Trail Mix Bar Ideas for a Totally Easy Party

Summer entertaining just got easier! This trail mix bar is easy to set up and fun to enjoy, perfect for family nights or grown-up get-togethers.

mix tour bar

We're obsessed with how versatile this trail mix bar idea can be. Whatever the occasion—a family movie night , backyard barbecue, or outdoor summer party —a trail mix bar makes the perfect food set-up. Plus, it's so easy! Just grab a few bowls, your favorite goodies, and a few simple decorations to get started.

Use These Trail Mix Party Ideas for a Fun Celebration

Creating the perfect trail mix doesn't have to involve a lot of spices or baking. Instead of using seasoning to flavor your trail mix, try flavored nuts. These flavored almonds add bold flavors to any mix—which means less prep time for you! Let guests make their own mixes, or use our yummy trail mix recipes to create the perfect mix of goodies.

Step 1: Grab the Goodies

The first step in a trail mix bar idea is, of course, the trail mix. Since this is a DIY bar, there are no rules or limits to what you can add—which can be overwhelming. We recommend starting with five main groups: nuts, seeds, grains, dried fruit , and fun treats. Seeds like pepitas and sunflower seeds are great mix-ins, and foods like granola, pretzels, and cereals are perfect grain-based snacks.

The fun stuff category is a great way to customize the bar for whatever kind of party you're having. We used a variety of chocolate chips, rainbow candies, and mini marshmallows for a bright and kid-ready bar.

Step 2: Set Up the Bar

Once you've planned the food elements, you'll need a place to display them. Consider setting up your trail mix bar on a buffet-style table, counter, or other easily accessible area. You'll need space for several small bowls, trays, and display items. We used a collection of small bowls and dishes scattered on serving trays and on top of a cake stand (to provide some height to our display).

Since we wanted to incorporate bright candies into our trail mix bar, we carried those colors through the display with a few brightly colored and patterned dishes. Add a collection of empty jars, cups, or bowls for guests to create their mixes, and remember the serving spoons!

Step 3: Decorate

Once the food and layout are complete, it's time to decorate your display. Use our set of free printables to add a large framed sign and matching food group signs to your trail mix bar area. Instead of labeling each food, we like creating stations for each food group and labeling each with "nuts" or "grains." Consider using food garnishes as accents, too. Herbs like rosemary are a pretty decoration on a few of our food trays.

Trail Mix Bar Ideas for Flavorful Combinations

Fruit + nut trail mix.

Print out our free recipe cards for guests to use as inspiration. This bright and tasty trail mix bar idea is perfect for fruit lovers. We started with dried apricots , dried cherries, and dried blueberries and added popcorn , pepitas, and dark chocolate for a fruity and slightly salty mix. We finished this mix with rosemary and sea salt almonds for a delicious taste of savory to the mix.

Garlic + Herb Trail Mix

Craft a delicious savory trail mix bar idea with the help of garlic-flavored almonds. The garlic flavor is yummy, with salty popcorn, pretzels, and pepitas over a base of plain cereal. This unexpected flavor combination will have guests coming back for seconds!

Sweet + Salty Trail Mix

Our sweet and salty recipe is a delicious classic trail mix. We added salted almonds, dried cherries, coconut flakes , and chocolate chips to a cereal base. The sweetness of the fruit and chocolate pairs perfectly with the salted almonds to create a delicious sweet and salty snack.

Create Your Own Trail Mix Bar Idea

Have guests write out their mixes on the menu cards, letting everyone create their own unique trail mix bar idea! If you end up with leftover trail mix after the party, add caramel for a delicious, sweet snack!

Larabar is releasing three new Trail Mix bars in time for spring. Each of the items features a crunchy-chewy texture, and three flavors are available:

  • Peanut Butter & Jelly: featuring a flavor throwback to classic PB&J sandwiches, this bar is made with just five ingredients—almonds, walnuts, peanut butter, cherries, and raisin
  • Dark Chocolate Peanut: the snack includes dark chocolate, peanut butter, almonds, and walnuts
  • Chocolate Coconut Macaroon: the bar is composed of coconut, almonds, walnuts, chocolate chips, and peanut butter

According to the producer, these are the first bars in the Larabar portfolio to incorporate regenerative almonds as part of the brand’s commitment to advancing sustainable and regenerative practices in its supply chain. It sourced 80,000 pounds of regenerative almonds for the Trail Mix Bars and plans to expand to as many as 250,000 pounds of regenerative almonds.

