Land of the Rising Sun

Welcome to Japan! This is a land of intriguing contradictions. Japan is an archipelago made up of more than 6,800 islands with three quarters of the land being either forest or mountains, leaving little for residential, industrial, or farming areas. Yet it is densely populated for its size. Its leaders have ranged from the samurai to the shogun to the emperor. Its highest point – Mt. Fuji – is beautiful and sacred, as are its many temples and shrines. Its capital city – Tokyo – is a bustling metropolis containing anything one might desire, from food to entertainment to art and culture. Kyoto is filled with serene religious buildings and glorious gardens. A Japan trip awaits with open arms!

Japan ms1

Until the 19th century, Tokyo was known as Edo. It started out as a fishing village but grew to become the seat of a feudal government in the early 17th century. Emperor Meiji moved the capital from Kyoto to Edo in 1868 and renamed it Tokyo, or “Eastern Capital.” By then it had become one of the world’s most populous cities. After World War II it was completely rebuilt. Today, Tokyo is more than just a large city – it is a metropolis with 23 wards. Learn all about the city’s fascinating history and culture through artwork and antiques in Tokyo’s National Museum. Travelers dive even deeper into Tokyo’s ancient roots with a visit to the Zojoji Temple, the center of Japanese Buddhism. From the Ginza district to the Sumida River there’s something for everyone in Tokyo.

Japan ms2

Kyoto was home to the emperor from 794 to 1868. It was Japan’s political and cultural center for 1,100 years, until the capital was moved to Tokyo. Kyoto was largely spared from damaging air raids of World War II and numerous temples, shrines, castles, and palaces are still standing today. Among them is the Golden Pavilion, a Zen temple whose top two stories are completely covered in gold leaf. Once the lavish retirement home of a shogun (military dictator), it was converted to a Zen temple in the 1400s. It has survived wars, been rebuilt after fires, and still stands as an impressive piece of historic architecture. Nijo Castle, another impressive monument, was built in 1603 as the residence of Tokugawa leyasu – the first shogun of the Edo Period. Kyoto is also well-known for Gion – its most famous Geisha district where you may be lucky enough to see a woman dressed in full, traditional geisha regalia.

Japan ms3

Hiroshima will forever be remembered for the devastating event of August 6, 1945: the dropping of the first atomic bomb. Nearly everything within a mile of where the bomb fell was destroyed, and some 80,000 people perished. There were predictions that the city would no longer be habitable. Today, Hiroshima has been rebuilt and a large park was constructed, containing several memorials to the victims. The Peace Memorial Museum focuses on the dropping of the bomb and its aftermath; the Atomic Bomb Dome was one of the few buildings to remain standing afterward; and the Memorial Cenotaph is an arched tomb for those who died. Also worth a visit is Hiroshima Castle. Originally built in 1589, it was five stories tall and was surrounded by a moat. It was destroyed in 1945, rebuilt in 1958, and is now a museum featuring Samurai culture.

Japan ms4

Takayama means “tall mountain,” and is a city in the mountainous Hida region. During the feudal ages, it became known for its high-quality timber and skilled carpenters. Yet it was kept fairly isolated due to the surrounding mountains. Today it is known for its well-preserved old town. The Hida-Kokubunji Temple is the oldest structure, originally built in 746. It features a huge ginko tree, said to be 1,200 years old, and a three-storied pagoda. The Hida no Sato Folk Village, with its traditional wooden farm houses, is an open-air museum. There are also two morning markets, or Asaichi, held on a daily basis, as well as sake breweries. It is the perfect place for a walk.

Destination Must-Do's

Japan md1

Japanese Cuisine:

No trip to Japan would be complete without experiencing its flavorful dishes. A bowl of gohan, or cooked rice, is a central part of Japanese meals. From there we go to sushi, famous both outside of and inside Japan. Sushi is made from cold boiled rice, moistened by vinegar and typically combined with seafood and vegetables. Sashimi is thinly sliced raw food – most often seafood. (Japan is an island, after all.) The most popular noodles are soba (buckwheat flour), udon (wheat flour), and ramen, a noodle soup dish. Tempura is lightly battered, deep-fried seafood and vegetables. Yakatori refers to grilled chicken skewers you can try at a yakitori-ya. Be sure to enjoy green tea with your meal, as the Japanese do.

Japan md2

The Tokyo Skytree:

The Tokyo Skytree is the perfect way to get a panoramic view of the city and beyond. A television broadcasting tower, this Tokyo landmark is almost 1,200 feet high and is the tallest structure in Japan. A large shopping complex and an aquarium are at its base, but it’s the two observation decks that warrant a visit. Head to the “world’s highest skywalk” for views that will take your breath away!

