Review: LES MISERABLES at Kennedy Center

The production runs through April 29th.

pixeltracker

For the next two weeks, The Kennedy Center hosts one of the most classic Broadway National Tours, Les Misérables (dubbed " Les Miz "), to share the story of a man who continues to run from his past as we watch the struggles of living in 19th century France intertwine with his story. From the story's first conception by Victor Hugo in 1862, to the first musical performance on the West End, and then on Broadway, Les Miz continues to be a show that people of many ages will go out of their way to experience, and this production continued to prove why.

Les Miserables

As someone who has seen the show many times over the years, this rendition of the classic musical stuck out from the rest. With a relatively new (and young) cast, a different energy was brought to the story that was intriguing to watch. On its own, Les Miz is a beast of a show to take on. A long and difficult score, high emotional intensity, large moving set pieces, and the run time by itself is not an easy feat. With this new energy, there was a shift on stage that made those difficulties seem easy for this cast.

Les Miserables

With material that has a very serious tone throughout the majority of the show, there was a unique sense of playfulness the cast seemed to present. Everyone seemed very engaged with each other, as well as the audience. Ad libs that I had not noticed in previous runs became apparent in this production that made the story flow with authenticity and transported you even further into it. The audience shared many gasps, laughs, screams, and smiles throughout the entire performance because of how captivated they were. It was very entertaining witnessing the emotional effect this cast had placed upon the audience.

Les Miserables

Les Miz veteran, Nick Cartell, continues his reign as Jean Valjean and, as always, stuns everyone in the theater. Having seen Cartell in other runs of Les Miz, I was very excited to see his performance again. This time, he brought a deeper sense of maturity to the role that was very enjoyable to watch. You watch Jean Valjean's life unfurl with Cartell's storytelling as he shows how much he has endured as the years continue on in the story. Continuously having a stellar vocal performance, we do see Valjean age as he tires from avoiding his past, which indicates how much Cartell has been able to grow with this character and embody Jean Valjean to his fullest potential.

Les Miserables

To continue the praise for vocal performances, Les Miz newcomer, Haley Dortch, blew everyone away with her performance of "I Dreamed a Dream" as Fantine. Dortch immediately brought everyone in to see and feel Fantine's struggles, and the second she began the popular tune, everyone was hooked. Her tone was absolutely fantastic, adding a more modern feel to a song sung for many years, which added more depth and emotion to the story as well.

Les Miserables

Another amazing vocal performance was that of Christine Heesun Hwang's as Éponine. Another newcomer to the tour, Hwang stood out with her immense talent in this role. Portraying a character whose life didn't end up how she had hoped is an emotional task. Especially when this character also has to act like it doesn't get to her. Hwang took those feelings in and made Éponine her own. Eventually, letting it out in the well-known "On My Own," and executing it flawlessly.

Les Miserables

Each person in this cast displayed their talent and showed us why they were on that stage. Performances from Gregory Lee Rodriguez as Marius, Addie Morales as Cosette, Preston Truman Boyd as Javert, and Devin Archer as Enjorlas were impressively done as well. Along with those, we can't forget about our Master of the House and his wife - Matt Crowle (Thénardier) and Christina Rose Hall (Madame Thénardier). Being the comic relief in such a heavy show can be a daunting, yet exciting task. We can all use a break from the darkness and solemness once in a while, and these actors were the perfect remedy. "Master of the House" was the lively and upbeat number that we were all waiting for. The work between Crowle and Hall was so fun to watch, and you could tell they had fun doing it. Their character choices were top notch and spot on throughout the entire show. I found myself watching them, even if the attention was not supposed to be on them, because they were so entertaining and provided that sense of lightheartedness that was sprinkled throughout the performance.

Les Miserables

Of course, Les Misérables was a wonderful show to see again, and I highly recommend grabbing tickets before they sell out. You will be in for a night of amazing vocals, great music, wonderful acting, and a memorable story.

Running time: 2 hours and 45 minutes with one intermission

Les Misérables runs through April 19th, 2023 at the Kennedy Center, located at 2700 F St., NW, Washington, DC 20566 in the Opera House.

