Live Review: Culture Club w/ Howard Jones and Berlin @ Jiffy Lube Live — 7/28/23
Boy George was dashing, clad as a New Romantic god, in Culture Club’s recent concert performance in the DC metro area. The pop music icon’s dedication to smart fashion persisted despite the soaring temperatures, which sparked a summer squall and lightning storm that delayed the band’s concert.
“Heat is the enemy of fashion,” George declared at the start of his set, although he made it look easy.
“I would like to know his skincare routine!” marveled several onlookers from the soundboard of Jiffy Lube Live, where photographers were nestled on July 28. It was true that despite the heat, George took every care to appear very colorful and stylish, and he was positively glowing.
Just as importantly, Boy George sounded great as he lead Culture Club through a brisk 75-minute show. He put his husky, bluesy voice to work on a cover of “Sympathy for the Devil” by The Rolling Stones to open the show. The threat of lightning condensed the concert, and Culture Club wasted no time getting down to business. Sadly, however, the shorter set length called for some hard choices, and Culture Club jettisoned the excellent new songs they have been presenting on this tour.
The packed Jiffy Lube Live pavilion however was game for whatever Culture Club had to deliver, and deliver they did. Boy George, guitarist Roy Hay, and bassist Mikey Craig kept the hits rolling from an early rendition of “It’s a Miracle” (1984) through a tender “Do You Want to Hurt Me” (1982) to a rousing “Church of the Poison Mind” (1983) made into a medley with “I’m Your Man” by Wham!
Watch the official music video for “Church of the Poison Mind” by Culture Club on YouTube:
Backing singer Roxy Yarnold was again a revelation, infusing “Church of the Poison Mind” and other songs with a thrilling musical roar. The wonderful Vangelis Polydorou also sounded great, stealing the spotlight for a moment during “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya” with his powerful voice.
Culture Club’s twin drums and Mikey’s bass really elevated the island flavor of “Karma Chameleon” in the show’s encore and gave a unique character to a killer cover of “Get It On” by T. Rex, an artist that George acknowledged as an early and beloved influence. In addition to covers of the T. Rex and The Rolling Stones, Culture Club covered “Everything I Own” by Bread in the midst of the set, granting the song new life with George’s deeply romantic rendering of the song.
Culture Club were great, and the band made the best use of their reduced time. Watching the dynamic Roy Hay rock through the Culture Club hits, the audience could see the band was firing on all thrusters and exceeding expectations with a captivating show.
The reduction in overall stage time due to the lightning storm meant that openers Howard Jones and Berlin also reduced their sets. Howard, performing second on the program at Jiffy Lube Live, thundered through an all-to-brief set of five songs. But Howard and his band were in high spirits. Guitarist Robin Boult smiled widely from stage left as he and Howard rallied with “Like to Get to Know You Well” (1984).
Synthesist Robbie Bronnimann kept the electronic beats pulsing through “Everlasting Love” (1989), as Howard sat at a keyboard for a song of yearning and desire. Bassist Nick Beggs thrashed his head through “What Is Love?” (1983) while hugging his Chapman stick.
Watch the official music video for “What Is Love?” by Howard Jones on YouTube:
Speaking of Beggs, Howard has been performing a cover of “Too Shy” by Kajagoogoo, Nick’s former ’80s band, in honor of his presence on the tour. But the lightning storm demanded some numbers including this one be cut, which was too bad! Still, Howard and his band knocked it out of the park with talent and grace.
Berlin, the first band of the evening, saw their set reduced to only four songs! But Berlin burst out of the gate, ready to roll. Frontwoman Terri Nunn was a stunner in an elegant black dress (she’s really showcasing some eye-catching ensembles on this tour!), and she thrilled the audience by opening with “No More Words” (1984). Terri swept across the stage with timestopping beauty and charm, and she sounded great as she sang with gusto.
