Best known for their viral TikTok song Like 1999, the indie pop band will be playing three east coast dates.

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Valley has had the kind of success that’s only possible in the internet era. After meeting in a practice studio booking mix-up, the four musicians joined forces to form one indie-pop wonder.

Their first release after being signed, Sucks To See You Doing Better, got the buzz going – it was nominated for a coveted Juno Award and helped gain new fans across North America. But it was the group’s 2021 song Like 1999 that propelled them to dizzying heights.

This August, the band will be heading to Australia for the first time ever in support of their third album, Lost In Translation, set to be released on June 23. So far, fans have heard the singles Break For You, Throwback Tears and Good, But Not For You from the upcoming album.

Valley has already brought the tour through North America, where they sold out gigs in their Toronto hometown as well as Vancouver, New York and Los Angeles. Their quick jaunt in Australia will see them play in Brisbane and Syndey before finishing off at Melbourne’s Max Watt’s on August 18.

“We are so excited to play Australia because it feels like such a faraway land to us. We’ve been practising saying our ‘nourahs’ and buying the highest SPF we can possibly find,” says the band. “We’re coming for you Aus!”

Tickets to see Valley this August are set to go on sale on May 26 at 11am local time with a presale for Frontier members starting on May 24. There will also be VIP packages available for each show featuring a band meet-and-greet, early listening to two tracks, as well as posters and merch.

VALLEY Navigates Their Soundtrack Of Life With Their Latest Album And Tour

Valley Band Portrait

Emerging from the vibrant Toronto suburbs in 2014, the indie-pop band sensation VALLEY could have never fathomed the tremendous growth they would achieve as a band today.

With the release of EPs and singles, the talented band comprising Rob Laska, Mickey Brandolino, Alex Dimauro and Karah James made its mark on the music industry with its highly-celebrated debut album, MAYBE , in 2019. Fueled by coming-of-age themes and cinematic narratives of love and friendship, the band embarked on a musical journey that resonated deeply with fans worldwide. Now, four years later, VALLEY returns triumphantly with its latest creation, Lost In Translation , alongside an exhilarating new world tour spanning the continents of North America, Australia and Asia.

Valley Band Portrait

Since its inaugural “Get To Know” moment with Beyond The Stage four years ago, the band’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. Its musical odyssey has encompassed the release of three captivating EPs, performances at music festivals such as Governors Ball, headlining tours and sharing the stage with esteemed indie bands like COIN and The BAND CAMINO. Alongside these milestones, the band has also unleashed a multitude of sensational singles on various music platforms, solidifying its presence in the industry.

Yet, despite the surface success, the band emphasizes that t he best kind of growth to see was within each other.

“I think on a personal level, we’ve just done a lot of growing. It sounds really broad, but I think there’s been a lot of personal growth in the band and I think we’ve honed in on what we’re trying to bring to the table with what VALLEY is, sonically and emotionally,” frontman Rob Laska said. “I think our live shows have grown a lot too. We’ve put a lot of time into our live shows because that’s where we translate most of what VALLEY is. We’ve worked a lot on our songcraft and I think we’ve really tried to sharpen our pencils a lot with songwriting. We’ve done a lot of self-exploration, band exploration — we’ve done a lot of band therapy and personal therapy. It’s just been a lot of both artistic and personal growth.”

valley band australia tour

After dropping numerous EPs and singles, the band felt poised to release its long-awaited sophomore album. However, with the global pandemic disrupting life as we knew it, the members made a crucial decision to hold off on the album’s release, prioritizing the listeners’ experience.

“In the state of the world for the last couple years through the pandemic and everything, we were on the edge of releasing albums, but we didn’t want people’s experience with an album to be alone in their bedroom,” said Laska. “We wanted them to be able to go and live their life to our album and soundtrack their life. I think now this record is more about living and soundtracking your life now that the pandemic is over. People are really heavy on going to shows, traveling and doing all the things that they really wanna live, you know what I mean? I think this record is providing that and it’s just the right time.”

valley band australia tour

Having penned the first album during their late teens and early twenties, Lost In Translation now emerges in their mid-twenties, revealing the band’s remarkable sonic evolution as both individuals and a collective.

