Mayo schools compete to win Big Travel Challenge 2022

TWENTY-TWO schools in Mayo have started February with a plan to change their travel habits for good.

An initiative of the Green-Schools Programme, the Big Travel Challenge 2022 asks school communities to focus on a mode of active travel like walking, cycling or scooting, and try to get as many people using that mode as possible over a period of ten school days.

The 22 Mayo schools are currently working on the Travel theme of the Green-Schools Programme with the challenge being promoted to schools previously awarded for the theme, a figure of 2269 nationally.

This year’s challenge is celebrating seven years of successfully encouraging more students to enjoy the benefits of getting to school on foot, on wheels or by public transport. Walking, cycling and scooting to school can be an opportunity to increase physical activity in the darker winter months, when time spent outdoors is reduced.

In 2020 St. Colmcille’s Senior National School, Kells, Co. Meath were named ‘Ireland’s Travel School of the Year’ following their efforts to increase the numbers of staff and students walking to school. The overall winning school in 2022 will receive a cash prize of €1,000 to be used for their Green-Schools Travel programme, with four runners up each receiving prize of €500.

In 2022 Green-Schools are looking for all schools big and small, rural and urban, primary, secondary and education centres that will take on the challenge of achieving a measurable increase in a sustainable mode of travel. Schools are asked to promote one mode and to record their results to form an application to win the Big Travel Challenge.

Which school will be the Travel School of the Year?

green schools travel challenge

Schools nationwide have kicked off the month of March with a plan to change their travel habits for good. An initiative of the Green-Schools Programme, the Big Travel Challenge 2024 asks school communities to focus on modes of active travel like walking, cycling or scooting, and try to get as many people using that mode as possible over a period of 10 school days. Schools can also promote a range of awareness initiatives in their school communities where active travel is less practical.

48 Cork schools are currently working on the Travel theme of the Green-Schools Programme with the challenge being awarded a Green Flag for Travel. To date, more than 2,400 schools nationwide have been awarded a Travel flag.

This year’s challenge is celebrating seven years of successfully encouraging more students to enjoy the benefits of getting to school on foot, on wheels or by public transport. Walking, cycling and scooting to school are all beneficial to students’ physical and mental health, and can help reduce emissions from the cars on the road.

The overall winning school in 2024 will receive a cash prize of €1,000 to be used for their Green-Schools Travel programme, with four runners up each receiving prize of €500.

In 2023 St Brigid’s National Junior School from Meath Hill were named ‘Ireland’s Travel School of the Year’ following their efforts to increase the numbers of staff and students walking to school.

This year, county winners are being sought to make up the short list for selection of the national winners. Schools that take the top prize for their county will win €200 towards a pizza party, ice cream van, or other celebration of their choice.

Green-Schools are looking for all schools big and small, rural and urban, primary, secondary and education centres that will take on the challenge of achieving a measurable increase in sustainable modes of travel, or even an increase of awareness around issues connected to sustainable travel. Schools are asked to promote their initiatives and record their results to form an application to win the Big Travel Challenge.

BREAKING A HABIT

Speaking about the change of the competition’s format this year, Ciara Norton, Green-Schools Travel Manager, said, “Every year our Big Travel Challenge asks school communities to try new habits out and break old ones. This year I’m delighted that we have added county level prizes, so schools across Ireland can aim towards being their county’s Travel School of the Year. I can’t wait to see who wins in each county and look forward to a full two weeks of creativity and activity ahead!”

Green Schools Travel Awards St Marks

Tallaght school St Mark’s Junior National School was named one of Ireland’s Travel Schools of the Year (Walking Mode) at a ceremony in Dublin on recently. An Taisce Green-Schools presented the school with their award at the event honouring the winners of this year’s Green-Schools BIG Travel Challenge 2023 in Haughton House of Dublin Zoo. Eleven other schools were also awarded on the day for their efforts promoting sustainable and active travel modes to school.

