20 Trips Every Animal Lover Should Take

animal lovers places to visit

If you're an animal lover to the core, why not seek a vacation that will allow you to discover furry friends in fascinating new places. Animal-centric vacations can involve a lot more than visiting a petting zoo. From a safari in Canada to a cat sanctuary surrounded by Roman ruins, here are 20 trips every animal lover should consider taking in their lifetime.

Bandhavgarh National Park (Madhya Pradesh, India)

Bandhavgarh National Park is a 600-square-mile national park in eastern India that has about 250 different species of birds and 22 different mammals, including barking deer, striped hyenas and sambar, but it's most famously known as having the highest density of tigers in India. In fact, tigers are so easily spotted here that it's said visitors are particularly unlucky if they don't see one. Because summers in India are particularly harsh , it's best to plan your visit between November and March.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary (Kanab, Utah)

If you're a lover of dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs or horses, you'll be in heaven when you visit the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah . The largest sanctuary for companion animals in the United States, you can take hikes with stops in "neighborhoods" with fun names like Old Dogtown and Cat World. For a more rewarding visit, you can also volunteer to help the animals. If you can't make the trek to Utah, Best Friends also has regional locations in Los Angeles, New York City, Atlanta and Houston. It's always a good decision to adopt a rescue animal — and we all know rescue dogs make the best pets .

Churchill (Manitoba, Canada)

There are some animals that you see at the zoo that seem like completely different beasts when observed in their natural habitat, and polar bears are definitely one of those animals. In October and November of every year, the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada, is along the polar bear migration path, so you can literally look out your window and see these majestic creatures ambling by. Stay at the Tundra Lodge , a half-bus, half-hotel that rolls right up to the polar bears. It's best to plan your trip sooner rather than later, though, as you may not be able to see polar bears in their natural habitat for much longer due to climate change .

Elephant Nature Park (Chiang Mai, Thailand)

Since the 1990s, the Elephant Nature Park in the Chiang Mai province of northern Thailand has been a place of refuge for rescued elephants. There are numerous ways to experience this place, from stopping by for a short visit to observe the elephants (as well as the dogs, cats, buffalo, birds and more that live at the sanctuary) to volunteering and caring for the elephants for a week.

Galapagos Islands (Ecuador)

Perhaps one of the most famous animal-centric trips in the world, the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador really are a unique travel experience — you're not likely to see more diverse and fascinating wildlife anywhere else in the world. Here, you can observe Darwin's finches, Galapagos giant tortoises, sea lions, marine iguanas and Galapagos penguins as well as the local flora and ecosystems that helped to inspire Darwin's theory of evolution. If the striking beauty of this place isn't enough for you, consider visiting more of the world's most stunning remote islands .

Great Barrier Reef (Queensland, Australia)

Stretching over 1,250 miles along 900 islands, the Great Barrier Reef is not just one reef, but a group of roughly 3,000 individual reefs. Learn to scuba dive or snorkel to see the bright colors and remarkable activities of roughly 2,000 different kinds of fish, 4,000 mollusk species and 400 different types of coral. Just make sure not to touch anything. Human contact can easily kill the coral and disturb this delicate ecosystem, which is already endangered by rising water temperatures. If that's not quite your speed, you can take an overhead helicopter tour for a bird's eye view. The Great Barrier Reef really needs to be seen to be believed, making it one of the 50 places every traveler should visit before turning 50 .

Kangaroo Sanctuary (Alice Springs, Australia)

Australia offers a lot of unique animal life, but perhaps no creature is more famous Down Under than the kangaroo. To see as many of these hoppy marsupials as possible, head to Alice Springs in the Northern Territory and stop by the Kangaroo Sanctuary. Because 'roos mostly sleep during the day, guided tours start here in the late afternoon. The best way to experience the sanctuary is with a sunset tour, which has not only great views of the kangaroos but also of the beautiful 90-acre property.

Kruger National Park (Northeastern South Africa)

Across the more than 7,500 square miles of South Africa's Kruger National Park, you can see the "Big Five" game animals (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and cape buffalo) as well as impalas, zebra, Greater kudu, giraffes and spotted hyenas. Each season offers different views and animals at Kruger National Park. Visitors in the summer will see newborn animals and lush vegetation, but you'll have an easier time spotting game during the dry winter months.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (Northern Kenya)

No matter what sort of animal experience you are looking for, you can have it at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya. With nine different lodges and houses, each one more luxurious than the last, you'll sleep in style at night while spotting some truly extraordinary animals during the day, including rhinos, Grevy's zebra, elephants, lions and possibly wild exotic dogs. Experiencing a trip like this is something everyone — not just animal lovers — should do in their lifetime .

Parc Safari (Quebec, Canada)

You don't have to go all the way to Africa to go on a world-class safari. Just head to Parc Safari in Quebec, Canada. There are family-friendly experiences all throughout the park, including a 3-mile drive where you can pet and feed ostriches, great kudu, elk and dromedaries. One of the more interesting aspects of Parc Safari is the Feline Tunnel, a glass enclosure you can walk through and see lions from every angle above, beside and below you.

Pig Beach (Exuma Cays, Bahamas)

Perhaps one of the most famously Instagrammable spots in the world, you can swim with real pigs in the Exuma Cays of the Bahamas. No one knows exactly why there are swimming pigs in the Caribbean, but everyone does know they're adorable.

The Raptor Trust (Millington, New Jersey)

If owls, eagles and ravens are your thing, you can't miss The Raptor Trust in Millington, New Jersey. Take a relaxing hike through the walking trails and aviaries, where you'll see about 50 different birds, including bald eagles, turkey vultures, ravens, snowy owls, red-tailed hawks and more.

Like a trip around the world in one day, this expansive zoo boasts polar bears, giraffes, orangutans, penguins, gorillas, koalas and hundreds of other creatures. Travel about an hour away to the zoo's Safari Park where you can take a tour and see rhinos, giraffes, kangaroos and more up close. This Ancient Roman temple is now ruins that are home to over 150 feral cats that you can meet every day from noon to 6 p.m. Most of the cats that live here have special needs, whether they are blind, injured or come from abusive homes. This is also one of Rome's most historic spots; among the ruins is part of the Theatre of Pompey, where Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 B.C.

Volcanoes National Park (Musanze, Rwanda)

The very first national park in Africa, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is a truly remarkable place with 62 square miles of lush rainforest and five volcanoes. Here, you'll spot golden monkeys as well as the critically endangered mountain gorilla, which can only be seen on safari in Rwanda, Congo and Uganda. For $1,500, you can get a gorilla trek permit and see these majestic creatures up close and personal.

Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show (New York, New York)

Madison Square Garden hosts the annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City every February, and this event is a doggone dream. This place truly is a sanctuary for animals, and its lions, tigers, wolves, bears, leopards and more roam freely. Thus, visiting is a wholly unique experience. Wolf Haven International (Tenino, Washington)

Gray wolves, Mexican gray wolves, red wolves and even some wolfdogs call the Wolf Haven International sanctuary in Tenino, Washington, home. Their mission is simple: to rescue and provide sanctuary for displaced, captive-born wolves. Visitors here can expect a 50-minute guided walking tour through the public portion of the wolf sanctuary (a small portion of their total acreage) and see some of the residents.

Woodstock Farm Sanctuary (High Falls, New York)

Fun for the whole family, the Woodstock Farm Sanctuary in upstate New York is home to chickens, cows, ducks, goats, pigs, sheep and more farm animals that have been saved from the factory farming industry. A one-hour tour of this charming estate allows you to meet and greet some of these cuddly creatures. A word of warning, though: Because Woodstock Farm Sanctuary promotes veganism, they don't tiptoe around where meat comes from, so be sure your kids are willing to hear some hard truths.

Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming/Montana/Idaho)

Yellowstone National Park may be best known for Old Faithful, but the animals you'll see here are just as remarkable. You can spot black bears, bison, bobcats, bighorn sheep, elk, moose, mountain lions and more in their natural habitats. Helping Baby Elephants in Kenya

" Reteti Elephant Sancutary is my children's favorite place on earth. This center is dedicated to rescuing baby elephants, and visitors can interact with the babies during their daily feedings. However, being the primary animal orphanage in the Northern Rangelands of Kenya, many other species also end up here. During our last visit, my daughter bottle-fed a baby rhinoceros, Loijipu, who was only four weeks old. The center also has a pet gerenuk, Gilby, who goes on walks with you like a dog. You can hand feed the small family of hand-reared giraffes, and you never know if there will be a baby zebra, kudu, or porcupine. This is a nature-sensitive place to interact with African rescue animals of all shapes and sizes." — Teresa Sullivan, Mango Safaris

Spotting Rare Birds and Lizards in New Zealand

"New Zealand is filled with unique creatures, like the prehistoric tuatara, an animal that looks like a lizard and is the closest relative to the dinosaur. Another rare species found here is the kea, the world's only alpine parrot. While the kea is easily seen in alpine areas — and the cheeky bird isn't afraid to say hello — the tuatara is trickier to spot. I suggest going to Southland Museum , where you can meet Henry, a tuatara who is over 110 years old, or spotting them in the wild on Tiritiri Matangi Island." — Corinne Goodman, Down Under Endeavours

Looking for Beluga Whales in the Northwest Passage

"For travelers who want a truly unique wildlife experience, a cruise can be the best option. On a 16-day trip aboard Ponant's Le Commandant Charcot, you'll venture to the Southern Ocean and view emperor penguins. Even more impressive is a 22-day trip to the Northwest Passage on the National Geographic Resolution to see a pod of beluga whales or, if you are particularly fortunate, even a group of narwhals. — Mary Curry, Adventure Life

Researching Manta Rays in the Maldives

"The Marine Life Discovery Center in the Maldives at the Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru is a wonderful place to learn about a variety of marine creatures, like manta rays. You can participate in the marine biologists' research projects and help rebuild reefs — plus, the center runs a rehabilitation program for sea turtles." — Amalia Lazarov, Travelicious

Rhino Conservation in South Africa

"The best new animal experience in 2022 are the two new Marataba Conservation Camps. The activities offered are run by conservationist, vets, and researchers, and they want guests to participate in all the projects. Guest will see wildlife but also get to monitor, track, and collect data. Rhino conservation is at the heart of Marataba, and clients will engage with Dr. Andre Uys, the managing director of Marataba Conservation. I think this is one of the most innovative and exceptional conservation experiences in Southern Africa right now. It is also a plus that the area has gorgeous views of the Waterberg Mountins (the oldest red oxidized sandstone mountains in the world — some people come here just for the geology)." — Elizabeth Gordon, Extraordinary Journeys

Watching Snow Monkeys in Japan

"Seeing the snow monkeys bathing in an onsen in Jigokudani in Nagano Prefecture is a divine experience, as is seeing the cranes on the northern island of Hokkaido." — Scott Gilman, JapanQuest Journeys

Learning From Horses in New Mexico ... or Italy

" Equus in Sante Fe , walkable from the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado , has an incredible equine-assisted transformational coaching program." — Michelle Murré, Azurine Travel

"One of my favorite things to book for clients is an experience with Tuscan Cowboys (Buttero) in the heart of the Tuscan countryside. It's a beautiful way to spend time in one of Italy's most famous regions, but also to learn something new." — Andrea Grisdale, IC Bellagio

Going All Out in the Galápagos

"If you are a photographer, a handful of Galápagos ships offer cruises with some of the best wildlife photographers in the world. You are on intimate luxury ships, some with only 20 guests on board. You'll be side by side with sea lions and blue-footed boobies, learning photography tips and skills that'll turn your ordinary vacation photos into National Geographic-style shots. And best of all, the animals in the Galápagos are known for their lack of fear of humans. You are guaranteed to be just inches away from most of the iconic wildlife in the archipelago." — Allie Almario, Premier Tours

Vacations for Animal Lovers

1. sloths in costa rica.

