Breathtaking scenery | Active adventure

Swellendam, western cape: a green start to the garden route.

i i th a beautiful mountain backdrop and the languid Breede River on its doorstep, Swellendam is a nature and adventure lover ’ s paradise – not to mention what it has to offer foodie s and those fascinated by the quirks of history .

Swellendam was established in 1745 , making it the third- oldest town in South Africa after Cape Town and Stellenbosch , so it has lots to offer those interested in the past. But don’t imagine that history is all this pretty spot has to offer .

Built among the foothills of the Langeberg M ountains, Swellendam has one of the most beautiful settings in the country,  and Western Cape province’ s largest navigable river, the Breede (meaning ‘ broad ’ ), flow s close by.

Its location at the start of the Garden Route and close to the Tradouw Pass, which leads to the famous R62 road and the Little Karoo, makes Swellendam an ideal springboard for tourists wishing to explore this part of the country.

swellendam tourist information centre

I I n addition, there are several nature reserves nearby , including the Bontebok National Park. This is the smallest national park in South Africa, established originally as a safe haven for Bontebok, a rare antelope that once numbered only 17 individual animals.

Provincial nature reserves include Marloth , adjacent to the town, the birder's paradise of Grootvadersbosch for its indigenous forest, and the spectacular De Hoop Nature Reserve on the coast, which offers great whale viewing in spring (August/September) and has an iconic, multi-day hiking trail called the Whale Trail.

With all this natural beauty around, no wonder Swellendam is a drawcard for outdoor enthusiasts, from mountain bikers and hikers to horse riders and river rafters.

The town also lies at the centre of a healthy agricultural industry producing a cornucopia of fresh goods, including berries that are grown in the nearby Hermitage Valley, honey from the mountain fynbos, and fresh milk from the herds of jersey cows that graze on the well-watered pastures in the area.

There ’ s a vibrant food culture here too, with more restaurants than one would ordinarily find in a town of this size, offering everything from  boerekos    (traditional farmers ’ food) to coffee shops serving delectable cakes , to fine-dining experiences.

Today the town brands itself the   ‘ Republic of Swellendam ’ , with good reason. This harks back to the day on 17 June 1795 when the local populace expelled the Dutch East India Company magistrate and declared themselves a republic. Their status as a ‘ free republic ’ came to an end three months later when they agreed to accept British rule, but that fierce sense of independence lives on.

The modern-day residents made a tongue-in-cheek declaration of independence on 18 June 2011 to celebrate Swellendam as a ‘ Republic of love, community, unity, art, music, good food and beauty ’ .

With so much on offer, who would not wish to linger a little bit longer here?

Visitor information centre [ edit ]

There is no longer a Tourism Information office - a town directory www.swellendam.com is used by most people to find their way around, to find places to eat and sleep and to catch up on local news, jobs, and events.

Get in [ edit ]

By car [ edit ].

  • From Cape Town : It takes about 2.5-3 hours on the N2 to reach Swellendam by car from Cape Town (240 km).

Take the N2 highway towards Cape Town International Airport and carry on straight towards Somerset West. Follow the N2 past the town and all the way up and over Sir Lowry’s Pass. Once you are over the pass, carry on straight on the N2 past the towns of Grabouw/Elgin and Bot River.

Continue along the highway past Caledon and Riviersonderend until you come into the town which is well signposted. Depending on where you are staying you can access the town through either the first or second highway off-ramp. The second highway off-ramp will take you straight to many of the main tourist attractions.

An alternative route on the N1 through the Huguenot Tunnel, then the R60, through Worcester and Robertson takes the same time and is more scenic.

  • From George : Take the N2 highway towards Mossel Bay and follow this highway all the way along the N2 until you reach Swellendam. The journey will take you all the way along the coast and then inland, passing through Riversdale and Heidelberg.

By bus [ edit ]

The major companies serve Swellendam on their run from Cape Town to the Garden route but the service isn't very extensive. Swellendam is also served by the Baz Bus on its way from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth.

By air or train [ edit ]

There is a small airport, Swellengrebel Airfield, used for pilot training and private planes. There is a railway - but the station no longer operates. A hospital train visits the town annually and private companies run tourism trips by steam engine.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

The town is small so best viewed while walking through the oak lined streets. There is no public transport in the town except for the minibuses. The minibus stand is in Tritchard Street behind the main shopping mall.