During February schools undertook the Big Travel Challenge, which asked them to concentrate on one sustainable transport mode for two weeks to see if they could achieve real, lasting change in the travel behaviour of their staff and students. The Challenge is an initiative of the Green-Schools Travel theme, which is supported by the NTA and the Department of Transport.

St Mark’s, a school of just under 500 pupils, excelled and embraced the challenge. They concentrated on encouraging students to walk to school, and saw the number of students opting to travel to school on foot nearly double over the two week period. Students from the school’s committee held three big events to keep up momentum throughout the challenge, including a Sock Parade, Be Green-Be Seen walk and Superhero day of walking.

Congratulating  St Mark’s and the other awarded schools on their achievements, Green-Schools Travel Manager Ciara Norton said: “My team and I have been so inspired by the many ways schools approached the Big Travel Challenge this year. The winning schools created incredible change in a short period of time, showing the desire among young people to travel to school independently, actively and in a mode that is mindful of our climate and local environment. Well done to all!”

East Mayo school, Tooreen National School was named the Northwestern Region’s Travel School of the Year at a ceremony in Dublin on Thursday.

An Taisce Green-Schools presented the school with their award at the event honouring the winners of this year’s Green-Schools Big Travel Challenge 2024 in Haughton House of Dublin Zoo. Four other schools were also awarded on the day for their efforts promoting sustainable and active travel modes to school.

Schools took on the Big Travel Challenge from March 4 to 15, during which they were asked to concentrate on one or more sustainable transport modes for two weeks to see if they could achieve real, lasting change in the travel behaviour of their staff and students. The Challenge is an initiative of the Green-Schools Travel theme, which is supported by the NTA and the Department of Transport.

Tooreen NS, a school of 114 pupils near Ballyhaunis excelled and embraced the challenge by promoting multiple forms of sustainable travel, such as walking/wheeling, cycling or carpooling, to suit different members of the school community, with a main focus on Park n Stride to reduce the number of cars idling at the school gate.

The initiative was such a success that the school saw their number of families leaving the car behind nearly double from day one to day ten.

Congratulating Tooreen NS and the other awarded schools on their achievements, An Taisce Education Unit Director Cathy Baxter said: “It's so uplifting to see such enthusiasm and creativity in making the journey to school sustainable! Initiatives like these, as part of Green-Schools Travel programme, are so important in creating real sustainable behaviour change and are testament to the work of the students, teachers and whole school community, as well as our partnerships with Local Authorities, the National Transport Authority and Department of Transport.”

The top schools from each county were awarded for their part in promoting green travel modes to school as part of the BIG Travel Challenge, with a regional winner chosen from them. The Staffroom Challenge was back by popular demand as well, extending the competition to school teachers and staff to travel more sustainably, and get creative doing so.

Green Schools Big Travel Challenge

Why are green schools important, what are the benefits of a green school, how can schools make the switch to being green, what are some simple ways to make schools more green, what are some of the challenges faced by green schools, how can we overcome these challenges, what are the best practices for green schools, how can we promote green schools, what is the future of green schools, how can we make sure that all schools are green.

The Green Schools Big Travel Challenge is a competition for schools across the country to see who can reduce their carbon footprint the most.

Checkout this video:

Watch this video on YouTube

Green schools are important because they promote student health and well-being, as well as reduce environmental impact. In order to achieve these goals, green schools often incorporate features such as natural light and ventilation, energy-efficient lighting and appliances, water conservation fixtures, and locally sourced materials. Additionally, many green schools have implemented recycling and composting programs to further reduce their environmental footprint.

There are many benefits to having a green school. A green school is one that is environmentally friendly and focuses on sustainability. These schools often have energy-efficient buildings, use recycled materials, and have gardens and parks. Green schools often teach students about environmental issues and how to be more sustainable.

