Enjoy one of their many drool-worthy drinks, including their specialty coffee; we’re huge fans of the “S’More Mocha”, which is as chocolatey and delicious as it sounds, as well as their list of tea mistos. There’s also always an extensive selection of freshly baked pastries, desserts, and other sweets to choose from as well as a breakfast and lunch menu, so make sure to arrive at Higher Ground hungry!

Best Coffee Shops in Calgary

woman holding a coffee with latte art in the shape of a heart at Deville Coffee

There is no shortage of excellent coffee in Calgary. Our city is full of cafés brewing up cup after cup of beautiful coffee, often sourced and roasted by the very companies serving it. Whether you’re looking for a light meal or a public space to hunker down with your laptop to get some work done, these cafés are all worth spending some time in.

Alforno Bakery and Café

With multiple locations throughout the city, the Teatro Group’s Alforno Café offers plenty to eat, but it’s also a great place to just hang out and have a hot drink. The bright and spacious café serves a full range of espresso drinks (plus drip coffee) and, in addition to more substantial pizzas and pastas, plenty of snacks and light bites.

The 17th Avenue S.W. Analog café is a bustling Beltline hot spot, but you can also grab a great cup of Analog’s coffee in several other locations like Southcentre Mall and the Calgary Farmer’s Market . Over on 17th Ave, the seats are packed in tight, and the espresso machine is always buzzing. Analog’s single origin beans are all ethically sourced directly from the farmers who grow them and roasted in Calgary before becoming a rich cup of pour over coffee or an espresso-based drink.

Calgary Heritage Roasting Company

Located in the historic brick Snowden building,  Calgary Heritage Roasting Company is as bold and rustic in style as it is in taste. The shop’s giant coffee roaster sits right at the front entrance, creating beans that showcase savoury, chocolatey, nutty, smoky, caramel and toffee tasting notes, avoiding citrus, acidic, or floral flavours. CHRC is all about connecting with nature and has committed to plant one tree on Canadian soil for every bag of coffee sold, with the goal of planting one million trees by 2030.

Café Gravity

An Inglewood community hub that has branched out to several locations throughout the central part of the city, Gravity is a top spot for all sorts of meetups. The cafés are spacious and comfortable, the coffee is expertly brewed, and the food (quick meals like paninis, soup, and chili) always hits the spot. The Inglewood location also doubles as a wine bar and live music venue, hosting regular shows featuring local artists.

Caffé Beano

A Beltline mainstay since 1990, Caffé Beano is an absolute Calgary institution. The café almost always has a large group of locals (and more than a few dogs) gathered outside, with more people sitting inside the café’s roomy back room. The muffins are fresh-baked and the coffee is strong, which is exactly what you need in a good coffee shop. Well, that and one of Beano’s much-beloved chocolate espresso milkshakes.

Congress Coffee

Harkening back to the glorious coffeehouses of 1990s Calgary, this little neighbourhood spot in the Tuxedo neighbourhood is designed for unpretentious hangouts. Coffee and lemonade are on deck, along with sandwiches and other casual meals and snacks. In true ‘90s style, Congress also acts as an arts space and music venue with special events taking place throughout the week.

Deville Coffee

A Calgary-born chain that has now expanded into British Columbia, the now ubiquitous Deville has grown steadily, thanks to its mission to bring high-quality direct trade coffee beans to the masses. Multiple coffee roasts are always on the menu complete with tasting notes and information about the beans’ origins, allowing coffee lovers to make choices that will suit their personal tastes and sense of social responsibility.

Higher Ground

Serving organic coffee that is fair trade, bird friendly, and rainforest alliance certified, this large Kensington coffee house is a relaxing spot to get some work done or visit with friends. The list of coffee and tea creations is long (and delicious — it’s hard to find a more creative collection of caffeinated drinks) and the café also serves an extensive selection of sandwiches and salads as well as a tasty all-day breakfast.

I Love You Coffee Shop

Inspired by Japanese jazz bars, vinyl records, cheeky humour, and a strong community-minded spirit, the irreverently named I Love You Coffee Shop is a cool little hideaway for anyone looking for the polar opposite of a corporate coffee chain. The coffee and Montreal-style bagels are good, but the clubhouse-like space and laid-back attitude are what make this spot a real inner-city gem.