“It’s a different world, we’re different people but in a healthy way,” Laska said. “I think there are a lot of similarities that people start to kind of trickle in because it’s still the same people making the music, but nothing’s changed. We still pretty much produce everything, we write everything together, the process has never changed.”

The new album delves deep into the emotional journeys of all four members, as they grapple with their inner searchings and seek their rightful place in the world.

valley band australia tour

“I think there’s a song for every feeling that we’ve experienced in the last few years between records. I think every experience we’ve had, every relationship, everything we’ve been through — I think there’s a song, like a sliver of each feeling of where we’ve all been,” bassist Alex Dimauro said.

The title track was initially written for the sucks to see you doing better EP, and despite unsuccessful attempts to fit it into the previous EPs, it ultimately found its home as the essence of the entire album.

“I think what VALLEY does really well with is storytelling,” Laska said. I think the album is just a very beautiful short story of just our four lives of where we are right now, and that’s kind of in VALLEY forever.”

valley band australia tour

As the musical sound evolved and grew, so did the band’s audience. Globally, the band ventured across North America, Asia and Australia playing sold-out shows to tens of thousands of listeners. Among the enthusiastic crowds are devoted fans who know every song by heart and brand newcomers who are just discovering the music.

“It’s been nuts. At the beginning of the tour, people started filming the new songs, putting it online and stuff and now every show, there’s like fans that haven’t seen us live yet and they’re showing up and singing the new lyrics because they’ve watched the Youtube videos,” Dimauro said. “That’s a really cool feeling and it’s really cool to see the reception and the kind of snowball effect of the new songs live.”

Valley Band Portrait

And while VALLEY may be “lost in translation” across its album and tour, they’ve managed to find themselves on a path that only leads up.

“I love living in the world we are now musically,” Laska said. “There’s so many positives and it’s incredible that you can put a song online and literally your life could change. We’ve had that and it’s incredible.”

Hints and tips for improving your chances of getting The Corrs tickets

Make sure you have a my ticketmaster account.

Get the basics covered before tickets go on sale by logging in and checking your Ticketmaster account ahead of time. If you don’t have a Ticketmaster Account then make sure you sign up in advance –  Ticketmaster.com.au .

Sign into your My Ticketmaster account ahead of time

Remember to triple check your passwords, account information, and billing information are all filled in correctly in advance, that way you’re not facing any last-minute account updates when trying to process your order.

Keep your options open with ‘Best Available’

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as you are progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the  Waiting Room  and when you’re being pushed through  the Smart Queue  and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. The queuing system that appears on your screen will place you at the front of the line as soon as possible.

Remember: there are a lot of fans

We’re expecting this to be a very popular event. When a popular event goes on sale there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of customers all attempting to purchase tickets at the same time. Tickets are sold as long as seats are available, and when an act is this popular, sometimes they go very quickly.

Be sure to follow the above tips to ensure you have the best chance of snapping up some tickets.

The Corrs   will be coming to UTAS Stadium in Launceston in November 2023.  Tickets are on sale via Ticketmaster.com.au.

Illyria and Bolt Gun - Perth

*CAVE IN & LLNN do not appear in Perth  Acclaimed post-metal band THE OCEAN return to Australia this June for their first headline tour in almost a decade. The Germany-based group stunned audiences across the nation on their 2023 tour with Ne Obliviscaris and Rivers of Nihil, but couldn’t wait to follow up and cement their glory with their biggest Australian production yet and a tour package of their own featuring the legendary US metal/hardcore pioneers CAVE IN for their first-ever Australian shows, and insanely heavy Danish label mates LLNN.

2023 also saw the release of the band’s ninth album Holocene - the heavily conceptual collective’s most exploratory and varied release yet - and the conclusion of the paleontological era they began with 2018’s Phanerozoic I: Paleozoic and continued with 2020’s Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic / Cenozoic. Having flirted more with extreme metal influences on these records than ever before, the arrival of Holocene saw the band - lead by guitarist and mastermind Robin Staps - forge a new path into a world of looped electronics and more subtle melodic experimentation while philosophically reflecting on humanity as always, this time on the nascent realities of a post-pandemic world.

