As WA’s first inland European settlement, the town of York  offers a unique insight into WA’s settler history through its heritage precinct and well-preserved colonial architecture.

Head to the top of Mount Brown Lookout for sweeping views of the countryside, which is a carpeted in bright yellow canola fields around August and September, while in the York Bushland Garden you can see local wildflowers blooming in season. In town, Penny Farthing Sweets is an old-fashioned sweet shop also beloved for its quirky memorabilia. Enjoy lunch at a café, restaurant or one of the historic pubs, or pack a picnic and head to the banks of the Avon River, then stroll down to the York wire suspension bridge, the first of its kind built in Western Australia, constructed in 1888.

One of York’s most well-known attractions is the York Motor Museum. It houses a massive collection of classic cars, Aussie race cars, motorcycles and vintage racing bikes alongside plenty of nostalgic motoring memorabilia and posters. One of its most notable exhibits is the ‘Never Never Tours’ Valiant ute that was used in the film “Crocodile Dundee”. It’s even signed by the film’s star, Paul Hogan.

2. Shoalwater Islands

The Shoalwater Islands Marine Park off the coast of Rockingham  is dotted with a series of limestone islands, the largest two being Penguin and Seal Island. The park’s waters are home to Australian sea lions and around 200 local bottlenose dolphins, with tours that can take you out to swim and snorkel with them.

Just a short ferry ride offshore, Penguin Island is home to the largest colony of little penguins in Western Australia. On the island take the 1.5km Penguin Island Nature Walk to discover some of its beaches and hidden caves.

The reefs around the islands are abundant with sea stars, molluscs and plenty of fish; an idyllic environment for snorkelling and diving. You can also explore the Saxon Ranger Dive Wreck in Warnbro Sound. If you’re planning on diving here remember to get a permit first from the Rockingham Visitor Centre.

• When to visit:  All year round, but ferry tours of Shoalwater Bay operate from mid-September to early June.

Once the state’s most prominent coal mining town, the picturesque shire of Collie  is today filled with crystal-blue lakes, riverside camping spots and plenty of walking and mountain biking trails through lush forest.

The Collie Mural Trail, which features the record-breaking Wellington Dam mega mural, is one of the town’s most popular attractions. Comprised of more than 40 murals splashed across shops and other buildings around the town, each mural captures one of three themes: the history of Collie, the natural environment of the South West  region, and local Aboriginal culture. The Collie River, Glen Mervyn and Minninup Pool are must-visits if you’re eager to explore local trails and experience the town’s natural beauty. Two crystal-blue lakes, Stockton Lake and Black Diamond Lake, are popular spots for camping, picnicking and water sports.

The Bibbulmun Track and Munda Biddi Trail both pass through Collie, offering world-class mountain biking and bushwalking. The trails are especially picturesque when the town’s wildflowers bloom in spring.

• Distance from Perth:  200km, just over 2hr’s drive.
• When to visit:  Year-round, or springtime to view wildflowers.

4. Kalamunda and Walliston

Kalamunda and Walliston both boast excellent bushwalking trails, orchards, wineries and national parks.

In Kalamunda, the Bibbulmun Track, Mundy Regional Park and Rocky Pool Walk offer prime trails with epic views at bushland lookouts. The weekly Kalamunda Farmers Market each Sunday is a bustling event, with plenty of seasonal fruit and veg, baked goods and flowers on offer. The Zig Zag Drive that winds through the nearby Gooseberry Hill is a fantastic spot to watch the sun setting over the CBD.

One of Walliston’s most popular attractions is the S&R Orchard. The orchard hosts an annual blossom festival in September, and summer fruit-picking sessions from December to March each year. It’s a great place for a family day out, with live entertainment, tractor rides and food vans to enjoy.

• When to visit:  Winter for mountain biking in Kalamunda, or summer for S&R Orchard’s fruit-picking season.

The ‘sea to scarp’ town of Waroona is a popular spot to visit thanks to its picturesque lakes, dams and weirs. Not only great for water-skiing, swimming and paddling, the banks of Waroona’s waterways are perfect for setting up camp and staying the night. There are camping facilities at the Lake Navarino Holiday Park, Waroona Dam or Lane Poole Reserve.

The ancient thrombolites at Lake Clifton in the Yalgorup National Park are also worth a visit. Just west of Waroona, this collection of rock-like living fossils make up the largest thrombolite reef in the Southern Hemisphere, and mark one of few places in Western Australia where you can see living thrombolites.

Other popular activities include horse-riding along the Darling Range with Langford Hill Riding Farm, birdwatching at Drakesbrook Weir and fishing and four-wheel driving along Preston Beach.

