Liverpool England Port Guide

If you’re looking for a place in Northern England that is the most reminiscent of the exciting city of London, then Liverpool is your answer. Full of history and culture, Liverpool is second only to London for the highest number of museums, theaters, and art galleries in England. But Liverpool isn’t just an alternative to London. Liverpool has an energy and vibe all its own.

Liverpool has a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and was even named the European Capital of Culture in 2008. Beyond the monuments, you’ll find beloved soccer teams like Liverpool FC and Everton FC. (Don’t forget it’s football, not soccer, in England!) Clubs pay homage to one of Liverpool’s most famous exports, the Beatles.

European cruise passengers sailing to Liverpool dock right in the city center and can spend the day learning more about the city where the Beatles got their start, touring old English heritage sites, and walking along the historic waterfront.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to liverpool, albert dock.

The historic Albert Dock has been impeccably restored in recent years, transforming a formerly tired harbor basin into an exciting and gentrified area where you’ll find Victorian buildings around an arcaded walkway. High-end boutiques, restaurants, cafes, and luxury apartments inhabit the surrounding buildings.

Albert Dock is also home to a number of museums. A popular one with tourists is the Beatles Story, which has memorabilia and films about the iconic musical foursome. Those looking for more in-depth history on Liverpool’s past can visit the International Slavery Museum, which is located near the 18th century dry dock where slave ships were refurbished and repaired, or the Border Force National Museum, which focuses on the history of smuggling and contraband via Albert Dock.

The museums aren’t the only thing famously historic about Albert Dock. The dock itself was the first of its kind in Great Britain that was built using only bricks and iron. This distinction is what gave it the royal treatment in 2018, with its previous name of “Albert Dock” being changed to “Royal Albert Dock”.

Pier Head is an area of Liverpool right by the harbor famous for its stunning trio of buildings that stand proudly over the waterfront. These buildings consist of the Port of Liverpool Building, the Cunard Building, and the Royal Liver Building. Pier Head is also home to the Titanic Memorial that pays tribute to the “Heroes in the Engine Room” and the Queen Victoria monument.

St. George’s Hall

St. George’s Hall has it all for architecture buffs: gorgeous neoclassical architecture featuring Corinthian columns and statues as well as neo-Greek buildings housing libraries; music halls (you’ll find one of the world’s largest organs within the beautiful Great Hall); lovely gardens featuring statues of famous former residents of Liverpool; and the oldest building in Liverpool’s city center, a former charitable school begun in 1717 that is now called the Bluecoat Chambers and is a creative hub for the arts.

Radio City Tower Viewing Gallery

Another can’t-miss sight to see (in more ways than one) located near St. George’s Hall is the St. John’s Beacon, which looks like a spaceship atop a pole and boasts the best views of the city from its Radio City Tower Viewing Gallery. This platform is home to some of the most popular radio stations in England. Most travel to its top not for the music, but for the 360-degree panoramic views of Liverpool and beyond.

Liverpool’s Churches and Cathedrals

Three religious buildings stand out in Liverpool. The first is the Anglican Liverpool Cathedral, which is quite modern in terms of European cathedrals. It began in 1929 and was completed in 1967, showcasing a cylindrical tower in the center of the cathedral 200 feet in diameter and 330 feet high. The second church of note is the Catholic Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, which gives a historic nod to the high proportion of people living in the city that are of Irish descent going back to the 19th and 20th centuries when many immigrants from Ireland arrived to Liverpool and ended up settling in the city. The third prominent church in Liverpool is the Anglican Church of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas, which has served as a place of worship since the 13th century.

Learn More About Liverpool Shore Excursions

Top things to do in liverpool, walk in the footsteps of the beatles.

Liverpool is the childhood home of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. These four names are synonymous with one of the greatest (arguably the greatest) musical group of all time: the Beatles. While in Liverpool, you can see the childhood homes of Paul McCartney and John Lennon as well as the locations that inspired songs such as Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane.

You’ll also find museums dedicated to the Beatles here, including the Beatles Story at Albert Dock and Beatles memorabilia at the Museum of Liverpool. See their names on the Wall of Fame located on the musically important Mathew Street. The Wall of Fame lists the names of every Liverpool band or solo musician who got a number one hit on the UK charts. Matthew Street is also home to the Cavern Club, where the Beatles played over 300 times.

Merseyside Maritime Museum

If you want to learn more about the maritime history of Liverpool during your time in the city, you can’t miss a visit to the Merseyside Maritime Museum. This interesting museum has a number of exhibits that tell the past tales of the thousands of British citizens who left the country aboard the Mersey between 1830 and 1930. Other exhibits display seafaring artifacts for the area in and around Liverpool that date back to the 13th century. You’ll hear tales about the tragedy-bound ships of Titanic and Lusitania and their ties to Liverpool, map rooms and information boards about the Royal Navy in World War II, a depiction of what it was like living on a submarine during war times, and a number of model ships and vessels on display.

Walker Art Gallery

The Walker Art Gallery is an excellent place to tour for those interested in the visual arts, particularly from the 18th to 20th centuries as its display of English paintings and sculptures from this time period is considered to be the best you’ll find outside of London. Art from as far back as the 14th century is also on display, including works by famous artists such as Rembrandt and Rodin. Don’t miss seeing the painting called Sweethearts and Wives, which depicts a good-bye scene at Pier Head in Liverpool before the sailors set off to sea.

For more art, head to Mossley Hill in Liverpool, where you’ll find the 19th century Sudley House, a beautiful mansion that is an extension of Walker Art Gallery and houses an additional gallery of artwork.

