July records highest monthly tourist arrivals in 2023

The country’s tourism sector continues to bounce back as July 2023 recorded the highest monthly arrivals of tourists this year with a total of 143,039, according to figures published by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).

In July 2022, when the country was grappling with the peak of the economic crisis, the number of tourist arrivals in the month of July had dipped to 47,293.

Official figures showed that tourist arrivals in July 2023 have recorded an increase of 202.4% in comparison to July 2022.

The cumulative figure of tourist arrivals for the first seven months of 2023 (January-July) thus climbed to 767,913, while the entirety of the year 2022 recorded only 719,978.

According to the SLTDA, the top 10 source markets for Sri Lanka’s tourism in July 2023 were India, the United Kingdom, China, Germany, Russia, France, the Netherlands, Maldives, Canada and Australia, respectively.

July to become best month for tourist arrivals: Numbers revealed

The highest number of tourist arrivals so far in 2023 is expected to be reported in the month of July, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) stated.

According to the SLTDA, with three days left in the month, a total of 123,503 tourist arrivals have been reported so far in July 2023.

Earlier this year, March reported the highest number of tourist arrivals with 125, 495 arrivals.

Based on the tourist arrivals reported between 1- 27th July 2023, India leads the source market with 20,779 arrivals.

United Kingdom with 15,126 tourist arrivals, China with 8,446 arrivals, Germany with 6,842 arrivals, and Russia with 6,374 round up the top five source markets for July 2023. 

The remaining tourist arrivals have been reported from France, the Maldives, the Netherlands, Canada, and Australia. 

Sri Lanka has reported a total of 748,377 tourist arrivals to date in 2023, an increase from the 719, 978 tourist arrivals reported for 2022. (NewsWire)

Sri Lanka recorded 143, 039 tourist arrivals for July, 2023, the highest monthly arrivals recorded so far this year.

This was revealed by data released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).

For the first seven months of the year, Sri Lanka welcomed 767, 913 visitors, compared to 719, 978 recorded for the full year of 2022.

In July, India emerged as the top tourist traffic generator for Sri Lanka, accounting for 16 percent of the total arrivals.

July 2023 records highest tourist arrivals since Covid outbreak

July 2023 recorded the highest ever tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka within a single month since the onset of the Covid pandemic, surpassing the total number of tourist arrivals for the entire year of 2022, within just seven months.

This is a tremendous boost for the Sri Lankan Tourism industry and a welcome change as the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority together with the Tourism Ministry has been working hard using every possible avenue to increase tourist arrivals from around the world, post Covid.

The first 27 days of July 2023 recorded an outstanding 123,503 foreign visitors arriving in Sri Lanka which has propelled the cumulative number of tourist arrivals in the island to an incredible 748,377 thus far.

Tourism Minister Harin Fernando recognises this as a positive and a welcome change in the tourism industry, seeing this astounding surge in tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka this year (2023), especially the highest influx of arrivals in July 2023, as a confirmation that Sri Lanka stands as a top travel destination in the world, stressing the high potential the island has to further enhance its Tourism industry.

The Minister said that besides the highest recorded tourist arrivals, the gross revenue earned has exceeded US$ 1 billion thus far, which is a tremendous boost in tourism revenue and earnings within such a short period of time this year, after several setbacks the country faced in the past few years, which affected the Tourism industry adversely plunging it to an all-time low.

The Easter Sunday attacks and the Covid pandemic outbreak together with subsequent turmoil experienced in the country saw the tourist arrivals from across the world dwindling down to an unprecedented low level which in turn brought down the Tourism industry earnings in Sri Lanka.

The daily averages of tourist arrivals compared between June and July this year shows a steady increase, where the daily average in July surged to 4,574 from the 3,346 recorded in June.

It is estimated to achieve a record estimated figure of 137,594 tourist arrivals by the end of July 2023.

Sri Lanka is on its way to bouncing back as a key player in the Tourism industry to becoming a high-end tourist destination competing with other major players like India, the United Kingdom, China, Germany and Russia that are currently holding the leading edge in the tourism market.

The Tourism Minister said that Japan, Australia and the Republic of Korea are seen as emerging tourism markets and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) is focusing on conducting major awareness and marketing campaigns very soon.

The quick and steady recovery of the Sri Lankan Tourism industry is a result of the collective efforts of the Government of Sri Lanka and the private sector and SMEs and the upward trend in tourist arrivals and earnings resembles a promising future for this all-important foreign-exchange generating industry and its major role played in the economic growth of the country, the Minister said.

Dawn of the New Year

According to the Gregorian calendar, Sri Lankans also celebrate the beginning of the new year on the 1 st of January.

• Date of Celebration: Sunday, 1 st of January 2023
• Significance: First day of the year according to the Gregorian calendar
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: Even though the 1st of January is not a public holiday in Sri Lanka, Sri Lankans also celebrate the day to welcome the new year. So, a ‘Kiribath’ dish, a traditional Sri Lankan dish prepared with rice and coconut milk, is enjoyed in every household as the first meal of the new year. Since Sri Lanka is a country that always gives priority to its religious and cultural values, many tend to visit their respective religious places to get blessings for the upcoming year. Like in any other country, the youngsters start the new year with a blast along with the 31 st night celebrations. As such, Sri Lankans welcome the new year with many celebrations to take a fresh start.

Duruthu Full Moon Poya Day

This is the first Poya day of the year which is important for the Buddhists in Sri Lanka. However, it is important to keep in mind that the Poya days are public holidays in Sri Lanka.

