited the Douro Valley and consider it to be one of, if not our very favorite, wine region we have ever been to (and we don't make that distinction lightly).

That being said, planning a visit to the Douro Valley can be tricky and there are many important things in mind. So in this Douro Valley wine tour guide we thought we'd share key details that will help you visit the Douro Valley and get the most out of your stay!

Douro Valley Location, Regions, and Styles

Douro Valley, Portugal

The Douro Valley is located approximately 90 minutes east of Porto in northern Portugal and approximately four hours northeast of Lisbon by car . A train also connects Porto to the central Douro town of Pinhao in approximately 2 1/2 hours ( click here to book ).

The region is, by many standards, one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world due to its steep cliffs, terraced and historic patamares, and vistas that go on as far as the eye can see (and then some). The winding and twisting Douro River is found at the base of the valley, and the river plus its many tributaries create several great microclimates for grapes to ripen.

The Douro Valley is split into three major sub-regions visitors should keep in mind- Baixa Corgo, Cima Corgo, and Douro Superior. These run west-to-east respectively and correspond, roughly, to increasing elevation, warmer temperatures, and decreasing influence of the ocean (i.e. less rain). Historically Baixa Corgo has been known for bulk wine production, Cima Corgo has been known as the prized region for port wine (and a developing still wine industry), and the Douro Superior is starting to have vineyards planted as well.

As such, most visitors to the Douro Valley will likely be spending the vast majority of time in the Cima Corgo region, home to Pinhao town, but you may stray into Baixa Corgo and Douro Superior for select wineries, too.

Winery on a Hilltop in the Douro

The Douro Valley is the producer of the fortified wine aptly named Port. This wine is produced from many local grapes (such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Sousao) and produced in several styles including ruby, tawny, vintage, white, rose, and a whole lot more- many of which have age indications of 20, 30, 40 years or more.

Many wineries ship the produced wine to the port houses of Vila Nova de Gaia, a short walk from Porto's old town, for maturation, bottling, and sale (visitors staying in Porto should plan a visit to a few- we love Graham's for the library tasting and Kopke Port House for the decade flight!); however, due to the development of modern temperature control systems in the last 100 years, newer producers also are aging port on-site in the Douro Valley especially.

While fortified wine is king in this wine region, producers are starting to promote a budding still wine industry using the same native grapes that go into Port production. While the reds can still be quite high in alcohol and incredibly tannic (and likely benefit from some age in the bottle), the wines here are growing in quality with each passing season and should not be overlooked when visiting- especially if you have ample time to explore several wineries.

When to Visit the Douro Valley

Angie at a douro Valley Lookout

The Douro Valley is known to be incredibly hot in the summer, so much so that locals have adopted the phrase “nine months of winter, three months of hell.” Average temperatures in July and August exceed 85 °F and 100 °F degree days are not unheard of. As such, one could argue the best times to visit the Douro Valley are April to June and late September to mid-November to avoid the hottest months of the year and the coldest days of winter.

Harvest in the Douro Valley tends to start in mid-September, and activity within the valley may continue until early October. This is worth noting as some wineries may offer special experiences for visitors during harvest, other wineries may be closed outright to focus on harvest, and, perhaps most importantly, there could be an increase of trucks driving on the narrow roads of the valley- increasing safety concerns for those who are not confident drivers on narrow mountain roads.

Likewise, as is the case in most remote wine regions worldwide, some wineries close for tours completely in the winter months if roads become difficult to drive on and tourism slumps. That being said, wineries do seem to be open throughout winter and some deals may be found for those willing to accept some tradeoffs. As such, no matter when you visit the Douro Valley, it is best to check winery tour dates well before booking any plane ticket.

  • Please note : Our rough date ranges are only guidelines. Whether or not wineries are open during the range of dates listed above may vary and should be confirmed.

Planning Where to Stay in the Douro Valley

View from a Quinta in the Douro Valley

If you are planning a visit to Douro Valley wineries, there are three main accommodation types you may likely be looking at:

  • Staying in Pinhao Town – A small selection of hotels are located in the modest town of Pinhao in the heart of Cima Corgo.
  • Staying at a Quinta at a Wine Estate – Many vineyards maintain bed & breakfast style properties on-site.
  • Staying Elsewhere (Porto) and Visiting on a Day Trip – Stay outside the wine region and drive in/out on a day trip.

There is no easy answer in the Douro Valley, and each comes with its own respective trade-offs.

Staying in a Quinta at a vineyard or winery may be perhaps the most interesting of accommodation options in the Douro Valley as you will likely be surrounded by grapes on the property. These often have the best views, delicious meals, and, more than likely, wine samplings from whatever producer they're associated with.

It is important to note the distinction between vineyard and winery here as some Quintas are only associated with vineyard owners (i.e. grape growers) while some Quintas are associated with wineries proper (i.e. winemakers)- the term can be used interchangeably in the Douro.

As such, there may be a disparity in the level of experiences offered here- vineyard Quintas may only offer tastings at dinner by the glass/bottle. In contrast, winery Quintas may be able to give you a winery tour and a more robust tasting experience. If additional experiences are important to you beyond location and general hotel amenities/ratings, you'll do well to be selective in your research here.

The downside to staying at a Quinta is that they can be quite far from the main roads and bridges, adding complexity for drivers and additional driving time overall. As such, finding a Quinta with good accessibility may be a good idea over driving 15, 20, or 30 minutes further away to get a prized amenity or discount. A few hotels of note include:

  • Great Location : Quinta do Pego is located roughly 10 minutes from Pinhao with some great amenities
  • Highly Rated : Quinta da Gricha has prized amenities and high reviews
  • Overall Experience : Quinta Nova Winery House is attached to a winery with many tour options

Towns in the Douro

Pinhao town has reasonably priced hotels and could be an option for those who want to be within walking distance of select restaurants and a few wineries. Likewise, the train from Porto stops in Pinhao, so visitors hiring a driver or taking guided tours may find options particularly worthwhile to check out. Finally, one of the Douro Valleys' main bridges passes through Pinhao, so those who will be exploring with a rental car can access both sides of the river with ease (those who stay further away and need to cross a river likely will drive through Pinhao town often, thus adding on significant driving time).

The downside to Pinhao town is simply that it is small. While some options exist to eat and drink, they are inherently limited. The views out of town are also nice, but they are not the picturesque views you would get from a more remote Quinta. A few hotels of note include:

  • Great Value : LBV House Hotel is just a short walk from the center of Pinhao
  • Good Views : Quinta de la Rosa is located just about a five-minute drive from Pinhao
  • Highly Rated : The Vintage House is right in the heart of Pinhao

Those who want to visit the Douro Valley on a day trip may be able to expand their horizons and stay between Porto and Pinhao as the driving distance between the two is only 90 minutes without traffic (tolls). However, due to the extended drive times, tolls, winding hills within the Douro, and samplings of wines, staying closer has countless benefits.

Towns like Vila Real , Peso da Regua , and Lamego are all within 30-45 minutes of Pinhao town in Cima Corgo and could be options to consider. In Regua, the Original Douro Hotel is known to book private tours with drivers for guests.

Driving vs. Guided Douro Valley Wine Tours

Car in the Douro

We could argue that driving in any wine region has inherent risks, particularly due to the rural nature of the industry and the fact that the driver needs to be responsible at tastings (Portugal's laws restrict to a max of 0.5 g/L BAC if not lower), but the Douro Valley may be one of the riskiest for all but the surest drivers.

The reason for this is that the Douro Valley is home to steep cliffs, narrow rows, and terraces that are much higher than you would anticipate from photos. While the roads are generally two-way almost everywhere, they are often not wide enough for cars to easily pass in both directions. As such, when a car approaches from the opposite direction, one driver likely has to pull close to a cliff edge (or terrace wall) in a careful dance that can only be described as nail-biting (especially after a day of wine tasting and/or at night as lighting on the road is minimal at best).