Manchester City Tour

When traveling on one of our Liverpool cruises, you may want to spend your time in port visiting another nearby city: Manchester. Doing a city tour to Manchester from Liverpool is especially popular with soccer fanatics who want to see Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United, which is one of the most beloved sports teams in the world.

While in Manchester, you can also see the Lowry, an ultra-modern building home to waterside arts, Etihad Stadium, home to Manchester’s other soccer team called Manchester City FC, and visit the Science and Industry Museum, which is a fitting stop since Manchester has a strong industrial past.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Liverpool Cruise Port

For some beer and cocktail drinking with some music history thrown in while on your cruise to Liverpool, head to the Cavern Club, the music venue and bar where the Beatles got their start performing. The bar and performance venue is located in a brick-lined cellar that provides a dive bar atmosphere despite being one of the most famous bars in the world.

For a hip vibe with multiple food and drink options, head to Cains Brewery Village, a large space home to vintage shops, artist workspaces, coffee shops, and bars. The bars range from craft beer bars to BBQ style bars with an outdoor ambiance to tank bars. Cains Brewery Village is also home to Baltic Market, Liverpool’s first street food market.

Culture & History of the Liverpool Cruise Port

Liverpool is one of the oldest cities in the United Kingdom and has a history rich in maritime tradition. A large number of cultures and religions are found in the city, and many of its people are of Irish and Welsh descent. The origins of Liverpool date back to 1190. It was an important maritime and industrial city for many of the centuries that followed. In the 1970s, the city began to see a steep economic downturn that it only recently recovered from. Today, those on a cruise to Liverpool will find that it’s a thriving and exciting city to explore with lots of memorable attractions and modern amenities.

Liverpool was named Capital of Culture in 2008 for many reasons. Its famous music scene, die-hard football fans, and myriad of art museums, plus an eclectic bar and restaurant scene, make it a fitting place for those looking to experience local culture.

Liverpool Port Facilities & Location

Liverpool cruise port is located right by Pier Head and is directly adjacent to the Royal Liver Building. From the cruise terminal, it’s a short walk to some of the Liverpool’s top attractions. Though there aren’t many amenities right inside the terminal, you’ll find a plethora of restaurants and shops right outside it on Pier Head.

Transportation in Liverpool

Passengers on Liverpool cruises will find it’s easy to get around while in port. You’ll find a taxi rank right by the cruise terminal on St. Nicholas Place. If you want to catch a train to Manchester or somewhere else in England, the train station is just a 20-minute walk away (Lime Street Station). Another convenient mode of transportation when you cruise to Lisbon is the Hop-on Hop-Off bus that departs from the cruise port every 15 minutes.

Shopping Near the Liverpool Cruise Port

Liverpool ONE is a large shopping complex located right by the waterfront. It has a plethora of shops filled with high street fashion and high-end accessories. Spend some time in two of England’s popular department stores, John Lewis & Partners and Debenhams. After you shop ‘til you drop, head to one of Liverpool ONE’s many restaurants or bars for some sticky toffee pudding or a refreshing pint.

For some vintage finds or unique souvenirs from the UK, the place to head in Liverpool is Red Brick, which is heralded as Liverpool’s best independent shopping experience. Red Brick is made up of two parts: Red Brick Vintage, where you’ll find unique vintage goods, and Red Brick Hangar, which is an indoor marketplace. Red Brick is located in Cains Brewery Village.

You can also find many souvenirs and clothing shops along Royal Albert Dock during your cruise to Liverpool.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The accepted currency in Liverpool and the rest of the UK is the British pound. You’ll find ATMs all over the city dispensing cash in this currency. Visa, MasterCard, and Maestro are also accepted by most businesses in Liverpool.

For tipping, it’s customary to leave 10% to 15% for meals, though some places will already tack on a service charge that is usually 12.5%, so double check that your bill doesn’t include that. You’re not expected to tip for take-out or fast food. Tipping 10% to 15% for taxi drivers is also customary, though it’s also acceptable to simply round up your total fare depending on the total amount.

Port Liverpool cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Liverpool, England. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Liverpool is a major port anc city in England's Merseyside (metro region) with population around 0,5 million (urban ~870,000, metro ~2,3 million). The cruise port is located along River Mersey Estuary's eastern side. Other major turnaround (cruise ship departure) ports in the UK are the England's Southampton , Bristol , Dover , Harwich , Hull , Tilbury-London , Newcastle and Portsmouth , and Scotland's Leith-Edinburgh and Greenock-Glasgow .

Ferries link Liverpool with Dublin Ireland (17 crossings weekly, travel time 7 hours), Belfast Northern Ireland (14 crossings weekly, travel time 8 hours) and Douglas, Isle of Man (12 crossings weekly, travel time 2 hours 45 min). These routes are operated, respectively, by the companies P&O FERRIES , STENA LINE and Steam Packet Company (purchased in May 2018 by Manx government for GBP 124 million).

Port Liverpool

Port Liverpool (locode GBLIV) is located approx 9 mi (15 km) from Liverpool John Lennon Airport and approx 40 mi (60 km) from Manchester International Airport. The nearest to the cruise port train station (Lime Station) is a few minutes drive from downtown, or at ~20 min walking distance.

Port's cruising business is constantly growing. In 2016 it handled a record number of ships - 64 (10 more in comparison to 2015) and 85000+ tourists. The first vessel to berth at the newly constructed Pier Head Terminal (2007-inaugurated) was RSSC-Regent 's Seven Seas Voyager (on Sept 9, 2007).

