Places To Visit Near Kochi Airport

Kochi is often referred to as the 'Queen of the Arabian Sea'. Kochi was chosen as the main seat of the Portuguese, Dutch and later on, the British occupied it. Therefore, it still displays multi-culture and is a very vibrant city. When you are in Kochi, you cannot afford to miss seafood if you love the taste of it. The best of prawns, kingfish, and crabs can be savored here along with many local specialties like Malabar Prawn Curry, Dhe Puttu, Chuttuli Meen, etc. If you are traveling to the city by flight and have some time in hand, you can easily visit some places around the airport, some of which are detailed here. 

Kalady is in Angamaly, a village in Aluva, roughly about 35 kilometers from the airport. It is the birthplace of Advaitha philosopher Sri Adi Shankaracharya and has a Sarada temple with a superb gallery that can be seen at all times. You can also visit the Sankara Tower, which is a spiritual place with ten floors in it. There are innumerable murals and wall paintings in the tower, which serves as a museum to depict the life and times of the Shankaracharya.

This beautiful place on the banks of the Periyar River is located at a distance of 20 kilometers from the airport. It has a captive elephant training college in which wild elephants are brought for being domesticated. There is also a cradle for baby elephants to be nurtured over here. You can also enjoy an elephant safari at this place. Just four kilometers from this place is Poru which is a pristine riverbank known for its scenic locale. One can enjoy a mesmerizing swim in the river at Poru.

It is near to Kodanad and at roughly the same distance from the Cochin airport. If you are a practicing Christian, the place can hold a deep meaning as it is a renowned Christian pilgrimage place due to the famous church of St. Thomas. 21. St Mary's Forane Church - Kuravilangad

At a distance of 20 Kms from Kottayam, St.Mary's Forane Church (also known as Martha Mariam Church) is located in Kuravilangad, on the way to Muvattupuzha. Constructed in the year of 105 AD, this Church belongs to the diocese of Palai. It is believed that Mother Mary appeared to a few children in this area and asked them to build a church at the place from where a miraculous spring emerged, which exists even today. The church was built and a statue of the Virgin Mary carved from granite is installed here. A 48 feet single block granite cross is located in front of the church, which was erected around 1597. The sanctum of Lord Jambukeshwara has an underground water stream and one can see water coming out of that stream all the time. The presiding goddess is Devi Akilandeswari Amman. According to legend, Parvathi performed penance in the form of Akilandeswari in the Jambu forest. She made the lingam out of the water of river Kaveri, installed it under the Venn Naaval tree evolved out of Saint Jambu and commenced her worship. Lord Siva at last gave darshan to Devi Akhilandeswari and taught her Siva Gnana. According to Sthala Purana, there were two Siva Ganas by name Malyavan and Pushpadanta. They always quarrel with each other and fight for one thing or other. On top of all in one fight Malyavan cursed Pushpadanta to become an elephant and the latter cursed the former to become a spider. Air India Express strike: 1200 passengers return home from Karipur due to flight disruptions

Kozhikode: As Air India Express continues to cancel more flights from the Kozhikode International Airport, around 1200 passengers, including pilgrims, had to abandon their plans. This morning, only the flights to Kuwait and Dubai were confirmed. Meanwhile, three other flights were cancelled. Air India Express authorities informed us that five flights have been cancelled from Karipur today. While new reports on Air India planning to conduct services in Air India Express routes are coming in, there is no clarity yet on flights from Karipur.

Two flights that were scheduled to depart from Karipur were cancelled on Tuesday night. Besides, around 20 services that were supposed to arrive here were affected. Those who were getting ready for the flight after receiving the boarding pass as well as the passengers who came to the airport without knowing that their flights had been cancelled were left in the lurch. The abrupt cancellation of the flights had put the pilgrims for Umrah and those who were supposed to report for work within the stipulated time on the spot. Besides the flights to Dammam and Dubai that were cancelled on Tuesday night, the services to Ras Al Khaima, Dubai, Jeddah, Kuwait, Doha and Bahrain between 8 am and 10 am, as well as the flight to Muscat at 11.10 pm were cancelled on May 8. The return trips of these flights too have been affected by the cancellations.

Pilgrims disappointed Most passengers who were supposed to fly in the Jeddah flight at 8.50 am on May 8 were pilgrims to Mecca. The pilgrims complained that they were informed about the cancellation only after they had reached the airport early in the morning. Kasargod native Subair Darimi who was part of the 40-member Umrah pilgrimage group said that he had faced difficulties as arrangements had already been made for their accommodation and return trip. Pilgrims from various districts had reached the airport to be part of the group. Subair said that the organisers had to reschedule their journey in Indigo and Spice Jet in the next three days. The Umrah agency representatives too said that the flight cancellations had caused them severe financial losses.