As such, while we have personally driven in the Douro Valley without issue, there is a compelling argument for those who aren't as sure about driving in conditions such as these for taking a guided tour when visiting.

Guided tours include options like the following:

  • Douro Valley Small Group Tour with Lunch
  • Small Group Wine Lesson and Tasting in Pinhao
  • …and even day tours from Porto and multi-day tours !

When we were at a port tasting in Porto, we discussed with another traveler who was thinking about heading to the Douro Valley for a day tour and asked us about the options of driving vs taking a tour. Ultimately, we came to the recommendation that the best-case scenario would be to have a few days in the Douro Valley to get a full appreciation for it (again, it is huge- more time is always the answer), but if you were short on time and could only justify a day trip from Porto, we'd do it anyway- the Douro Valley truly is a spectacular place that all visitors should see independent of how.

  • We are presently researching private driver and custom tour operators to include more options in this guide. Many companies exist for day trips from Porto as noted above, but private pickups from within the Douro proper are less common online. For now, if you are thinking of hiring a driver over renting a car, we recommend reaching out to your tentative hotel first to discuss any offerings they may have. Ultimately, renting a car provides a convenience element that we cannot overstate despite the risks.
  • If you are a tour operator in the Douro Valley, please contact us to be featured.

So if your only option is a day tour from Porto, do it- no one ever regrets seeing the Douro Valley with their own eyes. But if you are weighing the options of driving vs. taking a tour, there may be some compelling reasons why a tour could be something to consider- driving here is difficult!

Wineries in the Douro Valley to Consider

Views from Sandeman

If you have decided to visit the Douro Valley by car and want to book wineries on publicly available tours, we have a selection of producers to consider. As you may already know, researching wineries and their tour offerings can be incredibly time-consuming, with many not offering tours for visitors at all. So in this section, we wanted to give you a shortlist of producers that historically offer tours/tastings outright.

The wineries featured below are ones we have personally researched and would consider when visiting the Douro Valley. These were found via a robust analysis of 3rd party reviews to identify high-quality producers and each winery's website to determine if they offer public tours. Other factors, such as price and range of styles, were not included. Sadly, of the 120+ wineries we researched for this section, the vast majority did not offer tours and were omitted.

Although we personally prefer boutique producers when we travel, we have included a few larger, volume-oriented producers within this list as well. Tours from these companies typically offer greater insight into how big producers operate within the region, and we always recommend visiting at least one or two in any given wine region to see the contrast between their methods and those of artisan/boutique producers (they're also quite gorgeous properties!).

A few examples on this list include Quinta do Seixo (which produces for Sandeman) and Quinta do Passadouro (which produces for Quinta do Noval)- their bottles are often broadly distributed and may be names you recognize; however, local tasting rooms may offer premium bottles you may be unfamiliar with, too.

Some of these may be open for walk-ins, many require advanced registration, and we recommend checking these offerings as specific details can change faster than we can keep up with. Remember that many wineries in the Douro Valley also offer tours in select languages throughout the day including Portuguese, English, and other European languages. If you have a language requirement, this could influence your schedule significantly. Wineries we have found through our research include:

  • Quinta do Vallado
  • Quinta do Cachao
  • Quinta Senhora do Rosario
  • Quinta do Crasto
  • Quinta do Tedo
  • Quinta do Passadouro
  • Quinta de la Rosa
  • Quinta do Seixo
  • Quinta das Carvalhas
  • Quinta do Infantado
  • Quinta do Portal
  • Quinta de S. Jose
  • Quinta dos Frades
  • Quinta da Ferradosa

Cellar Wine Tasting in the Douro

Finally, we would be remiss if we did not make recommendations for port houses to visit in Vila Nova de Gaia on the opposite side of the Douro River from Porto (~90 minutes from Pinhao town) as we know many travelers likely will stay a few days in Porto on any given trip.

These port houses are all within walking distance of old-town Porto and will complete your Douro Valley wine experience. These houses tend to be for the largest producers who historically aged their wines in Vila Nova de Gaia for centuries (newer producers, as mentioned above, likely age in the Douro proper due to utilizing modern air conditioning and refrigeration).

Graham's Porto House

Wineries you may want to check out include the following (note that some may offer tours with advanced registration required and others may only offer tastings for walk-ins). This list is not comprehensive and is simply a quick selection:

  • Kopke Port House
  • Quinta do Noval

Guided tours also exist that can take you on a small group tour of the Porto wine houses and can be a good option to hit a few cellars in a half day!

Buying and Shipping Wine in Portugal

Drinking wine on tour in the Douro

Most wineries in the Douro Valley offer cellar door sales of their products to visitors. Some even allow guests to walk in and buy bottles without taking a tour (this may vary and many wineries do not offer walk-in tastings- just sales).

As with most wine regions, buying at the winery itself offers reasonable prices and an assortment of bottles you may not be able to find anywhere else (more on that later). That being said, shipping options are often limited outside of the EU such that those who are visiting from abroad may need to find other solutions to taking wine home.

First, it is worth noting that  some wineries in the Douro Valley may have distributors in your home country already (e.g. USA), and depending on where you live in they may be able to ship wine directly to your home (in the USA, state-by-state laws may limit where some distributors operate). In this scenario, you typically place an order through the distributor directly (via the winery), and bottle prices will be increased significantly from what the winery charges as international shipping and winery/importer/distributor profits are also factored in.

The savings here, on the other hand, is that shipping is likely far cheaper than if a winery in the Douro Valley could ship abroad for you. So if you want to buy many bottles from a single producer, this could be a good option if it is something they have available. Conversely, a distributor may only carry select bottles from a winery's portfolio, so you may be limited on availability in this case, too.

Instead, you will likely want to consider options to bring home wines yourself. While your home country may have import limits before paying a duty (both official and unofficial- the USA is one liter per person but unofficially most agents don't care as long as it is within personal consumption levels, i.e. a couple of cases). We have three methods that we generally recommend:

  • Read our full Wine Skins review and packing tips here.
  • Wine Suitcases – Dedicated suitcases designed for wine bottles with 6 to 12-bottle capacity typically.
  • Wine Shipping Boxes – If you buy a sufficient number of bottles from a friendly winery, you may be able to ask for a shipping box to pack wines (generally up to 12 bottles per) and check on an airplane as you would a suitcase.

Inherently, these all come with pros and cons you have to consider. Wine Skins go into your existing checked bag, which is good for cutting down fees, but you need to be aware of total bag weight (bottles of wine tend to weigh about 2.6 lbs on average). Wine suitcases are rather expensive upfront costs for limited capacity (plus possibly checked bag fees both ways ). Wine shipping cases are often free if you can find a friendly winery (we've always been able to source them in our travels), but may require a checked bag fee on the return trip, too.

Douro wine

Finally, we should make a note about shopping for wine elsewhere in Portugal, as private wine stores are plenty. Our personal favorite store that we visited throughout the country is Garrafeira Nacional with several locations in the Lisbon area. These stores are temperature controlled (a rarity in Portugal it seems!), with respectable prices, and the best selection of wine we saw in the country. (Other stores we visited were not  temperature controlled and had rather extreme markups.)

We ended up buying two dozen bottles from them and were going to pay for international shipping (which they could arrange for an appreciable fee plus duty), but at the last minute, we decided to take the wine with us via wine shipping boxes we already had from wineries we visited in the Douro. Ultimately, they even offered free local delivery of our wine to our Lisbon hotel that night, too!

  • Wine stores like Garrafeira Nacional are excellent for finding wines from producers of all sizes; however, you may have better luck finding old bottles from well-known producers (say, a Kopke 1975) over a high-end bottle from a boutique producer you may visit in the Douro. When in doubt, buy direct when you are at the winery. But if you visit Lisbon before and after going to the Douro (as we did to make our international flight), you may want to visit the store before heading north and take an inventory of what is available to comparison shop.