The city itself has a rich maritime heritage, being also the birthplace of the UK's first passenger shipping line - Cunard . Since the Pier Head Terminal's opening (2007), it has served as a homeport (turnaround port serving roundtrips) but also as a transit port on itineraries visiting UK-Ireland-Baltic destinations (Norway, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, Finland, Russia).

Operated by Peel Ports Group, Liverpool Port offers planning, support and assistance by a large team of highly qualified professionals. The Port also provides services to cargo ships (TEU-containers, general-liquid-dry bulks, metals, forest and project cargoes), Ro-Ro ships (vehicles carriers) and Ro-Pax ships (ferries). The cruise port operator provides expert pilots and linesmen (to assist navigation), port workers (stevedoring, porters, passenger handling staff), modern facilities. In 2018, Princes Dock (cruise terminal) generated GBP 7+ million (EUR 8+M) in revenues.

Since 2012, when the city became a cruise homeport, the number of visiting boats doubled - from 31 (2012) to 61 (2015). The number of cruise ship tourists also doubled - from 38656 (2012) to 86365 (2016). Liverpool was ranked the UK’s "best cruise port of call" for 2013 and 2014. In 2014, the City Council announced that Cunard's building would be converted into a cruise terminal. The building was bought for GBP 1,5 million, with the idea to become a ticketing hall for the new terminal. Later was estimated that the building's conversion would cost too much (between GBP 5-60 million) making it not suitable for the purpose.

In 2015, Liverpool's cruise shipping industry brought ~GBP 7 million to the city economy, with over 81000 passengers and 37000 crew. Each cruise tourist spent an estimated GBP 70 in the city, while crew members spent ~GBP 30.

In 2015, the Port hosted Princess Cruises ' (Carnival Corporation brand) 50th-anniversary celebrations and Celebrity Cruises ' (Royal Caribbean brand) 25th-anniversary celebrations. Also in 2015, the Port was visited for the first time by P&O UK 's ship Britannia . Inaugural calls were made by Oceania 's ships Nautica and Marina . Those events were marked with fireworks shows, shoreside concerts, special occasion cakes.

On May 25, 2015, the Port was visited by all the three Cunard liners ( RMS Queen Mary 2 , Queen Elizabeth , Queen Victoria ) for the "Queens Royal Rendezvous" spectacle on Mersey River. On July 4, 2015, QM2 sailed out of Liverpool on a 10-day crossing to Canada (Halifax) and USA (Boston and NYC) commemorating Cunard Line's first-ever Transatlantic cruise crossing. On July 4th, 1840, Cunard Steamship Company started its regular passenger shipping service (with RMS Britannia/paddlewheel steamship) crossing the Atlantic Ocean from Liverpool to Halifax.

In February 2016, City Council announced the preferred site (Princes Jetty) for the construction of a new passenger terminal that could facilitate Transatlantic cruise shipping (eastbound crossings USA-UK). The new terminal building has capacity 3600+ passengers. Previously suggested plans for the Cunard Building (used as terminal) were scrapped in 2014. For the last time, Port Liverpool hosted regular Transatlantic ship crossings in 1968.

In late-March 2016, City Council commissioned early design work and appointed a consultancy team (KKA Architects, Turner & Townsend, Royal Haskoning DHV Engineering) to develop a conceptual design for a new cruise terminal. The building has to be able to handle ~3600 passengers (3 times larger than the existing terminal's /1200 pax). The new terminal has passport control, a waiting lounge, baggage hall, public restrooms, cafe-restaurant, dedicated taxi rank, coach and vehicle pick-up areas, car parking (for up to 300 cars).

On May 5, 2016, officially started Fred Olsen 's homeporting season with Boudicca . The ship had scheduled 16x roundtrips (out of Pier Head) visiting destinations in the Mediterranean (Adriatic), Canary Islands, UK-British Isles, Greenland, as well as Transatlantic roundtrips to Canada and USA/New England.

In June 2016, Port Liverpool contracted the company SCH (Southampton Cargo Handling). The GBP 0,74 million deal was for 3-year stevedore cruise ship services. SCH handles all cruise vessels visiting Liverpool and employs locals for stevedoring. The contract was renewed in 2019 (thru 2022) and 2023 (thru 2026). On August 19, 2016, City Council approved a GBP 0,95 million (USD 1,2M) feasibility study into the new passenger terminal development. Port's 2016 schedule had a total of 63 ship visits (9 more over 2015) bringing 114,676 tourists and generating economic impact ~GBP 7 million (EUR 8,2M). Maiden ports calls in 2016 were 4 - Artania , Amadea , Disney Magic , L'Austral .

In 2018, Port had booked 57 cruise ship berthings, with estimated 100,000+ passengers and crew. Season's highlights included 5 maiden calls ( AIDAaura , Ocean Dream , Seabourn Ovation , Viking Sun , MS Berlin ) and two overnights ( Celebrity Eclipse/ June 12, and MS Europa 2 /Sept 8). In April 2018, City Council officially approved the GBP 50 million cruise terminal project that includes Princes Jetty (on Princes Parade) to be demolished and the new facility to be built as a suspended dock (on River Mersey). The new terminal has capacity to handle the world's largest passenger ships .

Since July 2018, the deepwater container terminal Liverpool2 is included in 2M's ( shipping alliance Maersk+MSC) Transatlantic service. With the new line, 2M temporarily switched TA2 (Felixstowe to Liverpool) while to Maersk's Colombia Express (South America) was added Liverpool for exports to Newark. Both services are weekly and include Liverpool as the final call port on these westbound Atlantic crossings. Among the UK export cargoes are Scotch whiskey, food products, machinery. The new services also opened direct UK-USA links from Liverpool to Charleston SC and Savannah GA . Liverpool2 terminal serves smaller-sized boxships (max capacity 8500 TEUs), while larger vessels use RSCT (Royal Seaforth Container Terminal). In early-2018, Peel Ports started rail freight service from the Port via partnership with DB Cargo AG (Deutsche Bahn AG).

