Where each team stands in the current World Test Championship cycle

We take a look at the status of each team and what lies ahead as the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle heads into the closing stages.

The ICC World Test Championship is interestingly poised with the finalists from the previous edition at the top of the standings with the tournament set to begin a short break as focus shifts to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in June.

India and Australia occupy the top two positions but aren’t without competition.

New Zealand and Sri Lanka - with point percentages of 50 percent apiece - are right on their heels while other teams lower down the table will still fancy their chances of reaching the final with several key series to go before the final showdown in mid-2025.

World Test Championship 2023-25 Standings

Series remaining: Bangladesh (2 Tests, home), New Zealand (3 Tests, home), Australia (5 Tests, away)

India started the cycle with a 1-0 series victory in the West Indies before they drew a hard-fought series in South Africa. Returning home for the five-match Test series against England, India lost the first Test in a significant blow, but despite the absence of several key players, went on to win each of the next four Tests to climb to the top of the WTC25 standings.

While five home Tests against Bangladesh and New Zealand could help India consolidate their place at the top, all eyes will be on the five-match away series in Australia, a place they have had success in of late.

Series remaining: India (5 Tests, home), Sri Lanka (2 Tests, away)

Australia, the defending champions, started the cycle with a grueling five-match Test series against a rejuvenated England away from home and managed to retain the Ashes with a 2-2 series scoreline.

A 3-0 series win over Pakistan at home saw Australia climb to the top of the table, but a shock Test loss to a Shamar Joseph-inspired West Indies saw them drop crucial points. The series ended 1-1 but Australia quickly regrouped to seal a 2-0 away victory over New Zealand.

They have stiff challenges lying ahead, though, with two away Tests against Sri Lanka in the sub-continent to follow their five-match home Test series against India, an opponent they haven’t quite had success over at home in the recent past.

New Zealand

Series remaining: Sri Lanka (2 Tests, away), India (3 Tests, away), England (3 Tests, home)

New Zealand blanked a second-string South African Test side at home to climb up the WTC25  standings, but haven’t quite been at their best otherwise.

They drew a two-match Test series in Bangladesh before being beaten 2-0 at home by Australia.

They have bigger challenges awaiting them in the cycle with a three-match away series in India and three home Tests against England aside from two Tests again in the sub-continent when they tour Sri Lanka, a place where their last and only Test series win came in 1984.

The day New Zealand became the WTC21 Champions

Series remaining: New Zealand (2 Tests, home), England (3 Tests, away), South Africa (2 Tests, away), Australia (2 Tests, home)

Sri Lanka will be buoyed by their 2-0 Test series victory in Bangladesh as it sees them climb up the standings ahead of tougher assignments in the cycle. They were hit early in the current cycle with a 2-0 loss to Pakistan at home, but three back-to-back Test wins over Afghanistan and Bangladesh have seen them jump to the top half of the standings.

They have five big away Test matches in England and South Africa, though, which could seriously dent their prospects of finishing within the top two.

The home assignments aren’t any easier either with Australia and New Zealand set to tour the island nation during the cycle.

Series remaining: Bangladesh (2 Tests, home), England (3 Tests, home), South Africa (2 Tests, away), West Indies (2 Tests, home)

Pakistan beat Sri Lanka 2-0 in their backyard in a terrific start to the cycle, but despite putting up a strong fight Down Under in Australia, lost all three Test matches.

They will still be encouraged by the fact that three of their remaining four Test series are at home - against Bangladesh, England and West Indies.

The toughest challenge will be the away series in South Africa in December-January.

West Indies

Series remaining: England (3 Tests, away), Bangladesh (2 Tests, home), South Africa (2 Tests, home), Pakistan (2 Tests, away)

West Indies made a solid impression in the cycle with an away Test win in Australia. Rain saw one of the two home Tests against India end in a draw, but it was in the tour Down Under that West Indies really put up a strong impression, especially with their pace attack.

They have four home Tests against Bangladesh and South Africa and if they can win three of those, West Indies could put themselves in a decent position.

Series remaining: India (2 Tests, away), Pakistan (2 Tests, away), South Africa (2 Tests, home), West Indies (2 Tests, away)

Despite starting the cycle with back-to-back Test wins, over Afghanistan and New Zealand respectively, Bangladesh are going to need everything to go their way if they are to reach a first World Test Championship final.

They lost 2-0 to Sri Lanka at home and have big away assignments in India, Pakistan and West Indies.

The Tigers will hope to take some points from the two-match home series against the Proteas.