Sloths are kind of my spirit animal. They’re cute, cuddly, love to sleep a lot, and just hang out. Just one look at a sloth’s adorable face and many people fall in love. Costa Rica is the best place in the world to see a sloth in their natural habitat. But because they are so adept at camouflaging themselves high up in the trees, it might be easier to visit a sloth sanctuary that is on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. Down the road is also a Jaguar sanctuary as well! If you are staying on the Pacific side, don’t worry, you can visit the  Diamante Eco Adventure Park where you’ll be able to see sloths, and many other animals native to Costa Rica, like monkeys, birds, and more close up, or you can even horseback ride through the jungle! So many great animal adventures to have in Costa Rica!

Some of the more famous residents unique to these islands are the Galapagos tortoise with a lifespan of 170 years, the only living Marine Iguana left on earth, Galapagos finches which played a huge role in Darwin’s theory, the Galapagos penguin the smallest and only penguin north of the equator, and much more.

12. Close encounters of the toothy kind in the Bahamas

One of the most popular excursions for animal lovers to do here is swim with the sharks! Many people flock to this area for the chance to swim and even feed sharks while scuba diving. The Bahamas has the largest population of sharks anywhere in the Caribbean. From the Caribbean and blacktip reef sharks to tiger and nurse sharks, there are sharks here for everyone. One of the cutest, most lovable creatures in the world has to be a Panda Bear. Just watch a video of a panda and you will see this silly personality shine through. Although you can see pandas in Zoos around the world, China is the only place to see these animals in the wild. You will be trekking through a huge jungle to try to find them, so it is probably better if you visit them at a breeding center instead where they work around the clock to help bring these wonderful creatures back from the brink of extinction.

14. Hop on over to Australia

Many people know the 2 most popular animals in Australia, the kangaroo and koala. There are a ton of super fun activities to do in many of the great cities, but this blog is about animals. Take a hike in the bush to see many of Australia’s unique animals, many found only there, in their natural habitat.

This is another animal gem right in our backyard. Yellowstone is a must-see for any nature and animal lover. Another location where you can either camp or stay in a hotel, Yellowstone makes for a great vacation for all. But what am I saying, check out any of our amazing national parks to see unique wildlife all over the USA.

16. Wild Horses in Maryland

Did you know there is a beach in Maryland and Virginia that is teaming with wild horses? These wild horses are now used by people since the beach makes for a popular hangout for both people and horses, but they are still wild. Some though may even let you pet them. Horse lovers are animal lovers too! If you’re one of them, you may also visit sites like All About Horses to further educate yourself about horses.

17. Horseback ride through the Irish countryside

Take it from a person who has grown up riding. Riding a horse through the Irish countryside is probably one of the best animal experiences I have had. There is something pretty magical about Ireland, but seeing the country on horseback is pretty spectacular. This is another great location to visit for a unique animal experience, but it still, has plenty to do for those who don’t want to spend their entire vacation with animals.

18. Gorillas in the Mist

While you are on your African safari, take a side trip to Rwanda, Uganda, or Kenya to see Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat. This is a must-do for all animal lovers while in Africa. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a gorilla in these mountains, mainly because their territory is so large, and you have to go on foot. These beautiful and intelligent creatures are endangered, so if these guys are on your bucket list, I would plan your trip soon!

19. Hang out with Japanese Snow Monkeys

You’ve seen these guys hanging out in the hot springs in snowy Kyoto, Japan, which is about a five-hour drive from Tokyo. These characters love to bathe and swim in these pools, and they are so much fun to watch. Again, Japan makes for a great destination for those who want to do other activities as well.

20. Scuba Dive

If you have never been scuba diving or even snorkeling, then you won’t understand when someone says that being 50 feet underwater is as close to being in a different world as possible. Some of my most memorable animal lover encounters happened while scuba diving. The best part about scuba diving is you can pretty much dive anywhere with water, even lakes! There is so much life teeming underneath the waves that will blow you away. From the very small fish, shrimp, and crabs, to the largest turtles, whales, whale sharks, dolphins, and sharks, you will see something new every time you dive. If you happen to go diving during whale watching season, you can hear the whales calling from miles away, it’s a pretty incredible adventure for animal lovers.

Vacations for Animal Lovers - Scuba Dive

Remember, animal lovers, no matter where you go or whatever animals you see, please remember that these are wild animals. They are adapted to life in their area; please don’t handle, feed, or interfere with any animal in the wild. While your intentions may be good, it could negatively impact them. And please, if you want to take a picture with or of an animal, ensure you are at a safe distance.

From tracking polar bears across the Arctic tundra to swimming with sea lions in the Sea of Cortez, the world is full of incredible wildlife adventures to experience. If you’re an animal lover, you won’t want to miss these unforgettable wildlife vacations.

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

animal lovers places to visit

This remote archipelago off the coast of Ecuador just might be the ultimate wildlife vacation destination. You don’t need special photo equipment or giant zoom lenses to get close-up wildlife shots; because there are no natural predators here, the animals are unafraid of people, and you’ll often find yourself within a few yards of sea lions, giant tortoises, waved albatrosses, and iguanas. Keep an eye out for the world’s only tropical penguins.

How to get there: There are a few dozen hotels and inns in the Galapagos, including the cozy Semilla Verde Boutique Hotel on Santa Cruz Island, but to see as many animals as possible you’ll want to hop on a boat. Vessels here can carry no more than 100 passengers by law, and many are much smaller, creating an intimate experience. Popular operators include International Expeditions , Celebrity Cruises , and Metropolitan Touring .

There are few sights more magnificent than a 400-pound Bengal tiger stalking across the grass, muscles rippling under its sleek striped coat. Tigers are most easily spotted in a string of parks across India, including Corbett and Bandhavgarh National Parks. The most appealing, though, may be Ranthambore National Park; once the hunting grounds of Jaipur’s maharajas, the park features not only plenty of tigers but also temple ruins and other wildlife such as leopards and sloth bears.

How to get there: Tiger Safari India offers a variety of tiger-spotting packages ranging from four nights to three weeks. The ultra-luxe Oberoi Vanyavilas is located right outside Ranthambore National Park and can help you arrange excursions.

For many travelers, Antarctica is the wildlife trip of a lifetime. The climate is hostile and the journey to get there is long, but the rewards are many: Picture elephant and fur seals, humpback and orca whales, and thousands of penguins, all set against a backdrop of ice in every possible shade of white and blue. If you have the time and budget, consider booking a trip that includes a stop in South Georgia to see its massive penguin population (including king penguins, which are more difficult to find on the Antarctic Peninsula).

How to get there: Quark Expeditions specializes in polar journeys and even offers fly-in options for travelers who want to skip the notoriously rough Drake Passage between South America and Antarctica. For luxury cabins and food, consider a cruise with Silversea .

Rwanda and Uganda

baby gorilla in rwanda

Imagine crouching in a dense green forest just a few yards away from a mother gorilla cradling her baby or a 400-pound silverback foraging for food. There are only about 880 mountain gorillas left on the planet, and Rwanda and Uganda are the best and safest places to view them. Uganda is a better option for travelers on a budget, as permits and accommodations tend to be cheaper; it’s also easy to add other adventures onto your wildlife trip such as spotting lions and elephants in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Meanwhile, Rwanda has better infrastructure, shorter driving distances, and the chance to see playful golden monkeys.

How to get there: In Rwanda, consider basing yourself at the high-end Virunga Lodge , which boasts lake and volcano views and will arrange treks in search of gorillas and golden monkeys. In Uganda, the recently renovated Bwindi Lodge features butler service for all guests and grounds where gorillas often roam. Both lodges are operated by Volcanoes Safaris , which offers four- to seven-day tour packages in Uganda and Rwanda.

Svalbard, Norway

animal lovers places to visit

Located halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, this cluster of icy islands is one of the few places on the planet where you can see polar bears stalking across the ice in their natural habitat—along with reindeer, Arctic foxes, puffins, walruses, and seals. Most people visit in the summer, when the midnight sun shines all night long.

How to get there: You can base yourself at a hotel such as Funken Lodge , which can arrange wildlife excursions, but the most convenient and far-reaching way to discover Svalbard is on a cruise ship. Quark Expeditions , Lindblad Expeditions , and G Adventures are among the operators that can take you there.

The Pantanal, South America

animal lovers places to visit

Sprawling across parts of Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay, the Pantanal is the planet’s largest system of freshwater wetlands. The Pananal has an even denser concentration of wildlife than the Amazon; visitors can spot jaguars, caimans, macaws, river otters, monkeys, egrets, anteaters, and many more in the region’s broad floodplains.

How to get there: Pantanal Nature runs wildlife tours, including jaguar-focused excursions, in the northern part of the region. Ecolodges such as Araras Pantanal Ecolodge and SouthWild Pantanal Lodge also arrange wildlife trips around the region.

Alaska, U.S.A.

animal lovers places to visit

With bald eagles soaring overhead, humpback whales flashing their flukes in the water, and hungry bears stalking rivers in search of salmon, Alaska offers a feast of wildlife travel adventures. Denali National Park is a good place to spot Alaska’s version of the African Big Five: moose, caribou, Dall sheep, wolves, and grizzly bears. Many visitors come on cruise ships through the Inside Passage, where you can often see marine animals such as sea otters, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, and various types of whales.

How to get there: This list of bear-viewing tours is a good place to start your research if viewing black, grizzly, or polar bears is a must-do for you. Numerous cruise lines offer Alaska voyages, including big-ship lines like Princess and Holland America , and smaller expedition companies like Alaskan Dream Cruises and UnCruise Adventures . For stays in Denali National Park, consider booking a lodge or cabin room at McKinley Creekside Cabins .

