Circle island tour

Duration: 2h30 Total : $100

Circle island tour

From the pier, your around-the-island drive will take you past several of the island's villages. You will visit a marae (sacred Polynesian temple grounds) site. Pass through plantations of various crops grown here on Aitutaki. Learn about the island's myths and legends while taking in its beautiful scenery.

Aitutaki has a unique geographical make-up – the island is a volcanic atoll with the typical volcanic peaks in the center of the island with the encircling coral reef ringed by the offshore islands ( motus ) and the lagoon in the center. The Circle Island Tour is a great way to see the island and meet the locals.

Visit the inland villages of Tautu Vaipae and Vaipeka , drive along the coast and see the remnants of the Copra Production Facility, and see how the people of this tiny idyllic island live. There will be plenty of opportunities to meet the locals and take photographs along the way.

Finally, you will get back to the pier.

Relaxing time at the Lagoonarium

Duration: 4h00 Total : $99

Relaxing time at the Lagoonarium

Depart the pier in Vaitape (or Anau) aboard an outrigger canoe for a scenic ride in the Bora Bora lagoon (weather permitting). You will then continue to the Lagoonarium , with its white sandy beach and open-air aquarium. From the beach you will have a magnificent view of the island of Bora Bora. Upon arrival, enjoy an opportunity to swim in separate enclosed areas. During your visit, you will also participate in up-close encounters with marine life , including sharks, rays, jack fish, turtles, parrot fish, and more. Snorkeling begins from the beach in shallow water ranging in depth from 3-10 feet and is suitable for beginners and experienced snorkelers. Your local guides will show you how to carefully approach the marine life, will present you the motu and you will invite to participate in weaving coconut palm, sheathing coconut and pareo demonstrations.

After your visit, you will be served fresh fruit and spend some time relaxing on the beach before heading back to the pier.

Because the outrigger canoes are not always uncovered, the ride can be extremely sunny or wet from spray or rain. At times transfer is by car and boat. Guests exiting the canoe must use the ladder on the south side and walk in shallow water back to the beach. A small souvenir shop is available on the island, and all purchases are cash only; U.S. dollars or Pacific Francs are accepted here. Changing facilities, a sitting area and basic rest room are also available. Wear reef shoes and a swimsuit under a cover-up, and bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a towel from the ship. This tour is recommended for guests in good physical condition. Despite the fact the marine life is widely represented, it is not guaranteed to spot an animal presence when going out. If this is the case, the excursion will not be reimbursed.

Tahiti Shore Excursions: Blissful Beaches & Cultural Wonders

While your cruise ship is docked in Papeete, there are a number of Tahiti shore excursions in which you can partake.

For history and culture, head away from Papeete to the east side of the island. You’ll visit Venus Point, which is the site where European explorers originally came ashore to discover what the island offered. Venus Point is also next to a part of the coastal sea where you can often see locals racing their outrigger boats, which gives you a glimpse into the culture of Tahiti and popular activities to do. Also on the east side of the island is the house of American writer, James Norman Hall, whose Tahiti home showcases lovely island architecture.

To explore the flora of Tahiti, stick to the west side. During one of our west coast shore excursions you can visit the Vaipahi Gardens to see exotic flowers and trees and explore the underwater world of Maraa Grotto. Another west coast site not to miss is Arahurahu Marae, a fully restored temple nestled within the tropical forest of Tahiti.

The west coast is also home to Te Ruta Lagoon, a marvelous stretch of water that will feel like you’re swimming in a heated pool full of fish, coral, and possibly even dolphins.

Visiting a beach is one of the top things to do in Tahiti from a cruise ship and it’s a blissful way to spend the day in port. Thanks to remarkably clear water shimmering in shades of turquoise bordered by white sand, you can easily relax andclear your mind of any stress or worry from back home.

An even better way to totally escape into paradise while on your cruise to Papeete, Tahiti is to combine beach lounging with time in the ocean snorkeling. There are Tahiti shore excursions that will take you to a beach on the island that is in close proximity to a great snorkeling spot and provide you with all the snorkeling gear you need for a laid back yet adventurous day.

Whether you lean toward cruise tours that are more water-based or ones that take you to the top sites upon the island’s land, you’ll find yourself in awe of Tahiti’s tropical beauty.

