How to Get to Rani Jhari Viewpoint?

Access to Rani Jhari Viewpoint is exclusively possible via a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Regular 2-wheel drive cars are unsuitable for navigating challenging road conditions, resembling an off-road experience due to their poor state. To facilitate a smooth journey, renting a jeep from your accommodation is advisable, and many jeep owners affiliated with homestays offer transportation to and from the viewpoint.

About Ballalarayana Durga Fort

Ballalarayana Durga Fort stands as a deserted ancient hill fort commissioned by the spouse of Veera Ballala I, the monarch of the Hoysala Empire. The precise construction date remains unclear, with conflicting information suggesting the 12th century, according to some sources and the 15th century, according to local accounts.

Presently, the sole surviving feature of the fort is a surrounding wall or compound, with minimal remnants of its former fortification. Visiting the fort reveals modest remains, and the prominent feature at the hill’s summit is an orange flag, marking the pinnacle of the hill.

About Bandaje Arbi Falls

Elevated at 200 feet, Bandaje Arbi Falls, also known as Bandaje Falls, is situated in the Charmadi region of Belthangady taluk in Karnataka. Accessible exclusively through hiking, the Falls’ summit offers stunning views of the Ghats and valleys.

Trekking Agency

I opt for treks with the Bangalore Mountaineering Club (BMC) due to the enjoyable crowd and well-organized treks they offer. The affordability and efficient management make the experience worthwhile. BMC’s unique initiatives, such as seed bombing , contribute to their environmentally friendly approach. Having participated in BMC-organized treks to destinations like Vattakanal , Kumara Parvatha , and several others, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed each experience.

Weekend Itinerary for Bandaje Arbi Falls Trek via Ballalarayana Durga Fort

Note: BMC orchestrated and managed this weekend itinerary from Bangalore.

  • Friday Evening – Our journey commenced at approximately 9:30 PM from Bangalore on a Friday evening. The entire night was spent travelling by bus. Covering a distance of around 290 kilometres, the route from Bangalore to Durgadahalli homestay typically takes about 6 to 7 hours.
  • Saturday Morning : We were transported to the Rani Jhari viewpoint after breakfast. Embarking from there, our trek spanned the entire day, culminating in our return. Once back, the homestay owner kindly provided transportation back to the homestay.
  • Sunday Morning : Our initial destination was Kodige Falls. After an hour of exploration, we returned to the homestay for breakfast. Departing at approximately 10 AM, we stopped at Belur Temple on our way back. We reached Bangalore at around 8 PM.

Accommodation at Durgadahalli Homestay

We lodged at Durgadahalli Homestay during our weekend getaway, nestled amid nature. The delightful sounds of peacocks serenaded mornings. Despite the simplicity of the dorms, the overall experience was pleasant.

The amicable owner, Sanjay, and his welcoming family, along with their friendly dog, Rocky, made the stay truly enjoyable. The delectable and flavorful meals served added to the charm of the homestay. For bookings, contact Sanjay via WhatsApp at +91 94497 01866 or at +91 77957 54335.

Other Things to See on Bandaje Arbi Falls Trek via Ballalarayana Durga Fort

Neelakunji flowers.

Neelakurinji, a shrub native to the forests of the Western Ghats in the southern part of India, derives its name from the Kunthi River within the Silent Valley National Park in Kerala.

Typically found in Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, these flowers are renowned for their unique blooming pattern, occurring once every 12 years. Our fortunate encounter with these gorgeous flowers occurred while trekking to the Bandaje Arbi Falls.

Kodige Falls

Kodige Falls, a privately owned waterfall, offers an excellent spot for a refreshing dip and water fun. The water, though not shallow, has slippery rocks. Visitors are required to pay an entrance fee of INR 30 per person. Access to the waterfall is exclusively possible via a 4-wheel drive.

Our homestay owner, Sanjay, recommended this waterfall, and he graciously transported us to and from the falls in his jeep. The round-trip jeep ride for the entire group amounted to INR 800.

Is Bandaje Arbi Falls Trek via Ballalarayana Durga Fort Safe for Solo Female Trekkers?

For solo female trekkers, I recommend opting for a reputable trekking agency. Joining an agency ensures a hassle-free experience as they handle all arrangements, including booking homestays, organizing transportation, and providing meals. While I didn’t perceive the location as particularly dangerous, its isolation within the forested surroundings could pose potential risks, making the guidance and support of a trekking agency valuable for safety and security.

Download the Emergency Plus app for any unforeseen situations. The app does not require a mobile network; it shows your location. This is useful to inform the emergency services in case of any emergency. If you are a tourist, always have good comprehensive travel insurance to cover yourself in case of any emergency.

Closing Notes

The Bandaje Arbi Falls trek stands out as one of the most scenic treks I’ve experienced in the Western Ghats. The journey unfolded amidst breathtaking views adorned with vibrant greens and blues palettes. To all fellow trekking enthusiasts, I wholeheartedly recommend embarking on the Bandaje Arbi Falls trek for an unforgettable adventure amid nature’s splendour.

