Gap Year Holidays

Great, you're taking a Gap Year, lucky you! We only wish we could be doing the same. So you probably have a lot of plans and / or questions.

We know it's pretty nerve-wracking when you're starting to think about a year away so our job is to help you and make sure your experience is excellent. When you contact us a travel expert will be able to help you and will be your personal travel agent throughout.

Our team are experts in gap years because most if not all have taken gap years and many have lived overseas or years.

We can help with flights and which routes to take. Depending on where you're going and for how long we can help with visas, jobs, bank accounts, accommodation and more.

We also have hundreds of small group trips on our website. These trips range in length from just a few days up to a few months, and we have them for all over the world, so you won’t be disappointed with our options.

The vast majority of gap year travellers are solo and these trips are designed with you in mind. Over 50% of those on these trips are usually solo travellers. They're a great way to meet people.

Getting There

We can find and book the best flights on the market for you. We can also piece together stops along the way and way back if you wish.

We can book flexible tickets which allow you to change your dates of lying giving you maximum flexibility.

This can be daunting, you're really now on your adventure. To make things a little easier for some destinations  we can provide a start pack which  includes things like:

Opening your bank accounts

Job opportunities

A few nights accommodation

It's basically designed to take away some of the admin and hassle so you can enjoy your time rather than queuing at the bank for example.

Having Fun & Holidays

We have literally hundreds of adventures, tours and experiences all designed around those on gap years. You'll meet lots of other people around your age and on gap years or adventures too.

Coming Home

You might not want to come home but in case you do we can book your flights home either when you decide you want to return. If you've booked flexible tickets to travel to Australia you'll be able to move your dates for your return, either way our experts ca help get together the perfect flights for you.

We Are Here To Help

We are experts in gap years and we're going to help you to make sure you have a great time. When you make contact with us an agent will be assigned to you and they become your personal travel agent making sure you get what you want!

We understand planning your gap year can seem like a bit of a minefield at the beginning so, often it can be easier to talk to someone. Don't worry, we are real people! If you chat to us on our live chat or call us you'll speak to someone, there are no answer phones unless our office is closed for the day in which case leave a message and we'll call you back.

Around The World Adventures

A gap year is the perfect time to embark on an around the world trip, it’s rare to find that amount of time all in one go again! Who wouldn’t want to travel the world taking in lots of different countries on a once in a lifetime adventure?

Our group adventures operate in well over 100 countries around the world, so you will be spoilt for choice with where to go. Doing several group tours in your ‘Around the World’ trip ensures that you’ll have a bit of structure to your trip, have things paid for upfront so that even if you do start to run out of money you’ve already paid for your adventure, and it just makes it that much easier to make new friends. Plus, for a lot of parents out there it gives a bit of peace of mind that they know where you are and what you are doing.

We have put together plenty of ‘Around the World’ adventures so please don’t hesitate to get in touch and together we can create the perfect trip for you. Give us a call on  0208 004 8886 or send an email to [email protected] and we'll be sure to help.

Build Your Own (Gap Year Ideas)

Each customer to us is completely different. We’ll listen to exactly what you want, how you want to do it and any requirements you may have. We will then ensure that all of the trips we send over to you suit you and what you are after. Ask us any questions and we will be sure to help in all aspects of putting together an amazing once in a lifetime trip for you. We are here to make this experience as easy and stress free for you as possible, so you only need to think about the exciting bits to come!

What should I expect?

What a question! We think you should expect an adventure, a good time, to meet new people, make some amazing friends and finally to have some memories you'll keep for your life. All in all, this is your time, this is your adventure and we are here to help make it happen for you. It can be nerve wracking but embrace it and enjoy it. You'll have a guide, new friends and tons of support when on your adventure, and of course, you always have us. If you'd like to find out more about specific destinations or trips just get in touch via email on [email protected] or give us a call!

Who else has booked on?

Good question! We aren’t able to give exact details on this, but please do get in touch and we'll give as much information as we can which is typically how many people, split of gender, solo travellers and couples and where everyone is from and their approximate age.

Where should I travel to?

South East Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia etc) is generally a very popular place for a Gap Year! It’s cheap, easy to get to in terms of flights and there’s tons to do. The food is incredible, the people friendly and don’t get us started on how amazing some of the beaches are! We have such a range of trips in this region you really won’t be disappointed.

