Editor’s Note: We know that many of you are looking for help writing travel experience essays for school or simply writing about a trip for your friends or family. To inspire you and help you write your next trip essay—whether it’s an essay about a trip with family or simply a way to remember your best trip ever (so far)—we enlisted the help of Professor Kathleen Boardman, whose decades of teaching have helped many college students learn the fine art of autobiography and life writing. Here’s advice on how to turn a simple “my best trip” essay into a story that will inspire others to explore the world.

Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

You Can Do It: Turning Your Trip into a Great Travel Experience Essay

I hope you will take yourself seriously as a traveler and as a writer. Through what—and how—you write about just a small portion of your travel experience, show me that you are an interesting, thoughtful, observant person. I will come back to you, begging for more of your travel essays.

How To Write a Good Travel Essay

Few things can be more enjoyable than telling a fascinating story about your holidays. You can post it on your social media, create a travel blog, or write an essay for school. Sharing memories of the pleasant trip is for sure much more interesting and exciting than writing an academic essay on some obscure topic. Besides obvious fun, however, this kind of writing could bring the same challenges as any other topic and even a few more.

notebook

Traditional struggles with essay writing include crafting a clear outline, selecting your key ideas and related arguments, and drafting a concise text. Travel essays may additionally raise the issue of wanting to tell too much. It is also easy to overwhelm your readers with lots of new facts and information about another country or activity. So, let’s discuss some tips and tricks on how to write your travel essay smoothly and with the best result.

Start With a Map

planning a trip

Your wonderful journey was born after looking through the bucket lists of the most remarkable destinations and choosing several highlights of your trip. Most probably, you’ve planned an itinerary connecting your dream destinations trying for it to be the shortest or the most picturesque. Same is valid for planning your travel essay – always start with an outline.

Clear draft of the points you’d like to describe and details to better illustrate your story could keep you in check while writing your essay. It’ll be easier to follow one narrative line without wandering off. The best about the outlines is that anyone can write an essay with an elaborated outline. And if you struggle with finding time or inspiration to complete your essay, you can always apply for help to professionals. As the best essay writing service reviews show, experienced writers deliver great essays based on the clients’ outlines.

Focus on Your Goal

Even travel essays can differ in type and end goals. You can describe your journey from start to finish concentrating on the attractions seen. Or you can talk about funny incident that happened to you. One can always dare to beat Jack Kerouac and write a road story. It is even possible to go travel-blog style and write about lifehacks for those planning a journey.

Whatever you choose as your aim for an essay would decide the text structure, language, and whole approach to writing. It is advisable to keep this in mind and avoid mixing several goals in one paper. The essay format requires being brief and sticking to one line of narrative. It wouldn’t work to start philosophical dwellings on the symbolism of the road and continue with lifehacks about packing light for a journey.

Paint a Picture

Unless you’re writing an essay for your personal travel blog, it’d be difficult to attach photos to illustrate your text. So, you should use your words instead. Try to add adjectives and phrases that bring your memories to life. If a good description makes you feel the taste and smell of your holidays, it’s probable your readers would feel that too.

Remember, though, to stay tasteful and brief. Too many personal details may spoil the effect your essay was supposed to make. And documenting every step of your journey may turn your account into a boring story. Keeping a balance here is a challenge, but if succeeded you’ll have a captivating essay for any kind of audience.

Tie Your Story to Bigger Issues

Of course, your vacations deserve detailed storytelling. But without clearly demonstrated relations between the lessons you’ve learned on your trip and more universal challenges and experiences, it might be quite boring for other people to read your essay. In the end, we all worry most about our own lives. So, to grasp the attention of your readers try to plan your captivating story around some relatable issue. For example, feeling of sadness away from home despite wonderful landscapes around you. Or practical challenges of finding a common language with locals in another country.

With such an approach in mind, you can add advice or travel recommendations to your essay based on your own experience and reflections. This would make your paper more useful, important to finish, and relatable.