My 8 Favorite Experiences On Board A Windstar Cruise In Tahiti And The Tuamotu Islands

  • Types of Travel

I always dreamt of being in Tahiti and sailing around the remote French Polynesian islands, and in May I turned my dreams into lifelong memories on a small sailing yacht with Windstar Cruises. It was love at first sight! I had goosebumps as I boarded the sparkling white 148-passenger  Wind Spirit  in Papeete, Tahiti, for an 11-day sailing adventure in Tahiti and the Tuamotu Islands.

While I could easily have just stayed on the ship for the entire cruise, I also wanted to explore the islands, motus and reefs famous for their clear turquoise waters, rich underwater reef life, and some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in the world. I was able to find the perfect balance of incredible on-ship experiences and jaw-dropping off-ship experiences available at a reasonable price with Windstar.

Everything about my first Windstar cruise was dreamy, from my comfortable cabin and beautiful open spaces on-board, to the on-ship enrichment opportunities plus delicious food and beverages. These are my eight favorite experiences on Wind Spirit in Tahiti and the Tuamotu Islands:

sail away cruise to the Tuamotu Islands

1. Epic Sail Aways And Sun-Downers

Every time we sailed away from a port we gathered on the outside decks in flowy linen and gauze clothing with sun-downers in hand, my favorite being an Aperol Spritz. As the sun began to set, we watched in awe as the sky began to burst with ever-changing colors. Music would start to play and all eyes were focussed on the giant masts as the tall white sails began to unfurl one at a time. This was my first time witnessing epic romantic sail aways on a true sailing yacht, and I know it will not be my last.

2. Snorkeling On Fakarava, The Island of Dreams

Windstar offered many snorkeling excursions, but the one in Fakarava, the so-called Island of Dreams in the Tuamotu Islands, stood out from the rest.

Fakarava’s lagoon is classified by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve . From a small dive boat, we entered the clear warm water with our fins and masks. (All snorkeling equipment is provided free of charge by Windstar for use throughout the cruise). While the depth of the water and current varied, we nonetheless had spectacular views of the magnificent corals, colorful tropical fish, and even black tipped reef sharks.

The Society Islands and Tuamotu Islands are arguably the best places in the world to snorkel, so if you too love snorkeling, you can take advantage of all the snorkel excursions in Rangiroa, Taha’a, and Bora Bora in addition to Fakarava.

Sea days are ideal for splurging on spa treatments to relax and rejuvenate. Since the spa was quite small with one hair dresser, one masseuse, and one aesthetician, I booked a deep tissue massage, a BIOTEC Anti-aging Firm-a-lift facial, and a hair appointment for color and a blow dry immediately upon embarkation.

Unlike spas on some larger ships with saunas, steam rooms, elaborate changing rooms, treatment pools, and lounge areas pre and post treatments, the Wind Spirit Spa has just three treatment rooms and a small reception area; however, the massage, facial, and salon services were as good as or better than what I’ve experienced on some of the more elaborate ship spas. I flew directly to a family event in New York City following the cruise and thanks to the spa team, I looked like a million bucks even after traveling for 18 hours!

The Mamas and Papas traditional dances

4. The Mamas And Papas Group On The Pool Deck

While we were anchored in Raiatea, the Sacred Island, Windstar’s on-board enrichment program included an opportunity to meet the Mamas and Papas (not the American folk-rock band!), who came aboard and immersed us in Polynesian culture.

We were taught traditional dances, how to create flower crowns and leis, and how men and women wear the traditional pareo wraps. Dressed in our new Polynesian attire, the dance floor became crowded and festive. Having been in Tahiti for a few weeks before the cruise, I came to love the warmth and kindness of the Tahitian people. It was a treat to spend a few hours with these men and women as we learned about their culture and traditions.

Centerpiece at the Deck Party Under The Stars

5. Glorious Food And Restaurant Choices

I adored having the freedom to dine when, where, and with whomever I preferred, indoors or alfresco on the Wind Spirit . Reservations are required only at the romantic and intimate Candles Restaurant, which is outdoors on the Bridge Deck with starched white tablecloths and a steakhouse-style menu. I even dressed up a little for Candles, making dining under the stars even more special!

Windstar is the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation. I tried many extraordinary chef-inspired dishes at the Amphora Restaurant and even ordered room service from the same menu one night when I chose to enjoy dinner alone in my cabin. Hands-down this was the best room service I have ever experienced on a ship!

