Kerala Backwaters – 24 Hours on an Alleppey Houseboat

Written By: The Planet D

Updated On: March 2, 2023

We had read that visiting the Kerala backwaters was a must when visiting Alleppey in India. According to The Lonely Planet , an Alleppey houseboat tour may be one of the most expensive things that you do in India, but it is well worth it.

So naturally, we booked a houseboat tour and splurged on a cruise to the backwater canals and tributaries of Alleppey.

The Backwaters of Alleppey are known as God’s own country and we wholly agree.

Alleppey Houseboat Tour of the Kerala Backwaters

We had booked our backwaters tour while hanging out in Varkala having no idea what to expect.

After 2 1/2 hour on the train, a driver was waiting for us at the station to transfer us the jetty that would be our home for the next 24 hours.  We had heard that booking outside of Alleppey was not a smart idea. You could end up with an old rust bucket and be stuck on a terrible cruise.

But we had a good feeling about our contact in Varkala and decided to chance it. It is much less hassle than walking to the jetty and haggling over a price. What a lovely surprise to see that we actually had a great boat.  Our houseboat was a spacious riverboat complete with bamboo cover and wicker furniture set up for a 24 hour adventure into the backwaters.

You can book houseboats when you arrive for a cheaper deal, but if you want to save time and hassle, you can also book in advance. Get Your Guide offers several options:

  • 2 Day Alappuzha Backwater Houseboat Cruise – Includes transfers and overnight stay on a delux houseboat. Easy cancellation up to 24 hours in advanace.

Kerala Vembanadu Lake Full Day Cruise – If you don’t want to stay overnight, this 7 hour cruise is a good option. Includes transfers and lunch. Plus easy cancellaion.

About Alleppey Houseboats

kerala backwaters allepey houseboat our boathouse

The traditional houseboat (‘Kettuvellam’ in Malayalam) are as elegant as they was historic.

The houseboats are made from old cargo vessels transformed into traditional houseboats.

They are a beautiful design. Made from twine, wicker and bamboo.

The famous houseboats of Alleppey were made to float down the rivers and backwaters looking timeless.

Our houseboat was exactly what you would want for an exotic Asian Cruise adventure.

Inside our Houseboat in Alleppey

Cushions were set up all around the boat for us to sit and view the Kerala backwaters from any direction.

A table was set up in the middle of the dark wooden frame and we were welcomed with fresh fruit and coconut juice.

All of this was shaded with a bamboo cover and we sat in luxury as we watched life go by on the river.

About the Kerala Backwaters

kerala backwaters life on the shore

They Kerala Backwaters consist of lagoons, rivers, canals and lakes running parallel to the Arabian Sea from Varkala to Kerala in Southern India.

There are 900 km of waterways in Kerala with the vast Vembanad Lake in its centre.

The Kerala backwaters are known as the Venice of the East or the Land of Canals and this title certainly rings true in Kerala.

The canals and rivers are the lifeblood of Kerala.

People live and work on the backwaters the way other places use roads and highways to commute to work.

Alleppey Backwaters – The Symbol of Kerala

sunset on the kerala backwaters in india

The backwaters have always been the symbol of Kerala and we were mesmerized the moment we started our journey.

Lined with swaying palm trees dotted on both sides, it feels as if you have entered a time warp.

Houses line the riverbanks, there are schools on either side of the lake and we could even see small children studying in their classrooms.

Water taxis make regular runs like public buses would in a city, villages are built on canals, and shops and markets sit on the river banks.

There didn’t seem to be a reason for anyone to ever leave the backwaters of Kerala.

Private Houseboat

backwaters kerala india houseboat

We started our backwaters houseboat tour from Alleppey (or Allappuzha) and that is where boarded our houseboat.

Another popular place to board houseboats in Kerala is Kumarakom. These are the two main hubs, but there are 900 km of waterways, so you can find houseboats at many cities along the route. Try looking in Kochi, Kottayam or Kollam as well.

Our tour began at 12:00 noon. We had a full day ahead of us to see life on the backwaters.

Life on the Houseboat

alleppey houseboat kerala backwaters video

“Saji”, our chef got straight to work preparing our lunch as our trusty captain “Captain Kudappe” skillfully steered us through the narrow canals and vast lakes.

We had our one bedroom boat to ourselves. We splurged on our budget for this tour and explored the backwaters in style.

As we watched life go by around us, we ate grapes and bananas and lounged in the sun. When it got too hot, we turned on the fan.

And we hid under the bamboo canopy feeling the breeze of the fresh air.

We entered many small canals while cruising the lake.

The islands and paddy fields on either side were separated by lagoons, coconut groves, brooks and small gushing streams.

Feasts and Relaxation

food on kerala houseboat tour from alleppey

The scenery is quite beautiful in the Kerala Backwaters and the chef-prepared food on our houseboat was excellent.

We were fed 3 meals in total during our overnight trip.

Lunch when we boarded the boat at noon, dinner that evening, and breakfast the following morning.

There was more food than we could possibly eat and it was an excellent assortment of Indian sauces with rice, chipatti and pappadam.

Most of it was vegetarian, but we were also served lake fish with each meal.

You can let them know if you want vegetarian or meat ahead of time.

Fishermen and Vendors

man on canoe view from houseboat tour in alleppey india

Vendors will approach the boat and offer to sell prawns, but we declined.

We had blown the budget enough on the trip and 900 rupees was a little steep for us.

I believe that it is well worth the money though.  These fishermen work hard for the prawns.

They dive down to depths of 20 feet looking for shellfish.

That water is dark and murky.  I wouldn’t want to even swim in it, let alone pull myself to great depths looking for fish.

fishing in the kerala backwaters

I do wish that we brought some wine or beer on board with us. I would have loved to sip a cold beverage while enjoying the scenery.

Alas, we sipped tea as our thoughts were occasionally broken by chirpings by the cormorant cuckoos and egrets.

It’s A Long Time on a Houseboat

alleppey houseboat view of backwater canal in kerala

There are many options for houseboat tours from Alleppey. You can do a couple of hours, an overnight and even several days.

Boats range from small daytrippers to huge houseboats with several bedrooms. Our had one bedroom which was perfect for Dave and myself.

Be prepared, after you’ve watched life on the river for a few hours, the houseboat tour becomes a bit monotonous.

It is a good time to read a book, meditate, or play a game of travel scrabble.

We found that a few hours is more than enough on a houseboat and really you can see all that you want to see in one afternoon.

But it is a romantic notion to sleep in the Kerala backwaters.

You can book day tours of the Kerala Backwaters :

Nightime on the Houseboat

sunset on kerala backwaters

We tied up for the night at about 5:00 pm, as the sun was setting and ate our dinner at 7:00.

It is serene to be out there alone and to experience an overnight tour, takes you away from the hustle and bustle of the daytrippers and lets you see local life in a more intimate setting.

The bugs came out in full force and you couldn’t stay out and enjoy the evening for long after dinner.

By 8:00 pm we were in bed under the safety of our mosquito blanket.