Japan md3

Temples and Shrines:

Temples and shrines are found all over Japan, with most municipalities having at least one temple. (Kyoto has 1,200.) Temples are Buddhist places of worship, and they store and display sacred objects. They typically consist of a main hall, a lecture hall, a pagoda, gates, bells, and a cemetery. Some were monasteries in the past, and some still are. Shrines are Shinto places of worship. They are the dwellings of the kami, or Shinto gods. Sacred objects are stored in the innermost chamber, and are not to be seen by anyone. People visit shrines to pay respect to the kami, or to pray for good fortune. The approach to the shrine is marked by Torii gates; the komainu, a pair of guardian dogs or lions, is found on each side of the shrine’s entrance.

Japan md4

Hakone has been a hot springs resort for centuries. There are more than a dozen hot springs, with Yumoto being the most famous. There is much natural beauty to be appreciated here. Lake Ashinoko, or Lake Ashi, was formed in a volcanic caldera after an eruption 3,000 years ago; it is the perfect place for a scenic boat ride with views of Mt. Fuji. The Hakone Shrine, on the shores of Lake Ashi, is Hakone’s most famous Shinto shrine. Three striking Torii gates mark the approach to the shrine. Odawaro Castle is the closest castle to Tokyo, some 60 miles away. Originally built in the 15th century, it has been rebuilt twice since then. Hakone remains a popular destination for the Japanese and tourists alike.

Our guide, Taka was there for us everyday making sure we were all enjoying the local sights and experiences according to our individual interests and those of the group. He was very organized with tickets for trains, buses and the subway, keeping track of all 15 of us and never losing anyone. When we were shopping he helped us find what we were looking for. My granddaughter and I returned home feeling we truly experienced the beauty and life of the country and it’s people.

Simply Japan Tour

Simply Japan

Very busy tour covering different parts of Japan. Great introduction to the country. The hotels were all of good quality and well located. The timing of the tour meant that the free day in Tokyo was when all the museums were shut and the day in Matsumoto was also when the shops in the old part of town were closed. It would be nice to shift the timing by a day to avoid this. The Tour Leader was a Tour Leader not a Tour Guide. She was brilliant at looking after us and getting us around but there were times it would have been good to have a Tour Guide who could give us more cultural information. Overall it was a great and varied introduction to Japan and I hope to return.

Japan Discovered (No. 1 Best Selling Tour) Tour

Japan Discovered (No. 1 Best Selling Tour)

Our trip to Japan was long awaited and researched. Tourradar did not disappoint. There were numerous different tours of Japan to choose from, and after much debate we chose the Japan discovered 14 day cultural tour. Booking was easy and efficient and the tour company which ran our individual tour, Unique Japan Limited were amazing. Lots of pre trip information, an app to download with a summary, full itinerary, travel documents, destination documents, weather, maps and a messaging portal plus extra information on each day of the itinerary about our accommodation and things to do during free time. We had a great group of 11 plus our lovely tour guide Mika who navigated us around the jam packed itinerary effortlessly. We then had specialist guides at each destination who had in depth local knowledge. The places we went to and activities we undertook were great, highlights being the tea ceremony at Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa, Maiko meet and greet in Kyoto, washi paper and soba noodle making and the snow monkeys in Nagano. We were lucky enough to have clear skies on our approach to Tokyo so got stunning photos of Mt Fuji from the air. Luck smiled on us again with clear skies on the day we visited Hakone, so more stunning photos of the mountain then too! Would thoroughly recommend both companies and definitely encourage anyone to visit Japan. Far from being a country ticking off exercise, we are now planning to return and explore further.

If you are looking to see the absolute raw side of Japanese culture and countryside with lots of activities and walking, then this is the best tour I can recommend. Yes we saw the highlights but we also got to see places that I would have never expected to see in Japan. The Kumano Kodo region was spectacular. You will spend your days walking the pilgrims once done by the Emperors and officials in Japan ending in traditional ryokans and guesthouses (minishiku's) with amazing traditional meals. Be sure to try the onsens too. Highly recommend this tour for anyone adventurous and looking for something very different from their trip to Japan.

What people love about 2 week japan tours.

The 14 day tour of Japan with One Life Adventures, has been without a second of doubt, one of (if not the) best tour I have ever had the immense pleasure of being a part of. And If you are luck enough to have Jonny as your tour guide you will be in for a world of fun, laughter, discovery and an overall amazing time. There are moments on this tour where you will be awe-struck with wonder and amazement at some of the country's rich and unique architecture and culture, one thing I'd like to advise other travellers on, is bring money for spending in Tokyo and be prepared to carry rubbish with you until you find the gift from the gods that is the Japanese rubbish bins. If all of this sounds good to you, I invite you woth open arms to this tour of a life time..... OneLife
What an adventure of a lifetime! Kohei Nishido’s genuinely kind, responsive, flexible, and insightful nature made our travel encounters with Japan profoundly life changing. Our deepest gratitude to all our fellow traveler's who also gave us memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you for celebrating our Wedding Anniversary with us!