Borneo, Southeast Asia

animal lovers places to visit

Covered in old-growth rainforest and split among the nations of Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei, Borneo entices travelers with the chance to spot orangutans swinging through the trees or catch a glimpse of Asia’s smallest elephant. Love monkeys? Don’t miss a trip to Kinabatangan Wildlife Reserve, home to a whopping 10 different primate species including proboscis monkeys, orangutans, and multiple variants of macaques and langurs. Keep an eye out for the elusive Malayan sun bear and its distinctive white or gold patch of chest fur.

How to get there: Intrepid Travel and G Adventures run a number of small-group Borneo tours with various price points and activity levels. If you’d rather travel independently, you can book a multi-night package at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge , located in the Danum Valley Conservation Area; past guests report seeing red leaf monkeys, orangutans, macaques, and various colorful birds around the grounds.

No wildlife lover should pass up a chance to see Africa’s legendary Big Five: lions, rhinos, elephants, leopards, and Cape buffalo. In Tanzania you’ll find them all plus many more, including hippos, giraffes, and zebras. The country is most famous for the Great Migration, when millions of wildebeest move en masse from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in neighboring Kenya; June and July are the best months for viewing the migration in Tanzania.

How to get there: Bright African Safaris is one well-regarded local operator. Nomad Tanzania runs luxurious safari camps across the country. Intrepid Travel offers a number of Tanzania packages, many that also include time in Kenya.

Sea of Cortez, Mexico

animal lovers places to visit

Also known as the Gulf of California, the Sea of Cortez is the body of water between the Baja California peninsula and the mainland of Mexico—and it’s teeming with wildlife. Blue, gray, sperm, fin, and humpback whales migrate through these waters at various times of year, while dolphins and orcas are year-round inhabitants. You can even go swimming alongside playful sea lions and gentle whale sharks.

How to get there: You can base yourself in Los Cabos and take whale watching and snorkeling excursions to see the local wildlife. For a more in-depth look at the region, book a small-ship expedition cruise with operators such as Lindblad Expeditions or UnCruise Adventures .

15 travel destinations for people who are obsessed with animals

Hostelworld Blog | Posted on December 21, 2018 |

For those who love animals, travelling and being able to spend time with them is like a little piece of heaven. There are many destinations in which animals are the main attraction and they attract global travellers who want to see, touch and play with them. But, a huge problem with animal tourism is the exploitation of animals, putting them in stressful situations and even torturing them.

Of course, people who really love animals will want to stay away from these places and only have contact with animals in a natural and non-stressful situation. Want to know the best places for animal lovers, where you can interact ethically and not contribute to their exploitation? Then you’ve come to the right place! Here are the best places for animal lovers.

1. Cats in Japan

The land of Hello Kitty has 13 islands where the population of cats exceeds that of humans. The most famous of these is the Aoshima, which has 6 cats for every island resident and is actually known as the Island of the Cats. Since Aoshima is only accessible by ferry there are a limited number of people who can access it daily.

best places for animal lovers - cats - Japan

Near  Tokyo  , the island of Enoshina has thousands of cats roaming the streets and an abundance of other cultural sights. This island is more accessible than Aoshima. However, regardless of which island you are visiting, it is important to pay attention to the rules: do not force the animals onto your lap and do not feed them outside of the designated feeding grounds. Tourists are generally welcomed by the islanders, who are responsible for caring for the cats – so play nice!

2. Elephant Sanctuaries in Thailand

Elephants are a symbol of the country and it is estimated that 75% of elephants used for tourism (elephant rides, for example) in  Thailand  are taken from their natural habitat precisely for this purpose. A survey by the World Animal Foundation concluded that about 1,300 elephants live in terrible conditions, including deprivation of food and long working hours.

Elephant Jungle Sanctuary  in Chiang Mai

But the dream is not over! It is possible to have contact with elephants in Thailand in a non-exploitative way. To do so, you should look for elephant sanctuaries that work ethically. What does that mean? Well. for a place to be considered ethical, it is necessary for elephants to act as if in their natural habitat, to be free to eat and drink and to live without discomfort or injury. These places should not offer elephant rides or even have entertainment shows as these cause real distress to the gentle giants. Stay away from these places! You have to do your research to make sure that you’re visiting a real sanctuary. Real sanctuaries take in animals that have been abused and mistreated for years and will look after their rehabilitation without whips or chains.

3. Golden Retriever Club of Scotland in Scotland

In 2016 an event for Golden Retriever enthusiasts was launched in Inverness  Scotland. The first event hosted 188 hounds and that number almost doubled in the last 2 years, with  361 dogs in the last event  in July of 2018.

The event takes place annually on the outskirts of the ancestral city of the animals, where the first Golden Retriever was born in the middle of the 19th century. The event is open to people who want to visit, even if they do not bring their own dogs. This year, it is estimated that the festival had a thousand visitors. Dog parades, jokes, dances and dinners are all part of the event – you’d be barking mad to miss it!

4. Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary in NY, USA

In  New York  there is a large shelter for rescued animals. The Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary takes care of about 300 animals. The sanctuary takes care of cows, turkeys, pigs, chickens, ducks, goats and rabbits.

Rescued animals are seen as friends and people can volunteer to help take care of them. The shelter also offers tours with the animals for those who just want to know more about the work done here. You are not allowed to feed them during visits.

5. Whale watching in Sydney, Australia

Some people are fascinated by Sea World ‘s orca, dolphin and whale performances. However, Sea World is not ethical when it comes to looking after their animals. In addition to being kept in captivity in fairly small pools, they are animals that have been removed from their habitat for no reason other than tourism. There are much more ethical ways of observing marine animals. Such as enjoying a natural “show” that whales put on in their natural habitats.

best places for animal lovers - whale watching

Between May and November, humpback whales leave the Antarctic winter for northern Australia to have their babies. In  Sydney  Australia, there are several national parks to observe this migration, with viewpoints overlooking the ocean. It is also possible to book a cruise to see this beautiful process more closely. You can also see whales migrating in  Seattle  US, and  Victoria  and  Vancouver  Canada. In Santa Catarina, in the south of Brazil, it is also possible to observe this phenomenon at times throughout the year.

6. Turtles on the beach in Mexico

In Mexico, thousands of turtles crawl onto the beach to lay their eggs. However, in this process, the hatchlings go through several difficulties that have lead to their near extinction. Dogs walking on the beach eat the eggs and some people even pick them up to sell to uninformed tourists.

In several Mexican beaches, such as Playa Azul and  Acapulco  , it is possible to volunteer to walk the beach and  help turtle  cubs be born and reach the sea safely. In the case of the Playa Azul, a party takes place every October in honour of the turtles.

7. Sacred cows in India

About 80% of India’s population is Hindu, a religion with about one billion believers who consider cows to be sacred. Because of this, it is very common in  India to see cows roaming the cities, being fed and even worshipped publicly. They are prohibited from being in urban areas since 2003, for the risk of being hit by cars and hindering traffic. Even so, it is still possible to see some strolling through the cities.

best places for animal lovers - cow

India has laws in place that have increased the religious status of cattle, meaning that the cow considered purer than those of the higher castes. There are no laws against accidentally harming a cow in India, but the person who does so risks being lynched.

8. Giant pandas in China

Because of the urban sprawl in  China,  giant panda’s habitat areas have been compromised and their way of life has become quite difficult for the species, even endangering their existence. To save them from extinction, China began a breeding process in captivity.

best places for animal lovers - pandas - china

You can visit the giant panda refuges and even volunteer to help care for these animals. The most famous of these is the refuge of Lougantai. Here, tourists can interact directly with the pandas, helping to feed them.

9. Animal blessing ceremony in the Vatican

The Vatican organises a ceremony every year where the Pope or a cardinal bestows blessing on various types of animals brought to the country. Horses, chickens, ducks, goats, dogs, cats and other domestic animals are gathered in the square so that they can be blessed.

However, the date of this event is not fixed. In some years it is held in January, coinciding with the feast of St. Anthony (patron of livestock and domestic animals) and other years it happens on October 4th, World Animal Day.

10. Llamas and alpacas in Peru

Docile and generally friendly animals, you will know if a llama / alpaca doesn’t like you: it will spit in your face. They live in the mountains in  Peru , but you may also find  them in Bolivia and northern Argentina. It is very easy to interact with them, but it is necessary to understand which situations are appropriate to interact with them and when you should leave them alone.

best places for animal lovers - alpaca - machu picchu

You’ll find llamas and alpacas grazing in the parks, roaming amongst ruins and markets freely and also decorated llamas and alpacas for photographs. As we have already mentioned, llamas are very quiet animals and therefore do not need to be drugged to interact with humans, but that does not mean that they like to sit around all day taking pictures with tourists, right? If you wish to interact with these animals, give preference to those who are walking freely. Pay attention to what the animal is doing and if it is open for you to approach it. We must always remember that we are the visitors and that any kind of interaction with animals has to be done with respect, prioritising their well-being and, of course, their safety.

11. Emus National Park, Brazil

This environmental preservation and conservation unit in Goiás has about 500 kilometres of open area and self-guided trails. The park closed in 2017 for a few weeks due to a lack of staff maintenance and cleaning, but it has been up and running since December of the same year.

best places for animal lovers - ostrich - Emus National Park

As the name indicates, it is possible to see several emus in the park but visitors can also see foxes, maned wolves, and various types of birds. Definitely worth a visit for any nature enthusiast.

12. Dolphins in nature reserves in Cancun

Playful, very docile and cuddly, it can be hard to open your eyes to the problems facing dolphins in many tourist attractions. About 59 countries keep these animals in captivity and many of them are cruelly captured to be sold to aquariums and places that use them for shows and other activities for tourists. In addition to being mistreated by being forced to repeat tricks, these animals do not fare well in pool water.

best places for animal lovers - dolphins - sea - cancun

If you want to see these beautiful, majestic giant fish then why not visit  Cancun  ? Nearby there is the  Sian Ka’na Nature Reserve  where you can spot dolphins in their natural habitat and without the cruelties that exist in aquariums and in places that allow you to ride on dolphins.

13. Swimming with whale sharks in the Philippines or Australia

Are you scared? Don’t worry! You will not lose your arm with these guys. Ah, but are you worried about sustainable tourism? Still, don’t worry! It’s just about making good choices. One of the main attractions in the  Philippines  is the opportunity to swim with whale sharks. But there are places where the rules are followed and the activity is carried out naturally as well as places that are not very ethical.

best places for animal lovers - whale shark

The two main sites where activities take place is Oslob and Donsol. In the second, sightings of whale sharks are not guaranteed, precisely because they do everything ethically, letting the activity happen naturally. Meanwhile, in Oslob, sharks are attracted to plankton bought in bulk and rules of interaction with sharks are not respected.