Non-Wine Activities in the Douro

Douro Valley Boats

We are big proponents of always working in some non-wine related activities when traveling to wine regions. Despite being relatively rural, when you couple the gorgeous nature of wine regions with the tourism draw, there are almost always non-wine activities you should check out to take a break from the tasting (especially if you're traveling with someone who isn't as into wine as you are!).

The Douro Valley is no different.

A selection of activities that you may want to consider when staying in the region include:

  • A Douro River Cruise
  • 4×4 ATV Riding
  • Kayaking Douro River
  • …and day tours from Porto , too!

For those who have a rental car , be sure to drive to some of the many lookout points found throughout the Douro, too!

Overall, the Douro Valley is truly one of the most stunning wine regions on Earth. Throw in some delicious Port wine, a growing still wine scene, and intimate Quinta stays, and you truly have a wine region worth spending several days in if you can. Just watch out for the driving conditions here and be strategic in your hotel location, snag reservations for wineries as early as possible, and take it all in to get the most out of this gorgeous region!

Book a Day Tour

4 thoughts on “how to plan a wine tour in the douro valley – tips and advice”.

Thank you for the tips! Very great pointers! Do you have any advice on how many wineries and stops to do in a day? Just trying to gauge how many reservations to make in advance at the different spots. We have 4 days in total, one of which we’d like to spend in Porto and do the drive ourselves. We have a car. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.

It really depends on how far apart the wineries are as the driving distances can be quite long- especially if you have to cross the river. I’d say two is easy (one morning, one afternoon), three is pushing it, and any more you’d have to be very strategic (e.g. going to a wine bar/tasting in Pinhao town without reservation). Also, keep in mind drinking 20%+ ABV wine adds up fast!

This is a spectacular article, thanks very much!

Question: What do you guys think of doing a day’s work during the vindamas? Some vineyards/wineries offer working a morning picking, then helping to press grapes the old fashioned way by foot. This doesn’t sound much like working the vindange in France, a great experience but where I felt like a farm hand. Your thoughts?

That could be fun, but I also have to admit that being in any wine region during the harvest is a bit tricky because the wineries will be all hands on deck working and the roads will be loaded up with farm equipment. In the Douro in particular with how tight the roads are, there are some side considerations that could make the experience a bit harder. That said, I’d love to do it sometime. Also keep in mind that harvest time in the Douro is scorching hot!

The Douro Valley Wine Tour You Need to Know About

Dour Valley wine tour Croft vineyards

If you’re planning to visit Northern Portugal, a Douro Valley wine tour is one of the best experiences for wine lovers.

Not only is Douro Valley a UNESCO World Heritage site and the oldest demarcated wine region, but it’s also the only place in the world that makes port. Like how Champagne can only come from the region in France. Plus, there are some producers making delicious non-fortified wines at a great value.

Douro Valley is an easy day trip from the city of Porto. You could rent a car and drive out, but booking a full-day tour is a better way to see this beautiful region. The roads are narrow, steep, and winding. You do not want to be navigating this on your own after a few glasses of 20% ABV wine!

Side note: If you’re prone to motion sickness like I am, I swear by this anti-nausea wristband . I bring it with me on every trip I take, and it has saved me so many times.

I loved this small group tour that included a delicious lunch and a boat trip add-on. Our local guide, João, picked us up at our hotel in the morning. And my husband and I joined a few other couples in the comfortable van.

The drive is about two hours out to Douro Valley with beautiful scenery. Along the way, João shared fun facts about the history of the place, culture, and winemaking.

While you’re here, don’t miss taking my wine country destination quiz ! It will magically match your taste buds, travel style, and winederlust desires to reveal the wine region of your dreams. Plus, you’ll get my wine region guide to make planning a breeze. Take the quiz .

What is Port?

Before I get too far, let me go over a few quick facts about port in case you’re not familiar with it.

  • Port, or Porto as it’s known locally, is a fortified wine, meaning they add alcohol (a neutral grape spirit – usually brandy) about halfway through the fermentation process. This kills the yeast before it can finish eating the sugar in the wine, leaving a naturally sweet wine with a whopping 19-22% alcohol.
  • Port was originally fortified to prevent spoilage during transit on the Douro River down to the Porto Port houses in Vila Nova de Gaia (across the river from the city of Porto).
  • In Portuguese, a Quinta is a wine-producing estate. They’re classified on a scale of A to F (with A being the best wineries) based on categories like age of the vines, vine density, soil type, and grape varieties.
  • Touriga Nacional is the preferred grape in port wine production but it’s difficult to grow so Touriga Franca is most common. There are also 100 other grape varieties allowed.
  • Port can be made in red, white, and rosé styles. Red is most common and you’ll see ruby or tawny versions (keep reading for more on that).

Okay, now back to the tour…

Which wine region should you visit? Click to take the quiz.

Quinta do Tedo Port Tasting

After a scenic drive and quick pick-up of the last couple at the nearby train station, we arrived at Quinta do Tedo, our first winery visit. They are a class A quinta that makes a few different port styles, as well as other non-fortified wines with the grapes not used in their port.

The visit started with a tour of the property, overlooking the rows of vines cresting over the rolling hills.

View from Quinta do Tedo

Grapes are hand-harvested and then placed in large stone troughs called lagares and manually crushed by human feet (yes, you read that right!). This is the traditional method called foot treading still used by some of the high-quality port producers. It helps bring color out of the skins without extracting unwanted flavors.

Eight to twelve people foot tread each lagar for two to three hours a day over three to four days. Sounds exhausting to me, but our host assured us that they keep spirits up with music, dancing, and plenty of glasses of port!

Next, we toured the cellar. We learned how ruby port retains its reddish color and fruit flavors with the use of large old oak barrels. This minimizes the effect that oxygen and oak can have on the flavors of the wine.

On the flip side, tawny port gets its brownish hue and develops flavors like walnut, coffee, chocolate, and caramel by aging in smaller barrels called pipes.

Quinta do Tedo wine cellar

Most ports are a blend of different years. But our host explained that in great years, a port producer can decide to declare a vintage and make a port using grapes only from that year’s harvest.

The wine then goes through an assessment process to be approved as a vintage port. On average, most producers only have three vintages per decade and these wines improve in the bottle with age.

The tour ended back in the tasting room with a sampling of three ports.

Quinta do Tedo ruby port tasting

The rosé was slightly chilled and refreshing with raspberry and red fruit flavors. The ruby also had some red fruit notes, plus black cherry and a hint of orange. The tawny was my favorite, with aromas of hazelnut and spices, and flavors of dried fruit.

Boat Cruise on Douro River & Lunch in Pinhão

Our next stop was an add-on to the tour, but everyone in our group opted to do the boat ride. I’d recommend it if your budget allows, although if you decide not to, you can explore the cute village of Pinhão during your free time.

Douro River boat

As I mentioned earlier, the Douro River was important for port as this was how they transported it to the shippers in Vila Nova de Gaia. Today, the flat-bottomed boats called “barcos rabelos” are only used for racing and other displays. But the boat tour gives you a feeling of what it might have been like.

Floating along on the waters of the Douro River, we were surrounded by emerald slopes filled with rows of vines and picturesque quintas. It’s truly one of the most beautiful places I’ve been.

João passed around glasses of port for us to enjoy during the ride — a perfect aperitif to lunch.

Back on shore, it was a quick drive to the restaurant, where we had several choices of traditional Douro cuisine. My husband was brave enough to go for the octopus, which he’d never had before. This earned him the endearing nickname “Octopus Man” for the rest of our tour.

Quinta do Jalloto Wine Tasting

After lunch it was back on the road to the second vineyard. The ride up was particularly steep, but the spectacular views of the terraced vineyards were well worth it.

