Thenmala, which lies at the conjunction of the Kollam-Shencottah road and the Trivandrum-Shencottah Road, boasts of India's first planned Ecotourism destination. It has 10 Ecotourism spots that cover the great hill ranges of Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta and Kollam districts. ‘Thenmala’ translates to 'Honey Hill' and so it is no surprise that high quality honey is exported from this area. The surrounding dense forest is also known for the timber that is in much demand across the country. Its terrain is dotted by forests, rubber and tree plantations and was selected by the World Tourism Organisation as one of the premier eco-friendly projects in the world. Thenmala is located 66 kms to the east of Kollam and is a treasure trove of activities. From boat rides to leisurely walks to even adventure sports like mountain biking and rock climbing, we have you covered on all fronts. The staff is well trained in providing the required help and information at all times. Visits to the Thenmala Dam are open to tourists and the view is renowned all across the area. The sway bridge available at the Leisure Zone is a favourite among children. The winding pathways, boardwalk and sculpture garden are all worth spending an evening at. The deep woods of Thenmala contain specially made tree huts where one can escape into a separate zone in the forest. It is a surreal experience, vouched for by all our visitors. Visits to Thenmala also include opportunities to observe some very unique spots. The Nakshatravanam, a nursery of trees that are considered sacred to the 27 constellations, has people thronging to it to take home a sapling of the tree related to their own birth star. A visit to the nearby Deer Rehabilitation Centre is a must as various species of deer are bred here. They are released into the forest when the population reaches optimum levels. Thenmala, located where the Trivandrum-Shencottah Road and the Kollam-Shencottah Road intersect, is proud to be India’s first planned Ecotourism destination. The large hill ranges of the Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, and Kollam districts are covered by ten ecotourism destinations. Since “Thenmala” means “Honey Hill,” it should come as no surprise that this region exports high-quality honey. The nearby lush forest is also renowned for producing wood, which is in high demand nationwide. The World Tourism Organization chose it as one of the top eco-friendly initiatives in the world. Its topography is filled with woods, rubber, and tree plantations.

Thenmala Ecotourism Promotion Society

The Kerala State Government’s Department of Tourism has administrative jurisdiction of TEPS. TEPS was incorporated on July 15, 1998, with its registered office in Thiruvananthapuram, under The Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific, and Charitable Societies Registration Act, 1955. TEPS is the designated organisation for the Department of Tourism’s development and promotion of ecotourism in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Pathanamthitta. The Honorable Minister for Tourism serves as the General Body’s Chairman and the Secretary to Government, Department of Tourism serves as its Vice Chairman. The General Body consists of 21 members. The Secretary to Government, Department of Tourism, who chairs the 14-member Executive Committee, is given authority.

Activities On Offer

1. culture zone.

The culture zone at Thenmala Ecotourism focusses on showcasing the best of Kerala's cuisine, crafts and natural wealth. Here are the activities on offer –

1. Soft trekking : A short (4km long) guided tour of the nearby wildlife sanctuary that keeps you on its periphery, instead of going inside. The timings are from 6am to 4pm and costs about Rs.100 per person.

Butterfly Park

2. Butterfly safari : A guided tour of the Butterfly Park give you an opportunity of seeing many varieties of butterflies in their natural habitat. You also learn about the plants that serve as hosts for butterflies that live in this small park.

3. Musical dancing fountain : An open air fountain that performs a synchronised ballet of water, sound and light to create a magical sight – what they call 'nature's dance'.

4. Nakshatravana : This small garden has 27 trees associated with the 27 birth stars, according to Indian astrology. Besides this aspect, the trees also have medical, social and aesthetic value. Stroll around to see their shapes and sizes.

Adventure Zone

Adventure Zone is the perfect place for adrenaline junkies. Rock climbing, elevated walkway, zorbing, river crossing, flying fox, mountain biking and archery and short range shooting are the activities on offer. Take the elevated walkway for a journey that winds through the canopy of trees and goes over rocky terrains bringing you closer to life at different heights.

Leisure Zone

The Leisure Zone is a forest conservatory with pathways suited for appreciating the nature around you in all its glory.

1. Hanging Bridge and Sculpture Garden : A Hanging Bridge, one of its kind in South India, leads to the Sculpture Garden – a garden built on the theme of 'man and nature', where are displayed carved stone art pieces depicting the relationship between man and nature.

Thenmala Parappar Dam and Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary are both part of the Leisure Zone and only a short distance away from the resort.

2. Thenmala Parappar Dam : It is the second largest irrigation project in Kerala and has the longest reservoir in the state. You can visit the dam between 8am to 5pm. Entry charges are Rs. 5 per person.

Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary

3. Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary : It is a 171-sqkm protected area and a home to rare birds, vipers and vivid foliage. Situated inside the sanctuary is a tropical treehouse, from where you can see the wildlife around.

Deer Rehabilitation Centre

4. Deer Rehabilitation Centre : It is a small centre established to cover the deer that stray out of the jungles into the urban areas. The centre accommodates three species of deer – Spotted Deer, Sambar Deer and Barking Deers.