• Date of Celebration: Friday, 6 th January 2023
• Significance: On a Duruthu poya day, Lord Buddha visited Sri Lanka for the first time and left his footprint on Adam’s peak .
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: Buddhists visit the temple to engage in various religious observances such as observing sil, Bodhi puja, and almsgiving. This poya day is also the beginning of the pilgrimage season to Adam’s peak. From this poya day onwards, the pilgrims can visit Adam’s peak to worship Lord Buddha’s footprint.

Thai Pongal Festival

This is a religious festival celebrated by the Tamils. The main purpose of the Thai Pongal festival is to show gratitude towards mother nature for offering a good harvest.

• Date of Celebration: Sunday, 15 th January 2023
• Significance: This day is dedicated to the Sun God and this is basically a thanksgiving ceremony for the goodwill of mother nature.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: In Sri Lanka, the Thai Pongal festival is well known as an event of retreat. Sri Lankan Tamils celebrate the festival to pay tribute to the sun, cattle, and nature for the support extended towards their agricultural purposes. Boiling milk marks the beginning of the various festivities. Moreover, Tamils decorate their house with ‘kolam’ patterns for the festival and they prepare various traditional sweetmeats and a sweet Pongal rice dish for the special day. They share these food items with their neighbors and relatives. Another special item of the Thai Pongal festival is bathing their cattle, decorating them, and treating them with festive food. Furthermore, the Tamils visit the kovil to offer their gratitude to the Gods and take the blessings for the new year.

Important Events and Special Days in February 2023

There are only a few special days for Sri Lankans in the month of February.

Independence Day

National Independence Day is unarguably the most important day in the month of February for Sri Lankans.

• Date of Celebration: Saturday, 4 th February 2023
• Significance: On 4 th February 1948, Sri Lanka gained political independence from British rule after being colonized by three nations for a period of over five centuries.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: Sri Lanka celebrates its 75th independence in 2023. On this day, Sri Lankans celebrate the bravery and freedom of the Sri Lankan nation with pride. The main event for Independence Day is held at Independence Square in Colombo with the Sri Lankan president, prime minister, ministers, other dignitaries, and foreign officials gracing the occasion. A parade of the Tri forces and other cultural performances can be seen in this event. All Sri Lankans raise the national flag at their homes to celebrate their nation. It is a public holiday in Sri Lanka.

Navam Full Moon Poya Day

This is the poya day of the month of February and it is also a public holiday in Sri Lanka.

• Date of Celebration: Sunday, 5 th February 2023
• Significance: The first-ever Buddhist congregation and the appointment of the two chief disciples happened on a Navam poya day.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: Buddhists visit the temple to observe their religion. Apart from that, Ganagaramaya temple in Colombo organize its perahera festival on this poya day.

Maha Shivaratri Festival

Maha Shivaratri is another important festival for the Hindus in Sri Lanka. It is popularly known as the ‘Great night of Shiva’.

• Date of Celebration: Saturday, 18 th February 2023
• Significance: This festival is to celebrate God Shiva and according to popular belief, Lord Shiva performs his heavenly dance on this day.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: This festival symbolizes overcoming darkness and ignorance. The religious festivities include bathing the Shiva linga with milk, offering prayers, fasting, and conducting various puja as means of respect for the God Shiva. Moreover, Hindus organize colorful and vibrant festivals in Shiva temples for Maha Sivaratri day.

Important Events and Special Days in March 2023

Poya day is the only special event marked in the calendar for the month of March 2023 for Sri Lankans.

Madin Full Moon Poya Day

This is another important poya day for the Buddhists in Sri Lanka.

• Date of Celebration: Monday, 6 th March 2023
• Significance: Lord Buddha visited his family after six years of enlightenment on a Madin poya day. On this day, Lord Buddha’s son, Prince Rahula entered the Buddha sasana.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: On this poya day also, Buddhists visit the temples to observe the Dhamma teachings of the Lord Buddha.

Bak Full Moon Poya Day

The special days of the month of April start with the Bak full moon poya day.

• Date of Celebration: Wednesday, 5 th April 2023
• Significance: Lord Buddha paid his second visit to Sri Lanka on a Bak poya day. This was after five years of enlightenment.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: Buddhists engage in their usual religious activities on this poya day as well. In fact, they visit temples, observe sil, and listen to Dhamma sermons.

Good Friday

This is an important day for Christians as they celebrate Good Friday before the Easter celebrations to pay respect for the sacrifices made by Jesus Christ.

• Date of Celebration: Friday, 7 th April 2023
• Significance: To commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Cavalry
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: There are church services in the afternoon for Good Friday which usually lasts for 3 hours symbolizing the last hours of Jesus Christ. Christians attend these church services wearing sober attire as it is considered a day of mourning. Further, this is a public holiday in Sri Lanka.

Easter Sunday

This is another religious festival celebrated by Christians in the month of April.

• Date of Celebration: Sunday, 9 th April 2023
• Significance: This is to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: Christians attend the church services held with joy and celebration as it is celebrated for the empathy of Jesus Christ towards humankind. In the present, Sri Lankans also accompany events like Easter parties to celebrate Easter Sunday. However, such events can be seen mainly around urban areas.

Sinhala and Tamil New Year

Sinhala and Tamil New Year day marks the beginning of the traditional new year and it is celebrated by the Sinhalese and Tamils in Sri Lanka.

• Date of Celebration: Friday, 14 th April 2022
• Significance: The day marks the beginning of the traditional new year as the sun moves from the Meena Rashiya (house of Pisces) to Mesha rashiya (house of Aries).
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: The traditional new year’s day is possibly the biggest celebration of the year for the Sinhalese and Tamil communities. There are many rituals and events during this season that are incorporated with religion, astrology, and culture. The main rituals include lighting the hearth, enjoying the Avurudu table, exchanging money and gifts, engaging in work at auspicious times, and anointing oil. Furthermore, Sinhalese and Tamils make traditional sweetmeats and celebrate the new year with their families. Moreover, they visit their relatives and friends to extend greetings. After these multiple festivities, Sinhalese and Tamils move on to the new year with hearts filled with warmth and happiness.