I would have liked to have anchored in the lake rather than mooring up to a dock. It took away from the authenticity of the experience.

Every time we ate, we moored the boat.

It would have been so nice to anchor in the harbour or to keep driving.  We never seemed to dock at scenic areas either.

All of the boats seemed to dock in groups as well.

Impression of Kerala Backwaters Tours

woman washing in kerala backwaters

The Kerala Backwaters are a must see destination in India.

It was fascinating to see a glimpse of how every day life goes on in the area and the scenery was beautiful.

Was the Alleppey houseboat tour worth the money?

Yes. We had a private boat, chef and captain.

We toured all day through the backwaters and we were fed 3 delicious meals. (included)

Was the Alleppey Houseboat Tour an unforgettable experience?

boathouse kerala

Not really. We didn’t love it.  But we are glad we did it.

We would have liked to have been able to get off the boat to explore the villages of the backwaters and see the sites.

We took a similar trip in Vietnam to the Mekong Delta , and at the time, we mocked all our stops to get off the boat to see rice paper making factories and touring distilleries. On this in Kerala, we wished that we had something to do other than watching life from the sidelines.

Once we docked for the night we tried to relax to watch the sunset, but after it went down, there wasn’t a lot to do as we waited for dinner.

After dinner we went straight to bed because of the mosquitoes. Once the sun went down, the mosquitoes were brutal and we could have used a mosquito net on the boat.

Get an Air conditioned Houseboat

kerala alleppey houseboat views

We recommend getting an air conditioned houseboat.

It is hot at night and there isn’t much of a breeze. Plus the bugs are a plenty.  An air conditioned room would take care of all of the discomforts.

We ended up having to sleep with our door and windows open and the fan on full force.

When to do a Backwaters Tour in Alleppey

kerala backwaters houseboat tour boat

It was November when we toured Alleppey and it was the perfect time to do a Kerala Backwaters Tour.

The busy season was still a couple of weeks away and the system wasn’t over crowded with house boats yet.

I hear that it can become almost gridlock in the high season and I can believe it. We saw many houseboats parked waiting for the chaos to begin.

Peak season is said to be between September and February, but it doesn’t really pick up until December.

We were in Alleppey in November and it felt quite peaceful.

Other Times to Tour the Kerala Backwaters

man with bamboo pole on riverbank in backwatres

If you want to go to the backwaters when there are few crowds, the monsoon season between June and August can be quiet and the rains can keep temperatures comfortable.

From March to May it is hot and humid so you will want to splurge on a houseboat with air conditioning. Although we felt that we could have used air conditioning in November.

Beautiful blog. Kerala is a really beautiful place. I must visit.

Nice blog. Alleppey is beautiful and the houseboat experience is awesome.

Thank you. I think this helped me decide that we are going to do a day trip instead of an overnight on a houseboat. Now…where to be based for that night…

You can stay in the town of Alleppey, there are lots of choices. Best of luck and enjoy!

Great Article davendeb . Alleppey is surely a great backwater destination in Kerala and a must visit place as you mentioned. I am a traveler too and i loved Kerala and House Boat Cruise on green emerald water of the Alleppey. Food is just great and spicy one.

Thank you so much for such a nice post. its very useful for me thanks for sharing

Well that definitely is very different from what a houseboat looks like in the U.S 🙂 It’s unfortunate you were kind of like prisoners on your boat but at least it seemed comfortable and yes you can’t beat a personal chef. .-= Michael Firstman@ Best Mig Welder´s last blog ..Ingersoll Rand 80 – 120 Gallon Rotary Screw Air Compressor =-.

Nisha, Alleppey is beautiful and the backwaters are something not to be missed.

Thanks for the video and the writeup as well. This post has been super informative. I remember seeing those boats on some travel show years ago and I was taken by the design of the things. I think they’re gorgeous… I would love to cruise around in one of those anywhere in the world. Overall it looks like a chilled out way to take in a part of India. .-= Kirsty´s last blog ..My International Volunteering Ebook is in the Works =-.

Hi Dave & Deb, I don’t think it’s a bad thing to want to be on the move all the time. Everyone travels differently, and as long as you enjoy it that’s great. We just like to take it easy sometimes! Especially after a few months travelling around Asia. .-= Erin´s last blog ..Kerala Guidebook Review: Lonely Planet South India =-.

Thanks for the detailed post. I have heard people say that they get bored on the overnight houseboat trip, but just to give an alternative experience- we loved it! One night wasn’t enough for us and we would have liked another night on the boat.

We just felt so chilled out and relaxed, and really enjoyed the beautiful surroundings. I think it depends if you are a person who can occupy themself, or who likes to be on the move all the time. We had plenty of books to read, journal writing to catch up on and a guitar to play, so along with watching the fascinating world go by we never got bored.

However, I would recommend combining a houseboat trip with other trips in the backwaters to get a fuller, more interactive experience. We did a village canoe trip from Kollam, and stayed at a wonderful homestay near Alleppey for 5 days. I’ve written more about our trip on my Kerala blog. Regards, Erin

Hi Erin, thanks for the comment. You are so right. We tend to always want to be on the move and it is something that we have to work on. We need to learn to slow down. We seem to always be looking for the great adventure and life is about the little things. I do believe you are correct in combining the trip with other trips. The home stay sounds wonderful. Dave and I will learn from your advice and take our time.

this gave me some happy memories: I just loved my time on the waterways of Kerala … I didn’t stay overnight as decided it was too expensive. I also re-read ‘God of Small Things’ while I was there .. it was so good to read about the area while I was actually in the same place … then left it( and my guide book) on the train when I was off to stay with a real live prince ( see http://heatherhapeta.blogspot.com for a story about it) .-= heather, the kiwitravelwriter´s last blog ..Mad About Tulips =-.

Ooh, a real live Prince! Heather, that must have been incredible. I always love to read a novel that takes place in the country or location that I am visiting. It just makes it that much more special. I am going to check out that post!

Wow, what an experience though! I appreciate that you always tell it like it is. I have to agree with Shannon – based on your post, I’d look for a half-day tour instead, if possible. It would be interesting to hear what response, if any, you’d get if you sent your suggestions to the tour operator you used – it’s really great feedback for them. .-= Trisha Miller´s last blog .. Are You As Organized as You Can Be? =-.

Thanks Trisha, that is a great idea. Our tour operator really was a great guy and we have his email, so we will definitely drop him a line.

I wonder – do they offer half-day tours of the backwaters, so that you don’t have the boredom of evening? It looks like it was incredibly calm back there though, that’s just not something I saw a lot of in India, so I find it really interesting that you got a chance to experience a slice of that 🙂 .-= Shannon OD´s last blog .. A little authenticity…Toe-tapping Irish music =-.

Hi Shannon, Yes they do offer 1/2 day tours. You can go by canoe or covered boat and pay hourly. The houseboat was nice because you could go deep into the backwaters, but I think that you can get a good idea of life on the canals with a half day tour. So far, we have only experienced calm in India. It is going to be a big change once we get to the north. For now we are relishing our laid back time in the country.