The Trail Mix bars will roll out to retailers nationwide in June for an MSRP of $9.09 for a six-count box.

Reloop Mixtour Controller Review

Phil morse | founder & tutor, the lowdown.

The smallest and most portable hardware controller yet for Algoriddim’s djay 2 and djay Pro platforms, this is best suited for use with iOS or Android tablets. At this price it offers good value as it includes an audio interface and pro quality controls, but you’ll need to factor in the price of a tablet stand too.

Video Review

First impressions / setting up.

It is a pro-feeling controller. It’s not metal cased, but it’s sturdy plastic with an aluminium connection panel at the rear, and the knobs are properly bolted to the chassis. It has a bit of weight to it, and all the controls are full sized. It also has onboard VU metering, which can be switched between PFL and master, for accurate gain staging; again, a pro feature. It is powered, so it can charge your iOS/Android device at the same time as you DJing, and that ensures that both backlit controls and the volume output from the four-out sound card are sufficient.

The picture on the box shows the unit being used with an iPad, which is stood on a Reloop Tablet Stand right to the rear of it, but be forewarned that no tablet stand is provided with it, so you’ll have to come up with your own solution for that. Reloop’s own Modular Stand is one of my favourites for this, as it raises the tablet a bit, and is more “horizontal” than “vertical”, making it sturdier when you’re performing using the touchscreen.

This last point is important, because what we have here is not a full controller like the Reloop Beatpad 2 , for instance; it’s essentially the mixer section with library and basic transport controls thrown in, so you’re still going to be using your touchscreen should you want to move past the sync button and take manual control over your decks, or use the sampler, pads, etc.

As mentioned, the unit works with djay Pro on the Mac as well as with iOS/Android, but for the reason I just mentioned (that it makes more sense with iOS, due to touchscreen controls filling in the gaps on the hardware, not to mention it can only control two decks of the four in djay Pro), we strongly think it’s better suited to tablet and iPhone use, so that’s how we review it here.

Anyway, setting it up is a cinch: You wire it all in, launch the software, and turn it on, and it’s recognised immediately. As it has a built in audio interface, you’re meant to connect your own speakers to the RCA outs on the back, as well as your headphones via the 1/8″ socket on the front, and within djay 2 the audio section doesn’t actually let you default back to iOS sound, so you can’t plug this in and DJ using your iPad’s speakers should you want to: it really is meant to be the heart of a set-up with proper speakers.

The controls all feel great, and so once you’ve worked out how best to position your iOS or Android device for comfortable DJing, it is a huge step up from DJing with just the touchscreen. It’s nice to have proper gain controls for each of the channels, which aligned with the real VU meters gives you a pro level of control.

It’s great to have big fat one-knob filters, and as one of Algoriddim’s things is to give you filter/FX combos, it’s also nice to see that implemented here. By pressing the little FX button beside each filter knob, you can add a choice of effect to the filter knob alongside the filtering, and by holding down the shift button and repeatedly pressing the FX button, you can choose the effect you want to add. Some nice combos are easy to discover.

Selecting tracks to play from your library is fun with the big library knob, especially when you use it to scroll through artwork. There are nice big “load” buttons for each deck, but by pressing Shift and the headphone cue button for a given deck, you can preview the currently highlighted library track in your headphones without actually loading it, which is useful.

As of course all the djay apps have Spotify integration (note: you’ll need Spotify Premium to get this working), you have potentially got access to millions of tracks here, and usefully, if you hold down the Shift button and tap either of the Load buttons, it lets you quickly jump through the media library tabs, making finding and selecting the next tune easy and fun.

How cueing and beatmatching works

While there is absolutely no pitch controlling, or nudging (I think the addition of CD deck-style nudge buttons would have been nice), you are tied to the Sync button for beatmixing unless you revert to the onscreen controls. Apart from that you do get pretty good control over the music you’re playing: There’s Play/Pause per deck, the aforementioned Sync of course, but also by tapping the small “C” button above the four vertically laid-out transport buttons, you turn the buttons for that deck into four cues, set by touching them, erased by touching them with Shift held. Holding Shift and touching the Play button returns you to the start of the playing track. There is also a useful “seek” function for track scrubbing, using Shift and the main library select knob.