Best known for its sprawling national park that features a koala viewing boardwalk, walking trails that weave through cave systems and a population of western grey kangaroos, the town of Yanchep  is an easy day trip destination with plenty to see and do.

Hop on a guided tour to explore the fascinating Crystal Cave, snorkel at the Yanchep Lagoon reef, take a walk trail that passes the remains of a ‘Ghost House’ and pick strawberries at a nearby farm in Carabooda (open weekends in spring and summer). If you’re eager to spend the night, pitch a tent on Henry White Oval within the national park.

• Distance from Perth:  55km, a 40min drive. 
• When to visit:  Summer for pleasant swimming weather, or spring to pick fresh strawberries.

7. Gidgegannup

Gidgegannup is a scenic area within the Perth Hills nature reserves, farming properties and fields of wildflowers in springtime. Located next to the Avon Valley, it’s a great place to hike alongside some impressive sights, such as Bells Rapids and Noble Falls.

Founded by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, the Paruna Wildlife Sanctuary offers several walk trails through jarrah, wandoo and powderbark forest to view some local endangered animal species. Join a two-hour guided walk at dusk to admire woylies, tammar wallabies, red-tailed black cockatoos and quendas in their natural habitat. The sanctuary is open from May to October each year, and bookings are essential.

If you’ve ever wanted to try horse-riding, the Zia Park Equestrian Centre is great for beginners and experts alike. The centre offers a cross country course, private riding trails through the surrounding bushland, and several large paddocks for training.

• Distance from Perth:  42km, approx. a 40min drive.
• When to visit:  August to November for wildflower season, or May to October to explore the Paruna Wildlife Sanctuary.

8. Lancelin

Dubbed one of Australia’s best sandboarding destinations, the township of Lancelin is filled with beaches, inland walk trails and of course, crisp white sand dunes. The entire dune system stretches for 2km, and in sections, offers sandboarding down 450-degree-angle dunes. Entry is free but you’ll need to reserve your board before arriving.

Lancelin’s Back Beach is a great place to unwind after a day on the dunes. Thanks to a sandbar 20m from shore, the beach generally has small waves ideal for kids (or adults) learning to surf. It’s also a popular spot for kitesurfing, windsurfing or stand-up paddle boarding. When the sun starts to set, the dog-friendly garden at the Endeavour Tavern offers sweeping ocean views and hearty meals. As a side-trip, if you’ve never seen the Pinnacles in real life, head another 75km (or 45min) north up Indian Ocean Drive to Nambung National Park, see what all the fuss is about and grab some snaps of this very otherworldly landscape.

• When to visit:  Summer, or other dry months to make the most of the dunes.

9. Dwellingup

Set amongst picturesque jarrah and marri forests, the town of Dwellingup  is filled with hiking, mountain biking and river trails perfect for those looking to get a little closer to nature.

Dwellingup’s trails vary in difficulty. The 8km Marrinup Loop Mountain Bike Trail (and its 4km-long shortcut option) is popular for beginners and kids, and keen bushwalkers will enjoy the 18km King Jarrah Walk Trail, which traces the Murray River and weaves through lush jarrah forest.

Other popular attractions include the Captain Fawcett 4WD Trail, the Hotham Valley Tourist Railway, which offers steam train rides through the forest to the towns of Etmilyn and Pinjarra, and the Forest Discovery Centre which showcases handcrafted wooden artworks and offers cultural immersion tours with a local Binjarreb elder.

If you’re planning to spend the night, there are more than 150 camp sites within the massive Lane Poole Reserve. Popular spots include Baden Powell, Stringers, Nanga Mill and Tony’s Bend – all must be pre-booked online.

• Distance from Perth:  108km, 1hr 15min drive.
• When to visit:  Winter for the best conditions to canoe down the Murray River, springtime to view wildflowers on local trails, or May to October to ride the Hotham Valley Railway.

10. Guilderton and Moore River

The town of Guilderton is situated on the last remaining river estuary on the Swan Coastal Plain, the Moore River . There’s plenty to do around Guilderton, including swimming, sandboarding and surfing.

One of the best ways to explore Moore River is by paddling. There are a few options for canoe or kayak hire in Guilderton, and the river can be paddled upstream for about 12km, until Boobabbie Bridge. There are more than 100 species of birdlife on the Moore River waterway, so be sure to keep an eye out.

For keen fishers, Guilderton Beach is a great place to cast a line. Tailor, flathead, herring, mulloway and whiting can all be caught from the shore. There’s also a fishing boardwalk at Stephens Crescent.

• When to visit:  Summer for pleasant swimming, paddling and fishing weather.

11. Serpentine and Jarrahdale

Wineries, waterfalls and forest trails – if you don’t have time to drive to WA’s Southern Forests region, take a 60min drive south-east of Perth for a day in the Serpentine/Jarrahdale region.