Theater Review: LES MISÉRABLES (National Tour)

Post image for Theater Review: LES MISÉRABLES (National Tour)

by Tony Frankel on August 14, 2023

DON’T MIZ IT

Unlike most of the characters in the blockbuster sung-through musical  Les Misérables , the show itself will never die. Consistently presented either on Broadway, national tours, and globally since the English-language version opened on the West End in 1985, audiences can’t get enough of Victor Hugo’s story about ex-con and do-gooder Jean Valjean and his righteous long-arm-of-the-law pursuer, Javert. With a speedy 3-hour running time, the rousing anthems, heartbreaking ballads, delicious characters right out of Dickens, and compelling storytelling—from Valjean’s paroling to the Paris Uprising of 1832—prove that modern audiences and millennials do indeed have an attention span if the material is great.

les miserables tour running time

After that awful movie adaptation, another Les Miz found itself on Broadway in 2014. The National Tour which relaunched October 7 and opened last week at the Pantages Hollywood (which then heads for Segerstrom in Costa Mesa) is a sleek new revival based on that production, the national tour of which was cut short by COVID in 2020. With dozens of roles, many of them major, and 30+ ensemble members, all of whom must sing spectacularly while negotiating hundreds of costume and wig changes, Les Miz is not an easy venture to undertake (costumes by Andreane Neofitou , additional costume designs by Christine Rowland and Paul Wills ). This production directed by James Powell and Laurence Connor captures the revolutionary spirit in spades.

les miserables tour running time

Designed by Matt Kinley (inspired by the paintings of Hugo), and projections realized by Finn Ross , Jonathon Lyle , and Fifty Nine Productions , the turntable and multi-media spectacle of Broadway have been expunged, but — especially with Kinley’s massive barricade and the amazing lighting by Paule Constable — it is no less effective.

les miserables tour running time

Tara Rubin Casting has assembled the most important thing: singers. Some acted better than others, but the vocals blew me away, especially with Mick Potter ‘s sound design, which makes the acoustically troubled theater feel intimate. I heard most every lyric.

les miserables tour running time

The astounding Nick Cartell anchors the show as Valjean: His vocal abilities positively stunned with a powerful and resonant tenor, and his rendition of “Bring Him Home” was one of the most stirring on record — a lengthy and roaring ovation followed this poignant ballad (one of the few places in the show the audience gets a break to applaud).

les miserables tour running time

Other characters were portrayed as well as those on Broadway. Randy Jeter was the apotheosis of sanctity and strength as the Bishop who bestows silver candlesticks on Valjean as a way to keep him from a life of thievery. An impassioned and persuasive Devin Archer brought life to Enjolras, the leader of the revolutionaries with no backstory whatsoever (indeed, I don’t believe the character’s name is even mentioned in the show). Chicago actors Matt Crowle ( Gentlemen’s Guide.. .) and Cristina Rose Hall ( Wonderful Town ) wisely don’t go over the top as Monsieur and Madame Thénardier, lowlifes who make Fagin from Oliver  a candidate for Sainthood.

les miserables tour running time

Christine Heesun Hwang veered from that yodeling, pop-opera sound as Thénardier’s daughter Éponine, offering a lovely, straightforward teenager who is torn between unrequited love and a life of larceny. A real find was Henry Kirk as the Artful Dodger-like boy, Gavroche; it’s always thrilling to see a child actor powerful in voice who can do without cloying behavior. And as Valjean’s adopted daughter Cosette, who falls for the student revolutionary Marius, Addie Morales presented a clarity of tone that was astonishing. Haley Dortch as the good-girl-turned-prostitute Fantine (“I Dreamed a Dream”) scrunched three-hours of drama into her twenty-minute role, but wisely replaced that grand tortured-soul performance for damaged purity.

les miserables tour running time

Preston Truman Boyd has a booming voice and tall stature as Javert, but while compelling, he lacked character complexity. The only undistinguished performance came from Gregory Lee Rodriguez as Marius, the student revolutionary who falls for Cosette — he sounds fine and looks swell, but without dramatic intent, his songs didn’t always ratchet up to an emotional impact. His love songs, however, soar. And when he meets cute with Cosette, it’s a very winning moment. (Listen, spectators will have their own favorites in regards to characters and/or the actors portraying them; that’s yet another reason why people return and return again.)

les miserables tour running time

Updating John Cameron ‘s original orchestrations, Stephen Matcalfe , Christopher Jahnke , and Stephen Brooker did wonders with a scaled-down 14-member orchestra (music supervision is by Stephen Brooker and James Moore . Credit for the vocals and band goes to Musical Director Brian Eads . With that damn terrific score brought to magnificence by Eads, it’s clear why Les Miz is, as the ad says, “Still the World’s Most Popular Musical.”

les miserables tour running time

But the stars of the show really are creators Claude-Michel Schönberg (music), Herbert Kretzmer (English language libretto based on original French lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel ), and James Fenton (additional material). And, of course, the adaptation by  Trevor Nunn  and  John Caird . These gentlemen may have truncated and in some ways bastardized Hugo’s novel, but there must have been Divine Intervention because they found the beating heart of the universal human journey: the search for love in a world of injustice.