Right off the parking lot is one of the most beautiful landscapes in all of Douro Valley. You can see all the way down to the main town of Pinhão and follow the winding river through the hillsides.

Wine Travelista at Quinta do Jalloto

Once we had our fill of the photo op, we were greeted by our host for a short tour. Quinta do Jalloto is a small, family-owned winery that makes non-fortified wines.

Like Quinta do Tedo, they still follow the traditional methods of hand-picking during harvest season and foot treading to produce high-quality small-batch wines.

Quinta do Jalloto vineyard

The family also makes their own honey and olive oil. We learned that bees pollinate cover crops that grow around the vines and the olive trees help shelter the vines against strong winds.

Our tasting was on the terrace with more breathtaking views. We sampled their white, rosé, and red wines — all very tasty and they went well with the olive oil, bread, and honey pairings. The wines are very affordable and we grabbed a bottle of the rosé to take with us.

Croft Port Tasting

I’m not sure if this is usually included in the tour, but we were running ahead of schedule so at the end of the day João made a quick stop at the Quinta da Roeda estate. The vineyard was acquired in 1889 and is currently owned by Croft.

We enjoyed tasting a couple of their ports in the restored visitors center, formerly the estate’s stables. The highlight for me was exploring the grounds. It looks like something out of a postcard!

Croft vineyard tour

From there we headed back to Porto, napping along the way. We were dropped off in the early evening at our hotel. And João and our new vacation friends bid farewell to the “Octopus Man.”

If you’re interested in this full day guided tour, here’s where you can book it .

Also, don’t miss my post on the best Porto port houses for tastings and tours.

Where to Stay in Porto, Portugal

Most of the hotels and historical attractions are located on the Porto side of the river. The hills are pretty steep on the roads leading away from the river, so if walking uphill is not your thing then stay closer to the river.

Or if you want to be closer to the port wine cellars, you can choose a place on the other side of the river in Vila Nova de Gaia. There’s a tram you can take up to the bridge to cross over to the Porto side, where you’ll have incredible views of the two cities.

For hotel reservations, I like to use Booking.com. Just enter “Porto, Portugal” and select your dates below to see available options.

BTW, if you’re a cat person, Porto is cat heaven. This little mustachioed guy kept visiting us on our patio. And then brought five of his friends!

Are you looking for the Best Douro Valley Wine Tour?

Earlier this year, we spent 5 days in the Douro Valley in Portugal exploring everything to do there, taking Douro Valley Wine Tours , and trying all the different types of Port.

We love wine – In fact, Nicholas is a Sommelier !

We have explored renowned wine regions like Napa, Sonoma, Willamette Valley, and the Finger Lakes in the US too. However, our winery tour experiences in the Douro Valley stand unmatched.

The Douro River, slicing through the beautiful landscape , elevates your time there. The opportunity to taste Port wine directly from the source in the Douro Valley is truly extraordinary.

Our goal is to help you decide which wine tour to take and how to spend your time exploring this amazing region.

We will provide you with the best half-day, full-day, from Porto, boat, train tours, and even self-guided stops to help you choose which option works best for your trip.

Best Wine Tours in the Douro Valley Overview

How to choose a douro valley wine tour.

Selecting the perfect Douro Valley wine tour requires careful consideration to ensure an enriching and memorable experience.

We recommend evaluating a tour based on the following categories: the wineries, the port, if it includes a river cruise, the food, and of course cost.

Picking a reputable company is so important! Below is the company we trust to give you the best experience: Portugal Excellence Tours

The Wineries

Begin by researching the wineries included in the tour itinerary.

Wine barrels filled with rich, aged port, a testament to the artistry of Douro Valley. Each barrel holds the essence of tradition and craftsmanship, inviting you to explore the heritage of Douro Valley Wine Tours through the exquisite flavors within.

Most tours state which wineries they are going to in the description. Look for a balance of renowned estates and hidden gems to get a diverse tasting experience.

The best tours curate visits to wineries celebrated for their exceptional wines, allowing you to savor the Douro’s finest vintages.

Ideally, if you are taking a full-day tour, you would want to visit at least 3 wineries in that time.

Avoid wine tours like this one that have lots of reviews, but are very vague about which wineries or restaurants they are visiting.

We also recommend finding tours that offer all types of Port.

Kelsea enjoyed Tawny Port while Nicholas liked Ruby Port more. We both like Rosé Port the most.

A delectable spread featuring a sampling of Douro Valley's finest port complemented by artisanal cheeses and crisp crackers.

You want to make sure the tour you book will give you tastings of all types, younger and vintage too , so that you find which one you like the most for the rest of your Portugal trip.

The River Cruise

If you like to be on the water, prioritize tours that incorporate a boat excursion along the Douro River .

This not only provides a unique perspective of the stunning landscapes but also adds a layer of relaxation to your journey . We absolutely loved the one we took!

The food in the Douro Valley is incredible , so opt for tours that include stops with well-reviewed food options.

A delightful scene of a traditional Portuguese lunch, featuring an array of authentic dishes that showcase the rich culinary heritage of Douro Valley. From flavorful mains to vibrant sides, experience the essence of Portuguese gastronomy in this inviting spread.

Sampling authentic Portuguese cuisine complements the wine tastings , providing a holistic understanding of the region’s flavors.

While budget considerations are important, remember that quality often comes with a price .

The Douro Valley Wine Tours we took were by far the most expensive tours we took during our month in Portugal and they were 1,000% worth it.

Our experience in the Douro Valley taught us that spending a bit more on a comprehensive wine tour is worthwhile . The memories forged, the exclusive tastings , the amazing food, and the picturesque boat ride created an unparalleled winery trip.

We strongly recommend having a designated driver or joining a guided tour to fully savor the Douro’s beauty without compromising safety.

If you do decide to go on a self-guided tour with a designated driver, here are our driving instructions and favorite stops in the Douro Valley:

1st Stop: Douro Valley Winery – Quinta da Roêda

Established in 1811, Quinta da Roêda stands as one of Douro Valley’s most famous Port estates , often hailed as the jewel of Douro.

A captivating image showcasing the elegance and charm of this historic estate in the heart of Douro Valley. Surrounded by lush vineyards and scenic beauty, the estate stands as a testament to the rich winemaking heritage of the region, inviting exploration and appreciation.

Spanning 109 hectares, Quinta da Roeda combines modern and sustainable vineyards with historic 19th-century plantings.

This winery is where we fell in love with Rosé Port , but they do have very good Vintage Ports as well that they make the traditional way using lagares .

We think this is the perfect place in Pinhão to start your day!

2nd Stop: Explore Lamego

A captivating snapshot of the historic town of Lamego nestled in the Douro Valley. The image captures the architectural beauty and cultural richness of Lamego, inviting exploration of its charming streets, historic landmarks, and the unique character that defines this enchanting destination.

If you are driving with a designated driver, Lamego is a must-visit destination in the heart of Portugal’s wine country.

You won’t be drinking Port in a winery there, but attractions like the Lamego Castle and Lamego Cathedral offer rich historical exploration.

The highlight of the town for us was the 686-step staircase that ascends from Lamego to the Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Good Remedy).

An enchanting view of the ornate staircase leading to the Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios in Lamego. The meticulously designed steps and architectural details create a mesmerizing ascent, inviting visitors to experience the beauty and spiritual significance of this iconic pilgrimage site in the Douro Valley.

The monumental staircase is flanked by azulejo tiles and features panoramic vistas that left us in awe.

3rd Stop: Lunch at The River Restaurant

An image showcasing a delectable dessert served during a Douro Valley Wine Tour lunch. The artfully presented sweet treat adds a delightful finale to the culinary experience, embodying the region's gastronomic excellence and providing a tasteful conclusion to your wine tour adventure.