Pack a picnic and spend a lazy day at Serpentine Falls in Serpentine National Park. If you have the time and energy, the walk trails through the park will reward you with some stunning scenery and views, including from the granite outcrop at Baldwins Bluff Trail.

Not far away, the small town of Jarrahdale has a rich history and even has a small museum in the old post office.

To feel like you really are ‘down south’, head to Millbrook Winery in Jarrahdale. Set on a chestnut farm with 20 stunning acres of vineyards and an award-winning restaurant, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported somewhere else entirely.

If you’re a mountain bike enthusiast, bring your bike out for a day on the MTB trails at Langford Park . There’s a large network of trails here suited to all skill levels. The park also has a picnic area with tables and barbeques.

12. Mandurah

Once a popular seaside retreat for Perth locals, Mandurah tends to fall off the radar a bit these days as a daytrip option from Perth. But it’s taken a national award to remind us all just how much Mandurah has to offer.

In September 2023, Mandurah was named Australia’s Top Tourism Town as part of the Australian Tourism Industry Council’s ‘Top Tourism Town’ Awards. When you take a good look around, it’s not hard to see why.

Waterfront dining options range from fine dining to casual, with lots of options for fresh seafood.

With an estuary twice the size of Sydney Harbour, you could spend a lot of time just exploring Mandurah from the water.

And there are so many interesting ways to do just that. You can take a dolphin tour to meet the estuary’s resident dolphins, bring a crab scoop and find your own lunch in one of Mandurah’s famous crabbing spots. You can also dine out right on the water in one of the barbeque boats available for hire.

Mandurah has some excellent bike trails and if you don’t feel like bringing one, you can hire one once you’re there, with electric bikes also available for hire.

13. Swan Valley

An easy 35min trip from Perth, the Swan Valley has some of WA’s oldest grape vines and wrapped around them is an ever-growing array of restaurants, cafes, breweries, and gourmet food sellers offering everything from cheese and chocolate to olive oils.

But food and wine is only part of the story. In addition to the world-class wineries the region is famous for, the Swan Valley has so much to offer families too. Have a swing at the18-hole Supa golf course, or give mini golf a shot.

There are three different animal attractions, including Caversham Wildlife Park , the West Australian Reptile Park and the Swan Valley Cuddly Animal Farm .

For something a little different, Swan Valley Station incorporates a boutique nursery, coffee shop and picnic grounds where you can spread a rug or relax on the lawn in a beanbag. There’s also a lake stocked with silver perch, marron and yabbies where you can actually fish for the perch and take home your catch.

At the Maalinup Aboriginal Gallery , in addition to browsing local Aboriginal artworks and giftware, you can also sample bushtucker at one of the bushtucker talks and tastings, and buy produce made from bushtucker, including jams and relishes.

On the banks of the sparkling Swan River in Western Australia, Perth is one of the world's most isolated capital cities, but right on its doorstep, you'll find a dazzling array of natural wonders. Hauntingly beautiful deserts, gleaming beaches, wildlife-rich islands, and the agricultural bounty of the Swan Valley and Margaret River make rewarding places to visit outside Perth.

Distances between attractions can be vast, but the scenery is worth it. Striking rock formations rise from golden-sand deserts, and wildflowers erupt from the scorched earth in a breathtaking blaze of color from September through November.

Rottnest Island is one of the best short trips from Perth. This popular weekend getaway, comprises a slow-paced, car-free splotch of sand with an appealing blend of sun-soaked beaches, historical attractions, and wildlife.

In 1696, the Dutch navigator Willem de Vlamingh landed on the island's dazzling shores and called it paradise. But he mistook the cute, wallaby-like quokkas for rats and named the island Rotte Nest ("rats' nest"). Today, these sweet marsupials are one of Rottnest Island's top attractions, along with its beautiful reef-fringed bays and beaches lapped by turquoise water.

Besides swimming, other popular things to do on Rottnest Island include nature walks, exploring the Parker Point Marine Snorkel Trail, fishing , Segway tours, and admiring the sea views from Vlamingh Lookout and Wadjemup Lighthouse.

Fine buildings with richly decorated façades, such as the Italian-style Town Hall , bear witness to the town's late 19th-century wealth, when it was a trading hub and a gateway for gold miners traveling to inland towns. Yanchep National Park promises a fun, family-friendly day out near Perth. Walking trails, wildflowers, and plenty of wildlife are the top attractions at this wilderness area, about 50 kilometers north of Perth .

Scenic nature trails fan out through the coastal plain and circle the large lake. Choose from nine different trails, ranging from 500 meters to 55 kilometers, and look for wildlife along the way – kangaroos are common throughout the park, and koalas cling to the trees over a short boardwalk trail.