Eid-Al-Fitr

This is a festival celebrated by the Muslim community.

• Date of Celebration: Saturday, 22 nd April 2023
• Significance: This is the first of the two Eids in the Islamic calendar and it is held to break the holy fast of the Ramadan season.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: This is a joyful occasion for Muslims as they end their month of holy fasting and prayers on Eid-Al-Fitr. They observe their religion on this day by attending communal prayers and listening to sermons. They also make sure to engage in good deeds such as sharing food and money with the needy.

Important Events and Special Days in Sri Lanka in May 2023

May is an important month for Buddhists. The special days in the month of May are as follows.

This is International Workers’ Day which is celebrated in high regard in Sri Lanka.

• Date of Celebration: Monday, 1 st of May 2023
• Significance: The purpose of May Day is to celebrate the historic struggles and achievements of the working class along with the commemoration of the global labour movement.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: This is considered an important day for the political parties as they organize massive rallies to celebrate May Day which is usually held surrounding Colombo. This is a public holiday in Sri Lanka. So, public services and transportation modes don’t work on the day.

Vesak Full Moon Poya Day

Vesak is the most important day of the year in the Buddhist calendar. It is a festival with both religious and cultural values.

• Date of Celebration: Friday, 5 th May 2022
• Significance: Lord Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and death happened on a Vesak poya day. Apart from that also, there are several important events of Buddhism which happened on this day.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: Buddhists gather at temples around the country in remembrance of the sacred life of Lord Buddha. Apart from the religious observances, Buddhists also decorate their houses with Vesak lanterns, lights, and oil lamps. Furthermore, there are huge decorations with lights in the urban areas to celebrate Vesak poya day.

Important Events and Special Days in Sri Lanka in June 2023

June can be considered another important month for Buddhists and Muslims in Sri Lanka. These are the special days in the month of June.

Poson Full Moon Poya Day

Poson is an important poya day with much religious and historical importance.

• Date of Celebration: Saturday, 3 rd June 2023
• Significance: Arahat Mahinda introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka on a Poson poya day in the 3 rd century BC. King Ashoka of India sent his son, Arahat Mahinda to Sri Lanka with the sacred message of Buddhism. This happened during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: Arahat Mahinda arrived at the Missaka Pawwa , also famous as the ‘ Mihintale rock’ on his first visit to Sri Lanka. Therefore, the Poson celebrations are mainly held surrounding Anuradhapura and Mihintale areas. Buddhists engage in their religious observances. Further, there are Poson devotional songs, Poson pandols, and almsgiving stalls which are usually held across the country in honor of the Poson festival.

Eid-Al-Adha

Eid-Al-Adha is popularly known as the Hajj festival and it is the second event of the two main Muslim festivals.

• Date of Celebration: Thursday, 29 th June 2023
• Significance: This is also known as the ‘feast of sacrifice’ as it is celebrated for the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son under the command of Allah.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: Apart from the religious observances held in the mosque, they also celebrate it together with their families and friends. Furthermore, they engage in several good deeds usually within their community. 

Important Events and Special Days in Sri Lanka in July 2023

After a few buzzing months, the number of special events is gradually decreasing when it comes to the second half of the year.

Adhi Esala Full Moon Poya Day

This poya day is the only special day in the month of July 2023. And yes, it is yet another Poya day!

• Date of Celebration: Monday, 3 rd July 2023
• Significance: Adhi poya day is celebrated when there is an extra full moon day for the year.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: Buddhists visit the temples and perform their religious rituals on this poya day as well.

Important Events and Special Days in Sri Lanka in August 2023

Undoubtedly, the iconic Esala perahera is the highlight of the month. Here is more information on the Esala perahera and the other special days in August.

Esala Full Moon Poya Day

This is also another important poya day for the Buddhists in Sri Lanka.

• Date of Celebration: Tuesday, 1 st of August 2023
• Significance: Several important events of Buddhism happened on an Esala poya day such as the conception of Prince Siddhartha in Queen Mahamaya’s womb, the deliverance of the first discourse by Lord Buddha, and the preaching of Dhamma to the five ascetics, etc.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: A significant event that happens on the Esala poya day is the Buddhist monks observing ‘Vas’. It is the annual rain retreat for the monks. Apart from that, Buddhists engage in their religious rituals as usual on this Poya day.

The Grand Procession of Esala Perahera Festival

This glamorous Esala Perahera is a cultural procession that takes place in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

• Date of Celebration: Tuesday, 1 st August 2023
• Significance: This attractive celebration is held in honor of the sacred tooth relic which is placed in the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: Esala perahera festival is held for 10 days with grand processions and various religious ceremonies. Randoli Perahera, which is held on the last day, is the most spectacular event of the festival. There are decorated tuskers, drummers, traditional dancers, singers, flag bearers, torch-bearers, and nilames in the Kandy Esala Perahera. This perahera showcases the pride and the grandeur of the rich Sri Lankan culture to the whole world. This event attracts thousands of Sri Lankan pilgrims and tourists from all around the world. 

Nikini Full Moon Poya Day

Nikini poya day comes as the second poya day for the month of August 2023.