We love to stop in Peso da Régua for lunch if we haven’t already filled up on wine pairings at a winery.

Nestled in a repurposed train station in Peso da Régua, The River Restaurant offers a unique dining experience with a view of the river and train tracks.

The octopus and desserts stand out as exceptional highlights in this historic setting. Make sure to get a reservation ahead of time.

4th Stop: Douro Valley Winery – Quinta da Pacheca

Quinta da Pacheca, established in the early 20th century , holds a rich winemaking heritage in the Douro Valley.

A captivating glimpse of the renowned Quinta da Pacheca estate in the Douro Valley. The image showcases the vineyard-draped landscape and the distinguished architecture of the winery, inviting exploration and appreciation of the rich winemaking heritage that defines this iconic destination.

The estate’s wine history dates back even further, as it played a crucial role in developing the first-ever Demarcated Region in the world.

Today, the winery is known for its commitment to both tradition and innovation .

Their lagares , used for traditional grape treading , were the largest we had seen. Descending into the expansive wine cellar added to the awe, showcasing the estate’s commitment to preserving heritage and crafting exceptional wines.

5th Stop: Douro Valley Winery – Quinta do Vallado

A picturesque view capturing the beauty of Quinta do Vallado, nestled in the heart of Douro Valley. Surrounded by vineyards and framed by the scenic landscape, the estate's architecture reflects a blend of tradition and modernity, inviting visitors to experience the legacy of winemaking in this renowned Portuguese wine region.

This historic estate in Peso da Régua has been producing wines for over 300 years.

Quinta do Vallado is celebrated for its commitment to sustainability and offers visitors guided tours, tastings, and a beautiful setting along the Douro River.

This is a perfect stop with sunset views of the Douro Valley at your last winery of the day before dinner.

6th Stop: Dinner at DOC

DOC is a renowned restaurant in the Douro Valley in Folgosa, led by Chef Rui Paula.

Known for its spectacular location on the river , it offers a lovely experience with extreme attention to detail that beautifully complements the region’s wines .

The restaurant is celebrated for its exquisite dishes, showcasing a blend of traditional Portuguese flavors and Chef Rui Paula’s innovative culinary approach.

The Douro Valley is a part of our recommended 8-day itinerary in Portugal. We have all the transportation, accommodation, restaurant, and activity tips here!

Douro Valley History

The history of the Douro Valley is deeply rooted, spanning over 2000 years, with traces of viticulture dating back to the Roman era.

However, it was in the 17th century that the region underwent a significant transformation with the emergence of Port wine.

A captivating view of meticulously arranged terraced vineyards in the Douro Valley. The landscape showcases the artistry of winemaking, as the vines cascade down the hillsides, creating a breathtaking mosaic that reflects the rich viticultural heritage and natural beauty of this renowned wine region.

The unique microclimate and terroir of the valley proved ideal for producing this fortified wine, leading to a surge in vineyard cultivation.

The construction of socalcos , the traditional terraced vineyards , became a defining feature, showcasing the ingenious agricultural engineering of the locals.

In recognition of its cultural and viticultural significance, the Douro Valley earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2001 and remains the only wine region in the world as a world heritage site.

This acknowledgment reflects the centuries-old tradition of winemaking , the breathtaking landscapes shaped by terraced slopes, and the e nduring legacy of Port wine , which has become synonymous with the region’s identity and global acclaim.

The Douro Valley stands as a testament to the harmonious interplay between human ingenuity and the fertile land , creating a timeless tapestry of history, culture, and wine.

Winemaking in Douro Valley

Winemaking in the Douro Valley is a meticulous artistry deeply ingrained in the region’s history.

The unique topography of the valley , characterized by socalcos or terraced vineyards, is ideal for viticulture .

To make Port the traditional way, you start by getting freshly picked bunches and placing them in shallow granite tanks called lagares .

An evocative image capturing shallow granite tanks, known as lagares, used in traditional winemaking processes. These vessels play a pivotal role in grape stomping and fermentation, embodying the timeless craftsmanship and heritage of winemaking in the Douro Valley.

When the lagar is full, the grapes are gently trodden on by foot in two stages . This crushes the grapes and releases the pulp and juice.

The first stage is done in a line of people walking across the grapes, while the second is done with individuals moving around haphazardly, sometimes with music and dance .

The next day, the fermentation starts and the yeast begins to turn the sugar of the grape into alcohol. This process generates heat, which causes the grape skins to release their aroma.

The skins then rise to the surface, but are manually resubmerged using wooden plungers called macacos. After about three days, half of the natural grape sugar and converted to alcohol by fermentation.

The wine is then combined with a clean, colorless grape spirit, at a proportion of about 1/5 spirit and 4/5 wine. This process of adding the spirit is called fortification. Fortification stops the fermentation so that all the sugar doesn’t turn into alcohol.

This fortification process is why Port is higher in alcohol content and sweeter than other wines.

This fortified wine is then put into wooden vats to be aged, usually in a cellar. After aging, it is often blended and then bottled.

Wooden vats gracefully aging port wine in a cellar, embodying the refined artistry of Douro Valley winemaking. The image captures the serene atmosphere of the cellar, where the rich flavors and distinctive characteristics of the port evolve over time, creating a masterpiece of craftsmanship and tradition.

Port wine, a cornerstone of Douro winemaking, comes in various styles. Ruby Port, with its vibrant and fruity profile, contrasts with the nutty richness of Tawny Port , aged to perfection in wooden barrels.

Vintage Ports , crafted from exceptional harvests, boast intense flavors and longevity .

The recent emergence of Rosé Port adds a contemporary twist , featuring a refreshing and fruit-forward character.

However, the Douro Valley is not solely dedicated to Port production. It’s a versatile winemaking region, producing a diverse array of still wines.

The local grape varieties, including Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, contribute to reds and whites, reflecting the terroir’s complexity and the winemakers’ dedication to crafting a diverse and compelling vinous tapestry.

Douro Valley Wine vs. Port Wine

Douro Valley wine and Port wine share the same breathtaking terroir but diverge in production and style. Both benefit from the region’s unique socalcos and grape varieties.

Douro Valley’s non-Port wines prominently feature indigenous grape varieties like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz for reds . In whites, Viosinho, Rabigato, and Gouveio shine.

However, while Douro Valley wines embrace a broader spectrum, from robust reds to crisp whites, Port wine stands out for its fortified nature.

Best Time to Visit the Douro Valley

The ideal time to visit the Douro Valley is September .

During this month, the vineyards are vibrant with the hues of ripening grapes , and the weather is pleasantly warm without the peak summer heat.

A captivating view of the Douro River, winding through the picturesque landscapes of Douro Valley.

Harvest season begins, offering a unique opportunity to witness the winemaking process in action . The landscape is a picturesque blend of lush greenery and terraced vineyards, creating a stunning backdrop for exploration.

Some wineries even offer experiences during this time where you can tread on the picked grapes in the lagares !

Spring, particularly April and May , is another excellent time to visit the Douro Valley. The landscape blooms with wildflowers , and the weather is mild, making it ideal for exploring vineyards and drinking Port on the beautiful outdoor patios.

Be prepared for it potentially being a rainy, foggy, or gloomy day any day of the year . The persistent moisture, prevalent in this region, contributes to the ideal conditions for grape cultivation, making it an excellent environment for thriving vineyards.

Don’t let the thought of gloomy days deter you though! We had “gloomy” days every day we were there and had an amazing and delightful time !

Getting to the Douro Valley

Getting to the Douro Valley can pose challenges, as it lacks a major airport directly serving the region.

Travelers often fly into Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport and then embark on a scenic journey by car, train, or boat to reach the Douro Valley.

Getting to the Douro Valley by boat provides a scenic and leisurely journey along the Douro River.