Birding is also excellent. The park's woodlands and wetlands are home to many species of birds, including black cockatoos, rainbow lorikeets, and fairy wrens. Nearby, limestone caves shelter an impressive display of stalactites and stalagmites.

To learn about the park's Noongar Aboriginal heritage, sign up for a guided cultural tour. Yanchep National Park is also the perfect setting for a picnic after a relaxing day soaking up all the natural sights. Free barbecues look out over the picturesque lake.

The Swan Valley is a haven for foodies. The journey to this picturesque pastoral region, about 14 kilometers from Perth's CBD , is as fun as the destination. From Perth, you can hop aboard a ferry and enjoy a relaxing cruise up the Swan River to the fertile farming country of Australia's oldest grape-growing region. You can also drive here in about 25 minutes.

As you explore the region, be sure to sample some of the fresh local produce and artisan foods. Grapes, asparagus, melons, strawberries, nuts, honey, citrus fruits, nougat, chocolate, and cheese are some of the local treats. The region is also home to several excellent art galleries and antique furniture stores.

Are you looking for day trips from Perth in winter? Cozying up in a Swan Valley restaurant is an appealing option on a cold, rainy day. Although three hours is a long drive for a day trip, the Margaret River is one of Perth's best loved city escapes. Sparkling beaches, fantastic surf breaks, scenic hiking trails, and superb restaurants and galleries are among the many attractions here.

A great way to soak up the scenery is by hiking the seaside walking trail to the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse , where the Southern and Indian Oceans meet. Other Margaret River attractions include dense karri forests and limestone caves, such as Mammoth Cave , Lake Cave , and Jewel Cave , with impressive stalactites and ancient fossils.

In Nambung National Park, about three hours' drive north of Perth , the Pinnacles Desert is a photographer's dream. Golden sands, wind-sculpted red spires, and deep blue skies make a striking canvas for capturing images, and you can explore this otherworldly landscape on walking trails or a scenic drive.

Emus and kangaroos are among the wildlife inhabiting the park, and from August to October, colorful wildflowers carpet the parched earth. It's worth a visit to the Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre while you're here to learn about the natural history and ecology of these starkly beautiful landscapes.

The park is also rimmed by ravishing stretches of white-sand beach, where you can swim, snorkel, and surf.

After exploring the desert, stop by the nearby fishing town of Cervantes, about 23 kilometers north of the pinnacles, for a delicious lunch. The beaches here are also beautiful, with many water sports on offer, including SCUBA diving, swimming, surfing, fishing, and sailing. Just south of Cervantes, Thetis Lake is home to a colony of rare marine stromatolites or living fossils.

About 26 kilometers north of Cervantes is the town of Jurien Bay with more pristine beaches, excellent diving opportunities, and wildlife-rich national parks. Along the coast here you can spot sea lions, as well as migrating whales from June through October.

To pack all the highlights of the region into one day, the Pinnacles Desert 4WD Day Trip from Perth is a great option. This 11.5-hour tour also includes an exhilarating desert sandboarding adventure and a visit to Caversham Wildlife Park, where you can get up close to koalas and kangaroos.

Close-up wildlife encounters are the big draw at beautiful Shoalwater Bay in Rockingham, about 50 kilometers south of Perth . Australian sea lions and pods of dolphins swim in the clear waters of Shoalwater Islands Marine Park , and you can see them close-up on sightseeing cruises.

Over the course of decades, the crew of a customized dolphin-viewing boat habituated more than 200 wild bottlenose dolphins, who willingly swim and interact with visitors. The boat is fitted with a large rear platform, so you can easily don your snorkel gear and plunge into the water.

Prefer to stay dry? Opt for a wildlife cruise aboard a glass-bottom boat. The cruises circle the rocky shores of Seal, Penguin, and Bird Islands and offer the chance to see nesting ospreys and pelican rookeries.

You can also visit these wildlife-rich islands on a guided kayak tour . As you paddle across crystal-clear waters, the sea lions and bottlenose dolphins often splash around you at close range. After paddling with the pinnipeds, some tours offer the opportunity to watch little penguins feeding. Diving and snorkeling is also excellent on the surrounding reefs.

The Swim with Dolphins Day Trip from Perth is a great way to see some of the wildlife. A professional guide, snorkel equipment, and light lunch are included.

Driving east from Perth for almost four hours through the wheat belt, you will eventually reach one of Western Australia's most striking natural monuments: Wave Rock. Named for its distinctive shape, which looks like a wave frozen in motion, the 15-meter-high rock reveals the fascinating forces of Mother Nature.

