Has Royal Caribbean Canceled Calls on Labadee, Haiti? Here’s What the Cruise Line Says

In recent days, major violence has rocked the Caribbean nation of Haiti . In the midst of unrest between armed gangs and the government, the gangs have stormed prisons in the capital of Port-au-Prince, gunfights have erupted in the streets, major airlines have halted flights to/from of the country, and thousands of Haitians have been displaced.

is labadee haiti open to cruise ships

As a result, the government has declared a state of emergency through at least April 3 in the area of the country where Port-au-Prince is located. One leader of the gangs fighting government forces — Jimmy Cherizier – has threatened that there will be “a civil war that will end in genocide” if the current prime minister does not resign.

While there are numerous news sources covering the spiraling situation, we wondered what might happen with Royal Caribbean’s private destination on the island, Labadee . As the only cruise port in Haiti, it’s seeing a unique situation.

This spot sits secluded on a peninsula in the northern part of the country, near the city of Cap-Haitien. It’s a popular port of call on Royal Caribbean trips, complete with a massive beach, rides, shopping, and more. Given everything that’s happening, we reached out to the cruise line to get the latest on if ports of call will continue .

No Labadee Cancelations as of Now

is labadee haiti open to cruise ships

As of now, Royal Caribbean says they “have not canceled any calls or sailings” that visit the Labadee port.

In a statement to Cruzely, a representative told us that:

“The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority. Our global security teams are closely monitoring the situation in the area. At all times, we remind guests to remain aware of their surroundings while ashore and follow all State Department guidelines. Should any changes be required, guests will be notified directly.”

More specifically, the cruise line emphasized several points regarding Labadee and the current situation in the capital:

  • We are aware of the recent travel advisory for Haiti.
  • The safety and security of our guests is our top priority.
  • Please note that the civil unrest in Port-au-Prince is 128 miles south of our private destination, Labadee.
  • This is equivalent to a six-and-a-half-hour drive time from Port-au-Prince to Labadee.
  • Only guests and employees are permitted onsite, and we have private security to limit access to the area.
  • Guests visiting Labadee are not permitted to leave the resort at any time, for their safety and comfort.
  • In the meantime, we’re continuing to monitor the situation very closely with local authorities and our security team.
  • Should anything change regarding our visits to Labadee, we’ll contact any impacted guests and travel agents immediately.
  • We have not canceled any calls or sailings visiting Labadee at this time.

If Changes Do Occur, Royal Caribbean Will Be in Touch

To be sure, the current situation in the capital is dire and shows no signs of stopping yet. While the cruise line hasn’t made any changes as of now, should the violence spread, then we think canceling calls on the port will be in the cards.

As for now, there are ships scheduled for the port nearly every day through the rest of the month. If you are on an upcoming trip that features a stop in Labadee, then be prepared for the possibility of a change. The cruise line will be in touch to alert you of any itinerary adjustments.

We are scheduled for a stop next Month. I would suggest not stopping in Haiti and changing to a Cocoa Cay stop.

I also emailed because my parents are leaving next week to celebrate my mom’s 80th birthday on Royal Caribbean and received the same response. They have to take into consideration that there are thousands of prisoners on the run in Haiti. “ON THE RUN” they could go anywhere on the island and hide in remote sections including Labadee. If I was Royal Caribbean or any other cruise, I would not be near Haiti until it is safe to visit. It’s too risky and they can do anything at this time out of desperation. Hoping they change their minds.

I’m pretty sure “state guidelines” recommend not visiting Haiti. I called as well and got the same “read off per verbatim” response. If the safety of guests were top priority they wouldn’t be risking guest safety by stopping. You could have the same “6 hour away” response in some countries in the Middle East but they skipping this area right now. Does anyone know how far a boat ride it is from Port-au-Prince to Labadee? Seems like someone could get in from that avenue to me.

Royal Caribbean announced suspensions of planned stops to Labadee, the cruise line’s private resort on Haiti’s northern shore, in the wake of continued violence and lawlessness in the island nation.

The announcement on Thursday came a day after Royal Caribbean said it would continue stopping at its private resort while “monitoring” for safety threats.