For breakfast and lunch, the bright Veranda Restaurant offered panoramic views while we sailed and had a buffet with many varieties of yogurt, fruit, salad, bread and dessert. Meals could also be ordered from the menu including eggs benedict, hamburgers, and daily specials. The staff from day-one knew my name and greeted me personally without hesitating. With 118 guests on board for our sailing, I was so impressed that the staff were able to greet us by our names, not just at mealtime, but all the time as we moved around the ship. It made me wonder how they learn our names so quickly.

Pro Tip: There is so much more to Windstar’s extraordinary food-centric attention. I found three exceptional experiences, unique to Windstar, that revolved around private barbecue parties on the Wind Spirit and on secluded islands and motus for Windstar-guests-only. All were weather-dependent and involved an enormous amount of effort by the staff. More on these below.

paella preparation for deck party under the stars

6. Deck Barbecue Under The Stars

The Galley team brought their finest cooking talents out to the pool deck where large barbecues were set up to prepare everything from paella to pork and beef. In the late afternoon long tables with salads, breads, vegetables, and other meal accompaniments were set up, and the deck was outfitted with dozens of perfectly set tables and chairs, enough for all 118 guests to enjoy dinner and the show that followed. Staff spontaneously burst into singing and finding strategic positions to lead guests in Line Dancing. Under clear skies with bright stars overhead, the party carried on for hours. We applauded the Windstar team’s talent, creativity, effort, and spirit of hospitality and fun.

Windstar experience was in Motu Mahaea on Taha’a

7. Windstar Private Island Experience

Another exceptional Windstar experience was in Motu Mahaea on Taha’a, known as The Vanilla Island. My day started with a short tour of a vanilla plantation followed by an exhilarating snorkel adventure with black tip sharks and rays circling around us. Our dive boat then took us to Windstar’s private island surrounded by white sand beaches and corals for the complimentary Private Island experience.

Wearing only bathing suits and rashguard shirts, we fit right in with the other guests who were wearing beach gear. Staff had already set up a full bar with all sorts of tropical drinks, and a full lunch buffet, complete with a giant seafood paella pan, meat skewers, and an assortment of hot and cold salads and side dishes. I lounged comfortably on the beach after the delicious lunch and went into the shallow water to snorkel a little more.

No doubt transferring all of the food, drinks, towels, dishes and glasses, and the cooking and serving equipment to the private island was an enormous effort, yet the entire Windstar team was in great spirits throughout the day and into the early evening when we all returned to the ship. We all agreed that this was one of our best days on the cruise.

8. Bora Bora Destination Discovery Event

The third in a trio of outstanding experiences on this Windstar cruise in Tahiti was the Bora Bora Destination Discovery Event. Bora Bora was the most beautiful of the Society Islands. It is surrounded by tiny reef islets formed by broken coral and sand, called motu , in small pristine secluded areas.

Windstar took guests by catamaran to the motu where Windstar’s executive chef arranged an extraordinary private feast on the beach. Traditional Polynesian fire dancers dressed in loin cloths performed after dinner to the delight of all the guests. I looked forward to this event; however, I had to fly home from Bora Bora for a family event just hours before the festivities began. I did hear from other guests by email about how they enjoyed the feast and fire dancing. This experience is also completely complimentary to Windstar guests!

Windstar Tahiti Pro Tips

There is a treasure box of intimate and immersive shore excursions; however, if your heart is set on particular excursions offering limited space, I recommend booking them early. You can change your mind and make adjustments on the ship daily.

Commencing in February 2024, the 312-passenger Star Breeze takes over as Windstar’s year-round Tahiti ship doing the Dreams of Tahiti seven-night cruise offering the same experiences I so enjoyed.

Windstar will also sail a new exciting 14-day itinerary, Tahitian Treasures & Magnificent Marquesas , in 2024 and 2025 calling on the Tuamotu Islands of Fakarava and Rangiroa en route to and from the Marquesas, ending with the Society Islands of Tahaa, Bora Bora (an overnight), Moorea, and Papeete.

I have highlighted only my top eight experiences on the Windstar Tahiti and Tuamotu Islands cruise; however, I could easily have written about so many more magical moments and experiences while on board. If you dream of Tahiti as I did, this is a wonderful way to turn those dreams into memories.

