GALLERY: A Guided Tour of the extraordinary and fascinating Museo Storico Alfa Romeo

' src=

Photography by Mark Riccioni

Later this year Alfa Romeo will celebrate its 114 th birthday. And while that figure isn’t exactly a milestone, it does outline just how much history the Milan-native outfit has behind it. One that spans even longer than the likes of Chevrolet, Toyota and Volkswagen.

Given this vast timeline, it’s unsurprising to learn that cars make up just a portion of its history. From trucks and tractors to planes and marine engines, Alfa Romeo has tried its hand at most engineering tasks. Not all have been especially successful, but when they get it right, you know the result is nothing short of a masterpiece.

alfa romeo tour

This isn’t your bog-standard, pop-up museum either. Located on the outskirts of Milan, the Arese plant was originally built for construction of the Giulia and GT models before becoming Alfa’s ‘official’ museum in 1976. In the decades after, it wasn’t what you’d call a ‘typical’ museum either, rather more a storage facility. Lack of signage also meant if you could find it, great. Come and have a look. But if you couldn’t? Try again another day… just not on Tuesdays when they’re closed.

With so many years to cover – including their centenary in 2010 – the need to create something special and celebratory became high on Alfa’s agenda. And, in 2024, it’s easily one of the best automotive museums on the planet. Documenting every step of the 114-year timeline for a mere 12 euros entrance fee. Thought you knew all of Alfa’s secrets? You’re in for a surprise here.

Spread across six floors and 52,000 sq. ft. Museo Storico Alfa Romeo was renovated and reopened on the 24 th of June 2015, 105 years (to the day) after the company was formed. The Arese factory continued producing cars right up until 2002 (with engine production lasting until 2006) but now its sole responsibility is preserving the rich and diverse history of one of Italy’s most-loved carmakers.

alfa romeo tour

Within Museo Storico Alfa Romeo lurks more than 250 cars, with around 70 on display at any given time depending on exhibition. But all of the cars here remain in full working order, a fact which is celebrated by the museum’s curator – Lorenzo Ardizio – who insists each car be started up at least once a year. In Lorenzo’s words, ‘cars are one of the few objects that are not static. They’re important and worth preserving. In fact, cars are classified by the Italian government in the same way as violins.’

In addition to the cars, Museo Storico Alfa Romeo also houses engines. Lots of engines. Land, air and even marine engines are strewn across the museum, reminding you of just how extensive the Alfa Romeo engineering catalogue really is. Around half are on display – usually adjacent to key cars or years – the other remain safely in storage on site. The sheer size and scale is often hard to comprehend, like the 18-cylinder, 2000-horsepower RC3 radial engine first built in 1937.

alfa romeo tour

That might sound like an eternity ago, but Alfa’s history goes even further than its 1910 inception. Before this year, there was SAID – Societa Anonima Italiana Darracq – a car company making automobiles in the outskirts of Milan. Unfortunately, these cars weren’t really up to scratch with many struggling to navigate the hills of the Southern Alps. So, faced with failure, chairman Cavaliere Ugo Stella decided it was time to start fresh with a new name, new company and of course a new attitude. The result? Societa Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili. Otherwise known as Alfa for short.

Picking a favourite Alfa Romeo is a bit like choosing your favourite child. You absolutely shouldn’t, and nine times out of ten you’ll default to the most reasonable answer of loving them all equally. But if we’re really being pushed, the Tipo 33/2 from 1967 still remains one of the best-looking race cars of all time. Even by today’s standards it’s achingly good. What must have people thought back in the 60s?

One thing’s for sure, spend enough time in the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo and you’re guaranteed to change your mind on multiple occasions. This is a place much more than simply home to a few old Alfas; it’s brilliantly laid out in chronological order, allowing you to fully appreciate the breadth of Alfa Romeo over the years. Whether you’re in it for the history or just to kill some time, it’s an absolute must.

The Disco Volante Lives Again

Additional info: On Sundays, at 15 hs and by previously booking, you can access a guided tour through the Deposito , the upstairs warehouse where all one-off prototypes and icon cars are stored. Recommended.