There is also basic auto-looping: by tapping one of the two Loop buttons you turn the loop on to whatever beat/bar length it’s currently set to, and then by pressing Shift and tapping the corresponding channel’s Loop or Sync buttons you can halve or double the loop length.

By the way, this is a class compliant controller, so if you did want to push it into service with Virtual DJ or Traktor , for instance, you could do so; Reloop says it will offer mappings and drivers on the company website for other used outside of Algoriddim’s software, including ASIO drivers should you want to use it with a PC. As is, you get every necessary lead in the box for connecting to all modern hardware. (The power adaptor comes with switchable plugs to plug in in the UK, EU and USA, too.)

It’s certainly best used with iOS/Android than the Mac version of the djay platform, for reasons mentioned previously; for djay Pro on a Mac, you’re better off using a controller with jogwheels and pads, frankly. Were this a controller like, for instance, the Akai Pro AMX , that has a hardware mixer built in and so can work at the heart of a DVS system, then yes it might be good with djay Pro, with two record decks each side; but djay Pro itself has no DVS feature, so no surprises that Reloop stuck to it being a software mixer. Its closest cousin out there is the Traktor Kontrol Z1 , which offers a similar feature-set but for Traktor DJ, the iOS version of that particular platform, although it doens’t come with a power adaptor like this one.

The Mixtour is also best used for playing electronic music, which if course is going to be fine for most of its intended audience, because there’s no manual pitch adjusting at all from the hardware, so if you want to play varying BPM music, you’re better off with a controller with jogwheels. That said, it does have rudimentary beatgrid adjustment (you can change the position of the downbeat by holding Shift and tapping Cue on the one beat, but that’s it for beatgridding from the unit).

So with iOS/Android and playing steady BPMed music, it’s a nice controller to use. It is highly portable, but gives you a whole lot more “real DJing” feel than the touchscreen alone, and of course doubles up as a charger for the device, and more importantly, gives you a high quality DJ audio interface too, for proper full volume stereo cueing and output.

For impromptu hotel room DJ sets, parties at home, and practising just about anywhere, it is a surprisingly pro-featured unit, with enough of the controls experienced DJs would look for on any gear to make such DJs feel right at home on it (the VUs and gain staging especially are welcome). Its form factor also makes it easy to slot in to the DJ booth should you be asked to play unexpectedly alongside a “grown up” set-up, and the sound card is good enough sounding for the hardware to not let you down in such situations, too.

While it’s not going to be for every iOS DJ (if you’re buying a first controller for djay, we still think you can’t beat the Beatpad 2), it ticks a box for certain use cases, especially at an aggressive price of £119 / $199 / €149. If that’s something that interests you, you’ll like it.

Creative and Fun Wedding Ideas Made Simple Creative and Fun Wedding Ideas Made Simple

How-to: create a trail mix bar at your wedding.

January 24, 2014

A trail mix bar is definitely a popular wedding trend nowadays for casual, rustic-themed receptions in the summer or fall. Not only is it great having guests gather around and choose their treats, but as the hosts, you simply set out your favorite nuts, oats, dried fruits and berries, maybe even some candies and marshmallows. No cooking or baking required! Simply some great ideas like these for putting your own trail mix buffet together—easily and attractively! (* this post contains affiliate links )

Simple Ways to Plan a Trail Mix Bar

1 – Glam up your trail mix bar station . One approach you could take would be to go fancy! Use glass apothecary jars, mini topiaries, and antique style candelabra combined with wood slabs and a kraft paper banner—and it works!

2 – Use quaint containers . Much of the charm of your bar will come from the serveware you prepare. Consider having mason jars , vintage-style tea tins and bread boxes. Just add little labels on sticks to help guests make their choices!

3 – Set out a tempting selection of ingredients . Offer an eye-catching array of ingredients to ‘mix’! Consider items that are sweet, savory, and salty. Some examples include: candies like chocolate chips, M&Ms, jelly beans; nuts like cashews, peanuts, and almonds; sunflower seeds, mini marshmallows, and pretzels. You can also opt for some spicy choices that are flavored with cajun, wasabi, sriracha, and hot bbq sauce .

4 – Bring in those multi-purpose cylinder vases . Those amazingly versatile glass cylinders that can act as vases, planters, candle holders, and yes even food servers. Simply attach various ingredient labels to the vases and tie them with jute twine (see below) .