Some of the benefits of having a Green school include:

1. improved student health 2. improved student achievement 3. reduced absenteeism 4. reduced costs for the school district 5. increased community engagement

It’s clear that schools need to make some changes in order to be more environmentally friendly, but how can they make the switch? Here are some ideas:

-Switch to energy-efficient lighting: This can be a big help in reducing your school’s energy consumption. -Install solar panels: Solar panels can provide an eco-friendly source of energy for your school. -Encourage recycling: Encouraging students and staff to recycle can reduce the amount of waste your school produces. -Purchase green products: When it comes time to purchase new products for your school, look for ones that are environmentally friendly.

Reducing the ecological footprint of schools is a complex challenge, but there are a few simple ways to make a big impact. One way is to reduce the amount of energy used by the school. This can be done by making sure that lights and computers are turned off when they are not needed, and by using energy-efficient appliances. Another way to reduce the ecological footprint of a school is to reduce the amount of waste that it produces. This can be done by recycling and composting as much as possible. Finally, schools can reduce their ecological footprint by promoting sustainable transportation options such as walking, biking, and taking public transportation.

Schools that want to go green face a number of challenges. One of the biggest is finding the money to pay for energy-efficient upgrades. In many cases, schools must rely on fundraising or grants to finance these projects.

Another challenge is getting everyone on board with the changes. Some students and staff members may be resistant to things like recycling or using less paper. It can be helpful to involve students in planning and implementing green initiatives. This can help them feel more ownership of the changes and more invested in making them work.

It can also be a challenge to educate students and staff about why going green is important. In some cases, people may not be aware of the impact their actions have on the environment. They may also not know how easy it is to make small changes that can make a big difference. Raising awareness is an important part of getting everyone on board with going green.

As more and more schools plan international trips, we are faced with a number of challenges. How can we make sure these trips are safe and enriching for everyone involved? How can we make sure they are affordable and accessible to all? And how can we make sure they don’t negatively impact the communities we visit?

Here are some ideas for how to overcome these challenges:

– Work with experienced travel providers who can help you plan a safe and responsible trip. – Make sure all members of the community have a chance to participate in the planning process, so that everyone feels invested in the trip. – Work with local organizations in the communities you visit, so that your trip has a positive impact. – Be flexible and willing to adjust your plans, so that you can respond to any challenges that come up along the way.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best practices for green schools will vary depending on the specific needs and resources of each school. However, some common best practices for green schools include reducing energy and water consumption, promoting waste reduction and recycling, and incorporating environmental education into the curriculum. By implementing these and other sustainable practices, schools can save money, protect the environment, and provide their students with a well-rounded education.

Action by individuals, households and communities is essential to mitigating and adapting to climate change. But we also need large-scale systemic change, led by businesses and governments, to enable a rapid and just transition to a zero-carbon future.

One key area for government action is education. As the next generation of decision-makers, students must be equipped with the knowledge, skills and values to take action on climate change throughout their lives.

Government policies on education can play a powerful role in promoting sustainability and preparing young people for the challenges of a changing climate.

The future of green schools is very promising. With the ever-increasing awareness of the need to protect our environment, more and more schools are beginning to incorporate environmentally friendly practices into their daily operations. From reducing energy consumption to recycling and composting, there are many ways that schools can reduce their impact on the planet.

One of the most exciting trends in green schools is the focus on sustainable travel. As school districts become increasingly aware of the environmental impacts of travel, they are beginning to implement programs that encourage students and staff to use sustainable modes of transportation. From walk and bike to school programs to bus fleets powered by renewable energy, there are many ways that schools can reduce their carbon footprints while promoting healthy activity levels among students and staff.

The future of green schools is very exciting and holds great promise for the environment. As more schools begin to adopt sustainable practices, we will see a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, an increase in recycling and composting rates, and a decrease in overall energy consumption. These trends will have a positive impact on the planet as well as on the health and well-being of students and staff.

As the world becomes more aware of the need to protect our environment, the topic of green schools is becoming more and more important. But what exactly is a green school, and how can we make sure that all schools are green?