Shakib Al Hasan with the golden arm

South Africa

Series remaining: West Indies (2 Tests, away), Bangladesh (2 Tests, away), Pakistan (2 Tests, home), Sri Lanka (2 Tests, home)

Despite being eighth in the WTC25 standings, South Africa aren’t entirely without hope in the current World Test Championship cycle.

They have relatively lower-ranked opposition to face in the upcoming series with four Test matches at home against Asian opposition.

A 2-0 away series loss to New Zealand with a weakened squad significantly dented South Africa’s hopes of reaching the final, but a good second half to the cycle could see them push some of the top teams in the table.

Kagiso Rabada snares a T20 World Cup hat-trick

Series remaining: West Indies (3 Tests, home), Sri Lanka (3 Tests, home), Pakistan (3 Tests, away), New Zealand (3 Tests, away)

England ended the previous World Test Championship with five successive Test wins under a new regime led by the impressive partnership between Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes. A fighting Ashes at home saw them level the series, but a significant blow came later when they were penalised 19 World Test Championship (WTC) points for maintaining a slow over-rate.

With a 4-1 loss to India at home, England are now at the bottom of the points table. They have two home series against West Indies and Sri Lanka and tougher away assignments against Pakistan and New Zealand awaiting them.

Stokes rules himself out of England's T20 World Cup title defence

E ngland Test captain Ben Stokes has ruled himself out of the team's T20 World Cup title defence, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old will skip the tournament in the United States and the West Indies to make sure he is fit to be a fully-fledged all-rounder in Test cricket.

"Opting out of the IPL (Indian Premier League) and the (T20) World Cup will hopefully be a sacrifice that allows me to be the all-rounder I want to be for the foreseeable future," Stokes said in an ECB statement.

Stokes' withdrawal was something of a surprise given that, when asked last month if he would participate in the T20 World Cup in June, he said he had "not even thought about that but I'm available".

It is understood Stokes has not suffered any setbacks after briefly returning to bowling last month during a Test tour of India, where England lost a five-match series 4-1.

There is no lingering discomfort in his left knee following surgery in November.

But although he has long been one of England's leading multi-format cricketers, Stokes has decided to prioritise his role as Test captain.

He hopes to be able to play a full role with both bat and ball during six Tests -- three against the West Indies and three against Sri Lanka -- in the upcoming home season.

The first Test against the West Indies at Lord's starts on July 10, less than two weeks after the June 29 T20 World Cup final in Barbados.

"I'm working hard and focusing on building my bowling fitness back up to fulfil a full role as an all-rounder in all formats of cricket," Stokes said.

"The recent Test tour of India highlighted how far behind I was from a bowling point of view after my knee surgery and nine months without bowling.

"I'm looking forward to playing for Durham in the County Championship before the start of our Test summer."

- 'Firing on all cylinders' -

ECB chief executive Richard Gould, speaking to reporters at The Oval later Tuesday, said: "It was great to see him (Stokes) bowl in India for a short spell, but that probably has just told him how much he still needs to do in terms of his body.

"I think it's great for English cricket he's got that ambition and he's had his knee sorted.

"Now he's going to make sure that he's back firing all cylinders because he's still a relatively young man in terms of cricket."

Stokes was a central figure as England won the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.

The left-handed batsman's 42 against Sri Lanka in Sydney took England into the knockout rounds, while his unbeaten 52 -- his first fifty in international T20 cricket -- secured victory over Pakistan in the final in Melbourne.

Stokes delayed an operation on a longstanding left knee problem to play in last year's 50-over World Cup in India, where reigning champions England suffered an embarrassing exit before the knockout stages after winning just three of their nine group games.

After undergoing surgery at the end of last year, Stokes was an ever-present in England's defeat in India.

Following the Test series at home to the West Indies, England will tour Pakistan and New Zealand.

IPL 2024, MI vs DC: Suryakumar Yadav out for duck on comeback match after injury

Ipl 2024: mi batter suryakumar yadav failed on his comeback to the indian premier league following a long lay-off due to injury..

  • Suryakumar made his comeback vs DC at Wankhede

MI batter Suryakumar Yadav failed on his comeback to the Indian Premier League following a long lay-off due to injury. Suryakumar was dismissed for a duck against DC during their clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Mumbai batter had been sidelined since the South Africa tour following an ankle injury, and a subsequent sports hernia infection further extended his absence from the field. Suryakumar came out to bat following Rohit Sharma’s dismissal in the seventh over. He was caught by substitute fielder Jake Fraser-McGruck at mid-on off Anrich Nortje’s bowling.

