Day-wise Itinerary of the Trip.

Day 01:- Athirapally- Valparai

On Day - 1 of the trip, we will commence by picking you up from either the Cochin Airport or Chalakudy Railway Station, after which we will proceed towards Athirapally Waterfalls. These magnificent falls are known as the "Niagara Falls of India" and are a major tourist attraction. En route, we can visit Thumboormuzhy Dam, Butterfly Park, and Hanging Bridge. To get to the falls, we will need to take a short walk through the Athirapally Forest, where you can spot numerous endangered and endemic species of flora and fauna.

 Once we reach the falls, the breathtaking view of lush greenery with crystal-clear water is simply stunning. Athirapally Waterfalls is an ideal destination for trekking and nature enthusiasts as the falls flow through the Vazhachal forest toward the Arabian Sea. After exploring Athirapally, we will visit the famous Vazhachal Waterfalls.

 Next, we will embark on a 40 km Jungle Safari through the rainforests of Western Ghats and reach Malakkappara Hill Station, which boasts tea plantations. You can spend an hour here and then proceed to visit Upper Sholyar Dam before finally reaching Valparai. Valparai is a perfect place to stay amidst cool climates and tea estates. You can enjoy the greenery and serenity of this place overnight. 

Day 02:- Valparai - Aliyar Dam - Thrissur/ Cochin Airport/ Coimbatore Airport 

On Day 2 of your trip, start your morning with breakfast and then head towards Valparai. One of the must-visit attractions in Valparai is the Aliyar Dam, which is the second deepest dam in Asia and is located 27 km away from Pollachi. The dam is situated at the foothills of Valparai and offers some ideal gateways, including a park, an aquarium, and a mini Theme-Park that is maintained by Tamilnadu Fisheries Corporation. It is an excellent spot for a picnic with your friends or family. After exploring Aliyar Dam, make your way to Monkey Falls, which is situated near Aliyar Dam between Pollachi and Valparai in the Anamalai Hills. It is a magnificent waterfall that is a great place to spend some time with nature. After having lunch, drive to Loam's View Point, which is located at the 9th hairpin bend on the Pollachi-Valparai route. Pickup from Cochin Airport / Railway Station proceed to Athirapally Waterfalls ( also known as “Niagara Falls of India”), the stunning waterfalls which is like a gift from nature is one of the main tourist attractions. To reach the waterfalls we have to take a short walk through the Athirapally Forest . Many endangered and endemic species of flora and fauna are found in the forest. After reaching the waterfalls the view of having a combination of greenery with the crystal clear water is just tremendous. A perfect destination for the trekking and nature loving people. The waterfalls here flow through the Vazhachal forest toward the Arabian Sea. After lunch if time permits we can also visit the Vazhachal Waterfalls , which is also a famous tourist spot.

Day 02: Valparai

South India's best monsoon route : Valparai - Athirapally

A trip from Valparai to Athirapally can be definitely considered as one of the most beautiful rides in south India. This route passes through the beautiful rain forests of the Western Ghats. A road trip of this kind, is one of the best ways to enjoy the solitude of forest.

The trip was one that was planned in a matter of 15 minutes. Woke up at 4:00am on a Saturday morning for some reason. Tried hard to go back to sleep, but the mind was simply not switching off. As always, the next best thing was to hit the road. Got ready in 25 minutes, and was on the road by 4:45.

There is always something thing I would love to do, when on the tarmac early mornings. That is to watch the sunrise from the bet possible place in that route. Considering the ride started from Coimbatore, somewhere between Pollachi and Valparai seemed to be the best bet for that. And surely, it was a breath taking view, to see the sun crack red amidst the wind mills rotating lazily.

The view of the reservoir from Valparai hair pins, in the early morning rays, was something that makes you stare at it endlessly. I would rate that view, as one among the top in all the sceneries I have seen.

After crossing Valparai, the forest route to Athirapally, takes you back in time. The sheer loneliness of the roads in early morning time is an experience in its own. Couple that with the dense forest, having a view of trees from either sides of the road embracing each other on top of you. That shadow it casts, along with the sounds from all sorts of insects and birds hiding somewhere, makes you feel like you have travelled back decades of civilization. The roads were really narrow, but well maintained. The monsoon made sure the roads were always wet. But that black the moisture adds to the tarmac texture, made the ride even more memorable.

Travelled close to 450kms in the day, and was back to Coimbatore by 4:30pm evening. Took the Thrissur-Palakkad route for the return journey.

When I was back in my bed, tired, trying to resume that lost sleep of morning, that sounds from the forest was still playing in my ears. Felt like that was a ride I should have done a long back, and many times more.