• Date of Celebration: Wednesday, 30 th August 2023
• Significance: Main events which happened on a Nikini poya day are the first Dhamma sangayana which was held after 3 months from Lord Buddha’s parinirvana and the attainment of arhatship by Lord Buddha’s chief disciple, Ananda Thero.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: Buddhists visit the temple to practise their religious observances. Furthermore, Buddhist monks can observe ‘Vas’ if they have missed the event on the previous poya day.

Important Events and Special Days in September 2023

There are only a few special days in the month of September. Here is more information on those days.

Milad-Un-Nabi

This is an important and the most popular festival for the Muslim community.

• Date of Celebration: Thursday, 28 th September 2023
• Significance: To celebrate the Prophet Muhammed’s birthday.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: Muslims follow many festivities such as recitals, family gatherings, and enjoying delicious meals on this special day. However, there are different ways of celebrating the festival within the Muslim community. They visit the mosque and also engage in various charity programs. Muslims celebrate the festival with much respect.

Binara Full Moon Poya Day

This is the poya day for the month of September.

• Date of Celebration: Friday, 29 th September 2023
• Significance: Females joined the Buddha sasana for the first time with the permission of Lord Buddha, upon the request of his stepmother, Queen Prajapati on a day like such.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: As usual, Buddhists engage in various religious practices throughout the poya day in Buddhist temples.

Important Events and Special Days in Sri Lanka in October 2022

Poya day is the only special day in the month of October.

Vap Full Moon Poya Day

This is one of the last poya days for the year 2023.

• Date of Celebration: Saturday, 28 th October 2023
• Significance: On a Vap poya day, Lord Buddha visited the Tavatimsa to teach Abhidhamma to his mother.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: As this is the ‘Vas’ season, Buddhists attend to the needs of the Buddhist monks who are staying in the temples. They also engage in their usual religious practices.

Important Events and Special Days in November 2023

There are some special days of religious value in the month of November. They are as follows.

Deepavali or the festival of lights is one of the major festivals celebrated by the Hindus in Sri Lanka. It is also well known as ‘Diwali’.

• Date of Celebration: Sunday, 12 th November 2023
• Significance: Deepavali is the beginning of the Hindu new year according to the lunar calendar.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: Hindus engage in various religious festivities for Deepavali which symbolizes the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. There are many colorful decorations with fireworks and lamps in Hindu households for Deepavali. Furthermore, they exchange traditional sweets and gifts with their family members and friends. Hindus visit the kovil wearing glamorous traditional attire to celebrate this festival.

Ill Full Moon Poya Day

This is the second last poya day for the year 2023.

• Date of Celebration: Sunday, 26 th November 2023
• Significance: On an Ill poya day, Lord Buddha obtained vivarana for his enlightenment by the Bodhisattva Maitreya.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: This is the last day of the three-month retreat followed by the Buddhist monks. Buddhists follow their religious observances on this poya day as well.

Important Events and Special Days in Sri Lanka in December 2023

Here comes the most wonderful month of the year which also marks the end of yet another year. 

This is the most important festival for Christians all around the world. Sri Lankans also join in to celebrate Christmas with much joy and happiness.

• Date of Celebration: Monday, 25 th December 2023
• Significance: To commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: There are midnight mass services in the churches to welcome Christmas. Moreover, on Christmas day, there are joyful celebrations with fireworks, family gatherings, and feasts. All Sri Lankans join hand in hand with the Christian and Catholic communities to celebrate Christmas. Besides, people decorate their houses with Christmas trees and other decorations. And yes, there are vibrant and huge decorations mainly surrounding the urban areas. So, it is indeed a delightful experience to roam around Sri Lanka during the Christmas season. However, at present, Christmas is not just a festival for Christians and Catholics. Other communities also join hand in hand with these celebrations. Unduvap Full Moon Poya Day

This is the last poya day of the year.

• Date of Celebration: Tuesday, 26 th December 2023
• Significance: Ven. Sangamitta brought a sacred Bo sapling to Sri Lanka on an Unduvap poya day. It is now famous as the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura.
• How Sri Lankans Celebrate: Buddhists engage in their religious activities in the temples on this last poya day of the year as well.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

If anywhere deserves to be called a year-round destination, it’s Sri Lanka . This small island boasts a diverse collection of microclimates – when it's raining on one stretch of coast, the weather is perfect for surfing or sightseeing on another.

This close to the equator, daytime temperatures hover at around 30°C (86°F) all year, so you won't have to worry too much about getting cold except in the hills. That said, it's worth considering how the two monsoon seasons affect different parts of the island before planning a trip, though it's easy to hop across the island if you get your forecasts confused.

On most trips, people mix up beach time with detours to national parks, and trips to the cooler highlands and ancient cities in the middle of the island, so you'll experience a mix of heat and cool on pretty much every visit.

And the Sri Lankan calendar is chock-full of festivals and holidays, offering a unique cultural highlight for visitors almost every month. Whether you’re looking to hit the beach , spot wild elephants , hike to the summit of Adam’s Peak, or simply avoid the tourist crowds, here are the best times to visit Sri Lanka.

December to March is the best time to hit the beach

Sri Lanka’s high season coincides with the driest weather in the south and west of the country. Popular beach resorts such as Hikkaduwa and Mirissa are at their most idyllic, but also busiest, aligning with excellent surfing conditions on the south and west coasts. However, the Maha monsoon season (October to January) keeps the Eas t, the North, and the  Ancient Cities humid and rainy at this time of year. 

Sri Lanka is a year-round wildlife-watching destination, but the best times to spot elephants, leopards and buffalo is during the main November-to-April tourist season. All the big parks are open and animals start to gather around water holes, making them easier to spot. However, the island's greatest wildlife spectacle – the "Gathering" of elephants at Minneriya National Park – takes place from July to September. 