5 – Help guests out with signs . Just in case guests wonder what all those yummy munchies are…and what to do with them, display helpful signs and labels. You could go with a bunting-style banner, individual tent cards, or an all-in-one kraft paper sheet (see below) !

6 – Include rustic and natural touches . Since your theme and venue are likely to be laid-back and rustic, make use of woodsy elements like wood chips and woven country baskets. Other options would be wood slabs, twigs, berries, bunches of wheat, acorns, pine cones, and colorful wildflowers.

7 – Prepare take-home containers . Take your pick from bottles, mini baskets, woven boxes, and a whole slew of pouches for guests to bring their goodies home in. [ See our post on trail mix packaging options .] A great idea, though, would be muslin drawstring bags (see below) that you can personalize with stamped designs, your monogram, or a fun message!

8 – Provide serving scoops such as stainless steel ice cream scoops that come in a variety of sizes. Other creative ideas include measuring cups, tea cups, decorative paper cups, and oversized spoons.

9 – Create a cozy at-home look . Want a more casual look for your table? You can always go for a more hand-crafted vibe—especially for an at-home wedding.

Trail Mix Bar Glass Containers

Amazon finds like these glass containers and jars make buying in bulk a practical option. These are great for creating a spread using 3-4 receptables. Add your own labels and banners to suit the theme or style of your wedding.

DIY Birthday Party: Make Your Own Trail Mix Bar

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I’ll receive a commission if you purchase through my links, at no extra cost to you. Please read full disclosure for more information.

My kids’ birthdays are two years and two days apart. Therefore, one time a year, I’m super stressed to get their parties perfect. If you have read some of my previous posts, you know that I love their birthday parties because of all of the wonderful memories we create.

And no, I do not give them a joint birthday party.

It isn’t their fault I had them days apart. They each deserve their own party, so that’s what I do. Every. Single. Year. No exceptions.

However, instead of doing them two weekends in a row, we do them on Saturday and then the next one on Sunday.

It works best for us and for our family members that come in from out of town. Not to mention, only having to make sure the house is clean for one weekend is definitely a plus. I mean, we do have a two year old and a four year old. Our house is NEVER clean.

This year, I decided I didn’t want to spend too much money, and wanted to create the perfect parties by being as efficient as possible. Because of this, I chose to do a “Make your own trail mix bar.” Since my son had a construction truck themed birthday , we gave it the name of “Gravel Mix” to go along with the theme.

It was so easy to create and the guests loved it! This was in addition our “Build A Burger Bar.” The trail mix was a nice little complement to a fatty burger!

Trail Mix Ingredients:

  • Marshmallows
  • Banana chips
  • Chocolate chips
  • Peanut M&Ms

Then, place your ingredients out using mini plastic clear bowls . The thing I love most about trail mix is that you can add or take away any of the ingredients to fit your style or preferences.

Now that you’ve set out the supplies, all you need to do is let guests place their desired ingredients into their won bowls.  What a fun make your own trail mix bar!

Create Your Own Trail Mix Bar

Sophie and Freda create a healthy alternative to a candy bar - a trail mix bar. Perfect for Western or outdoor themed events.

Recently we helped facilitate a Western Themed School Mixer.  The idea was to combine classes from a local all-boys and all-girls school. This would give the families of the 2020 graduates a chance to mingle and get to know one another.  There was a mechanical bull, laser tag shoot out at the OK Corral, a western-themed crafting corner, and family photos in the “poke”.

One of the big hits of the day was our “Happy Trails” trail mix bar.

mix tour bar

Guests were encouraged to belly up to the bar, where they filled hand-stamped brown paper bags with their own tasty treats for the long trek home.

mix tour bar

Allergies being what they are, we figured we should shy away from nuts altogether. Instead we focused on granola, fruit, and seeds.

mix tour bar

Freda went to a local organic grocery and purchased bulk items ranging from candied ginger to dried apples.  To properly identify everything I printed up cute little chalkboard labels which we mounted on coffee stir sticks.

mix tour bar

To make sure we had everything properly labeled and placed in the right plot of goodies, Freda made us a “cheat sheet” with a sample of each morsel taped to a page listing the contents.  I was particularly taken by this sheet...and had to share it with you all.  I don’t know why, but the sight of those different items scotch taped to the page made me giggle every time I laid eyes on it.

mix tour bar

Here’s a list of the items we supplied on our bar - it’s a mixture of sweet, hot, salty, crunchy, and savory items that allowed folks to mix up a variety of combinations.