“The safety and security of our guests, crew, and communities we visit are our top priority. Our Global Security and Intel Team is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we are temporarily making adjustments to sailings visiting Labadee,” the cruise line announced.

So far, the suspension is in effect until March 22, the cruise line said. Plans beyond that date will be announced as decisions are made.

“We will continue to monitor and reassess calls as needed, and will communicate updates with guests directly,” the statement said.

The U.S. State Department has maintained a “Do Not Travel” advisory for Haiti since July 27, 2023, due to kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and poor health care infrastructure. “Kidnapping is widespread and victims regularly include U.S. citizens,” the alert states.

The situation took a turn for the worse in early March as gangs attacked government buildings and the National Penitentiary, releasing an estimated 4,000 inmates. This week, Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced his resignation.

Labadee is an enclosed resort, built on a peninsula accessible only to Royal Caribbean guests and employees, that the cruise line has leased since the 1980s. The 260-acre property is located about 130 miles north of Port-au-Prince, where most of the violence is taking place. Travel by car from the capital to the resort takes six to eight hours.

The resort features a roller coaster, fishing and jet-ski areas, cabanas and beach access. Private security protects cruise ship customers when Royal Caribbean’s ships stop there.

Itineraries of six ships that sail from Florida ports will be affected by the suspension, which is scheduled to last through March 22.

Symphony of the Seas , departing Port Everglades on March 18. Labadee stop replaced by a sea day. Falmouth, Jamaica call time adjusted to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Explorer of the Seas , departing Port Miami on March 17. Labadee stop replaced by Perfect Day at Coco Cay with a call time of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Oasis of the Seas , departing Port Miami on March 17. Labadee stop replaced by Falmouth, Jamaica, with a call time of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Grandeur of the Seas , departing Port Miami on March 18. Labadee stop replaced by Perfect Day at CocoCay with a call time of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Adventure of the Seas , departing Port Canaveral on March 15. Labadee stop replaced by Grand Turk with a call time of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mariner of the Seas , departing Port Canaveral on March 16. Labadee stop replaced by Nassau, Bahamas with a call time of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This is not the first time Royal Caribbean has suspended stops to Labadee because of unrest in Haiti.

In 2016, the cruise line canceled three stops  after encountering local residents in small boats staging a protest.

Labadee resort reopens after two years with cruise ship’s arrival

Avatar photo

CAP-HAITIEN – Labadee, the Royal Caribbean-owned beach resort off Haiti’s northwestern coast popular with cruise lovers, is once again open after being shuttered nearly two years ago, government officials said.

“Welcome back to Labadee, Haiti to almost 3,000 tourists with Harmony of the Seas,” Bocchit Edmond, Haiti’s Ambassador to the U.S. tweeted on Jan. 27.

Labadee had closed in March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thursday, the 18-deck ship welcomed 2,896 passengers on board on its return day, with a staff of 1,979 members.

Through its Labadee Resort, located in the port town called Labadie , Royal Caribbean promotes a “paradise found” experience complete with boat and coaster rides, relaxation spots with sweeping vistas and local cuisine.

Depending on the ship, location and time of year, prices range from $220 per person to upwards of $2,000 per person, according to the company’s site. When a ship docks at Labadie, guests are ferried to the Labadee Resort for excursions for a day, then return to the ship to continue on their island-hopping sojourn.

Royal Caribbean has been operating cruises to its Haitian resort since 1986. It has said the resort provides about 300 jobs to locals and welcomes 200 more people to sell items for a fee.

Royal Caribbean Replacing Labadee Calls Due to Unrest in Haiti

Picture of Bruce Parkinson

Bruce Parkinson

  • August 12, 2021

With a new ‘Do Not Travel’ advisory issued by the State Department, it appears that Royal Caribbean is temporarily suspending visits to its private destination Labadee in Haiti.

Guests on the October 10 sailing of Allure of the Seas have been informed that Labadee has been removed from the itinerary “due to the unrest in Haiti.” Cruise Radio has reached out to Royal Caribbean for more information and will update this story when a response is received.