In November 2019, ACL (Atlantic Container Line, subsidiary of Grimaldi Group ) signed with Peel Ports Group a 15-year RSCT concession extension (until 2035). Peel Ports in 2019 started a development project to expand RSCT for handling larger-sized boxships. The project (2019-2021) included widening the Seaforth Basin (by 28 m / 92 ft) and purchasing two new ZPMC STS (ship-to-shore container cranes / China-made - by Zhenhua Heavy Industries). Now RSCT has 8x STS cranes plus 22x cantilever RMGs (rail-mounted gantry cranes). Each ZPMC STS crane has height 92 m (302 ft / to frame's top) and 132 m (433 ft / with raised boom) and weighs ~1600 tons. ZPMC STS cranes are with capacity ~30 moves per hour, can outreach 24x TEUs, handle max loads 85 tons and operate in max wind speeds 55 mph (88 kph).

In 2019/pre-COVID crisis, the cruise port handled 86 ship calls (~40% increase over 2018). In 2022 were handled 107 calls and ~200,000 tourists (passengers plus crew). For season 2023, the Port had booked a total of 115 ship berthings (including ~40 roundtrips) at Liverpool Cruise Terminal.

In December 2022, SCH Logistics signed a multi-year lease agreement with Peel Ports Group for a major car storage and transporter park expansion. The project (budgeted GBP 1+ million) was completed in ~3 months and increased the Port's vehicle storage capacity/park size by 22% (from 8 to 10,3 acres). The expanded parking facility is a hub dedicated to newly manufactured vehicles (automobiles arriving on RO-RO ships) and then handled by SCH's staff (unloading and storing) prior to their delivery by the manufacturer to its car dealers.

Port Liverpool, along with its cruise terminals also has ferry terminals, containership terminal, drydock facilities (for ship refurbishments and repairs ).

Next is the lengthy video about 2015's Cunard celebrations in Liverpool. The unique event featured precise maneuvering by the Cunard cruise ships in front of thousands of spectators. Following the rotation, the ships formed an arrowhead formation before the three abreast arrangement - their first time ever. With all 3 cruise vessels aligned on the river, QM2 sounded the anniversary year number (175) by blowing 1 single short blast followed by 7 and then 5 blasts. The '"cruise ship dance" was culminated with a salute by 9 jets from Red Arrows (UK's Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team). Following the celebrations, QM2 left the port. Followed fireworks and digital light shows at Pier Head.

Liverpool cruise terminal

Port Liverpool's cruise season runs from March through November. Until mid-2012, the embarkation and disembarkation was at Langton Dock. Port's current cruise ship berth is a floating pontoon with tidal range 10 m (33 ft). This means that at certain times its access bridges are very steep. To cruise passengers, the port provides mobility buses to transport tourists between the gangway and terminal's passenger lounge.

Pier Head cruise terminal

location - Princes Parade (at Pier Head, next to the Royal Liver Building).

Royal Liver Building is one of the city's "Three Graces" on the waterfront - sided by "Cunard Building" and the "Port of Liverpool Building". Unlike many other terminals, Liverpool's cruise ship terminal is located at only 20 min walking distance (approx 1 km / 0,6 mi) away from downtown.

The cruise terminal has a small building. Adjacent to its exit point are public phones and a taxi rank. In several outlets outside the terminal are available restaurants and cafes, also ATMs and currency exchange. The passenger terminal building has refreshment facilities, restrooms and welcome desk. The building is small-sized, so it is recommended to avoid early arrival.

Berth's capacity is 2 ships (docking along the quay). The berth is capable of accommodating ships with max LOA length 350 m (1148 ft) - no vessel width or draught restrictions.

Next drone video shows Liverpool's Gate 3 cruise terminal and Celebrity Silhouette . The ship visited Liverpool on July 23, 2017, on a 12-night British Isles roundtrip from  Amsterdam Holland .

(NEW) Liverpool cruise terminal

In December 2016, was launched an international search for a technical team to design a new cruise ship terminal in Liverpool. The new facility will be located on River Mersey (former Princes Jetty off Princes Parade), approx 1000 ft (305 m) downriver from the Pier Head terminal.

The new passenger terminal can handle turnaround cruise vessels (on roundtrip UK itineraries) with max capacity 3600 passengers. The terminal building is 2-storey (sized 10,000m2), with baggage hall, passenger lounge, check-in facilities, passport control, cafe-restaurant, bar lounge, public toilets, taxi rank, vehicle pick up point. Development plans were based on land reclaimed from River Mersey. The project also included the construction of a new quay wall, changes on Princess Parade (allowing tour buses and shuttles), also a new passenger terminal, luggage storage facility, passport control, vehicle pick up area, large car parking.

In mid-May 2017, City Council appointed Place North West team to design the new cruise terminal facility. Engineering consultancy company Ramboll will lead a 4-member team (2 architects, 1 cost manager, 1 planning consultant) to work up detailed designs for the facility. Then will be submitted a planning application (for Princes Jetty). The Ramboll company will then manage the project and assist with construction monitoring and contractor procurement. Additional (new) elements at the cruise ship facility could also include a hotel (capacity 200 rooms) and a multi-story car parking (capacity 1100 vehicles). However, the parking may be located further north, to be able to support also Ten Streets and Bramley Moore Dock stadium.