The hike is known as Bandaje Arbi (waterfall in the location language) Falls.

Ballalarayana Durga fort is the first part of this trek; on your way to Bandaje Falls. This fort is not only known for its breathtaking view and

greenery charms, but it’s also an ideal spot for amazing sunsets. Earlier, people used only to cover the fort & return as not many were aware of the waterfall.

This trek cannot be done in a single day from Bangalore, as reaching the base village will take 7-8 hours. Hence, we advise doing the trek over the weekend.

bandaje trek bmc

The Bandaje falls trek is moderately challenging. The trek distance is 6-6.5 kms from the  start point , and it takes around 7-8 hours to reach Bandaje falls & return to the start point.

It would be best if you tried to start the trek in the early hours to witness the sunrise from the Ballalarayana Durga fort. The views from this point are majestic, especially during the monsoon months. One can divide the trek into two sections.

Start Point to Ballalarayana Durga Fort:

The trek distance from the start point to the fort is around 3KM and will take around 1.5 hours to reach. This section of the trek is through the dense forest and is a bit tiring compared to the 2nd section, as you gradually climb up till you reach the fort.

Great Mountains at Ballarayana Durga Fort

What is the best time to visit Bandaje Falls Trek

For the most vibrant, lush green scenery and powerful waterfalls, plan your trek during monsoons. Unlike Kumara Parvatha, which is risky during monsoons, Ballalarayana Durga is a monsoon delight.

If you prefer crystal clear views of the surrounding Ghats and Kudremukh National Park, opt for post-monsoon and winter seasons when the skies are clear and haze-free.

How to reach the starting point of the trek?

To explore Ballalarayana Durga – Bandaje Falls trek, you can choose between driving your own vehicle or taking public transport for an added adventure.

Driving is ideal, as the trek starts from a remote location , offering leisure and rest before and after your journey. The trip from Bangalore to the base at Sunkasale/Durgadahalli passes through beautiful roads in Karnataka, with lush greenery surrounding you. Durgadahalli is 6.5 km from Sunkasale, and the Kalabhyraveshwara temple serves as the trek’s base. Behind the temple, find a secluded mound where you can camp.

If you opt for public transport, be prepared for a longer journey and more walking. Buses from Bangalore to Horanadu or Mudigere are available, but you will need to switch buses multiple times.

Once you arrive in Mudigere, take a bus to Sunkasale and stock up on drinking water. From there, look for a jeep or minibus to Durgadahalli, or walk 6.5 km to the campsite. Regardless of your chosen mode of transportation, make sure to reach the base by 4 pm, pitch your tents, and enjoy a quick hike to Rani Bagilu for stunning views of Kudremukh National Park before turning in for the night.

Availability of accommodations and food near the trek

There are no proper restaurants at the base and only a few small eateries in Sunkasale. It’s a good idea to pack non-perishable food from Bangalore, such as bread with jam or peanut butter, or rotis. Make sure to bring enough for dinner on Day 1 and breakfast and lunch on Day 2.

For water, fill your bottles at Sunkasale before starting the trek, as the water tank near the temple isn’t suitable for drinking. The next available water source is Bandaje Falls, 6 km into the trek.

Accommodation:

When it comes to accommodations, you’ll find plenty of homestays and resorts in Charmadi. Many travelers choose to drive from Bangalore and camp at Sunkasale, but you can also book a homestay according to your preferences.

  • Check Homestays in Charmadi
  • Check Hotels in Bangalore

The Difficulty level of the Bandaje Falls Trek

The Ballalarayana Durga – Bandaje Falls trek is an adventure that’s manageable for most trekkers, but it’s essential to be prepared for a few challenging sections. During the monsoon months, the trail can be slippery due to mud and loose gravel, so choose your footwear wisely and stay updated on weather forecasts.

Keep an eye out for steeper sections in the grasslands after Ballalarayana Durga Fort, where loose stones and gravel can make navigation tricky. Trekking poles can help with stability and grip in these areas.

At the snout of the waterfall, exercise extreme caution, especially during monsoons when the rocks can be slippery. To safely enjoy the view, lie down with only your head exposed so your body weight keeps you secure, or ask a friend to hold your hand and provide support while you take a peek.

Is Camping Allowed On Ballalarayana Druga – Bandaje Falls Trek ?

Remember, you can only pitch tents in the clearing behind Kalabhyraveshwara temple. If you’ve driven, leave your tents in your vehicle before setting off. For those who arrived by bus, kindly ask a local in Durgadahalli or Sunkasale to look after your tents while you’re on the trek. Carrying tents on the trail is not permitted.

Ballalarayanadurga Trek & Bandaje Waterfalls – Weekend Getaway From Bangalore

  • Group Size: 8 - 12

bandaje trek bmc

Hello Trekkers!

Hidden among a blanket of greenery on top of the hills, Bandaje Arbi Waterfalls is a campers paradise in western ghats. The only way to reach the falls is through trekking. It plunges 200 feet from the hilltop and is a surreal sight to behold. The best part about the waterfalls is that the spot is absolutely clean and untouched, largely because of the strenuous trek uphill.