Recounting your exciting travels is a pleasant task. Even with efforts to put into writing an essay, the subject itself warms sparks the inspiration. There is an obvious need to follow the traditional essay-writing rules. Start with a clear outline in mind, limit your account to several highlights of your journey, connect your experience to some relatable issue your reader would feel close to. Consider choosing some stronger emotional adjectives or phrases to convey your personal feelings about the journey. Think about your paper as of your travel journal and as a brief educational piece for someone who’s never traveled. This way your essay would be both colorful and concise for any reader to love.

My Dream Vacation

A dream vacation for me would be in Hawaii. The reason for this is that it has all the elements that I am looking for in a vacation destination. It has beautiful beaches, stunning scenery, great weather and friendly people.

I have always been fascinated by the beaches in Hawaii. The white sand and turquoise waters are simply mesmerizing. I would love to spend my days lounging on the beach, sipping cocktails and soaking up the sun. I would also like to try out some water sports such as surfing, snorkeling and scuba diving.

The scenery in Hawaii is simply breathtaking. The lush green mountains, active volcanoes and cascading waterfalls are a sight to behold. I would love to go on hikes and explore the jungle. I am also interested in visiting the Volcanoes National Park and the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden.

The weather in Hawaii is perfect for me. It is sunny and warm all year round with very little rainfall. This is the ideal climate for me as I don’t like cold weather. The people of Hawaii are known for their friendliness and hospitality. I am sure I will enjoy interacting with the locals and learning about their culture.

I am confident that a vacation in Hawaii will be the perfect dream vacation for me. It has everything that I am looking for in a destination and I am sure I will have an amazing time there.

Essay on My Dream Vacation to Countryside

A vacation to country side is essentially pleasing. The scenery of my country India are of soothing importance. My dream vacation would be to the countryside of India. I have heard much about it from my elders and also seen many movies which have been shot in the rural areas of India. The greenery and the serenity are what attract me the most about countryside. It is said that a person should always visit his or her roots at least once in a lifetime and I completely agree with this saying.

The best part about countryside is that it presents an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. It would be a great opportunity to disconnect from the internet and social media and just relax in nature’s lap. I am also very keen on visiting the ancient temples and monuments which are found in large numbers in the rural areas of India. I am sure that a vacation to countryside would be a truly memorable experience.

I want to visit cities like Rome, Paris, and Barcelona to see iconic landmarks like the Colosseum, Eiffel Tower, and Sagrada Familia. I also want to immerse myself in the local culture by trying new foods, learning some of the language, and meeting people from different backgrounds.

But my dream vacation isn’t just limited to popular tourist destinations. I also want to explore the off-beat paths and hidden gems in Europe. I want to wander through quaint villages, hike in scenic landscapes, and discover lesser-known but equally charming cities. This trip would allow me to step out of my comfort zone and challenge myself to try new things.

Apart from sightseeing and exploring, I also envision spending time relaxing on sandy beaches, sipping coffee at sidewalk cafes, and watching sunsets over picturesque landscapes. This dream vacation would be a perfect balance of adventure, culture, and leisure.

In addition to all the experiences and memories I would make, this trip would also give me a chance to learn about myself and gain a deeper understanding of the world we live in. It’s not just a vacation but an opportunity for personal growth and self-discovery.

Overall, my dream vacation to Europe would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I hope to turn into reality someday. It’s the perfect blend of my interests and desires, and I can’t wait to embark on this journey of a lifetime. So, what is your dream vacation? Share it with us in the comments below! Dreaming of Travel Essay — My Dream Vacation

Where would YOU go if you could have the vacation of your dreams?

For me, If I could choose the vacation of my dreams, I would definitely choose southern Europe. Although the USA is far from here, it is possible to reach to Europe by plane. Why do I want to travel to countries such as Italy, Spain, Portugal or Greece? The answer is simple; their climate is perfect and their ancient buildings and monuments teach about the birth of Western Civilization. I would love to go to the airport today and buy a ticket to start my journey in Greece.