By December, high season is in full swing, with bathers jostling for towel space on the beaches along the south and west coasts. The pilgrimage season on Adam’s Peak, when pilgrims of all faiths climb the sacred summit, starts in December and lasts until mid-April.

The end of December sees the island gear up for Christmas, which is celebrated enthusiastically by Sri Lanka’s Christian community. Followers of other faiths also join in secular events over the holidays – expect over-the-top decorations aplenty.

January is the peak of the tourist season in Sri Lanka. Crowds may be at their largest, and prices at their highest, but fine weather in the south and west makes this a particularly appealing time for a beach holiday, and many popular towns host major festivals during the first month of the year.

Events to note on your calendar include Duruthu Perahera in  Colombo , a lavish festival of lights, dances, and parades to celebrate the first visit to Sri Lanka by the Buddha. On the south coast, Galle 's more sedate annual literary festival takes over the city's Unesco-protected fort.

Visitor numbers are still high in February, with wintering Europeans baking themselves on the beaches in the warm winter weather. This is a busy month for Sri Lankans, with Independence Day early in the month, commemorated with festivals, parades, fireworks, and sporting events across the nation.

The festival of Maha Shivaratri in early March (or late February) brings another flurry of activity, with Hindus commemorating the marriage of Shiva to Parvati with all-night vigils and ceremonies. It’s the most important festival for Shaivite Tamils, who comprise the majority of Sri Lanka’s Hindus.

The Muslim festival of Ramadan moves forward 11 days each year relative to the Gregorian calendar – in 2024 and 2025, the month of fasting begins in March and February respectively, with some Muslim-owned businesses closing during daylight hours.

September to October and April are the best times for exploring the whole country

Squeezed between the two monsoon seasons, Sri Lanka’s twin shoulder seasons see agreeable weather right across the country, with fewer crowds and lower prices. April, however, does coincide with the busy Sinhala and Tamil New Year, which can cause transport troubles.

This is a good time for trekking in the Hill Country or climbing Sigiriya , as the weather is mostly dry but not as hot as in the height of summer. From August to September, hundreds of elephants group together for several weeks in Minneriya National Park during the annual Gathering. It's one of Asia’s great wildlife spectacles, and you have a good chance of seeing baby elephants.

October can be a bit unpredictable, with the summertime Yala monsoon fading and conditions building towards the Maha monsoon. Thunderstorms can arrive in the afternoons, and rain is common, but there's still good surfing on the east coast. Just add a raincoat to your list of things to pack.

After the busy winter season, April is warm and dry across the majority of the country, and prices fall as the peak season crowds depart. Although Christians comprise only six percent of Sri Lanka’s population, Christian festivals – including Easter, which usually falls in April – are still celebrated with gusto.

A more significant event in April is Avurudu, the Sinhalese and Tamil New Year. New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are official holidays, and over the days before and after, buses and trains are jammed as people flee from big cities to home villages.

May to August is the best time to avoid the crowds

The low season in Sri Lanka starts with the arrival of the Yala monsoon in May, which pounds the west and south coasts as well as the Hill Country until August. Accommodation prices during this period are generally lower and crowds are thinner.

This is the best time for trips to Jaffna in the North and the chilled-out resorts along the East Coast, such as Arugam Bay , known for its consistent point breaks and laid-back surf scene.

Despite the rain, many must-see festivals take place during this period, including Vesak Poya, a two-day festival in May when colored lights adorn every Buddhist home, shop, and temple. There's also the vibrant Esala Perahera in  Kandy , where thousands of dancers and drummers form a giant procession through the town.

The rains dampen tourism in June, except on the East Coast beaches, which stay drier at this time. Meanwhile, another major Buddhist event, the Poson Poya, gets underway, celebrating the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka. Major festivities take place in the temples of Anuradhapura , and thousands of white-clad pilgrims ascend the 1843 calf-busting steps to Mihintale’s sacred stupa .

For travelers who aren’t easily disheartened by the odd downpour, summer is a good time to be in Sri Lanka. The focal point for the country’s Buddhists is Esala Perahera in July or August, which lasts for 10 days. The Kandy Esala Perahera is legendary, but smaller parades are held across Sri Lanka. Many celebrations feature dancers, drummers, and stilt walkers who practice all year for the occasion.

Another large-scale procession takes place in Colombo as part of the Hindu festival of Aadi Vel, which sees the gilded chariot of Murugan (Skanda), the Hindu god of war, ceremonially hauled through the city’s streets.

August marks the last month of low season, with the Yala monsoon slowly beginning to ease. To maximize the chance of avoiding the rain, head north to Jaffna, where the famous  Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil hosts the spectacular Nallur Festival (sometimes starting in July). The event climaxes with parades of juggernaut floats and gruesome displays of self-mortification by entranced devotees.

Poya (full moon) days

It is worth noting that every poya (full moon) day is a holiday in Sri Lanka. White-clad pilgrims gather at Buddhist shrines and buses, trains, and accommodations fill up, especially if the full moon falls on a Friday or Monday. No alcohol is supposed to be sold on poya days and many bars close (though some hotels discreetly provide cold beer "under the table"). This is a particularly atmospheric time to visit the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree at Anuradhapura, grown from a cutting taken from the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment.

July records highest monthly tourist arrivals in 2023

The country’s tourism sector continues to bounce back as July 2023 recorded the highest monthly arrivals of tourists this year with a total of 143,039, according to figures published by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).

In July 2022, when the country was grappling with the peak of the economic crisis, the number of tourist arrivals in the month of July had dipped to 47,293.