There are several songs you always hope Berlin will perform, and one of those is new wave anthem “The Metro” (1981), a breakup song that makes you want to dance. Thankfully, Terri and company surfaced the song second in their set before they took up the enduring hit “Take My Breath Away” (1986). For “Take My Breath Away,” Terri descended into the audience, electrifying concertgoers on the floor with her personal warmth and magnetism.
Watch the official music video for “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin on YouTube:
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love that classic Berlin band members John Crawford and David Diamond are back in the fold. The two veteran musicians seemed to have a lot of fun as they cut loose on guitar solos and mugging for the crowd. John, who founded the band in 1978, played loose and carefree with a growling contribution to the iconic “Sex (I’m A…)” (1982), while he and Terri closed the show with a playful and expressive exchange.
(I’m still tickled recalling telling Terri that Baltimore radio stations wouldn’t play the risque “Sex” until after 9pm or 10pm at night back in 1982 and she was surprised to hear it .)
This bill is catnip for old school new wavers like myself, and I urge you to catch Culture Club, Howard Jones, and Berlin when they visit a city near you. They continue to perform throughout August as they cross the country to California. You’ll leave the show elated and singing the bands’ songs for days.
Catch Culture Club on tour!

About Culture Club
Few new wave groups were as popular as Culture Club. During the early ’80s, the group racked up seven straight Top Ten hits in the U.K. and six Top Ten singles in the U.S. with their light, infectious pop-soul. Though their music was radio-ready, what brought the band stardom was Boy George, the group’s charismatic, cross-dressing lead singer. George dressed in flamboyant dresses and wore heavy makeup, creating a disarmingly androgynous appearance that created a sensation on early MTV. George also had a biting wit and frequently came up with cutting quips that won Culture Club heavy media exposure in both America and Britain.
By the time Culture Club’s second album Colour by Numbers was released in the fall of 1983, the band was the most popular pop/rock group in America and England. “Karma Chameleon” became a number one hit on both sides of the Atlantic, while the album reached number one in the U.K. and number two in the U.S. Throughout 1984, the group racked up hits, with “It’s a Miracle” and “Miss Me Blind” reaching the Top Ten. In the fall, the group returned with its third album, Waking Up with the House on Fire. While “The War Song” reached number two in the U.K., the album was a disappointment in America, stalling at platinum; its predecessor went quadruple platinum.
Following a brief tour in February, Culture Club went on hiatus for 1985, with Craig, Moss, and Hay pursuing extracurricular musical projects in the interim. Though their comeback single, “Move Away,” became a hit in April, its accompanying album From Luxury to Heartache stayed on the charts for only a few months.
George confirmed the group’s disbandment in the spring of 1987, and he began a solo career later that year. While his solo career produced several dance hits in Europe, he didn’t land an American hit until 1992, when his cover of Dave Berry’s “The Crying Game” was featured in the Academy Award-nominated film of the same name. In 1995, George published his autobiography, Take It Like a Man. Culture Club reunited in 1998, issuing the two-disc set VH1 Storytellers/Greatest Hits.
A new album, Don’t Mind If I Do, appeared in 1999, reaching 64 on the U.K. charts; it did not receive an American release. Culture Club next celebrated their 20th Anniversary with a 2002 concert at Royal Albert Hall.
Culture Club reunited in 2014 for a tour and the band also began work on a new album with producer Youth. The group scheduled the release of an album called Tribes in 2015, but the record never materialized. Instead, the recordings provided the foundation for Life, the 2018 album that marked Culture Club’s first new album in nearly 20 years. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

About Howard Jones 2023 marks the 40-year anniversary of the release of Howard Jones’ “New Song,” the ebullient hit that kicked off his career. Howard Jones’ most recent album is DIALOGUE, which was released in September of last year. DIALOGUE is the third album in a trilogy of electronic releases from Jones with multi-media project ENGAGE coming out in 2015 and studio album TRANSFORM out in 2019. DIALOGUE garnered serious coverage in outlets such as Spin , Stereogum and more. Last summer’s headlining tour with his full band/electronic set-up, featuring special guest alternative music legend Midge received rave reviews. LA Weekly declared Jones, “…poignant and perfect” and “absolutely superb”.