  • The Drostdy: the former magistrate's seat was built in 1747 and now houses a museum. It is a fine example of Cape-Dutch architecture.
  • Bontebok National Park : A few kilometres out of town, this park offers nice scenery. Worth a day of hiking and a viewing of the flora and fauna. Bontebok National Park is where the rare bontebok was protected when it was close to extinction. The population has increased from 17 individuals in 1931 to a sustainable number today.
  • De Hoop Nature Reserve : Beautiful little reserve, perfect for spotting whales!
  • Marloth Nature Reserve: On the southern slopes of the Langeberg Mountains offers an abundance of wild flowers and fynbos, as well as some hiking trails.

Do [ edit ]

  • Visit the museum and then go to Bontebok National Park. For those with more time hiking in the Marloth nature reserve is worth a thought.
  • Twaalfuurkop Peak is about 12.4km, taking an estimated time 6 hours. Ascends to the Twaalfuurkop peak (1,450m) with great views of the Langeberg Mountain range, the Rûensveld and the Indian Ocean.
  • Duiwelsbos Waterfall. A short 2km hike, taking an estimated 2 hours, it is shaded for the latter portion, and offers a small swimming spot at the end.
  • Koloniesbos: 2km, an estimated 70m. It starts from the same place as the Duiwelsbos route, and it's possible to do both. A pleasant, mostly shaded route. It is possible to add on a few scenic but unshaded kilometres to both routes by starting at the Marloth Office, rather than the parking lot.
  • Plaat Loop. 12km, an estimated 3 hours. Includes a number of streams to swim
  • Appelsbos Loop. 21km, an estimated 5 hours

Two Feathers Horse Trails Canter your way through the beautiful Langeberg Mountain range. Whether you’re a modern-day cowboy or a city slicker, Two Feathers Horse Trails cater for all levels of riders. For accomplished riders, full day rides are available with riverside forest picnics . The Drostdy Museum The Drostdy Museum was built in 1747 to serve as a residence and headquarters for the Landdrost (magistrate), and it was regarded as the most important building of its time. The museum is spread out between several historic buildings, including the Old Gaol the Ambagswerf, Mayville and Zanddrift. These days the museum, which has maintained its original façade from 1844, houses a fine collection of late 18th and early 19th century furniture. The collection of buildings is of great architectural value, and the surrounding traditional Cape gardens add a lovely aesthetic. Top tip: Make sure to visit the Ambagswerf, where the tools and equipment used by the artisans of the past are exhibited. Opening times: Monday - Friday 07:45am – 1pm, 1:30pm – 4:15pm. 18 Swellengrebel Street | Swellendam | +27(0) 28 514 1138

The Old Gaol The gaol was built shortly after the Drostdy, and served as a jail for local offenders. Judicial procedures in those days were very primitive, and slaves were frequently tortured. Today the building serves as a coffee shop and art gallery, where you can enjoy fresh ‘moer’ coffee, roosterkoek and traditional breads. Trivia: Torture methods included whipping, branding and even loss of ears. 26 Swellengrebel Street| Swellendam| +27 (0)83 286 4136

General Information

Swellendam connects the Overberg with the Garden Route and is an attractive town with the Koornlands River running through it.  Beautifully historic sitting at the base of the Langeberg mountains near to the R62 ’s Tradouw Pass, Swellendam is in the perfect location from where to explore the surrounding areas.

As South Africa ’s third oldest town, Swellendam is steeped in history with its historic buildings such as the Drostdy and the majestic Moederkerk, both of which are well-known landmarks in the town.

The restaurants, coffee shops and farm stalls all offer delicious meals and goodies for travelers, while the museum provides fascinating information on the area.  The Hermitage Valley is the largest young berry producer in South Africa , and tourists are able to visit some of the farms and taste the locally produced liqueur and berry products.

Surrounded by nature reserves hiking is a popular past-time - bring your binoculars as the birdlife is amazing!  There is a kaleidoscope of flora and fauna providing great photographic opportunities.  The three reserves that are near Swellendam are; the Bontebok National Park, Marloth Nature Reserve and the expansive De Hoop Nature Reserve.