Tahiti Cruises

Shore Excursions

Shore excursions offer an exciting way to experience each island on your itinerary. Here is an overview of the most popular excursions.

Note: Not all cruise lines offer all excursions listed.

Off-Road Safaris On these excursions you travel in a four-wheel drive vehicle around an island. In Moorea, you might drive inside the volcanic crater that created the island, visit a huge pineapple plantation, stop at the island's Agricultural School to sample homemade jam, or explore a marae (open-air temple) before ascending to the top of the mountain for a tremendous view over Cook's and Opunohu bays. In Taha'a, you may drive across one of Taha'a highest mountains, visit a scenic viewpoint, learn the traditional use of local plants and trees, learn the tamure, a Tahitian dance, or tour a local vanilla plantation and a black pearl farm to learn how these treasures are cultured and harvested. In Raiatea, you may drive through bamboo forests, mango trees, and ginger flowers, or visit Marae Taputapuatea, the sacred site from where the ancient Polynesians departed to discover Hawaii, New Zealand, and Easter Island.

Catamaran Sail with Snorkel Explore an island's lagoons aboard a catamaran, then drop anchor for a snorkeling adventure.

Island Tours Explore the culture of a French Polynesian island by car or bus. Expect to visit scenic overlooks, museums, cultural centers, markets and more.

Snorkeling Snorkeling excursions are offered at almost every port of call in Tahiti and French Polynesia, including uninhabited motus (islets) off the coast. Enjoy abundant marine life like tropical fish and pristine coral formations.

Dolphin Watching Expedition On these excursions, with a little luck, you'll see schools of spinner dolphins. Dolphins are found around many islands, and guests visiting between July and early November may also view humpback whales in their annual mating and calfing rituals.

Glass-Bottom Boat Discover the coral gardens and tropical fish on a glass-bottom boat tour. You'll slowly float over the huge coral heads that cluster in shallow areas, viewing a colorful world full of parrot fish, butterfly fish, and surgeon fish through the large windows. Your boat crew will attract the fish under the glass panels to make it easy for you to observe and photograph them.

Golf in Paradise at the Moorea Green Pearl Enjoy magnificent mountain and ocean views while playing this 18-hole championship course. The Nicklaus Design team created the course around the natural beauty of the island. Amateurs and professionals alike will find the Moorea Green Pearl Golf Course to be both challenging and inspirational.

In Paul Gauguin's Footsteps Take a walk in the footsteps of Paul Gauguin and explore the museum that bears his name during this scenic tour of Tahiti. Gauguin lived in Polynesia from June 1891 to August 1893 and again from August 1895 to May 1903, the time of his death in the Marquesas Islands. The museum features a few of Gauguin's original works, and an interesting retrospective of his life in the islands as told through his documents, letters, writings and household objects. There is also a miniature display of Gauguin's work that depicts the location of all of his paintings.

Snorkel and Black Pearl Farm Discover the Motu Pearl Farm, where you'll learn all about the magnificent black pearl. Continue to a small motu for some snorkeling in the crystal clear lagoon of Taha'a and get acquainted with the myriad of tropical fish there. You'll also find a small lagoonarium where you can swim with turtles, rays, and fish enclosed in different pools.

Snorkeling Rangiroa Aquarium Discover Rangiroa's spectacular marine life during this scenic visit to Motu Nui Nui, a natural, open-water aquarium. Observe an abundance of colorful fish, coral and marine life. You may also have an opportunity to hand-feed the fish.

5 reasons to see French Polynesia on a Windstar Cruise

A big thank you to Windstar Cruises for hosting my cruise so I could review my experience. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Tahiti. Bora Bora. Moorea. The names conjure exotic islands floating in iridescent waters, trimmed with swaying palms and talcum-sand beaches. Part of French Polynesia, they beckon to travelers like Bali Ha’i fantasies in the far reaches of the South Pacific.

They were top of mind as I boarded the inaugural 11-night sailing in French Polynesia of Windstar Cruises’ 312-passenger Star Breeze, which departed from Papeete, Tahiti. It was my first trip to this legendary vacation haven, and I was eager to see it up close and personal.

