Billionaires are always on-the-go, even when they're vacationing.

Business Insider teamed up with boutique  luxury  travel agency  Original Travel , which plans trips for high-net-worth individuals, to find out the hottest spots the elite are spending their money on in 2020. They based this ranking on the number of bookings and performance; the latter was assessed by feedback, their expertise, and client inquiries.

Overall, billionaires are seeking out the unknown and the exclusive, from off-the-beaten path Kyrgyzstan to Nicaragua, newly removed from the FCO travel warning list. They're also looking to set sail, opting for intimate luxury cruises in far-flung destinations like the Maldives and Antarctica.

While they seem to have a taste for the exotic, they're also headed to the Middle East and Europe to visit a few more well-traveled countries.

Here are the destinations the ultra-wealthy will be checking off their bucket lists in the new decade.

10. Nicaragua

With Nicaragua removed from the FCO travel warning list in 2019 , it's set to welcome international visitors once again, Tom Barber, cofounder of Original Travel, told Business Insider. "Nicaragua has everything that we love so much about Costa Rica, but with fewer tourists and — as it's the largest country in Central America — more space to get off the beaten track," he said.

Its city of Granada has an edge over cities in neighboring countries, he added, for its colonial appeal, pastel-colored baroque buildings, and rich Spanish architecture.

9. Kyrgyzstan

Barber foresees an increase in tourism in Uzbekistan next year since it ditched its visa requirements for travelers from 45 countries including the UK. As such, he expects more intrepid travelers looking for somewhere untouched will head to neighboring Kyrgyzstan. 

The country is home to mountains, Silk Road sites, and a nomadic culture. "We're seeing a rise in people wanting to go off-grid, digitally detox, and taste the kind of wilderness that is as yet still untouched, untamed, and untainted by tourism," Amelia Stewart, brand ambassador for Original Travel, told Business Insider. "Kyrgyzstan ticks those boxes, and also makes a fantastic combination tour with neighbouring Uzbekistan. It's a country on the cusp of discovery but not for much longer."

8. Maldives

Original Travel has seen a 396% increase in bookings in the Maldives for 2020, Barber said. It's largely because of the luxurious Four Seasons Explorer, a floating resort that only hosts a maximum of 22 guests. 

Original Travel and Four Seasons teamed up to send the luxury catamaran to the remote southern atolls for the first time, hopping across the Maldives' most secluded islands and exploring some of the least visited dive sites, Barber said. 

The Maldives is also home to plenty of luxury resorts. Baros Maldives, which includes 77 ultra-luxurious villas, has been dubbed the "World's Most Romantic Resort" by  World Travel Awards for four years in a row, and six times total, reported Business Insider's Katie Warren . And the adults-only Kudaadoo Maldives Private Island was named the best new luxury hotel of 2019 .

February is going to be prime-time for travel to Jamaica, thanks to "reliably good weather" and the 75th birthday anniversary of Jamaican native Bob Marley, according to Barber.

It's also home to plenty of luxury hotels, he said, such as the five-star Goldeneye, once home to James Bond creator Ian Fleming; cliffside resort Strawberry Hill; and Geeham, which has its own recording studio — Gwen Stefani, Drake, and Alicia Keys have stayed there, according to Oyster .

6. Antarctica

"2020 marks 200 years since Nathaniel Palmer laid claim to the discovery of the Antarctic mainland, making it an iconic year for all Antarctic travel," Barber said. Travelers are interested in the exclusive experience of  the Magellan Explorer , an expedition vessel built for the Antarctic and the first small passenger ship to offer single cabins that launched in 2019.

More than 55,000 tourists visited Antarctica  in the 2018-2019 season — an 18%-plus increase from a decade prior, according to data from the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators. Most visitors come from the US, China, Australia, and the UK, many of them  on luxury cruises ,  reported Warren .

Israel has seen several new transportation and hospitality openings set to make it a hot destination next year, according to Barber: Ramon airport, which opened in January 2019, "created an international gateway" to the Red Sea and Eilat; Virgin Atlantic launched a new daily service from Heathrow to Tel Aviv in September 2019; and Six Senses, a five-star luxury resort chain, is set to open in the Negev Desert in February 2020.