In April 2018, City Council approved the GBP 50 million cruise terminal project. By this development, Princes Jetty will be demolished and the new facility will be built on a suspended dock (on River Mersey). The terminal will have capacity to handle world's largest cruise liners . An additional GBP 32 million were assigned for upgrading road A565 (connecting Liverpool with Tarleton) to support the new terminal, plus GBP 20 million for a newbuild link road extending Leeds Str to the waterfront.

Construction works started in May 2018, with scheduled completion in 2022 spring. Major works included building a vehicle linkspan bridge, pedestrian walkway, landing stage improvements, new ancillary buildings, Princes Parade improvements (to incorporate terminal parking and passenger pick-up/drop-off areas), pedestrian crossing facilities.

In 2019 started the GBP 32 million project for upgrading the A565 road (Liverpool to Tarleton, Lancashire) to support the new cruise terminal. Also started works on the GBP 20 million project to build a link road extending Leeds Street to Liverpool's waterfront and supporting the new Isle of Man Ferry Terminal.

Next video shows the signature exterior and interior design elements of the new cruise terminal.

Liverpool ferry terminals

Liverpool's ferry port terminal (Pier Head Landing Stage Terminal) is located off St Nicholas Place Car Park at Princes Half-Tide Dock (Princes Parade).

(NEW) Isle of Man-Liverpool ferry terminal

In September 2018 were announced port's plans for building the new "Isle of Man Ferry Terminal" at Princes Half Tide Dock. The facility is located approx 700 m (2200 ft) from the current Pier Head berth at Princes Half-Tide Dock (within Liverpool Waters and Peel Land).

The existing Pier Head terminal will be reconstructed into a dedicated cruise terminal as part of the Liverpool Waterfront development project (budgeted GBP 5 billion / EUR 5,6B).

The new passenger terminal's cost was initially estimated at GBP 36,5 million (EUR 40,6M). Funding was subject to Tynwald's approval. The project's initial cost was GBP 30M, which increased due to additional structural and construction works - on the site and the quay walls.

The ferry terminal's max capacity is 1000 passengers and 200 vehicles. The inauguration was in March 2021. Wheeled freight and passenger vehicles are served by a new link road (project cost GBP 7,6 million / EUR 8,5 million).

In late-October 2018 were released the designs of the terminal's building and infrastructure.

On April 9, 2019, the ferry terminal project was approved by the Manx Government, which signed a long-term leasehold agreement with Peel Ports for the site. This was the first time when the Isle of Man Government became a UK property owner.

In late-April 2021 was officially announced that due to the Coronavirus crisis, the Isle of Man Ferry Terminal in Liverpool will cost at least GBP 43 million (~EUR 49,5M / ~USD 59,9M) and be completed in March 2022 (instead of December 2021). The additional costs (~5% over the original budget) were partly due to the need to strengthen the harbour's walls (to cope with the impact of the powerful bow thrusters of the new ship). Works were also delayed by the archaeological excavation on the site and the need to dispose of unexploded bombs from WW2 (1939-45).

In July 2021 was announced that the Manx Government will have to spend an additional GBP 13,8 million (EUR 16M / USD 18,9M) on the new ferry terminal (total cost GBP 55,8M / EUR 64,76M / USD 76,4M) in Douglas. The extra money was needed to tackle "unforeseen problems", including staffing difficulties, shortage of materials, COVID rules-associated costs.

Both facilities (in Liverpool and Douglas) serve the regularly scheduled crossings provided by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Ltd.

Liverpool avoids damaging defeat to Man United but drops points in three-way race for the title

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Having ended Liverpool’s quadruple challenge, Manchester United looked set to deliver a major blow to Jurgen Klopp’s hopes of bowing out at the end of the season with a second Premier League title.

Time will tell how damaging a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday will be to the Merseyside club in the three-way fight at the top, but it could have been so much worse if not for Mohamed Salah’s late penalty.

“We should have won the game, that is clear,” Klopp said. “As far as I’m concerned, we have a point more than we did before.”

It wasn’t only the prospect of defeat at the home of Liverpool’s fiercest rivals that felt so significant, but the nature of it.

Klopp’s team had totally dominated by raining down shots on United’s goal in a mismatched first half, but only managed to lead 1-0 at the break through Luis Diaz’s goal.

The atmosphere totally changed when Bruno Fernandes struck a stunning equalizer from inside the center circle after a Liverpool mistake and Kobbie Mainoo curled a superb shot into the top corner to give United the lead.

After victories for Arsenal and Manchester City on Saturday, Liverpool was heading toward a second defeat to United, after losing in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup last month.

That was until Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s reckless lunge at Harvey Elliott led to referee Anthony Taylor pointing to the spot and Salah converting.

The draw moved Liverpool level on points with first-place Arsenal, but behind on goal difference. City is a point behind in third in an ever-tightening title race.

UNITED FIGHTS

Erik ten Hag needed a performance from his players in front of new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe.

A desperately disappointing week had seen his team blow winning positions in stoppage time at Brentford and Chelsea to deliver blows to United’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

While this was another late setback, United’s response to being totally outplayed in the first half will have provided some encouragement to the manager.

But the pressure will still be on him to salvage a campaign that has failed to live up to expectations.

Liverpool cruise industry expected to double after £25 million investment

  • Port of Liverpool

cruise liverpool may

One of the largest cruise operators in the world has promised to invest an estimated £25 million into Liverpool 's port, with the money expected to double the city's cruise industry.