The State Department warning is Level 4, the highest category. It states: “ Do not travel to Haiti due to kidnapping, crime, and civil unrest.”

The warning continues: “ Kidnapping is widespread, and victims regularly include US citizens. Kidnapping cases often involve ransom negotiations, and US citizen victims have been physically harmed during kidnappings.”

Sharing the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, Haiti is the western hemisphere’s poorest nation. From natural disasters to near-constant political turmoil and frequent violent crime, the country is often in the headlines.

The July 7 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in the capital city of Port-au-Prince made an already bad situation worse.

Located on a peninsula on the north coast of the country, Labadee is a private resort leased by Royal Caribbean International through 2050. The site is fenced off from the surrounding area, and passengers are not allowed to leave the property. Security is provided by a private company.

Several Royal Caribbean International ships are due to visit Labadee in the coming months, including Mariner of the Seas, Grandeur of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas,  and Jewel of the Seas .

Celebrity Cruises, another Royal Caribbean Group brand, also regularly makes stops at the private destination.

Royal Caribbean describes the Labadee experience as follows:

“There’s nowhere quite like Labadee — where you can chase an adrenaline rush on an alpine coaster one minute and do some sun soaking the next. All right in the middle of rolling jungles and sparkling beaches.”

oasis of the seas labadee haiti

Guests booked on the October 10 Allure of the Seas sailing received the following message:

“ To maintain your safety and wellbeing, we’ve replaced our visit to Labadee due to the unrest in Haiti. Instead, we’ll visit Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico and unfortunately, we won’t make our visit to Falmouth, Jamaica. As a result of these changes, we’ve moved up our sea day, and we’ll visit Nassau, Bahamas, towards the end of our itinerary.”

The current unrest, coupled with high levels of COVID-19 infections, has brought Haiti’s very limited tourism industry to a grinding halt, even as the neighboring Dominican Republic ramps up again after a long pandemic slowdown.

In a July 14 article , Stéphane Doyon, Haiti program manager for Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders), described the nightmarish conditions currently facing Haitian citizens.

“To describe everyday life, you have to borrow from the vocabulary of war. The capital, Port-au-Prince, is divided by several front lines. Entire neighborhoods are under the control of armed groups with shifting territories,” Doyon wrote.

“ In dense and impoverished areas, the streets are barricaded, and in some areas, there are snipers shooting on sight. Clashes between gangs have forced thousands of residents to leave some neighbourhoods.”

Despite Haiti’s manifold issues, Labadee has been a popular Royal Caribbean destination since 1986. A per-passenger fee is welcomed by the impoverished nation’s government, and several hundred Haitians are employed at the resort or earn money selling crafts and souvenirs at an onsite market.

Popular cruise line cancels more stops to this popular Caribbean destination

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line has canceled more stops to the line’s private beach in Haiti, citing safety concerns.

According to RoyalCaribbeanblog.com , the website that tracks the cruise line, guests who are booked on cruises in the summer and early fall are getting notifications from Royal Caribbean that their visits to Labadee have been canceled.

This comes after the cancellations implemented in March were set to last through the end of May 2024 due to the ongoing turmoil in Haiti. Now the line has been forced to cancel more cruises through September 2024.

The Labadee drop from itineraries was replaced with visits to other destinations.

“Due to the continuing situation in Haiti, we’ll now visit Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos, instead of Labadee, Haiti,” the statement said in an email to booked passengers of [the ship] Adventure of the Seas, for example.

“We’re sorry for the change - your safety is our top priority.”

In addition to Adventure of the Seas, the cancellations affect multiple other Royal Caribbean ships as well, including Independence of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, and Symphony of the Seas.

Guests who were scheduled to visit the dropped destination have expressed their disappointment on the RoyalCaribbeanBlog message boards.

“For the folks looking forward to Labadee, for the folks in Labadee, and for Royal, I am sorry this has been so tough,” one user named Wayno wrote.

“Understandable but sad as I was pumped to visit both private destinations in a single sailing,” another user named tntornadox wrote on another message board.

As previously reported , Royal Caribbean first announced back in March that its cruise liners won’t be stopping at its private beach for the time being “out of an abundance of caution” as the country struggles with rampant gang violence and political turmoil.