Lake Maggiore ,

With its 212.5 square kilometres, lies on the border between Italy and Switzerland. Its west bank is part of the Italian region of Piemont, the eastern shore lies in the Lombardy region and the north part in the Swiss canton of Ticino.

The second largest lake in Italy, at its deepest point 372 m, extends from the Southern Alps to the edge of the Po valley. The shore of Lake Maggiore is lined with a number of well-known locations – Stresa, Verbania, Ascona and Locarno, to name a few. Dream destinations are also the Borromean Islands in the Gulf of Stresa and the Brissago islands southwest of Ascona.

Emilia Romagna

As one of the leading economic centers in Northern Italy, Parma focuses primarily on food production. World-famous examples of Parma's cuisine include the Parmesan cheese,  Parmigiano Reggiano,  the Parma ham,  Prosciutto di Parma  and last but not least the company  Barilla  , a leading, world-famous company Italian pasta maker. Founded as a Roman colony, the city's history began as early as 184 BC. After frequent changes of power and feuds between different institutions and families, the Duchy of Ducato di Parma, founded in the middle of the 16th century, brought stability to Parma. Today the city, which is located in the southwestern Po Valley, is part of the Emilia-Romagna region. Parma's sights include the neoclassical Teatro Regio and the octagonal baptistery, a Christian baptismal font.

The northern Italian university and industrial city of Modena is the seat of numerous ceramic, cement, leather and food companies as well as one of the centers of Italian engine and vehicle construction technology. Luxury brands such as  Maserati, Ferrari  and  Lamborghini  are located in and around Modena, with museums and test tracks on their company premises. Driving pleasure is breathtaking in Modena! In addition to the history of the automobile, the Modenese are especially proud of the Piazza Grande with its Romanesque cathedral San Geminiano and the 88 m high campanile (Torre Ghirlandia). The latter is also considered the city's landmark. The architectural ensemble has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Also worth mentioning is the Lambrusco  ,  which is known worldwide. The ruby red, slightly foaming wine (frizzante) is pressed in Modena and exported from there all over the world.

Tuscany is one of the most charming regions in Italy. It impresses with its unique, multi-faceted landscape. Vineyards mix with olive groves and alternate with the very original landscape. Again and again, cypress avenues with slender trees protruding into the blue sky determine the landscape. The "strada bianca" called unpaved access roads to farms and wineries, hotels and restaurants are characteristic of Tuscany. Many of the side streets that repeatedly lead through sleepy villages are hardly used. A backdrop that the Italian film of the 1950s couldn't do better. Southern Tuscany is also something for culture lovers: cities like Siena and San Gimignano, fortresses such as the citadel of Dante Alighieri already mentioned in his "Divine Comedy". Monteriggioni, to name but a few. Believe us, there are few better places to live in a historic city. Alfa Romeo classics on Tuscan Dream Roads to glide along. Enjoy the wind in your hair and the sun in your heart!

It has also attracted culture lovers with cities like Siena and San Gimignano , as well as sights such as the Monteriggioni Fortress has a lot to offer. Already in the weeks before the world-famous horse race, the “Palio” in Siena , you may see the teams rehearsing and preparing for the big race. They parade through the city in their historical costumes and practise on their drums for the perfect entry into Piazza Il Campo.

With its impressive medieval skyline San Gimignano ranks high on Tuscany's must-see list. The picturesque town, located at 324m above sea level, is characterized by the economic boom in the Middle Ages, which made the remarkable architecture and art development possible. It is therefore no coincidence that the historic city center is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The vineyards bordering the city walls round off the perfect Tuscan flair and give an idea of the flourishing viticulture.

Take a look inside the incredible Alfa Romeo museum

TG gets a guided tour to discover the Italian brand’s historic collection

Alfa Romeo Museum

Milan. Home to the Duomo Cathedral, Le Scala opera house, Sforza Castle, and arguably one of the greatest automotive museums in the world: Museo Storico Alfa Romeo.