coconut "smiles"

dried date pieces

dried peach slices

banana chips

dried sliced pears

mixed dried fruit

dried apple rings

dried persimmons

dried cranberries

sultana raisins

whole cranberries

roasted green peas

wasabi soybeans

roasted pumpkin seeds

roasted sunflower seeds

sesame sticks

cajun hot sesame sticks

rice crackers

yogurt covered raisins

dark chocolate covered raisins

white chocolate chips

chocolate chips

cherry vanilla granola

pumpkin flax granola

crystalized ginger

The nice thing about this bar was that it was a fun alternative to a candy bar.  Sure, there were some sweet items, but for the most part the treats were pretty darn healthy.  Next time you are considering a tasty giveaway for your guests, maybe saddle up your horse and head on over to the health food store instead of the chocolate factory.

Tell ‘em Trigger sent ya.

Officials: Man arrested for allegedly decapitating dog he just adopted, dumping it in park

Police in Florida said they arrested a man who bought a dog and decapitated it.

ST> PETERSBURG, Fla. (TMX) -- A Florida man was arrested this week after a dog he adopted just days earlier was found decapitated and wrapped in a plastic bag in park, authorities said.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a report of a deceased dog wrapped in a plastic bag in the area of East Beach at Fort Desoto Park, south of St. Petersburg on Mullet Key, at around 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

Deputies arrived to find “a male bulldog mix with its head decapitated, floating in the mangroves.”

The dog was implanted with a microchip, which was scanned by Pinellas County Animal Services, revealing him to be a 4-year-old named Dexter. The dog had been adopted from Pinellas County Animal Services just days earlier, on May 10, by 66-year-old Domingo R. Rodriguez.

Deputies visited Rodriguez’s residence, where he admitted adopting Dexter and said he must have run away overnight on May 10. Rodriguez also admitted to traveling to Fort Desoto Park on May 11, however, and gave investigators “several inconsistent statements.”

Rodriguez was arrested and charged with one count of animal cruelty and one count of disposal of bodies of dead animals.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing.

How to Make Sour Mix

An essential mixer for cocktails and a great shortcut in the bar

mix tour bar

Sweet and sour mix goes by a few names, including sour mix, bar mix, and sometimes simply lemon sour or lime sour. It is a nonalcoholic drink mixer that's useful in the bar and found in many cocktail recipes. Margaritas  and other tropical or sour drinks use it on occasion, and it forms the base for homemade lemon-lime soda and lemonade. Additionally, it's a convenient substitute for syrup and citrus juice when a recipe calls for the separate ingredients. Sour mix is also incredibly easy to make from scratch, simultaneously saving money and creating fresher tasting drinks.

What Is Sour Mix?

Sour mix is a simple syrup  flavored with sour citrus fruit. It's often a combination of lemon and lime juices, though it can be made with either alone. With this single ingredient, you can add both sweet and sour elements to a variety of drinks.

Sour mix also tends to be a little thinner than standard simple syrup. Though you can adjust the recipe, it's typically made with a 3:1 ratio of liquid (water and juice) to sugar.

While you can purchase sour mix at many liquor stores, the options are typically not great. Most are either too sweet or too sour and it's not uncommon for them to include artificial flavors and sweeteners. As with almost every drink mixer, fresh is best and you'll find that a housemade sour mix produces  better tasting cocktails .

Making your own sour mix is also cost-efficient. You can make as little or as much as you need and the raw ingredients are inexpensive. Generally, a batch of fresh sour costs less than $2 to make and takes no more than 20 minutes of your time. Considering all the benefits, there really is no reason to avoid this simple recipe!

Watch Now: Two Simple Ways to Make Sour Mix

Sweet and sour mix recipe.

There are a few ways to make a fresh sour mix. They all begin with simple syrup , which is nothing more than sugar and water. These recipes can be adapted to suit your personal taste or the drinks you're making at the moment. You can also double or triple them to create a larger batch.

  • Method 1: Make simple syrup by combining 1 cup each of sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 5 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in 1 cup each fresh lemon juice and lime juice. Allow it to cool before bottling. Store it in the refrigerator.
  • Method 2:  Combine 1 cup each of sugar and water in a  cocktail shaker  or a bottle with a tight seal. Shake until the sugar is dissolved (it takes some time and effort) to create a simple syrup. Add 1 cup each of lemon and lime juices, bottle, and refrigerate.
  • Method 3:  Combine one part of pre-made simple syrup with one part lemon or lime juice (or equal parts of the two fruits). This makes a great last-minute sour mix if you already have the syrup in stock. It's also convenient when making a large batch of simple syrup because you can divide it to create sour mix at the same time.