Greece is the cradle of Western Civilization. Such philosophers as Aristotle, Plato and Socrates generated their wise ideas and ‘invented’ philosophy in Greece. Very soon, their thoughts spread in other European countries. I would like to visit Greece in order to understand the influence of the country’s nature, people and cuisine on our culture. Their influence has been positive because of so many talented personalities originating from this magnificent place. I would love to start my vacation in Athens. This ancient city, the capital of Greece, is full of marvelous monuments and prehistoric buildings that have survived until our time. I would like to walk about the old city and admire the historical places of interest.

It would be foolish to leave Greece without trying its cuisine. Greeks are famous for their love for dairy products, olives, fish and of course wine. They manage to combine these ingredients to produce splendid dishes.

The second stop of my journey would be Italy. But I am confused about which places to visit with so many great choices. The most obvious place is Rome, the capital of Italy. This ancient city is supposed to be one of the most beautiful in Europe. The Colosseum, Vatican City, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain would all be worth visiting. The entire city is practically a big monument and a complex of historic buildings that impress your mind. I would like to spend a few days wandering around and visiting its cozy restaurants and pizzerias.

I would try all possible kinds of pizza if I were in Italy because this dish is one of my favorites. It would be a crime to miss the chance to eat a genuine Italian pizza cooked in its motherland. Then, I should definitely try different sorts of the Italian wine. I would like to devote a day or two to the exploration of the small villas and private households that grow grapes and produce their wine.

If I am in Italy, I should go to Venice. This city is known all over the world due to its unique position and organization. When I was a child I dreamt to visit Venice, this magical city placed on the water. You will not see a car or scooter there because native citizens travel about Venice by boats. I want to look at the police, vendors and public transport that function on boats. In addition, Venice is rich in Gothic architecture. It is difficult to imagine something more imposing that looking at Rialto Bridge, Piazza San Marco and Doge’s Palace from your gondola. I suppose, I will feel like in a fairy tale when I decide to spend a week in the city on the water. I would try to visit this spectacular city during the carnival that gathers thousands of people in the streets wearing masks and weird costumes.

sagrada-familia

Next would be Spain. Barcelona is the primary city in my ‘must see’ list. The city is known for its architecture and lifestyle. I have dreamt about visiting the Sagrada Familia for years. I think this historic church will definitely impress me with its size and beauty. Then, I will look at the other Gaudi masterpieces that have made Barcelona famous. Barcelona Cathedral, The Arc de Triomf, The National Museum of Art of Catalonia and other places of interest are worth attention. The Barcelona beach is the ideal place to have a good rest. Its pure water and well known parties will make your vacation unforgettable. Although I am not a big fan of soccer, I would like to visit the museum of the strongest European team in Barcelona. Moreover, it would be nice to watch the game at the largest stadium in Europe called Camp Nou.

I suppose I would finish my vacation in Barcelona and fly home by plane from it's airport. I believe that these experiences and impressions obtained in the picturesque and warm southern European countries will stay with me for years. Obviously, I will try to turn this dream vacation into reality.

What would your dream vacation look like?

How God’s ‘No’ to My Dream School Was a ‘Yes’ to the Local Church

This article is the Second-Place Winner in TGC’s 2024 Essay Contest for Young Adults .

the dream trip essay

Each student welcomed me to the school in his or her native language. I’d never gotten overexcited about college acceptances, but this university was made for me. It boasted superior academics, a majority-international student body, and immersion in a new country every semester. With my burgeoning desire for international missions and knack for languages, it was a no-brainer.

My parents, I knew, would be hesitant. They kept saying I needed to be part of a church in college, and I responded that I’d be part of seven churches around the world. Nevertheless, I prayed for wisdom, just as I prayed that God would change their hearts.

The more counsel I sought, though, the more advice I got to prioritize Christian community. My discipler explained that Christians are united in such a way that the spiritual health of one affects the spiritual health of the rest (Eph. 4:15–16). My pastor said, “It’s better to have one Christian friend than to go to the best university in the world.” My small group was studying the Psalms, and I meditated on the fact that God wrote out all my days (Ps. 139:16). It seemed ridiculous to try to compete with that for control over my life. My parents weren’t budging, and as options dwindled, I realized with frustration that the response to my prayer was clear.

The more counsel I sought, the more advice I got to prioritize Christian community.