A lively scene capturing people boarding a boat on the Douro River. The anticipation is palpable as passengers embark on a scenic journey, ready to explore the beauty of Douro Valley from the water, creating memories against the backdrop of charming landscapes.

The primary embarkation point is typically Porto . There are no public boat options . If you’re looking for a day trip, your best options are one of these tours:

  • From Porto: Régua and Douro Valley Scenic Cruise
  • From Porto: Pinhão and Douro Valley Scenic Boat Tour

Alternatively, you can consider a river cruise option that will be a multi-day cruise along the Douro River. The best options, in our opinion, are by Vikings Cruises.

You can take a train from Porto’s São Bento station to Regua or Pinhão, the two main towns in the Douro Valley. São Bento station is a historic site itself, known for its stunning azulejo tiles.

The train journey from Porto to Pinhão typically takes around 3 to 3.5 hours

From Regua or Pinhão, you will need to take a guided tour, bus, taxi, or boat to reach specific wineries or destinations within the Douro Valley.

Bus services from Porto are available but we would not recommend them .

The picturesque but challenging terrain might not suit everyone’s comfort level, especially if prone to motion sickness. It is a VERY windy drive.

Rodonorte and Rede Expressos both offer bus routes from Porto to Douro Valley departing multiple times a day . You can expect your bus ticket to cost around 20 € round-trip.

We drive to the Douro Valley and would recommend exercising caution when driving here – the roads are narrow and very windy.

A captivating view of a vineyard in Douro Valley, where lush green vines stretch across terraced hillsides. The image showcases the natural beauty and meticulous cultivation that define the winemaking heritage of this renowned Portuguese region.

If you’re renting a car, we strongly recommend renting with Discover Cars and selecting the coverage plan !

Additionally, be aware that certain tolls around the Douro Valley allow you to simply drive through, as they automatically read your car for payment.

  • The scenic journey from Porto to the Douro Valley by car is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, covering a distance of around 120 to 150 kilometers.
  • Head east on the A4 or A1 highway, depending on your exact location in Porto.
  • Connect to the A4, following signs for Amarante.
  • Continue east on the A4 until reaching the IP4; then, head towards Vila Real.
  • Follow signs to enter the Douro Valley.
  • The drive from Lisbon to the Douro Valley takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, covering a distance of around 500 kilometers.
  • Travel north on the A1 highway towards Porto.
  • Near Aveiro, take the A25 east toward Viseu.
  • Connect to the A24 heading north towards Lamego and then proceed to Peso da Régua.
  • The journey from Madrid to the Douro Valley takes approximately 6 to 7 hours, covering a distance of around 600 kilometers.
  • Take the A-6 towards the northwest.
  • Near Benavente, Spain, connect to the A-52 towards the Portugal border.
  • After crossing the border, take the A4, then the A24, and follow signs to Peso da Régua.

Portugal Travel Planning Guide

🚙💨  Is it safe to rent a car in Portugal?

Yes  —  Renting a car  is a necessity in most of Portugal if traveling between cities!

If you want to go on day trips or adventures outside of the major cities, you can use public transportation, but we recommend renting a car. Discover Cars is our go-to choice for car rentals in Portugal.

📲  Will my phone work in Portugal?

Maybe, but it will be expensive — Depending on your provider, plans can charge you $10 per day while in Europe.

To use your phone in Portugal and save money, we recommend an eSim with Airalo . Airalo simplifies the steps and provides you with all the necessary data for convenient travel.

There is not a lot of free WIFI in Portugal, so you’ll need your phone for navigating.

🌐 Do I need a VPN when on the internet in Portugal?

While abroad, we consistently prioritize our online security by using a VPN to appear as if we’re streaming from the US and protect ourselves from cybercrime.

NordVPN serves as an incredibly convenient solution for both mobile phones and laptops, effortlessly ensuring our safety while browsing or streaming.

🏩  What’s the best way to book my Portugal accommodations?

Our go-to for Portuguese hotels is  Booking.com . They offer the widest range of choices, and their filtering system simplifies the process of discovering the perfect accommodation for your needs.

✈️  What’s the best site to buy f lights to Portugal?

For finding cheap flights to Portugal, we recommend  Kayak . Their awesome multi-city flight search and handy price notifications help us save big, allowing us to splurge on other adventures once we arrive.

TAP Air Portugal is usually our airline of choice while in Portugal.

🚐 Should I book tours in Portugal? Do the guides speak English?

We LOVE taking tours in Portugal.

We prefer to book our tours on Viator and GetYourGuide for easy searching, trusted reviews, and transparent pricing. We always filter for the tours that are offered in English.

For free walking tours in English, we always book through GuruWalk .

🚑  Should I buy Portugal travel insurance?

100% YES!  — Portugal has a publicly funded healthcare system known as the Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS), which provides universal healthcare coverage to all Portuguese citizens and legal residents!

Foreigners visiting need travel insurance in case anything happens on their visit. We recommend  Safety Wing  – they provide general travel coverage as well as medical !

💧 Can you drink the water in Portugal?

Sometimes  — In many areas of Portugal, the water is safe to drink. However, there can be variations in water quality from one location to another.

In some rural or remote areas, or in older buildings with outdated plumbing systems, water quality might not be as high.

For an extra layer of protection, we recommend always using a  LifeStraw Go Series to stay safe and hydrated.

🎫  Do I need a visa for Portugal?

Likely Not  — US passport holders don’t need Portuguese visas for travel less than 3 months . If you plan to stay for more than 3 months, you will be considered a resident and must have an entrance visa .

Final thoughts on Porto and The Douro Valley winery tours

Douro is the oldest demarcated and regulated wine region in the world, declared in 1756 and made a World Heritage by UNESCO in 2001.

I have visited Porto a few times over the past few years and must admit that wine tasting tours in Douro Valley are a must. There is no better way to experience the rich culture and take in the beautiful views than with a glass of quality port wine. Whether you fancy a private tour or a short wine-tasting stop, Porto has it all.

Of course, you can visit some of the best wineries in Douro Valley on your own, but you won’t be able to enjoy the tastings. Personally, I always opt for a tour when in Porto. This way, I get to enjoy the fantastic views, learn about wine making and taste some quality wine.

If you are visiting Porto from Lisbon, the easiest way to explore the Douro region is with a car rental . I always find the best deals with DiscoverCars and can highly recommend them. If you are coming from Peniche and the Berlengas , Sintra , Lagos , or Albufeira , then the A1 and A2 highways are the fastest to travel on.

How to plan a DIY Douro Valley train trip from Porto

Have you decided to explore the Douro Valley while you’re in Porto?    There are many planned excursions with set timetables so if you prefer to go at your own pace, why not create a schedule.    Here’s how to plan a DIY Douro Valley train trip from Porto, Portugal.

While I was in Porto, I decided to do just that – visit the Douro Valley to my own schedule.    After doing some quick research while in Porto, I booked my train tickets.

The Douro Valley

The Douro Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has within it a breathtaking stretch of river called the Douro River.   Known as the Port Wine making region – and one of the oldest wine regions in the world – the Douro Valley is home to a number of vineyards and winery companies along its river bank.

Picturesque

The Douro is one of those places you just have to visit once you see pictures of it.   It’s wrapped with steep hills, deep valleys and the winding river that runs through it and under the eye-catching Gustave Eiffel Bridge.

Planning and timing

If you’re up for making your own way to the Douro Valley, then it’s best to get up early and take one of the first trains.  You can use the Porto São Bento or Campanhã train stations.

Sao Bento train station - Porto_RiA Vistas

The journey itself is just under two hours depending on the train you take.  If you get a train just after 9am (you can check  train timetables here ) you should get to the Douro Valley just before lunchtime.  I took the 9:10am train and arrived in Pinhão minutes after 11:30am.