The 'backwaters' is the name of the enchanting palm-lined waterways that are synonymous with Kerala. This 900-odd kilometre labyrinth of canals connects large regions of Kerala and was constructed centuries ago for transporting cargo, such as spices and rice.

Traditional boats called kettuvallam (made by tying pieces of wood together with coir rope, made from coconut fibres) collected the cargo from isolated villages along the waterways and carried it to traders in town. However, use of the boats fell as a preference for modern forms of transport grew. The vessels are now being used for houseboat trips on Kerala's backwaters and have become one of the region's most popular attractions.

Kerala's backwaters still function as an important hub of local life. Commuting, fishing and farming are frequently undertaken on the backwaters and a Keralan houseboat trip provides a fascinating glimpse into these everyday activities. It feels like a journey through another world as you glide past homes, paddy fields, coconut groves, churches, temples, toddy shops and wildlife.

Here's my essential guide to cruising the Kerala backwaters by houseboat.

Traditional houseboat on Kerala's backwaters

Cruising Kerala backwaters by houseboat

Everything you need to know about cruising the backwaters.

An overnight stay or multi-day backwaters cruise aboard a traditional Keralan houseboat will reward you with a surreal sunset reflected on the water; delicious Keralan food, freshly cooked on board the boat, makes it even more enjoyable.

Here's an idea of what to expect and how a backwaters houseboat cruise works.

What are Kerala houseboats like?

Keralan houseboats come in various shapes and sizes, from basic to ultra-luxurious. There are even houseboats with spas and swimming pools.

The smallest houseboats have one bedroom, while the largest have ten. Some have rooftop sun decks. Keep in mind that only one and two-bedroom houseboats can cruise along the narrow waterways. Bigger houseboats won't fit here and are best for shorter trips.

Most houseboats are quite comfortable with living rooms, dining rooms, modern amenities, air-conditioning, and en-suite bathrooms. Expect all your meals to be cooked for you by an onboard chef. Most houseboats will ask you to specify whether you want vegetarian or non-vegetarian meals before setting off.

Be aware that you'll spend most of your time on the water. This is a chance to switch off from life, meditate on the views and slow down—not something you always get to do when travelling in India.

Where are the Kerala backwaters?

The Kerala backwaters primarily extend from the major port city of Kochi to coastal Kollam. However, there are backwaters in the far north and south of the state as well.

The main starting point for most backwater cruises is Alleppey, about two hours south of Kochi. Known as the ‘City of Canals’ and the ‘Venice of the East’, Alleppey is the centre of backwater houseboat tourism. Nearby Kumarakom is also a popular place for houseboats.

Of the 1,200 plus houseboats in Kerala, about 700 operate in the core waterways of Alleppey and Kumarakom. Depending on your itinerary, it might be better to begin your houseboat trip elsewhere to avoid this overcrowding. This is particularly true if you don't want to find yourself surrounded by dozens of boats on standard routes during the peak season of December and January . Some are likely to be laden with rowdy domestic tourists who delight in playing loud music and getting drunk. Recommended alternative starting points are Kottayam, Kollam, Kasargod in northern Kerala, and Kozhikode (Calicut).

How long should I spend on a Kerala houseboat trip?

Houseboat trips are typically for one-day or overnight. However, it's possible to hire a houseboat for shorter or longer lengths. A three-night trip will cover the top canals, interior villages, and more remote waterways. However, a brief three-hour trip may not be sufficient if you're interested in seeing a lot of the small canals or want to experience rural life.

You can combine a houseboat trip with a stay at a resort or homestay along the backwaters. Many accommodations have their own houseboats, and offer overnight and sunset cruises.

Do note that the boats must be moored after sunset, so that fishing activity isn't disturbed.

Keralan houseboat routes and what to see

Alleppey-Kumarakom

The most common Keralan houseboat routes are round trips from Alleppey and Kumarakom. The Alleppey waterways are made up of a mixture of wide and narrow canals, dotted with villages and paddy fields. Alleppey is also a centre of coir manufacturing with factories that you can visit. Kumarakom has wider waterways and is dominated by the vast expanse of Lake Vembanad (one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia). Highlights include the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary and Pathiramanal Island, where you can see cormorants, herons and kingfishers, amongst many other bird species. In between Alleppey and Kumarakom are sprawling reclaimed farming areas such as C Block, R Block, and H Block.

North of Kumarakom, the rivers and canals of Vaikom merge with Vembanad Lake. Tranquil Vaikom is one of the oldest townships in Kerala and offers village life experiences. Pottery, mat weaving, coconut processing, sand mining, and making coir ropes are carried out there. This is a convenient destination for one-day backwater excursions from Kochi, as it's only an hour away by car from the city.

Alleppey-Kuttanad

Those who want to avoid the glut of houseboats will find the unconventional Alleppey- Kuttanad route via Punnamada Lake the most appealing. This encompasses quiet and calm waterways around Thottappally, Nedumudi and Thakazhi. The Kuttanad district is referred to as the ‘rice bowl of Kerala’ and cultivation of rice here is intriguingly done below sea level.

Kollam-Ashtamudi Lake

Kollam has grown in popularity as a backwater destination but it's yet to become touristy. It offers a very different experience to Alleppey and Kumarakom due to its important history. It has one of the oldest trading ports on the state's coast and a thriving cashew industry. Ashtamudi Lake is the focal point of houseboat trips in this area, with mangroves and migratory birds. There are more than 15 islands on the lake. One of them is Monroe Island, which draws visitors who want an authentic slice of local life away from the crowds. Routes cover the islands and pass through relatively unexplored waterways. You'll get to see plantations, Chinese fishing nets, rustic villages, a heritage palace, and diverse places of worship.

Kozhikode backwaters

The unspoiled Kozhikode backwaters are situated near Kappad beach and Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, about five hours north of Kochi. This area is also historically important, as it's where Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama landed in the 15th century. Houseboat trip routes include Canolly Canal, Kallai River and Ellathur village.

One-way houseboat trips

It's possible to take a one-way houseboat trip, starting in one destination and ending in another, such as Alleppey to Kumarakom. The cost may be higher if the boat needs to return to its original departure point. The route between Alleppey and Kollam is ideal for a longer one-way trip, extending across two nights. It's very scenic with many narrow canals, farm fields, and secluded villages. Plus, it goes past Amritapuri Ashram of Amma , the "Hugging Mother". Alumkadavu, where houseboats are built, is another attraction on the route.

Other off-the-radar routes include Alleppey to Kidangara (one-night), Alleppey to Mankotta (one-night), Chettuva to Manaloor in Thrissur district, and the Poothotta backwaters near Kumarakom.

India Keralabackwaters3

Hidden gems on the Kerala backwaters

A newly renovated cruise boat terminal at Kochi is set to increase backwater tourism in the area, with routes covering city landmarks such as Bolgatti Palace and Cochin Shipyards, and Vypeen Island. However, tourists who want to go on a backwater trip from Kochi in a traditional-style houseboat are typically taken to departure points elsewhere.