After getting accepted to a university in Washington, DC, with a strong church nearby, it was settled. Emotionlessly, almost mechanically, I declined the admission offer from my dream school.

By my peers’ standards, my choice was disappointing. Whenever I described the forward-thinking, globe-trotting experiences afforded by my dream university, I watched my friends’ faces fall from amazement to confusion when I said I turned it down to be part of a church in college. On Instagram, I was bombarded with calls to romanticize my life and travel the world, and I fended off feelings of regret when I saw pictures of my would-be classmates exploring Seoul together.

But by the time I started school, I still had no question that God wanted me there. My certainty, though blind, was certainty nonetheless.

God’s ‘Yes’

One Friday night, after I’d been attending Capitol Hill Baptist Church for a few weeks, I left campus to finish the church’s membership classes. In a small room, the other students and I sat as the pastor explain the church’s covenant. I listened apprehensively for the responsibilities we’d have to commit to, expecting a task list. Instead, I heard lines like these: “We will exercise an affectionate care and watchfulness over each other”; “We will not neglect to pray for ourselves and others”; “We will rejoice at each other’s happiness and bear each other’s burdens and sorrows.”

“This means,” the pastor explained, “that each of you is welcome into my life. Any of you can simply ask to come over for dinner, and we’ll gladly fold you in.”

I was dumbstruck. I’d never seen such unabashed hospitality. Far from a list of rules and responsibilities, this covenant was like a marriage covenant—a commitment to love and to serve above all else. I’d sensed there was something different about this church, and I realized it was driven by nothing more or less than the gospel itself.

Weeks went by, and my excitement only grew. When those back home asked how my freshman year was going, classes were among the last things I discussed. I jumped into stories about the sermon series on Ephesians, the church couple’s house I crashed every Saturday night, and the booming congregational singing. And I wasn’t faking it. I didn’t embellish details just because I wanted to give my parents a nice progress report.

The church was where I was spending the majority of my free time and experiencing exponential personal and spiritual growth.

A few months in, it became clear my dream school would’ve been a spiritual nightmare. I would’ve had to look for a new church every semester in a language I didn’t know. Previously, I was unaware of the gravity of God’s command to not forsake assembling together (Heb. 10:25) and of how our regular attendance contributes not only to our spiritual health but to the health of Christ’s body as a whole (Eph. 4:11–16).

I became painfully aware of the dangers of a slow erosion of the conscience and how it leads many to make a “shipwreck of their faith” (1 Tim. 1:19). I marveled at the thought that God might have protected me from learning this lesson the hard way.

It became clear my dream school would’ve been a spiritual nightmare.

One Sunday morning, I sang “How Sweet and Aweful Is the Place” with our congregation as I waited to walk up to the baptismal: “Lord, why was I a guest? / Why was I made to hear Thy voice, and enter while there’s room . . . ?”

My voice stopped. The rest of the verse was lost to the wave of emotion that overtook me. How was it that God, who had so often used my foolish desires to teach me about himself, allowed me to avoid the consequences of what could’ve been my biggest folly yet? Why was he so kind as to turn the tide of my heart that week and bring me to the most spiritually flourishing season of my life? Remembering my stubbornness, I wanted to recoil at the disproportionate love God had lavished on me in spite of myself.

Better Pursuit

My adamancy that I’d be best prepared for missions by traveling seems comical now. My years at Capitol Hill Baptist taught me that consistent membership in a faithful, gospel-preaching church is the best preparation anyone can have—not just for missions but for all parts of the Christian life. I’m better equipped now to open my home to those in need, study Scripture analytically, and invite others to help me fight sin.

Although my life today is a far cry from the radical overseas experience I envisioned after college, it’s marked by joyful, committed membership to a faithful body of believers. It’s where God has me right now, and after a taste of his plans compared to mine, I don’t want anything else.

Road Trip Safety Tips

Road trip essentials, planning for a road trip on a budget, plan your next road trip with aaa.

Picture this: the open road in front of you, your favorite song playing on the radio as you drive toward a dream destination. You’ve decided to embark on one of the ultimate travel opportunities — a cross-country road trip.