Train tips

  • Sit on right-hand side of train for the best views as you enter the valley
  • Here’s a neat trick – if you’re in any of the seats right before the last ones in any carriage, take hold of the handle and move the seat in the opposite direction to face it the way you want
  • Sit on the left-hand side when travelling back to Porto for views of the Douro
  • Book your ticket the day before you travel.  The queues in the station can be really long in the morning and you want to make sure you don’t miss your train.

What to do in the Douro Valley

The Douro Valley is amazing – the view, the atmosphere.  Once you get there you can wander the few shops along the main road and walk by the river.  You should also try to do an activity or two.  I knew I wanted to do wine tasting and go on a boat ride at the time I did my research.

Take the Magnifico Douro Boat Tour

I decided to do the Magnifico Douro Boat Tour , a boat ride along part of the Douro River.  You can pick a one- or two-hour ride depending on the time you have.   Catch the boat from Pinhão and during the trip you’ll pass many vineyard buildings wineries such as Bomfim and Carvalhas.  A one-hour journey starts from €11 (at the time of writing 2022).

Sitting on the Magnifico Douro Boat Tour - Douro River_RiA Vistas

You’ll travel on a Rabelo Boat – and electric boat.   It’s such a beautiful boat and doesn’t disturb the calm and picturesque surroundings of the valley. The journey starts at Pinhão and the boat travels towards Romaniera and back.  It was such a relaxing experience with fantastic weather.  I loved it!

The tour comes with the option to download the Magnífico Douro Tour app, available on iOS and Android.  It’s an audio guide that you’ll be able to listen to as you’re on the tour which tells you what you’re seeing along the way.  It’s available in multiple languages including Portuguese, English, French and Spanish.

The Magnifico Douro Tour runs every hour and operates daily (except Christmas Day) as long as the conditions on the river allow.  You can book any of the  Rabelo Boat tours here .

NOTE:   They have since changed the way you book.  Whether it’s online via their website (where I had booked) or even through partners like  GetYourGuide ,  they require a minimum of two people per booking.  But don’t worry my solo travellers out there!  Just drop them an email in advance to let them know the situation and that you’ll be travelling alone.  Email:  [email protected] .

Quintas das Carvalhas Wine Tasting Tour

I chose a wine tasting tour with Quintas das Carvalhas.  I booked the Panoramic Minibus Tour in advance for €12.50  which is available every hour (at the time of booking) and starts at Pinhão station.

You’ll need to make a reservation in advance and can do so  [email protected] .

As part of the panoramic bus tour, we travelled 550 metres up into the hills of the valley.   At the peak we had a 360-degree view.  Absolutely stunning, breath-taking views over the Douro River.

We learnt that they classify grapes from ‘A-F’.  ‘A’ is the best as those grapes are in the sun all the time.  In a good year, they can produce seven million bottles of wine.  In the middle of September they harvest for about six weeks with the help of 45 workers.  The company also harvests olives.

Panoramic Bus Tour - Douro Valley - Porto_RiA Vistas

After the bus tour, we headed back to the Quinta do Bomfim.  This was the winery where we would do the wine tasting part of the tour.  We were served with glasses of Porto wine to taste and chattered in the bar area.

Travel tips

  • Take some snacks and a drink with you.  Not all of the tours will provide food but there are places to eat along the main road.
  • Wear comfortable shoes as you may be on your feet at times if you go on any tours in the vineyards
  • Book your activities in advance where you can.  The area is busy if you’re visiting in the summer months.
  • The trains that depart Pinhão in the early evening will be quite packed.  Everyone will return from their tours and make their way back to Porto.  Get there well ahead of time before the train arrives to help guarantee a seat.

Douro Valley Wine Tours from Pinhao and Regua

douro wine tour by train

If you’re considering staying in the Douro Valley, you’ll likely find it convenient to join a wine tour that departs from either Pinhão or Peso da Régua ( Régua) , two key towns in the region .

While it is possible to explore wineries on your own from Pinhão or Régua (see my articles 5 Best Wineries to Visit Near Pinhão and Douro Valley Wineries Without a Car ).

B y joining a wine tour, you’ll have the opportunity to visit multiple wineries, taste a variety of wines, get to see the valley from from the best viewpoints. You will also skip organisation part and enjoy the scenic beauty of the Douro Valley without worrying about driving.

While many group wine tours originate in Porto, there are only a few wine tours that start from within the Douro Valley itself.

Private tours can pick you up in Porto as well as at your accommodation in the Douro Valley.

Douro Valley Tours from Pinhão

douro wine tour by train

A local guide would will pick you up at the  Pinhão  train station or the river port, take you to visit 2-3 wineries and organize lunch at a restaurant or at a winery.

For example, this top-rated Private Tour of Pinhão Vineyards  is carried our by local guides and includes a visit of a typical village of the Douro Valley, stops at viewpoints and historical monuments, walk in the vineyeards, visit of a quinta with a tasting of Port wines as well as a selection of wines from small producers.

Another option from Pinhão is a  Tour in 4×4 car  that will take you off the beaten path around the historic village and the vineyards.

If you make your way to the village, consider taking  a boat tour  from Pinhão harbor or join a  hiking tour  that includes a stop Casal de Loivos viewpoint.

I climbed from from Pinh ã o to  Casal de Loivos in February.  It is a challenging uphill hike, but the views from the miradouro are well worth the effort. If you are not up for a climb, which I do not recommend during the hot summer months, this guided walking tour originating in Pinhão takes you uphill in a Tesla car so you can enjoy the view without a difficult climb.

Douro Valley Tours from Régua

douro wine tour by train

The town of Régua is easily accessible by train from Porto, with a journey time of approximately 2 hours. This is a convenient option for those who prefer not to drive.

The town itself is relatively large and may not be of particular interest, however, the area around  Régua  has a number of famous wineries including  Quinta da Pacheca and Quinta do Vallado .

douro wine tour by train

Once you arrive in Régua, to reach wineries you could hire a taxi.  In my experience, there are always plenty of taxis at the Régua train station.

However, it would be easier from a logistics perspective to get on a tour. There are a number of wine tour offerings from Régua.

Private tours offer pick up at the train station or at your hotel near Régua, Vila Real or Lamego.  The Program typically includes visiting 2-3 quintas, tastings of wine and local specialties, such as olives, olive oils jams, breads, almonds and walnuts, and Douro river boat tours.

Below are just some of the options.  Also, check out  my private tours .

My favourite circle path in the area is the Lamego trail that starts near the church of Samodães with a walk along the river, climbs with great views and passing by the beautiful  Six Senses .

RECOMMENDED HOTELS IN REGUA AREA:

Quinta do Vallado : This famous wine estate offers rooms in a historic and in modern setting. Guests can enjoy wine tastings, explore the vineyards, and relax by the swimming pool.

Wine House Hotel – Quinta da Pacheca : Situated in Lamego, a short drive from Régua, this hotel is unique with rooms set in gigantic wine barrels. However, they also offer modern rooms. There is a restaurant serving regional cuisine, abundant wine tastings, and stunning views of the Douro Valley

Best Things to do in Douro Valley Portugal

L isted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Douro Valley Portugal is the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. Nestled in Northern Portugal, the valley is known for its beautiful lookout points, charming villages and abundant wineries. About an hour from the city of Porto, the Douro wine region can easily be visited on a day trip or a long weekend trip while visiting Portugal . Viking River Cruises also offers an intimate longship journey through the Douro.

Table wine and port wine are produced here and shipped all over the world. Spend the day exploring vineyards, crushing grapes with your feet or sampling local wines. In addition to wine tasting , visitors can take a river cruise on the Douro River, go hiking and visit a natural park. Plus, be sure to explore the valley’s villages. Read about these activities, and more, with our roundup of the 6 best things to do in Douro Valley Portugal.

