Inspired by the Destination

For 90+ years, the Tauck family has had a passion for sailing — aboard small ships and yachts at sea, riverboats along great inland waterways, and at home on the rivers and lakes of Connecticut and New York. When we began blending our land experience with our strong passion for cruising in our first European river cruise back in 1992, we knew that no "ordinary" river cruise experience would do for our guests. We wanted them to travel Europe's rivers in the same beyond-the-ordinary Tauck style they experienced on our land trips. With that in mind, we searched to find a company to partner with that would share our values and our commitment to "do the right thing" by our guests... and found it in another family-owned company, Scylla. Together, we crafted a river cruise experience that was ahead of its time and inspired by the destinations we explore.

9 best river cruises in Europe

Fran Golden

River cruising in Europe is one of those delightfully slow and easy modes of travel. You're in a small floating hotel, exploring calm inland waters, gliding past castles and vineyards and scenery that changes by the hour.

Daily escorted walking tours and other excursions provided by the river line take you to key UNESCO World Heritage Sites and other city and village attractions you've come to see. Or you can choose to explore on your own, which is easy since your ship often will dock right in town.

Lazy afternoons on the ship afford the time to sit in a lounge chair and watch the world go by — kids swimming from the riverbanks, farmers tending their crops, river birds flapping their wings — as you glide to your next destination.

Which European river should you explore? The choices are broader than you might expect.

The main rivers in Europe are the Danube and the Rhine and their tributaries. They are, by far, the most popular, doable either on one-week segments or longer itineraries that combine areas and sometimes combine rivers. Even if your cruise is only a week, don't underestimate the allure of relaxing for seven days on a river in France or on the dreamy Douro in Portugal.

Here are the best river cruises in Europe.

Upper Danube

river cruise deals europe

When it comes to Europe river cruises, a perfect seven-night starter sailing is the Upper Danube, which takes you through centuries of history as you explore Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.

Ships visit such cultural hubs as Vienna, with its opera and art museums and elaborate royal palaces, and Budapest, Hungary, with its magnificent architecture and modern vibe. If your ship passes the Hungarian Parliament building at night, you're in for a treat; magnificently lit, it's one of the most photographed sights on the river.

Along the route, between Melk and Krems in Austria, you cruise through the Wachau Valley, a key wine-growing region producing rieslings and gruner veltliners, with sipping opportunities available. It's also a great place to bike, which is why it's nice to sail with lines, such as AmaWaterways , that carry bikes on board for passengers to use.

You might also have the option of a side trip to Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart — and also where several scenes for the movie "Sound of Music" were filmed. A surprise for many is Old Town Bratislava, Slovakia, which might not have been on your must-do list but which charms with its beer culture and castles.

Lower Danube

river cruise deals europe

For a deep dive into Eastern Europe's past and present, the fascinating Lower Danube route between Budapest and Bucharest, Romania, explores history from the medieval times and Victorian era of Dracula to the rise of communism and the Bosnian War.

The seven-night river cruise takes you through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. The most beautiful stretch of the river is a 62-mile passage through a gorge between the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains. It's also one of the deepest stretches of river in the world.

Other sights accessed on shore excursions via bus include Bulgaria's Belogradchik Rocks, which are naturally carved towering red rock pinnacles that appear to take forms such as "Madonna with child," and Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria's stunning medieval capital.

When it comes to top cruising rivers in Europe, the Rhine wins for natural beauty and fairytale landscapes. A cruise on the river between Amsterdam in The Netherlands, and Basel, Switzerland — a typical one-week route — takes you past expanses of slope-side vineyards, forests and mountains, historic cities and medieval half-timbered villages.

That's even before you get to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 40-mile stretch of river, between Rudesheim and Koblenz, Germany, has castles galore — you might imagine Rapunzel letting down her hair — and Lorelei Rock, the legendary cliff said to distract sailors with the mesmerizing song of a maiden.

The French city of Strasbourg, with its famous Gothic cathedral and robust Alsatian culinary scene, is often a favorite stop on Rhine itineraries, with other highlights including Heidelberg, Germany, and its imposing castle.