While this is a bucket list adventure for many people, it can also be daunting until you understand how to plan a cross-country road trip that appeals to your preferences and budget.

No matter what direction or top travel destination you’re headed towards, AAA is here to help with our best-in-class recommendations. From the planning phase to safety, essentials and budgets, read on for our tips to help you plan your perfect cross-country road trip.

8 Steps To Plan Your Dream Road Trip

Follow these steps to learn how to plan a cross-country road trip you’re guaranteed to love.

1. Define Your Destination and Route

Whether traveling east to west, taking a west-to-east-coast road trip or exploring any direction in between, it’s important to determine your final stop and how you'll get there. Setting a start and end point for your trip allows you to estimate how long your journey will be so you can budget your time accordingly.

Knowing your destination also means you can map out potential routes and the stops you want to make along the way. For example, if you’re starting your cross-country road trip in Boston, do you want to drive south to make stops in Washington D.C., Nashville, Dallas and Phoenix? West to make stops in Chicago, Kansas City, Denver and Las Vegas? Or take a mixed route with a combination of stops?

While researching potential directions and stops on your road trip, take the following considerations into account:

  • How much time do you have for your road trip?
  • Will a specific route make your trip longer?
  • Are there specific places you’ve been wanting to visit?
  • What attractions would you like to see on your cross-country road trip?
  • How far would you like to travel per day?
  • Are there any popular road trips you’d like to add to your itinerary, such as national parks, route 66 or scenic highways?

the dream trip essay

2. Set a Budget

Knowing how to plan a cross-country road trip on a budget will allow you to stop and see as much as possible without overspending. Treat your cross-country road trip like other vacations you’ve taken, meaning you should set a budget and research the cost of essentials and activities where you plan to stop.

Remember that different regions of the U.S. have different costs for various necessities. For example, the cost of regular gasoline per gallon in California will typically be closer to $5, but in Tennessee, it’ll be around $3.

Along the route you’ve chosen, check the cost of the following to determine a realistic budget for your road trip:

  • The average cost of gasoline per gallon in the states you’re driving through
  • Accommodation costs of where you plan to stop, whether at campsites or hotels
  • Cost of tolls along your route
  • The associated cost of different options for food, including buying groceries, fast food, casual dining and upscale dining
  • Fees for any activities and sightseeing you plan along your route

In addition to the above costs, also consider money for souvenirs, pet supplies (if you’re bringing them along) and any potential emergencies.

3. Choose Your Travel Companions

In the planning stage of your cross-country road trip, you must consider who you’re bringing with you. Remember, with multiple stops, you’ll be spending a lot of time with your travel companion(s), so compatibility is extremely important!

Travel compatibility includes ensuring everyone is on board with all plans, especially driving rotations. Map out a schedule to set expectations early on and assign roles to everyone (i.e., driver, direction giver, snack distributor, etc.).

If you’re planning on bringing a pet companion with you on your cross-country road trip, remember to consider their needs when making plans. This includes making more stops for bathroom breaks, booking pet-friendly accommodations, bringing travel water and food bowls and more.

4. Plan Your Itinerary

With your route mapped out and stops decided on, it’s time to create an itinerary for your cross-country road trip, where you’ll decide how long you’ll stay in each location and what you’ll do while there. You can utilize a cross-country road trip planner or take a DIY approach.

Some tips to keep in mind while creating your cross-country road trip itinerary include:

  • Researching points of interest along your route
  • Noting the attractions on your must-see list
  • For example, visit our guide to fall road trips for scenic views of foliage across the country.
  • Accommodating your interests by spending more time in locations with more on your to-do and to-see lists

As you develop your itinerary, remember to be flexible and leave time for spontaneity — especially if you’re planning a relaxing road trip . Sometimes, the unexpected happens, upending your plans, or you can stumble across hidden gems by simply exploring on your own with no agenda.

5. Book Your Accommodations

Once your itinerary is established and you know how long you’ll be at each stop, the next step in planning a cross-country road trip is booking accommodations. This is especially true if you’re traveling during a peak season, like the summer months, or a popular travel time, like the holidays, when places to stay are busier and there are fewer options available.