"Japan is one of the most captivating places on earth, where you can go from Tokyo's flashy streets to the snowy peak of Mount Fuji or a traditional ryokan in a day."

Travel Director

Admire the snow-capped Mount Fuji

See the towering peak of Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan and a UNESCO-listed site. We’ll take you up to the 5th station of Mount Fuji, a spectacular vantage point at 7,545 feet, before taking a ride on the Kachikachiyama Ropeway with views of Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi.

Take a high-speed bullet train to Kyoto

Board the high-speed bullet train to Kyoto, the former capital of Japan and the ancient epicentre of Japanese culture. After whizzing through the country, you’ll meet the locals at a traditional ryokan and learn about traditional Japanese customs, then explore the Gion District and glittering Kinkakuji Temple, the symbol of Kyoto.

Experience a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony

We’ll introduce you to a professional Tea Master who has spent many years learning the craft of the tea ceremony. You’ll learn about the history of Japanese tea making, and watch how the matcha is prepared with a bamboo whisk. You’ll even have a go at making (and tasting) your own tea.

Admire Osaka from the Floating Garden Observatory

The Floating Garden Observatory is an open-air viewing platform, stretching between the two towers of the Umeda Sky Building. We’ll take you to the top of the 567-foot buildings for panoramic views over Osaka, including the city’s dazzling rivers, bridges and soaring skyscrapers.

Wander through Ameyoko Street Market

With nearly 200 shops selling everything from fresh fish and spices to clothing and bags, you can spend hours roaming through Ameyoko Street Market. Located in Tokyo along the Yamanote Line tracks, it was once a black market selling American goods and sweets after WWII, when sugar was hard to find.

Our top 5 things to do in Japan

Our Japan tours take you from the dizzying heights of Mount Fuji and the bustle of the Ameyoko Market, to the tranquility of a Japanese tea ceremony.

Tokyo National Museum

The largest and oldest museum in Japan, Tokyo National Museum holds one of the world’s best collections of art and archaeological artefacts from Asia. There are over 110,000 items, including 87 National Treasures of Japan, and you can find everything from art along the Silk Road to medieval Japanese art.

Kotokuin Temple

Located in the city of Kamakuru, the Kotokuin Temple is a Japanese Buddhist temple of the Jodo sect. It’s home to the ‘Great Buddha’ or ‘Daibutsu’, a 37-foot bronze statue of Amida Buddha, constructed in 1252. The towering statue is a National Treasure and one of the most iconic sights in Japan.

Sensoji Buddhist Temple

One of the most famous temples in Japan, the Sensoji Buddhist Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo. It was originally built in 628 but was rebuilt after being destroyed in WWII. Today, you’ll find a beautiful five-storey pagoda, woven with incense and crimson eaves.

Best museums in Japan

A Japan tour package with Trafalgar takes you through the country’s top museums, from one of the world’s best collections of Asian art, to the ornate temples of Tokyo.

Although sushi is now a popular dish around the world, you’ve never really tried it until you’ve eaten the best in Japan. Our Local Specialists will help you navigate the endless varieties of this iconic dish, from raw vegetables to fresh fish wrapped in rice and seaweed.

Hida beef comes from a Japanese breed of black-haired cattle raised in the fresh air and pure water of Gifu Prefecture. Hailed as the best beef in Japan, we’ll take you to the top restaurants to try one of the beautifully tender and marbled Hida beef steaks.

A beloved dish found all over the country, ramen is a delicious Japanese noodle soup. Each region has a different variation and it usually involves a tasty pork or chicken broth, seasoned with plenty of rich flavors like miso, soy sauce and spring onions.

Best food in Japan

A Japan group tour with Trafalgar will have you indulging in the country’s fantastic cuisine, from fresh sushi to piping hot ramen.

What to pack for Japan

People packing for a tour

Adaptor plug

In Japan, the standard voltage is 100 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type A and B. The standard frequency is 50 / 60 Hz.

Comfortable sandals

Japanese culture requires you to take off your shoes when entering traditional restaurants, temples and ryokans. Bring a comfortable pair of sandals so you can easily slip them off all day.

Japanese phrasebook

Learning a few Japanese phrases will help you connect with the friendly Japanese locals, and offers the chance for some rewarding interactions.

Most shops and restaurants in Japan primarily accept cash, so it’s best to come prepared with some Japanese yen for your trip.

Versatile clothing

Japan’s weather ranges hot and humid to freezing cold, with mild springs in between. Pack versatile layers to be prepared for all conditions on your Japan holiday.