From here, a 10-minute stroll on well-marked trails takes you to Hippo's Yawn , another bizarrely-shaped rock formation with more great photo opportunities. After this, you can hop back in your car for a 15-kilometer drive to The Humps , Precambrian granite domes, and Mulka's Cave, an eroded granite boulder. Bring a flashlight to see the ancient Aboriginal handprints on its surface.

Other attractions near these rugged rock formations include a wildlife park, wildflower shop, and a somewhat incongruous antique lace collection. Though this is a long journey for a day trip, venturing into the state's arid outback gives you a sense of Perth's isolation and the vast desert wilderness that lies on its doorstep.

The best way to see all the top sites in one day is on the Wave Rock and Aboriginal Cultural Tour from Perth . This full-day tour includes a visit to the old township of York in the Avon Valley, followed by stops at all the key attractions and rock formations, including Hippo's Yawn, Wave Rock, and the sacred aboriginal site of Gnamma Holes. You can learn all about the attractions from your expert guide, and the tour includes a country-style lunch, entrance fees, and hotel pickup and drop-off.

Are you a wildlife lover? Humpback whales swim the waters off Perth from mid-September to the end of November, and you can take a front-row seat to see these gentle giants as they make their way along the coast.

Hillarys Boat Harbour, on the Sunset Coast, about 20 kilometers northwest of Perth , is the departure point for popular two-hour whale watching cruises during migration season. You can also upgrade your ticket to include a visit to the Aquarium of Western Australia , one of the many family-friendly attractions at Hillarys Boat Harbour. Here, you can walk through a glass underwater tunnel and see more than 200 species of marine creatures, including dolphins, sharks, and manta rays.

After your cruise and aquarium visit, spend some time exploring the restaurants, shops, and other tourist attractions of this large marina. Hillarys Boat Harbour is also a lovely spot for a stroll and a picnic. Bask on the calm beaches, and wander along the walking paths.

Hillarys Harbour is also one of the best day trips from Perth with dogs in tow. Let your furry friends run wild on the dog beach here year-round.

Wondering where to go in Perth for entertainment and dining? Perth City is alive with an annual program of music, theatre, dance and visual art. It is particularly rich during the Perth International Arts Festival which is held every February and March. During this time the city welcomes local and international artists to participate in a riot of shows across the region.

You can also catch a movie at Luna Cinema, Palace Cinemas or Rooftop Movies (summer only).

This tranquil park to the east of Perth opened as Scotland’s first official woodland park in 1991. It includes five hills, Corsiehill, Deuchny Hill, Barn Hill, Binn Hill and Kinnoull Hill and an abundance of flora and fauna, as well as roe deer, red squirrels and excellent open viewpoints across the Perth countryside. The park also features grassy paths and waymarked nature trails through fine mixed woodland of Scots pine, larch, oak, birch and Norway spruce.

You’ll find The Black Watch Museum within the historic Balhousie Castle, a building which is said to date back to the 12th century. Perth Concert Hall is a go-to venue for major music and comedy tours, a second home for Scotland’s classical orchestras, and a place for local artists and top international acts to perform. This state-of-the-art concert hall has some of the finest acoustics in Europe and, along with its sister building, Perth Theatre, is at the heart of cultural life in Perthshire.

Scone Palace is an ancient Scottish building, which was once the crowning place of Scottish royalty. It is surrounded by beautiful gardens and peaceful woodland, perfect for a stroll or even a picnic. Inside the palace you can admire the needlework skills of Mary Queen of Scots and see the State Rooms where Queen Victoria was entertained on her way to the Highlands. There's also a great adventure playground for children in the grounds, not to mention the unique 'tartan' maze of 2,000 beech trees. The maze was planted in the shape of the heraldic Murray Star.

The River Tay is the longest river in Scotland at 119 miles and is one of the five big Scottish salmon rivers. In Perth, the river can be best enjoyed from the beautiful riverside walkway and North Inch Park. Look out for a new long-distance walking and cycling route called The River Tay Way which will travel between Perth and Kenmore through some of the finest countryside that Perthshire has to offer. The walking route follows existing paths, and the cycling route follows National Cycle Route 77.

Visit The River Tay Public Art Trail on your trip to Perth, a two-and-a-half-mile long wheelchair accessible trail beginning and ending in Perth city centre. It features thought-provoking sculptures which draw their inspiration from the river and its wildlife, the city and local history.

Looming high above the banks the River Tay just four miles from Perth, the castle is a joy to explore. See the Perth Bell Tower

The Swan Bell Tower was opened in Perth in December 2000 and has since been one of the most popular Perth attractions for visitors. It comprises a green glass spire surrounded by copper “sails”, and is home to 18 bells making this the largest change ringing instrument in the world.

The bells came from the Parish of St. Martin in the Field of London, and were given to the City of Perth as a gift to celebrate the Australian Bicentennial.