Electronic music pioneer Howard Jones has been a constant presence on the international touring scene for the past four decades, playing live in a number of different configurations including intimate solo shows and dates with his full high-tech band set-up. He first burst upon the contemporary music scene in 1983, with his very English songwriting and pioneering synthesizers with “New Song”. His first two albums HUMAN’S LIB and DREAM INTO ACTION were worldwide hits. HUMAN’S LIB reached #1 in 1984 in the UK and featured the hits “New Song,” and “What Is Love?” In 1985, Jones released the follow-up, DREAM INTO ACTION, which quickly became a Top Ten Platinum album in the United States and featured the smashes: “Things Can Only Get Better,” “Life In One Day,” “No One Is To Blame,” and “Like To Get To Know You Well.”
Howard Jones has sold nearly 10 million albums worldwide and continues to make new music and tour the world. Jones has performed on NBC’s top-rated morning and nighttime shows respectively, Today and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. His ubiquitous hits can be heard in such high-profile television series and films such as “Stranger Things,” “Breaking Bad,” “Watchmen,” “The Carrie Diaries”, “Superstore” and “Bumblebee”.

About BERLIN
BERLIN will forever be recognized as the American progenitor of electro-pop artistry with sensually appealing lyrics. Few bands emerging from the era of BERLIN have achieved as far-reaching and long-lasting an impact and, rarely, such a timeless array of musical grooves. The Los Angeles-based band made its first national impression with the provocative single “Sex (I’m A…)” from the platinum-selling debut EP Pleasure Victim in 1982. “The Metro” and “No More Words” were also chart toppers, but it was the unforgettable, intimate, and strikingly beautiful love song, “Take My Breath Away” that took the band to another level. The ballad’s defining role in the Tom Cruise film, Top Gun , helped solidify BERLIN’s everlasting place in American pop-culture. The song was a #1 international hit and received both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for “Best Original Song” in 1986.
BERLIN’s discography has yielded twelve gold and platinum album awards. The band—founded by Nunn, bassist John Crawford, and keyboard player David Diamond—made its everlasting place in American pop-culture. Nunn’s ongoing influence earned her the #11 spot on VH1.com’s “100 Greatest Women in Rock,” while, as an actress, she played leading roles in films including Katie: Portrait of a Centerfold with Kim Basinger, and Thank God It’s Friday with Jeff Goldblum and Debra Winger. Along with comedienne, Wendy Liebman, Nunn also previously hosted the critically acclaimed radio show Unbound with Terri Nunn on 88.5 FM KCSN Los Angeles.

Welcome on board
Harbour and canal tours in Lübeck
The feeling is indescribable. You go on board a softly rocking pleasure boat and your heart opens up. You don’t have to do anything, simply sit there comfortably, take a deep breath and leave it all to the captain. You can look left or right and drink a coffee as the historical façades, church spires, bridges and boats glide slowly by like friendly old acquaintances. You can enjoy the quiet ride and the emotional impact that Lübeck has on you. The one-hour harbour and canal tour around the historic Old Town is a maritime classic and very much to be recommended. Things get really spectacular on the Splash Tour where you explore Lübeck on land and water with the floating amphibious bus.
The river run on the Trave from Lübeck to the resort of Travemünde 20 kilometres away is something special for the senses, opening up new horizons. Here you go on board a comfortable ship offering panoramic views as you relax and glide past the idyllic Schellbruch nature reserve, the old fishing village of Gothmund and the beautiful Dummersdorf Bank all the way to the Baltic Sea. And of course, back again if you like. If you’re more of a wild type and would like to experience nature at first hand and in its pristine state, an excursion along the River Wakenitz, the “Amazon of the North”, is the answer for you. Come on board!