Northern Kerala

Houseboat tourism is still in its infancy in northern Kerala's Kasaragod district, meaning idyllic and undisturbed waterways. There are a couple of houseboat routes here. One runs between Payyanur and Kottapuram near Nileshwar, covering Valiyaparamba Island and the Kavvayi backwaters. Oyster Opera theme village, dedicated to oyster farming, lies along this route. The other route covers the waterways around Chandragiri, near Bekal, where there's a 17th century fort built by Sivappa Naik of Bedanore.

Southern Kerala

In far southern Kerala, the waterways around capital city Trivandrum are defined by lakes and rivers. This area has fewer houseboats and isn't optimal for backwater trips. A cruise along the picturesque Poovar backwaters, about an hour south of Trivandrum, in a motorboat or country boat is your best bet.

How to book a Keralan backwater tour

The boom in backwater tourism and associated proliferation in houseboats is posing a concerning threat to the environment in Kerala. The waterways around Alleppey and Kumarakom have become noticeably polluted as a result of poor waste management practices.

In order to address this, the Keralan government has introduced a new houseboat classification system with Silver, Gold and Diamond ratings (to replace the older Silver Star, Gold Star and Green Palm categories).

The ratings take into account factors such as responsible waste management, disability-friendly features, use of eco-friendly materials, codes of conduct for guests and staff, quality of furnishings and fixtures, use of LED lamps, biogas stoves, smoke alarms, and first-aid kits.

When booking with a houseboat operator or tour company, it's important to check that the houseboat has been appropriately registered and classified.

Experiencing Kerala’s backwaters beyond houseboats

Many visitors to Kerala are now choosing to take tours in smaller local boats (called country boats), canoes, or even kayaks, to villages along the narrower canals where houseboats can't go. This provides a more intimate, immersive experience of the Keralan backwaters.

Another alternative is to spend a night or two at a hotel or homestay alongside the waterways and dreamily watch the houseboats go by. Numerous options are concentrated around Alleppey and Kumarakom.

Those who are travelling on a budget and want to save money can take one of the public ferry services operated by the State Water Transport Department, such as the one between Alleppey and Kottayam.

Love tea? include the hill town of Munnar on your itinerary. It's one of India's top tea producing areas where you can see tea being harvested, go tea tasting, take a plantation walk, and even stay on a plantation. It's about a six hour drive from Kochi.

Kochi will charm anyone who appreciates architecture and history. It's a beguiling blend of Arab, British, Dutch, Chinese, Portuguese, and Jewish influences. A bit over an hour north of Kochi, the Muziris heritage precinct (from North Paravur to Kodungallur) has some of the oldest religious structures in India, dating back thousands of years to the time Muziris was an ancient port city. It's one of the country's biggest conservation projects.

The most popular attractions in this forested area in Kerala's Idukki district are Periyar National Park, the spice plantations at Kumily, and local tribal villages.

India Kerala Thekkady

This lush hilly region along the Western Ghat mountains also has tea, coffee and spice plantations. It attracts adventure enthusiasts who trek to spots such as Chembra Peak and Meenmutty Falls and go bamboo rafting at Kuruva Island. The prehistoric carvings at Edakkal caves are compelling too.

Visiting the backwaters around Alleppey and want a beach break nearby? Marari borders a fishing village and remains relatively undeveloped, yet has a temping range of accommodations. Some are bang on the beach and offer authentic Ayurvedic treatments.

Folk arts and dance

Kathakali (an elaborately costumed dance-drama) is the most well known of Kerala's many unique and unusual folk art forms. Others include theyyam ( an ancient ritual art form that involves the channeling of deities that come to earth), kalaripayattu (a form of martial arts), and pulikali (tiger play performed during the Onam festival, whereby men dress up as tigers and dance to traditional percussion instruments).

Essential Guide to Hiring a Houseboat in Kerala

overnight houseboat trip

Hiring a traditional thatched Kerala houseboat and exploring the backwaters is one of the top things to do in Kerala . However, there are a few important things you should know in order to go about it the right way and make the best decision.

Where to Hire a Houseboat

The majority of houseboats are hired from Alleppey, the gateway to the backwaters in between Kochi and Kollam. It's located about two hours south of Kochi . Most houseboat operators and around 1,000 houseboats are based there. From Alleppey, you'll be taken on an adventure through the various backwaters to places such as Kumarakom, Kottayam, and Alumkadavu (near Kollam). There's a wide range of destinations to choose from to suit all travel plans. Houseboats will usually slowly travel a distance of around 40-50 kilometers (25-30 miles) through the backwaters each day, so you'll get to see lots of different scenery.

Many resorts and luxury hotels have their own houseboats as well. They offer sunset cruises and overnight trips. Other hotels and homestays will be able to readily arrange a houseboat for you. That way, you can combine staying along the backwaters with a houseboat ride.

Take a look at relaxing Kumarakom hotels and resorts and top homestays in Alleppey on the Kerala Backwaters for inspiration.

Depending on your itinerary and the time of year, it may be a good idea to hire a houseboat somewhere else than Alleppey to avoid the increasing overcrowding of boats there. Otherwise, you're likely to find yourself surrounded by dozens of boats on standard routes during peak season, and possibly encounter rowdy domestic tourists who delight in playing loud music and getting drunk. Recommended alternative starting points are Kottayam, Kollam, Kasargod in northern Kerala, and Kozhikode (Calicut).

Kollam has grown in popularity as a backwater destination but it's yet to become touristy. Ashtamudi Lake is the focal point of houseboat trips in the Kollam area, with mangroves and migratory birds. Monroe Island is one of 15 islands on the lake, and it attracts tourists who want an authentic experience of local life away from the crowds. Routes cover the islands and pass through relatively unexplored waterways. You'll get to see plantations, Chinese fishing nets, rustic villages, a heritage palace, and diverse places of worship.

The unspoiled Kozhikode backwaters are situated near Kappad beach and Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, about five hours north of Kochi. This historically important area is where Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama landed in the 15th century. Houseboat trip routes include Canolly Canal, Kallai River, and Ellathur village.

Houseboat tourism is still in its infancy in northern Kerala's Karasagod district, meaning idyllic and undisturbed waterways.

For the sake of convenience, some people might want to hire a houseboat in Kochi. It's possible but it won't offer the same experience as from Alleppey. You can do a backwater day trip from Kochi instead of staying overnight, or go out in a canoe or kayak. The boats leave from the main wharf area in Fort Kochi. Kochi-based Salmon Tours specializes in village backwater day tours in country boats, houseboats, and speedboats.

Alternatively, Breeze Backwater Homes is located on the backwaters between Kochi and Alleppey (about 40 minutes from Fort Kochi). This serene homestay with eco-friendly cottages offers reasonably priced overnight backwater trips in quality non-motorized houseboats.

How Long Are Houseboats Hired for?