A green school is a school that takes steps to reduce its impact on the environment. This can include things like using energy-efficient lighting, recycling and composting, using environmentally-friendly cleaning products, and teaching students about environmental protection.

There are many benefits to making schools green. For one, it can help save money on utility bills. It can also help reduce pollution and waste, and it can even improve student health by reducing exposure to harmful chemicals.

So how can we make sure that all schools are green? One way is to encourage students and staff to take part in eco-friendly practices. This could involve things like starting a recycling club or competition, or holding an assembly on Earth Day to educate students about environmental protection. Another way is to put pressure on decision-makers, such as school boards or government officials, to make changes that will make schools more sustainable.

Making schools green is not an easy process, but it is one that is essential for protecting our environment and ensuring a bright future for generations to come.

Art Competition

Our senior classes took part in an art competition in October. The Green Team noticed that some girls were unsure of what waste goes into each bin. To help ensure we are throwing our rubbish into the correct bin, our senior classes designed a sign for their classroom bins which clearly outlined what the girls can put in each bin. We then shared our designs with the junior classes.

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Moscow continues to implement the city improvement and greening programme

City leaders believe this regeneration project will not only improve the lives of Moscow’s urban dwellers, but increase the city’s prosperity. Their plans will aid the social and economic development of the city while also ensuring it can adapt to meet the challenges of the climate emergency.

Luckily the city is not building a green future from scratch. Around 50% of Moscow is already made up of green spaces of anthropogenically modified areas covered with vegetation, including parks, gardens, natural areas, parks, squares, courtyards and other public green areas. They include large forests in the heart of the urban sprawl, small rivers flowing and opening up into bigger channels, and the meadows and bogs which Moscow is known for. Then there are the historic manor parks with their expansive gardens. All of them contribute to making Moscow a greener ecosystem for people, plants and animals.

These spaces are protected and rich in biodiversity – in fact Moscow’s Red Book form 2019 recorded that in the city there are 569 species of animals and plants under special protection. This is an increase of 117 species of flora and fauna, including 86 species registered for the first time in Moscow. Of these, 91 species have increased in numbers, suggesting the protections in place are working.

As part of the ambitious greening programme, in 2020 Moscow’s mayor Sergei Sobyanin decided to create 26 new protected natural areas covering 1800 hectares. When this project is complete, it will result in 136 protected areas covering a huge 19,5000 hectares – that’s 7.5% of Moscow’s entire territory. This will be expanded again in 2021 with plans to create an additional eight specially protected areas, covering 280 hectares.

These new parks are being built on former industrial zones – regenerating forgotten or dead areas of the city and giving them new life. Courtyards are also being landscaped so they too can be transformed into green, flourishing spaces.

This latest greening project is building on the success of a tree-planting programme that over the past decade has planted more than 9.5 million trees and shrubs in Moscow. In 2020 alone, more than 70,000 trees and 1.3 million shrubs were planted in the city.

The greening project has sat alongside an increase in pedestrianised zones – encouraging city dwellers to leave their cars at home and walk around their neighbourhoods. Until 2011, Moscow only had one pedestrian zone: Arbat Street. Since then, 422 streets and public spaces have been landscaped in the city – that’s equivalent to 370km.

The urban greening project have already had positive outcomes. As well as increasing the physical and mental health of Moscow’s residents, it has maintained biodiversity and had an indirect impact on the economy and utilities. It has also made the city more resilient to the challenges of the climate crisis: increased urban vegetation counteracts water erosion, regulates runoff, improves air quality, combats urban temperature anomalies, and creates a microclimate.

Gorky Park and Sparrow Hills: Green Lungs, place to relax and meet

green schools travel challenge

Gorky Park and Sparrow Hills

The history of the gorky.