“Due to the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we’re temporarily suspending our visits to Labadee for our entire fleet,” Assistant Vice President Aurora Yera-Rodriguez said in a statement . “We continue to monitor and assess the situation with our Global Security & Intelligence Team.”

Labadee Haiti cruise port

Port Labadee Haiti cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Labadee Haiti, Royal Caribbean private island. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Labadee is an exclusive (privately-owned) Caribbean island port and resort destination located on Haiti's northern coast. This "private island" (area sized 260 acres/105 hectares) is leased until 2050 to the company RCCL-Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (now RCG-Royal Caribbean Group). Since 1986, RCCL has contributed the biggest proportion of tourist revenue to Haiti, employing 300 locals, allowing another 200 to sell wares on the premises for a fee, and also paying the government of Haiti USD 12 per ship tourist.

As an exclusive destination, at Labadee can dock and disembark passengers/crew only liners from the fleets of RCI-Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises . The first liner that visited Labadee since the COVID crisis started (March 2020) was Harmony OTS - on January 27, 2022.

The resort is entirely tourism-oriented and guarded by a private security force. Cruisers are not allowed to leave the property - the site is fenced off from the surrounding area and food available to travelers is brought from the ships. Controlled Haitian merchants are given the sole rights to sell merchandise and establish businesses in the resort. Though sometimes described in advertisements as an island, Labadee is actually a peninsula contiguous with Hispaniola Island. The cruise ships moor to the pier at Labadee which was completed in late 2009 and is capable of servicing Oasis-class ships.

Labadee attractions include beaches, watersports, a water-oriented playground, an alpine coaster, a zip line, and a Haitian flea market.

Royal Caribbean ships arrive in Labadee at ~8 am. Disembarkation is after breakfast on the ship. Lunch is Labadee BBQ (including veggie burgers) starting at 11 am. Dining options also include salads, fast food (burgers, hot dogs), chicken, fresh-made food.

Purchases can be made via SeaPass (boarding cards), except craft markets selling locally-made merchandise for cash. Shopping on Labadee is available at Artisan Market (fixed prices store for handmade goods) and Artisan Village (outdoor market with negotiable prices). Both are cash-only shopping options.

  • Labadee's most popular attraction is the zip-line Dragon's Breath Flight Line. It starts from the mountain-top launch platform and allows speeds up to 50 mph (80 kph). Nature trails are also among the most common activities, along with parasailing, jet skiing, deep-sea fishing, alpine coaster riding, DreamWorks Safari. All these shore excursions can be booked prior the voyage (via RCI's Cruise Planner).
  • Renting private cabanas or beach bungalows is also very popular among tourists. These beachside accommodations provide privacy and can be booked either online (before the voyage, via RCI's Cruise Planner) or while on the ship. Beach beds and loungers are the other local rental options.
  • Columbus Cove Beach is the least crowded. Due to the large walking distance from the docking pier, tourists often use the quick and complimentary ferry ride to Columbus Cove.
  • Barefoot Beach is an exclusive beach (reserved for Grand Suite and above cruise ship passengers) served by its own lunch buffet restaurant.
  • At Adrenaline Beach there is a swim-up bar.
  • Adventure Ocean Oasis (at Adrenaline Beach) is a kids splash area equipped with water toys, fountains and geysers. The facility is part of RCI's onboard kids program "Adventure Ocean" for supervised children's activities. Other kids' playgrounds are the Arawak Aqua Park (at Columbus Cove, with water slides, floating trampolines and pyramids) and Dragon's Splash Waterslide (Columbus Cove, featuring a 300 ft / 90 m long water slide ending into a splash zone.

Just like shipboard, Royal Caribbean beverage packages  are all valid on Labadee too.

For touring Labadee, RCI provides complimentary shuttles all along the resort island. Tram stops are clearly marked.

In 2017 (August through October), Royal Caribbean made enhancements to Labadee's Adrenaline Beach. Works started on August 14 and included adding new reef balls to restore ailing coral reefs and create new scuba diving and snorkeling paths for cruise ship tourists. There were no works during all scheduled ship visits to the island. During the Adrenaline Beach redevelopment were also added cabanas.