A shop for serious coffee lovers, the talented team from Monogram were winning national barista awards before most Calgarians had even heard of their then-tiny coffee house. These days, Monogram has grown to include four locations, serving some of the best brews in the city. The coffee brand has extended its dedication to excellence with Primary Colours , a full-service restaurant and café hybrid in the Britannia neighbourhood.

Neighbour Coffee

Part of the Our Daily Brett family of local businesses, Neighbour (or NHBR as the logo reads) has two locations, providing the communities of Altadore and Inglewood with tasty coffee and wholesome fresh meals and snacks that go well beyond your average grab ‘n’ go sandwiches. In the evenings the back room of the Inglewood location turns into Business and Pleasure , one of the city’s best neighbourhood bars.

Phil and Sebastian

One of Calgary’s best known coffee brands, when it first launched in 2006 Phil and Sebastian set the bar for what a cool café could be in this city. Owned by two actual guys named Phil and Sebastian, P&S makes distinctive tasting coffee from beans they roast themselves. They’ve also has created over half a dozen comfortable and stylish locations in which to drink it, including a flagship location in the East Village’s Simmons Building .

Rosso Coffee Roasters

Another café that sources and roast its own beans, with five locations, Rosso has become the go-to for many Calgarians in need of a premium coffee fix. The shops are all chic but cozy and offer top-notch snacks and treats — if grass roots vibes and a high standard of excellence is what you’re seeking, Rosso is the place to find it.

Sought x Found Coffee Roasters

A small boutique roastery in the Crescent Heights neighbourhood, Sought x Found strives to present coffee in a way that the special aspects of the beans and the roast shine to their fullest potential. Different coffees are presented each month along with notes about the bean varietals, processes used to roast the coffee, history of the farm, and other facts that help each cup tell its unique story.

One of the most surprising things about Calgary isn’t the big sky or the bison roaming within minutes of the city limits: it’s the deeply knowledgeable (and, some might say, obsessive) speciality coffee scene.

Since 2007, when engineers Phil and Sebastian opened up their first café with a vow to get more people to drink good coffee, the city has been home to most of Canada’s award-winning brewers, baristas and roasters. The focus is on the coffee terroir, the processing (natural, honey, washed, unwashed, anaerobic) and the customer experience, and a sincere desire to match the drink with the guest. Cafés here are equally committed to local producers, for everything from milk and butter to the preserves schmeared on their sourdough.

Here is a selection of cafés and roasters worth exploring in person – or ordering from online.

Phil Robertson and Sebastian Sztabyzb, founders of the city’s original third-wave coffee roaster, are perfectionists. 16 years ago, they started putting roasting dates on their coffee, brought in equipment never before seen in the city, and got customers to think about coffee attributes as they would think about wine. It was revolutionary then, and they’re still doing it. Nine current locations span a range of vibes, including the high-ceilinged roastery in the iconic Simmons Building (there are tours). All offer meticulously developed, consistently high-quality coffee prepared by top baristas, with flavours ranging from comforting, warm, popular brews to citrusy, floral and more complex options. Plus: non-alcoholic coffee cocktails and seasonal drinks like Saskatoon berry lemonade. Check out their Hoopla doughnuts, too. [ Various locations ]

Rosso Coffee Roasters

From their first café in an iron foundry, Rosso understood that quality and commitment needed to span all their processes – including providing welcoming spaces for the communities they serve. Rosso was the first café in North America to use the La Marzocco Linea PB-ARB, they say; another first is their state-of-the-art Sōvda bean sorter, used for green and roasted beans alike. “The coffee culture in Calgary is insane,” says managing partner Jessie Attrell. “Sorting the beans makes the cups just a little better.” Besides the pride in having award-winning baristas on staff, Attrell is equally excited about the all-day breakfast on offer, local pastries from Butter Block, and this summer’s seasonal drink: the pop tart, featuring espresso, oat milk and strawberries. “We want to positively impact people’s lives through coffee,” says Jeremy Ho, the co-founder of Monogram. A Phil and Sebastian alumnus, Ho, along with Ben Put (Canada’s 2023 Barista Champion) and Justin Eyford, think about everything from the diverse relationships they have with the producers of their environmentally sustainable coffees to ensuring inclusive and equitable spaces for Monogram’s four cafés spread across the city. The downtown outlet at Fifth Avenue Place sports an Honour Bar (pour from the tap and be on your way); Britannia showcases over a dozen espresso varieties, plus the Atlas Program, bringing international roasters – most recently from Colombia, Brazil, Japan and the Netherlands – in person to feature their coffees. Monogram’s Primary Colours Café is right next door for a snack, meal, freshly baked in-house pastries, all-Canadian ingredients and natural wine. [ Various locations ]