14. Monkeys in the Amazon Rainforest and Uganda

Monkeys are often victims of exploitative tourism, because they are intelligent and easily domesticated. They are used in performance shows, circuses and many zoos that have very poor conditions. It is very common for them to suffer ill-treatment in training and many have been caught illegally, so avoid this kind of attraction.

best places for animal lovers - Amazon Rainforest and Uganda

In Brazil it is possible to see dozens of species in the Amazon Rainforest. In Uganda, the most common are the orangutans and gorillas. Other countries like Costa Rica and Thailand also have opportunities to see several species of monkey in the wild. But you need to research well to make sure there is no exploitative tourism.

15. Penguins on Isla Martillo

King Penguins and Penguins of Magellan go to Isla Martillo, an island in the Beagle Channel in  Argentina,  to mate between October and April every year. They are super-docile animals and like to interact with humans, so they will not be frightened by your presence.

best places for animal lovers - penguins

Check out hostels in Argentina

In spite of this, to maintain the preservation of the place and to not disturb the reproduction, both the contact and the number of people that can visit the island is quite limited. Book your tour in advance.

In any contact with animals, remember to always respect their natural habitat and try not to do anything that can cause stress to them.

Sky Falconry (California)

Kangaroo sanctuary (australia), farm sanctuary (new york).

Travel to upstate New York to visit the Farm Sanctuary , home to more than 800 rescued farm animals including cows, pigs, goats, sheep and chickens. Most of the animals have been rescued from factory farms, but at the sanctuary, they can roam free. You can rent a cabin or tiny home for overnight visits to get an inside look at what farm life is like. And if you happen to be on the West Coast, there is an additional Farm Sanctuary location in Los Angeles. This spot would make a fun family trip for the entire family.

Kauai Humane Society (Hawaii)

Elephant nature park (thailand), dog sledding (greenland), four seasons resort & residences jackson hole (wyoming), lewa wildlife conservancy (kenya), best friends animal society (utah), wild animal sanctuary (colorado), we recommend.

7 Unique Places For Animal Lovers To Travel In 2022

  • Activities and Interests
  • Destinations

When I began traveling full time, animals were not the first thing on my list to see. As I traveled more and more, however, I realized that prior to quitting my job, my vacations acquainted me only with animals in zoos. After seeing animals in their natural habitat, I’ve become less enamored with seeing them in cages. If you love animals as much as I do, traveling to see them in their home is an entirely worthwhile experience. As I reflect on my travels over the past few years, here are the places where you can see some of my favorite animals.

animal lovers places to visit

1. Namibia And Botswana

If you’ve never been to Africa , it’s almost impossible to describe the safari experience where lions mate, rhinos fight, and leopards attack right in front of your safari truck. What I love about Africa is that locals feel the animals have as much of a right to the land as people do.

Highlights of Africa, for me, were Etosha National Park in Namibia and Chobe National Park in bordering Botswana . Etosha left me surprised and awed by its nighttime viewing areas. Floodlights are set up around a watering hole so you can sit quietly and watch elephants, giraffes, hyenas, and more come out at night for a drink. I wondered how many would survive the night when the lions came out.

I found my jaw dropping as we drove along vast empty plains in Namibia and Botswana and then found a herd of elephants underneath a giant tree by the side of the road. Another day, we stopped to watch a giraffe grazing nearby. He was so close I thought he might put his head through my window.

While everyone wants to see “The Big 5” (lions, cape buffalo, leopards, rhinoceros, and elephants), there is other wildlife that will delight you. My first animal in Africa was the Oryx. To my eye, it looked like someone had painted its tribal markings and I couldn’t help but stare. The dassie, a bit like a giant gerbil, is adorable, and, surprisingly, related to the elephant. Cheetahs are beautiful, though you’re less likely to catch them outside of reserves these days.

Finally, if you’re a bird fan, you’ll get your fix in here. I had no interest in birds before I went. Then the lilac-breasted roller changed my opinion with its spectacular range of colors.

One of my next trips will be to Uganda to make up for my pandemic-canceled gorilla trek. I can only imagine how spectacular it is to see them and chimpanzees up close.

Pro Tip: Go see the rhinoceros as soon as possible. Due to the horrible poaching market, they may be extinct all too soon. The Rothschild’s giraffe is another one at risk of extinction. Though many efforts exist to stop poachers, it’s the market that needs to be stopped, in my opinion.

Dusky langur monkey in Thailand.

2. Thailand

You can only view elephants in captivity, but it’s still an amazing experience. I loved spending the day following a herd around, babies included, watching them frolic in dirt and pull down entire trees for something to eat.

Nothing quite describes the feeling of taking a mud bath with an elephant. I’m still amazed we could get so close. And feeding bananas to the babies who wrap their trunks around your hand is magical.

My other favorite animal in Thailand is the dusky langur monkey. Not only is it beautiful with its specific blend of black and white fur (babies are yellow), it’s also a kind and funny animal. My guide took us to a spot where we could feed them. Whether from the ground or from the comfort of your shoulder, they reach their hand out and gently remove the food from your palm. I got in the middle of some playful rough-housing between two young monkeys. One of them gently grabbed my leg, using me as a shield, looked up at me, and smiled.

Perhaps the most special thing about this species is how the parents seem to have a loving relationship with each other and their babies. This is a species worth making a long trip to see!

Pro Tip: When planning your visit to see elephants, do your research to make sure you work with a company that treats them humanely.

Water buffalo in the mud in Vietnam.

I’ve mentioned in prior articles that I love cows. Vietnam offers water buffalo, and they stole my heart. They walk along roads in the middle of towns as if on an important business trip. You can get very close to them, and if you like, take a tour where you can walk with and ride them. They are kind, graceful animals, and one of my favorites in the world.

Vietnam also has beautiful langur species monkeys throughout the country, including the red-shanked douc. I didn’t see them on my first trip, just one of many reasons I want to return to this wonderful country.

Pro Tip: You may have to be intentional about seeing animals in Vietnam. Though they’re in the wild, they’re often only in certain parts of the country. Do your research ahead of time.

4. Costa Rica

My full-time journey began in this country, rich with lush forests everywhere you look. This was the first time in my life I saw a monkey in a tree, over my head. Once you’ve heard the howler monkey, you’ll never forget it. They have a very distinct call, and you’ll want to imitate and hear it every day! My first sighting of them was in Guanacaste, and Manuel Antonio offers paths that feel magical when you hear a pack of howler monkeys screaming in the near distance.

Obviously, you can’t leave Costa Rica without seeing a sloth. If you’re lucky, you’ll see them happily hanging from a tree branch. Unfortunately, many of them end up in animal sanctuaries after near-death experiences like trying to swing onto an electrical line. They are very sweet-looking animals.

The other thing Costa Rica is amazing for is frogs. My favorites were the nighttime zoos where frogs of all colors came out. I was lucky to get a photo of one of the most famous red-tree frogs they’re known for. They’re much smaller than I realized and I treasure my photographic memories of them.

Aldabra giant tortoise in Seychelles.

5. Seychelles

I spent my honeymoon in the Seychelles many years ago. Though the marriage didn’t work out, I’ll never forget those giant tortoises! I was only familiar with tortoises that could fit in my hand, so standing next to one who could extend his neck and be taller than me was fascinating. The other thing anyone who’s seen them will tell you is the sound of their shells scraping together while mating is a noise you won’t ever forget!

Kiwi bird on Stewart Island, New Zealand.

6. New Zealand

After almost 2 years living in New Zealand , I’ve fallen in love with a few of the birds here. In fact, even though some of them wake me up too early, I’ll miss them when I’m gone!

The kiwi bird, clearly, is one of the most fascinating in New Zealand, and perhaps the world. You won’t see one too easily outside of reserves. I was lucky to have a friend take me on a night walk where we saw several in the bushes. Their gait and speed are prehistoric-looking, and while I associate birds with feathers, the kiwi has what looks like spiky hair. They were on the verge of extinction, but the country has worked hard to save them.

The tūī has the most interesting call — with a dual voice box and multiple calls, you’ll know immediately when one is nearby.

The fantail is the most interactive. We’re part of its food chain, so it flies nearby, hoping your footsteps unearth a meal. If you’re lucky, they’ll fly right at you, and just when you think they might land on your arm or your head, they fly off in a way that will have you wondering if they might have recently had a drink. They’re charming, and I’ve loved hearing their gossip throughout the day.

The kererū, or wood pigeon, is the funniest. It’s a large bird that always chooses to land on a narrow branch or a bush that appears unable to sustain its weight. I’ve never seen one fall, so I guess they know what they’re doing.

7. Argentina

This is a huge country with multiple climates. Not surprisingly, there are some wonderful animals that live there as a result.

A herd of guanaco in Argentina.

These llama-like animals are fun to see in the wild. If you travel around Argentina by bus, you’ll see a lot of them grazing in the near distance. You won’t be able to get up close, but you will get curious stares if you stand still.

Hummingbird in flight in Argentina.

Hummingbirds

While I loved the hummingbird park in Selvatura , Costa Rica, because they land on your hand to feed, Iguazu has a hummingbird park that is so wonderful I returned three times. It’s filled with many different varieties of hummingbirds and if you stay long enough, you can capture some magical photos.

Pro Tip: Hummingbird wings move incredibly fast. You’ll need to use a very high shutter speed to capture them on camera.

Penguins on the island of Martillo, Argentina.

If you’ve ever wanted to see penguins in their natural habitat, Argentina gives you the perfect experience. I went to Ushuaia and spent a day on the small island of Martillo. I highly recommend the option where you can get off the boat and walk on the island. A strict distance is maintained between you and the penguins, but even several feet away, you appreciate being with them. You’ll learn about their mating and migration rituals, and be smitten. I was lucky to see a King penguin on the island, which is highly unusual.

  • Make sure you inquire where the Magellanic penguins will be when you arrive in Argentina. This breed migrates between Puerto Madryn and Ushuaia seasonally, so the colony size will be larger or smaller depending on when you visit. The gentoo penguin is in Ushuaia year-round.
  • PiraTour is the only company that offers the experience of walking with the penguins. It’s likely to be sold out, so book as early as possible.

10 places to get up close and personal with America's largest animals

For intriguing animal encounters in the U.S., look beyond traditional zoos. There are animal sanctuaries and rescues; farms; and even big-game parks that allow visitors to touch, interact, snuggle and take photos with unbelievable species. From orphaned tigers, shark viewing from cages, to wolves, you can get so close to animals that you can smell them, starting with manatees in Crystal River, Florida: In the western part of Florida, Crystal River is one of the the only places in the United States to legally swim with manatees . Because the manatees are endangered and sensitive to human interaction, you cannot touch these animals. However, they often come up to humans to interact.

19 Vacations for Animal Lovers to Consider

Below you will find some of our favorite vacation spots for those who love animals. Our in-house travel experts have visited each of these places and are happy to share their insider knowledge with you!