You can hire a houseboat for as little as three hours or as long as a week! It's really up to you. However, you're interested in seeing a lot of the small canals, a three-hour trip may not be long enough. Day trips run from around midday until 6 p.m. Most people go for overnight hire, which includes a serene sleep out in the middle of nowhere, in a lake or other similarly peaceful spot. The houseboats then return by 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. the next day. Two-night houseboat hire is also popular. However, it can become boring for any length of time longer than this. 48 hours on a houseboat is definitely long enough to take in all the sights and re-charge your batteries. Such a trip will cover many of the top canals, interior villages, and remote peaceful waterways. Do note that the boats must be moored after sunset, to prevent disturbance to fishing activity.

What's the Best Route to Take?

Most people depart from Alleppey and do a round trip through the core backwater area. However, it's also possible to do one-way trips, such as from Alleppey to Kottayam (useful if you're going to or from Munnar or Periyar in Thekkady), and Alleppery to Kochi. Some of the best routes include:

  • Alleppey-Kuttanad -- renowned for its paddy fields, it has an extensive network of narrow backwaters and is an excellent destination for experiencing village life around Thottappally, Nudmudy and Thakazhi. The Kuttanad district is referred to as the "rice bowl of Kerala" and farming is intriguingly done below sea leave in this area.
  • Alleppey-Kumarakom -- many luxury resorts are located on the banks of Vembanad Lake in this area. It's also renowned for the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary and Pathiramanal Island. The canals are much wider and you'll cross the large expanse of the lake, plus sprawling reclaimed farming areas such as C Block, R Block, and H Block.
  • Alleppey-Kollam -- this is a particularly long cruise, and is either a one-way day trip or overnight return. The route is really scenic with many narrow canals, farm fields, and secluded villages. It goes past Amritapuri Ashram of Amma the "Hugging Mother", and Alumkadavu where the houseboats are made.
  • Payyanur and Kottapuram near Nileshwar in Karasagod district -- this route covers Valiyaparamba Island and the Kavvayi backwaters. Oyster Opera theme village , dedicated to oyster farming, lies along it.

See photos of Kerala's backwater attractions .

How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Houseboat?

The cost of houseboat hire greatly depends on the size and quality of the boat, and the time of year (prices triple from late December to early January). Boats range from basic to ultra luxurious, with one to 10 bedrooms. Most boats have living rooms, dining rooms, modern amenities, air-conditioning, and attached bathrooms. Some have rooftop sun decks, spas and even swimming pools! A benefit of having an upper deck lounge area is that you'll be able to relax and enjoy the view in privacy away from the staff. Do keep in mind that boats with more than two bedrooms will be too big to cruise the narrow waterways though.

The minimum rate for overnight hire is around 5,000 rupees ($70) without air-conditioning. Most people pay around 10,000 rupees ($140) upwards to hire a deluxe air-conditioned houseboat for two. Rates easily go up to 18,000 rupees ($255) or more for a luxury houseboat. Large family sized houseboats, with multiple bedrooms and living rooms, are also available for hire. Prices start from around 20,000 rupees ($280) for one of these, for an overnight trip. The cost should include freshly cooked food, made by an onboard cook, and non-alcoholic drinks.

When Is the Best Time to Hire a Houseboat?

Peak season is from December to the end of January when the weather is cooler and dry, but it's possible to hire a houseboat all year round. Some people find that the monsoon season has special appeal and choose to combine their houseboat hire with an Ayurvedic treatment. Attractive monsoon discounts are offered as well. March to May gets very hot and humid, so if you hire a houseboat during this time, an air-conditioned one is definitely recommended.

Keep in mind that peak season does get busy. Don't be surprised to find the canals congested with houseboats!

What Are Some Reputable Kerala Houseboat Operators?

Unfortunately, the boom in backwater tourism and associated proliferation in houseboats is having a negative impact on the environment in Kerala. In particular, poor waste management practices are noticeably polluting the waterways around Alleppey and Kumarakom. In order to address this, the Kerala government has introduced a new houseboat classification system with Silver, Gold and Diamond ratings (to replace the older Silver Star, Gold Star and Green Palm categories). The ratings are based on factors including responsible waste management, disability-friendly features, use of eco-friendly materials, codes of conduct for guests and staff, quality of furnishings and fixtures, use of LED lamps, bio-gas stoves, smoke alarms, and first-aid kits.

There are so many houseboats for hire at Alleppey that it's not necessary to book in advance, apart from during the peak season. Instead head down to the jetty in the early morning (before 9 a.m.), inspect the boats there, and negotiate the best price. Then go back to your hotel, pack your belongings, and when you return to the boat it will be ready to depart.

During peak season, the availability of quality boats drops dramatically, and prices get hiked. As prices aren't properly regulated, they can fluctuate widely. To get an idea of prices and what's on offer (and also to book in advance if you wish), reputable companies that have a range of houseboats for hire include CGH Earth's luxury Spice Coast Cruises , Lakes and Lagoons , River and Country Cruises , and Ayana's Houseboats, Evergreen Tours , Angel Queen Houseboats , Eco Houseboats (owner Johnson also has a popular homestay in Alleppey).

For a luxurious boutique experience, try Xandari River Escapes .

Alternatives to Hiring a Houseboat

Budget or solo travelers may find it prohibitively expensive to hire a houseboat. There's no need to be disappointed though! There are other enjoyable ways of experiencing the backwaters. You can stay along the canals and watch the houseboats pass by, catch the public ferry along the backwaters and chat to the locals, or go on a canoe or motor boat trip down the small canals. Beautiful place. travel is house boat with different fish dishes is super. You can aslo stay in house boat for a day and its good

Our alleppy houseboat trip is really excellent. It is more than our expectation. M/s Prasanthi Houseboat Management has arranged House Boat for our trip. We two adults and two children travelled in the house boat on 25-5-2016 Afternoon to 26-5-2016 Morning. They have arranged Good House along with Lunch, Dinner and Breakfast. The staff members travelled along with us in the house boat are very nice and explained everything very nicely. During our trip the climate is very cool and raining. Every family has to travel at least once in a year in the house boat.

Took a day cruise over the waters of Alappuzha lakes and canals. Booked the house boat trip with Lakes and Lagoons (group of 4) in Pallathurthy, Alleppey The experience was simply marvelous as we gently glided along the labyrinth of natural canals, lakes and deltas observing natural sights and local water based village life with children ferried to schools, women boarding small boats for their household shopping trips, fishing activities both by fishermen in small boats and kingfishers and storks, farming in vast stretches of paddy fields, age old churches and temples enroute the waterway, while enjoying the ethnic homely cuisine prepared on the boat. The boat had a nice sunbathing area and a bedroom as well with well maintained showers and bathroom. Will visit to again to unwind and savor all of it again. Highly recommended.

A wonderful experience. Three old friends (in our 60s) hired a boat for 2 nights. One double and one twin room, both en suit and fabulous. We were looked after by 3 young men and our wish was their command. The food was amazing and the journey spectacular and so relaxing. A few little shops in the banks to explore. Herds of ducks to observe, goats cows on the banks. An experience not to be missed.