The park was built in Soviet times between the two world wars and named after the author Maxim Gorky at the time. Up until the turn of the century, the area not far from the center was only a residential area with huge estates and then, in the turmoil of the civil war and shortly afterwards, served as an illegal landfill where citizens and entrepreneurs disposed of their garbage. After intensive cleaning in the early communist years, the site was first used as an agricultural exhibition in the mid-1920s until the Moscow City Council decided to set up a park here that was accessible to all citizens of Moscow. After all, this was supposed to take a full ten years of construction. Throughout the entire Soviet period, the park was incredibly popular and familiar to every Soviet citizen, whether from Moscow or not.

Rebirth after basic renovation

However, after the end of the Soviet Union, the area fell into disrepair – cheap hustle and bustle like shooting booths and slowly rusting rides shaped the sad picture. Only outsiders got lost in the park, which lived more from its reputation than from the sad reality. Only with the fundamental and just as expensive renovation in 2011 did the Gorky become the park it was once loved by the locals. Especially the promenade along the river with its large sunbathing areas in summer and the numerous ice rinks for ice skating in winter now attract thousands of locals to Gorky every day. Countless food and café stands scattered across the site provide visitors with everything imaginable – from Georgian delicacies, a decent café to traditional Russian kvass, or ice cream and smoothies in summer.

Concerts, art and privacy place

Even bigger crowd pullers are just the concerts in the park and these have a long tradition here. In 2018 alone, David Guetta, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Killers and Lana del Rey performed numerous international music greats Open Air. But even outside the big events there is always something to see in the Gorky. The modern art center “Garage” (website https://garagemca.org/en ) in the park holds regular art and design exhibitions. In addition, the art center gave the park the largest children’s playground in all of Russia for its 90th birthday in 2018. Numerous play equipment, including 29 different swings alone, are the perfect place to spend a few hours with the youngsters. Pedal boats can also be rented at several locations in the park, for example at the Andreevsky ponds, which is also suitable for children. Sports courses for adults are held regularly in the park. From jogging to yoga or Pilates there are organized courses – beach volleyball fields, soccer fields and an open air fitness studio offer further opportunities to do sports. Afterwards, beer gardens invite you to linger – all of this happens primarily in the central part of Gorky Park, known as the Neskuchny Garden. Would you like to experience Gorky Park and the magic of Moscow by yourself? Then you need a visa first – you can find out how to get it here !

Away from the central part: Muzeon and Sparrow Hills

In the section called Muzeon north of the Crimean Bridge there are over 1000 statues, Soviet monuments and modern art facilities. This open-air museum-like section of the Gorky invites you to take a walk that takes you past oversized and pompous Soviet busts as well as avant-garde art objects of the 21st century. Surrounded by statues of Lenin, this section looks partly surreal. The Stalin statue in particular, which had its nose removed, magically attracts visitors. For photographers, the sometimes slightly rusty busts and remains from the Soviet era offer great motifs. If you’d like to improve yourself as a promising photographer, you can even take a photography course in the park at Photoplay ( https://photoplay.ru/courses/workshop/photoplayatgorky.html ) At 2900 rubles, i.e. just under $ 41, this is significantly more affordable than comparable products in Asia or Australia. No wonder this section is considered an Instagram paradise for Moscow’s exploding hipster scene. Events are also held time and again in the Muzeon – for example, the warm months over and over here are held cinema screenings outdoors. Russian classics such as international cinema are shown. You have absolute peace in the Sparrow Hills, which also belong to the park but are spatially separated from the other part. About four kilometers further along the Moskva River out of town is this section of the Gorky Park, which is largely natural. There, just opposite the large Luzhniki Stadium on the other side of the Moskva River, where the Olympics and the World Cup finals have already taken place, there is another privacy place in the middle of Moscow. At the highest point of the Sparrow Hills, to which a cable car leads, you have a fantastic view of Moscow.

Implementation status and challenges

Now I outline the progress that has already been made and criticism that the initiative faces.