Global Ports Holding Plc (GPH) has signed a 50-year agreement with The Mersey Docks and Harbour Company Ltd, which allows it to operate at Liverpool Cruise Port.

In order to obtain licences and permits, GPH has promised major investments into the port's infrastructure, with an exact figure expected once construction begins.

Plans include building a new terminal building, with waterfront shops and restaurants, and a new floating pontoon which would allow two 300 metre cruise ships to berth at the same time, and mean up to 7,000 passengers a day.

The deal comes just days after Liverpool City Council agreed to give up its lease on the port, after it was projected to make a loss of £1 million in 2024.

Andrew Lewis, Chief Executive of Liverpool City Council, said: “Responsibility for Liverpool’s cruise operations now passes to a world-leading operator, with ambitious plans to grow Liverpool’s position as an excellent cruise and tourism destination."

David Huck, Chief Operating Officer at Peel Ports Group said: "Liverpool City Council’s stewardship of the port over the last two decades has truly transformed the City into a thriving cruise tourism destination. We see this new chapter as an opportunity for us to build upon that legacy.

"We look forward to making that vision a reality alongside GPH through a strategic partnership and our combined maritime and cruise expertise."

In 2023, Liverpool welcomed 102 cruise ships and over 186,000 passengers.

This is expected to increase to over 200,000 passengers in 2024 and exceed 300,000 per annum once the new infrastructure works are completed.

Liverpool may be without seven players vs Man Utd as key man set to return from injury

Liverpool knows it must beat Manchester United to return to the top of the table. Jürgen Klopp remains without as many as seven players for the match.

Liverpool will bid to return to the top of the Premier League when it takes on Manchester United on Sunday. The match at Old Trafford is the second between the sides in just three weeks after the Reds' quadruple dream was ended in the FA Cup last month.

Title rivals Arsenal and Manchester City both picked up wins on Saturday to put the pressure back on Liverpool . The Gunners went top after cruising past Brighton while Kevin De Bruyne stole the show in City's victory at Crystal Palace.

Jürgen Klopp could be without as many as seven players for the match, with midfielder Wataru Endō expected to be fit. He sat out the midweek success over Sheffield United after picking up a knock against Brighton.

Klopp has confirmed that the injury situation is set to improve considerably next week but he remains without a host of key players. No.1 goalkeeper Alisson is still sidelined with a hamstring problem, with Caoimhín Kelleher once again deputizing at Old Trafford.

Trent Alexander-Arnold should return to full team training next week after a knee problem while Diogo Jota is also not too far away after he was taken off on a stretcher at Brentford back in mid-February. Young midfielder Stefan Bajčetić has stepped up his rehabilitation with the club's Under-21s in recent weeks but is not yet ready to return to match action.

Elsewhere, Klopp admits it is unlikely that Joël Matip will return before the end of the campaign after suffering an ACL injury back in December. The defender is out of contract in the summer and may have played his last game for the club. The same applies to Thiago Alcântara after another setback while Ben Doak is also still out for the Reds.

Klopp has dismissed the suggestion that Liverpool has a favorable run-in compared to Arsenal and City, with the match at Old Trafford the first of five away games left. He told BBC Sport: "Somebody said we had the best fixture list or schedule. I looked at it and I really don't know how you can have had that idea. Maybe I'm too negative but it's a tough one, good opponents. But we are ready and we want to be in that fight."

Liverpool.com says: The injury issues have plagued Klopp's squad all season and although the picture is improving by the week, the Reds boss must continue without several key players. Alisson and Alexander-Arnold would usually be guaranteed starters while Jota was in excellent form before injury. The trio returning to fitness at this stage of the season is a timely boost.

Carnival Cruise Line forced to make beverage package change

B oth Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean have been forced to make major operational changes after the tragic bridge collapse in Baltimore. After Key Bridge was hit by a freight ship that led to its destruction, the port that both cruise lines use has been closed for the foreseeable future.

It was a terrible tragedy, but neither cruise line could simply stop operating because they had ships at sea scheduled to return to that port. Both Carnival ( CCL ) and Royal Caribbean acted very quickly and shifted their Baltimore sailings to Norfolk, VA.

Related: Carnival follows Royal Caribbean in fixing worst part of cruising

That's a massive operational feat to pull off which both companies achieved in just a few days. Carnival shared how it was handling a sailing that left from Baltimore before the bridge collapse

"Carnival Legend is scheduled to return from its current voyage on Sunday, March 31. It will now return to Norfolk on Sunday, and guests will be provided complimentary bus service back to Baltimore. Carnival Legend’s next seven-day itinerary on March 31 will then operate from and return to Norfolk," the cruise line shared.

The port switch, however, will have a negative impact on future cruises that many passengers will be angry about.

Carnival may get boos for Cheers

Sailing from different ports means that the local laws and taxes may be different. When Royal Caribbean sails from Galveston, for example, people who buy its Unlimited Beverage Package can only order from a limited menu until the ship hits international waters.

Cheers offers unlimited water, soda, juice, and specialty coffee along with 15 alcoholic beverages for $59.95 per day on sailings of six days or more when purchased in advance. Shorter sailings cost $69.95 per day and all packages are charged an 18%b gratuity.

People buying onboard pay an extra $5 per day and you can only buy the package for the duration of the cruise. In addition, all adults sailing in the same room have to buy the drink package (although exceptions may be made if passengers call the cruise line).

Carnival, for its sailings from Norfolk has shared that it has to make a major change to its Cheers Beverage Package on those sailings. The cruise line has adopted the rules it uses on sailings from New York and Texas for its Norfolk cruise.