Where you choose to stay while on your journey will vary depending on your preferences and mode of transportation. For example, if you’re taking a cross-country camping trip in an RV, you’ll book RV campgrounds.

However, when most people think of a road trip, they picture driving a car. This gives you more options for accommodations including campsites, motels, hotels and vacation rentals. Remember, take your trip budget into account as you search for places to stay and try to book accommodations with flexible cancellation policies in case your plans need to be adjusted along the way.

As a AAA member, you can book AAA Preferred Hotels with accommodation deals to help you stay within budget.

6. Pack Smartly

Going on any trip means packing strategically, and this is especially true for a road trip. Since you’ll be traveling cross-country, you need to prepare for various climates, temperatures and weather conditions. Remember, 70 degrees Fahrenheit is different in the humidity of the southeast versus the arid southwest.

As you begin putting packing tips to use for your road trip, look at the average temperature and conditions along your route and then consider your planned activities to determine your necessities. Some must-haves include a variety of clothing to be able to layer as needed, weather essentials such as a raincoat and a reliable pair of walking shoes.

Keep in mind that you’ll likely purchase souvenirs along your way, so you shouldn’t pack your car to the brim. Ensuring you have the essentials will allow you room to add on as you venture forward. Continue reading for our list of road trip essentials, including clothing!

7. Get Your Vehicle Ready to Hit the Road

If you're using your personal vehicle for your cross-country road trip, it’s essential to make sure it's good to go for the journey ahead. Follow a car maintenance checklist and schedule a pre-trip inspection to ensure everything is operating properly and to minimize any car issues you may encounter on your trip.

A short list of what you should check includes:

  • Fluid levels
  • Warning lights

To further ensure your safety on your cross-country road trip, prepare a car emergency kit with essentials. If you already have a kit in your car, double-check to make sure it's properly stocked before departing.

the dream trip essay

8. Plan for Entertainment

You’re going to have a lot of downtime while on your cross-country road trip, especially if you’re traveling with companions who will share in driving duties. While on long stretches of various highways, you will want some form of entertainment. This can include reading a book or playing an audiobook, listening to a podcast, listening to music, playing games on your devices or even playing a classic travel car game, like I Spy.

A great way to prepare music in advance is to curate a road trip playlist with all of your favorites in a range of genres — make sure your companions add their selections, too. Don’t forget to pack any chargers you’ll need for your devices to keep you endlessly entertained!

When venturing on a trip, you must always make safety your top priority.

Here are some road trip safety tips to keep top of mind:

  • Avoid distractions: No matter if you’re going down the street or cross-country, it’s imperative that you aren’t looking at your phone while driving. Keep any noise in your car to a minimum to further limit distractions.
  • Be mindful of the weather: Know what weather patterns you’ll likely encounter on your trip. Whether you’re driving in winter weather in the northeast, encountering monsoon season in the southwest or wildfires in California, preparing for what’s ahead will make you safer.
  • Share your itinerary and location: Whether you’re traveling alone or with companions, you should always share your itinerary and current location with someone at home. In an emergency, your contact person will be able to inform the proper authorities of where you are and your plans.
  • Keep your phone charged: You need to be able to stay in touch with your emergency contact back home and reach authorities in an emergency. Keeping your phone charged to a reasonable level will help you do so.
  • Follow traffic laws: As you drive, follow the general rules of the road, but also make sure to research the general traffic laws in the states you’ll be traveling through. For example, all states have a move-over law for emergency vehicles, but some extend the law to disabled vehicles on the side of the road.
  • Stay alert: Road safety means being alert whenever you’re behind the wheel and knowing your limitations. Schedule regular breaks every couple of hours to get some fresh air and stretch your legs. If you’re too tired to continue driving, see if your companion can take over or add a stop to your journey.
  • Be prepared: Research your route and the traffic patterns you can expect. When packing, make sure you have versatile and comfortable clothing options nearby that you can quickly change into on the road when needed.