  • You will see breathtaking scenes of nature and spend a mind-blowing time overnight on the houseboat cruise in the Chapora river backwaters. You can spend your time in peace and feel mentally and physically relaxed escaping from the busy and hectic environment of city life. You will also observe the wonders of nature in the form of beautiful creatures like vibrant birds and playful dolphins at the spot where the Chapors river joins the Arabian Sea.
  • The Chapora river is situated in North Goa and moves to the Arabian Sea through the west. This river was famously known as the demarcated boundary between the Portuguese-held Goa and India during the reign of the Portuguese in Goa. To the south of the rivers lies Vagator Beach and to its north lies Morjim Beach . Chapora Fort is located near the river on the hilltop that was built in 1617 and will allure you when you see it even from the distance.

Overnight Houseboat Cruise Mandovi River

  • Max Guests : 100
  • Mandovi River

The houseboat contains a total of six luxuriously comfortable AC cabins, three each on the upper and lower deck of the houseboat. Book in advance to get the room of your choice. Once you do that, just sit back and enjoy the world of backwaters! Immerse yourself in the colors of the sun spray painting the horizon with orange, red, and yellow hues and its sparkling light making trails in the backwaters of Mandovi river.

The Mandovi river and its surrounding is the home to many local and migratory birds and even if you are not a keen bird observer, you can’t stop your heart from falling in love with these flocks of birds filling the sky while heading for their home at sunset.

Simultaneously, keep looking at both sides of this river cruise and see the wonderful villages of Goa and the views offered by Goan churches and farms flanking both sides of the houseboat.

Fishing gear will be provided if you feel like catching a fish or two and there are experts who know the river area which is rich with fishes. So enjoy this little sport while sailing in the Mondovi river .

Enjoy the aroma of seafood and get your appetite ready for some mouth-watering dinner while on this  overnight houseboat and if you have taken the caution of booking the window table in advance, then Congratulations on the view outside while dining! All you can do on the boat is to sit and relax and be surrounded by nature which soothes those whirls inside us.

Enjoy your solitude and you can use up this time for introspection. If you are a bookworm, enjoy reading with the wind in your hair and the waves against the houseboat which will serve as background music. You can play games or get to know fellow travelers and enjoy conversations along with drinks from the bar of the houseboat cruise.

Be close to nature by relaxing on the upper-deck lounge & enjoy sky-gazing. Be amidst the sky full of stars and moon smiling at you from above. Your stay on this overnight houseboat cruise will give you a sleep which will be one of your most peaceful nights. Sleep in cozy and clean beds while on the backwaters of the Mandovi River.

Wake up to the tunes of birds singing along to welcome the sun and a new day. If you are an early bird, this houseboat offers views of the sunrise which you will cherish forever. Absolutely amazing trip. The scenery, the staff, the catering - everything was just first class. Real NZ are extremely professional and well organised - everyone of their staff we met was professional, friendly and very knowledgeable. Truly an experience we won’t forget Tony P, Via TripAdvisor
The Real NZ overnight tour on Doubtful Sound we took last week was outstanding. A magical place. And the crew was first-rate and very friendly and helpful. Stuart B, Via TripAdvisor
This was such a wonderful experience from start to finish so, if you get a chance to do it, we would thoroughly recommend it. We were also so impressed with RealNZ. The trip organisation worked like clockwork and every one of the staff we met, from drivers to the crew, were great. Thanks especially to our principal driver, Paulie (it isn’t really fair to single any one person out but he was just so nice and helpful). As for the cruise, the environment speaks for itself and is magical but the transfers, ship, fabulous food (lots of it) and comfortable cabins helped make this an unforgettable trip during our trip to NZ. Gillrj, Via TripAdvisor
We did a two night cruise on Doubtful Sound which was amazing. The food, staff, services were first class, and our cabin was just as fabulous as a hotel room. Beautiful crisp linen; fabulous shower and perfectly comfortable. I can't recommend this cruise highly enough, and everyone on board just loved their time on the water. The photographic opportunities were fantastic. This is an experience not to be missed. Blincs, Via TripAdvisor
We had gorgeous weather the entire cruise. We had magnificent views and sunsets on both evenings. Other travelers took kayaks out or went for a ride on smaller boats on Saturday. We stayed on board to relax, as we were recovering from hiking the Milford Track just prior to the cruise. Food was excellent, and we enjoyed the people we met on the cruise. We saw the pod of dolphins that lives in the Sound, and some seals. We enjoyed the educational talks in the after-dinner talks by the naturalist on board. We loved our room, it was very comfortable. Highly recommend!! T R, Via TripAdvisor
This was such a well organised, professionally run experience. All the staff were well trained, worked as a team, were friendly and so knowledgeable. The whole operation with all the transfers ran like clockwork. The accommodation was comfortable (we had a double ensuite cabin). Food and communal areas very good. The onboard naturalist kept up the commentary all the time we were sailing, making it so interesting. Scenery was stunning - would recommend this to anyone. Sue F, Via Trip Advisor

What is the difference between Milford and Doubtful Sounds?

overnight houseboat trip

Our places. Our experiences. Milford and Doubtful Sounds, NZ.

Milford Sound at the mountainous north end of Fiordland National Park is the classic fiord - a deep water inlet between steep sided high mountains.  Milford Sound is a middle-sized fiord at around 13 kms in length and it is famous for its dramatic scenery, especially Mitre Peak.  This fiord is the most accessible of Fiordland National Park’s 14 fiords and it can be reached by bus, car or flight connections from Queenstown.

Doubtful Sound is located in the heart of Fiordland National Park where the mountains are still very impressive but not as high as Milford Sound.  Doubtful Sound is three times longer and  has a sea surface area roughly ten times larger than Milford Sound.  Its three arms are Hall, Crooked and First Arm.  It is famous for its wilderness scenery and wildlife sightings.  To get to Doubtful Sound visitors first take a launch trip across Lake Manapouri and drive over Wilmot Pass.

Visitors with enough time choose to visit both fiords as they have different characters.

What weather can I expect in Fiordland?

Fiordland’s weather is what gives the region its unique character. Rainfall is what makes Fiordland a land of lakes, rivers, streams, waterfalls and fiords. Visitors should always be prepared to enjoy some rainfall during their stay. It is recommended to bring sensible clothing for cool and wet weather to fully appreciate your stay.

The temperatures you can expect in the different seasons are as follows:

  • Summer  (December-February) 19-23 Celsius / 66 - 73 Fahrenheit
  • Autumn  (March-May) 8-18 Celsius / 46  - 64 Fahrenheit
  • Winter  (June-August) 5-9 Celsius /  41  - 48 Fahrenheit
  • Spring  (September-November) 10-19 Celsius  / 50   - 66 Fahrenheit

Is it worth going to Milford/Doubtful Sounds on a wet day?

Many say you have not seen Fiordland unless you have seen it in the rain.  When it rains in Fiordland the landscape is dramatic - rock faces stream with waterfalls, mist hangs around the tops of the mountains and rivers and streams rage.  From a dry comfortable vantage point on the bus or boat, this landscape is spectacular for sightseeing.

How much luggage can I take on my overnight cruise?

We recommend each passenger brings no more than a carry-on sized bag due to space restrictions in the cabins. For a list of what to bring please see the 'more info' section or your booking confirmation.