But Mother Nature had other plans. As oversized Tropical Cyclone Nat headed straight for Tahiti from the east, Star Breeze’s Capt. Simon Terry decided to divert the ship some 900 miles  northeast to the little-known Marquesas Islands — about 3,000 miles from anywhere else on the planet. This off-the-grid archipelago, still part of French Polynesia, is so remote, in fact, that it sees precious few cruises — or visitors. Most people arrive by yacht or sailboat. In his 32 years at sea, Capt. Terry had never had to change an entire itinerary on such short notice.

But in a twist of fate, our impromptu stop in the Marquesas became a sneak peek because Star Breeze is actually planning to include these islands in its July 2024 itinerary. And the fact that the ship was able to pivot so successfully is just one of five reasons why a Windstar cruise is the perfect way to see French Polynesia.

Local expertise

Windstar has been sailing in French Polynesia for 36 years, longer than any other cruise line. And it capitalizes on its destination expertise. “The relationships, the friendships that we have here in Tahiti are so strong, so profound,” said Windstar Cruises’ President, Christopher Prelog, who was on board this sailing. “You get to see Tahiti behind the scenes beyond the (famous) beaches and landscape. The best part is its people.”

Indeed, shore excursions at most ports of call included a culture-focused option in addition to typical outdoor adventures such as diving, snorkeling, biking, hiking and exploring by ATV — all enriched by knowledgeable guides. You could take heritage tours to sacred archaeological sites, visit vanilla plantations and pearl farms (and harvest your own Tahitian black pearls), watch the famed fire dancers, and — unique to Windstar — check out the Coral Gardeners reef restoration lab, which is replanting coral in the islands.

“Our goal is to show the real Polynesia to guests, not just snorkeling and jet skis,” the destinations manager Kuba Rudolff told me.

Prelog agrees. “On our ATV tour in Huahine, you get to see the holy (blue-eyed) eels (which are revered here),” he said. “We’re offering something guests haven’t seen before and trying to offer surprises.”

Consider my immersive cultural tour of Fakarava, before we sped away from the cyclone. I tried my hand at Polynesian javelin throwing (harder than it looks), watched how to harvest coconut meat, learned how to braid palm fronds into fish, and sipped fresh coconut water from its shell while a four-piece band and two dancers welcomed us, Polynesian-style.

Size of ships

Windstar’s six small ships, none with more than 312 passengers, are perfect for Polynesia’s smaller islands and atolls. They’re able to nose into intimate ports that are off limits to larger vessels. While some larger cruise lines visit the top tourist islands, few call at the less-frequented ones, like Windstar does. Consider the vacation hotspot of Bora Bora, which even limits daily cruise passengers to 1,200 — effectively preventing large ships from docking.

Unlike larger ships, there were no lines for the restaurants or buffet or for tendering ashore, and excursions were all in small groups. “The size allows you to personalize the experience,” said Prelog. “300 passengers is the sweet spot. Guests want a smaller, less-crowded experience.”

Plus, island hopping through these pristine waters, just like the first Polynesians did about 2,000 years ago, is a far different experience than a week in a land-based hotel.

Staff and crew

Passengers uniformly raved about the staff and crew. “The cruise communicates a family feeling throughout — from the start when the ship’s company greets everyone with ‘welcome home,’” said passenger John Perkowski, from Kansas City, MO, who was on his seventh Windstar cruise. “The staff and passengers really intermix. Windstar selects such wonderfully friendly people.”

Another passenger, Terri Campbell from Charlotte, NC, also cited the size and staff as the reasons she chose to cruise with Windstar for the fourth time. “It’s smaller and more intimate. The staff is more attentive; they make everyone feel good. From my first trip, they called me by name.”

The line’s whopping 90% employee return rate speaks volumes about the good vibes on board.

Local culture on board

Windstar is admirably destination focused. To enhance that, it recently added two new roles: a guest lecturer and a cultural ambassador, who join a local chef in bringing Polynesian traditions onto the ship.

From Tahitian lecturer Aroha Teiva, I learned fascinating facts about Polynesian history. Starting about 1,500 years ago, the first Polynesians originally came from — wait for it — Taiwan from where they spread out in outrigger canoes across the vast Pacific from New Zealand in the south to Hawaii in the north and all the way to Easter Island in the east. In all, they explored an area about 10 million square miles and located more than 1,000 islands! (Polynesia means “many islands.”)

What’s more, when Europeans first arrived in the 16 th century, they found sweet potato and squash, two foods native to the New World — evidence that these skilled, intrepid seafarers discovered the Americas long before Europeans did.