Watch Neil Young and Crazy Horse Perform ‘Sedan Delivery’ for First Time Since 2013
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
Neil Young and Crazy Horse played Firstbank Amphitheater in Franklin, Tennessee, Thursday evening after a one-night rain delay. They rewarded the patient fans with a wild, extended set packed with surprises.
The first one came five songs in when Young dug out the On the Beach deep cut “Vampire Blues.” He brought the song back into his live rotation in 2015 after a 41-year break, but only at Promise of the Real and solo shows. This was the first time it’s ever appeared at a Crazy Horse concert. Drummer Ralph Molina hadn’t touched it since the original recording in 1974, and bassist Billy Talbot had never played it any capacity. ( New Crazy Horse guitarist Micah Nelson performed it at several Promise of the Real shows in 2015 and 2016.)

Up until this point on the tour, Young and Crazy Horse had limited the encore set to just one song. But after the standard set closer, “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black),” they came back for the tour premiere of “Roll Another Number (For the Road).” The Tonight’s the Night song has closed out countless Young shows over the decades, but he was just getting started.
They emerged yet again for the Zuma tunes “Danger Bird” and “Don’t Cry No Tears” before wrapping up the night with a frenzied “Sedan Delivery” from Rust Never Sleeps. It was the first time Young had played the song since 2013.
Neil Young and Crazy Horse kicked off their 33-date North American tour April 24 in San Diego, California. Due to concerns about Covid, every single show is outdoors. This has caused some complications along the way, including gigs in Austin and Dallas that were delayed due to poor weather. (It wound up barely drizzling in Dallas, but it was called off due to a dire forecast.) The tour continues May 11 at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Virginia.
Young shows are notoriously unpredictable, and he has a long history of packing his set with new songs or ones he hasn’t even released yet, most notoriously in 2003 when he played his entire eco-rock opera Greendale months before it came out. But this tour is devoted almost entirely to Crazy Horse classics from the late Sixties, the Seventies, and their 1990 comeback LP, Ragged Glory. The most recent song in the current mix is 1996’s “Scattered (Let’s Think About Livin’).” The tour wraps up Sept 29 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, but there’s been talk of overseas dates next year.

Explore The Spreewald Biosphere and Lübbenau: Day Trip from Berlin

A re you curious about nature-based day trips from Berlin? Lübbenau and Spreewald are both just a quick day trip from Berlin. The serene and peaceful waterways are perfect for kakaying or leisure boating, providing a much-needed break from the stimulation of the hip city of Berlin. Not to mention, there are more pickles here than you could ever hope to consume. I traveled to the Spreewald Biosphere with a group of friends based on a hostel front desk employee tip, and I am so glad we took the time to visit. Slowly paddling through the sprawling rivers of the Spreewald Natural Reserve was a liberating and unique nature-based adventure. This reserve is a UNESCO-recognized natural biosphere , and there is also much to do for the outgoing adventurer or cultural connoisseur.

The vast waterways of Spreewald are considered a biodiversity hot spot. That means the plants and animals here are unique to the region and vital to a healthy environment in Germany. The area has more than 270km of navigable waterways surrounded by meadows, forests, and fens shaped by the last Ice Age. About 6,000 species call this stunning place home, including rare and protected animals such as fire-bellied toads, sea eagles, green hawkers, and otters.
The area is of great cultural significance as well. As you paddle the waterways, you’ll notice numerous old cottages, docks, and farmland in the distance. Many of the residents who live here engage in a traditional lifestyle that relies on healthy waterways. It is common to see people going about daily life, fishing, or commuting via boat.
Sustainable Travel in Spreewald
The natural habitat of Spreewald is delicate and easily disturbed, so engaging in responsible tourism as you visit is vital. Do not throw trash in the waterways; collect, pick, or harvest any plant species. If you see wildlife, observe from a distance and do not harass or disturb animals.