1. Tanzania

Located in eastern Africa, Tanzania is home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites and is one of the best places to see the Big Five in all of Africa. Without a doubt, one of the highlights of a safari here is visiting the Ngorongoro Crater which is located adjacent to Serengeti National Park. This large volcanic caldera is home to one of the world’s biggest concentrations of wildlife

One of the best times to visit Tanzania is during the Great Migration from June through August when you can see thousands of zebras, gazelles, and wildebeests make their way across the Serengeti. The weather during this time tends to be much drier than in other seasons which draws more animals to watering holes, greatly increasing your chances of animal sightings.

Important info: While Tanzania is lucky enough to have a small rhino population, these numbers are dropping quickly due to continuous poaching. Although we know that it’s tempting, it’s incredibly important that you don’t post photos of rhinos on Facebook or social media as these images could potentially be used to help poachers discover where rhinos are.

After you have finished your safari, you can head to Zanzibar where you relax on stunning white sand beaches. If you’re feeling energetic, you can also climb Mount Kilimanjaro!

2. South Africa

Like Tanzania, South Africa is famous for its wide array of African animals. Elephants, giraffes, and lions can all be found here. However, unlike Tanzania, many of the national parks can be explored in your own vehicle. This makes it considerably cheaper than doing an African safari. Some of the most famous self-drive parks include Kruger National Park which is easily accessible from Johannesburg by both private and public transport, and Addo National Park which is located approximately halfway between Durban and Cape Town and acts as a great pitstop while traveling between the two cities. If you would prefer to leave the car behind and join an organized safari, this can easily be arranged through some of the local accommodation providers or by booking directly through one of the many tour operators here.

Many visitors choose to combine a trip to Kruger National Park with additional travel throughout the country. For many, Cape Town is one of the trip’s highlights thanks to its jaw-droppingly beautiful topography, laid-back vibe, and incredible surrounding attractions. From here, you can head up to Stellenbosch to try some of the country’s world-class wines direct from the source. Alternatively, you can make your way up the coastline to check out South Africa’s rugged beaches which are a photographer’s delight.

While the Bahamas has always been a go-to destination in the Caribbean for North Americans, social media has brought to light one very unique activity that is drawing animal lovers to these gorgeous islands. Yep, you may have already guessed it! It’s swimming with pigs. These adorable little critters live on Exuma and call Big Major Cay home. No one knows for sure how they got here. It’s believed that they either were left here by sailors who never came back for them, or they managed to swim to safety from a nearby shipwreck and created their own piggy paradise.

There are about 20 pigs that now live on what has unsurprisingly become known as Pig Beach. It’s only accessible by sea and you can either arrive by your own private boat or by a day tour. If you bring a couple of pieces of fruit with you, you may find yourself surrounded by some new best friends!

4. Istanbul

While Turkey itself isn’t particularly famous for its wildlife, it’s still definitely a great place for animal lovers thanks to the many stray dogs and cats that call Istanbul home. Unlike in other cities around the world, the animals of Istanbul are taken care of and some may say that they are even spoiled.

While walking down the streets of this breathtaking city, you will find special “houses” where cats can seek shelter from the elements. These houses are usually surrounded by food and are well-maintained. Meanwhile, the stray dogs of Istanbul are gentle giants that lounge around on the street corners and sidewalks much like some members of the local population.

In my personal experience, many of the cats and dogs that you see are more than happy to hang out with you for a bit in exchange for a few pats and cuddles, making this the perfect place for animal lovers.

What happens when you combine one of the world’s largest populations of vegetarians with an incredibly diverse landscape? It’s an animal lover’s dream come true! India is well-known for its worship of cows, but what many people don’t realize is that its compassionate treatment of animals goes far beyond that.

One of the best things about visiting India is the sheer size and diversity of the country, making it easy to combine a few different types of vacations into one. For instance, you can spend a few days exploring the historical wonders of Delhi and Rajasthan and follow it up with a few days of beach time in Goa before heading up into the foothills of the Himalayas in Rishikesh. There, you can immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature.

As you travel around, don’t be surprised to find cows meandering their way down the street, stray dogs that are so well-fed that they are beginning to resemble bowling balls, and mischievous goats and monkeys that take advantage of the moment when humans look away so that they can steal food. India also happens to be one of the best places in the world to try delectable vegetarian cuisine, so you may even find yourself understanding exactly how the dogs got that way!

When it comes to once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, trekking through Uganda’s Bwindi Forest National Park to see mountain gorillas has got to be pretty high up there! These gentle giants live high in the mountainsides of Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo and it’s thrilling to see them in their natural environment. The cost of a gorilla trek is very expensive, but much of the money goes back into the local communities to help the preservation of the natural environment, reduce poaching, and provide valuable financial support for the villages around the park. It’s imperative to book well in advance as trekking permits can be snapped up pretty quickly, particularly during the high season.

It’s also important to remember that because the gorillas live deep in the jungle, there will be some hiking involved. The amount of time depends on how long it takes for the rangers to find them. You will want to wear long pants that you can tuck into your socks and a sturdy pair of hiking boots as they can get very muddy depending on the time of year that you go.

When many people think of a dream beach destination, they often imagine a place with gorgeous white sand beaches, aquamarine water, swaying palm trees, and a gentle breeze. If you’re one of those people, Hawaii is where it’s at!

One of the main reasons that many people visit Hawaii is to see the abundance of marine life there. If you want to unleash your Little Mermaid and make friends like Sebastian and Flounder, some of the best snorkeling spots include the Molokini Crater, Coral Gardens, and Turtle Town which is the best place to see sea turtles on Maui and Hulopoe Bay. Don’t forget Molokai on Lana’i and Hanauma Bay and Sharks Cove on Oahu. In all of these places, you can feel the magic of fish swirling around you as you swim through the crystal-clear water. Some are accessible by walking off the beach while others can only be reached by boat. Regardless of how you decide to do it, you’re guaranteed to have a magical experience.

8. Australia

Much like Africa, Australia is home to many unique species of wildlife that can be found nowhere else on the planet. From playful kangaroos who will eat out of your hand to chubby wombats that resemble cartoon characters, Australia’s wildlife is a major attraction to the “Land Down Under” and a great reason for animal lovers to make the long journey there.

While you’re likely to see kangaroos if you travel outside of the major cities, one of the best ways that you can guarantee some truly memorable animal experiences is by visiting one of the wildlife reserves or zoos where you can get a closer look at these amazing creatures. From south Australia to Tasmania, you will find these sanctuaries throughout the country, meaning you don’t have to go far to see something remarkable.

Some of the most popular, although not always the most easily accessible, destinations to see Australia’s animal life is the Great Barrier Reef. This is one of the best vacation destinations for scuba diving and snorkeling. Additionally, Rottnest Island is home to a resident population of quokkas. These wallaby-like marsupials have become the mascots of this island located a short boat ride from the coast of Perth and are a delight to interact with. They are completely tame and even love to pose for a selfie or two!

9. Everglades National Park, Florida

Everglades National Park offers mind-boggling diversity in terms of plants and animals. Encompassing more than 1.5 million acres of tropical wetlands and thick mangroves. It’s a breathtaking sight to behold. The icing on the cake is the chance to see alligators, crocodiles, snakes, panthers, Florida black bears, river otters, and even manatees as you cruise through the park on an airboat. There are plenty of tours available that will take you deep into the park and give you a great understanding of the biodiversity of the environment.

10. Antarctica

Despite the remoteness of earth’s seventh continent, a trip to Antarctica is more accessible than you may think. Cruises leave frequently throughout the summer months and begin making their way across the Drake Passage. Before you know it, you will begin to see incredible wildlife including whales, penguins, and seals in its natural habitat. It’s definitely one of the most surprising vacations for animal lovers!

During most cruises, you can choose extra “excursions” such as camping on the ice, paddleboarding, or kayaking that allow you to get an even closer look at the animals. When I went to Antarctica, I decided to do paddle boarding. Although it was expensive, it was well worth the money to see penguins and sea lions gliding below me as I made my way through the icy waters.

11. Costa Rica

Located roughly in the middle of Central America, Costa Rica has long been an eco-tourism destination thanks to its ecological diversity. You’ll be blessed with its lush rainforests that are home to over 100 different species of trees, plus sloths, monkeys, and tons of exotic birds.

12. Galapagos Islands

Part of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are an ecological wonderland full of diverse flora and fauna. This is where Charles Darwin developed his theory of evolution, and since then, millions of visitors have made their way there to see the giant tortoises, iguanas, sharks, sea lions, blue-footed boobies (yes, that is really their name), and many more.

Despite their location around 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are surprisingly easy to visit with direct flights leaving from Guayaquil. Once you arrive, you have two different options for exploring the islands. The first is via a cruise which can take you to some of the more remote areas and allow you to see a breathtaking variety of animals. Alternatively, you can visit the three main islands of the chain including San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, and Isabela. From these islands, you can do different day trips such as snorkeling and kayaking while staying in one of the many budget-friendly accommodation options.

13. The Amazon Rainforest

After you have finished your trip to the Galapagos, you can also head back to the mainland and start making your way into the Amazon rainforest which straddles the borders of Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Colombia, and Guyana. This is one of the most ecologically diverse places on the planet with more than 40,000 plant species, 3,000 freshwater fish species, and 370 types of reptiles. You can explore a small section of it during a multiday tour. During your trip, you may get a chance to see sloths, anacondas, jaguars, pink river dolphins, and black spider monkeys. It isn’t easy to reach this stretch of ecological magic but you will be well-rewarded when you’re there.

Keep in mind that mosquitos in the Amazon are roughly the size of baseballs and can seemingly bite you through multiple layers of clothing. Unless you want to finish your trip looking like a much bumpier version of yourself, I highly recommend bringing the strongest insect repellent you can find. In addition, before you head into the Amazon, check around at the local market to see what they use to prevent and treat mosquito bites. You would be surprised at how effective their traditional medicine can be!

14. Saudi Arabia

When many people think of Saudi Arabia, they likely imagine an immense desert. However, this vast country not only offers some of the best snorkeling in Europe and the Middle East just off the coast of Jeddah, but the country’s mountains are also home to a resident population of monkeys that are photographed so frequently that it almost feels like they are starting to become mascots of the country. While the Gulf States are big consumers of meat, it’s still very easy to find vegetarian foods thanks to the influence of the Levant, India, and North Africa.

Located on the far-western reaches of North America, Alaska is a rugged land full of monumental beauty and amazing wildlife. Here, you can see Alaska’s very own “Big Five” including bears, moose, caribou, wolf, and Dall sheep on a wildlife tour. Also, consider going on a whale-watching tour! Many visitors travel to Alaska via cruise ship or go directly to Denali National Park, one of the state’s biggest (literally) treasures, for a self-drive tour of this spectacular landscape. If you’re lucky, you may even see bald eagles swirling lazily through the air high above you.