"Tel Aviv has seen a recent influx in tourism and from that, an increased demand in luxury hotels," Galit Heller, director of sales and marketing at  The Jaffa , a five-star hotel in Tel Aviv, previously told Business Insider . "With an increased popularity, and a previous lack in the luxury hospitality scene, we see many luxury hotels popping up across Tel Aviv."

Barber has seen a 150% increase in 2020 bookings for Chile. He thinks it's partly because a solar eclipse is set to happen in the country on December 14, 2020, passing through the Chilean Lake District. The area offers a lot of opportunity for adventure, including hiking, horseriding, kayaking, and fishing, he said.

It's also a perfect spot for luxury seekers:  Business Insider's David Slotnick  stayed at Easter Island's primary all-inclusive luxury hotel, Explora Rapa Nui, and found his stay to be "phenomenal."

"Less traditional luxury — no white tablecloth breakfasts served on your private balcony overlooking the ocean — Explora offers the luxury of being able to let go of planning and logistics without sacrificing choice or personalization," Slotnick wrote.

Egypt was the top destination for billionaires in 2019 and remains a top spot in the new decade. That's all thanks to the long-awaited re-opening of The Grand Egyptian Museum and Steam Ship Sudan, a cruise that glides down the Nile between Luxor and Aswan. Original Travel exclusively chartered the steamer for ten days during October 2020 to celebrate the film adaptation of Agatha's Christie's "Death on the Nile."

Egypt is steeped in history, with plenty of archaeological sites, temples, and tombs, and has numerous luxury offerings, from dining restaurants in Cairo to beach resorts along the coast of the Red Sea.

2. Portugal

"Just as 2019 seemed to be all about discovering hidden Greece, in 2020, eyes will turn to lesser-known Portugal," Barber said. "Currently famous for the Algarve and golf, travelers are starting to wake up to how much more the country has to offer."

Millennials favored the country in 2019 for its charming neighborhoods and buzzing nightlife, and now it seems that the wealthy are picking up on the hot spot as well.

The capital of Lisbon is home to the Bairro Alto neighborhood, where the eponymous luxury hotel recently reopened, and a "food scene that befits the hometown of star chef, Nuno Mendes," Barber added. Just south of Lisbon is Comporta, which has a "boho surfing vibe," and to the west are Portugal's Azore Islands, which have been compared to "a warm Iceland" for their dramatic volcanic landscape, Barber said.

September 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower Voyage and founding of Plymouth Colony. As such, the UK will be hosting cultural and artistic events throughout the whole year to celebrate, and Barber expects it to attract wealthy travelers.

Here’s where all the billionaires live.

The data for the world’s wealthiest cities came from global citizenship firm Henley & Partners ; their report measured just how fast millionaire growth has increased in the past 10 years across major cities all around the globe. It’s also interesting that many of these cities allow easier immigration based on larger sums of investment, which gives millionaires and billionaires a leg up over other foreign citizens. To find this list, Henley & Partners hired New World Wealth , a global intelligence firm, to collect data from 97 cities across nine regions worldwide. The report ranked the cities based on the spending habits of over 150,000 high-net-worth individuals, emphasizing those with over $10 million in investable assets. Of the 10 richest cities in the world, three are in the U.S. and three are in China, but there are a few other major countries included, too. See if your city made the cut below.

New York City

It might not come as a surprise to you that New York City tops the list of the wealthiest cities in the world: According to the report, the city is home to 340,000 individuals worth over $1 million, 724 centi-millionaires, and 58 billionaires. It’s also home to one of the most expensive real estate options in the country, at a whopping $85 million (a midtown Manhattan penthouse , of course), and some of the world’s most expensive restaurants , so the millionaires and billionaires definitely have room to play. In fact, since 2012, the report says that the population of high-net-worth individuals grew by 40 percent, which helps explain the city’s top spot on this list.

Tokyo, Japan, is number two, mostly due to the fact that the city counts for 21 percent of the country’s entire millionaire population. According to the report, it boasts 250 centi-millionaires and 14 billionaires. It’s also the economic capital of Japan, with world-renowned companies such as Honda and Sony headquartered there.