This was the world number 1 T20I batters return following a long lay-off. The injuries had forced Suryakumar to sit out the initial part of 2024, and he spent significant time training at the National Cricket Academy. On April 3, the waiting period ended and Suryakumar received the all-clear to participate in the eagerly anticipated IPL 2024 season.

The clearance, however, wasn't issued hastily. Both the BCCI and the NCA physios were uncompromising in ensuring Suryakumar was completely fit before granting him the green light. The move was a precautionary measure to prevent any further injury to the star batter ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA. On April 5, MI officially announced that Suryakumar had joined the squad once again.

West Indies vs India, 4th T20I - Live Cricket Score, Commentary

india tour for west indies

Again, just to reiterate and perhaps state the obvious, India, for the first time in their T20I history, are playing a super fearless brand of cricket in tune with the times. Nobody's dropping anchor, nobody talks about batting out an innings, nobody bothers cashing in on starts by slowing down and holding up one end. The batsmen come, aim for the stands, and are happy to go out swinging. It's time we go out too, as I, Vineet Anantharaman , sign off on behalf of Pradeep Krishnamurthy , and our scorer, Praveen . Until tomorrow, at Florida again, and perhaps some experimenting, ta ta!!

Rohit Sharma | Winning captain : I think it was pleasing how we played the game. The conditions were not easy but we got to a good score. A lot of thought went in on how we batted and it was pleasing to see. The pitch was quite slow which our bowlers used to their advantage. I thought 190 was a good score, but with the kind of batting that WI have, no score is good. We played good cricket to get the win today. The batters were really smart and the bowlers bowled in pairs to get wickets. It put the brakes on their scoring. We do understand Avesh's talent. Anyone can have one or two bad games, but we want to keep his skills in mind. We want to give boys enough game time in the middle. He used the conditions and his height really well, which was great to see. I would also like to thank all the people who came in; I know it is hot and it isn't easy to sit out there and watch the game. There's another day to go.

Avesh Khan | MoM : I feel really good because I didn't do well in the last two games. I just focussed on my strengths today, bowling the hard lengths. My coaches and my captain told me that they were backing me. They told me to bounce back and backed me a lot. I am focussing on the next match that is left now. The ball was stopping a bit in the wicket and so I was just mixing my slower deliveries with the hard lengths, which gave me the results. This ground feels like India only, it feels like home. Happy that the crowd came to see us.

Nicholas Pooran | Losing captain : We know they got off to a flying start, but I was happy with the way our guys came back. Unfortunately we didn't get a partnership, it was a par score. Not ideal to get run out, it changed the game. There was some miscommunication. But the other guys could have put their hands up and taken us over the line. Akeal was brilliant with the ball. The others too need to find their rhythm and find the game. But having said that, congratulations to India. As a unit we want to win games and tomorrow is an opportunity to take it. It give other guys an opportunity to come in. It is all about building up to that World Cup and finding that balance.

14:53 Local Time, 18:53 GMT, 00:23 IST: Quite the no contest this. There was a point in the chase when Nicholas Pooran went nuts in the powerplay, going after Axar Patel to smack him for three sixes and a four in an over. It was game on. The pitch wasn't tough, the boundaries were small, and he was in the mood. Alas, in a quest for a needless single, he was sold down the river just as needlessly. And what a shame that was. The rest of the West Indian innings just collapsed after that. Nobody got going, and India's seamers - Avesh Khan and Arshdeep Singh - were too hot to handle. Arshdeep, in particular, with his left-arm angle and his reversing yorkers, has given India another dimension, and another headache to deal with when Bumrah and Harshal return. West Indies have bigger headaches. They are still to find a template to play T20s. Okay, here come the presentations ..

Arshdeep Singh to Obed McCoy, out Bowled!! 3-1 completed. And it's through some absolute domination. Much like this delivery -- full, tailing in late, going under the batswing, and uprooting leg-stump. Obed McCoy b Arshdeep Singh 2(8)

Arshdeep Singh to Obed McCoy, THATS OUT!! Bowled!!