Alaska is also a great destination for adventure travelers, and you can go hiking, biking, river rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, and dog sledding while you’re there. Best of all, you can access Alaska via seaplane, car, or train which makes this a great destination for many different kinds of travelers!

16. Thailand

With endless opportunities for snorkeling in the south and NGO-based animal sanctuaries in the north, as well as plenty of mouth-watering vegetarian dishes, Thailand is a fabulous country for animal lovers. There are heaps of opportunities for animal encounters such as snorkeling on Phi Phi Island or visiting the Elephant Nature Park, an elephant rescue and rehabilitation center in Chaing Mai.

Expert tip: While Thailand makes for one of the best vacations for animal lovers, it’s important to choose where you spend your money wisely. There are many places that mistreat animals for the benefit of tourists, and sometimes, these masquerade as animal sanctuaries. Make sure to do thorough research about an attraction or destination before visiting and try to book with local operators as much as possible to ensure that the money stays within the local communities.

17. Yellowstone National Park

Located mostly in Wyoming, Yellowstone National Park is a nature lover’s paradise. This massive park features more than 2.2 million acres of untouched wilderness that includes some of the country’s most active geothermal zones, alpine rivers, and dramatic canyons. People travel here in hordes to be able to hike on the many miles of hiking trails, explore its waterfalls, and view the diverse wildlife.

Yellowstone National Park is home to wolverines, bighorn sheep, black bears, white-tailed deer, and mountain goats. However, the most famous local residents are bison. Despite the population being nearly decimated by hunters and poachers at the start of the 20th century, this remarkable herd managed to survive and thrive. Yellowstone is now the only place in the continental United States to have a continuously free-ranging bison population since prehistoric times. Thousands of bison freely roam around the park, and lucky visitors can view these magnificent, and slightly awkward-looking, animals during their visit.

Like Tanzania, Kenya is famous for its Big Five. Although there are small animal reserves found throughout the country, including a strangely-located one right next to the Nairobi Airport, most animal-loving visitors head straight to the Masai Mara National Reserve to get a chance to view their favorite African animals in their natural habitat. These include giraffes, lions, hyenas, elephants, and, my personal favorite, warthogs.

The best time to visit is during the Great Migration when 1.5 million wildebeests make their way from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara. Since this occurs during the dry season, you’re also more likely to see predators which is perfect because the Masai Mara is world-renowned for its big cat population that includes leopards, lions, cheetahs, and more.

There are two ways that you can get to the Masai Mara. The first is via an organized safari which can be pretty pricey. However, this is a great option for first-time visitors who want to be able to relax and enjoy the experience rather than trying to handle the logistical difficulties that traveling throughout Africa can present. If you want to have a bit more of a budget-friendly adventure, you can take public transport to the villages on the outskirts of the park and stay at one of the local lodges there. You can then join one of the day trips that go into the Masai Mara.

19. Mauritius

Although Mauritius isn’t famous for its wildlife like other countries in Africa are, this island nation has a lot to offer animal lovers. There are plenty of options for snorkeling, and it’s possible to take day trips to many of the outlying islands where you can see scores of colorful tropical fish and sea turtles. Sadly, much of the coral in Mauritius is dead, but as you glide through the water, you can see it regaining signs of life.

It was then rebuilt again (identically) only in 2000.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 15. At the foot of the Kropotkinskaya metro station.
  • Opening hours . Daily: 10: 00-17: 00, except Monday: 13: 00-17: 00
  • Free entry (some closing restrictions, for example a short)

Good to know! In orthodox religious places, one must avoid excessively uncovered clothing. Women should cover their heads. After visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you can explore Bolotny Island and Gorky Park. This is one of the routes our guide to Moscow.

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The old Krasny Oktyabr factory: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow

If you cross the Moskva River by a pedestrian bridge which is located just in front of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the city and at the same time you can discover Balchug Island. Furthermore, if you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, you can include this island in your itinerary between the cathedral and Gorky park. Here is the old confectionery factory Krasny Oktyabr, which has gradually turned into a fashionable micro-district. There are then some elements of street art, cafes and restaurants and some Moscow bohemian side. At the end of the island you can see a gigantic 98-meter-high monument dedicated to the Russian reforming tsar Pierre The Great.

Good to know! You can find on this island are the trendiest nightclubs in Moscow. On weekends, there are taxi caps after midnight so there are so many people. On the other hand, if you go there in winter and during the day, the island is quite empty and less interesting to see.

Gorky Park is one of the TOP places to visit in Moscow, because it allows you to better understand the life of the locals and their rhythm. In fact, it’s a huge entertainment park. For example, in winter there is a giant ice rink and in summer – free dance or yoga lessons, sandy beaches for playing volleyball, an outdoor cinema. So, like the locals, have a Stakantchik (ice cream or cooked corn), and enjoy the atmosphere of the place: that’s one of the interesting things to do in Moscow to discover the city.

  • Where? Krymsky Val 9. 20 minutes’ walk from Krasny Oktyabr, along the quays.

Sparrow Hill and Moscow State University

The Sparrow Hill, Vorobiovy Gori in Russian, is the highest point in Moscow. It is rather known to Russians, but less to travelers. A nice view on Moscow opens from the hill, and in particular on the Luzhniki Stadium. In addition, on the hill itself is the Moscow State University: an impressive skyscraper from the Soviet era.

  • How to get there? By bus T7 (35 min) from Oktyaborskaya station, near Gorki Park. By metro (Vorobiovy Gorki station) + climb the hill on foot. On foot along the Moskva along the Gorky Park (1h30) + climb in funiculars.

Good to know! It is possible to cross the Moskva river by funicular. We actually tested it and it was pretty cool! That is one of our favorite things to do in Moscow!

What to do in Moscow

What to do in Moscow in 3 days?

If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days, it would be interesting to dive into the Soviet era which strongly marked the country and the city. After the Bolshevik Revolution, the capital was transferred from Saint Petersburg to Moscow, in order to mark the change of power. Moscow then became the world showcase for communist ideology. Here are the best things to do in Moscow for 3-day-trip!

VDNKh, visit Moscow of the Soviet era

VDNKh is a large exhibition center in the north of Moscow, where there are still several striking witnesses of the USSR. The most interesting are the Museum of Cosmonauts and the Statue of the Worker and the Kolkhozian , which will certainly impress you with its size!

Visit

GULAG History Museum

The explanations of the museum are very well done. We really have the feeling of going back in time. If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days and you are interested in history and this subject in particular, I recommend this museum. Visit the GULAG History Museum is one of the most interesting things to do in Moscow.

Discover the Patriarche Pounds district

It’s a nice neighborhood in Moscow where you can come across rather affluent locals, but not necessarily very bling-bling. Take a walk in this area is really a cool thing to do in Moscow! In addition, the Ponds of Patriarch is one of the places of Bulgakov’s novel “Master and Margarita”. As this is an interesting area to see, we have included it in a walking tour of Moscow. The route ends at the Moscow Kremlin, which is very convenient, because you will be able to visit Moscow in 3 days by optimizing your trips.

What to visit in Moscow in 4 days: TOP things to do in Moscow in 4 days

If you want to visit Moscow in 3 days, you will already see a lot of things. On the other hand, if you stay one more day, you have plenty to do! The Novodevichy Convent, the Tchistie Proudy district and the Izmaylovo Kremlin are very good candidates for you, if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days.

Visiting Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

The Novodevichy Convent is one of the most brilliant examples of Russian architecture, according to UNESCO. This beautiful complex was built in 1524 and today consists of the convent, but also of a cemetery whose status could be compared to that of Père-Lachaise in Paris. Visiting Novodevichy Convent is one of the great things to do in Moscow, if you want to go a little bit outside of the center!

What to see in Moscow in one day

Discovering Tchistye Proudy district

It’s one of the most popular areas of Moscow, with many cafes, restaurants and bars nearby. It is therefore a place to discover if you want to visit Moscow in 4 days. It is just as pleasant for a stroll as for the discovery of local life. For example, in winter the pond turns into an ice rink.

Visiting the Izmaylovo Kremlin, one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

The Izmaylovo Kremlin is more of a tourist than a historic place. On the other hand, it is a pretty impressive place to discover, especially on weekends. Inside the Kremlin, there is a flea market where you can find a little bit of everything, but mostly good souvenirs to bring from Moscow. For example, chapka, traditional Russian scarves or matryoshka (Russian dolls). Add the Kremlin and the Izmaïlovo market to your itinerary if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days, because it is a nice and very colorful place! Visiting the Izmailovo Kremlin is one of the things to do in Moscow, if you want to put colors in your Instagram account! 😉

Things to do Moscow blog

In 4 days, we will have the opportunity to see several Moscow: Classic Moscow, Moscow of old Russia, Soviet Moscow and a little bit of the new Moscow. So what to visit in Moscow on the 5th day of travel?

What to visit in Moscow in 5 days?

Art lovers will be delighted to discover the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, while others will prefer to stroll along Arbat Street, see the buildings of Moskva-City or visit Bunker 42.

Admiring Russian art at Tretyakov Gallery

Founded in 1856 by an industrialist and great lover of art, the gallery has grown over the decades, and then bequeathed to the state. Today the collection includes more than 140,000 pieces, 15,000 of which are paintings. Visiting the Tretyakov Gallery is one of the things to do in Moscow if you want to discover Russian art!

  • Where? Pereoulok Lavrouchinski 10. A 5-minute walk from Tretiakovskaya station
  • Opening hours. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Closed on Mondays.
  • Entry tickets. 500 RUB.

Museum to see

Visiting the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts

The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts presents the treasures of ancient Egypt, the paintings of Rembrandt and Cézanne, a fine collection of Impressionism.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 12
  • Opening hours. Daily: 10: 00-20: 00, except Thursday: 11: 00-21: 00. Closed on Mondays. The boxes close an hour before closing.
  • Entry tickets. The prices vary according to the collections from 300 to 750 RUB.

Walking on Arbat Street

All Russians know Rue Arbat. So, walking on Arbat street is one of the things to do in Moscow. However, after the years, little by little it became very touristy. This is a pedestrian street only. There are souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes there, but it is no longer the most authentic neighborhood in the city.

Seeing the buildings of Moskva-City (Moscow City)

Moskva-City is Moscow’s business center, much like Paris’s Defense district. The skyscrapers of Moskva-City are among the tallest in Europe: 373 meters high! Very nice place to see at dusk.

Good to know! You can admire a nice view of Moscow City from the docks of Tarasa Shevchenko. It’s especially beautiful in the evening with all the lights on.

Bunker 42, one of the most unusual things to do in Moscow

Bunker 42 is a secret military complex which was to be used by the Soviets in the event of a nuclear attack: a space of 7000 m² 65 meters underground!