Curiously, on Labadee there is a crew-only beach (located south of Columbus Cove Beach). Named "Belly Beach", it can be accessed only by boat (leaving from the jet-ski landing) and is exclusive to cruise ship crew members. Belly Beach is private (not owned by Royal Caribbean) so food and beverages there cost extra and are provided from an a la carte-priced menu at an open-air restaurant.

Barefoot Beach cabanas

Barefoot Beach on Labadee is an RCCL private beach property with exclusive access for Suite passengers and Pinnacle members of the company's "Crown & Anchor Society" loyalty program.

The beach offers a variety of private cabanas available for rent (at additional cost, on a first-come-first-served basis). These cabanas can be reserved via the ship's Concierge or the onboard Shore Excursions desk.

Follows the list of cabanas as types and rental prices (per cabana) at the Barefoot Beach: Standard (USD 295), Beachfront and Hilltop (USD 395), Over Water (USD 495). Reservations are full-day.

Each cabana has max capacity 6 people, 2 lounge chairs, a large indoor seating area. The list of price-inclusive amenities includes assigned attendant, complimentary amenities (towels, bottled water in cooler, snorkeling gear, 2 floating mats, hammocks, golf cart), private BBQ buffet exclusive access.

  • Standard cabanas are also wheelchair accessible (with 2 steps only).
  • Hilltop cabanas are the most private, featuring great panoramic views from above.
  • Over Water cabanas have direct access to the sea and the beach.
  • Beachfront cabanas are on the waterfront.

Nellie's Beach cabanas

Nellie's Beach is another RCCL private beach property with free access for all cabin types of passengers. The beach offers a variety of private cabanas available for rent (at additional cost, on a first-come-first-served basis).

These cabanas can be reserved via Cruise Planner (at RCI's website) and are 2 types - "Beach" and "Over-Water". Rent prices are USD 395 (Beach Cabana) and USD 495 (Over Water Cabana). Over-Water cabanas are built on rock groupings and have walkways down to the sea.

All rental details and price-included amenities are the same as for the suite-only Barefoot Beach.

At Columbus Beach, there are new bungalows (similar to the cabanas). Bungalow's rental price is USD 225 per day.

Labadee Haiti cruise terminal

Labadee is most popular with its beaches and active fun. Among the most popular attractions and activities are:

  • Dragon's Breath Zip-Line is the longest built over water - length 2600 ft (792 m), 500 ft (152 m) above the beach, zip-lining speed is 40-50 mph (65-80 kph).
  • Arawak Aqua Park - among its best features are floating trampolines, inflatable pyramids, water slides, kids splash areas.

  • USD prices -  139 (adult / c hild), complimentary for infants
  • What to Bring -  SeaPass card, c ash / credit cards
  • What to Wear - h at, sunglasses, c losed-toe shoes, long shorts / trousers

Travel alert: Royal Caribbean cancels cruises to this island

Royal Caribbean Cruises has canceled more stops at a popular private resort in Haiti due to safety issues.

Guests who booked on cruises in the summer and early fall are receiving notifications from Royal Caribbean that their cruises to Labadee, a private resort on the northern coast of Haiti, have been canceled, according to royalcaribbeanblog.com , a website that reports on the cruise line.

After Royal Caribbean started to cancel trips to Haiti in March due to civil unrest in Haiti, the cruise line started to cancel more cruises into September, royalcaribbeanblog.com reported. The Royal Caribbean had previously canceled visits to Labadee through the end of this May.

The private resort stop has since been replaced with another port or a day at sea, the royalcaribbeanblog.com reported. The cancellations affect ships such as Adventure of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas.

The Royal Caribbean announced in March that it was suspending all calls to Labadee, according to cruiseindustrynews.com . The move came after the U.S. State Department announced a travel alert for people to not visit the country.

“The current security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous,” the U.S. State Department wrote in a press release in March. “We are aware that there are few or no commercial options to depart Haiti safely at this time. As they become available, we urge U.S. citizens to take advantage of them.”