First opened back in 1976 and then renovated in 2014-2015, it houses some of the most famous Alfa Romeos from time gone by across six floors, ranging from the Italian brand’s very first automobile to famous coachbuilt cars and historic Mille Miglia winners.

So when we were invited on a guided tour with Lorenzo Ardizio, Alfa Romeo aficionado and museum boss, we weren’t going to turn the opportunity down. Here’s what we found…

24 HP

Where else to start than with the car that started Alfa? The Italian brand’s story officially begins on 24 June 1910 when A.L.F.A was founded (it wouldn’t become Alfa Romeo until 1919), with a car ready in waiting. No procrastinating here.

That car was the 24 HP, with development having started the previous year. Its name came from its taxable horsepower rating, with its 4.1-litre four-cylinder engine producing just over 40bhp and capable of a top speed of 100km/h (62mph). It would go on to spawn four series, A, B, C and D, before it was replaced by the 20-30 HP in 1914.

Giulietta

Alfa’s story may have started with the 24HP, but the Giulietta is arguably the car that made Alfa. First introduced in coupe form at the 1954 Turin Motor Show and designed by Franco Scaglione at Bertone, a year later it was joined by the four-door saloon pictured here.

Attractive looks and a practical, roomy interior were complemented by a 1.3-litre four-cylinder 53bhp engine, and over its decade-long production run it would go on to transform the Italian brand into a mainstream manufacturer. It was so popular, in fact, that it earned the nickname “Italy’s sweetheart”, with over 177,000 sold. Bless.

Montreal

In 1967, Alfa Romeo was asked to build a car for the upcoming Universal Exposition in Montreal, Canada. With the show just nine months away, the brand decided on a 2+2 coupe that used the 1.6-litre engine of the Alfa Romeo Giulia TI and the short wheelbase chassis of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT. A hybrid, in other words.

Next stop was the bodywork, which ended up in the hands of a 29-year-old Marcello Gandini at Bertone. Little surprise it was a hit, attracting so much interest that a production version as seen here followed, only with the V8 engine from the 33 Stradale. Obviously.

8C Competizione

8C Competizione

Once described by Clarkson as “the best-looking car ever made”, the 8C Competizione was first revealed as a concept at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. It proved such a hit that in 2006 Alfa announced it was to sell 500 models for real, and within weeks the brand had received 1,400 orders, with Joe Public seemingly agreeing with Jezza.

It boasted a 4.7-litre V8 engine, carbon-fibre body and rear-wheel drive, with 8C referencing the eight-cylinder cars developed by engineer Vittorio Jano in the 1930s, and Competizione the 6C 2500 that Juan Manuel Fangio drove in the 1950 Mille Miglia. Nice touch.

40/60HP Aerodinamica

40/60HP Aerodinamica

Turns out, Alfa Romeo builds spacecraft too. At least, that’s what this 40/60HP Aerodinamica looks like at first glance. Commissioned by a Milanese count and designed by Italian coachbuilders Castagna back in 1914, it’s easily the, er, oddest car in the museum.

Looks highly impractical too, we must say – check out how far back the steering wheel and driver’s seat are. But we jest; it was based on the 40/60HP’s chassis complete with 6.1-litre engine, with its slippery teardrop shape (hence the name) and aluminium body resulting in a heady top speed of 86mph. It remained a prototype only, to absolutely nobody’s surprise.

Carabo

What’s a Lamborghini Countach doing in an Alfa Romeo Museum? This, in fact, is the Alfa Romeo Carabo, and its name comes – obviously – from the Carabidae beetle, as illustrated by the luminescent green and orange paintjob. Whatever floats your boat, etc.

Revealed at the 1968 Paris Motor Show, you won’t be surprised to hear that its wedgy design – complete with scissor doors – comes from Marcello Gandini. Under the beetle bodywork lies the chassis of the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale, complete with mid-mounted 2.0-litre V8 engine, but only a single concept was ever made. A crying shame.

8C 2900 B Lungo

8C 2900 B Lungo

Alfa Romeos don’t come much more desirable than the 8C 2900 B, designed by Italian coachbuilders Touring Superleggera – heck, two of them feature on the top 20 most expensive cars ever sold at auction list , costing nearly $20million a pop.