Dawit Wubie travelled to Ethiopia from Calgary in 2012 to join his sister’s coffee roasting business in Addis Ababa. “He was a natural roaster,” says his wife and co-owner Danait Tesfay. “We grew up with coffee and know when it’s ready.” Wubie returned to Calgary intent on sharing Ethiopian coffee with the city’s coffee lovers, and in 2019 the couple began selling their small-batch hand-roasted coffee at the Calgary Farmers Market. Now the proud owners of two cafés (and an industrial roaster), the couple remain close to their roots, working with supplier Metad in Ethiopia to ensure equitable and women-friendly practices at the source. Bono offers a free Jebena Buna (Ethiopian coffee ceremony) on the first Sunday of the month at their new Bridgetown location; there may be popcorn involved, along with pastries baked in-house from family-owned Eclipse . Paradigm Spark

Award-winning barista David Kim started off studying astronomy and space but ended up grounded in the coffee world as a competitive barista and latte artist looking to reduce the gap between competition and day-to-day service. Another Phil and Sebastian alumnus, Kim is motivated by precision, with his roastery offering customers an exceptionally curated experience in his two-year-old café, Paradigm Spark. Regular options include 15 varieties of espresso, flights of either three coffees in very different styles (“so people can discover the impact of a variety on the flavour,” he says) or three different varieties from one producer. Kim regularly serves washed process and two different types of natural process coffee on his roster, making sipping his brews a true learning experience.

The medium and dark roasts from Calgary Heritage Roasting are more than just something to get you going: former firefighters and founders Jamie Parker and Mike Wenzlawe want to connect you to the Canadian outdoors, too. CHRC plants one tree for every 340g bag sold and has now planted over 100,000 in the forests of British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba. Their signature Flash Fuel instant organic coffee, sold in retro-matchbox packaging with individual sachets at their café and online is their way of bringing their coffee to your camping (or travel) experience.

Kitty Chan and Caleb Leung want to make a match for everyone who comes into their sole Crescent Heights location, encouraging patrons to explore the different flavours and characteristics that drive Caleb’s Q-grade roasting profiles. Flights are a big part of the fun here: three coffees one way (entirely different beans done as a pourover), or what they call One Coffee Three Ways, the same bean served as pourover, espresso, and cortado. Leung has mapped out taste profiles of what they’re serving, from the more fruity to more chocolatey, changing the flights every month. Organic milk from local dairy Vital Green and sweet and savoury food options, with in-house jams, salsas and syrups where they “keep playing with flavours” round out the menu.

11 Outstanding Independent Calgary Coffee Shops and Cafes

November 15, 2022 By Bailey Storey Leave a Comment

Calgary coffee shops and cafes.

These days, it’s hard to walk more than one block without coming across a café or two. Particularly, Calgary is known for its constantly evolving coffee culture, so whether you are looking to discover a unique local business or are fueling for a long day ahead, visiting one of the many Calgary coffee shops should definitely be on your list. There are so many options out there, and no two independent coffee shops are exactly the same, so it can be hard to know which spots are worth all the hype.

The following is a guide to help you experience the best Calgary coffee shops and cafes that the city has to offer – from fair-trade roasteries to popular neighbourhood hangouts. Maybe you appreciate a delicious shot of espresso, or you’re on the search for something unique like a maca latte from Phil & Sebastian’s brand-new seasonal menu. Either way, there is no shortage of places to fill your caffeine (and sweet tooth) fix.

Phil and Sebastian Coffee Roasters are easily one of the top Calgary coffee shops and cafes.

Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters

Locations: Multiple

In August of this year, Phil & Sebastian opened their Calgary Farmer’s Market West location, delighting locals who aren’t always able to make the commute downtown. Here, you can take a break from shopping for produce and locally-made goods to settle down with a brew-to-order cup of coffee and a house-made Hoopla Donut. Or, if you’re already in the Christmas Spirit, you can snag yourself a gingerbread latte.

There are also many Phil & Sebastian Calgary coffee shops to explore downtown. In the East Village, the historic Simmons building houses both the headquarters and the roastery. Visitors to the Simmons café can watch as raw coffee beans are roasted in a refurbished 55-year-old drum roaster. If you are looking for a cup of coffee that is fair trade, Phil & Sebastian has you covered. They have always traded directly with farmers and continue to launch sustainability initiatives in the regions they source from.

Monogram Coffee can be found at many Calgary coffee shops.

Monogram Coffee

Locations: Altadore, Fifth Avenue Place, Britannia, University District

For coffee enthusiasts that appreciate an inventive menu, Monogram is a must-visit café. With four locations that range from the Northeast University District to Britannia, you likely won’t have to travel far. There is plenty unique about Monogram coffee, the most noticeable being each café’s open space and a monochrome, contemporary aesthetic – but there’s more than meets the eye. A passion for taking care of the community and providing warmth through coffee coalesced into a business, and today the priority remains to provide high-quality, responsibly sourced beans to visitors.

While picking up your coffee, make sure to include a bag of beans in your order. Monogram covers a wide range of styles and profiles, from the comfortable medium roast to exotic beans that come from experimental ways of processing and roasting.

Coffee is extra delicious in the cold winter months.

Sought and Found Coffee Roasters

Location: 916 Centre Street N

Just north of Calgary’s Prince’s Island Park, Sought and Found Coffee Roasters is the place to go if you’re looking to experience one of the smallest Calgary coffee shops. With just one location in the city, Sought and Found strives to honour the diversity and range of the coffee industry while serving some of the best in Calgary. The café’s design echoes these modest beginnings, with a cozy wood and brick interior and seating that offers a great view of the espresso bar. Essentially, this is the place to go if you’re looking for the ideal spot to sit down with a good book or to catch up with a friend.

Here, your coffee obsession does not have to end when you leave the café. Sought and Found offers a wide range of coffee subscription services, from the essentials to a more exotic collection of rare finds and unusual roasts, so you can enliven your inner barista while beans arrive straight to your doorstep.

Rosso can be found through Calgary, including inside the National Music Centre.

Rosso

If you were to ask any coffee-obsessed local of Calgary what one of their recommendations would be, Rosso would surely make that list. With locations as far North as Tuxedo Park and in trendy neighbourhoods like Inglewood, you likely don’t need to travel far to find a Rosso café. The Inglewood location in particular is a great spot for comfy seating and natural light, making it the ideal space for those looking for a quiet afternoon or to get some much-needed work done.

Rosso cafes may be numerous in Calgary; however, they have not let go of their passion for sourcing the best and most unique coffees from the 10 countries they’ve partnered with. A visit to their website shows that Rosso cares about the hard-working farmers and families behind the amazing coffee we experience.

Calgary coffee shops for book lovers.

Loophole Coffee Bar

Location: 1040 8 Ave SW

Just a block away from Calgary’s contemporary art gallery, Loophole coffee bar is the paradigm of a cozy coffee shop that makes you never want to leave. With a quaint storefront adorned by Edison bulbs and an intimate interior full of bar seating, this café offers more than a collection of in-house of treats and beverages.

For all the bookworms out there, Loophole shares a building with Sigla Books, an independent bookstore offering some unique novels and gifts. After shopping, guests are welcome to take a seat and enjoy a fair-trade cup of coffee and a homemade chocolate chip cookie.

Philosophy is better with a hot cup of coffee.

Philosaphy

Location: 17th Ave

Located in the middle of one of Calgary’s most popular streets, Philosaphy takes both its name and atmosphere from the early-modern traditions of educators and philosophers as they gathered in the first Western coffee shops to contemplate and socialize. It makes sense that the café’s open concept, a multitude of seating, and contemporarily rustic design make it the perfect location for anything from catching up with friends to settling down for an afternoon of work. Philosaphy’s mission statement is that they hope to draw people from all walks of life to collect and enjoy fair-trade coffee and delicious treats.