If you in the mood for something different, there is a famous fairy sanctuary in town.  Complete with all things magical - from fairies and mermaids, to pixies and gnomes, the gardens are a delight for all ages and well-worth the visit.

Swellendam is a peaceful town even in the busy seasons.  Whether you are here for the day, the weekend or longer, Swellendam will provide you with an unforgettable experience …

Outdoor adventures and activities include backpacking in the mountains, tour the wine route of the Breede River Valley, Montague and the Klein Karoo .

A picturesque 9 hole golf course with magnificent views of the Langeberg Mountains can be found just outside the town.

Wine Valley Safari offers safe, reliable, convenient and extremely fun transport in an open-air safari vehicle, allowing you to fully breathe in and discover the Robertson Wine Valley in all its glory! Choose from self-guided hop-on hop-off routes to pre-packaged wine tasting tours. Let us be your personal chauffeur, while you relax and enjoy a memorable excursion in a socially-buzzed atmosphere.

Other activities in the area include: canoeing, water-skiing and the “watersnake”on the Buffeljachts Dam.  The area is a nature lover's dream with an abundance of wild flowers and Fynbos to be seen. The 250ha indigenous forest at Grootvadersbosch is the most noteworthy in the South Western Cape. Woods like these are a rare find in the Cape province, so far West of the Knysna forests.

Swellendam offers visitors a variety of accommodation  options to suit every taste and budget, including luxury guest houses, Bed and Breakfast establishments, chalets, caravan and camping facilities as well as self-catering cottages.

Swellendam has grown over the last few years offering locals and visitors all the essentials one would need.  The restaurants are a culinary delight!  View our selection of advertising businesses or add your own free business listing .

Directions from Garden Route

Take the N2 highway towards Mossel Bay and follow this highway all the way along the N2 until you reach Swellendam. The journey will take you all the way along the coast and then inland, passing through Riversdale and Heidelberg. Since Swellendam is located along the same stretch of highway, it is not difficult to find as long as you stick to the same road and follow the signs towards Cape Town. Once you reach Swellendam you should then take the appropriate turnoff to your accommodation or desired destination in the area.

Swellendam Municipality

To escape the city life, visit swellendam, for everything else there’s swellenmark shopping mall.

by Mathew Philips | Mar 16, 2022 | Tourism Latest Notices , Tourism Notices | 0 comments

Nothing rejuvenates a city slicker quite like going on holiday to a small town, where life is simple and the air is fresh. This is why Swellendam is the perfect getaway destination.

But when you’re there, it’s comforting to know you can get your shopping done as you would back home. The SwellenMark Shopping Mall, on Voortrek Road, makes that possible.

SwellenMark Shopping Mall: Clothing, groceries, and pets

Like most shopping malls, SwellenMark tries to have every service you need under one roof. These include big-name clothing stores like Foschini, Mr. Price, and Exact. Additionally, if you need to stock up on over-the-counter meds, there’s a Clicks in the building. Furthermore, for snacks and treats, you can visit the Montagu Dried Fruit and Nuts store. Checkers is in the mall too, so your grocery shopping is a done deal. Also, if you brought a pet and are staying at the Lantern Self Catering Cottages , there’s an Absolute Pets for all your fur baby’s needs.

SwellenMark Shopping Mall: Lunch is sorted

Shopping is a hungry business. Although you’re not shopping all day for a pantry full of supplies, you can still sit down for a bit to eat. Your options aren’t many, but they most certainly are diverse. There is a KFC if fried chicken is what you’re craving. Alternatively, there is a Wimpy if the kids insist on burgers. On the other hand, if the kids want burgers and you want fish and chips, then right next door to KFC is Fish & Chips Basket. Don’t let the name fool you though. While calamari, snoek, and chips are available, there’s also has a selection of burgers… with beef, chicken, or seafood options.

Operating hours

Generally, the mall operates from 9 am to 5:30 pm Monday to Friday. On Saturday it opens and closes earlier, running from 8 am to 2 pm. Sundays and public holidays it’s open from 9 am to 1 pm. Checkers is the only store that operates at different times. Their Monday to Thursday times are 8 am to 7 pm. Fridays are 8 am to 8 pm, while Sundays and public holidays are 9 am to 3 pm.