Palaruvi waterfalls.

1. Palaruvi Waterfalls: Palaruvi means a stream of milk and this waterfall is Kerala's most pleasant waterfall falling down from a height of 300ft. Located at a distance of only 16km, Palaruvi Waterfalls is a great place to spend an afternoon.

Pathimoonnu Kannara Bridge

2. Pathimoonnu Kannara Palam: It is a 13 arc bridge built by the British using only rocks, jaggery and limestone. It is a very special bridge and a must see attraction for all Thenmala Ecotourism visitors.

Ambanad Hills

3. Ambanad Hills: This is one of the few tea plantations in the Kollam district of Kerala. It is an old estate that was established by the British. The entire area has many trees and plants and the air smells of spices. There is a factory that was set up by the British, but is still in use. The machinery inside the factory is also of the British era. Currently, the factory and estate belong to Travancore Rubber and Tea Company and various stages of tea production can be seen in the factory. This tea estate is only 32km from Thenmala Ecotourism.

Accommodation At Thenmala

They have 5 different types of accommodation.

1. The Bee Hive is a big dormitory with shared washrooms. The price is Rs. 140 a night for Indians and Rs. 300 for foreigners.

2. The Honey Comb is a cluster of budget homes. For Indian visitors, the prices are Rs. 700 for Non-AC rooms and Rs. 980 for AC cottages on weekdays. Rs. 1000 for Non-AC and Rs. 1400 for AC cottages on holidays and weekends. For international visitors, the prices are Rs. 1600 and Rs. 2000 for Non-AC and AC cottages.

3. Koodu are canopy huts on four poles with attached washrooms and balconies. Charges are Rs. 1400 on weekdays, Rs. 2000 on holidays and weekends and Rs. 2400 for international visitors.

4. The Cocoon or as they locally call it 'jungle camping' is a Swiss cottage tent with an attached bathroom and closets in the tent. They have double and triple occupancy options. Prices are Rs. 1400 on weekdays, Rs. 2000 on holidays and weekends and Rs. 2400 for international visitors.

5. The Nest is a group of Swiss cottage tents that are pitched near the riverfront. All facilities are the same as the Cocoon but the view of the river is what makes these tents more attractive. The prices are Rs. 1820 on weekdays, Rs. 2600 on weekends and holidays and Rs. 3000 for international visitors.

Thenmala Ecotourism in Kollam  was selected by the World Tourism Organisation as a premier eco-friendly project and is India's first planned Ecotourism destination.  In Malayalam "Then" means honey and "Mala" means hillock i.e. honey hills. The honey collected from Thenmala forest area is of good quality and of high medicinal value because of the unique floristic composition of the forests. 

The sway bridge here could be an exciting proposition, especially for children. Adding more variety and elegance to the landscape here is the Sculpture Garden, which has Man & Nature as its theme. The elevated walkway for a journey that winds through the canopy of trees and going over rocky terrains bringing one close to life at different heights. And still those who don't mind to give their body muscles a real work out can go for mountain biking, rock climbing and river crossing. The project area also has tree top huts and children's eco-park, riverside treks, and battery powered vehicle rides through the forest, enabling one to sight wildlife from a close distance.

Blessed with abundant natural vistas and rich bio-diversity, Thenmala offers plenty of opportunities to visitors for learning the importance and necessity of eco-tourism in India. This is India's first planned eco-tourism destination, which is popular due to its unique biological settings. Situated about 72 kms from Thiruvananthapuram, in the District of Kollam, this beautiful place is connected with the famous Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary at the foothills of the Western Ghats. The visitors who are already in love with the natural beauty of Kerela, will find this place irresistible.

The word Thenmala in Malayalam means 'Honey Hill,' where 'Then' means honey and 'Mala' means hill. It is believed that the honey collected from this area is of very good quality, all because of the fantastic biological settings in the area. At Thenmala Eco-tourism, the visitors get equal opportunities for fun, adventure, and leisure activities. The Promotional Society of Thenmala eco-tourism has divided the area into three major zones- Culture Zone, Leisure Zone, and Adventure Zone.

The cultural zone of this area offers restaurants, shopping complex, art galleries, and an open air musical dancing fountain. The visitors indulge in a variety of activities here like trying Kerela dishes, shopping memento, and grabbing information on Kerela's art and culture. The Leisure zone allows guests to try the boardwalk, which leads to the dam and to walk over a sway bridge, especially for children. For adventure enthusiast, the adventure zone offers an elevated walkway that winds through the canopy of trees. Mountain biking, rock climbing, and river crossing are other activities that can give your body muscles a real workout.

Other facilities offered at Thenmala Eco-Tourism are boat riding in the Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary, where one can have a look at a group of spotted deer, the sambar deer, barking deer, etc. The project area also has tree top huts, children's eco-park, riverside treks, battery powered vehicle rides, to take visitors through the exotic jungle. Thenmala project area also has high medicinal value because of the unique floristic composition of the forests. This unique place is easily accessible from Kollam through road and rail and be best visited in the months between September to March.