Official figures showed that tourist arrivals in July 2023 have recorded an increase of 202.4% in comparison to July 2022.

The cumulative figure of tourist arrivals for the first seven months of 2023 (January-July) thus climbed to 767,913, while the entirety of the year 2022 recorded only 719,978.

According to the SLTDA, the top 10 source markets for Sri Lanka’s tourism in July 2023 were India, the United Kingdom, China, Germany, Russia, France, the Netherlands, Maldives, Canada and Australia, respectively.

Tourism industry on track for record-breaking year: Officials

Top officials of the tourism sector last week echoed that the industry is on a strong upward trajectory, with over 1.16 million visitors arriving so far in 2024. Tourism Ministry Secretary Somarathne Vidanapathirana expressed optimism that the country could surpass its benchmark year 2018 if current trends continue. He highlighted the multiple setbacks the tourism industry faced since 2019 whilst noting concerted efforts by the Government, private sector, and affiliated institutions have led to a promising recovery.  The Secretary made these remarks at the press briefing titled ‘Two Years of Progress and Advancement’ held at the Presidential Media Centre (PMC) last week. He noted that in 2022, 719,978 tourists visited Sri Lanka, and the number rose to 1,487,303 in 2023. As of 25 July, Sri Lanka welcomed over 1.16 million visitors, suggesting that the number of visitors by the end of the year could surpass the totals of the past two years.“The tourism sector reached its peak in 2018, with 2,333,796 visitors and $ 4.4 billion in revenue.”  “If the current positive trend continues, the number of foreign tourists and the income generated by the end of 2024 could exceed those of 2018,” said Vidanapathirana.  Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) Deputy Director General P.U. Rathnayake added that tourism revenue from January to June 2024 amounted to approximately $ 1.55 billion. “The SLTDA is dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism through the development and operation of large-scale resorts. Projects in Kuchchaveli, Kalpitiya, and Dedduwa are ready for promoters, with future projects in Kuchchaveli, Kalpitiya, and Yala open to investors. By 2024, the authority registered 12,213 service providers, including tourist accommodations, guides, and other service providers,” he added. By the first half of 2024, the authority registered 12,213 service providers, comprising 4,534 tourist accommodations, 4,923 tourist guides, and 2,756 other service providers. He said registration awareness and mobile programs have been implemented in locations such as Pasikuda, Batticaloa, Kitulgala, Kataragama, Meemure, Ella, Pinnawala, and Galle. National resorts for local tourists are currently operational in Bandarawela, Kataragama, Anuradhapura, and Nuwara Eliya.  He said over the past two years, several development projects have been completed, including those at Aluthnuwara, Madunagala, Dunhinda, Rajanawa Falls, Sandathanna Agricultural Project, Gatabaruwa Tourism Centre, and the Mount Lavinia Tourist Police Unit. “As of end June 2024, the SLTDA has approved 16 investment projects, totalling 224 approved rooms and an investment of approximately $ 25.39 million. Upcoming plans include developing a marine tourism roadmap, gazetting tourism development areas, creating master zoning plans in collaboration with the Urban Development Authority (UDA), and implementing a micro grid solar energy program to address the energy crisis,” Rathnayake said. Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) Chairman ChalakaGajabahu highlighted several successful marketing initiatives over the past two years, including the ‘Seeing is Believing’ project launched by the Public Relations Division, which hosted 189 international travel bloggers and communicators, resulting in media coverage valued at over Rs. 1 billion and participation in major travel fairs.  He detailed that the Marketing Division also utilised 15 major travel fairs and 29 road shows, including ITB in Germany, WTM in London, ATM in Dubai, IFTM in France, and SATTE in India, to promote tourism.  According to him, over 75 travel agencies and hotel professionals took part in these events. Additionally, a significant special project involved hosting 500 Indian travel agents and 50 Indian journalists at the TAAI (Travel Agents Association of India) conference, held in Sri Lanka for the first time. “We are currently launching a series of global tourism promotion programs, with the first phase focusing on public relations, with digital and social media campaigns in Britain, Germany, France, India, and China,” Gajabahu said. Inspired by these activities and projects over the past two years, the SLTPB introduced a new brand identity in 2023 under the theme ‘Sri Lanka – You’ll come back for more’. “This initiative received significant international acclaim and recognition in 2024,”Gajabahu added. Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) Chairman Shirantha Peiris reported that the institute trained thousands of students between 2021 and 2023, with plans to train over 10,000 trainees in 2024. “SLITHM is collaborating with national and international institutions to promote tourism and hospitality programs,” he added. Department of National Zoological Gardens Deputy Director (Planning) H.G.Jayasekara reported that in 2022 and 2023, the total number of local tourists to botanical gardens reached 1,773,048 and 1,925,129 respectively, with foreign tourists numbering 103,322 in 2022 and 227,729 in 2023.  By June 2024, the botanical gardens welcomed 965,468 local tourists and 183,674 foreign tourists, indicating a strong recovery and growth in tourism.“Revenue from Sri Lanka’s botanical gardens was Rs. 420.02 million in 2022, rising to Rs. 901.1 million in 2023. By June 2024, the gardens had already generated Rs. 735.56 million, marking substantial increases compared to previous years,” he added.

Thailand, Malaysia, China – and now Sri Lanka – are catching on: relaxing travel rules boosts tourism. With Sri Lanka eyeing a jump from 1.49 million visitors last year to 2.5 million this year, easing entry is their big play.

Sri Lanka is set to launch a six-month pilot program on October 1, offering free 30-day tourist visas on arrival to citizens from 35 countries, including the U.S., UK, Russia, India and China. The initiative, which temporarily waives the typical $50 visa fee, aligns with the island nation’s peak travel season, lasting from December to mid-April. This move is part of a broader strategy to revitalize tourism, a sector crucial to Sri Lanka’s economy.