Review: ‘les misérables’ a triumphant epic at fisher theatre.

DETROIT – Do you hear the people sing? The people of Detroit surely can with this powerful production of Les Misérables now playing at the Fisher Theatre.

Recommended Videos

The musical may be 37 years old, but the staging and effects are ultra-slick and very modern. In fact, this show out beats many contemporary musicals that have come and gone recently.

Throughout the numerous settings that the story takes place in, I was in constant awe at how grand everything was. Multi-level sets, which at one point was three levels tall, were fully utilized. Gigantic doors that fill the entire proscenium swing in and out, even turning, to reveal new locations and characters. A stunning barricade. This is just one of those shows that feels like no expense was spared.

Nick Cartell leads Les Mis as Jean Valjean, the prisoner who breaks parole that leads to a cat and mouse chase with the unrelenting inspector Javert, played by Preston Truman Boyd. Michigan-born Cartell returns as a fan favorite and it’s easy to see why. This is a man who puts everything he has on the stage. From his 15-minute-long action-packed introduction to his heartbreaking (and extended applause-inducing) rendition of “Home,” Cartell locks audiences in with his passionate pleas and fatherly affection. He sings the sung-through score practically perfectly with the prettiest falsetto, hitting high notes effortlessly. It makes you almost wish Prisoner 24601 had more opportunities to hit those notes, but let’s not forget that this is a show about revolution and tragedy.

Like yin and yang, the two leads complement each other in pure harmony. Boyd’s Javert is a fully fleshed out antagonist whose motives aren’t necessarily evil as they are unwavering. The nuances Boyd brings to Javert brings out this journey of power and control to chaos and self-destruction as he spirals. A booming baritone, Boyd is a masterclass in drama both through spoken word and song.

Newcomer Haley Dortch, a University of Michigan grad, is remarkable as the tragic Fantine, and her youth accentuates her character’s pain and tragedy, making “I Dreamed a Dream” even more gut wrenching. Christine Heesun Hwang, as Eponine, brings a lot of spunk and an adventurous attitude, with a powerful “On My Own” that literally rocks the Fisher. Matt Crowle and Christina Rose Hall steal the show as the dubious Thernardiers owning their showstoppers.

RELATED: Q&A: Michigan-born Nick Cartell is bringing ‘Les Misérables’ home

While the runtime is almost as long as Avatar: The Way of Water , it is so action-packed with some of the most beautifully written songs ever written for the theater, that time goes by swiftly. The harmonies, especially in the large chorus scenes, are pitch perfect. These are songs that audiences know and love and, from the reaction from the crowds, which at times felt like a rock concert, you can tell the cast is doing it sweet justice.

This production of Les Misérables is a triumphant epic, perfectly cast and staged. Audiences were entirely engulfed, completely immersed by what was happening on stage. That’s when you know a show is good, that a sold-out crowd at the Fisher can’t take their eyes, and attention, off the stage.

Les Misérables is playing now through January 8, 2023 at Fisher Theatre with a run time of two hours 55 minutes with a 15-minute intermission. For tickets and showtimes, visit BroadwayinDetroit.com .

The enduring magnificence of ‘Les Misérables,’ now at Kennedy Center

It's one of the world’s greatest musicals and essential to see.

Let it be acknowledged that Les Misérables is one of the world’s greatest musicals. I’ve seen it onstage in New York and London and on film, I’ve listened to the album on repeat, and every time the show is a revelation. With its stirring score, sweeping story, and peerless lyrics, Les Mis is unmissable. And happily, the production now encamped in the Opera House at Kennedy Center contains every centime of its magnificence.