Hooda to Alzarri Joseph, no run, a quiet, defensive, defeat-accepting punch, to point

Hooda to Obed McCoy, 1 run, another leg-cleared heave, outside-edging it without control, wide of short third man

Hooda to Obed McCoy, no run, a massive, mega slog. Alas, without connection

Hooda to Alzarri Joseph, 1 run, shuffles across and steers it to deep point

Hooda to Obed McCoy, 1 run, rocks back in his crease and muscles it down to long-off

Hooda to Alzarri Joseph, 1 run, spinning back in off a good length on off, punched through mid-wicket

Deepak Hooda, right-arm off break, comes into the attack

Arshdeep Singh to Obed McCoy, no run, a quick low full toss. Jabbed back, typically #11 like

Arshdeep Singh to Obed McCoy, no run, yorker, just outside off, holding its line this time around. McCoy drives and misses

Arshdeep Singh to Obed McCoy, no run, WI review an LBW: Another inswinging yorker, traps McCoy in his crease, on his toes, oh, and despite it being given on the field, ball-tracking shows the impact to be well down leg . Singh wasn't even celebrating, and wasn't letting anyone else celebrate either, signalling it to be going down

Arshdeep Singh to Obed McCoy, no run, low dipping full toss on off, squeezed out to point

Obed McCoy, left handed bat, comes to the crease

Arshdeep Singh to Drakes, out Bowled!! Inswinging, reversing yorker, and Arshdeep continues sealing his World T20 spot. He's mastering this art of getting the ball to tail back in late and dip right in the blockhole. It also helps matters that Drakes plays down the wrong line entirely, with the ball smashing into the base of middle. Drakes b Arshdeep Singh 5(7) [4s-1]

J’can teenager in West Indies squad for Pakistan tour

ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC) — Teenage Jamaica Women’s pacer Kate Wilmott was the only newcomer named in a West Indies 15-member squad for an eight-match, white-ball series against hosts Pakistan to be contested between April 18 and May 3.

At the same time, evergreen compatriot Chedean Nation and burly St Lucia and Windward Islands Women’s left-arm spin bowling all-rounder Qiana Joseph earned recalls to the squad, which will play three One-day and five Twenty20 Internationals against the hosts.

Lead selector Ann Browne-John said Wilmott, as well as Nation and Joseph were rewarded for creditable performances in the West Indies Women’s Super50 Cup and Twenty20 Blaze that were contested over the past month in St Kitts.

“The return of experienced player Chedean Nation will strengthen the batting, and 19-year-old fast bowler Kate Wilmott will be making her [first appearance],” Browne-John said in a CWI news release.

“The players have just completed the regional tournament where some of the experienced players had encouraging performances, and it is hoped this will continue into the Pakistan series.”

Wilmott ended with only five wickets at 20 runs apiece in the Super50 and took only one wicket at 71 in the T20 Blaze for double-crown champions Jamaica Women, but it is clear she was selected based on talent and the selectors are trying to continue to build the fast-bowling stocks of the team.

Nation, 37, made 192 runs — the second highest aggregate — in the Super50, averaging exactly 48, and hitting two half-centuries, and gathered 66 runs at 16.50 and bagged six wickets at 13.16 with her medium-fast bowling in the T20s for the Jamaicans.

Joseph, 23, bagged eight wickets at 16.25 in the Super50 Cup, and made 98 runs, including a top score of 56, and took three wickets at 22.33 in the T20s for the Windwards.

Several familiar faces fill in the rest of the squad, which will be led again by world-rated Barbadian all-rounder Hayley Matthews, although she missed both regional tournaments because of playing commitments elsewhere.

They include Guyana captain and wicketkeeper-batsman Shemaine Campbelle, who will be deputy to Matthews, successful Jamaica captain and former West Indies Women’s captain Stafanie Taylor, and Windwards captain and leg-spinner Afy Fletcher — all of whom were among the leading performers in the tournaments.

Both white-ball series will be crucial to the West Indies Women because the ODIs will be part of the ICC Women’s Championship, which results in direct qualification for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup next year in India, and the T20Is will be preparation for ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in September-October in Bangladesh.

“The upcoming series against Pakistan is extremely important for the team as they return to international competition after almost six months,” Browne-John added. “The last series being against Australia.

“Apart from the three ODIs, the team will get some much-needed T20 matches as they prepare to participate in the T20 World Cup later this year.”

West Indies Women will assemble from 6 April in Dubai for a one-week training camp before travelling on April 14 to Pakistan for the matches.

Squad — Hayley Matthews (captain), Shemaine Campbelle (vice-captain), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shamilia Connell, Afy Fletcher, Cherry Ann Fraser, Jannillea Glasgow, Chinelle Henry, Zaida James, Qiana Joseph, Chedean Nation, Karishma Ramharack, Stafanie Taylor, Rashada Williams, Kate Wilmott.