Sri Lanka aims to welcome 2.5 million tourists and attract revenue worth $4 billion by the end of this year. Tourism arrivals peaked in 2018 in Sri Lanka, when 2.5 million tourists spent $4.4 billion in the country.

Last year in December the country finally announced its plans to roll out its global tourism marketing campaign urging tourists “You’ll Come Back For More,” marking the first such campaign since 2007.  

The free visa announcement comes amid ongoing concerns over a visa scam that has sparked significant controversy. In April, the Immigration Department, replaced the state-run telecommunications company Mobitel, which managed the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, with a consortium of foreign companies. The companies included Singapore-registered GBS Technology Services, the UAE-registered IVS Global-FZCO, and the Dubai-headquartered VFS VF Worldwide Holdings.

Following a public outcry and multiple legal challenges, Sri Lanka’s highest court ordered a return to the local provider.

Tourism Resurgence

Tourism, a vital revenue stream for Sri Lanka, has seen a resurgence in 2024. Between January 1 and August 19, the country welcomed over 1.3 million tourists, with India, the UK and Russia being the top source markets.

Earnings from tourism in the first half of 2024 soared to over $1.5 billion, a 78% increase year-on-year, highlighting the sector’s rapid recovery. This is particularly significant given the political and economic turmoil that had previously deterred visitors.

Europe continues to be a major influence, accounting for nearly half of all arrivals, while Asia and the Pacific regions have also emerged as key contributors. The increase in visitors from these regions underscores shifting dynamics in Sri Lanka’s tourism landscape.

In 2023, Sri Lanka saw a significant rebound in tourism, welcoming 1.49 million visitors – more than double the 2022 figures, according to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.

Industry Reaction

The travel industry welcomed the visa-free initiative. Sam Clark, CEO of Experience Travel Group, described it as a “game-changing blueprint” for the country’s tourism future. “It’s a huge opportunity for British ministers to negotiate a permanent visa-free arrangement,” Clark said.

From 2018, the British government had warned tourists from visiting the Asian country saying “food, medicine and medical services” may be limited by political unrest. This has had an impact on tourism to Sri Lanka, with bookings still well below 2018 figures.

Krishna Rathi, senior country director at Agoda, noted that easing travel restrictions typically leads to increased interest in a destination, as seen in other countries that have introduced similar measures.

“We saw an increase in Agoda’s search data when Thailand and Malaysia introduced visa waivers for Indian tourists, and the same effect occurred more recently when India removed tourist visa fees for Thai travellers. We’ll be sure to keep a close watch on how this impacts visitors to Sri Lanka,” Rathi said.

The Russia Angle

The visa-free program, while temporary, could serve as a catalyst for further growth, particularly from markets like Russia, where arrivals have been bolstered by direct flights.

However, the momentum has shown signs of slowing since May 2024, prompting calls for targeted measures to sustain and grow this important market. Industry experts suggest that reducing the financial burden on travelers could be key to attracting more Russian tourists. Proposed measures include exempting embarkation fees and landing and parking costs for flights, particularly at Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, which has been effective in the past.

Additionally, allowing transactions in native currencies could further ease the travel process and enhance Sri Lanka’s appeal to Russian visitors.

Tourism on a tear as July income at US$ 328mn

Sri Lanka has earned a robust income of US$ 328.3 million from the tourism trade in July at a level nearly equal to what the country gets from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for six months for raising taxes of its people and corporations and perhaps on their properties and capital gains, which will most likely continue under any new President favoured to win the upcoming election.

Sri Lanka’s economy and more specifically its external sector was buttressed by the strong inflows that came from tourism and remittances among others until the Easter attacks slowed it down before the pandemic decimated it as the border closures by countries due to the fear of further spread of the Corona virus brought the travel and tourism industry to a near halt.

Arrivals reached the pre-pandemic levels early this year, helping the country to earn more money while lifting some local industries which were mostly driven by the foreign visitors.

July earnings were more than twice of what the country received in June (US$ 151.1 million). This was because the country in July entered into the next season for arrivals after a slow arrivals season in the prior three months.  

In July, Sri Lanka saw 187, 810 tourists coming in, well above the 113,470 June figure.

So far in August in the first 19 days of the month, 117, 825 visited the country, bringing the total arrivals in the year upto  August 19 to 1,315,884. By the end of August, Sri Lanka will end up slightly below the 1,487,303 tourists figure it welcomed in the whole of 2023.

Sri Lanka aims roughly around 2.4 million arrivals by the end of the year, but could end up slightly below that level. Meanwhile, earnings from tourism in the first seven months were US$ 1,884.9 million, up by a robust 72.3 percent from the same period last year.

Sri Lanka aims to collect between US$ 3.5 to US$ 4.0 billion in earnings for the year.

I am always curious to know how they measure this income, stayed in 3 four star plus hotels in the south and all their mgmt claimed that most of the tourists staying come under travel packages paying avg 30$/night to overseas travel companies and dont even order any extras, some of the staff even mentioned that these tourists walk over to a supermarket and buy their water/snacks/ local beer and bring into the hotel instead of buying from inhouse. so where does this tourist income get registered and monitored?

As of the 27th of July, a total of 123,503 tourist arrivals have been recorded, with three more days to go before the month concludes.

Notably, the highest number of arrivals for the year was previously reported in March, reaching 125,495 tourists. However, July is set to surpass that figure, signaling a promising trend for the country’s tourism industry.