Viewing this production, I marveled at how painterly the stage pictures are, and how cinematic the scene shifts, with chiaroscuro backgrounds in motion on scrims and ensembles costumed and lit like Rembrandt meets Bruegel. I thrilled to the sonorous voices and orchestra as they blended sublimely into rich choral sensations set off by sweet and soaring solos. I was touched by actors’ performances that felt found afresh in the moment. Even the extensive intimacy and fight choreography seemed dancerly.

les miserables tour running time

There are so many things to praise about this work, not least the creatives behind it, beginning with the Victor Hugo novel, the Claude-Michel Schönberg book and music, the Herbert Kretzmer lyrics (see complete credits here — the touring company directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell has no weak links). There’s no end of salient things to say about the work’s resonance and execution. But the other night, one particular theme jumped out at me: Though the story is set in 19th-century France and intersects a historical revolution in the streets of Paris — Act Two begins spectacularly at the barricades — the heart of the musical, I realized, is an inner revolution: the epic arc of Jean Valjean’s redemption.

les miserables tour running time

The Prologue establishes that Valjean is being released from 19 years of hard labor for stealing a loaf of bread. Never mind that it was an act of charity (the bread was to feed his sister’s child), Valjean reenters civilian life condemned by the law. And the disagreeable Inspector Javert, as agent of authoritarian justice, is not about to let Valjean forget it.

Then the story takes a stunning turn. Valjean, now a penniless ex-con, is caught stealing silver candle sticks from a church altar and is about to be sent back to prison. But the Bishop does a divine intervention: he assures the arresting officer that the silver was his gift to Valjean. By the grace of this Bishop (who would say it was the grace of God), Valjean is free to go. (“Rest from pain, and rest from wrong,” the Bishop sings to him.)

Thus is introduced dramatically the ancient tension between guilt and forgiveness, between punishment and mercy. And how Valjean now chooses to act knowing what’s at stake for him as a moral being is what propels much of the rest of the musical’s plot.

In time, Valjean assumes a new identity; he changes his name and becomes a factory owner and Mayor, and we see him do a series of good works. He rescues a destitute young woman named Fantine, promises to care for her daughter when she is dying (“Good m’sieur, you come from God in heaven,” Fantine sings to him). Then he saves a villager who was crushed beneath a cart (“Monsieur le Mayor, you come from God! You are a saint!” the villager sings to him).

But Valjean feels a sense of unworthiness that he can’t shake. “Men like you can never change,” Javert taunts him in a combative confrontation.

“Who am I?” is Valjean’s sung self-interrogation and is a recurring lyric, notably at a powerful point when Valjean learns that an innocent man who resembles him is going to be sent to prison for something Valjean did. The scene in which Valjean wrestles with what to do is riveting, and the conscience-stricken lyric is right up there with Hamlet’s “To be or not to be”:

Who am I? Can I condemn this man to slavery? Pretend I do not feel his agony? This innocent who bears my face, Who goes to judgement in my place… Who am I? Can I conceal myself for ever more? Pretend I’m not the man I was before? And must my name until I die Be no more than an alibi? Must I lie? How can I ever face my fellow men? How can I ever face myself again? My soul belongs to God, I know, I made that bargain long ago. He gave me hope when hope was gone! He gave me strength to journey on! Who am I?

At which point in the staging, Valjean bursts into the courtroom and declares himself:

Who am I? I’m Jean Valjean!

There are many powerful scenes in Les Mis, but for me this one stands out because it most eloquently captures what the art form of theater can uniquely tell us about how who we are is in the ethics of our acts. And Jean Valjean’s inner revolution — his “Who am I?” character arc in search of moral selfhood — is a major reason this musical is so enduring and why it’s essential to see.

Les Mis: Everything you need to know

By Carly-Ann Clements First Published 27 December 2017, Last Updated 24 August 2022

You may have heard the Les Misérables songs. All your friends and family have seen it… so have more than 70 million other people. Les Misérables is one of the biggest musicals in the world. Have you heard the people sing? Here are 10 key things you need to know about Les Misérables, London’s longest running musical at The Sondheim Theatre.

Les Misérables background

Les Misérables, affectionally known as Les Mis, is the stage adaptation of Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel of the same name. The sung-through musical was originally written in French by Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boubil and Jean-Marc Natel and staged in 1980. After a short run in Paris, Cameron Mackintosh heard the soundtrack and decided to produce an English-language version for a British audience. Working with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Mackintosh’s Misérables opened in 1985 with new lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer. The legendary show about ex-convict Jean Valjean and his rival, policeman Javert, received mixed reviews from critics but blew audiences away. The initial two month run at the Barbican Centre was a sell-out, guaranteeing a place on the West End at the Palace Theatre where it ran from 1985 to 2004. It then moved to Queen’s Theatre where it still runs today, although it the theatre was refurbished and renamed The Sondheim Theatre in 2019. This makes it the longest-running musical in the world.