Osaka Castle + Noh Traditions

Enjoy a tour of Osakajo ; surrounded by stone walls, moats and landscaped grounds graced with a profusion of Cherry Blossom trees, this is one of Japan’s most impressive Shogun castles! Tracing its history to 1583, it’s a marvelous place to begin your foray into Japan’s rich and dramatic history. Then at the nearly century-old Yamamoto Theater, our exclusive workshop reveals the rich traditions of Japan’s Noh Theater, an ancient art from of music and drama that has been performed since the 14 th century.   With some free time this afternoon, you can take advantage of our luxury hotel’s city-center location to experience more of Osaka at your own pace. A Taste of Osaka + On to Hiroshima

Granvia Hotel - Hiroshima, Japan

In the heart of this modern metropolis, you’ll feel like you’ve gone back centuries when you enter Hozenji Temple, built in 1637. Splash some water on the small Buddha statue that you’ll find inside; locals believe that this simple act will bring a bit of good luck. Indeed, visitors have been doing this for centuries and the result is that the statue is now covered entirely in bright green moss!   Then visit the Kamigata Ukiyoe Museum to see a marvelous collection of woodblock prints from the Edo era. There are some 50 rare and priceless works on display, many of them depicting the great Kabuki actors of the era. For lunch, savor authentic Osaka cuisine as you explore with our in-the-know guide along Dotonbori Street, famed for its many eateries. Then head to the station where you’ll board the world-famous Bullet Train for Hiroshima. On arrival, you’ll be escorted to the 5-star Granvia Hiroshima Hotel .  Meals B+L

Hiroshima + Miyajima Island

Founded in 1589, Hiroshima is one of Japan’s most historic cities. In the 20th century, of course, it entered the annals of history as the first city to be hit with an atomic bomb, a cataclysmic event that shaped our generation. Nearly 70% of the city was completely destroyed, but one of the few surviving structures was a domed building close to the detonation site. Today, this architectural shell stands in Peace Memorial Park c close to the Peace Memorial Museum and the Memorial Cenotaph for Atomic Bomb Victims. Visiting these sites with our compassionate Japanese guide is a sobering yet inspiring experience – a reminder of the devastation of war and the enduring spirit of humankind.   Then cross the lovely, island-dotted Inland Sea to Miyajima Island to visit the incomparable Itsukushima Shrine c ; established in the 6 th century, much of its present-day architecture dates to the 12th century, and it remains a spectacular sight. Built on piers over the bay, the shrine and its magnificent red Torii gate appear to float over the tranquil waters during high tide. In the afternoon, our hands-on cultural experience is a fun way to learn about Japanese calligraphy, the ancient rituals of the Tea Ceremony, and even the proper way to don a kimono!  Meals B

Hiroshima Traditions + Embark our Luxury Ship, guntû

guntû - Cruising the Seto Inland Sea

Hiroshima’s Saijo district is well-known among sake connoisseurs worldwide, and is the reason why the city is known as Sake Town. There are no fewer than eight historic breweries here and the neighborhood is also home to the well-respected National Research Institute of Sake Brewing. It’s a lively and colorful district and this morning’s guided stroll is a delightful way to experience and learn about Japan’s favorite brew. Finish your morning exploring the charming port of Takehara, famed for its remarkable ensemble of finely preserved Edo-era buildings.   Then continue to the Bella Vista Marina where our elegant vessel awaits. Board guntû and settle in to your refined terrace site as we begin our voyage into the springtime landscapes of the Seto Inland Sea.  Meals B+L+D   (Cruise itinerary subject to change based on local conditions)

Cruising the Seto Inland Sea

A wondrous day unfolds as we step ashore on a few of the 3,000 islands that dot the beautiful Inland Sea – at the peak of their Cherry Blossom glory. You might, for example, explore Inujima; diminutive and easily explored on foot, this island was a feudal-era industrial powerhouse, producing granite blocks that were used to construct some of Japan’s most famous Shogun castles. In the early 1900’s, it was home to a copper refinery. These industrial relics can still be seen, and the ruins of their old brick walls and crumbling smokestacks give Inujima a uniquely resonant ambiance. Today the island is home to a small rural village, several renowned art galleries and the innovative Inujima Seirensho Art Museum. Today you might also sip green tea as you watch a master craft wagashi - colorful, delicate confections made of rice flour and sweet bean paste. Back on board our luxury ship, sit down to delightful meals, prepared-to-order with locally sourced ingredients including the day’s catch. Traditional Japanese cuisine, the finest sushi, and Western-style dishes are attentive served in tranquil and elegant spaces with views of the passing scenery.   (Cruise itinerary subject to change based on local conditions)