Want to plan a cross-country road trip but need a more strict budget? Follow these tips to save money and maximize AAA membership discounts on your adventure:

Save Money on Food

Food expenses can quickly add up while traveling. To stick to a food budget, utilize the following tips:

  • Pack snacks for the car instead of stopping along the way.
  • Grocery shop as you go to restock on essentials like water, snacks and fruit.
  • Cook meals as often as possible, especially if your accommodations have a kitchenette or grill.
  • Eat where you can gain or use rewards. AAA members can get 10 percent off their applicable checks at Hard Rock Cafe and Landry’s Restaurants locations.

Save Money on Accommodations

Cross-country road trips mean a lot of time on the road but also the need for several stops and accommodations along the way. When needing to get some rest while on a budget, consider the following tips:

  • Bring camping gear to spend the night at a trusted campsite instead of splurging on a hotel.
  • Rent a camper van or RV for your road trip. Find well-lit places to park and sleep before getting back on route.
  • Book rooms at budget hotels for a less expensive lodging option while still having a room and bed to sleep in.
  • Stay at AAA Preferred Hotels to get a discount and earn hotel-specific rewards for your stay.

Save Money on Transportation

A vehicle is absolutely necessary for your journey, but saving money on your road trip across America is still possible. Follow these tips to budget your transportation costs:

  • Travel with companions to split any costs instead of driving separately.
  • Plan the most fuel-efficient and direct route to your destination. Use GPS to avoid rerouting and to avoid longer detours.
  • Rent a car to avoid costly wear and tear on your vehicle. Your AAA membership can get you discounts on car rentals through Hertz , Thrifty and Dollar Car Rentals with your AAA membership.
  • Enroll in the Fuel Rewards Program ® at Shell , available with your AAA membership, to save every time you fill up your gas tank and earn rewards.

Save Money on Activities

One of the main reasons most people choose to embark on a cross-country road trip is to experience different attractions throughout the U.S. — however, the cost of these activities can quickly add up. Follow these tips to save money on attractions during your trip:

  • Explore national parks for a variety of recreational activities.
  • Visit state parks for localized recreation.
  • Visit museums and check for free or reduced rate days (often weekdays).
  • Visit historical sites to learn more about U.S. and local history, and check for reduced rate days (often weekdays).
  • Explore the outdoors via hiking trails.
  • Check local events pages for free concerts, festivals and markets happening during your visit.

Have questions about how to plan a cross-country road trip? See the answers to some frequently asked questions below.

How Long Does It Take To Plan a Cross-Country Road Trip?

How long it takes to plan a cross-country road trip depends on the length of your trip and the level of detail going into your plans. Basic plans with a smaller itinerary will take only a few weeks to plan, while a more detailed and scheduled itinerary will take several months to plan.

When Is the Best Time of Year To Take a Cross-Country Road Trip?

Spring and fall are the most popular times of year for a cross-country road trip due to the fair weather. However, the best time of year to take a cross-country road trip will depend on your personal preferences and comfortability driving in different weather conditions. When deciding what time of year to take your road trip consider what the weather will be like, crowd sizes, road construction and any seasonal activities you want to partake in.

Remember, winter months come with shorter days and less light, potentially limiting the time you have to see certain sights.

How Much Does a Cross-Country Road Trip Cost?

The total cost of a cross-country road trip depends on a variety of factors, including destination, route, accommodations, transportation needs, activities, personal spending and splitting costs with companions. To track your spending and know the total cost of your trip, create and stick to a budget.

When choosing a route for your cross-country road trip, consider the following questions:

  • What are you interested in seeing?
  • Are there any locations you’ve always wanted to visit?
  • How long do you have for your trip?

Once you’ve answered these questions, research some popular routes and use online maps to develop yours.

Should I Plan Every Stop or Be Spontaneous?

A balance between planning and spontaneity is ideal. You should plan the main stops but leave room to make additional stops as needed or desired. If you want to do specific activities in specific areas, try to book those in advance to guarantee admission.

How Many Miles Should I Drive Each Day?

Ideally, aim for six to eight hours of driving per day to avoid fatigue behind the wheel. The actual amount of drive time per day will vary depending on road conditions, weather and your personal preference.