1. Visit a winery

A trip to Douro Valley would be incomplete without a visit to a winery. Quinta da Pacheca in Lamego sits in the heart of the Douro Valley. One of the region’s oldest wine estates, Quinta da Pacheca is a winery, hotel and olive producer all-in-one. Wine lovers can take a guided tour of the winery, book a tasting, go grape stomping, participate in an olive harvesting experience and more. The wine hotel features traditional guest rooms or for something a little more adventurous, guests can go glamping in huge wine barrels.

In addition, Quinta Nova is another hotel and winery that goes way back. Here, visitors can go wine tasting, take a wine-making class, enjoy a vineyard tour at sunset and order traditional Portuguese food at the winery restaurant. Plus, there is a museum associated with the winery that preserves its history.

Quinta do Seixo

Visit Quinta do Seixo for beautiful views over the valley. This winery is part of the Sandeman brand, a popular port wine producer. Here, visitors can have a picnic in the vineyard, take a guided tour of the estate or book a tasting. Quinta do Vale Meao is another famous winery. In the city of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, this winery is family-owned and a great place to learn about Douro Valley wine production.

2. Take a boat tour through the Douro River

One of the easiest ways to see the Douro Valley is from a boat trip down the Douro River, which stretches from the Soria Province in Spain to Porto. In fact, wine was traditionally carried down this river in Rabelo boats, long flat boats, recognizable by the long oar protruding from the back. The wine was then stored in Porto wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. Today, many boats make the same journey, this time carrying tourists as part of organized river cruises.

There are short boat trips that depart from Pinhão or longer ones that leave from Porto. Many tours include wine tasting and lunch. The longer tours from Porto typically make stops at some of the smaller villages along the river valley. Click here  to select the right tour for you.

3. Go to a lookout

The Douro Valley is known for its amazing lookout points. São Leonardo da Galafura is one of the most famous lookouts. Here, visitors will be greeted by stunning views of terraced vineyards, rolling hills and the meandering Douro River. There is also a chapel and a picnic area.

São Salvador do Mundo is another breathtaking viewpoint. It’s perched at the top of a hill, and although you can drive up part of the way, you’ll have to walk the rest, but the views are certainly worth the walk. The Valeira Dam, open countryside, lush greenery, rugged slopes and the beautiful Douro River are all visible from the viewpoint.

The Miradouro de Casal de Loivos is another amazing place to soak up the Douro Valley’s natural beauty. It’s located near the village of Casal de Loivos and can be reached by car. From here, viewers can look over Pinhão, the Douro River and several wineries spanning the hillside.

4. Visit the Douro International Natural Park

Immerse yourself in the valley’s untouched nature while hiking in the Douro International Natural Park. This protected area is close to the Spanish border and features a deep river canyon, majestic cliffs, olive trees and many different animal species, including wolves, wild boar, cave bats and Egyptian vultures.

For panoramic views of the canyon, head to one of the park’s many beautiful viewpoints. Penedo Durão is the best viewpoint for birdwatching and Miradouro de Penha das Torres is a great place to see the sunrise. If you’re not sure where to start your adventure to the Douro International Natural Park, book a guided tour, such as this one with Ambieduc .

5. Visit the Douro Museum

Dive into the valley’s history at the Douro Museu or the Museu do Douro. Located in the small town of Régua, the museum is housed in a historic wine warehouse on the riverfront. Exhibits showcase the history of the wine-making industry in the Douro Valley, and its impact on the local community. In addition, you’ll learn about the geographical features of the valley and why these are so well suited for producing wine.

After exploring the museum, enjoy a glass of wine at the on-site wine bar. Visitors receive one complimentary glass of port or table wine with their ticket. For those based in Porto, the museum can be reached by train from the São Bento Station or through a boat tour from Porto.

6. Visit the small towns

When you’re not wine tasting or soaking up the views, explore the charming towns scattered throughout the valley. The town of Lamego boasts a beautiful historic chapel sitting atop a grand staircase. The chapel, called the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, was constructed between the 18th and 20th centuries. It features a variety of architectural styles, including Baroque, Romantic and Gothic. The outside of the chapel is decorated in stunning blue and white tiles, called azulejos. Lamego is also home to other historical sites and museums, located just down the hill from the chapel.

Travel Train

If you love azulejos, be sure to visit Pinhão train station, built in 1937. Pinhão is also centrally located, close to many of the most popular wineries, making it a convenient place to stop. There is also a historical train that stops in Pinhão. There is wine and often entertainment on the train.

The train departs from Peso da Régua, another popular town in the Douro Valley. Since many boat tours also depart here, there’s plenty to do for tourists. for example, walk along the Régua pier, check out the town’s churches and grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants.

Porto and the North of Portugal Shine in SI Swimsuit 2024

Make Porto and the North your next coastal vacation spot.

Martha Zaytoun | Apr 22, 2024

Ponte de Luís I in Porto

For the 60th anniversary of the SI Swimsuit Issue, the magazine team made sure to pick the best photo shoot destinations. Naturally, the coast of Portugal had to be among the list of set locations.

Porto and the North is one of the seven regions—and the birthplace—of the coastal European country. The populous region is both the site of prehistoric life and the first region founded by the early Portuguese royalty. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the area boasts an extensive coastline, lush green mountains and tranquil rivers.

The country, located on the Western coast of Europe, boasts spectacular coastal towns and idyllic beaches. In Porto and the North, brand regulars like Katie Austin , Christen Harper and Camille Kostek were joined by some new talent: 2024 rookies Brittney Nicole , Penny Lane , Sharina Gutierrez , Nina Cash and Olivia Dunne .

The SI Swimsuit team in Portugal

It was a trip worth taking, according to SI Swimsuit editorial assistant Elizabeth Wentworth. “Shooting in Portugal was very special because we got to experience both the city of Porto and the vineyards in the Douro Valley,” she says of the experience. “Porto is very rich in history, making it an incredible place to wander the cobblestone streets. And the Douro Valley looked like something out of a postcard with rolling hills and vineyards as far as you could see.”

Gutierrez couldn’t agree more. Arriving to the location was a moment that she will “never forget,” she says. “It was such a magical moment. Every time I close my eyes and think of it, I can hear the sound of peacocks running across the cobblestone road. [I can] smell the scent of the delicious grapes that made the incredible verde wine. I can feel the moss and vines that took over the building walls.”

Admittedly, Portugal is an impressive country, which boasts much to do and see. Whether you’re traveling for work (like us) or pleasure, it’s sure to be a success—especially if you take our recommendations to heart.

Our 2024 photo shoot travels gave us a good feel for Porto and the North. If you’re considering vacationing along the northern coast of Portugal, be sure to check out our tips before you go.

How to get to Porto and the North

If you’re traveling from the United States, you can reach Porto International Airport—which is about 10 miles from Porto’s city center—by way of a direct flight from Newark Liberty International Airport. Or, if you’re already in Europe, the airport can be reached easily from various European capitals. In that case, though, travelers can also reach the region by way of car or train.

The city and region also host a number of cruise ships throughout the year, if you’re looking for a way to see much of coastal Europe in one go.

What to do in Porto and the North

With miles of coastline, the beaches are perhaps the most sought-after destination on a trip to the region. The mild and temperate weather—with temperatures that don’t tend to exceed 86° F—makes for comfortable days by the Atlantic. But it’s also the perfect weather for exploring the city of Porto (and other smaller towns) and the beautiful Douro Valley.

Grape harvest

There is so much to see and do in the region (let alone in the country itself), but some of the highlights—beyond trips to the coast—include:

  • The FC Porto Museum
  • A wine-tasting in a Porto wine cellar
  • Douro River cruise
  • Grape harvest tours in Porto and the North
  • Rafting in Arouca Geopark

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Please remember that of all these tours are private and can be adjusted to your taste. You can add, replace or skip some sights; you can add more days to the package or cut the tour short. Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