Kurashiki + On to Okayama

Granvia Hotel - Okayama, Japan

Delight in a leisurely morning of cruising! Take in the views from your private terrace or relax in your suite as you gaze at the scenery through floor-to-ceiling windows. Or retreat to the Top Deck where you can experience the sublime views from the Engawa , a uniquely Japanese-style veranda found in temples and traditional homes.   Upon reaching our private marina in the late morning, you’ll step off guntû and continue to the historic city of Kurashiki. With picturesque tree-lined canals dating back to the Edo era, it’s easy to imagine Kurashiki centuries ago when it was an important rice distribution center. With their distinctive black-glazed ceramic tile roofs and white-washed walls, many of the town’s centuries-old rice storehouses are now home to museums, galleries and cafes. A guided canal cruise is the perfect way to experience Kurashiki’s unique heritage and present-day charm. After sightseeing, continue to Okayama and check in to the Granvia Okayama Hotel .  Meals B+L

Art of Naoshima Island

Spend the day with your engaging guided on this lovely forested island. Its rugged coasts, hidden beaches and forested hills are masterpieces of nature, but here they are merely the backdrop for remarkable human-made works, from the striking architecture of Pritzker Prize Laureate Tadao Ando to paintings and sculptures by Japanese and international artists. See five paintings from Monet’s tranquil Water Lilies series, amazingly displayed in a subterranean gallery, yet gloriously bathed in abundant natural light.   Sit down to lunch amidst the contemporary art works on display at Benesse House , with views of the Inland Sea. Then experience one of Naoshima’s most unusual works; Still in-progress, the Art House Project is a unique undertaking that will convert seven former island homes into organic works that weave together the artists’ visions with the history and memories of these buildings and their former inhabitants. Late in the day, you’ll board the ferry back to Honshu Island and return to the Granvia Okayama Hotel where you’ll have time to refresh before dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in Okayama.  Meals B+L+D

From Okayama to Kyoto

The Thousand - Kyoto, Japan

After breakfast and check-out, start your day with a guided tour of Okayama Castle, also known as “crow castle” because of its distinctive black-stone exterior and black-glazed tile roofs – soaring six stories above the tree tops. Much of the original 16 th -century castle was destroyed during World War II, but carefully reconstructed in the 1960’s.  Just across the Asahi River, you’ll tour Korakuen Garden. Created by a feudal lord in 1687 for his private use, it was opened to the public in 1884 and is now revered as one of Japan’s three finest landscaped gardens. Along with the nearby grounds of Okayama Castle, there are approximately 500 cherry trees which, at this time of year, should be sheathed in delicate pink Sakura blossoms!   At midday, we’ll take you to the rail station to board the Bullet Train for Kyoto. On arrival, you’ll be escorted to The Thousand , our brand new luxury hotel in the heart of this revered city. Enjoy lunch and settle in to your room. The balance of this day is yours to relax, enjoy and explore as you wish.  Meals B+L

Exploring Kyoto

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and then join your guide to explore this classic city, starting with Sanjusangendo Temple. Founded in the 12 th century, this elegant structure – the longest wooden building in Japan – is famous for its 1,001 delicately carved images of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. After lunch, your sightseeing continues at Nijo Castle c where you can try to walk in stealth across the Nightingale Floor – ingeniously designed ago to chirp in warming if would-be assassins penetrated the Shogun’s inner chambers. Then visit Kinkaku-ji Temple c , the oft-photographed golden pavilion that shimmers in its tranquil setting surrounded by pine forests on the edge of a quiet pond. End your tour with a guided stroll in Kyoto’s Gion district where Geisha and Kabuki traditions began long ago. With stories and insight from your guide, it’s a delightful way to learn about some of Japan’s most famous cultural traditions.  Meals B+L

With its forested hills and groves of blossoming cherry trees, Arashiyama is a riverside district that has been a popular destination since the Heian Period when nobles would come to enjoy its natural beauty. Exploring this morning in traditional rickshaws is a perfectly pleasant way to see the sites – from the picturesque Togetsukyo Bridge and ethereal Sagano Bamboo Forest to several important shrines and temples. Built by the chief disciple of the great haiku master Matsuo Basho, Rakushisha is a rustic yet elegant thatch-roof hut set in the edge of a forest. On the grounds are stone tablets inscribed with famous haiku poems while lovely ink-brushed poems grace the interior walls.   You’ll also visit Tenryuji Temple c , founded in the 14 th century and renowned for its beautiful garden; created by the famed garden designer Muso Soseki, it has survived the centuries in its original form. Refresh and recharge with traditional matcha green tea here at Tenryuji before a guided stroll to experience more of Arashiyama’s charms. You’ll have free time this afternoon to relax and explore as you wish. This evening’s farewell dinner includes an enchanting dance and music performance by Maiko – young women learning to become Geisha.  Meals B+D

Traditional Taiko Drumming

A Hands-On Lesson

Gero Onsen Yunoshimakan

Tradition meets innovation.