  • Where? 5 Kotelnitcheski Lane, 11.
  • Prices. 2200 RUB per person
  • Opening hours. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Restaurant inside. Original, but rather a tourist trap.

What to visit in Moscow in 6 days or more?

There are still so many places to see, because Moscow is a big megalopolis and there is always something exciting to do there. For example: the ancient Kolomenskoye village or the WINZAVOD contemporary art center .

If you are interested in history and want to see Russian cities on a rather “human scale”, it would certainly be interesting for you to discover the cities of the Golden Ring . For example, it is very easy to get to Sergey Posad from Moscow (less than 2 hours in train). Visiting the Golden Ring is one of the best things to do in Moscow if you are staying more than a 5-6 days.

There are still plenty of places to see in Moscow, however I did my best to list here the best things to do in Moscow, what to see in Moscow in one day, but also in 2, 3, 4 or 5 days in Moscow!

32 movies every animal lover needs to see

<p> If you’re an animal lover, nothing tugs at the heartstrings quite like a movie about the object of our affections. Children, in particular, are enraptured by cute animals, whether it’s pet dogs with a mission to save the world, or a lion cub being freed from captivity. And any adult who has ever loved an animal – be it cat, dog, horse, or even dolphin – can’t fail to delight in a movie with these amazing creatures at the centre.                    </p> <p> The movies with real animals are sublime in their skill and trainability, but even the animated adventures succeed in drawing us in; they all make us laugh – and cry. For an animal-lover, nothing does tear-jerking better than an emotional scene involving our beloved four-legged friends (not forgetting the finned and winged ones, too).                    </p> <p> Here’s a selection of the best animal movies for you and your family to enjoy.                    </p>

<p> There have been several movies, including a Disney version, of this 19th-century novel by Anna Sewell about a colt who is sold to a succession of cruel owners, toils away pulling London taxi cabs and eventually collapses through misuse before retiring to a rural idyll. Emotionally harrowing, with an uplifting conclusion.                    </p> <p> The 1994 version is the most faithful and arguably the best adaptation (starring Sean Bean and Alan Cumming). </p>

25 Places to Visit in Moscow you Can’t Miss

25 Places to Visit in Moscow

Do you know what the most populous city in Europe is? Most people wouldn’t guess that it is actually Moscow. There are approximately 13 million people in the Moscow metro area, which amounts to approximately 1/10th of all Russians.

This former capitol of the Soviet Union is still the political and financial center of Russia. Just because it is a current business and government city, in no way means that it is boring and not worth a visit. Assuming the political tensions get solved, Moscow is a fascinating city you need to visit.

While lots of people can’t explain the nuances of Russian architecture, most can spot and appreciate it immediately. One of the best ways to see the historic sites is by taking a boat tour down the Moskva River that meanders through the city.

Overall, navigating the city isn’t difficult as there is phenomenal and cheap public transportation (roughly 30 rubles/35 cents per ride). You can also use a cheap Uber on the three ring roads that circle the city at various distances from the center.

Still wondering why you should visit this historic masterpiece of a city? Read on to see the top 25 things you need to see in Moscow.

The House with Animals

The animal house in Moscow Russia

This former church is famous for the terracotta reliefs of animals that adorn the front of the building. It is a favorite of locals, and famous around the world. It was built in approximately 1900.

Resurrection Gate or Iberian Gate and Chapel

The resurrection gate at the entrance to Red square.

The Resurrection Gate is now one of the most common ways to enter Red Square. This gate is also the only standing part of the wall that was the entrance to to Kitai-Gorod, or Moscow’s historic central business district.

St. Basils Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow Russia.

Probably the most famous of the Red Square attractions is St. Basil’s Cathedral. I don’t know if the legend is true or not, but supposedly Tsar Ivan IV poked the eyes of the architect out after completing it so nothing as pretty could be made again. What an awful boss!

Moscow River Cruise

The Moskva River cuts directly through the heart of Moscow. Want to see it all but rest your feet? One of the best things to do in Moscow at night is float along on a dinner cruise . The lights of the city are so beautiful. Of course, dinner in included.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

Machines in Museum of Soviet arcade machines

This is one of the most unique things to do in Moscow. If you know that many American video games paint the Russians as the bad guys, then it’s probably not surprising to learn that you can find an entirely different variety of video games in Russia. This isn’t a recent phenomenon; even historically the video games were different. If you are a video game buff then this stop is for you!

Main Church of the Armed Forces in Park Patriot near Kubinka

Main Church of the Armed Forces in Park Patriot

This church attempts to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ as well as Russian military leader. Yes, it’s an awkward amalgamation. It caused quite a controversy when there were plans to create murals of Vladimir Putin and Joseph Stalin to go along with the ones of Jesus Christ (those plans were scrapped).

Bunker 42 (Cold War Museum)

Meeting room in Bunker 42 Museum of the Cold War - military history museum.

Tunnel at Bunker-42, anti-nuclear underground facility built in 1956 as command post of strategic nuclear forces of Soviet Union.

Americans weren’t the only ones afraid during the Cold War! You can now discover the most secret and secure Bunker of the USSR, Bunker 42. Also known as the Cold War Museum . This former military communication center is now a museum. I recommend this tour that will take you on a private two hour visit of Bunker 42.

If you aren’t interested in a guided tour you can book your tickets in advance here.

Tank Excursion and Bazooka Shooting in Moscow

For real – you can book this tour and actually ride in a tank and shoot off military grade weapons. While that’s not my cup of tea, I know tons of guys would absolutely love to shoot a bazooka!

This cathedral is located in Zaryadye Park (adjacent to Red Square). It is also on the Moskva River. The Cathedral of the icon of the Mother of God “Sign” previously was a monastery.

Komsomolskaya Metro station

Komsomolskaya Metro station in Moscow.

So many of the metro stations are breathtaking works of art. The idea was to create something beautiful that all the regular people could enjoy, or if you are more cynical you could say it was to attempt to show off how well they were doing.

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Stree t

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Street Moscow

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Street look super cool and futuristic, except like many communist projects didn’t actually work that well. They were supposed to be something new and different from the standard “Soviet Blocks.”

There are a number of problems with this design. Supposedly the acoustics are awful making the apartments perpetually noisy. The inner circle becomes a wind chamber even when it’s not that windy. My favorite weakness is that the trapezoid shape of apartments is hard to decorate and even harder to do maintenance on.

Izmailovo District and Izmailovo Kremlin

Izmailovo Kremlin In The Center Of

This area has to be one of the coolest places to visit in Moscow. It features a park in the middle of Moscow that is over 3x the size of New York City’s Central Park. The Kremlin in Izmailovo is a complex located in the Eastern Administrative District of Moscow that is known as the center of culture and entertainment. The wooden buildings are in Russian architecture of the XVI-XVII centuries (not original).

Tretyakov Gallery

retyakov State Gallery In Moscow

For those that appreciate fine art this is where you have to go. The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow Russia is the best collection of Russian fine art in the world. The museum previously hosted worldwide chess tournaments (I can’t help be think of the Queen’s Gambit).

Book your tickets in advance here. Tickets cost about $13 per person.

Kolomenskoe Estate

Kolomenskoe Estate in Moscow Russia

This reconstruction of a former royal estate is just a few miles southeast of the Moscow city center. Supposedly really detailed historical plans survived, so the reconstruction and current museum is incredibly authentic. It was completed in 2010.

Old buildings of Arbat

Old buildings of Arbat Moscow Russia

Arbat is an old street, and was previously the “nicest place to live in Moscow. Even though it fell into disrepair, it’s location, it’s historical buildings, and the fact that it is a pedestrian street are quickly making it a top place to live again.

The Melnikov House

Famous house of architect Melnikov on Arbat street in Moscow Russia

Located on Arbat street, the Famous house of architect Melnikov designed this house (and Lenin’s sarcophagus). Melnikov designed it at a time when private ownership was outlawed, but got around this restriction by saying it was an experimental design to maximize space. Even though others weren’t built, he was able to keep it.

The New Maiden Convent

The New Maiden Convent, built was built to resemble a mini-Kremlin. It stands out to me because this “convent” was the place where women who were no longer welcome in the royal court were banished to.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space at the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics in the Cosmopark

Monument to the Conquerors of Space at the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics in the Cosmopark.

The Americans may have made it to the moon first, but the Russian cosmonauts were first in a number of other achievements. This gigantic obelisk pays homage to their accomplishments.

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve

This royal estate was founded by Catherine the Great. She was Russia’s longest serving female leader. It is now a gorgeous museum!

Stalinist Skyscraper tour

Stalinist Skyscrapers called The Seven Sisters

This group of seven skyscrapers are called the Seven Sisters. They were all made in the Stalinist style, and one was previously the tallest building in Europe. If you want to tour them all while learning about their history book here .

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow

It’s ironic that a country that was so anti-religion for so long has so many great churches. The Cathedral for Christ the Savior was made to thank Jesus for saving Russia. If you are interested in visiting this and so many other cathedrals in Moscow I recommend this tour that will take you to The Cathedral of Christ the Savior many other popular churches in Moscow.

Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Red Square Moscow

This church on Red Square is reconstruction of what was previously there but ordered to be destroy by Joseph Stalin. It is a travesty thinking of all the beautiful things that Stalin destroyed to attempt to implement his vision.

Zaryade Park

glass dome in Zaryadye Park in Moscow

Zaryadye Park is one of the main tourist attractions in Moscow. It is located directly next to the Kremlin, and offers truly amazing views. It is also famous for its “floating bridge” and the fact that there are so many unique features underneath it.

Church of Sign of Blessed Virgin in Dubrovitsy Znamenskaya

Church of Sign of Blessed Virgin in Dubrovitsy Znamenskaya church

The Church of the Theotokos of the Sign (Dubrovitsy), or The Church of the Holy Sign of the Mother of God is located in a village amed Dubrovitsy about 20 miles south of Moscow. It is another Russian Orthodox church, but what makes this one unique is that we aren’t 100% sure who made it, or why is has a style that is completely different than other churches of the time.

The Church of Nicholas The Wonderworker

The Church of Nicholas The Wonderworker on Bersenevka in Moscow.

I love the unique style of the Russian Orthodox churches in Moscow. The golden onion domes stand out across the globe. This church dates back to 1657, though it has been partially destroyed a few times since then.

Moscow University

Moscow University in Russia

Moscow University is one of the Seven Sisters that are the “Stalin Skyscrapers.” Previously it was the tallest building in Europe. Though it has lost that title, it is still the tallest “educational building” in the world.

So what do you think? Next trip to Moscow?

Cuddle kittens for money? Pet food company, animal shelter want to pay you $10K to love cats

animal lovers places to visit

Imagine getting paid $10,000 to cuddle kittens for 4 hours.

Sound like fun? ACANA Pet Food and Best Friends Animal Society have a job just for you.