Another popular region is Australia & New Zealand, there are so many appealing things about this area. Although more expensive than South East Asia it’s truly worth it, when you’re snorkelling in the Great Barrier reef, visiting shipwrecks on Fraser Island, seeing the amazing Milford Sound or spotting Dolphins in Kaikoura, you’ll be thrilled you came.

South America is becoming more and more popular as the years go on. It’s a stark difference to that of South East Asia, with completely different scenery, culture and food, but it’s equally worth a visit. How about checking out the Salt Flats in Bolivia, Iguassu falls on the border of Brazil and Argentina, climb the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru or visit one of Pablo Escobar’s homes in Colombia. There are endless things to do in this amazing continent, it's definitely a must see!

It's my first time away on my own, help!

Of course, that’s what we are here for! Don't worry, when travellers have their first time away from home the vast majority of people are nervous. It's always good to chat through things. It can seem like there is SO much stuff to think about and get right or plan for but the good news is, really there are only a handful of key items to address:

1. Where are you going and what do you want to do?

2. What to expect

3. Safety, your guide and emergencies

5. Communications

We can help with ALL of the above and more.

Often people want to know who else is going, what age they are and basically know a bit more about the group to make sure they'll fit in.  We can give information about the general group make up so do contact us if you're curious but also, it is very, very rare that a group doesn't work for you. People who take these trips and go onto gap years are often like-minded and share similar outlooks and interests. People are usually around the same age too and most of the time are mixed gender. If in doubt give us a shout!

As a final bit of advice, the first thing to start with is what you'd like to do and where you'd like to go, everything else will flow from that. If you already know, make contact with us! We can help with the rest.

Is it safe?

YES! Well, as safe as it can be! Travelling always carriers some danger but the good news about these tours are you have a guide and people so you get safety in numbers in local knowledge. This is a huge benefit of small group travelling.

Nonetheless there are some risks like you get on any trip (pickpockets for example) and of course your own behaviour can influence your safety so be street smart! (we can help with this too).

If you are nervous about certain destinations what you can do is head on over to the government website ( HERE ) and you can check out each country's safety and security, and sign up to receive any alerts.

How do I budget for my trip?

Good question and this really depends upon the tour(s) you're taking and where they are as costs will change a lot. We would say do make sure you've got some spare cash in your account and make sure you bring your bank card. For more information on budgeting, head to our destination pages to see how to budget for each country you want to visit.

Most people have a debit or credit card, either are fine. There is one advantage to a credit card is that it can be good for emergencies and / or if you run out of cash in your current account. A lot of travellers also tend to bring more of a ‘Travel Money Card’ providing better rates and more security. These work in the way of a bank transfer from your normal bank so you can load little and often onto the card to feel safer.

What about visas?

You may need one, best to contact us or check with the FCO. Visas depend upon your nationality, where you're going and how long for so it can be a tad complicated.

If you are a British national then please check our government website, you can access that HERE . You can type in the country you are going to and check out the entry requirements. These can change frequently so we suggest checking this well in advance of your trip and then shortly before you go to see if anything has changed.

Another good thing you can do on this website is sign up to receive any alerts, this means you'll be emailed if there is an update to anything to do with that specific country.

Do I need any vaccinations?

Maybe yes. Again, this is one of those areas which we can only answer with more information. Your best bet though is to phone your GP or local NHS travel clinic and ask once you've made your booking. You may need a round of vaccinations for some destinations so we suggest contacting them well in advance of your trip.

Alternatively you can visit your local pharmacy and ask as they'll often have a very good idea of what, if anything, you need. We do recommend you find out if you need anything as some diseases can be quite nasty so it's well worth protecting against.

gap travel group

A new line of trips for adventure-loving families in search of a meaningful way to discover the world together.

A big world, brought down to size

Family edutainment.

Family trips introduce kids to the inner workings of other cultures through language, sports, crafts, and time with experts that bring what they’ve learned in school into real life.

The more the merrier

The average Family group consists of about 12 people, typically three or four families from all over the world and with kids around the same age as yours.

Small travellers, big fun

If one family member isn’t having a good time, nobody is. We give each Family tour a Recommended Age rank so parents can tell if it'll be a good fit for their kids before they go.