Formed in 1995 in Massachusetts by singer/guitarist Stephen Brodsky, CAVE IN was ahead of its time from the very beginning, helping to define the then-primitive metalcore genre with a more creatively elevated slant on their 1998 debut album Until Your Heart Stops. Not content to remain pigeonholed, the band veered into more accessible psychedelic ‘space rock’ sounds on subsequent releases before a brief hiatus in the mid 2000s. After the tragic death of bassist/vocalist Caleb Schofield in 2018, Converge bassist Nate Newton picked up his friend’s instrument and the band was able to continue on its legacy, resulting in their seventh album - 2022’s Heavy Pendulum (Relapse Records) - a culmination of all the sounds the band had explored throughout their tenure and then some, with universal praise

labeling it everything from sludge metal to post-grunge and even thrash.

Rounding out this trio into a certified powerhouse of thinking man’s metal with some unsubtle bludgeoning, Denmark’s LLNN sound like the apocalypse on steroids. Signed to The Ocean’s own Pelagic Records, this absolutely crushing four piece unleash vicious sonic textures atop of a percussive barrage of unhinged rhythmic destruction. Three albums deep, 2021’s Unmaker is a pillar of sonic force so insanely heavy that words fall short.

Walking and cycling paths to get $100m budget boost

Walking and cycling paths will get a $100m boost in the upcoming federal budget, AAP reports, in the biggest national active transport investment in more than a decade.

The transport minister, Catherine King, announced the investment today, with the government to create an Active Transport Fund for infrastructure in urban and regional areas.

The investment, which is expected to be available from July 2025, comes 15 years after a $40m package for bikeways was introduced in the wake of the global financial crisis.

It also comes weeks after the Labor government revealed plans to introduce car emission limits to encourage more manufacturers to import low-emission vehicles and cut transport pollution.

King said the $100m investment would fund bicycle and walking paths around Australia, and would also pay for upgrades to existing infrastructure. Guidelines for the fund will be created after talks with state and territory governments.

Men jailed for child abuse committed ‘some of the most evil crimes imaginable’: AFP commander

Continuing from our last post: the two NSW men’s “criminal behaviour” has been called “perhaps the most disturbing representation of what child sex offenders are capable of” by AFP Cmdr Kate Ferry , as put in a NSW police media release.

The pair were arrested in June 2020, after AFP eastern command child protection operations and NSW police child abuse and sex crimes squad investigators executed search warrants on NSW’s mid-north coast.

Ferry said the pursuit of anyone producing and sharing child abuse material was “relentless”:

Operation Arkstone began as a result of one small piece of information. What the AFP and its domestic and international law enforcement partners uncovered in the weeks and months that followed was truly some of the worst offending we have ever seen. The criminal behaviour of these two men is perhaps the most disturbing representation of what child sex offenders are capable of, being the systemic sexual abuse of children over many years, across geographical locations and by people who have been entrusted with so much responsibility. Some of those arrested during Operation Arkstone were meant to keep our children safe. Instead, they used their position to commit some of the most evil crimes imaginable.

Two NSW men jailed for child abuse offences

Two men, one of whom is a former childcare worker, have been sentenced to a combined 63 years’ jail for a series of child abuse offences, according to a NSW police media release.

The NSW men, 30 and 25 years old, pleaded guilty in 2022 to a combined 354 child abuse offences, involving 30 child victims. They were sentenced today at Downing Centre district court.

The 30-year-old man was convicted of 248 offences, including 30 offences of sexual intercourse with a child under 10 years of age, and was sentenced to 37 years with a non-parole period of 26 years.

The 25-year-old man was convicted of 106 offences, including 31 offences of sexual intercourse with a child under 10 years of age. He was sentenced to 26 years, with a non-parole period of 16 years and nine months.

The pair were arrested in the AFP-led Operation Arkstone , which launched in 2020 after a tip-off from the United States’ National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children .

The investigation “dismantled a domestic online network of child sex offenders abusing and exploiting children, including the recording of the horrific crimes to share with others,” the media release said.

As a result, 25 people across Australia were charged with 1,350 offences, and at least 56 child victims were identified and removed from harm.

More to come.

‘Vibrancy’ reforms on the table for later dining hours in NSW

Fresh “vibrancy guidelines” will be introduced in NSW to make it easier for restaurants and bars that are a reasonable distance from homes to trade later into the night, AAP reports.