Take a Stargazing Night Hike with Perth Observatory

Are you looking for something different to do in the Perth Hills? Why not pay a visit to Western Australia’s oldest observatory – the Perth Observatory – located in the beautiful Bickley Valley? Check out the Barracks Arch

Originally the archway to the Enrolled Pensioner Guards Barracks, which were built in 1863, and contained 2 wings of 120 rooms. The Barracks were used for housing Enrolled Pensioner Guards and their families who protected the public against the convicts in the mid to late 1800s.

By the late 1880s, the Pensioner Forces were disbanded in favour of a police force, although the barracks continued to be used for various purposes. This freestanding arch is all that is left of the building after demolition commenced in the 1960s to make way for the freeway, and public protest at the time was enough to save this small remnant of the barracks from demolition to provide a reminder of what was at the site in early settler times.

Learn about the history of the Perth Mint

The Perth Mint was established in 1899 making it Australia’s oldest mint still in operation. Its original purpose was to make gold sovereigns for the British Empire, however these days the mint produces precious metal coins for collectors and coin investors, which are highly regarded worldwide.

A visit to the mint offers the chance to see the largest collection in Australia of natural gold nuggets, including the Golden Beauty nugget, as well as precious coins being pressed, and molten gold being poured to make a gold bar in the original melt house.

Pay a visit to the Old Mill

Built in 1835, the Old Mill in Perth is one of the city’s oldest historic landmarks. Quietly nestled between the freeway and the Swan River, you could easily pass by without even noticing, however once you pass through the gates, you get a strange feeling of being transported to another era when Perth was just emerging as a colony.

This historic treasure was almost lost in 1955 when the first plans for the Perth freeway went right through the mill, however the Western Australia Historical Society and Perth citizens united to save this lovely building and it is now under the protection of the National Trust.

Roam around London Court

Set amongst modern skyscrapers in the heart of Perth City is Perth’s London Court. Built in 1937, this small pedestrian “street” is located between the Hay Street Mall and St. Georges Terrace, and has a very similar feel to the Tudor style buildings of England. As you walk through London Court, you will experience a charming atmosphere of small shops and cafes along the way.

London Court also has many fine details which you need to look for or else you may miss them, including statues of Sir Walter Raleigh and Dick Whittington, moldings, wind vanes and stairways which take you to the windows overlooking the court.

Pack a picnic and head up to Kings Park to watch the sunset over the city. It’s one of the most romantic spots in Perth and the location for many weddings, including ours.

5. Moonlit Outdoor Cinema 🍿

Kings Park is also the location of Moonlit Cinema, held during summer at May Drive Parkland, showing the latest releases, contemporary and classic movies.

Not technically in the City of Perth, but only a short ten-minute ferry ride from Elizabeth Quay to South Perth . Home to more than 1200 native and exotic animals, including some of Australia’s most endangered species, Perth Zoo is one of the most popular Perth attractions.

2. Perth Mint 💰

310 Hay Street

The  Perth Mint is Australia’s official bullion mint, built in the 19th century to refine gold from the Gold Rush. It’s a popular tourist attraction where you can take a  tour  and buy souvenirs, including Australian coins, gold, silver, and platinum. The mint is housed in a grand heritage building, one of Western Australia’s oldest heritage sites.

3. WA Museum Boola Bardip 🇦🇺

Perth Cultural Centre

The WA Museum closed in 2016 and re-opened in November 2020 under the new and improved name Boola Bardip , meaning “many stories” in Whadjuk Nyoongar. It’s one of the best Perth museums to visit.

Our favourite exhibition is Ngalang Koort Boodja Wirn, where you learn about Aboriginal culture, ancestral connections, law and lore, and their experiences. Don’t miss the huge blue whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling in the heritage-listed Hackett Hall.

4. Water Labyrinth 💦

Forrest Place, Murray Street Mall

Children will love running through this interactive water sculpture by Danish artist Jeppe Hein. Jets spray water into the air, creating nine “rooms” that allow you to stay dry until the water stops. You can watch from one of the cafes overlooking the Water Labyrinth while your kids cool down on a warm day.

It runs daily from 10 am to 6 pm unless there’s an event in Forrest Place. 

Remember to bring dry clothes for the kids!

5. BHP Waterpark 💧

This Elizabeth Quay water playground is an excellent space for families to enjoy an interactive water feature that uses jets and lighting. Parents and carers can relax on one of the benches or the decking.

6. Heirisson Island 🦘

You can visit Heirisson Island as part of the 10 km Bridges walk or from Riverside Drive (access is via The Causeway Bridge). The island is an important part of Nyoongar heritage, and you’ll see a statue of Whadjuk Nyoongar warrior Yagan which represents his strong leadership and resistance fighting during the early settlement of the Swan River Colony.