Sporting Alfa’s 2.9-litre eight-cylinder supercharged engine – the clue’s in the name – the 8C 2900 was introduced in 1935 and saw action in the 1936 and 1937 Mille Miglia. The 2900 B, as pictured here, entered the fold in 1937 with improved comfort and reliability, plus Corto (short) or Lungo (long) wheelbases. If only we had deeper pockets…

GP Tipo 159 “Alfetta”

GP Tipo 159 “Alfetta”

Alfa has a rich and illustrious history when it comes to motor racing, with the 158/159 “Alfetta” (Little Alfa in Italian) enjoying notable success in Formula One. With the 158 having dominated the inaugural World Championship in 1950, the latter, which can be seen in both skeleton and complete form at the museum, picked up the baton for 1951.

With Juan Manuel Fangio at the wheel it would go on to win again that year. Alfa announced its withdrawal at the season close to focus its efforts on mass production cars, making the GP 159 "Alfetta" the last Alfa Romeo to win an F1 World Championship.

Tipo 33 TT 12

Tipo 33 TT 12

Alfa wasn’t quite done with motorsport completely, though, and enjoyed considerable success in partnership with racing outfit Autodelta during the mid-Seventies thanks to this, the Tipo 33 TT 12, complete with a 3.0-litre 12-cylinder engine with 500bhp. Wowsers.

With its name derived from its tubular chassis (" Telaio Tubolare " in Italian) and, er, 12 cylinders, in 1974 victory at the 1,000km of Monza was secured. A year later it took the World Championship for Makes title, with the TT 12 winning seven of the eight races it competed in. To top it off, the TT 12 then triumphed in the Targa Florio the following year. Not bad.

Brabham BT45B

Brabham BT45B

The Italian manufacturer returned to Formula One in 1976, when it agreed to supply its 3.0-litre 12-cylinder engine from the TT 12 to Brabham for use in the Gordon Murray-designed BT45, complete with Martini livery.

BT45 B , as pictured here, entered the fold a year later, initially with Brazilian driver Carlos Pace behind the wheel. Sadly, tragedy was to follow, with Carlos dying in a plane crash three races into the season. Hans-Joachim Stuck picked up the reins, but look closely and in the right-hand corner of the rear spoiler you’ll spot a small Brazilian flag, in tribute to Pace.

Alfa Romeo Owners Club – Washington, D.C.. MD and Virginia Chapter

Alfa Romeo Owners Club (AROC) Capital Chapter ~ Driving D.C., Maryland, & Northern Virginia Alfa Romeos since 1959.

alfa romeo tour

The Capital Chapter is one of the oldest and remains one of the largest among the Alfa Romeo Owners Club founded in 1959, barely one year after our national Club began. Back then Alfas were rare — hard to find, difficult to maintain, challenging to understand — and the Club gave enthusiasts (“Alfisti”) a place to learn, how to keep them happy, to exchange knowledge and parts, and to share their passion. There are more of these cars now, as 21st-century Alfas have joined the vintage ones. Joining the Capital Alfa Romeo Club is a great way to learn more about these iconic Italian cars, participate in social events, get tech help, and make lifelong friendships along the way…and drive!

If you are an Alfa owner, or someone interested in this century-old Italian automotive brand, we’d love to get to know you and share the thrills of the open road, the show field, and the track!

The Alfa Romeo Owners Club (AROC) is a national organization. You can join the Club at www.aroc-usa.org . If you live in our region (Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia), select the Maryland MD (Chapter 04) Capital Chapter AROC membership, to sign on to our Chapter at no additional cost. Joining AROC with the Capital Chapter Standard membership is $68.00 annually.

We look forward to keeping you updated on our club-driving events, monthly dinners, annual BBQ picnic, spring fling, the annual AROC National Convention, and unique opportunities offered by our sponsors and regional Alfa Romeo studios. With close to 200 convivial chapter members, we hope you’ll join the DMV chapter and fellow Alfisti on the next club excursion!