Labadee (Haiti) Royal Caribbean Cruise Port Guide and Review (2023)

Panoramic photo of the pier and entrance to the Labadee cruise port

Essential guide to the cruise port in Labadee (Royal Caribbean's private resort in Haiti): where ships dock, the terminal, how to get around, best things to do, how to explore on your own and shore excursions, beaches, cabanas, shopping, lunch, and all must-know.

By: Editor-in-Chief Updated: May 30, 2023

Unlike what you may read in less accurate reviews, Labadee is not an island. The cruise port of Labadee is in an enclosed peninsula in Haiti with a vast area that is, in reality, a gatted resort for the exclusive privilege of passengers of Royal Caribbean.

Cruise passengers are not allowed outside the gated area and cannot access Haiti. Not even on shore excursions.

Labadee is a regularly visited port of call on Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries during the Fall-Winter season. Most cruises calling at Labadee depart from Miami or Orlando, visiting one or two other ports like CocoCay, Nassau, Key West, Falmouth, or Grand Cayman. Some 8-night cruises will call at ports like San Juan, St Maarten, and Antigua. In 2019, there were over 160 cruise ship calls at Labadee, with 720,000 passengers visiting the resort.

Where is Labadee and the cruise port

Labadee is on the north coast of Haiti, 32 miles (51.3 km) west of the Dominican Republic. The closest cruise port to Labadee is Grand Turk, around 134 miles (215 km) to the north. However, the Grand Turk cruise terminal is a Carnival Corporation development, and Royal Caribbean cruise ships do not include it in their itineraries. Labadee is 657 miles (1,057 km) southeast of Miami.

The cruise port in Labadee has a 0.25-mile (400 meters) pier extending south into the ocean. More precisely, into Buccaneer's Bay. It has one berth where extra-large ships like Royal Caribbean's Oasis class can dock. At the end of the pier, cruise passengers enter the main gate to the property. You will not find land transportation between the ship gangway and the entrance of the 260-acre private resort.

Cruise terminal services and amenities

There isn't a cruise terminal building as such in Labadee. However, passengers will find all services and amenities near the resort's entrance.

On the right side, in an area known as Buccaneer's Bay, you will find a Trading Post with all sorts of beachwear (t-shirts, sunglasses, hats, and so on) for those that forgot something onboard or at home. And there are also two large desks to book tours and get information for activities such as:

  • Parasailing
  • Deep-sea fishing
  • Speed boat adventure

Behind the shore excursions counters is the meeting point for these activities and also lockers to leave your stuff whilst on tour. Walking 300 feet straight into the resort, your will also find the following:

  • Dragon’s Tram Station
  • Information Center and Meeting Point
  • Dragon’s Café
  • Beach wheelchairs

How to get around in Labadee

Although there isn't a shuttle bus in Labadee, most cruise travelers walk the gangway into the pier, not realizing there are a few very convenient ways to explore the resort. Some cruisers may not realize how easy it is to walk around and how Labadee is very accessibility friendly.

Columbus Cove Express the tender boat

A tender boat specially designed by Royal Caribbean docks right by the gangway. This double-decker type of water taxi takes passengers to Columbus Cove, the farthest beach in Labadee. Named Columbus Cove Express, the tender boat service is free and takes a few minutes to sail ½ a mile (800 meters) to Columbus Cove.

There is also a free tram running continuously between the Dragon Tram Station (by the entrance of the resort) and the Columbus Cove Tram Station on the East side of the property. There are a couple of stops along the way: the Barefoot Tram Station and the Town Square Tram Station. Using the Columbus Cove Express to get to the farthest beach and returning with the tram is a great way of exploring Labadee.

Because Labadee is just over ½ mile (800 meters) long and no more than ⅓ mile (400 meters) wide, walking is a comfortable way to get to all and every attraction of Labadee. All paths and trails are paved. There are many shaded places to rest, and there is excellent signage along the way. Paths are well-marked, color colored, and divided into leisure (green), moderate (amber), and strenuous (red).