No matter which method you choose, you can adjust the lemon and lime juice ratio to fit your specific taste. Some people prefer 1 cup lemon to 3/4 cup lime for general use.

You can also make it with either lemon or lime juice exclusively by using 2 cups (or parts) of either juice. For instance, you might want to use a lime sour mix in a frozen lime margarita to enhance that fruit's flavor. In a similar fashion, the  cable car recipe specifically calls for fresh lemon sour.

  • Homemade sour mix should be bottled in a well-sealed container and stored in the refrigerator. Its shelf life is two to three weeks.
  • The best sour mix uses fresh citrus juice . This adds to the natural taste and many bottled lime and lemon juices are already sweetened. If you use one that is, slightly reduce the sugar when making the sour.
  • While lemon and lime are the standard citrus fruits used in a sour, any citrus juice will work. Consider making a grapefruit sour or an orange sour, or try less common citrus fruits like blood oranges, key limes, pomelos, and tangerines.

Many classic cocktails call for  egg whites  because it gives the finished drink a luscious, foamy texture when shaken. If you're making a few rounds of a specific style of drink, such as the whiskey sour , you can add the egg white directly to your sour mix. When you're ready for a drink, you'd simply have to shake whiskey with your custom sour.

If you opt for this version of sour mix, make sure that your eggs are fresh. There is an easy water test that ensures you're not drinking raw eggs that are too old.

To make this sour mix, add one egg white for every 2 cups of sour mix after it has cooled completely. Shake very well until the egg is fully incorporated. Refrigerate it whenever you're not mixing drinks. The egg significantly reduces the syrup's shelf life and it should be used within a day or two.

Raw Egg Warning

Consuming raw and lightly-cooked eggs poses a risk for food-borne illness.

Using Sour Mix in Drinks

Once you have a sour mix, there are many fun ways to incorporate it into your drinks, both spiked and nonalcoholic. Naturally, you can use it in any cocktail recipe that calls for sour mix. These include old favorites like the Long Island iced tea  and apricot sour , as well as many margarita recipes, including the gummy bear margarita .

Use a sweet and sour mix to adjust any drink's flavor when you want to give it a spark of both sweet and sour flavors. For example, a splash of sour makes a livelier gin and tonic  and sweetens it just ever so slightly. Lime sour is particularly good with gin, while a lemon-lime sour is great with vodka soda drinks .

Sour mix is also a shortcut for cocktails that call for simple syrup and either lemon or lime juices separately. It's useful for many of the classic cocktails  that were developed before sour mix was widely used in the bar. For instance, you can replace the syrup and lemon juice of the Tom Collins  with a single shot of sour mix. The New Orleans Fizz is another great example because the recipe uses both lemon and lime juices along with syrup. If you do this substitution, you may have to use more or less sour mix than the recipe calls for to obtain a balanced cocktail.

With a bottle of sour mix in the fridge, you can pour club soda over 1 or 2 ounces sour to create the freshest lemon-lime soda that rivals 7-Up or Sprite. Similarly, sour mix is essentially a concentrate for homemade lemonade . Add water to taste (typically 2 parts water to 1 part sour), and you have an instant glass of lemonade.

Alaskan alt-rockers Portugal. The Man bring their Knik tour to the Knit

Spokane is quite the distance from Wasilla, Alaska, but the Knitting Factory is actually one of the venues closer to home for popular alt-rock band Portugal. The Man as they embark on their “Knik Country Tour.”

Portugal. The Man originated in the south-central Alaska city as a couple of high school friends continuing to make music after the band they were originally members of broke up. They would soon move to Portland for more opportunities to record and tour. Their debut record “Waiter: ‘You Vultures!’ ” would come in 2006, and the rest is history.

Since their debut record, the band has released nine studio albums (including an impressive run of consecutive record releases from 2006-11) and signed to Atlantic Records in 2010.

In 2017, they released the now platinum-selling album “Woodstock.” The album featured songs like “Tidal Wave,” “Live in the Moment” and the smash hit “Feel It Still.” The late 2010’s classic has since gone 7x platinum, peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, spent 20 weeks on top of the Alternative Songs chart and gained the band a Grammy for “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.”