Sure, you can catch sight of the Eiffel Tower when boarding a river ship in Paris, but you can do that while staying in a hotel, too. The real attractions of a Seine River cruise are sailing on the river outside the city toward the English Channel and a visit to the beaches in Normandy for a perspective on World War II.

Your visit there and to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, as well as other memorials and monuments to the fallen, is a poignant experience (one that requires a two-hour bus ride from your ship, however). Avalon Waterways brings a World War II expert on board to add insight on select sailings.

Other treasures exist along the Seine, not the least of which is Giverny, the home and gardens of impressionist artist Claude Monet. If you are a fan of his art, much of the property might seem familiar.

In historic Rouen, where Joan of Arc was martyred in the Middle Ages, stop by the Rouen Cathedral (another subject of Monet) before losing yourself on cobblestone streets with wonderful cafes.

Bordeaux river cruises are different from other water routes because you explore two short waterways — the Dordogne and Garonne Rivers — and the Gironde Estuary in Southwest France.

You'll spend more time ashore than floating down the river on this itinerary, with your ship docked for two nights in the city of Bordeaux, a mini-Paris with grand 18th-century buildings. Who cares when you are in the epicenter of French culture, in one of the most celebrated wine regions in the world?

Bordeaux serves up the opportunity to sip Medoc, Margaux, Saint-Emilion, Pomerol and Sauternes wines as you expand your wine education. You'll visit vineyards and gorgeous chateaus. Your cruise line might even host a dinner at a wine estate one evening. If you plan your cruise for September or October, you'll be able to admire the grape harvest.

Rhone and Saone

river cruise deals europe

Another must for wine-lovers is exploring the interior of France, sipping Cotes du Rhone in such famous winemaking regions as Hermitage and Chateauneuf-du-Pape in Provence and Beaune in Burgundy.

Rhone and Saone River cruises typically sail between Lyon and Arles or Avignon, and they're top-loaded with such non-wine attractions as the Roman aqueduct Pont du Gard and the Roman Arles Amphitheater, as well as the massive Palais des Papes (Papal Palace) in Avignon. You'll also be able to take in the lavender fields, haystacks and other scenes that inspired painters like Paul Cezanne and Vincent Van Gogh.

For a lazy, dreamy, wonderful river cruise experience, nothing quite beats exploring the wine regions of Portugal on the Douro, one of the major rivers through the Iberian Peninsula. The home base for these river cruises is Porto, Portugal, with its historic city center, spectacular bridges and port houses.

On one-week cruises, you'll follow the river 130 miles past green hillside vineyards in the Douro River Valley, a UNESCO-recognized destination, before turning around at the Spanish border. The river cruises typically include a visit to the university town of Salamanca in northern Spain. Viticulture is very much the lesson en route, as you learn about port production on the "River of Gold."

Due to fluctuating water levels and narrow passages, the Elbe is a challenging river that runs 680 miles between the Czech Republic and Germany. Historically, it formed part of the border between East Germany and West Germany.

River cruising here is a rare experience. Viking River Cruises is one of the few lines that visits (another is the French line CroisiEurope), offering 10-day itineraries that combine hotel stays in the cities of Berlin and Prague with a stretch of river between Prague and Wittenburg, Germany.

The cruises are on ships built specifically for the Elbe route. They stop in places such as resurgent Dresden, heavily bombed during World War II but expertly rebuilt; the Saxon Switzerland region of Germany with its striking sandstone rock formations; and the spa town of Bad Schandau.

The Po River in northern Italy is tidal, making it another challenging waterway. However, it affords the opportunity to combine a visit to Venice with a river cruise. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises does the Po in high style with its 126-passenger S.S. La Venizia, completely decked out with a sense of place, from Fortuny fabrics and Murano glass to its gilded accents.

The one-week route doesn't take you far but does include the walled city of Padua, the charming fishing village of Chioggia, and the culinary mecca of Bologna.

For those looking for a longer experience, Uniworld cleverly combines a Po cruise with luxury rail journeys to places like Istanbul, Switzerland and beyond.

Frequently asked questions

Cruises sail on almost every river in Europe and the most popular are the Rhine, Danube, Seine, Rhone and Douro. You’ll see plenty of cruise ships plying these waters, lined up at ports and navigating the locks during the busy summer season.