Built on the slopes of Mt. Yunoshima (Mt. Gero) in 1931, Yunoshimakan's buildings and gardens were designed to weave through the groves of cedar and cypress trees said to be hundreds of years old as a sign of respect for the natural beauty of the surrounding area. Combining traditional Japanese-style architecture in its main building and annex, with its guest rooms built and designed in sukiya-zukuri style, and Western-influences in its entertainment building, Yunoshimakan is the perfect blend of tradition and innovation.

Cruise Lake Ashi

Lake ashi, in mt. fuji's shadow.

Sometimes known as Hakone Lake or Ashinoko Lake, Japan's Lake Ashi is a picturesque crater lake set on the caldera of volcanic Mt. Hakone on the island of Honshu. The lake is famous not only for the sight of Mt. Fuji, Japan's tallest peak, looming over it, but for the many volcanically heated hot springs and historic sites along its shores. Foremost among these is Hakone Shrine in the lakeside town of Hakone, a Shinto shrine that has been frequently visited by samurai, shogun and pilgrims since the 17th century. Your cruise along Lake Ashi's sparkling waters offers great views of such sites and, weather permitting, iconic Mt. Fuji in the distance.

The opportunities to experience the 'Onsen', wear a Yukata and stay one night in a traditional Japanese hotel were not to be missed.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact a consulate or embassy of Japan to determine what travel documentation is required.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

IMPORTANT: An overnight bag for your stay at the Tobira Onsen on Day 5 should be packed including all essential clothing and personal care items as the balance of the luggage will be transported by luggage truck and there will be no access to the remainder of your luggage. A small bag with wheels that you can comfortably manage on your own without assistance is strongly suggested.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally,   no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Japan. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking  here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally , please contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries on the itinerary to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

To enjoy this active tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.  We recommend that you pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in to appreciate fully what Japan has to offer.

Some sites have limited motor coach access and often involve walking some distance from the motor coach parking to the site itself. Due to the ancient nature of several of the sites you will visit, stairs, walkways and garden paths are sometimes uneven, irregular, steep and/or slippery. If you join us for the visit to the fish market, you should be aware that there are crowds of people and fast-moving carts and forklifts. Quite often, you will be asked to remove your shoes to gain entry into the temples, shrines and historical residences along your journey.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The weather throughout the Japan's four main islands is generally temperate, with four distinct seasons. The weather can get very hot during the summer months, particularly in the South. May, June and July are the wettest months, and June, July and August are hotter and more humid.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website,  noaa.gov , by clicking  here .

What To Pack

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.  We recommend that you pack lightly for your trip to Japan, as there is very little room for luggage aboard the trains and you will pack an overnight bag for Day 5. The balance of your luggage will be transported by luggage truck and there will be no access to the remainder of your luggage for those two nights. A small bag with wheels that you can comfortably manage on your own without assistance is strongly suggested.

We recommend that you dress smartly. Jeans and capri pants are suitable for casual dining and sightseeing. However, shorts are rarely seen outside of hiking or sport venues, unless they are longer-length Bermuda shorts. Most women wear cropped length pants and they do not, as a rule, wear t-shirts.

Most wear a conservative top that may be sleeveless but is not low-cut, and many Japanese women wear heels even with casual clothes.

Shoes that are easily removed are essential, as it is customary to remove shoes when entering temples, shrines, private homes and certain restaurants. Clean socks and hosiery are also required to avoid unnecessary embarrassment.

Japan's top French restaurants usually require jackets and ties. The older generation considers it inappropriate for women to wear dresses without hose or tops without sleeves.

Bring packets of pocket-sized tissue and handkerchiefs, as tissue and paper towels are often not found in lavatories.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your journey to Japan:

  • Cotton, cotton/synthetic and linen clothing
  • Light weight shirts, pants, capri pants and dresses
  • Light jacket or sweater
  • Jacket and tie and casually-elegant attire for fine dining
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Shoes that are easy to slip on and off when visiting places of worship
  • White socks (for temple visits where you need to remove your shoes)
  • Hat (a wide brimmed hat is recommended)
  • Collapsible umbrella
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Soap leaves, travel packets of tissues, handkerchiefs and hand sanitizer (toilet tissue and paper towels are not available in many lavatories)
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotel rooms do not have clocks)
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  www.necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