Meanwhile, Polynesian cultural ambassador Pearl Manate, clad in a beautiful Tahitian outfit and flowers in her hair, gave hands-on classes in language, fashion, dance and music — all delivered with a warm smile. I learned essential words in the Tahitian language ( la orana for “hello,” maururu for “thank you,” and nana for “goodbye”); how to tie and wear a pareo , the colorful native skirt; how to use my arms to dance Tahitian-style and how to strum a ukulele (I mastered “You Are My Sunshine” and a simple Polynesian tune).

Local food and entertainment showed up on the ship, too: poissan cru , Tahiti's national dish of raw fish marinated in lime juice and coconut milk; chicken fafa , skillet-cooked chicken, rice and coconut milk; and market-fresh fruits for breakfast, including starfruit, papaya, mango and others. And Windstar’s signature deck-top BBQ dinner featured a group of traditional Marquesan dancers and drummers who wowed us with their rhythmic moves.

Even the nightly turndown service spotlighted Tahitian culture. Guests returned to their suites at night to find small local gifts: a scented soap from Bora Bora, a bottle of frangipani-scented perfume, a small bottle of Tahiti's famous Monoi oil, and coconut sweets, as well as notecards with Tahitian vocabulary words and explanations of local legends.

Marquesas Islands

“This is my paradise. Life is simple here,” said our driver Judith Tehuitua, as she shuttled us around Nuku Hiva, the Marquesas’ principal island (population: 3,000), in her pickup truck. We had just arrived in this rugged archipelago, whose islands are wrapped in primeval vegetation and sculpted by jagged volcanic peaks. American writer Herman Melville set his first novel, Typee, on Nuku Hiva when he visited in the 1840s.

Despite having only 9,000 inhabitants in all, these islands are so isolated that they developed their own language (Marquesan, distinct from Tahitian spoken in the rest of French Polynesia), dances (on tiptoe for women, instead of flat-footed elsewhere) and even tattoo symbols. Under sunny skies, Judith drove us high into the mountains, through lush vegetation dripping with bananas, mangoes, bougainvillea and breadfruit, to an ancient archaeological site. On a groaning board laid out for us, we sampled manioc cake, breadfruit chips, jellylike baby coconut and exotic tropical fruits.

Later, back in the main port of Taiohae, a local troupe performed the traditional Bird Dance for cruise passengers in a ceremonial amphitheater dotted with sacred totems. The site hosts a regional festival every few years, “when we invite our ‘cousins’ from Tahiti, Easter Island, Tonga, New Zealand, Samoa and Honolulu,” Judith told us. Sporting feathered headdresses, loin cloths and some, tattooed from head to toe, the performers entranced us, as the sun set behind craggy cliffs. Dance is integral to Marquesan culture as a way to preserve a tradition nearly eliminated by early colonialists.

Our next stop was Hiva Oa, where the French fauvist painter, Paul Gauguin, worked and eventually died in 1903. I visited the small Paul Gauguin Cultural Center that displays reproductions of his paintings, his simple thatched-roof house next door, and his plain grave in the hilltop Calvary Cemetery.

Hiva Oa’s savage, otherworldly beauty, so fetching in Gauguin’s work, surrounded us on our tour to a  marae , or sacred worship site, tucked into dense, pungent thickets. Our university-educated guide, Bryan O’Connor (his great-grandfather was Irish), explained that maraes were used for ceremonial rituals, including human sacrifices and cannibalism, when the people here were organized in tribes. Other ancestral traditions remain strong. “Hunting and fishing are still part of our education, which starts young,” he added. “I killed my first pig when I was six years old — with a knife.”

But the highlight of our visit was an extraordinary dance and drum performance hosted by the mayor of Hiva Oa in honor of a young wedding couple onboard our ship whose planned nuptials in Bora Bora had to be canceled. Dressed in traditional costumes, the bride and groom joined the dancers on the field and received a blessing from a local shaman. Many of the island's 2,500 people turned out for the celebration, bringing a potluck of local dishes for cruise guests to try afterward. With only 22 tourists on the island that day (without Windstar passengers), it seems we made a splash of our own.

Secluded and lacking the dazzling coral reefs of other Polynesian islands, the Marquesas may never join the tourism mainstream. But that made our unexpected visit on this magical mystery cruise all the more memorable.