The Rhine River is the busiest in Europe. Snaking its way across the continent between the Netherlands and Switzerland, it’s a popular choice for first time cruisers. One of the most popular Rhine cruises is the classic one-week voyage between Amsterdam and the Swiss city of Basel, with stops in ports like Cologne and Strasbourg.

The Danube is also a favourite. The second longest river in Europe (after the Volga), it flows for almost 3,000km through most of Central and Eastern Europe including Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania. You can even combine a cruise along the Rhine and Danube rivers to sail the entire width of Europe.

The Douro River is the third-longest river in the Iberian Peninsula, stretching almost 900km from its source near Duruelo de la Sierra in Spain to its outlet at Porto, Portugal. On a floating holiday along the Douro, expect scenic views of terraced vineyards in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Douro Valley, delightful towns and picture-perfect landscapes, along with an exciting blend of cultures and cuisine from around the world.

Cruising the Seine is an excellent way to experience northern France. Originating in Burgundy, the Seine River ebbs through Paris and into the English Channel at Le Havre. Many Seine itineraries begin and end in Paris, giving passengers the opportunity to delve deeper into the French capital before or after their cruise. For more French joi de vivre, sail through the south of the country on the Rhone and Saone rivers or explore legendary wine country with a cruise on the Garonne River through Bordeaux.

Other rivers that feature on European cruise itineraries include the Main River, Moselle River and Elbe River.

River cruises pass through almost every country in Central Europe as well as some in Eastern Europe. Depending on the river you choose, you may visit one country or a dozen.

The Danube flows through 10 countries. Starting from Germany, it passes through (or forms part of the borders of) Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova. The Rhine River moves through or borders Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, France and the Netherlands. The Douro River begins in Spain and ends in Portugal. A number of cruises sail through France on the Seine, Rhone, Saone and Garonne rivers.

Spring and autumn are popular for their pleasant weather, greener landscapes and fewer crowds. Late spring in May has mild temperatures and lighter crowds. Summer – June, July, August – is also superb for cruising, especially for sunlovers, but it’s worth noting that popular cities get crowded in the warmer months. September is also a favoured month; the sun is still shining but crowds from summer high season have dispersed a little.

Typically, all meals are included on European river cruises. That means breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, along with snacks in between, at the onboard restaurants. Many include complimentary wine or beer during meals and some include free-flowing drinks all day. Remember to check your specific packages before you cruise.

Yes, entertainment is a big part of European river cruises and will help to immerse you in the destinations. Many cruise lines invite local musicians onboard at each port, providing an authentic connection to regions that have a strong tradition of music. Other entertainment options onboard might include dance, theatre, art classes and cooking demonstrations. River ships don’t have the same large theatres as ocean ships, so you’ll be able to enjoy these performances in intimate spaces or even on the outdoor sun deck.

They might both be called cruising, but an ocean cruise and a river cruise are completely different experiences. River cruises offer a more intimate getaway, both onboard and ashore. The smaller vessels required to navigate narrow waterways can get super close to cities and carry fewer passengers – usually less than 200. Ocean cruise ships are significantly larger, with some carrying more than 4,000 guests.

If you prefer a serene getaway, river cruises are perfect! Due to the size of river cruise ships, you won’t find oodles of shops, bars, restaurants, fitness centres, and casinos on board either. Just one or two dining venues, some outdoor space, possibly a swimming pool and a small fitness centre or spa. Lastly, river cruises boast more stops along the way, with short sailing distances and more time spent in port. Ocean cruises often involve days at sea and additional transport from large ports to city centres.

Many river cruises come with selected excursions included in your fare, but you’ll need to check with your travel agent or the cruise line. Some lines have different tiers of shore excursions – basic excursions are included but you need to pay extra for the fancier ones. Free options usually include the guided walking, cycling or bus tours that set off from each port of call and are a meaningful aspect of river cruising. Viking River Cruises offer one complimentary shore excursion in every port of call as part of their inclusive packages, and Uniworld boasts fantastic active options, such as hiking, cycling, kayaking, and even golfing. As a general rule, the more expensive the cruise, the more will be included.