You may see some Western Grey Kangaroos on the island, which were brought onto the island in 1998.

7. Kings Park’s Playgrounds 🛝

Head up to Kings Park for a choice of playgrounds – Rio Tinto Nature Playground, May Drive Parkland, Poolgarla Family Area, and Saw Avenue Picnic Area. Our girls loved the nature playground and the “dinosaur” playground (aka May Drive Playground) the best when they were younger, and we spent hours there.

8. DFES Education & Heritage Centre 🚒

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) Education and Heritage Centre is housed in Perth’s first purpose-built fire station, which operated from 1901 to 1979. This museum has interactive displays, historical documents, and a fire engine to explore.

DFES’s Education and Heritage Centre is open from 10 am to 3:00 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and is free to enter.

Wolf Lane is one of the coolest, with street art, restaurants, bars, and coffee.

Howard Lane is another trendy lane with bars and street art.

For boutiques, Shafto Lane has you covered, and you can stop for some lunch and a drink at one of the eateries along the way.

McLean Lane,  behind the Pier Street Car Park, features artworks, original cobblestones, stunning feature lighting, and Hifumiya, Perth’s first Japanese udon noodle house.

3. Bridge Climb 🌉

The 370m suspension pedestrian Matagarup Bridge provides access between East Perth and Burswood. The bridge quickly became a Perth icon and lights up in different colours to support major local, state, and international events.

Matagarup, meaning a place where the river is only leg deep, allowing it to be crossed, is the name given by traditional land owners to the area around Heirisson Island. The flowing arches represent the Wagyl, a water-serpent of great importance to local Noongar culture, and a pair of swans.

Cheap Things to do in Perth City

Perth has many natural attractions, cultures, and buildings to explore that are entirely free or cheap.

1. Swan River (Derbarl Yerrigan)

In Dreamtime, the Darling Scarp represents the body of the Wagyl (rainbow serpent/snake), who created rivers, waterways, and lakes – including the Swan River.

Situated on the edge of Perth’s CBD, the riverside has dual-use paths where you can walk, ride, or skate. The 10 km ‘bridges’ walk around the river (crossing at the Narrows Bridge and the Causeway Bridge) will take about two and a half hours. Allow time to stop for photos, a coffee in South Perth, a detour to Heirisson Island, a drink at The Point, or a gelato at Elizabeth Quay .

If that sounds too much, hop on the ferry from Elizabeth Quay to South Perth and walk from there.

Alternatively, hire a bike from About Bike Hire and ride around the river. It’s an easy flat ride, suitable for children.

If you’re a water sports enthusiast, you can sail, windsurf and kayak along the river. There are a couple of places on the Swan River that hire out kayaks and Stand Up Paddleboards – Funcats Watersports in South Perth and About Bike Hire near The Point, in the Point Fraser Causeway car park.

The Swan River is a great place to see the sunset in the city and beautiful at night when lights reflect on the river in South Perth.

2. Barracks Archway

Elder Street & Malcolm St

Walk to the top of St George’s Terrace to view this iconic historic building, once part of a large military barracks designed by Richard Jewell. It was built by convict labour in 1866 to accommodate the Enrolled Pensioner Force (also known as ‘Pensioner Guards’), who guarded the convicts on the prisoner ships to Western Australia. These British soldiers had an option to continue as convict guards or remain as settlers with a 10-acre plot of land.

Most of the convict work moved from Fremantle to Perth around 1860, so accommodation was required for the Enrolled Pensioners and their families. The Pensioners’ Barracks, built in a Tudor gothic castle style, had two wings and 120 rooms.

Between 1900 and 1904, the Barracks were converted to offices for The Public Works Department, which remained there until 1966.

Unbelievably most of this beautiful building was demolished in 1966 to make way for the Mitchell Freeway, leaving just the entrance. Unfortunately, the Brand government wanted to remove the arch, as the entrance is known, so Parliament House had a clear view down St. George’s Terrace. Thankfully, the public won, and the arch remained.

Other buildings designed by Richard Roach Jewell are boys’ schools in Perth and Fremantle, Wesley Church, the oldest section of the Treasury Buildings, Perth Town Hall, Perth Goal, and Government House.

3. Government House

13 St Georges Terrace

Perth’s Government House is a heritage-listed home of the Governor of Western Australia and a place for visiting dignitaries to stay. It is the second permanent Government House – the first built in 1837 was deemed inadequate by the fifth Governor of Western Australia, Governor Arthur Edward Kennedy (1855-1862), due to  leaking roofs, termites, and porous walls.

