RV Recliner Buying Considerations

There are a few similarities between finding traditional furniture for an apartment or home and picking new furniture for your RV. Knowing the space’s size and layout and the best fabrics for the expected usage level is important for both. Yet, when finding a recliner chair for your RV, you have to consider factors that don’t come into play when furnishing a stationary home.

There are four major areas you need to consider when narrowing your choices for RV furniture: fabric, size, weight, and available features. Let’s take a look at each, why they are important when considering a recliner chair for an RV, and the different options available.

The first thing anyone will notice about your furniture is its appearance, and when it comes to that, your fabric choice is key. But beyond feel, color, and pattern, the fabric also impacts the maintenance and longevity of your RV furniture. You will encounter a few different materials when researching recliner chairs for RVs: natural leather, synthetic leather, and fabric.

Natural leather is known for its durability and classic appeal, but it is also expensive and can require regular maintenance. Because leather is made from tanned animal hide, it retains some of the same qualities. It has the elasticity to resist tears and puncture damage but is prone to scratches. 

The ease with which leather can scratch is important to keep in mind if you are traveling with pets or small children. When accidents are almost certain to happen, easy cleaning and durability should be high on your list of priorities.

Due to its expense, maintenance needs, and comparatively hefty weight, natural leather can be difficult to find in standard RV chairs. If you decide to go with natural leather, you may need to invest in custom upholstery.

Synthetic leathers are lighter and generally less expensive than natural leather while still offering the same general look and feel. Synthetics don’t have the same puncture and tear resistance, but they are far more scratch-resistant.

Not all synthetic leathers are of the same quality, though. Most synthetic leathers fall into one of three categories: bonded leather, polyvinyl chloride, or polyurethane. You will rarely see them listed under those terms, though, so unless specified, we suggest researching brand names for different faux leathers to see which category they fall under.

Faux leathers made with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are the most durable overall. Yet, they are also expensive and stiff, meaning they take time to “break-in.”

Polyurethane (PU) faux leather is slightly less durable than polyvinyl chloride but still quite durable overall. A lower average price and a look and feel closer to natural leather has made this newer option popular.

Bonded leathers are created with a backing made from leather scraps in a process similar to how wood pulp is made into paper. This material is later coated with polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane, creating a material with an initial appearance and feel almost identical to natural leather at a vastly lower price. 

Yet, bonded leather is prone to peeling and fading, making it far less durable than the other options.

If leather or synthetic leather furniture is not for you, there are excellent upholstery fabrics available for RV chairs. Fabric remains durable and easy to clean while offering a wider array of available colors, patterns, and textures than leather, natural or synthetic. However, it will absorb moisture.

That an RV recliner chair needs to fit the space is obvious, but the amount of floor space taken up isn’t the only sizing consideration you need to take into account. 

Reclining furniture requires a certain amount of clearance to recline fully. RVs also can have small doors, and some models have far less open space when “collapsed” for the road. These are things you must consider. 

Take care when measuring the space available, including what is available when fully collapsed for travel if you have an expandable RV. Don’t forget to check your door clearance before searching.

Loading heavy furniture is never pleasant, but weight is an extra important factor when shopping for RV furniture. Everything that goes into your RV affects its weight, which impacts not only your gas mileage but your ability to navigate some roads and bridges.

All furniture needs structural elements, but reclining furniture also has the added weight of the reclining mechanism and the motor for powered models. Recliner chairs and other reclining furniture can weigh far more than their stationary counterparts. This is something that can cost you over time if you fail to factor it into your decision.

RVs have to pack a lot of functions into every square inch of floor space, so RV furniture capable of serving multiple functions makes for a smart purchase.

Editor's Note (September 2023): This product review was originally written and published in 2021. To make sure we are still recommending the best products for your needs, we recently reviewed this story to make sure it is still accurate and that we stand by what we wrote. In addition to this original hands-on review, we also had the opportunity to test this product in The Lab. Thanks to its at-home and lab performance, it is still a top choice in The Best Zero-Gravity Chairs despite newer models and options being available on the market.

Zero gravity chairs are the more comfortable cousin of a camp chair . They’re not quite as portable or lightweight as a camp chair, but when you’re relaxing around the fire, a zero gravity chair feels almost like you’re floating. With locks and pillows, you can adjust the recline and support based on your size and personal comfort preferences. I wanted to try out the affordable Caravan Canopy Zero Gravity Chair to see if it could offer the comfort of more expensive models. In the end, it offered small-scale comfort that this short lady loved.