While we cannot guarantee you will see wildlife, sightings of fur seals are reasonably common in both Doubtful and Milford Sounds.  A pod of bottlenose dolphins resides in Doubtful Sound so you have a good chance of seeing these fascinating mammals, and in Milford Sound dolphins are occasional visitors.  In both sounds the rare Fiordland crested penguin can at times be observed.

Throughout Fiordland the fiords are officially mapped as sounds.  Strictly speaking, they should be called fiords.

A fiord is a glaciated valley - typically narrow and steep-sided - that has been flooded by the sea after the glacier’s retreat.  A sound, on the other hand, is a river valley flooded by the sea following a rise in sea levels or depression of the land, or a combination of both.

Is the Manapouri Underground Power Station accessible?

The Manapouri Underground Power Station visit is CLOSED indefinitely due to maintenance by operators Meridian Energy. We are not permitted to access the Power Station for tours during this time. The Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise tour will still operate without the visit underground to the Powerstation.

Online transactions/prices are conducted in what currency?

All prices and transactions on the RealNZ website are in New Zealand dollars (NZD).  This is specified on the Terms & Conditions page.

What happens if there is an emergency?

Our staff are trained to deal with incidents and in case of an emergency you should listen to their instructions. We have a portable defibrillator on each of our overnight cruise vessels (Milford Mariner, Milford Wanderer and Fiordland Navigator). In addition to this we also have portable defibrillators at the following locations: •    Milford Sound Visitor Terminal •    RealNZ Visitor Centre, Manapouri •    Cavern House (Te Anau Glowworm Caves) •    Colonel’s Homestead Restaurant, Walter Peak •    TSS Earnslaw Vintage Steamship •    Stewart Island Ferry (Bluff - Oban - Bluff)

Can my dietary requirements be accommodated?

Yes, dietary requirements can be catered for. Please provide detailed information regarding your dietary requirements when making a booking.

Will I be sharing a quad room?

There is a possibility that you might share a quad room with other customers, and it’s important to note these rooms are equipped with a curtain partition instead of a door. Please be aware of this configuration when booking and please contact us if you need further clarification.

Is the boat accessible for individuals with impaired mobility?

When we are informed in advance about guests with hindered mobility, we make every effort to mitigate the impact by assigning rooms in proximity to the main areas. However, it’s important to note that our vessels are not optimally equipped for potential needs. While we extend a warm welcome to individuals with impaired mobility, all our vessel’s doorways feature a sea sill, there are no ramps within the boat, and a flight of stairs separates rooms from the main saloon.

What is the best room type for families or children on an overnight cruise?

Our t win sleeping compartments provide the best privacy for travelling with your family and children. A twin room is a private room for two people with two single beds.

'Come and go as you please': Here's how overnight cruise stops work

overnight houseboat trip

If you've ever sailed on a cruise , you know there's no grace period from the ship leaving the dock. But on a recent cruise, it was nearly 5 p.m. when I was heading out on my first shore excursion.

I caught an evening show at San Francisco's magic speakeasy The Magic Patio and when I returned to the port, Princess Cruises' Discovery Princess ship was lit up for the evening, glowing in the Bay.

The sight was a rarity because we'd normally be sailing away by that time, our host explained over the loudspeaker on the bus. But that night, the ship served less as a means of transportation than a floating hotel during our two-day visit.

While many cruises stop only for a day, some itineraries include overnight stays that give guests more time to explore and see destinations from a new vantage point.

"One of the common gripes for cruising is you don't really get to experience the destination if you're only there for X number of hours," said Jared Feldman, owner of travel agency Jafeldma Travel. "The cruise lines' answer to that is, 'Well, let's stay overnight.'"

What are the benefits of overnight cruise stays?

For starters, travelers don't have to feel rushed to return to the ship before it leaves. "You're able to really experience what the port has to offer in terms of nightlife," Feldman said.

Tillie and Joseph L. James Jr., luxury travel advisers who co-own Tillie James Travel, said longer stays allow them to arrange unique experiences for their clients, like private museum tours or dinners at local restaurants. Cruise lines may offer nighttime excursions as well.

Some activities may be even better after dark, like perusing Christmas markets . "It's so beautiful to see them at night," said Tillie. "During the day, you can go walk through those, but during the nights, when everything's lit up and you smell all the food, it's just a wonderful experience."

Those kinds of stops are becoming easier to find, too, according to Feldman. He noted an uptick in itineraries featuring overnights over the past two or three years.

"It's a growing trend," he said.

Do I have to stay on the cruise ship during an overnight stay?

Not necessarily. Feldman said cruise ships typically leave the gangway open all night for guests. "You can come and go as you please," he said. "And if you want to go out and, let's say, party until 3 in the morning, you can do that and then come back."

You can sleep in without missing out too. Most ships also don't leave for their next destination until late afternoon or evening, giving passengers nearly a full second day in port.

On my cruise, knowing I had extra time in San Francisco, I didn't feel pressured to cram everything into one day. The ship offered a nice home base after the show, and I grabbed a quick bite to eat on the way back to my cabin.

What cruises have overnight stays?

Travelers are more likely to find overnights on itineraries that feature "some of your larger destinations where there's just so much to do, people want to get immersed," Feldman said, like Athens, Rome, or Southampton, England.

Looking for cruise deals? Here's why they may be harder to find

Some lines market their sailings with a particular focus on overnight stays, he added, such as Princess, Azamara, Silversea Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises . Longer itineraries, like world cruises that can sail for months at a time, may also feature more overnights as they have more time to fill.

And having even just one extra day can shift the hop-off, hop-on dynamic of a cruise. "You're like, 'Oh, I don't have to be back by any certain time. I don't have to be back until tomorrow,'" said Feldman. "So, it kind of changes your perspective of how you can approach a port."

In London, a Houseboat Used to Be the Affordable Option. Not Anymore.

With land-based home prices increasingly out of reach, more Londoners are taking to the water. But as the canals fill up, even this affordable living option is becoming less attainable.

A low-slung blue boat sits in the water in front of two beige houses.

By Ben West

When you walk along the towpaths lining London’s 100-mile network of canals, a life on the water can appear idyllic. The boats dotting the winding banks look impossibly charming, romantic, colorful. Even better, they’re cheap to acquire compared with buying a conventional land-based house or apartment in the city.

“It’s so peaceful here,” said David Ros, a freelance sound designer who has been living on the London waterways for 15 years. “I wake up in the morning and open the side door looking out over the river, and the ducks are waiting for me to feed them. It’s just a really nice way to live.”

Mr. Ros, 62, took to the water all those years ago after his marriage broke up and his mother fell ill with cancer. “At the end of that, I didn’t really have much money as I hadn’t been able to work for quite a while,” he said. “I just had enough to buy a boat, so I got one.”

As he spoke, a kingfisher flew by and the sun cascaded through the windows of his 43-foot-long Dutch barge. He bought his current houseboat about six years ago for £30,000 ($38,000). It was a “complete wreck,” he said, so he did extensive renovations. Dating from 1940, the barge has an open kitchen/saloon in the bow, a bathroom with a shower and toilet, and a double bedroom in the stern. It’s a nice setup, if a bit cramped. “The headroom is one of the main disadvantages,” he said.