Les Misérables has had three runs on Broadway – one of which earned it eight Tony Awards – and has toured the world. Les Mis is a cultural phenomenon that can’t be avoided. And for good reason. The grand score is often covered, both by artists such as Katherine Jenkins and Susan Boyle – famed for auditioning with “I Dreamed A Dream” on Britain’s Got Talent – and parodied in comedies such as Forbidden Broadway and Netflix’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. It was adapted into a film in 2012 which starred Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne and Sacha Baron Cohen. It received eight Academy Award nominations and won three. Les Misérables is a timeless musical which is still thrilling audiences night after night – it’s even won the critics over.

What is Les Misérables about?

Set in 19th century France, Les Misérables follows the life of Jean Valjean – an ex-convict who seeks redemption despite being hunted for decades by his rival and ex-guard Javert after breaking parole. In his quest for absolution, Jean Valjean agrees to take care of Cosette – the daughter of tragic factory worker Fantine – changing his life forever. The pair travel across France avoiding the wrath of Javert until they find themselves in Paris during the French revolution. Despite the social and political struggle, there is love, passion and courage to be found. But dreams can be broken and adoration unrequited. So how will it end for these poor souls?

Where is Les Misérables playing?

Les Mis is currently playing an acclaimed new production hailed as “Les Mis for the 21st Century” at The Sondheim Theatre. It transferred to The Sondheim Theatre (then The Queen’s Theatre) in 2004 after a 19-year run at the Palace Theatre .

With incredible new staging and a magnificent score, we are certain this new production will continue to take the world by storm.

What age is Les Misérables appropriate for?

Les Mis is suitable for children aged 8 and over.

How long is Les Misérables?

Les Mis is 2 hours and 50 minutes including one interval. There are performances of Les Mis at 7.30pm Monday to Saturday with matinees at 2.30pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

How do I get to The Sondheim Theatre in London?

The Sondheim Theatre is located on Shaftesbury Avenue. The nearest stations to Les Mis are Piccadilly Circus (250m) and Tottenham Court Road (650m). You can also get to The Sondheim Theatre via overground train to London Charing Cross (800m).

Where did Les Misérables originally open?

The Les Misérables musical was originally written and performed in French. It premiered in Paris in 1980 but only for three months. Three years later, Cameron Mackintosh heard a recording of the concept album and decided to make an English-language musical. With the Royal Shakespeare Company, Mackintosh created the musical we know and love and staged it at the Barbican Centre in 1985. It was a sell-out and in December 1985, Les Misérables opened at the Palace Theatre . Les Mis transferred to  The Sondheim Theatre in 2004 where it has played ever since. It is the longest-running musical not only in the West End but the world. In addition to the record-breaking run in the West End, Les Misérables had 6,680 performances on Broadway between 1987 and 2003. During the initial run, Les Mis received 12 Tony nominations of which it won eight. It’s since had two Broadway revivals, one from 2006 to 2008 and the second from 2014 to 2016.

Will I like Les Misérables?

37 years in the West End, eight Tonys, and an Academy Award-winning film adaptation… they’re doing something right. It’s been seen by over 70 million people worldwide in 45 countries and in 22 languages and shows no signs of slowing down. There’s literally something for everyone in Les Misérables. It’s an epic musical about passion, destruction, revenge, poverty and hope all set against the French revolution. It’s a relatable story about redemption and survival coupled with a goosebump-inducing score. With some of the most well-known, memorable and loved songs in musical history – including “I Dreamed A Dream”, “On My Own”, “Do You Hear The People Sing?” and “One Day More” – you’ll want to sing along to this incredible show even on your first viewing. If you can speak through your sobs, that is. Les Mis is the quintessential musical which has achieved legendary status across the world. Sounds pretty good now, doesn’t it?

Esperance production of Les Miserables musical brings new life to town's theatre scene

A young boy dressed as a French street urchin for the Les Mis production.

Caitlyn Edwards flicks through a glossy booklet, landing on a page showing the many faces who helped bring her dream to life.

It has been just over six months since a country theatre on the south coast of Western Australia played host to one of the most famous musicals on earth.