The changes come after a handful of residents successfully blocked a restaurant at Sydney’s exclusive Palm Beach from opening in the evening, despite their homes being separated from the venue by a golf course.

Northern Beaches council in March rejected an application from a newly opened restaurant, The Joey, to open past 4pm after residents living more than 500 metres away complained about potential noise from the licensed premises.

“It really has left people scratching their heads,” the state’s night-time economy minister, John Graham, told ABC Radio.

They’re having to turn people away.

A planned change in legislation, which has been approved by cabinet but is yet to be introduced to state parliament, will apply to bars and restaurants on land 500m or more away from a residential property.

Councils will have to consider a set of “vibrancy guidelines” when assessing certain applications to extend operating hours in those cases.

The guidelines will be developed alongside the state’s 24-hour economy commissioner, Michael Rodrigues , after consultation with councils, stakeholders and the wider community.

These guidelines will really spell out some of the factors that councils should take into account to look after neighbours, but also make sure they’ve got vibrant places.

Dreyfus grilled on ministerial delegate’s decision to remove ankle bracelet of community detainee

Paul Karp

The attorney general, Mark Dreyfus , was earlier today grilled on the controversial decision of a delegate of immigration minister, Andrew Giles , to remove the ankle bracelet from Majid Jamshidi Doukoshkan , on the advice of the community protection board.

Doukoshkan was arrested in April along with two other men over the alleged assault of Ninette Simons and her husband, Philip , 76, and for allegedly stealing $200,000 worth of jewellery. Dreyfus told ABC RN:

This matter is before the courts … Our thoughts go to the victim of what is obviously a distressing and terrible attack. But I’m not going to comment on a matter where someone has been charged, I’m not going to go to the detail, and that’s where it sits.

Dreyfus said the purpose of the board is “so that independent expertise can be brought to bear on the sometimes difficult decisions of what are appropriate conditions on someone who is in the community”.

Attorney-general Mark Dreyfus.

Asked if the board is independent, after Clare O’Neil contradicted the prime minister on that point , Dreyfus replied:

I’m not sure exactly why this distinction matters. I’m trying to describe the function of this community protection board which is to assist in making the difficult decisions about what conditions should be placed on someone who is in the community. It’s the same as the kinds of decisions that are made by parole boards at the state level when deciding on conditions to be placed on someone who has been released from detention.

Dreyfus refused to clarify who is responsible for decisions to take ankle bracelets off, replying: “The legislation speaks for itself and anyone can go and read the legislation can see the way in which this community protection board operates.” The answer is the minister or the minister’s delegate (in the case of Doukoshkan).

Yarra Valley grammar spreadsheet reported to Victorian police

Victorian police have confirmed they have received a report in relation to the Yarra Valley Grammar spreadsheet incident.

Police said in a statement that they would assess the incident to “determine if it’s a matter for police”.

The recent matter involving students from Yarra Valley Grammar has been reported to police. Investigators will assess the information to determine if it’s a matter for police.

Two students expelled from Yarra Valley grammar for involvement in spreadsheet

Two students from Yarra Valley grammar school have been expelled over a spreadsheet compiled by a group of boys ranking their female classmates, which the Victorian premier, Jacinta Allan , labelled as “disgraceful” and “disgusting”.

The spreadsheet reportedly ranked girls from top to bottom as “wifeys”, “cuties”, “mid”, “object”, “get out” and lastly “unrapable”.

In a letter, the principal, Mark Merry , said an investigation into the matter has been “complex and time consuming” and could not be rushed.

As a result of these investigations, yesterday I formed the view that the position of two students at Yarra has become untenable and as a consequence they will not be returning to the School . Others, who have played a lesser role in this matter have been subject to further disciplinary action.

Merry said the school is “characterised by respectful relationships most of the time” but “clearly … more work needs to be done” to ensure everyone feels “valued and respected here at school”.

Whilst we conduct regular sessions on respectful relationships and model care and respect in all that we do; this has not been enough. We will be reviewing all of our programmes to ensure that the dignity of all is respected. This needs to be a learning moment for all of us.

The principal said it would be “missing the point” to label the incident as a “Yarra problem” alone, because “sexism and misogyny are ever present in our society and it is the responsibility of all of us … to stand up and make it clear that it is not acceptable anywhere”.