Carnival changes Cheers for Norfolk sailings

While Royal Caribbean offers a limited drink menu out of Galveston (the cruise line does not sail from New York), it does still offer unlimited drinks to people who buy its beverage package. Carnival takes a different tact and does not offer Cheers! on night one on sailings from New York and Texas.

That's the policy its taking in Norfolk and any passengers who paid for Cheers on upcoming sailings will get a refund for the first day of their cruise.

“Our temporary shift in operations from Baltimore to Norfolk for Carnival Legend necessitates a slight modification in how we implement the Cheers! program. We cannot offer Cheers! benefits while in waters under the Commonwealth of Virginia’s jurisdiction. Therefore, we will not offer Cheers! benefits on the first day of your cruise,” according to an email from Guest Services Vice President Colleen Oliverio.

Can't seems to be more of a question of choice as Royal Caribbean has not made the same change.

"For Royal, you can absolutely use your drink package immediately however TABC law limits cruise ships to only sell alcohol made in the great state of Texas while in port. once the ship has moved into international waters, full bars open up. Carnival on the other hand just chooses to hold off altogether with their drink package making their Cheers begin on day 2 (You don't pay for day 1). you can still purchase drink by drink, but they too have to follow the same TABC laws mentioned," Todd W. poste don the Royal Caribbean blog .

Royal Caribbean has not said it plans to have any drink package limitations on Norfolk sailings.

Talking points: Erik ten Hag on borrowed time, Liverpool fail to punish the chaos and Man Utd’s midfield conundrum

author image

Managers Erik ten Hag and Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah

The Premier League served up yet another barnstorming match on Sunday as Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw by Manchester United . But far from being an even contest it was as one-sided as any match the profligate Merseysiders have had at Old Trafford in recent years.

You could be forgiven for thinking Thursday’s seven-goal thriller between Chelsea and United at Stamford Bridge had simply been un-paused, with the match settling into an almost identical, helter-skelter rhythm in the early exchanges.

There were chances at both ends, the centre of the pitch was once again almost entirely bypassed, while Liverpool frequently broke against a defence they outnumbered – though did not make the most of the many opportunities that came their way.

With their ninth shot in just the 23rd minute, Luis Diaz did finally give the visitors the breakthrough that had started to feel inevitable. The chances only continued after that and, as has so often been the case for United this season, you started to wonder how many goals they might end up conceding.

But United also have a habit of hanging in and they were gifted a typically barmy goal within minutes of the restart as Bruno Fernandes scored from virtually the halfway line. Still Liverpool kept finding space on the break, still they kept wasting chances, and they were punished by another world-class finish – this time from Kobbie Mainoo.

Mohamed Salah struck late from the penalty spot as the spoils were shared , but the result did little to arrest the feeling that United are heading backwards under Erik ten Hag. A point, yes, but 28 more shots conceded and more questions than answers…

Will Ten Hag’s refusal to tighten up his side be his undoing?

Since the turn of the year, United have now given up 25.16 Expected Goals (with 3.92 added against Liverpool) – five times the tally of defensive leaders Arsenal. That is perhaps an unfair comparison given how ridiculously well the Gunners have defended recently, with their title charge built on an impenetrable back-line that has given up just 5.08 xG in the last 11 games.

But, time and time again, Ten Hag has said he is not concerned by the volume of shots his side give up and has done nothing to try and fix it. He believes they are low-quality chances and is content for matches to turn into games of transition roulette – you attack, we attack – with his side’s result determined not by control or patterns of play, but by the clinicalness of his attack and the reflexes of his goalkeeper.

Liverpool celebrate against Manchester United

That was true again on Sunday, with United showing flickers on the break early on – without actually registering a shot until Fernandes’ 50th-minute goal – but looking even more exposed going the other way. It almost feels like Ten Hag is trying to weaponise the sense of dread opposition teams feel when they miss a plethora of chances, while relying on worldies and moments of magic at the other end.

As the game developed, and Liverpool got to grips with United’s high pressing, it became so easy for the Merseysiders to pass around it. Players were stepping up out of sync and the energy progressively dipped. The first half ended without a shot from the hosts (for the first time since October 2015), while Liverpool had mustered 15 and enjoyed 58 per cent possession.

Even in amongst Fernandes’ leveller and Mainoo’s brilliant strike, Liverpool still continued to break forward at will and should have punished the home side; this was very much a case of opportunity missed for the visitors. At times, players were picking up the ball on the edge of their own box and running to United’s without ever encountering a red shirt.

It is so at odds with the approaches of virtually every other top-level club in the Premier League and around Europe, where control is paramount. To willingly sacrifice it – and, in fact, to embed a degree of chaos into your gameplan – feels like the biggest red flag against Ten Hag.

He has repeatedly recoiled at suggestions it is not sustainable and perhaps that stubbornness will be what ultimately prompts Ineos to look elsewhere come the end of the season.

Midfield goalscorers but a dilemma all the same

A big consequence of United’s frenzied, end-to-end matches is that the midfield largely gets bypassed. The game against Chelsea looked more like two attack-versus-defence training drills taking place at either end of the pitch while against Liverpool, United were constantly running back towards their own goal and had no sustained possession themselves.

That leaves little room for a more cultured midfielder like Mainoo to get on the ball and his fabulous goal rather papered over the cracks of a game in which he struggled. Against Chelsea, his passing accuracy was the third lowest on the pitch – below even Andre Onana and ahead of only Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund.

Manchester United v Liverpool FC - Premier League

It was a similar story against Liverpool. He ended the first half having completed just eight passes – again, only Garnacho and Hojlund managed less. He was caught on the ball several times, gifting possession to Liverpool before a break that should have resulted in a goal for Salah, while he looked lost off the ball and was frequently pulled out of position.