The Bay Area

The Henley & Partners report notes that the Bay Area in California includes both San Francisco and Silicon Valley, and this tech haven is home to 285,000 millionaires, along with 629 centi-millionaires and 63 billionaires. (So no, it’s not just tech CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg and Tim Cook who have money to spend over there!)

The Bay Area saw a growth of 68 percent in its population of high-net-worth individuals from 2012 to 2022, and Los Altos in particular—located just on the western border of Silicon Valley—has been dubbed the second richest city in all of America , with a median household income of $235,278.

London in the United Kingdom ranks four on this list, with 258,000 resident millionaires, 384 centi-millionaires, and 36 billionaires. It’s home to some of the world’s most expensive zip codes , too, with homes in Kensington going for no less than $14 million. From London, you can also easily access most of Europe (think: weekend getaways to Paris, Brussels, Ibiza, and more), which only adds to its appeal, plus some of the world's best shopping .

The Republic of Singapore has 240,100 millionaires, 329 centi-millionaires, and 27 billionaires, ranking it fifth on the list. Since 2012, the report says that the population of high-net-worth individuals grew by 40 percent, just as New York’s did: In fact, according to the Henley Private Wealth Migration Dashboard , close to 2,900 high-net-worth individuals moved there in 2022. Singapore is also loved by high-wealth migrants because of its low tax and crime rates, as well as its mild tropical climate.

Los Angeles

Long known as the entertainment capital of the world, Los Angeles has 480 centi-millionaires and 42 billionaires. The growth rate of high-net-worth individuals since 2012 is a whopping 35 percent, and it includes wealth held in high-profile areas like Beverly Hills and Malibu.

In fact, one of the world’s most expensive homes, a beautiful, seaside-front property on two and a half pristine acres of land, sits in Malibu and retails for $115 million. And if Selling Sunset has taught us nothing else, there are several other homes in the city just like it!

According to the Henley & Partners report, Hong Kong ranks seventh on the list, due to the fact that many of Asia’s wealthiest live there: After all, 129,500 millionaires, 290 centi-millionaires, and 32 billionaires call Hong Kong home. Hong Kong also boasts the world’s second most expensive real estate: Data from U.K.-based real estate company Savills shows Hong Kong has an average of 40,000 Euros per square meter on average, beaten only by Morocco. The most famous area? Mount Nicholson Road , a luxury development property that contains residences often selling for over $90 million.

The second city on this list in China, Beijing has 128,200 millionaires, 354 centi-millionaires, and a whopping 43 billionaires, which is one of the higher numbers (only New York and the Bay Area have numbers larger than this).

According to the report, the growth of high-net-worth individuals in Beijing has been exponential at 70 percent, suggesting more and more people are moving there—especially since it’s the headquarters for many of the world’s largest companies (such as Bank of China , the fourth largest bank in the world, and ByteDance , the parent company of TikTok, among others).

Shanghai, also in China, is number nine—the report says that it experienced the highest growth of high-net-worth individuals than any other city on the list, up 72 percent from 2012 to 2022. It boasts 127,200 millionaires, 332 centi-millionaires, and 40 billionaires, and is also widely known as China’s financial capital.

In fact, the Shanghai Stock Exchange is the third-largest stock market in the world by market cap (only after the NYSE and the Nasdaq). Luxury department store Harrods also just announced that they would be opening their first ever private members’ club in Shanghai this year, with fees starting at $21,000.

With 126,900 resident millionaires, 184 centi-millionaires, and 15 billionaires, Sydney is home to some of the world’s most exclusive residential suburbs—Bellevue Hill, Darling Point, Mosman, Point Piper, and Vaucluse, just to name a few. The median home price in Sydney is $1.3 million, with Savills ranking it number seven when it comes to the world’s highest average price per square meter in real estate.

“The city has experienced especially strong wealth growth over the past 20 years, and is quickly becoming one of the wealthiest cities in the Asia Pacific region,” says the report . “We expect this growth to continue, with Sydney projected to break into the global Top 5 wealthiest cities by 2040.”