The Esperance production of Les Miserables – a mainstay of London's West End for almost four decades – is being remembered as the most ambitious and complex theatre project in the town's history.

But, under the direction of Ms Edwards, the community banded together to ensure its success.

"It gave us a huge injection of fresh faces to the theatre," she said.

Thanks to the Les Miserables production — or "Les Mis", as it is affectionately known — the Esperance theatre scene has never been healthier.

A woman holds a copy of a poster for Les Miserables.

'Stood the test of time'

Ms Edwards was introduced to Les Mis through the 2012 film adaption starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe.

She fell in love with the story, its iconic songs and diverse, "relatable" characters.

It was not long before she saw the musical and read the mammoth, 530,000-word novel by Victor Hugo, published in 1862.

She even embarked on an artistic project that involved painting a scene from the novel for every day of the month.

Set in early 19th century Paris, Les Mis follows the story of Jean Valjean — a French peasant released from prison in a time of revolution — and is a tale of injustice, love, suffering and hope.

A thick yellow book with the words Les Miserables and Victor Hugo in black, and picture of a girl with a broom.

"No matter what kind of mood you're in, there's something to relate to," Ms Edwards said.

One day while backstage at Esperance's historic Bijou Theatre — the oldest purpose-built theatre in WA — fellow thespian Derek Clarke informed her that the rights to Les Mis were available to be purchased.

Her interest was piqued, but the challenge would be the music, with the Bijou too small to accommodate an orchestra pit.

Thankfully, the Esperance Theatre Guild was able to obtain professional recordings of the Les Mis score, which were a "total game changer" for the project.

The exterior of a local theatre painted in white a pale blue, with a sign saying Bijou Theatre.

An information night held early last year suggested community interest in the production would be strong.

"I thought maybe four people would come [the the meeting], and it was really surprising to see the auditorium half full," Ms Edwards said.

"Because Les Mis has been around for so long, so many people have memories associated with it."

A community effort

A typical play held at the Bijou Theatre might involve a total cast and crew of 20-30 people.

The 2023 Les Mis production had a cast of more than 70, and a crew of about 30.

About half of the cast were under the age of 18.

Ms Edwards said one of her goals was to make room for young people to get involved.

"I wanted to have street urchins, I wanted to make sure that kids that wanted to be on stage had the chance to be on stage," she said.

A group of young people dressed in waist coats and white shirts, on stage surrounded by wood boxes.

Thanks to a grant from the Mt Burdett Foundation, an organisation investing in ideas that create a vibrant and resilient rural and regional Western Australia, the theatre was able to employ a professional fight choreographer/intimacy coach and an experienced vocal specialist from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

"It was very obvious by the time we went live that it had made such a difference to where we were at the start," Ms Edwards said.

The foundation's Esperance Community Advisory Committee chair, Megan McDowall, said the Les Mis project was an ideal funding recipient.

"We just like to support people who are passionate about the community and also have the capacity to deliver," she said.

After months of late nights and rehearsal after rehearsal, it was suddenly August and time to perform before an audience.

It soon became clear they had created something special.

"The week before we open, anyone with a pensioners card can come and watch for a gold coin donation," Ms Edwards said.

"We got a standing ovation, and that had never happened to me on stage, or in any show I've been a part of before."

Bright future for historic theatre

Barry Wroth beams with delight as he casts his eyes over the dimly-lit auditorium.

He has attended local productions for decades, and is currently president of the Esperance Theatre Guild.

The keen actor and director said Les Mis was like nothing the town had seen before.

"It was definitely the most ambitious project that any small theatre group could put on," he said.

"You'd walk down the street and the whole town was abuzz."

Photo of a man in a theatre seat

He said participation had not only soared since the production, but the locally owned theatre's finances had been given a much-needed boost.

"For the first time in history, all the tickets were sold out a week before opening," Mr Wroth said.

"It was sensational."

Next year will mark 40 years since the Les Miserables musical debuted in London.

It remains one of the city's most in-demand shows, with Australian performer Josh Piterman currently starring as Jean Valjean in a production at the Sondheim Theatre.

Actors on stage dressed singing

Ms Edwards said the story would continue to resonate with audiences worldwide for many years to come.

"It's full of universal themes," she said.

"And so it's something that has really stood the test of time."

She has already turned her attention to other creative projects based on Victor Hugo's masterpiece.

"It's a love story, but not necessarily in the romantic sense, and it's a story about hope," she said.

"And I think people really connect with that need for hope."