Take time to learn about this UNESCO biosphere reserve’s natural and cultural heritage and its importance to Germany’s culture and environment.
Getting from Berlin to Lübbenau
Getting from Berlin to Lübbenau is relatively straightforward. From the Berlin Ostbahnhof, you can take the S5 towards Strausberg Bhf for nine stops or 20 min. Here, you will change to the RE2 heading towards Cottbus, Hauptbahnhof, for 1 hour and 4 minutes or 11 stops. You will disembark at the Lübbenau stop. This transit option will set you back about €21 for the round trip, and you can buy your tickets from the Hauptbahnhof. Don’t forget to validate your tickets.
Sit back and relax with a guided tour that takes you from Berlin to Spreewald . These tours are only bookable from April onward but include all the best highlights of Spreewald without the hassle of planning your adventures.
Things to do In Spreewald and Lübbenau
Rent kayaks and explore the waterways.
After departing the Lübbenau station, it will be a 15-minute walk into the central part of town, where the adventure awaits! You have several options for adventure rentals, and they’re all somewhat comparable. We used Bootsverleih Franke. They were wonderful! An attendant gave us all the needed gear, handed over a well-marked map, and sent us on our way. He reassured us that he would find us if we were too long. Perhaps the dreamy idea of having this young German find us caused us to wander off course and get entirely lost.
Thankfully, we managed to find our way back to the kayak rental dock, and in hindsight, we were thankful we got a bit lost. It all added to the adventure. Once in the water, you enter a world unlike any other. Lush grasses towering over your head sway in the breeze, and sunlight trickles in where it can. At first, we were joined by large punt groups, other kayakers, and canoers, but the farther we traveled, the quieter it got. In the peaceful wilderness, we bathed in the golden sunlight of late afternoon.
Join a Cultural Punt Tour
However, be warned that kayaking simultaneously while trying to navigate with a map is difficult. If you prefer to do this with a guide, book a guided punt tour to accommodate larger groups. These tours even stop for a cheeky beer at one of the many bars along the waterways. This is a great way to sit back and relax as a local takes you along the canals, navigating with expertise as you can enjoy the natural surroundings. We saw plenty of these boats while in the water; they seemed like an excellent way to learn about the cultural and natural heritage of the region.
Grab a Local Beer Along the Water
On the return trip, we paddled through a quaint village with bars and shops adorning the shore. Most of these areas are only accessible by boat. Since we got a bit lost, we had to paddle past them in case our boat provider came out looking for us, only to find us drinking beer after our boat rental had expired. If you stay on course or visit with a punt tour, take the time to stop and enjoy a tasty beer at the water’s edge.
Enjoy Gherkins (pickles)
Once you are back on land, you can venture into the main town square of Lübbenau. This is a charming traditional German town where English is not widely spoken, but there are plenty of pickles and ice cream for a hot day. The town is known for its pickling, and you can find plenty of street vendors selling a variety of pickles. Try their spicy chili ones, or go for something sweet. My friends and I joked this town was perfect to satiate oneself with the endless jams and ice cream.
I would LOVE to head back there for the gherkin tour that runs every Saturday and Monday starting at 10 am and is a 7-hour walking tour tasking all the succulent picks in the area!
Go for a Bike Ride!
The Spreewald biosphere is a beautiful place for bicycling as well. The Gherkin Rundweg, or the pickle circuit tour, traverses the Spreewald region on a relatively easy bike trail that covers 260km. You can rent bicycles and do part of it or book a guided tour. Don’t worry. There will be plenty of Gherkins along the way!
Visit Museums
You should visit one of the museums to learn more about Spreewald’s cultural and natural environment. The Spreewald Museums explores the cultural and historical heritage of the region. The Haus für Mensch und Natur is a cultural and ecological museum that educates you the ecology of the region and how the people have used the waterways for centuries.