The Caravan’s packaging was what I would call lacking. Only in that, there wasn’t a packing slip, plastic bag, or tag to be found on it. There’s nothing wrong with that except that the only identifiable information was the box label with my address on it. All I can say is, I hope you remember what you ordered to make sure you get the right chair, which I did, by the way. 

Confession—I tested this chair during the rainy season, so it became a living room accessory for a few weeks. No one in the family minded because it was so comfortable.

This chair folds down to 5 inches wide by 40 inches tall. Yes, that’s bigger than a camp chair, but it’s still small enough to slide into the garage for easy storage. You could also throw (or gently slide) it into a trailer or the back of a pickup truck for a day at the beach, park, or a camping trip . 

On to the most important part of any chair—comfort. Zero gravity chairs are a huge step up from a traditional camp chair. They’re sometimes a step up from some patio furniture and outdoor recliners, too, in my opinion. Zero gravity chairs, including this one, have a piece of fabric suspended on a frame via bungee cords. Those cords flex and give where you need them to, so people of different shapes and sizes can sit comfortably. You almost feel like you’re floating, hence the zero-gravity name. 

The Caravan feels amazing, even though it falls on the affordable end of the price scale. Confession—I tested this chair during the rainy season, so it became a living room accessory for a few weeks. No one in the family minded because it was so comfortable. My kids may or may not (definitely may) have fought to use it. If it didn’t make my living room look like a campsite, I would use it every day to lounge while reading a book. It’s that comfortable. Come summertime, my kids are going to have a hard time getting any time in this chair because mom is claiming it as her own!

The chair frame is about one inch smaller than average, making it a perfect option for someone like me who’s only 5’5”. I didn’t feel like I was drowning in the chair, and my feet could touch the foot bar. In most chairs, I have to scoot forward for my feet to touch the ground, not with the Caravan. 

On the downside, it wasn’t a great fit, though not uncomfortable, for my 5’11” husband. However, the chair has a 300-pound weight limit, so while height-wise, you may find yourself dangling off the end, it can safely hold a good amount of weight. 

The Caravan also provides a good amount of adjustability. The neck pillow adjusts using a velcro strap, and I loved it. Various members of my family tried out the Caravan, and everyone could move the pillow around to a comfortable position based on their height and comfort preferences. You can also remove the pillow and use it as lumbar support. 

Using force and body weight, you can push the chair into a reclined position. That position is also adjustable. Anywhere along the way to a full recline, you can lock the chair in place using the fingertip locking system that’s on either armrest. The locks are stiff but not difficult to manage. My arms were a little short to reach them, but as long as you don’t have T-rex arms, you’ll probably be fine. 

Is the Caravan Global Gravity Chair easy to fold? 

Folding down the Caravan is easy peasy. It takes two hands but, as long as you’ve got the locking mechanism open, the chair easily glides into a compact position. However, once it’s folded, it’s not the easiest to carry. It only weighs 17.5 pounds, so it’s not because of weight. It’s because the chair pops open while you’re carrying it. If there’s anything missing from this chair, it’s a locking mechanism that holds the chair closed when folded. 

Is the chair water-resistant? 

Since this chair is meant for outdoor use , it’s made with a quick-dry seat material. It dries out quickly on its own in a dry environment, so as long as it can dry out, water isn’t an issue. However, like pretty much everything else, you shouldn't leave it wet and folded for days because mold could start growing. However, water isn’t going to ruin the fabric or cause the coated frame to rust.  

The water resistance also makes the chair easy to clean . You can pretty much spray and wipe it down to remove most debris and stains. 

Is the Caravan Canopy Zero Gravity Chair worth the price?

The Caravan is one of the more affordable zero gravity chairs on the market, retailing for around $92. Considering the comfort and ease of use, yes, it’s definitely worth the price. I would trade all of my camp chairs for more of these in a heartbeat. 

Caravan Canopy Zero Gravity Chair vs. Frontgate Original Mesh Zero-Gravity Recliner

The Caravan and Frontgate zero gravity chairs are very similar in design, weight, and style. The differences lie in width (the Frontgate is slightly wider), pillow design (the Frontgate’s is awesome), and price (the Frontgate is not so cool here, it retails for around $229). 