A glimpse at the case for a rate rise by the Reserve Bank today – or soon

Of those calling for one or more interest rate rises by the RBA, only one – Capital Markets – has been bold enough to nominate today for the cycle of pain (for borrowers) to resume.

Abhijit Surya , a Capital Markets economist, told me that “since the [RBA board] meeting in mid-March, there have been a slew of upside surprises in the data, and we just think it will be too much for the bank to just look past all of that”.

At the end of the day, if its job is to bring inflation down – and if it’s said that that’s its main priority – there’s still a good case for it to hike rather than just signal it has a ‘hawkish bias’.

Capital reckons the RBA will able to start cutting rates by the first quarter of 2025 – if it acts now.

Central to the “rate hike callers” is the ongoing strength of the labour market. The labour market can be a bit volatile but it’s hard to look past the 100,000-plus full-time jobs created in the first three months of 2024 alone. Slightly annoyingly for all, we only get the March quarter wage price index figures from the ABS on 15 May – a day after the federal budget – to know if the 4.2% annual pace for 2023 is rising or falling.

Data out yesterday from the ANZ and Indeed , meanwhile, showed the jobs market continues to be pretty buoyant. Ads picked up modestly and remain well above pre-Covid levels.

Another data point that dropped yesterday pointed to the strength of the labour market, with ads up 2.8% in April. They remain well above pre-Covid levels, perhaps a little higher than the RBA board would like to see. (Via ANZ, Indeed.) pic.twitter.com/y0V3EX3Kvk — @[email protected] (@p_hannam) May 6, 2024

That’s something else for the RBA board to mull over ahead of its 2.30pm AEST decision today. Don’t let your eyes stray from this blog, but return by then if you have to.

A glimpse at the case against a rate rise by the Reserve Bank today

That March inflation result revved up the punditry (although it was the first upside CPI surprise in six months, as we noted here ).

In the “don’t panic case” are economists such as Stephen Koukoulas, a former economic adviser to Labor PM Julia Gillard . “The economy is still weak and weakening,” he told me this week, pointing to March retail sales that are growing at a record-slow pace (outside the Covid pandemic).

He’s still confident that there will be “more likely than not a couple of rate cuts” this year, and no rate rise before that.

Koukoulas notes the RBA’s February forecasts (we get the updated predictions today) had public demand slowing from 4% growth in 2023 to an annual pace of 2.2% by June and 1.1% by December. (Guess we’ll see what the RBA thinks of next week’s federal budget and a possible spending spree in Queensland ahead of an October election that Labor seems on track to lose.)

Meanwhile, the ANZ/Roy Morgan ’s weekly survey finds consumer sentiment still very weak. More noteworthy, perhaps, is the drop in inflation expectations – just what the RBA wants to see. Perhaps all this self-flagellation over a possible rate rise will do the job without a hike.

With the RBA Board to decide today whether or not to leave its cash rate unchanged at 4.35%, it's interesting (sts) to see inflation expectations fell 0.3pp to 5% in the latest weekly survey by @ANZ_Research and @RoyMorganAus ... pic.twitter.com/3c44n5hJO9 — @[email protected] (@p_hannam) May 6, 2024

Shadow treasurer labels $3bn Hecs and Help debt wipe ‘Band-Aid on bullet wound’

Shadow treasurer Angus Taylor says the government’s move to wipe $3bn from Hecs and Help debts through indexation changes is a “Band-Aid” solution.

Speaking to 2CC Breakfast radio, Taylor argued there was no benefit for future students under the changes and by wiping the debt, the government is admitting “prices have gone up faster than wages”.

The truth of the matter is that the purchasing power of people’s pay packets, the purchasing power in their bank accounts, has gone down under this government. And that has caused enormous pain, not just to students, but to everyone. To pensioners, to hardworking families with a mortgage, and the result of that is that Australians are just struggling to make ends meet. You can’t put a Band-Aid on this bullet wound. You’ve got to go to the source of the problem and deal with it. And that means a government that lives within its means, that makes sure we’ve got those competitive, productive workplaces that can drive real wages upwards, that can deliver prosperity – restore the prosperity that has been lost since Labor has come to power. But there’s absolutely no sign this government is going down that path.

Shadow treasurer Angus Taylor.