Mr. Ros says he’ll never live on dry land again, as he prefers being “surrounded by nature.” But the reality is, he probably couldn’t afford a place he wanted, anyway. Home prices remain out of reach for many in London, with an average sale price of about 508,000 British pounds ($636,000), a 50 percent increase over the past 10 years. Meanwhile, a two-bedroom Dutch barge houseboat in the area will now run you around £190,000 ($238,000).

The option is almost too appealing — a new wave of residential boaters is stretching London’s canal support system past its limits. “It’s changed dramatically in the last few years,” Mr. Ros said. “There’s probably three times the number of boats, four times the number of boats than there were 10 years ago. And the demographic has changed; there are a lot more young people.”

Boaters have been living on Britain’s canals since the industrial revolution. But according to the Canal & River Trust, which looks after the nation’s waterways system, the number of residential boats in London has ballooned by 86 percent over the past decade, to more than 4,000. Boats without home moorings — that is, a legal place to stay put — have more than tripled.

“I think it is fair to say that the large increase in people living on boats in the capital is driven by the housing crisis and cost of living in London,” said Jonathan Ludford, the national communications manager for the Canal & River Trust.

With all the new boats on the water, even this affordable living option is becoming less attainable. Mr. Ros’s winter coal supply costs £22 ($29) per bag, and he needs at least 20 bags for the season. Prices for diesel and gas are also up about 50 percent, and the basic price of a boat license is rising.

Even so, the Canal & River Trust is not taking action to limit the number of boats, said Fran Read, the organization’s national press officer. “There is plenty of room, even in hot spots like London, where boat numbers are more concentrated,” Ms. Read said. “But there is a finite amount of canal, with some places very busy already. So if a boater doesn’t have a permanent mooring, they may not be able to find a mooring space just where they’d like.”

Residential boaters in London have two options: One is a permanent mooring, maybe in a marina or along the towpath, with an electric hookup for everyday functions. In inner London, permanent moorings are just about at capacity. The other option, more affordable but less stable, is to “continuously cruise,” whereby the boat has to move into what is essentially a parking spot at least every 14 days.

To ease congestion, the Trust is cracking down on rogue mariners. “If you don’t have a mooring, they move you on, just like a parking attendant,” said Mr. Ros, who has a permanent mooring for around £7,000 ($8,800) a year — a lot less than the typical amount in the area. “They have these people on bicycles controlling each area, logging how long each boat is there. You get fined £25 a day if you overstay.”

Ms. Read confirmed that boat living in London can be “considerably cheaper” than living on land, though it comes with unique challenges and isn’t for everyone. “We support any boater who is struggling wherever possible,” she said, “including directing them toward benefits that are often available for those living afloat on low incomes.”

Boaters on residential moorings can claim housing benefits the same as land-based residents. And the Canal & River Trust lobbied for boaters without home moorings to be included in the government’s Energy Support Scheme last year.

Mark Knightley, 41, and his partner, Tessa Roberts, 37, bought their first London houseboat about eight years ago after realizing that it was their best chance of living together.

“We were renting two separate places, living miles apart,” Mr. Knightley said. “And I’m an actor, while Tessa is a researcher, so we don’t have a lot of money. And the cheapest way of living together was to buy a boat.”

For five years, the couple lived on the 36-foot-long narrow boat in Hackney, east London, which they bought for about £35,000 ($45,000). “It had a bed that would fold out every night, and the floor space was about two square feet,” Mr. Knightley said. “But it was on a beautiful marina on the River Lea.”

Three years ago, shortly before their daughter was born, the couple upgraded to a 70-foot-long Dutch barge with a permanent mooring at South Dock Marina, by the Thames in Rotherhithe, southeast London, for around £200,000.

Mr. Knightley glowed about the community around them — “like nothing that we’d find anywhere else in London,” he said. “There’s a lot of creative people, and loads of history with the dock and the boats that are here.”

Still, it’s a schlep to the supermarket, and ordering food gets complicated when delivery drivers don’t understand your address. And of course, raising a child on a barge comes with its own challenges. In the winter, power outages are a problem, “which can be scary for a young child when she’s in the bath and we’re suddenly plunged into pitch-black darkness,” Mr. Knightley said.

“People assume we must be terrified about her safety all the time because of the water,” Ms. Roberts said. “But I think it’s the same as living near a road: You teach them to be careful around it and you don’t leave them unsupervised outside.”

But the couple’s biggest challenge recently has been the spike in costs. Boat license fees rose by 4 percent beginning in April 2022, and the Canal & River Trust has also phased in additional pricing bands for boats wider than 7-foot-1. Fees for boats more than 10-foot-7 wide are subject to an additional 5 percent.

Houseboats in the River Trust’s jurisdiction require a Boat Safety Scheme certificate, which must be renewed every four years. And for boaters with a permanent mooring, there are mooring fees, paid monthly or annually to the marina owners; the fee that Ms. Roberts and Mr. Knightley pay rose by 11 percent this year, to £10,000 ($12,500).

“The maintenance costs are large when the size of the boat goes up,” Mr. Knightley said. “For our barge it cost £13,000, although the work done to make it legally safe will probably last 10 years. The last time this boat came out of the water, they had to extensively replace the steel, and it cost £40,000. You should also do an engine service every five years or so.”

In their area of London, higher fees are part of a plan by the Southwark borough council to redevelop the marina, at a cost of £6 million. The goal is to address health and safety issues on the water and on the docks, create new wash facilities and a cafe, and replace old workshops that are currently in shipping containers with new purpose-built ones.

The plan, said Catherine Rose, a Southwark Council member for neighborhoods, leisure and parks, “will address urgent health and safety issues to help maintain a working marina and enhance the boat yard environment.”

To help ease the transition, she said, the council is offering a discount for boat-repair shops and staggering the rent increase over a three-year period for all existing boatyard businesses.

But boaters like Mr. Knightley and Ms. Roberts see the move as a way to replace lower-income boaters with more commercial interests. “There’s a lot of concern at the moment with the community here about how the council are essentially trying to force people out,” Mr. Knightley said. “The housing situation in London is horrendous anyway; they’re just making it even worse.”

The boaters tend to agree, though, that safety and security are urgent matters. The Metropolitan Police Service does not keep separate data on water crimes, but boaters say that crime at marinas, and even on boats, has long been a problem.

“I’d never live on a boat again,” said Janusz Konarski, 56, who did just that in London’s Little Venice from 1983 to 1995, before returning to land. “I didn’t ever feel secure. There was a bloke trying to steal my bike. Then we had a glue sniffer undoing the moorings because he was mentally ill. He pulled a knife on me, although the police got him.”

These days, Mr. Ros said, “it feels like there’s a lot of crime around. There’s a lot more breaking in, there’s a lot more general thievery going on. It’s desperate times here, and boats are an easy target.”

And earlier version of this article misidentified a London waterway. It is the River Lea, not Lee.