We aren’t in the 17 th century anymore, so the creative team behind Philosaphy’s menu is constantly coming up with innovative and delicious drinks to try, like the lavender spirulina London fog. However, those of us who are diligent subscribers to the classics still have a reason to pay a visit. In addition to deliciously poured espresso, Philosaphy offers brewed-to-order coffee that they make with two gilded V60 drip decanters.

There's something beautiful about a pure shot of espresso.

Socality House

Location: 17th Ave

Locals who are aware of Socality house are most likely to consider themselves regulars to this café, itself located just across the street from 17 th Ave’s Tomkins Park. And who wouldn’t want to frequent this place? At first, it may seem like a hole-in-the-wall, but as you pass the espresso bar you will reach a spacious work and gathering area, which seems to continuously unfold and is accompanied by couches, benches, and coffee tables. Additionally, Socality House has an entire upper level and a patio with more comfy seating. It is all topped off with an artistic, modern atmosphere.

The owners make it clear that Socality House is designed to facilitate a sense of community within Calgary. In addition to hosting local pop-ups, the café’s space is home to a variety of events including workshops and classes. Additionally, Socality only uses Monogram coffee beans to make all their espresso-based drinks!

Why do hot drinks go so good with doughnuts and other sweets?

Deville

Locations: Multiple

Whether you are commuting through Calgary’s plus 15 or discovering the trendy neighbourhood of Kensington, you’re likely only a few steps away from a chocolate grenache latte. Deville Coffee boasts several Calgary coffee shops (and even some beyond), and each café is stocked with fair-trade coffee beans and treats sourced from local bakeries. And, since their beginnings in 2008, Deville continues to make ingredients like its vanilla bean syrup and chocolate grenache in-house.

Each Deville Café has a stylish interior that will intrigue you to stay a while. Marble countertops, minimalist colour palettes, and gilded accents afford the atmosphere with a reimagined art deco style. This is certainly the place to be if you’re looking for a bit of inspiration for that next artistic project. The 17 th Ave location in particular boasts floor-to-ceiling windows that add tons of natural sunlight to your afternoon coffee break.

Calgary coffee shops and cafes.

Neighbour Coffee

Locations: Marda Loop, Inglewood

From time to time, we all need a good meal to go with our coffee. Neighbour Coffee has you covered. With a crowd-favourite location in Marda Loop and a brand new one that has just opened in Inglewood this summer, there’s no excuse to not pay a visit. Neighbour has two distinct objectives when it comes to their impact on the coffee community: to provide a chill spot for the neighbourhood to come together and to offer both good coffee and good food. Their menu has anything from sourdough toast (baked from East End Bakery) to sweet or savoury breakfast bowls.

Regardless of what you get, you can be certain that it’s going to be fresh. Neighbour is the sister café to Our Daily Brett, a Calgary-based market that reflects the objective of sourcing local and colourful ingredients.

Analog has its origins back in 2011 at the original Calgary Farmer’s Market, where it continues to flourish as the place to sit down with a great cup of single-origin coffee. Their second location opened at 17 th Ave, in the heart of the city. If you have ever traversed 17 th , then you’d notice Analogue’s storefront populated by avid coffee-goers lounging beneath the black awning. There’s a reason why people gravitate here, and it goes beyond the café’s uniquely vintage aesthetic.

Analogue prides itself on its talented staff, responsibly sourced beans, and high-quality equipment to ensure every bit of quality is passed onto the customer. And, in addition to great coffee, Analogue offers a diverse selection of pastries at each location that is all made from scratch – including the deliciously-named Nutella croissant.

Gravity is also one of the best Calgary coffee shops.

Gravity Espresso & Wine Bar

Some of us know that one of the best combinations can be a great shot of espresso and a glass of wine. This is where Gravity Espresso & Wine Bar shines. Also known as Café Gravity , they boast several locations throughout the city and prides itself on being the perfect place to relax either alone or with a group of friends.

High-end coffee paired with a carefully curated wine menu means you get the best of both worlds. It also means that Café Gravity will provide a great experience regardless of when you chose to pop in. Also, did we mention the cheese board? Like all of Café Gravity’s options, the cheese has been carefully selected to pair with the rest of the diverse menu.