The size makes the Frontgate Original Mesh Zero-Gravity Recliner a better option if you’re over 6 feet tall. The pillow is attached to the frame on a front track that lets you move it from the top for neck support to the bottom for lumbar support without removing it. The only other difference between the two is the price. The Frontgate costs more than twice the Caravan. While Frontgate’s attached pillow is awesome, the steep price difference isn’t worth it. 

I would for sure choose the Caravan if I was choosing between the two. The Frontgate feels a little more luxurious, but I would prefer to get two Caravans for every one Frontgate.

You can't go wrong with this affordable chair.

The Caravan Canopy Zero Gravity Chair is comfortable, lightweight for a zero gravity chair, and includes great recline and pillow adjustability. The affordable price makes it a no-brainer.

RV Couches or Residential Furniture?

For most RVers looking to replace the couch, a residential couch is the way to go. They are lighter, available in more styles and colors, and more affordable.

Residential couches are normally heavy enough to not move much while in motion, but you will likely want to install D-rings with straps to tie down your couch to prevent it from tipping while in motion.

Made in Stroud: a brief history of the Safari caravan

From the 1940s to the early 80s Stroud was home to one of the country’s premier caravan manufacturers, Safari. The company was founded in 1946 by Jim Pearman and operated from a workshop in Cainscross where the Co-op store now stands.

In the early days the company produced just one model, the Minor, a nine-foot two-berth caravan. The company moved from Cainscross to Bowbridge in around 1957 or 58, to a 23,000 square-foot site at the former Eagle Brewery (behind the British Oak pub on London Road), as former employee Mike Lane recalls: “I started there in December 1958 and the company hadn’t been there very long.

“I worked as a polisher – it was the best place I ever worked – we had fun, they were a good bunch of lads and we earned good money, too.”

Safari caravans earned a reputation as a quality product, and the hand-made construction was carried out to a high standard. The interiors were made by skilled craftsmen: “Fittings were built on solid oak frames and doors were either oak veneer on plywood or solid oak,” said Mike.

Brian Miller, who runs the Classic Safari Caravans group on Facebook, which has 990 members, said: “They are great caravans, always in the top three of British caravan manufacturers.

“At their height they employed 40 staff and were producing seven caravans a week. It’s the only classic caravan with real style – the distinctive mollycroft roof design – the raised section – started in early railway carriages and carried on to showmen’s caravans. Safari was the last manufacturer to use that style.”

“They were the best in the world,” said Mike, “The 17/S model, a 17-foot four-berth caravan, is the ‘Rolls-Royce’. It was the most expensive (it cost £8,129 in 1982) and had an end bedroom. It had thick carpet, good upholstery – all top-notch stuff.

“Safari was all coach built, so it was twice the price of a Bailey caravan.”

However, the industry was changing and by the 1960s and 70s many smaller makers were being bought out. “Sprite started buying lots of independent manufacturers,” said Brian.

“A company called Cosalt bought Safari in 1968 for an estimated £180,000 and production continued in Stroud until 1982 when operations were moved to Grimsby. By 1985 all the traditional manufacturers had been taken over by big operations.”

It’s estimated 6,000 Safari caravans were produced between 1948 and 1982. The classic Safari design was replaced in 1981 by the XL range, a Safari in name only. The last caravan to carry the Safari name was launched in 1985, built on the lines of an Abbey Executive caravan.

The Eagle Mill Close housing development was built on the site of the factory in the 1990s, and there are now very few clues it ever stood there.

There is still a solid fan base for Safari caravans: “I’d suggest around 500 still exist,” said Brian, who compiles a register of the serial numbers of existing Safaris. “There are a couple in Australia, exported by English owners, and also caravans in New Zealand, the USA, Canada, Sweden, Belgium and Holland.”

Until the pandemic struck there were regular classic caravan shows around the country, and also mainland Europe, with Safari caravans featuring prominently.

Brian’s Facebook group provides advice and support for owners, as well as a wealth of historical information about Safari, and the number still used and loved by their owners is testament to the quality of the caravans, the youngest of which is fast approaching middle age.

This bench is absolutely gorgeous. It arrived all in one piece carefully packed perfect condition. So much more impressive in person than in the photographs it is going to look absolutely beautiful at the base of the ivory linen upholstered bed I am expecting to receive next week from Wayfare. I will update the photos when that arrives. Very glamorous but not over the top, très chic.