Of course, there is also a Gherkin Museum that covers the importance of the pickle to the region.
Spend Several Days in Spreewald
If you want to spend several days in the Lübbenau Spree area, several multi-day tours are operating in the region . You can choose from kayaking and canoeing options, bicycle tours, walking tours, horseback riding, and fishing tours. These packages can be booked directly from the Spreewald tourism website.
Tips for Visiting Spreewald from Berlin
Traveling from Berlin to Lübbenau for kayaking in the Spreewald biosphere is about an 8-hour day trip.
There is something in Lübben for everyone, including a rural cultural experience in the small town. However, kayaking is for more independent and active travelers who are confident navigating waterways by the map and can spend 4+ hours paddling.
When to Visit?
Most Spreewald Activities operate from April to October. You can visit in winter, but you will find a sleepy town with most kayaking and boating excursions closed for the winter. If you visit during the shoulder seasons in spring or autumn, be prepared for chilly weather and possible rain.
What to Pack?
- Good active shoes- Keens or something good in water is preferred
- Light jacket for summer, as you will be in the shade most of the time
- Longer breathable/active pants
- Waterproof bag
- Easy-to-pack snacks
- Plenty of water or camelback
Curiosity Saves’ Sustainable Travel Resources & Tips
Accommodation: I primarily use Booking.com to find sustainable accommodation. Not only do you get a Genius Discount for being a loyal customer, but their new feature allows you to filter based on sustainability. When available, I will always choose a sustainable 3+ property, which means the hotel has significantly reduced its environmental impact and has a vested interest in the community. You can read about each hotel’s efforts at the bottom of the page.
Packing Essentials: Before buying, first consider if you need new items. If you do, invest in quality and long-lasting technical clothing from your local Co-Op like REI . REI is also great for getting your reusable water bottle and cutlery set .
Patagonia , has clothing created with regenerative practices . Patagonia will always repair or swap items and recycle them at the end of their line.
Farm to Fee t for socks made with regenerative practices that keep you stink and sweat-free and great for travel! Pistil Designs for cold-weather essentials.
Osprey travel bags have lasted me 10+ years, making them a great sustainable investment. Whether a day bag I take hiking or my favorite carry-on.
eSIM: Swapping out SIM cards in every country you travel to is wasteful and confusing, so I recommend Airalo eSIM . Airalo is a game changer for travel, as I can purchase a local or regional SIM with a pre-determined amount of data and download an eSIM directly on my phone.
Buses and Trains: To find and book the best train and bus transportation in Europe, Canada, and the United States, I use Omio . Omio is a fantastic resource for quickly comparing train and bus routes with English search results and easy-to-use QR codes.
Of course, you might need to book a flight when trains and buses aren’t an option, and you’ve first considered reducing or altering your trip to avoid flying as much as possible. I use Google Flights for their easy-to-understand carbon comparison tool.
Car Rental: Discover Cars lets you shop for the best rate in English and keeps all your details in one place. Ganesh and I drove a Polestar EV at home and typically aim to book electric zero-emission or hybrid cars when we travel. Discover Cars has a filter that makes it easy to find hybrid and fully electric cars. They also offer resources on how to find charging stations best – but for that, I recommend the Plugshare app.
Tours and Excursions: GetYourGuide has an extensive collection of tours, excursions, and admission tickets for activities worldwide. When booking, you can look for the eco-certified badge, stay away from tours that promise wildlife encounters or direct contact, look for local tour guides, and quickly search the tour operator to ensure you support ethical operators.
While GetYourGuide is excellent for most locations, Viator by Trip Advisor has better activities for some of my favorite destinations, like my home state of Alaska.

Lubben is in a very scenic location at the narrowest point in the Spree valley. Many sights in the town were destroyed during the Second World War, but the late Renaissance palace, parts of the city walls, and the Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche did survive. The church is an attractive late-Gothic, single-nave church made of brick in the style typical of the region.