They have three locations now but the original location is in trendy Inglewood. If you like lattes, we highly recommend their Dolce Latte.

It's hard to beat a delicious latte.

Yes, we're serious

Want some of the best coffee in the world? Go to Calgary

Yes, we're serious.

When I try to tell people that coffee is having a moment in Canada, people quite often don’t take me seriously. While the third wave coffee scene does not seem to have the sophistication of the modern wine industry or the rising power of the craft-beer boom, if people took a moment to really get to know the coffee industry, they would understand just how complex it really is.

Canadians are quite well known for their coffee consumption, with Canada ranking #1 out of 80 countries according to the CBC . And while Canada’s coffee-shop scene is undeniably not as large as the one in the United States, the showcase of commitment, talent, and passion from folks who have dedicated themselves to making and creating good coffee from bean to cup is beautiful to watch in action. One city, in particular, has taken on the crown as the semi-official birthplace of the modern Canadian coffee industry: Calgary, Alberta. Here are my picks for cafes and roasters to visit when you’re in Calgary:

Phil & Sebastian

This shop has five different locations, each quite different from the other. Out of all the locations that I visited while on my trip, the best had to be at Marda Loop (2043 33rd Ave SW). Offering a full beer and wine program and delicious food, the cafe itself was super bright and spacious, with a cozy vibe. The roaster started in 2004 with a partnership between Phil Robertson & Sebastian Sztabzyb, two travelling engineers who fell in love with the specialty coffee they had each tried while abroad. They decided to bring it back to Calgary, and their cafes have since become some of the best in Canada. When you visit, you have the option to get a cup of drip from their Fetco, or just check out their rotating menu of by-the-cup options.

Monogram Coffee

Monogram started as a quirky pop-up in 2014, put on by now-co-owners Ben Put, Justin Eyford, and Jeremy Ho. The trio — who, incidentally, met while working together at Phil & Sebastian — decided to strike out on their own, and now boast three cafes and a roasting partnership with Transcend Coffee. Each of their three cafe spaces are unique and different from one another, but their brand new Brittania location (800 49th Ave SW) is the crown jewel. This space acts as a “concept” store for guest roasters on a short-term residency basis. Each of their roasters will walk you through their beans and help you decide on what is on the menu with ease. They also have an exceptional seasonal menu — which was sold out on more than one of my visits, so get there early!

Rosso Coffee Roasters

The day that we went to visit Rosso Coffee, Cole Torode was competing at the World Barista Championships. The roaster and cafe has seven locations throughout Calgary, but for this visit, we decided to visit the original location (803 24 Ave SE). It’s a smaller space but has a huge 12-kilogram Probat roaster, plus a retail space to shop from. The cafe space is super relaxed, with baked goods and sandwiches, which are freshly made at the company’s commissary. All batch is brewed in-house with a Fetco and the baristas can pull a consistent espresso shot. If it’s still available, try out Torode’s lactic geisha coffee, which he used for the World Barista Championships.

Analog Cafe

With 40 years of roasting experience, Fratello Coffee is far and away the oldest of Calgary’s established roasters. The reason Analog was launched was so Fratello could get their coffee into the hands of consumers and they could have a direct space to educate and work closely with their customers on a day-to-day basis. Located in the heart of the 17th Avenue, Analog’s staff pulls a pretty mean shot. Lattes are perfectly Instagrammable and this space has tons of windows, so you best believe that you can grab that shot for the ’gram.

Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters in Calgary, Alberta

  • Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters

Phil & Sebastian actually has a really cool background story , and it’s a company founded by two engineers.

They roast their own coffee at their roasting facility attached to their East Village café, and you can actually do a roasterie tour!

They’ve got several locations across Calgary, each with their own different style and aesthetic – I love the Marda Loop and Stephen Avenue locations.

I adore their Dulce Latte, which features a double shot of espresso, steamed milk, and dulce de leche.

LOCATION: Various locations

  • Monogram Coffee

Monogram is definitely one of the coolest coffee chains in Calgary, and each of their locations has its own industrial charm.

They roast their own coffee, which they serve alongside coffee from other local roasters.

Go for their classic Batch Brew (using seasonal batch coffee) or try one of their seasonal drinks, like their Almond Blossom Latte (with homemade almond floral syrup).