Together, the Robertses discovered a new theme park: "Thailand"

As working parents, Dan and Hayley are all too aware that the time they have together with their kids is at a premium. They were in the market for something special; an experience they could all enjoy that would also broaden the horizons of their sons Keir and Tigne. They were looking for an experience that all four of them would remember for the rest of their lives. They found it in a place they never suspected: on a Family trip through Thailand.

Watch the Roberts' story

“ We went to this little village in Thailand where people grow their own food. Our CEO showed us how to separate the rice from the husk so it can be turned into food. It was cool to see how the food we ate got from the ground to our plates. ”

Learn now, appreciate forever

Travelling is the perfect way to open up a child’s world to possibility and wonder. Powerful experiences lead to new interests, and exposure to different cultures, languages, and environments helps the kids of today become the responsible, well-rounded adults of tomorrow. Our Family trips deliver a seamless mix of adventure and education that’s so much fun they won’t even realize they’re learning something the whole time.

gap travel group

“ Our group had kids from Canada, Germany, and Australia in it, which was pretty cool. It was great to have kids who weren’t my brother to hang out and do stuff with. ”

Pen-pals for life

family walking along a dock

One of the advantages of group travel is the diversity of people you get to share your experience with. Family trips are a great way for children to meet and interact with other kids from around the world who are close to their own age and share common interests. It’s not uncommon for families who meet on our trips to stay close after the trip ends; some even make the experience an annual tradition.

Built just for families

gap travel group

“ We’ve got two kids of different ages and completely different interests, so finding a trip that we could all get something out of was a challenge. I thought it was wonderful that our trip had activities that we could all do together, as well as some tailored to the ages of the kids in our group. ”

Built for families

Travelling with the family is an adventure unlike any other, in all sorts of ways. Kids often have wildly different needs than adults, which is why we don’t just adapt our grown-up itineraries for smaller travellers. Little things like age-appropriate activities, hotels with amenities designed for families on the go, and CEOs that think like kids and adults alike are just a few of the things that set our Family trips apart. We believe that everyone deserves to have the time of their lives, no matter how old they are.

See it how the they saw it

The Robertses explored the wonders of the Thailand with us for just 12 days, but the memories they made will last them the rest of their lives. What will your kids remember? Start making better memories today.

Canada Gap Travel

A massive country spreading from the east coast to west coast of North America, and an exciting and easy country to travel across on your gap trip. Gap travellers are welcome in Canada and of course, apart from Quebec, it is English speaking.

A proper gap travel journey to Canada should include visits to Quebec City, Toronto, Montreal and Niagara Falls in the east, then Banff, Jasper and the Rocky Mountains, and finally Vancouver in the west.

Your gap travel itinerary could include a working holiday visa for the summer, or longer, and gap year students are welcome on the Whistler and other ski areas in the winter.

The best way to travel within Canada on a gap year journey depends non your budget and your time scale. Flying is quite cheap and as the distances are vast, a flight on your gap travels is probably best. However many gappers enjoy overland journeys, such as the train across the prairies, or a small group adventure trip, so consider including this on your gap year programme.

Gap and Palace Drop Landmark Collaboration, Chaos Ensues

A new car is a big purchase, and many drivers end up making auto loan or lease payments for years. But a new car’s value can drop significantly, especially within the first year. If your new car is totaled in an accident, a full coverage car insurance policy will only cover up to the vehicle’s current market value. So how do you pay off your auto loan if you still owe more than what your car insurance will cover?

Unfortunately, you’re still on the hook for the difference between a car’s value and the amount you owe on it — unless you have gap insurance.

What is gap insurance?

Gap insurance, or guaranteed asset protection, is an optional coverage that pays the difference between what your vehicle is worth and how much you owe on your car at the time it’s stolen or totaled. This coverage supplements a comprehensive or collision car insurance payout, which can only be as high as your car’s value.

You’re responsible for paying off your car loan if your car is totaled or stolen, even if your insurance won’t cover the full amount you still owe. This is where gap insurance can come in handy.

But to be clear: If you don’t have a car loan or a lease, you don’t need gap insurance.

What does gap insurance cover?