Through Wednesday, April 10, cat lovers can fill out a short questionnaire on ACANA's website for a chance to get paid $10,000 for cuddling kittens over a 4-hour span at a Best Friend's Animal Society partner shelter in June.

One lucky person will be chosen to help cats get a strong start during "kitten season."

ACANA will also donate 5,000 cases of wet kitten food in April.

Here's what you need to know about cats and a chance to earn cash cuddling them:

What is "kitten season"?

"Kitten season" runs from May through November − a period when shelters see an influx of orphaned kittens that strain resources and space, according to ACANA.

Why is cuddling good for cats and kittens?

Cuddling helps prepare cats and kittens for their forever homes while promoting healthy bonding and socialization skills, according to ACANA.

How long do cats live?

The average lifespan of a cat is 13 to 17 years, according to petmd.com .

Why do cats purr?

Why do cats make biscuits or knead.

Cats knead or "make biscuits" for three reasons, according to Cornerstone Veterinary Hospital of Clifton Park  in New York. Cats knead to get milk from their mother, to tell an owner they feel good during petting and to prepare a nest and get comfortable.

How long are cats pregnant?

A cat's gestation period lasts for 63 to 65 days, or nearly two months, according to petmd.com .

What does catnip do to cats?

Catnip is a common herb of the mint family and can cause behavioral changes in cats, according to petmd.com .

Anxiety, Bedtime and Mating: How Animals May React to the Eclipse

When the total solar eclipse happens on Monday, animals at homes, farms and zoos may act strangely. Researchers can’t wait to see what happens when day quickly turns to night.

This article is part of The Times’s coverage of the April 8 eclipse , the last time a total solar eclipse will be visible in most of North America for 20 years.

While millions of people are preparing to watch the total solar eclipse that will make its way across North America on Monday, the animals in that affected area — in homes, on farms, in zoos and in the wild — missed the news that the moon will block the sun, briefly turning day into night.

How they react to that swift and unexpected change of light and temperature, which in some places will last as long as four and a half minutes, is anyone’s guess.

Cows may mosey into their barns for bedtime. Flamingoes may huddle together in fear. The giant, slow-motion Galápagos tortoise may even get frisky and mate.

Circadian rhythms might take a noticeable hit, with nocturnal animals mistakenly waking up and starting their day only to realize that, whoa, nighttime is already over. And then there will be some animals, perhaps particularly lazy domestic cats or warthogs focused on foraging, who might not give the dark sky a second thought.

“Everybody wants to see how they are going to react,” said Robert Shumaker, the chief executive and president of the Indianapolis Zoo, which will experience nearly four minutes of darkness. It’s one of several prominent zoos situated along the path of totality, a gentle arc stretching from Texas to Maine, where researchers, animal keepers, volunteers and the public will be studying the animals’ response to the eclipse.

Dr. Shumaker, an expert in animal behavior and cognition, said that “most of the animals, of course, they’re going to notice that there’s something unusual happening.”

Most animals will likely be confused by the darkness and will start their nighttime routines, said Dr. M. Leanne Lilly, a veterinary behaviorist at Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

But the way humans react to the eclipse — looking at the sky, expressing excitement or gathering in a group — could affect domesticated animals, like dogs or cats, because pets can act strangely when their humans are acting strangely, Dr. Lilly said.

“That can make any of our domestic animals feel like things are not as safe and predictable as they are supposed to be,” Dr. Lilly said, adding that any unusual human behavior can disturb pets because they are “domesticated to attend to us.”

“We might be the problem,” she said, with a laugh.

How animals will react to solar eclipses can only give hints of animal behavior because the relatively few studies of the topic are often conflicting. One study in 1560 cited that “birds fell to the ground.” Other studies said birds went to roost, or fell silent, or continued to sing and coo — or flew straight into houses. Dogs either barked or whimpered, or did not bark or whimper.

A study of the 1932 eclipse, which was thought to be the first comprehensive research conducted on the subject and included observations from the public, explained that it received “a good deal of conflicting testimony” from people who had observed mammals. It concluded that several animals showed the strongest responses: squirrels ran into the woods and cattle and sheep headed for their barns.

Zoo animals, the study said, showed little or no response, and Dr. Shumaker does not expect the animals at the Indianapolis Zoo to show much of an unusual response, because “they take a lot of things in stride.”

“ We’re thinking that this will be a very casual and easy experience for the animals,” he said, adding that some might experience “a little bit of confusion” about what’s going on. “I certainly don’t anticipate that it will be alarming to them.”

Dr. Shumaker is as curious as anyone to see what the animals will do, and in 2017, Adam Hartstone-Rose, now a professor of biological sciences at North Carolina State University, tried to get some answers. Before that total solar eclipse crossed the United States, he launched a formal study of animals at the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden in Columbia., S.C., and it resulted in what was likely the broadest study of animals during an eclipse since the 1932 effort.

Just as he is doing next week at the Fort Worth Zoo, Dr. Hartstone-Rose assembled a group of researchers, animal keepers and volunteers to observe animals before, during and after totality.

About three-fourths of the 17 species his team studied, including mammals, birds and reptiles, displayed a behavior response to the eclipse, with many of those animals thinking that the change in light meant it was time to prepare for bed. A smaller group of animals, including the giraffes, baboons, gorillas, flamingoes, lorikeets (a type of parrot) and one Komodo dragon showed behavior that was out of the ordinary and could be interpreted as anxiety.

According to the study, the baboons ran around their enclosure as totality approached, and one paced and walked in circles for about 25 minutes. One male gorilla charged the glass. The flamingoes huddled together, encircling their young, vocalizing loudly and looking toward the sky, which is “the kind of thing they might do if they think there’s an aerial predator around,” Dr. Hartstone-Rose said.

The lorikeets grew active and loud just before totality, and during totality flew together to one side of their exhibit. One Komodo dragon rushed to his den but the door was closed, and he “ran erratically” around until daylight returned.

He noted that it was “entirely possible” that the behaviors were triggered not by the eclipse, but by the large crowds and the noises at the zoo, which included fireworks exploding in the distance.

Yet the giraffes’ behavior that day in South Carolina was similar to the animals’ behavior elsewhere during eclipses, including at the Nashville Zoo in 2017, and also in the wild in Zambia during a 2001 eclipse.

“Most of us expected that the giraffes would just kind of be like, ‘Oh, it’s dark, so it’s bedtime,’” said Alyson Proveaux, curator of mammals at the Riverbanks Zoo and one of the observers of the giraffes in 2017. But their reaction was much more dramatic.

Normally, the Riverbanks Zoo giraffes chomp on lettuce, chew their cud, mill about or play with their enrichment toys. But when the sky went dark, according to the study, they stopped eating and huddled in the back of their enclosure, with one pacing and swaying. As the daylight slowly returned, several broke into a gallop for several minutes, which was extremely out of character. Giraffes also galloped during the eclipse at the Nashville Zoo and in Zambia.

“They are creatures of habit,” Ms. Proveaux said. “So we just rocked their world.”

In another part of the Riverbanks Zoo, the Galápagos turtles did something even stranger just before totality that the study described as a “novel response.” Instead of moving slowly around their area, as they usually do, they grouped together and two started mating. During totality, all four tortoises moved faster than usual.

Dr. Hartstone-Rose is curious to see if these responses will be repeated by animals at the Fort Worth Zoo, where he will likely be monitoring the bonobos, which are similar to chimpanzees. He said bonobos often exhibit sexual behavior to alleviate anxiety and that it will be fascinating to see their response to the unexpected darkness.

He also is asking the public to formally observe the animals around them during the eclipse and submit those findings to him so he can include them in his study. Those animals include pets, livestock, as well as wild animals, who also are known to alter their behavior during eclipses.

Scientists have used different types of technology to record wild animal responses to an eclipse. For the 2017 solar eclipse, scientists used radar data from weather stations across the country to study how flying animals responded when day turned into night.

As the sky darkened, the amount of biological activity in the atmosphere fell, they found, suggesting that insects were landing and birds were beginning to roost. In some places, there were also brief pulses of activity during totality, when some nocturnal creatures — which may have included bats, some insects and birds that migrate at night — came to life.

Still, the brief bout of darkness did not seem significant enough to completely convince animals that night had descended. “It’s kind of a muted response,” said Andrew Farnsworth, a visiting scientist at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology who was an author of the study.

Some animals, including many butterflies, are especially sensitive to temperature. During the 2017 eclipse , Robert Michael Pyle, an ecologist and butterfly expert in southwestern Washington, spent hours carefully logging the conditions in his yard and as the temperature dropped, the woodland skippers, a common butterfly species, disappeared. “Two degrees put the butterflies back to bed,” he said.

Although they have been the focus of less research, plants, which require the sun for sustenance, are also affected by eclipses . “As the sun goes away, photosynthesis goes down,” said Daniel Beverly, an ecophysiologist at Indiana University who documented that slowdown in big sagebrush during the 2017 eclipse. The findings highlight the importance of circadian rhythms beyond the animal kingdom, he said.

And careful observations of what organisms do during an eclipse can yield new insights that extend beyond the event itself. The eclipse “is a sort of natural experiment, manipulating light and temperature on a grand scale,” said Candace Galen, an evolutionary ecologist at the University of Missouri who found that bees went quiet during the period of totality in 2017.

In the end, Dr. Hartstone-Rose said, “who knows what’s going through the head of a giraffe.” But his aim is to collect as much data as he can, to try to find out.

He does have one definite answer to a question posed to him again and again: During an eclipse, should you put protective glasses on your dog?

“As a fashion statement, I’m all for it, so go for it,” he said. “But as a safety precaution, no, that’s not something they need to do. Animals do not look at the sun.”

Our Coverage of the Total Solar Eclipse

Dress for the Occasion:  What should you wear for the eclipse? Our fashion critic weighs the options , including an unexpected suggestion from scientists.

Free to View:  Six inmates in upstate New York prisons who sued the state won their lawsuit to view the eclipse , arguing it “is a religious event.” But a statewide prison lockdown during the eclipse will remain in place.

Hearing the Eclipse:  A device called LightSound is being distributed to help the blind and visually impaired experience what they can’t see .

Sky-High Hotel Prices: One Super 8 hotel in the eclipse’s path is charging $949 a night . Its normal rate is $95.

Animal Reactions : Researchers will watch if animals at zoos, homes and farms act strangely  when day quickly turns to night.

A Rare Return:  A total solar eclipse happens twice in the same place every 366 years on average. But people in certain areas will encounter April 8’s eclipse  about seven years after they were near the middle of the path of the “Great American Eclipse.”

No Power Outages:  When the sky darkens during the eclipse, electricity production in some parts of the country will drop so sharply that it could theoretically leave tens of millions of homes in the dark. In practice, hardly anyone will notice  a sudden loss of energy.