If you visit their Britannia location, you can get their Espresso Milkshake, which is blended with locally-made Made by Marcus vanilla soft serve!

Fun fact: Monogram actually started out as a pop-up coffee cart, and they now have a few locations across Calgary, including their OG location in Altadore.

  • Analog Coffee

Analog serves up their own locally-roasted coffees, with beans sourced directly from growers.

This beloved local coffee chain has 6 locations across Calgary, with a few more in the works.

My fave is their Mahogany location – it’s super bright and cute!

  • Rosso Coffee Roasters

Rosso was actually one of Calgary’s first specialty cafés, and they now serve up their delicious locally-roasted coffees at 5 locations across Calgary.

Their Inglewood café is their flagship, and my fave locations are the Tuxedo and 17th Avenue locations!

I love that they also use eco-friendly bags for their coffee beans, which are made with compostable and renewable materials!

  • Euphoria Cafe

Euphoria is a family-owned café serving up locally-roasted coffee from Rosso Coffee Roasters, fresh house-baked pastries, and made-to-order sandwiches.

I love that they offer all kinds of different internationally-inspired creations, from their drinks to their food.

You’ll find fun drink creations like their Australian Iced Coffee, Vietnamese Affogato, and Blood Orange & Espresso Sparkler.

They also source pastries, breads, and other goods from other local businesses in Calgary, which I think is really cool!

They have food options for a variety of diets, whether you’re gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, paleo, or keto.

LOCATION: 8 Varsity Estates Cir NW #110, Calgary, AB

Pastries and coffee at Philosafy Coffee in Calgary, Alberta

Philosafy Coffee

Philosafy is a cool and cozy spot in the Beltline neighbourhood with all the industrial vibes, and their front patio is adorable.

You’ll find all the classic espresso drinks, alongside fun drinks like their Nitro Chai (amazing), Lavender London Fog, or Beetroot Latte.

They roast their coffee in small-batches using ethically and consciously-sourced beans from around the world, which is pretty cool for such a small and independent coffee shop!

They also name their beans after different philosophers, which is fun.

LOCATION: 632 17 Ave SW, Calgary, AB

Mocha Latte from MobSquad Cafe in Calgary, Alberta

  • MobSquad Café

If you’re looking for a great spot in Calgary to get some work done, MobSquad is the perfect coffee shop to visit.

They’ve got plenty of seating, including booths, shared tables, and bar seats, with tons of outlets to charge all of your things.

There’s also free wifi and a ping pong table if you’re up for a game or two.

We stopped in before grabbing lunch, and Adam and I enjoyed a v delicious cup of their Mocha Latte.

Calgary skyline view from MobSquad Café in Calgary, Alberta

The café is on the 21st floor, so you get super nice views of Calgary!

If you’re looking for even more great views in the city, you’ll definitely want to visit the Calgary Tower .

LOCATION: 150 9 Ave SW #2100, Calgary, AB

  • Gravity Espresso & Wine Bar

This family-run business serves up Phil & Sebastian brews and homemade goods by day, and local wines and craft beers by night.

They make some of the best carrot cake in Calgary, if you’re a fan of carrot cakes!

You can find them in the Beltline (my fave), Inglewood, and Eau Claire neighbourhoods.

They also host live performances at their Inglewood location several nights a week, if you’re in the mood for live music!

At Bono Coffee, we are committed in developing exceptional specialty coffee. Bono Coffee is a family owned business based in Calgary, sharing our deep-rooted Ethiopian coffee culture to our community.

Growing up in Ethiopia, Bono Coffee founders, Dawit Wubie and Danait Tesfay have first hand experience in the daily life of hand roasting coffee and transforming it into the most magical cup of coffee ever tasted. It all started in 2012, when Dawit traveled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for business venture and joined his sister in the coffee roasting business and supplying it to local shops and stores. From there, his passion for coffee flourished and he made it his goal to bring Ethiopian coffee to his community, here in Calgary and to the world. Having to start a family, Dawit’s coffee dream was put on hold. In 2019 Dawit together with Danait decided to start a small batch coffee roasting company and supplied it to his community within various farmers markets. Bono Coffee Roasters was born and now people everywhere can experience that magical tasting cup of coffee. With amazing community support and feedback, Bono Coffee is committed to grow and serve the local community.