The ranks of billionaires dwindled over the past year, with their total worth dropping by $400 billion, says the latest list of the world's richest people from Forbes magazine.

There are 2,668 billionaires around the globe, according to Forbes' annual World's Billionaires list , down 87 from the previous year. These billionaires are worth a combined $12.7 trillion.

Forbes cites the Russia-Ukraine war, the COVID pandemic and weaker markets for the dip in the number of billionaires.

The U.S. still tops all countries with the most billionaires at 735, followed by China's 607.

Elon Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX founder topped Forbes' list for the first time ever with a net worth of $219 billion. More than half of the top 10 billionaires earned their fortunes in the technology sector.

1. Elon Musk ($219 billion). Musk recently joined Twitter's board after claiming a 9% stake in the company.

T here are a record 2,781 billionaires spread around the globe this year, in places as far flung as the Isle of Man and Manantiales, a small fishing village and resort in Uruguay. Yet they mainly reside in just a handful of elite cities.

In fact, nearly a quarter of billionaires, worth a combined $3 trillion, live in one of ten cities in only six countries, according to Forbes ’ latest World’s Billionaires list . New York City once again is home to the most billionaires in the world: It’s the primary residence of an estimated 110 billionaires who are worth a collective $694 billion. The Big Apple has long dominated the ranks, coming in at No. 1 for all but one of the past 11 years. (Beijing briefly took the top spot in 2021.) Billionaire New Yorkers include some 62 Wall Streeters and other finance and investment tycoons, 14 real estate moguls and a dozen fashion and retail magnates.

Hong Kong and Moscow tie for second place, with 74 billionaires each. That’s a net gain of two for Hong Kong, which is an autonomous territory of China, and an impressive net jump of 12 for Moscow, which climbs from No. 6 last year to No. 2, as Russian wealth rebounds after the fallout from the country’s invasion of Ukraine in early 2022 pushed scores of Muscovites from the billionaires list. Mumbai also made a big jump, from seventh to fourth after adding 13 more billionaires since last year.

One city that lost its spot in the top 10 is Shenzhen. The Chinese city, which last year held the eight spot, suffered a net loss of 17 billionaires and now ranks No. 12. Two other popular billionaire cities in the struggling nation, Beijing and Shanghai, both made the top 10 but slid down the list this year.

Both San Francisco and Los Angeles are up this year, in part because Forbes included cities and towns in their county, such as Santa Monica and Glendora. Forbes was not able to determine primary residences for 59 of the 2,781 billionaires on the 2024 ranking.

The city’s two richest residents make up a quarter of its billionaire wealth: media magnate and former mayor Michael Bloomberg (estimated net worth: $106 billion) and Koch Industries heir Julia Koch ($64.3 billion). New York is also the home of eight new billionaires, including Jean Madar ($1.1 billion), cofounder of French fragrance company Interparfums, and Assaf Rappaport ($1 billion), cofounder of Israeli cloud security startup Wiz.

While Russia’s war in Ukraine is waging on, the ultra-wealthy in Moscow just got a combined $50 billion richer, catapulting the country’s capital from No. 6 to a tie for No. 2 on the list. The city also gained 12 newcomers who cracked ten digits this year, some of whom after profiting (either directly or indirectly) from the ongoing war. This includes Vladimir Melnikov ($1.7 billion), whose fast-fashion retailer Gloria Jeans saw sales go up 28% to $875 million in the past two years, thanks partly to foreign rivals H&M and Zara shuttering nearly 650 stores combined.

Hong Kong came in second again this year, this time tying with Moscow, after a modest net increase to 74 billionaires. Among its billionaire residents are eight newcomers, including Jean-Louis van der Velde ($3.9 billion), cofounder and CEO of crypto businesses Tether and Bitfinex, and Solina Chau ($3.1 billion), whose venture capital fund, Horizons Ventures, was among the earliest investors in tech companies like Facebook, Spotify, Zoom.