If Mainoo’s struggles on Sunday were a symptom of the side’s structure-less play, skipper Fernandes’ performance may well have been part of the cause. The Portuguese midfielder was always United’s biggest threat but his high-risk, boom-or-bust approach only feeds the chaos. In attempting to play a killer pass every time, he leaves no margin for error and often just invites more pressure.

Throw in the leggy Casemiro, who put up as much resistance as a training cone at times and had a shocking pass accuracy of 67 per cent, and you have a midfield trio that does not quite work despite the goal contributions of Mainoo and Fernandes. The biggest annoyance for United will be imagining how good this team could be – with this never-say-die attitude and the energy of Old Trafford – if only they had more structure and control.

What now for Liverpool’s title aspirations?

Such is the competitiveness at the top end of the Premier League table, this feels like a huge moment in the title race. The result still leaves Liverpool in second place on goal difference, having netted nine fewer goals than Arsenal, but it is a massive opportunity missed.

For all their struggles, United have a solid home record under Erik ten Hag and had beaten Liverpool in two of their previous four meetings – including last month’s incredible FA Cup tie. But Jurgen Klopp’s have never faced a United team in such miserable form, or who give up so many chances.

Make no mistake, Manchester City and Arsenal would have had this match wrapped up before half-time and there is just a little question mark over quite how good this Liverpool team really are – or whether their challenge is based more on vibes and the pursuit of a farewell gift for Klopp.

Manchester United v Liverpool FC - Premier League

The German was raging on the touchline for much of the second half, unhappy with how wasteful his side were and how often they were tempted into joining in with the chaos United were encouraging. When cool heads were needed, they got erratic and sloppy (particularly in front of goal) and that is not a good sign going into the final seven games of the season.

It has often been said that Liverpool have the easiest run-in of the title contenders, but they still have to face a Crystal Palace side who caused City problems and then have three away games in a row at Fulham, Everton and West Ham. All three feel capable of producing similar levels of chaos, while Tottenham and Aston Villa follow after that.

The danger for all three title contenders is that it could turn into a two-horse race very, very quickly.

Inside Tom Cruise And Elsina Khayrova's Whirlwind Fling

Tom Cruise smiling

When you're as famous as Tom Cruise, it can be difficult to keep your romances a secret. The A-list actor has famously been married three times, and each one had its fair share of media attention. Cruise was first wed to Mimi Rogers from 1987 until 1990, then married to Nicole Kidman from 1990 until 2001, and then tied the knot with Katie Holmes in 2006 before they officially divorced in 2006. However, it seemed like Cruise was able to keep his romantic life a little more out of the spotlight following that high-profile split with Holmes — that is, until the world caught word of Cruise's apparent romance with Elsina Khayrova .

Cruise and Khayrova, a socialite and former model, went somewhat public with their romance in late December 2023. That was when the  Daily Mail reported the star was spotted getting very cozy with his new love at a party in London. "They were inseparable, clearly a couple. He seemed to be besotted with her," an onlooker even told the outlet at the time. That outing came shortly after the two first met, with  Page Six  reporting the two crossing paths after Khayrova accompanied a friend to a tea party Cruise was hosting at his London home. It seemed like things were going well for these two — at least for a little while, anyway.

Tom Cruise reportedly met Elsina Khayrova's kids

A sign that things are going well for any new couple? Meeting the kids. Elsina Khayrova apparently felt comfortable enough with Tom Cruise to introduce him to her children. Page Six reported in February 2024 that Cruise had met his love interests' children, a son and a daughter, who she shares with her former husband, Dimitry Tsvetkov. You may not have heard of Tsvetkov, but he's actually a pretty big deal. Khayrova's ex is reportedly a Russian oligarch and also sells diamonds.

Reports claimed around the same time that Cruise was very much into the ex-model. In January 2024, a source dished on the blossoming romance to Us Weekly : "They're very happy. And Tom's extremely confident about it working out for the long term." The insider also shared that Cruise and Khayrova's relationship had started more as a friendship that blossomed into romance, and also noted that Khayrova was very understanding and supportive of Cruise's busy career. Two months later, a source dished again on the twosome's apparent love to  Us Weekly , sharing that Cruise was supposedly even thinking about things long-term with his girlfriend. Sounds like a perfect match, right? Well ... maybe not exactly.

Things cooled off almost as quickly as they began (but he may be moving on)

Despite the multiple claims Tom Cruise and Elsina Khayrova may have been headed for the long hall, it seems like it all got a little too much for the "Top Gun" star. In February 2024, around two months after he and Khayrova were spotted in London, a source told  Page Six  that Cruise had second thoughts about their romance. They claimed Cruise, who doesn't appear to have spoken publicly about Khayrova, wanted to slow down and felt all the speculation in the media had gotten too intense. "He's cooled things down," they claimed, suggesting Cruise may not be ready for a long-time love with the socialite after all. But that didn't necessarily mean a full-on breakup, as they purported they were still in touch.

But fans maybe shouldn't put a lot of stock in the possibility of these two getting together. That's because, if you believe InTouch 's insider at least, Cruise has eyes for his "Top Gun: Maverick" co-star and "At Midnight" actor Monica Barbaro . They suggested the actor was looking to move on from his brief romance with Khayrova and may just have been looking to do that with Barbaro. "Tom thinks she's stunningly beautiful," the source said in March 2024. "He'd like to explore a relationship with her." It seems like we'll just have to wait and see what's next in the love life of this superstar.