Making a difference

We deeply value our farmer and supplier that consists of 70% women employees. They also ensure that each farmer is paid fairly through the out-growers program while supporting their community by building roads, hospitals and schools.

It is no secret that the worlds most delicate, complex and finest specialty coffee comes from Ethiopia, where our deep-rooted coffee culture comes from. We believe our coffee does not only make a great tasting cup of coffee but should be means to bridge coffee farmers to their communities and individuals.

Working directly with farmers and producers, with the goal of sustainable and profitable growth is our core value. Bono Coffee gives you more than just a cup of coffee, it gives you a piece of Ethiopian culture.

These breweries and distilleries will let you tour their facilities and taste their adult-only product. It’s a perfect activity for locals and visitors.

Eau Claire Distillery's tasting room is open Wednesday through Sunday.

Eau Claire Distillery’s tasting room is open Wednesday through Sunday.

Many people flock to the West Coast to appreciate the newest brewpubs and distillers but in recent years, southern Alberta’s craft scene has become infinitely more interesting. For people wanting the craft experience closer to home, here are a few worthy destinations complete with tours and tastings for some added education.

Big Rock Brewery

This Calgary-based brewery is best known for its staple beers like Grasshopper and Traditional Ale but don’t overlook the rest of the Signature Series – including the Dunkelweizen and the Rhine Stone Cowboy Klsch Style Ale.  After all, Big Rock was one of the first breweries to make craft beer a “thing” in Alberta.

Tours: Tours typically last for 60 minutes every weekend and cost $25 per person.

Location: The brewery is in southeast Calgary just off 52 St. at 5555 76 Ave. S.E.

bigrockbeer.com

Eau Claire Distillery

Eau Claire Distillery has set up shop in the historic Turner Valley Theatre and the tours here are well worth the drive. The distillery has embraced what they call a “farm-to-glass” philosophy using Alberta grains and ingredients from the nearby Sheep River.

Tastings:  The tasting room is open Wednesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Private tours can be arranged.

Location:  60 kilometres southwest of Calgary in Turner Valley’s old movie theatre.

The Grizzly Paw

After a long day of hiking and adventuring, nothing tastes better than a beer at this Canmore establishment. Made with glacier-fed water, The Grizzly Paw brews mountain fresh beers that always guarantee to quench one’s thirst. First timers should definitely sample the Powder Hound Pilsner and Grumpy Beer Honey Wheat. This fall, the brewery is launching a distillery program.

Tours: 45 to 60 minute tours run every weekend. Admission is $15. Call ahead for private tours.

Location: The 20,000 square foot facility is at 310 Old Canmore Rd. in Canmore.

Park Distillery

Welcome to Park Distillery and Restaurant: Banff’s newest place to eat, drink and play. Tour the restaurant, take in the distilling process alongside master distiller Matt Hendricks and stay for a spirits tasting afterwards. Did we mention the spirits pair perfectly with the campfire-inspired menu? And,  P ark’s retail shop will soon have an assortment of in-house vodka, gin and whisky for purchase.

Tours:  Daily tours at 3:30 p.m. start in July. Tastings are $20.

Location: Right in the heart of Banff at 219 Banff Avenue.

Village Brewery

With aspirations to make community-minded ale, Village not only uses Alberta grains and barley, it also uses hops sourced from the neighbourhood of Bridgeland. These beers are ubiquitous within Calgary and are always a welcome addition to any outdoor city event.

Tours: One-hour tours run every Saturday and cost $15 per person.

Location:  The Brewery is in Manchester at 5000 12A St. S.E.

Wild Rose Brewery

Stopping for a meal or a drink at the Currie Barack’s brewpub is a popular thing to do in Calgary. However, to get the full experience, try the Beer 101 where your host will cover the brewery’s history, handy tasting tips and let you sample the classics like the Velvet Fog and WRaspberry Ale.

Tastings: Beer 101 tastings are $29 per person and start at 1 p.m. on Sundays. Reservations are required.

Location:  The tap room is still in an airport hangar in Currie Barracks at 4580 Quesnay Wood Dr. S.W.