Surging three spots to No. 4, Mumbai’s richest citizens not only gained a combined $100 billion, they also welcomed 11 freshly minted billionaires to their ranks. The city is home to Asia’s richest person, Mukesh Ambani ($116 billion), as well as Shapoor Mistry ($9.9 billion), an Irish citizen who controls the Mumbai-based engineering and construction giant Shapoorji Pallonji Group.

Total billionaires: 63 | Since last year: flat | Total net worth: $211 billion | Richest resident: Zhang Yiming ($43.4 billion)

China’s capital lost 32 billionaires since its brief stint at the top of the list in 2021, when 100 Forbes listers called the city home. Its 63 residents count is flat versus last year, though their combined net worth dropped by 14% amid China’s economic struggles. Despite all this, two newcomers emerged in Beijing this year: Dai Wenyuan ($1.6 billion), founder and CEO of AI software company 4Paradigm, and Zheng Fan ($1.5 billion), independent director at Li Auto, an electric vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Beijing.

Climbing down the latter by one spot each year, London has dropped from No. 4 on the list in 2022 to its current position at No. 6. The Big Smoke did not add any newcomers this year and lost one of its most iconic residents, Mohamed Al Fayed , best known for being the one-time owner of London department store Harrod's and the father of Dodi Fayed, who died in a car crash alongside Princess Diana in 1997. The elder Al Fayed passed away in August, at age 94.

7. Shanghai

Total billionaires: 54 | since last year: -11 | total net worth: $167 billion | richest resident: colin huang ($38.9 billion).

Shanghai lost the most billionaires among the top ten this year, dropping from 65 to 54. Over half of those who remain on the list are worth less than in 2023, mirroring declines in other Chinese cities such as Beijing. Still, Shanghai welcomed eight new members to the ten-figure-club, most of whom made their fortune in the tech industry, and watched the city’s richest resident, Colin Huang ($38.9 billion), the founder of e-commerce giant PPD Holdings, get $8.7 billion richer.

8. Los Angeles

Total billionaires: 53 | since last year: +19 | total net worth: $222 billion | richest resident: john tu ($13.6 billion).

The boom in celebrity billionaires is boosting LA, which jumps into the top 10 amid Forbes’ new methodology for including surrounding areas. Billionaire Angelenos include NBA great LeBron James ($1.2 billion), reality star and shapewear mogul Kim Kardashian ($1.7 billion) and singer Rihanna ($1.4 billion).

9. Singapore

Total billionaires: 52 | since last year: +6 | total net worth: $156 billion | richest resident: eduardo saverin ($28 billion).

Singapore continues its ascent as one of the most popular cities for the ultra wealthy. Since the city-state made it on the list at No. 9 last year, it gained a net of 6 billionaires, bumping it to No. 8. Singapore is home to Eduardo Saverin ($28 billion), who is a cofounder of Facebook, and two trios of brothers: Bachtiar Karim ($1.4 billion), Burhan Karim ($1.2 billion) and Bahari Karim ($1.2 billion), who together run palm oil firm Musim Mas, and Wee Ee Cheong ($1.6 billion), Wee Ee Chao ($1.3 billion) and Wee Ee Lim ($1.3 billion), grandsons of the cofounder of the 500-branch United Overseas Bank.

10. San Francisco

Total billionaires: 50 | since last year: +13 | total net worth: $185 billion | richest resident: dustin moskovitz ($18.3 billion).

Scores of billionaires have sprung up from Silicon Valley’s roots, including San Francisco’s richest resident, Facebook and Asana cofounder Dustin Moskovitz ($18.3 billion) and six newcomers, including Ivan Zhao ($1.5 billion), cofounder and CEO of the productivity and work-apps software Notion; Michelle Zatlyn ($1.2 billion), cofounder, president and COO of internet infrastructure and security company Cloudflare; and OpenAI chief and tech investor Sam Altman ($1 billion).

America’s Best-Paid Tourism Marketers

Many tourism board CEOs command high compensation. Here's Skift's first major look at the pay packages of U.S. destination marketing executives.

Many American tourism marketers are well-paid. Visit California CEO Caroline Beteta recently collected more than $1.5 million in compensation. Brand USA CEO Chris Thompson recently took home over $700,000.