Acessibility: wheelchairs and scooters

Cruisers with mobility difficulties will find beach wheelchairs right by the resort's entrance. And you can easily take wheelchairs to all food and beverage venues, restrooms, beaches, and all tram stops. Passengers traveling with a wheelchair or a scooter will find it easy and comfortable to explore Labadee.

Do not expect gourmet cusine in Labadee. In fact, all food is cooked onboard your cruise ship and transported to these venues. Think more of a barbecue lunch in a tropical setting than a seating down serviced experince. All bars in Labadee serve signature cocktails, virgin drinks and beers. Cruise passengers with beverage packages can also use these in Labadee.

Complimentary lunch

Lunch in Labadee is served in three venues well placed along the resort.

  • Dragon’s Café. Complimentary buffet lunch close to the pier entrance.
  • Café Labadee. Complimentary buffet lunch on Adrenaline beach.

Bars in Labadee have different names and are in diverse settings. All are very similar except for the Floating Bar on Adrenaline beach.

  • Floating Bar. Signature bar on Adrenaline beach.
  • Schooner Bar. Bar on Adrenaline beach.
  • Nellie’s Tavern. Bar on Nellie’s beach.
  • Columbus Cove. Bar on Columbus Cove.

There are three main shopping venues with souvenirs, local crafts, and products. The tradings posts sell mainly beachwear (t-shirts, sunglasses, hats, and so on). The Artisan’s Market is a large covered building with the best shopping in Labadee. The Artisan’s Village is a large open-air area with dozens of local artisans selling handicrafts like wooden carvings, paintings, decorative objects, and souvenirs. Purchases have to be paid in US$ cash.

  • Trading Posts: Buccaneer’s Trading Post, Barefoot Trading Post and Columbus Trading Post.
  • Artisan’s Market. Among others here are some of the shops in the market. Harry’s (fine carved statues and tableware). Les Ateliers Toggart (tapestries, exotic fabrics, and wall hangings). Connie’s (handmade pottery, jewelry, and paper maché). Rum of Haiti (world-famous Barbancourt rum and liqueurs). Carlos (hand-decorated skirts, dresses, shorts, and shirts). Gallerie Trois Visages (distinctive art by some of Haiti’s best).
  • Artisan’s Village. It is great fun to see some of the artisans work on their handicrafts. In particular, those carving wood or painting. Be prepared to haggle with the artisans to get a better deal but have in mind the dreadful life most have on the other side of the fence.

Shore excursions and tours

Celebrity Cruises offers as many 19 shore excursions and Royal Caribbean lists 43 cruise excursions .

Because Labadde is an area for the exclusive use of Royal Caribbean cruise ships and its sister brands, private online services and local tour operators do not offer shore excursions in Labadee.

U.S. travel alert: Cruise line extends cancellations of stops to popular Caribbean resort

A major cruise company has announced more cancellations for stops at its private resort in Haiti due to continued unrest and violence.

Royal Caribbean had previously announced a temporary suspension of stops at its resort in Labadee, Haiti. Now, according to a report on RoyalCaribbeanBlog.com , itineraries will be changed through at least mid-April.

“Due to the evolving situation in Haiti, we’ll now visit Perfect Day at CocoCay instead of Labadee, Haiti. We’re terribly sorry for the last-minute change – your safety is our top priority,” Royal Caribbean International’s Assistant Vice President of Guest Experiences wrote in the communication to guests sailing on the April 14 sailing of Explorer of the Seas, the website reported.

Stops at Labadee have been replaced with visits to Perfect Day at CocoCay, another Royal Caribbean-operated resort. Other itineraries have been rerouted to Grand Cayman, Bimini, Grand Turk and St. Maarten.

Royal Caribbean recently announced a temporary stop to calls on Labadee, located on the northern coast of Haiti. The U.S. State Department had previously issued an alert for Haiti, advising people not to visit the country due to the threat of “kidnapping, crime, civil unrest and poor health care infrastructure.” All family members of U.S. government employees and non-emergency personnel have been ordered to leave the country.