Gap insurance covers what’s owed on a car after a total loss, whether that’s the result of an accident or vehicle theft. Gap insurance pays out after comprehensive and collision coverage, two coverage types that are typically required when you buy or lease a new vehicle. (They pay for damage to your car after things like accidents, fire or vehicle theft.)

However, comprehensive and collision insurance pay only what a car is worth at the time of a theft or accident. So when you owe more on your car loan or lease than that, gap insurance covers that amount.

In most cases, gap insurance doesn't cover your comprehensive or collision deductible. Your deductible is the amount your insurance subtracts from a claim payout.

How does gap insurance work?

Let’s say someone stole your new car, and at the time it was worth $25,000. Unfortunately, you still owe $30,000 on the car. You have comprehensive insurance, which will pay for the value of your car at the time of theft. You’re responsible for your $500 insurance deductible , and then the insurance company pays $24,500 to your lender — but there’s still $5,500 due on your loan.

Gap insurance is designed to pay that final $5,500 so you don’t owe money on a totaled car. But without gap insurance, you’ll have to cover the balance on your loan as well as your insurance deductible.

Here is a visual of that example:

Is gap insurance worth it?

You don’t need gap insurance unless you lease a vehicle or have a loan. You also don’t need it if your loan is paid down below the value of your car.

But if you do have a lease or loan, you may want to think about whether you can afford to pay the difference between the amount you still owe and the value of your car. If you couldn’t make that payment, or don’t want to deal with that financial stress in an emergency, then you’d probably benefit from having gap coverage.

Drop gap coverage when your car loan is less than the current value of your car. Online pricing guides like Edmunds or Kelley Blue Book can give you an idea of how much your car is worth. Insurers might not drop it automatically, so you may need to remove it.

How to get gap insurance

You can generally only add gap insurance to your policy if you still owe money on the vehicle or lease. Although insurers’ guidelines vary, a company may require one or both of the following:

Your car is no more than two to three years old.

You are the original owner of the vehicle.

There are two main ways to buy gap insurance:

From your auto insurer, as part of your regular insurance policy.

Through the dealership or lender, rolled into your loan payments. With this arrangement, you’re paying interest on the cost of your gap insurance over the life of the loan, making the coverage far more expensive.

If you buy through your dealership or lender:

Check your auto loan contract to see if you’re required to have gap insurance — not all lenders require it. However, your lender will generally require you to buy comprehensive and collision coverage.

A dealer may automatically include gap insurance if you lease your car, so make sure to check your lease agreement.

If you already bought gap insurance from your dealer and want to buy it from your insurer, you may be able to remove it from your car loan contract. Make sure you have coverage during the transition if you switch providers.

NerdWallet recommends buying gap coverage through your auto insurer rather than from a dealership to avoid paying interest on it. Not all car insurance companies provide gap coverage (or an equivalent) or offer it in all states, so if you decide you want this type of insurance, you may need to switch companies .

Which insurance companies sell gap coverage?

Some of the largest insurance companies that offer stand-alone gap insurance (or an equivalent) as add-ons to car insurance policies are:

American Family.

Auto-Owners.

Liberty Mutual.

Nationwide.

How much does gap insurance cost.

Auto insurers typically charge a few dollars a month for gap insurance or around $20 a year, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Your cost depends on individual factors, like your car’s value. You’ll also need to buy comprehensive and collision coverage. To find the best company for you, compare car insurance rates with at least three insurers.

Lenders charge a flat fee of around $500 to $700 for gap insurance, according to United Policyholders, a nonprofit consumer group. But if you add the coverage to your loan, you’ll also pay interest on it. That means you could pay more than that $500 to $700 for three years of gap coverage from a dealer, compared with around $60 from your auto insurer for that same timeframe.

Prices and interest rates will vary, so always check with your dealer and car insurance company to accurately compare costs.

Alternatives to gap insurance

Gap insurance isn’t the only way to protect yourself if your car is stolen or totaled. Depending on your needs, you may want to add one of these coverage options instead of gap insurance:

New-car replacement insurance : If you’re more worried about buying a new vehicle than paying off your old one, new-car replacement coverage might be a better choice for you. While it is more expensive than gap insurance, this coverage helps pay for a new car of the same make and model, minus your deductible, to replace your vehicle with a new one.

Better-car replacement coverage: If your vehicle is declared a total loss, this type of coverage will give you money for a model that is newer and has less mileage.