Absolutely. Smaller passenger numbers mean river cruises can more easily be tailored around specific hobbies and interests, so there are lots of options. There are cruises for budding writers, photographers, music lovers, art afficionados and even garden groupies. Wine-themed cruises are trendy in Europe, especially along rivers that flow through renowned wine-producing regions such as the Danube and the Rhine. Guests can explore vineyards, enjoy wine tastings, and wine masterclasses. History buffs can book a themed cruise with history talks and expert-led tours to heritage sites – sometimes they even dress in full Viking or Crusader costume! Battlefield and war-themed tours are also popular in France and Germany, particularly around significant anniversaries. In the festive holiday season, book a magical Christmas river cruise that takes you to the charming yuletide markets along the Danube and Rhine rivers.

While generally more compact than ocean cruise cabins, river cruise cabins are well-designed for a sense of space and modern comfort. The size of cabins can vary based on the river cruise line and cabin type you choose, but usually range between around 14sqm for entry level cabins up to 20swm for suites. Cabins are cleverly considered and feature amenities such as comfortable queen or king size beds, private bathrooms, and windows or balconies for scenic outside views.

There are 27 European countries in the Schengen Area, which includes European cruise destinations like the Netherlands, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Spain and Portugal. Travellers from many nations are allowed to travel freely within the Schengen area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa. If you’re travelling to non-Schengen countries, you may need to apply for a visa. You should always check with your travel expert and check with your relevant government authority.

River Cruise Tour Reviews

The tour was fantastic, food and accommodation was great. Hassan went above and beyond to fulfil all of my needs would highly recommend.
The Trip was perfect to explore the most important places between Assuan and Luxor. You will see a lot. Every Staff Member and Guide is very kind and helpful. Hassan our guide was very kind and funny! Je has a big knowledge about the history of Egypt. The cruise was very clean, beautiful and was good to relax or to relax at the pool. It had good food, especially the egyptian night. Drinks are not included but you get water on every tour. 5/5
We were delighted with all the trips we did, the arrangements were always spot on, and our guide was so knowledgeable and made everything come to life for us. The boat accommodation and customer service was of a high standard too. We were a little disappointed with the food as it was largely the same buffet every day and not as flavoursome as we had expected, but plenty of choice. We loved the cruising down the nile and would have preferred more of that than sitting docked - usually between other boats so no view - with unpleasant fumes. We were keen to see the lock too, but it was timed that we went through it at 4 am!

  • Read traveler testimonials and professional critiques, as well as consider industry awards and customer satisfaction ratings when selecting the best river cruise company for your European adventure.

Understanding European River Cruises

The appeal of river cruising in europe.

European river cruises offer a unique way to experience the beauty and charm of Europe. Imagine gliding along picturesque waterways, passing by historic castles, vineyards, and quaint villages. It’s a relaxing and immersive way to explore multiple destinations in one trip.

Key Routes and Destinations

When choosing a European river cruise company, consider the key routes and destinations they offer. Popular routes like the Rhine, Danube, and Seine rivers take you through iconic cities such as Amsterdam, Budapest, and Paris. Each route has its own attractions and cultural highlights, so it’s essential to align your preferences with the itinerary offered by the cruise company.

What to Look for in a River Cruise Company

Quality of service.

When selecting a river cruise company for your European adventure, prioritize the quality of service they offer. You want a company that not only meets but exceeds your expectations. Look for reviews from past travelers to gauge the level of service provided. A top-tier river cruise company should have well-trained staff who are attentive to your needs throughout the journey. Your comfort and enjoyment should be their top priority.

Itinerary and Excursion Options

Evaluate the itinerary and excursion options offered by the river cruise company. Ensure that the routes they take align with your travel preferences. Whether you’re interested in exploring historic landmarks, quaint villages, or vibrant cities, the itinerary should cater to your interests. A diverse range of excursions allows you to fully immerse yourself in the European experience. Look for cruises that offer a good balance of guided tours and free time for independent exploration.

Ship Amenities and Accommodations

Consider the ship amenities and accommodations provided by the river cruise company. Your onboard experience plays a significant role in your overall enjoyment. Look for amenities that enhance your comfort and relaxation, such as spacious cabins, gourmet dining options, and entertainment facilities. Modern and well-maintained ships contribute to a pleasant journey along Europe’s picturesque rivers. Choose a cruise company that offers a blend of luxury and convenience onboard.