The resort in Labadee, first opened by Royal Caribbean in 1986, is located about 130 miles from the Haiti capital Port-au-Prince, the epi-center of gang violence. The U.S. State Department announced last week it had completed its first evacuation of American citizens from Port-au-Prince, transporting 15 people to Santo Domingo, t he capital of the Dominican Republic. Others were later evacuated on a plane chartered by the Florida Department of Emergency Management.

Culture & History of the Labadee Cruise Port

Before it became well known as a beach destination for cruisers, Labadee was stylized as “Labadie”. Royal Caribbean purchased the island with the intent to make it a private, exclusive beach escape for a romantic getaway or fun for the entire family. On a cruise to Haiti, Labadee is a great destination for lounging and water adventures.

Labadee Port Facilities & Location

Is it safe to travel to Haiti right now? What travelers should know

is labadee haiti open to cruise ships

The State Department is urging Americans not to travel to Haiti amid fresh gang violence in the country, which declared a state of emergency last week.

While neither the warnings nor violence are entirely new – Haiti has been a Level 4: Do Not Travel destination in State Department travel advisories since before the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse – a spate of recent high-profile attacks, including an attempt by armed gangs to seize control of the country’s main international airport, has sparked renewed urgency.

“The current security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous,” the U.S. Embassy in Haiti said in a security alert issued Sunday. “We are aware that there are few or no commercial options to depart Haiti safely at this time. As they become available, we urge U.S. citizens to take advantage of them. The U.S. Embassy’s ability to assist U.S. citizens is severely limited.”

The U.S. military stepped in to airlift American personnel “into and out of the Embassy” to augment security, U.S. Southern Command said Sunday in a statement to USA TODAY. The embassy is also coordinating assisted departure flights "through non-commercial means" for U.S. citizens, according to its website .

Helicopter rides from U.S. Embassy Port-au-Prince to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic are available, and the country also "indicated they will allow U.S. citizens to enter" through a land border with a valid passport, according to a State Department advisory . The airport in Cap-Haitien has "limited commercial flight activity" as well, the advisory said.

Are there direct flights to Haiti?

Three U.S. airlines typically operate direct flights to Haiti: American, JetBlue and Spirit. However, all three have temporarily suspended service and issued travel waivers for the Caribbean destination.

◾ American Airlines customers with flights scheduled to, through, or from Port-au-Prince (PAP) through April 1 may modify flights without paying change fees. Changes must be made by April 1 with the same origin and destination cities as the original booking.

◾ JetBlue Airways is waiving change and cancellation fees for travelers with flights scheduled to and from Port-au-Prince through April 15. Changes can be made through April 30.

◾ Spirit Airlines is waiving change fees and fare differences on travel to, from, or through Cap Haitien (CAP) and Port-au-Prince through April 15. Travelers should rebook by April 30. After that, the airline said change fees would still be waived, but fare differences may apply.

Is Royal Caribbean still going to Haiti?

Royal Caribbean and its sister line Celebrity Cruises normally sail to Labadee, Haiti , a private destination roughly six hours away from Port-au-Prince by car. However Royal Caribbean is skipping several previously scheduled stops, in coming days.

The following sailings will not go to Labadee.

  • Adventure of the Seas: 3/15 sailing
  • Mariner of the Seas: 3/16 sailing
  • Explorer of the Seas: 3/17 sailing
  • Oasis of the Seas: 3/17, 3/24, 3/31, 4/7 and 4/14 sailings
  • Symphony of the Seas: 3/17, 3/23, 3/31, 4/6, 4/14, 4/20 and 4/28 sailings
  • Grandeur of the Seas: 3/18 sailing
  • Independence of the Seas: 4/4, 4/8, 4/18 and 4/22 sailings

"The safety and security of our guests, crew, and communities we visit are our top priority," a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in a statement to USA TODAY. "Our Global Security and Intel Team is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we are temporarily making adjustments to sailings visiting Labadee. We will continue to monitor and reassess calls as needed, and will communicate updates with guests directly."

As recently as March 11, the cruise line had not canceled any sailings to Labadee, but was keeping a close on the situation while noting that it had private security in the area, which was closed to the public.

It doesn’t look like any Celebrity cruises are scheduled there until fall.