This tiny township has been a port since medieval times, and is characterized by its narrow streets and crowded rows of over 100 houses built with plate walls made from ship planks. The beautiful turquoise water of Shukunegi is the perfect place to enjoy our next unique activity, a leisurely ride in a tarai bune (washtub boat). These tiny oval shaped boats were first used in the mid 1800s by local fishermen to catch abalone and molluscs in the area's narrow, winding coves. Your airport pick-up will meet you at Kansai International Airport (assuming your flight arrives after 8:00 am and before 21:30) and will take you to your hotel in Osaka by public transportation. They will give you an orientation, hand you your transportation tickets, give you your rental pocket internet device, check you in to your hotel, and answer any of your questions. You will be on your own for dinner but your airport pick-up will make a few suggestions. Osaka is a huge city with down to Earth people who are very proud of their cuisine, most notably okonomiyaki (a pancake-based dish containing vegetables, meat, and/or seafood), takoyaki (octopus dumplings), and udon noodles. These dishes are not fancy but are like the people of Osaka, friendly and open. The train from Kansai Airport to Namba Station in Osaka will take about 45 minutes.

japan land and sea tours

Today you will explore Osaka on your own. This city is filled with hidden gems that most tourists have no idea exist like Doguyasuji Street for restaurant owners, Kuromon Ichiba local market street, and Amemura (American Village). We can work on the sightseeing itinerary before you go to Osaka to better tailor your sightseeing plus your personalized tour organizer will contain detailed suggestions.

After breakfast, you will take a Shinkansen bullet train and ferry to Miyajima, which literally means “shrine island”, located in the Seto Inland Sea. It is considered to be a sacred place and it provides a stunning example of the ability of the Japanese people to seamlessly blend architecture with natural beauty. Deer and monkeys wander freely around Miyajima, especially on Mt. Misen, the tallest mountain on the island, where there is a good view of the Seto Sea. Here you will stay in a ryokan inn and be served a seafood kaiseki meal featuring oysters from the local sea. The train from Osaka Station to Miyajimaguchi Port will take approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Hiroshima was the first city to ever experience an atomic bomb that physically destroyed it. The people of Hiroshima, however, rebuilt the city, filling it with charm and history. Hiroshima is also famous for its food, specifically, okonomiyaki which is a must-try inexpensive lunch or dinner. While in Hiroshima you can visit the Peace Museum and Park, Shukkeien Garden, or the Hondori Shopping Arcade. The ferry and train from Miyajima to Hiroshima Station will take approximately 40 minutes.

Today you will take a train to Kurashiki to discover this old merchant town. You will explore the nearby historic district, willow-lined canal area with storehouses preserved since the Edo Period (1600-1868). One of Kurashiki’s most popular attractions is the Ohara Museum of Art. It was founded by Magosaburo Ohara; a Japanese businessman in 1930 and was Japan’s first museum of Western art. The train from Hiroshima Station to Kurashiki Station will take approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Located in the Seto Inland Sea, Shodoshima is considered one of the first islands based on Japanese mythology. The name literally means “small bean island” and today it is known for soybean and olive production. The island one of the venues for the Setouchi Triennale Art Festival so there are modern art displays all over and is a popular setting for movies and TV dramas. Shodoshima is also known for Kankaei Gorge and the monkey park. The train, bus, and ferry from Kurashiki Station to Shodoshima take about 2 hours.

japan land and sea tours

Today you will have free time to explore the island at your pace. Its Mediterranean-like weather makes it a perfect destination for people looking to get out of the city. It is also known for Setouchi Triennale which is a modern art festival that happens every three years. Many of the art is still on permanent display but many have limited access in the winter. Please talk to your Japan Expert to design your stay in Shodoshima more in detail.

After breakfast in Shodoshima, you will head to Takamatsu on Shikoku Island. Takamatsu has long been known as the “Gate to Shikoku” because of its importance as a port city. Although it was an important castle town in the 17th century, it is now a very modern city. While in Takamatsu don’t miss the Ritsurin Koen – an outstanding Japanese-style landscape garden. For lunch we recommend you to have Udon noodles (the city’s specialty). The ferry from Shodoshima to Takamatsu will take approximately 30 minutes.

japan land and sea tours

In the morning you will leave Takamatsu city and head for a part of Japan that few have seen. This unspoiled area is so remote that during the Edo Period (1603 to 1868) criminals would come her to hide from the law. You will spend 2 nights in a ryokan (Japanese inn) where you will be served dinner and breakfast. This is a great time to relax and connect to the quieter side of Japan.

Today your Private Local Guide will pick you up at your ryokan with a private car. Together you will explore the remote valley and enjoy the vine bridges that span the gorge. Due to the flexible nature of your sightseeing, we do not include entry fees or meals while you are with your guide. If you have any specific sights you want to visit with your guide please let us know.