Sustainability and Environmental Practices

Prioritize sustainability and environmental practices when selecting a river cruise company. Responsible travel is essential to protect the delicate ecosystems along the rivers. Opt for companies that implement eco-friendly initiatives, such as waste management programs, energy-efficient practices, and support for local conservation efforts. By choosing a cruise company committed to sustainability, you can minimize your impact on the environment and contribute to the preservation of Europe’s natural beauty.

Top Contenders for Best River Cruise Company in Europe

When considering the best river cruise company for your European adventure, several top contenders stand out for their exceptional service, itineraries, and amenities. Here are three renowned companies known for providing unforgettable experiences:

Viking River Cruises

Viking River Cruises is a well-established name synonymous with luxury and exploration on European rivers. Known for its meticulously planned itineraries, comfortable accommodations, and culturally enriching excursions, a journey with Viking promises a blend of elegance and adventure. Imagine cruising along the Danube River, visiting charming villages, sampling local cuisine, and immersing yourself in the rich history of Europe, all while enjoying top-notch service aboard a Viking longship.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection

Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection sets itself apart with its focus on boutique luxury and personalized experiences. Each Uniworld cruise is a masterpiece of sophistication, combining opulent décor, gourmet dining, and tailor-made shore excursions to create a truly indulgent journey. Picture yourself sailing down the Seine River in France, marveling at iconic landmarks, savoring fine wines, and being pampered by Uniworld’s attentive staff, ensuring every moment is nothing short of extraordinary.

AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways is synonymous with elegance, innovation, and sustainability in river cruising. With a commitment to eco-friendly practices, AmaWaterways offers guests not only a luxurious experience but also a responsible one. Picture yourself cruising the Rhine River, enjoying panoramic views from your stateroom, savoring award-winning cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients, and participating in enriching onboard activities that cater to your interests. A journey with AmaWaterways is not just a vacation; it’s a mindful exploration of Europe’s waterways.

Embarking on a European river cruise with one of these esteemed companies ensures a memorable and immersive travel experience that combines luxury, comfort, and cultural discovery. So, when planning your next adventure along Europe’s enchanting rivers, consider these top contenders to make your journey truly exceptional.

Comparing Prices and Value Offers

All-inclusive vs. a la carte pricing.

When selecting a river cruise company, it’s crucial to understand the difference between all-inclusive and a la carte pricing. With all-inclusive packages, the upfront cost typically covers accommodations, dining, entertainment, and select excursions. This pricing model simplifies budgeting as most expenses are bundled into a single payment. On the other hand, a la carte pricing allows you to pay for specific services or amenities individually. While this may provide more flexibility, it can result in additional expenses throughout your cruise.

  • With an all-inclusive package from Company A, you pay a fixed fee that includes gourmet meals, shore excursions, and onboard activities. This predictability helps you plan and manage your budget effectively.
  • Conversely, with a la carte pricing from Company B, you might pay separately for meals, excursions, and onboard services. While you have more control over what you pay for, the costs can add up quickly.

Understanding your preferences and budgeting style can help you decide whether an all-inclusive or a la carte pricing structure better suits your needs.

Early Booking and Seasonal Discounts

Securing early booking or taking advantage of seasonal discounts can significantly impact the overall cost of your European river cruise. Many cruise companies offer early booking discounts for reservations made well in advance. By booking early, you can often access lower fares and enjoy a wider selection of available cabins and itineraries.

Seasonal discounts are another way to save on your river cruise. Traveling during off-peak seasons, such as late fall or early spring, can lead to reduced prices and fewer crowds. Additionally, some companies offer special promotions during specific times of the year, such as holiday sales or anniversary discounts.

  • Company C provides a 15% discount on fares for reservations made six months before the departure date. By booking early, you not only save money but also have the opportunity to choose from premium cabin options.
  • During the shoulder season, Company D offers discounted rates on selected European river cruises. Traveling during this period allows you to enjoy the same exceptional experience at a lower cost compared to peak season rates.

By keeping an eye out for early booking incentives and seasonal promotions, you can maximize your savings while embarking on a memorable European river cruise.