The Foundation stone of the second building was laid on 17th March 1859, but was not completed until 1864. Designed by Lieutenant Colonel E.Y.W. Henderson in a Jacobean style, Government House has a Gothic feel and is one of the finest heritage buildings in Perth.

The beautiful 3.2 hectare garden is open to the public every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday between 12 pm and 2 pm (except for Public Holidays or otherwise advised).

4. St. Mary’s Cathedral – Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Victoria Square

Bishop of Perth Rosendo Salvado laid the foundation stone of St Mary’s Cathedral in 1863, which was blessed and opened in 1865. The architect and master mason, Joseph Ascione, designed the cathedral in the Norman Gothic style.

In 1924, Bishop Patrick Clune CSsR, the first Archbishop of Perth, started to raise funds for a new Cathedral. The foundation stone was laid in April 1926 and opened (despite being incomplete) four years later. Architect Mr. MF Cavanagh designed it in the English Perpendicular Gothic style with large stained glass windows.

It wasn’t until 2006 that the Cathedral was closed to complete the construction and reopened in December 2009.

5. St. George’s Cathedral

St George’s Cathedral is the principal cathedral of the Anglican Province of WA and the metropolitical Diocese of Perth. It was designed by Sydney architect Edmund Blacket and is a great example of Victorian Academic Gothic architecture, one of only a few cathedrals constructed of handmade bricks.

The foundation stone was laid on 2nd November 1880, but the first service wasn’t until August 1888.

In June 2001, the cathedral was listed on the Western Australia Heritage Register.

6. Street Art

If you’re looking for some amazing Perth Street Art , take a walk around the city. There’s art everywhere – it’s easy to find in the lanes and streets. There are not only works of art by Australian artists but many international ones.

A great tour is this Perth Street Art Tour by Two Feet and a Heartbeat, Perth’s number one tour company since 2007. Over the two hours, your guide will take you around Perth’s streets and laneways showing you murals, sculptures, and architecture.

7. Art Collective WA

This not-for-profit organisation is run by leading Western Australian contemporary artists. You can visit the gallery to view their artwork and buy any that catch your eye.

Open Wednesday to Friday 11 am – 4 pm and Saturday 12 pm – 4 pm or by appointment.

8. City of Perth Library

Pop into Perth’s city library to relax, read the paper or a magazine, or have a coffee in the café. Visitors can explore the ceiling artwork, outdoor terrace, and floors for young adults and children.

9. Kings Park

Kings Park is a picturesque, inner city park offering panoramic views of the Swan River, city, and Darling Range. The flower and plant displays in the botanical gardens are stunning, and the picnic areas on the landscaped lawns are beautiful. There are also extensive playgrounds for children to enjoy themselves, and it’s all free!

Kings Park is one of Perth’s most popular tourist attractions, with six million visitors annually from around Australia and overseas.

10. Jacob’s Ladder

Jacobs Ladder, just outside Kings Park, is a popular place for a workout in Perth. At most times of the day, you’ll see people running up and down the 242 stairs. It’s one of the ways to access Kings Park from the city on foot.

11. Stirling Gardens

Corner of St George’s Terrace and Barrack Street

This small historical park, next to Government House, is the oldest garden in the City of Perth. Colonial botanist James Drummond first used the area as an acclimatisation garden in the 1830s, and in 1845 it became Perth’s first botanical garden. The gardens are named after Governor James Stirling, the first Governor of Western Australia.

You will find kangaroo sculptures, a huge Moreton Bay Fig tree, and a water feature in Stirling Gardens. It’s a quiet escape from the city – I used to enjoy having lunch under the shade of the trees when I worked in Perth.

12. Supreme Court Gardens

Supreme Court Gardens, close to the Swan River and Elizabeth Quay, are over 100 years old and feature mature trees and garden beds. The area was planted in 1920 following the reclamation of the Swan River in 1903.

This park has public toilets and plenty of benches to rest while enjoying the flora.

The Supreme Court and the old Court House, the oldest building in the city, are in the gardens, which connect to Stirling Gardens.

13. John Oldham Park & David Carr Memorial Park (Narrows Interchange Park)

Mounts Bay Road

These pretty parks are linked by a passage under the Narrows Bridge, close to the city. Hidden away here, you will find beautiful waterfalls, water features, a playground, walking and cycling paths, barbecues, toilets, and exercise equipment.

14. Elizabeth Quay

Head to Elizabeth Quay for a nice walk around the inlet with restaurants and cafes, bars, playgrounds, luxury hotels, and boat tours.

15. London Court

This open-air shopping arcade sometimes has art installations and fake snow at Christmas (summertime for us!). Built by wealthy gold businessman Claude de Bernales in 1937, the Elizabethan-inspired arcade is a contrast to the modern Hay Street Mall.