Kyoto, the former imperial capital of Japan, is where the traditional Japanese ‘high arts’ flourished like tea ceremony, calligraphy, poetry, philosophy, and religion. Numerous temples and shrines are located throughout the city and walking along canals, next to traditional wooden houses and through the small streets really gives you an idea of the ancient imperial culture. Kyoto is also famous for its crafts: textile, kimono, and pottery. The train ride from Iya Valley to Kyoto will take about 4 hours.

japan land and sea tours

Your private local guide will meet you in the lobby of your hotel and will show you Kyoto. Your guide will take you to Japan’s most beautiful and historic temples and shrines, and you will walk down ancient streets where Japanese nobles strolled. There is too much to see and do but you want want to focus on Higashiyama to see Kiyomizudera, Gion to see geisha walking to their next appointment or head north to Kinkakuji. Your guide will work with you so you see the sights you are most interested in visiting. We can work on the sightseeing itinerary before you go to Kyoto to better tailor your sightseeing.

japan land and sea tours

Today you will have some free time to discover more in-depth the beauties of Kyoto. If you prefer we can also arrange a day trip to Nara where you could enjoy its large park with deer and of course the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple. Talk to your Japan Expert to design your stay in Kyoto more in detail.

China’s Cities Are Sinking Below Sea Level, Study Finds

Development and groundwater pumping are causing land subsidence and heightening the risks of sea level rise.

A person in a red suit and hat stands in a trench in an empty lot with skyscrapers in the background.

By Delger Erdenesanaa

As China’s cities grow, they are also sinking.

An estimated 16 percent of the country’s major cities are losing more than 10 millimeters of elevation per year and nearly half are losing more than 3 millimeters per year, according to a new study published in the journal Science .

These amounts may seem small, but they accumulate quickly. In 100 years, a quarter of China’s urban coastal land could sit below sea level because of a combination of subsidence and sea level rise, according to the study.

“It’s a national problem,” said Robert Nicholls, a climate scientist and civil engineer at the University of East Anglia who reviewed the paper. Dr. Nicholls added that, to his knowledge, this study is the first to measure subsidence across many urban areas at once using state-of-the-art radar data from satellites.

Subsidence in these cities is caused in part by the sheer weight of buildings and infrastructure, the study found. Pumping water from aquifers underneath the cities also plays a role, as do oil drilling and coal mining, all activities that leave empty space underground where soil and rocks can compact or collapse.

Beijing is among the places in the country sinking the fastest. So is nearby Tianjin, where last year thousands of residents were evacuated from high-rise apartment buildings after the streets outside suddenly split apart. Within these cities, sinking is uneven. When pieces of land next to each other subside at different rates, whatever is built on top of that land is at risk of damage.

Other countries, including the United States , have similar problems.

“Land subsidence is an overlooked problem that almost exists everywhere,” said Manoochehr Shirzaei, a geophysicist at Virginia Tech who has studied subsidence in American coastal cities using similar methods. Dr. Shirzaei also reviewed the new study on Chinese cities by Zurui Ao of South China Normal University, Xiaomei Hu and Shengli Tao of Peking University, and their colleagues.

“I believe the majority of the adaptation strategies that we have, and resiliency plans to combat climate change, are inaccurate, just because they did not include land subsidence,” he said. “It hasn’t been studied the way, for example, sea level rise has been studied.”

The new study was based on satellite radar measurements of how much the ground surface in 82 major cities, accounting for three-quarters of China’s urban population, moved up or down between 2015 and 2022. The researchers compared these measurements to data on potential contributing factors, like the weight of buildings in these cities and changing groundwater levels underneath them.

The researchers also combined their subsidence measurements with projections of sea level rise to figure out which cities might end up below sea level. One caveat with these findings is that they assumed a constant rate of subsidence over the next 100 years, but these rates can change along with human activity.

About 6 percent of land in China’s coastal cities currently has a relative elevation below sea level. If the global average sea level rises by 0.87 meters, or a little less than 3 feet, by 2120 (the higher of two commonly used scenarios considered by the researchers) that proportion could rise to 26 percent, this study found.

Being below sea level doesn’t mean a city is automatically doomed. Much of the Netherlands is below sea level and sinking, but the country has been extensively engineered to prevent flooding in places and to accommodate it in others .

The key to minimizing damage is limiting groundwater extraction, the researchers wrote. Shanghai is already taking this approach and is sinking more slowly than other Chinese cities. In Japan, groundwater management over the years has proved successful at stabilizing subsidence in Tokyo and Osaka.

Some places are even combating subsidence by injecting water into depleted aquifers in a process called managed recharge.

It’s difficult to stop subsidence entirely, Dr. Nicholls said. “You’ve got to live with what’s left.” Mainly, he said, this means adapting to sea level rise in coastal areas; not just the sea level rise caused by climate change, but also the effects of sinking land.

Delger Erdenesanaa is a reporter covering climate and the environment and a member of the 2023-24 Times Fellowship class, a program for journalists early in their careers. More about Delger Erdenesanaa