What Are Must-See Stops on a Cross-Country Road Trip?

Must-see stops on a cross-country road trip will depend on your interests and where you’re going. Generally, popular attractions include national parks like the Everglades or Badlands and iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building or Fisherman’s Wharf . The woman who was mauled by a tiger at Dreamworld had worked with the animals for more than a decade and had previously appeared on TV promoting the park.

Veteran handler Melissa Reynolds was attacked just an hour before the park opened to visitors on Monday morning.

Ms Reynolds, who has worked at Dreamworld for over 12 years, was walking an 180kg tiger alongside another trainer when the animal unexpectedly bit and scratched her.

The attack left the 47-year-old with serious injuries to her forearm and shoulder, including multiple deep cuts and lacerations.

Dreamworld is home to several tigers, including three five-year-olds — Khan, Javi, and Zakari — but it’s still unknown which of the tigers was involved in the attack.

Ms Reynolds, a familiar face at the park, has been featured in local publications posing with the tigers, and even appeared on Channel 9’s Today Show back in 2012.

During her appearance, she spoke fondly of her job: “It is amazing, you get the opportunity to spend time with them, feed them and play with them.”

After the attack, Ms Reynolds was rushed to the hospital, where she remains in stable condition.

Justin Payne, the acting district director of the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS), praised the first responders for their quick action. “The biggest risk to the injuries Ms Reynolds sustained was the likelihood of her wounds becoming infected,” Payne explained. He added, “Thankfully, on (the paramedics’) arrival, the bleeding had been managed very well by first aid providers there at Dreamworld, which was excellent to see.”

Payne also credited Ms Reynolds’ training and the support from her colleagues at the scene.

“We believe she was well-trained, and it’s good to see that she was able to be looked after by other support staff there,” he said.

500 Words Essay on My Dream Vacation Singapore

Introduction to my dream vacation.

Everyone has a place they wish to visit once in their life, and for me, that place is Singapore. Known for its clean streets, tall buildings, and beautiful gardens, Singapore is like a playground for both kids and adults. In this essay, I will share why I dream of going to Singapore for my ideal holiday.

The Marvel of Marina Bay Sands

At the top of my list is Marina Bay Sands, a huge hotel that looks like a ship resting on three tall towers. It’s famous for its rooftop pool which is the highest swimming pool in the world. Imagine swimming and feeling like you are on top of the world! There’s also a big mall and a museum shaped like a lotus flower. I can’t wait to see the light show at night when the water and lights dance together. It’s like a fairy tale come to life.

Universal Studios: A Day of Fun

I love movies and rides, so Universal Studios is a must-visit for me. It’s a theme park filled with roller coasters and shows based on famous movies. I can already picture myself screaming on a roller coaster or laughing during a live show. There’s a street that looks just like Hollywood, and I can meet characters from my favorite films. This place is perfect for someone who wants to feel like they’ve stepped into a different world.

The Beauty of Gardens by the Bay

Another spot I dream of visiting is Gardens by the Bay. This place is not like any regular garden. It has giant tree-like structures that light up in the dark. These ‘Supertrees’ are covered in plants and they look magical at night. There is also a big greenhouse that has a waterfall inside it. It’s amazing how a busy city like Singapore has such a peaceful and beautiful place.

Wildlife Adventures

Singapore also has a zoo where animals live in spaces that look like their natural homes. I’m excited to see the white tigers and have breakfast with orangutans. They even have a night safari, where you can see animals that are awake in the dark. It’s like going on a jungle adventure without any danger.

Delicious Food

I can’t talk about my dream vacation without mentioning food. Singapore is known for its tasty dishes that come from many different cultures. There are places called hawker centers where you can eat a lot of different foods without spending too much money. I want to try chicken rice, laksa, and satay. It’s going to be a yummy experience!

Conclusion: Why Singapore?

Singapore is my dream vacation because it has something for everyone. It’s a city that never stops shining, with places that make you feel like you’re in the future and others that take you on an adventure. From swimming high in the sky to eating delicious food, every moment would be unforgettable. I hope one day I can turn this dream into a reality and have the best holiday in Singapore.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.