These were some of the findings when Skift reviewed the the pay for U.S. tourism marketers at city, state, and national levels. Here’s how we approached it:

• We used the 2022 fiscal year because those records were the most comprehensively up-to-date.
• We focused on the top 20 cities, based on those with the highest inbound visitation from overseas . Many are non-profits, and we were able to review their Form 990s filed with the IRS. In some cases, we got pay data from government agencies.
• At the state level, we were interested in heavily touristed states with large, non-profit destination marketing organizations (DMOs), such as California, Hawaii, and Florida. We left out states like New York that didn’t have them.
• At the national level, we added  Brand USA , America’s destination marketing organization, and Destinations International , the association for destination marketers.

Pay for High-Profile U.S. Tourism Marketers in Fiscal Year 2022

Some Smaller Destinations Offer Big Pay

Some tourism marketing executives had high compensation, but because of their city’s relatively small inbound international visitation, they didn’t make our above list.

Exhibit A: In Indianapolis, Visit Indy CEO and President Leonard Hoops made $921,470 and is under contract. Visit Indy’s executive committee has twice renewed his contract, most recently in 2018 with a 12-year extension.

“The Visit Indy Board Executive Committee decided years ago that it wanted Leonard to continue elevating Indy into a top national and international destination,” said Chris Gahl, Visit Indy executive vice president and chief marketing officer. “Leonard is regularly a target of recruiters for other CEO searches but the Visit Indy Board has proactively worked to ensure that Leonard will be in Indy for years to come.”

Destinations typically justify high pay packages based on performance.

Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp’s Christopher “Butch” Spyridon made $1,393,273 in fiscal year 2022 before his retirement last year. Spyridon led the organization for over three decades and has been credited for playing a big role in turning Nashville into one of America’s most-visited cities.

Factors in DMO Pay

There’s a gray area regarding how much of a destination’s performance is due to the CEO.

“It’s always hard to determine if the performance is based solely on the work of the CEO or the organization or whether that performance is just momentum,” said Greg Klassen, a former CEO of Destination Canada and senior director of Skift Advisory .

Pay is usually determined by the board of directors, which might consider performance indicators, such as hotel occupancy, visitor spending, overnight stays, and convention bookings.

“Any incentive beyond my base bonus was tied to the overall strategic plan and the KPIs against that plan,” said Don Welsh, who is currently the CEO and president of Destinations International and who recalls his experiences serving as the top boss at Visit Seattle, Choose Chicago, and Visit Indy.

Why Tourism Bosses Are Paid What They’re Paid

The scope of the organization’s size, the complexity of the destination, and the CEO’s expected economic impact are big influences on compensation, said Mike Gamble, president and CEO of SearchWide Global , an executive recruiting firm.

Different boards may also have different priorities. Some boards, for example, may place greater weight on resident sentiment and community relations.

“Between my current job and previous jobs, anywhere between 15 and 50 KPIs were used in my reviews, and those vary from one to the next,” said Brad Dean, CEO and president of Discover Puerto Rico .

Larger Organizations, Larger Challenges

Another factor in pay: State-level destination marketing organizations often come with oversight of massive budgets.

Exhibit A: Visit California’s Caroline Beteta earned $1,562,141 in the 2022 fiscal year. The state’s destination marketing organization received around $100 million in a one-time investment from its state government.

Beteta has been credited for helping California’s tourism and meeting industries recover from the pandemic .

In some states, how much those budgets can go toward executive pay is limited by organizational constraints. Visit Florida’s Dana Young made $214,876, but only up to $120,000 can come from state funds. “All amounts in excess of $120,000 are paid for with private (non-state) funds,” said Visit Florida’s page on executive compensation . Visit Florida is a public-private partnership.

Skift Advisory’s Klassen said the tourism board CEO position has become more complicated over the past decade. These executives must manage destination marketing and development, attract visitors and new investors, obtain funding to build hotels, convention facilities, attractions, and other tourism assets, and manage relations with politicians and residents.

“There’s a number of pretty charismatic CEOs who perhaps tried to convince their boards that they’re the reason why the performance is happening within their destination,” Klassen said.