On Day 1 we set on an 8 Km trek to  Bandaje waterfalls  from our base camp. The trek initially passes through a village, a couple of forest streams, after which it becomes steep before entering a dense evergreen forest. The forest is so thick that sun rays will hardly reach the ground. After taking a well-deserved dip in the chilling waterfalls, we indulge in raw nature camping overnight. We will sleep in the tranquility of mother nature and wake up to the unbelievable sunrise glistening through the mist.

We will then continue the trek towards Ballarayanadurga Fort, which is around 5 km distance from the falls. The trek trails are very confusing, one reason why we would opt for the forest guide. Once we ascend the initial forest path, the wide-open Shola grasslands that offer breathtaking views all round will welcome us.

Halfway through the trail that takes us on one of the most beautiful terrains in the western ghats, there is a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains, that suggests we reached the peak of the mountain. From here, we descend towards the Ballarayanadurga fort which is on an adjacent mountain.

We will explore the remains of a fort that was built during the Hoysala dynasty. It stands as proof of magnificent past and architectural excellence. After this, we shall hike down another 3 Km to the civilization where our vehicle would be waiting to pick us.

One would seldom find a place as peaceful and isolated as Bandaje Arbi Waterfalls and Ballarayanadurga fort. If you seek solitude from raw nature, just book it.

Seasonal Variations

  • June to Sept (monsoon): Monsoons bring the best out of Ballarayanadurga. It rains persistently, filling up the streams and creating mini-waterfalls everywhere. This means we may have to take a dip in the adjacent streams instead of going right under the falls at Bandaje Arbi. But the experience in monsoons is simply amazing.
  • Oct to Jan (winter): Clouds will make way to clear blue skies. Nights will be colder. Plenty of water in the falls to take a shower. Amazing sunsets and sunrises at Bandaje & Ballarayanadurga will continue throughout the winter. Surely the best time to experience the bliss of nature.
  • Feb to May (summer): Mountains get drier and more brownish. It will be hot and humid that can sap off our energy. We usually avoid doing Ballarayanadurga in summer.

But in some cases, we may have to skip a place altogether.

  • Information

One of the most spectacular waterfalls in Karnataka that is about 200 feet high plunge nestled in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada district is a must to visit attraction in the state. Nestled in the lap of dense forests and grasslands, the waterfalls can be reached only by trekking and is worth it. Immerse in the beauty of lush green dense forests, mesmerising Ghats, breath-taking sunsets, melodies of the chirping birds and the fragrance of wild flora only at the trek route towards the Bandaje falls.

Take a road and trek the trail that is less travelled and chase those gushing Bandaje waterfalls.

A paradise for the nature lover, a photographer’s delight and a dream trek for a trekker, Bandaje falls and the Ballarayanadurga Trek is sure to be visited again and again. The serene and panoramic landscapes will ensure that everyone who visits will have a ball of a time. A drive to Bandaje falls crossing the Charmadi Ghats of the Western Ghats, is a must-to-do while in Karnataka and en route to Chikkamagalur . To visit the falls and trek in Ballalarayana one needs to take forest permission from the Belthangady wildlife range office in Kudremukh National Park . The trek and the falls are a visual treat to the eyes. Due to dense forest and permission issues, there are no permanent accommodations available. However, you can have the option of camping. Ensure you travel with a reliable tour organiser and a guide. Soak up in the beauty of the starry night with a cool breeze staying in a camp amidst dense forest.

The best part of Bandaje falls is that the route to reach is less- travelled as the trek trail is a strenuous one. Trekking is the only way to reach the falls and if one is dedicated and determined, loves nature and is comparatively fit can reach the final destination. Yes, to reach the falls one must ensure physical fitness as the trek requires a lot of energy. The waterfalls continue to flow as a single stream and join the river Netravathi as a tributary and are worth all the efforts for that surreal sight. The mesmerising sight intensifies during the sunset. The various hues of the sky when merging with the roaring shining waterfalls in the backdrop of lush greenery, the whole setting is beyond imagination. The unexplored and untouched beauty should surely be on the bucket list of every adventure seeker and nature lover.

Best time to visit

Needless to mention, the best time to visit the falls and trek the Ballalarayana is post-monsoon. Enjoy the captivating gushing waterfalls and lush greenery all around. The trek can be challenging during monsoon as it gets slushy and you may not like to get encountered by leeches. Winters are pleasant. Avoid summers as the forest is dry and hot and there is hardly any water in the falls. Hence the best time to visit is from September to February.

How to reach Bandaje Falls?

To reach Bandaje falls one has to trek Ballalarayana Durga Fort Trek. A moderate trek of 6-7 km takes about 7-8 hours for a return visit. Hiking up from the dense trails to the viewpoint it takes about 2 hours to reach Ballalarayana Durga Fort. After the fort hikes up to the distance of 3.5 km for 2.5 hours to reach the Bandaje falls. This second part of the trek is relatively easy. Please ensure you trek with an authorised guide only. There is a very likely chance of getting lost in the forest.
