The best places to go glamping in India
By Maahi Shah
Escaping the din of city life to be in the heart of wilderness sounds romantic and adventurous. However, it demands a certain degree of roughing it out. For those looking for that being-one-with-nature feeling but are not too keen on tenting and backpacking your way through your next holiday, fret not. From tents kitted with every amenity you need (including warm ponchos and a robe) to stargazing within the comforts and warmth of a geodesic dome, these are the best places to go glamping in India. Take your pick.
TUTC Sawai Shivir Ranthambore
Sawai Shivir Ranthambore offers an ideal amalgamation of wildlife exploration, relaxation and culinary indulgence. Nestled amidst farmlands and wheat fields, the 16-acre property offers various experiences such as a spa, bonfire, stargazing sessions and more. Guests can choose from two categories —the luxury suite tent and the presidential suite tent. The tents have been furnished with bookshelves, sculptures and artworks. They have both, air conditioning and heating facilities, glass-walled shower cubicles with rain showers and massage jets, spacious wardrobes, and robes and ponchos to keep warm. The property is a 10-minute drive from the national park, where you can explore the wilderness with an in-house naturalist. Operating season: 1 October-30 June Best season to visit: October-March Tariff: Doubles from Rs95,000*. Website Tariff includes accommodation, all meals, tea, coffee and soft beverages served in the camp restaurant, and butler service on a shared basis.
Big Dipper, Himachal Pradesh
Picture this: stargazing into the Milky Way with your naked eye from the comfort of a geodesic dome at 9,000 feet above sea level. SaffronStays’ newest is the Big Dipper, a chic glamping destination set amidst the Bir and Barot Valley in Himachal Pradesh. The pet-friendly property, designed in the shape of the ‘Big Dipper’ constellation offers two categories of glamps: Morels, which can accommodate up to three people and Fiddleheads, which is a family suite that can accommodate four people. Ethereal views are combined with various experiences such as a bonfire, a meditation zone, a stargazing spot and activities such as paragliding, hiking, yoga, art therapy, cycling and pottery. Besides the cafe is an octagon-shaped common area consisting of indoor and outdoor space with a bar and BBQ spot, perfect for hosting intimate gatherings. Operating season: All year round Best season to visit: Although the property is an all-weather glamping site, the best month to visit are from March-June and September-November Tariff: Doubles from Rs10,000*. Website . All experiences are chargeable and guests have to pay Rs 500* per pet.
Tara Mountain Sarai, Ladakh
Nestled in the Zanskar Valley of Ladakh, where Tsarap and Kargyak rivers converge, is Tara Mountain Sarai, a boutique glamping site. The five luxury tents are furnished with heavy sal wood beds, layered with fluffy blankets to keep warm (even during the summers, temperatures can fall below 10 degrees), a mini bar, snuggler chairs and side tables. The bathroom has running hot and cold water—a definite luxury in the one-home village the property is situated in. You can choose from a range of experiences such as mountain biking, yoga, and even cooking classes by the in-house chef. The farm at the property offers fresh and organic farm-to-table meals featuring local dishes like thukpa, momos, chutagi and other Indian dishes such as parathas and kebabs. The open courtyard overlooking the mountains makes for the perfect space for a BBQ night. Operating season: The camp is only open through summer (April-July) Best season to visit: April-July Tariff: Doubles from Rs10,000* (Exclusive of taxes). Website . Getting there: The 446-km drive from Leh to Khangsar via Kargil takes about 16 hours. You can spend the night at Rangdum or Padum to ease your journey. Ease your journey with a night halt at Rangdum or Padum. The shortest drive to Khangsar, 180km, is from Manali through the Atal Tunnel. - Prasad Ramammurthy
Elsewhere, Goa
Elsewhere was an old Portuguese home converted into a boutique property offering guests a breathtaking view of the beach and ocean from its many beach houses. Three tents—sharing the same beach as Elsewhere’s beach houses—face a creek parallel to the sea and accommodate two. The tents are equipped with a minibar and other basic but necessary amenities such as a minibar, air-conditioning and running hot water. The four beach houses operate much like a boutique hotel. All meals are served at the dining shack; the menu comprises traditional Goan, Indian and European cuisines. You can rise early for a yoga session at the property’s yoga shala or pamper yourself with a rejuvenating massage from their in-house massage therapists. Operating season: 15 October-15 May Best season to visit: December-February Tariff: Doubles from Rs9,000* (Exclusive of Taxes). Website Good to know: The road leading up to the property ends about 30 metres from the creek so there is a short walk through a couple of village houses, across a bamboo bridge and along a sandy track - so sensible shoes are a must. Please note that the bridge, although strong and sturdy, is constructed from bamboo and around 60 metres long and may be a little daunting for those nervous of heights.