Most recently, the group released their ninth studio album “Chris Black Changed My Life” in mid-2023. The record features favorites such as “Summer of Luv” (featuring Unknown Mortal Orchestra) and the lead single “Dummy.”

Portugal. The Man has traveled the world and back, and the now Northwest-based band will keep a little closer to home when they perform at the Knitting Factory on Thursday.

'Luxury cruise ship' spotted on Spokane’s South Hill

The Gallery at Spokane is the area’s newest senior living community and among the most luxurious.

He’s on Beyoncé’s album. He has a No. 1 hit. Shaboozey’s moment is here.

The Woodbridge, Va., native is seeing success with his mix of country music and hip-hop at the same time that Beyoncé’s album fueled conversations about blending genres.

mix tour bar

Singer-songwriter Shaboozey knows you can never predict success in the music industry, but when he sat in his producer’s studio in November and worked on a sizzling new track about the joys of alcohol, a thought struck him: “This is gonna be my country No. 1.”

He uttered that thought into a voice memo as he wrapped up recording, and it was remarkably prescient: “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” a country-hip-hop drinking anthem that interpolates the 2004 smash “Tipsy” by rapper J-Kwon, started spiking on streaming services within days of its mid-April release. Two weeks later, it hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country chart, which measures streams, sales and radio play.

“My producer sent that [voice memo] to me yesterday. He was like, ‘Man, this is crazy, you said this at the end of the song,’” Shaboozey said in an interview. But he admitted that even with all that confidence, after about a decade of figuring out his path as a musician, he was still nervous about how the song would be received. “As an artist, you have these moments of doubt.”

For now, the doubts can subside — Shaboozey (born Collins Obinna Chibueze) is having the kind of month that only happens in most artists’ wildest dreams. The singer, who celebrated his 29th birthday last week, watched as the song busted out of the country chart’s confines and rocketed up the Billboard Hot 100. It currently sits at No. 5 behind Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift and Post Malone, and Tommy Richman. As if that wasn’t enough, at the end of March, Shaboozey appeared on not one but two tracks on Beyoncé’s country-themed album “Cowboy Carter” with “Sweet Honey Buckiin’” and “Spaghettii.”

Suddenly, he has more eyes on him than ever. And it is fortuitous timing, given that “Cowboy Carter” fueled conversations about how Black singers influenced country music and what it means when artists blur genre lines. “Spaghettii” also featured guest vocals by country legend Linda Martell, who kicks off the song by asking, “Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they?”

It’s a fitting question for Shaboozey, a Woodbridge, Va., native whose parents are Nigerian immigrants. He spent years experimenting with various sounds and production and mixing together cultures and aesthetics in his music. He was inspired by artists such as Chingy, Jennifer Lopez and Ja Rule, as well as Garth Brooks and Kenny Rogers, and the music of his Virginia roots (the home of superstars including Pharrell, Timbaland and Missy Elliott) is important to him. And now he’s witnessing firsthand that there appears to be quite a large audience for a blend of hip-hop and country.

“The universe works in mysterious ways,” Shaboozey said. He compared the last six weeks to the feeling of living inside a simulation. He went from people saying, “Who?” to his phone being a constant stream of messages from friends and strangers and famous musicians, some of whom want to collaborate. He recently performed “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” at the Stagecoach country music festival and saw thousands in the crowd screaming along, and hopes to carry the momentum forward when he releases a new album on May 31 called “Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going.”

“Country music is something that — you know, I’ve been in this space for a long time ... and I had my values about it and being accepted. And my outlook on it has always been different than other people,” Shaboozey said. “I’ve always been about integration and bringing people together and sharing stories, and just having a love for culture in all aspects and all walks of life and all people.”

“I’m definitely not a ‘divide’ type of person. I’m a ‘bring people together.’ So I think the song I made does that. It brings people together all over the world,” he continued. “So it’s cool to just see the universe responding and giving me a platform. Because I think my message is very pure and my message is something that I think the world needs to hear.”

His message is “togetherness,” he said. While he is aware it can be extremely challenging to bridge the divide in country music, where there’s a visible and much-discussed lack of diversity, he’s hopeful that there are some in Nashville who want to shake up the status quo . And now he’s part of the discourse — “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” made history when it hit No. 1 on Hot Country, taking the place of Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ’Em.” According to Billboard, it’s the first time that two Black artists have had back-to-back No. 1 songs on the chart.