Analyzing the source markets, India leads the way with 20,779 tourist arrivals, followed by the United Kingdom with 15,126 arrivals, China with 8,446 arrivals, Germany with 6,842 arrivals, and Russia with 6,374 arrivals, forming the top five countries contributing to the July 2023 influx of visitors.

Other nations, including France, the Maldives, the Netherlands, Canada, and Australia, have also contributed to the robust number of tourist arrivals for the month.

Cumulatively, Sri Lanka has welcomed a total of 748,377 tourists in 2023, showcasing a notable increase from the 719,978 tourist arrivals recorded in the previous year of 2022. This growth reflects the country’s continuous efforts in promoting its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and tourist attractions to a global audience.

Sri Lanka to offer free 30-day tourist visas to select countries

Beginning October 1, Sri Lanka will offer free 30-day tourist visas to citizens from 35 nations, including the U.S. The six-month pilot program aims to boost tourism , a central part of the country’s economy. The policy waives the typical $50 fee and occurs during the island’s peak travel period, from December through mid-April.

Tourism rebounds in Sri Lanka

From the beginning of 2024 through August 19, Sri Lanka brought in 1.3 million tourists. Tourism revenue topped $1.5 billion from January through June, marking a 78% increase year over year. The country hopes to build on that success and end the year with $4 billion in revenue and 2.5 million visitors. The new visa program and the country’s “You’ll Come Back for More” global tourism marketing campaign look to keep the momentum going. 

During COVID-19 and a 2022 financial crisis, Sri Lanka saw its tourism figures tumble, and the resurgence is welcome news for the country’s economy. 2023 began the turnaround, and the positive energy continued into 2024. According to the Sri Lanka Development Authority, India brings in the most visitors, at 246,922, and with the UK next at 123,992. 

Cabinet spokesman and Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardana said: “The aim of the government is to transform Sri Lanka into a free visa country, much like Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam to tap into the benefits of a rapidly growing tourism industry.”

Sri lanka scraps tourist visa fees for 2024/25 winter season.

Sri Lanka will remove the need for UK tourists to obtain a $50 (£38) visa during the upcoming winter season in a bid to boost tourist numbers.

Visa-free access for single visits of up to 30 days will come into force on 1 October for six months.

The initiative applies to 35 countries as the island attempts to rebuild its tourism industry following recent political upheaval, the pandemic and the 2019 Easter terror attacks.

However, the list of exempt countries does not appear to include Ireland.    Sam Clark, chief executive of Sri Lanka specialist Experience Travel Group, said the decision was “great news” for the country.

"The new visa-free regime is a game-changing blueprint for the Sri Lanka’s future,” he said.

“It offers travellers [from] around the world a great chance to see all the country has to offer, and it’s a huge opportunity for British ministers to negotiate a permanent visa-free arrangement.”

He added: “Sri Lanka is not just a safe country. It is a jewel in South Asia’s crown and our government should do everything it can to help British people visit.”

The UK is Sri Lanka’s third-largest tourism source market, with 61,000 Britons visiting last year.

The decision is a further boost to the island after the industry lobbied the Foreign Office to change its travel advice for the country earlier this year.

From 2018 until spring this year, the UK government had warned tourists about visiting, saying "food, medicine and medical services" may be limited by political unrest.

Is the FCDO’s approach to travel advice still fit-for-purpose?

Clark said this had had "a profound impact on tourism to Sri Lanka, with bookings still well below 2018 figures".

Following a campaign backed by celebrities, politicians and business leaders,  the FCDO changed its advice for Sri Lanka in April .

’We’re still short-changing the people of Sri Lanka’

Operators expect the waiving of the fee and visa process will immediately increase Sri Lanka’s appeal.

ETG said previous experience in Vietnam showed visa-free travel boosted visitor numbers by a third within two weeks of adoption.

Sri Lanka Ministry of Tourism supports new SiGMA show

Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Tourism has thrown its support behind a new SiGMA’s new South Asia show set to make its debut in 2025.

The event will take place between November 30 and December 2 in Colombo.

SiGMA said the growth of mobile gaming, especially in India, is “promising,” citing industry projections that the country is set to lead with 269 million mobile gamers by 2027.

What’s more, the event organisers said the opening of Sri Lanka’s first integrated resort in 2025 – City of Dreams Sri Lanka , which Melco Resorts is set to have a US$125m role in developing – is also a key growth point for South Asia.

In a formal letter, Thisum Jayasuriya, chairman of the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SCLB), endorsed SiGMA South Asia.

“The SLCB is in the view that SiGMA South Asia 2025 would be an extremely important event to Sri Lanka,” Jayasuriya said.

“The Sri Lanka Convention Bureau endorses the proposal to host the SiGMA South Asia Summit 2025 in Sri Lanka and pledge our fullest support to SiGMA South Asia to host the conferences in Sri Lanka.”

SiGMA South Asia is expected to welcome 5,000 delegates, with over 150 industry authorities including government officials, regulators and representatives, lined up to speak at the event.

Over 800 affiliates and an expo floor featuring South Asia’s top 10 companies will further complement SiGMA South Asia, the company said.

SiGMA’s Affiliate World expo in South Asia will take place shortly after SiGMA South Asia.

“The dates for the SiGMA South Asia and the Affiliate World events are perfectly aligned, allowing delegates to maximise their experience in South Asia,” SiGMA said.

“Starting with SiGMA in Colombo on Monday, December 1, and Tuesday, December 2nd, operators or studios seeking traffic can then easily and quickly fly to Bangkok, Thailand, on Wednesday, December 3, just in time for the first day of Affiliate World on Thursday, December 4.

“This schedule offers a unique opportunity to attend both leading industry events in one streamlined trip.”