“There are people here that are willing — that are open and do want to champion diversity and are championing change in the space,” Shaboozey said. “I mean, it seems like the hate is louder, but there are people here that have been super receptive.”

S haboozey’s music journey started on the internet, posting songs online after he graduated from Gar-Field High School (he was born in Fairfax but grew up in Woodbridge). The first one to make waves was trap breakout “Jeff Gordon,” bringing together the cultures of NASCAR and hip-hop, followed by tracks such as “Starfoxx,” “Winning Streak” and a Led Zeppelin tribute, “Robert Plant.”

“That was one of the first moments I realized I was very much like, on a mission,” Shaboozey said. “My thought process there was like, ‘I want to do something different.’”

He moved to Los Angeles, landed a deal with Republic Records, and released his first album, “Lady Wrangler,” in 2018. He got a song, “Start a Riot,” on the “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” soundtrack with rapper Duckwrth. A couple of years later, Nashville record executive Eric Hurt was talking to producer Sean Cook, who mentioned that he was working with Shaboozey. Hurt heard a demo recording of a song called “Tall Boy” and was blown away.

“My first thought was, ‘Man I don’t know where this fits, genre-wise, because it’s just a real blend. But this guy’s great,’” Hurt said. He remembered that famed Nashville songwriter-publisher Frank Rogers once told him that when he first heard bluegrass and country singer Chris Stapleton, he didn’t know exactly where he would fit in the format, but he knew he wanted to work with him — and if someone has that level of talent, all of the details will eventually work themselves out. “Honestly, Frank’s words echoed in my head the first time I heard Shaboozey.”

Hurt, vice president of A&R Publishing, Nashville, signed Shaboozey in 2021 to the independent label Empire, which was founded in San Francisco and had been expanding its Music City presence. Shaboozey, who put as much thought into visuals and storytelling music videos as he did with songwriting, started releasing a series of tracks that did big streaming numbers, such as “Tall Boy” and “Beverly Hills.” (Hurt started describing him to people as, “If Quentin Tarantino was a music producer and he wanted to produce a country album with a rap artist, it would be Shaboozey.”)

But the mainstream breakout moment hit as two moments collided, one being a call from Beyoncé’s team about Shaboozey contributing to songs on her upcoming album. Abas Pauti, Shaboozey’s co-manager, said he thinks that Beyoncé saw Shaboozey’s authenticity.

“I think he was ahead of his time in terms of what he was trying to do,” said Pauti, recalling how Shaboozey fused country in into his early songs and on his second album in 2022, “Cowboys Live Forever, Outlaws Never Die,” and leaning into the aesthetic with Wrangler apparel and Lucchese boots. “No one was doing the stuff he was doing as authentically. People would do it and it would come off as gimmicky or trying too hard, but for Shaboozey it sat just right for people.”

Then came “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” which Shaboozey wrote with his producers, Sean Cook and Nevin Sastry. (J-Kwon, who excitedly gave his permission for the interpolation, has a writing credit, along with his co-writers.) Shaboozey correctly guessed that combining nostalgia for early aughts hits along with classic country themes of booze would have great appeal, and now he has Nashville and the greater music world paying attention.

“Sweden. Ireland,” he said, checking off the names of places where fans have been dazzled by the song; he suspects that Irish listeners really enjoy the parts with the fiddle. “It just really has like a positive vibe to it. And I think the world needs a lot more positivity in music.”

Sak Pase, a longtime producer and vice president of A&R at Empire, said that he expects Shaboozey to be a “trailblazer” as more people discover his music and upcoming album. “He’s a songwriter at heart. I think there is a group of those in the country community that can appreciate it, but I anticipate that for a lot of people it is kind of hard to wrap their heads around it,” Pase said of the reaction. “Boozey’s disrupting every space he’s in, and country is no exception.”

Shaboozey also finds it gratifying that he’s carving out his own space in a genre that generally sticks to what has already worked and doesn’t like to deviate from tradition.

“For me to be able to sit in rooms and have conversations with those people without doing it the exact way everybody else does it, I think it’s inspiring to myself ... and to other artists as well that are doing their thing,” Shaboozey said. “Do it your way, you know what I mean? Stay true to yourself, and people will come around.”