Maturity date for the Moscow green bonds is May 18, 2028. The low-carbon transport project will be completed by the end of 2023, and it is not clear at the moment what kind of measures will be taken after that. As for now, the authorities have already made a particular progress, for instance, ten metro stations were opened in December 2021 [14]. In general, the Big Circle Line has to be completed by the end of 2023 [15] with 18 new stations built and 3 stations reconstructed. About 48 kilometers of the metro lines are going to be built or reconstructed.

green schools travel challenge

According to the plan, the electric buses have to be purchased in 2021-2023. In total, the administration plans to buy approximately 1675 of them on the funds collected from the green bonds issue. As of November 2021, 800 electric buses have already been purchased. The Moscow city government plans to procure another 500 in 2022 [16].

green schools travel challenge

The bonds turned out to be quite popular: demand exceeded supply by 1.2 times. The authorities have stated that the citizens in particular showed a high demand for green bonds. They have already invested about 700 million rubles in the project – that is the main reason for the local government to issue the bonds for individual investors [17].

Despite the existing success of the project and its ambitious goals, it is still being criticized. I have outlined three groups of disaffection:

  • First of all, although the authorities claim that a lot of people are going to switch from personal cars to metro as the Big Circle Line is completed, some experts do not believe that this will improve the heavy traffic situation in Moscow. For instance, Peter Shkumatov, auto expert and coordinator of a famous Russian public movement ‘Blue buckets’ (fought against self-serving use of emergency rotating blue flashers by public servants) claims that the incentive parking could have enhanced the effect and reduced the traffic, but not the metro infrastructure alone [18].
  • The cost of the new electric buses is also being criticized: they are three times more expensive in comparison with the common diesel buses and trolleybuses. The maintenance cost is also too high [19]. Many urbanists (for instance, Maxim Katz) and citizens (‘Moscow for trolleybus’ movement) have actively criticized the administration’s decision to abandon trolleybuses, as they have more range and are more environmentally friendly [20] [21].
  • Also the diesel heaters are reported to be installed in the purchased electric buses, and that makes them much less environmentally friendly during winters. As the Deputy General Director of Kamaz (the company that manufactures the Moscow electric buses) states himself, the analogues that use electricity for heat do exist, for instance, in China [22]. According to the Moscow Vice Mayor Maxim Liksutov, the city plans to purchase the models that are fully powered by electricity, without diesel heating in 2022 [23].

A critical reflection and a future of the initiative

As the Moscow administration claims, the authorities of other Russian regions and cities have already expressed their interest in issuing their own green bonds, for instance, Saint Petersburg, Moscow Oblast, [1] and Krasnodar Krai [24]. It is a very important fact for the environmental protection, but I see even a greater potential in this. The power of regions in Russia is limited by many issues. Moscow’s attempt to take action in tackling climate change could encourage other regions not only to become more ambitious non-state actors in the global climate regime, but also to truly strengthen the federalism in the country. However, I had made such a suggestion before the war against Ukraine began. Now the Russian people face the mobilization times: free speech and anti-war movement are being prosecuted, unprecedented sanctions make the federal government limit both green agenda (many federal programs are being postponed) and regions’ opportunities to decide their development directions.

As of March 2022, due to Russian’s invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions imposed, the Moscow bonds were suspended from the Luxembourg Stock Exchange. Also the International Capital Market Association (ICMA), being an influential center for sustainable development initiative, suspended all Russian members [25]. With no doubt, the project of Moscow administration and the green agenda in general will be greatly affected in Russia from now on.

The project has the following joint co-organizers (investment banks engaged in Bond issuance): Alfa Bank, BCS Global Markets, VTB Capital, Gazprombank, Credit Bank of Moscow, Otkritie Bank, Promsvyazbank, Raiffeizenbank, Rosbank, Region Broker, Russian Agricultural Bank, Sber CIB, Sovkombank. Due to the war, the sanctions were imposed on many of them. Moreover, the foreign investors probably will not be interested in Russian state bonds in the nearest future, even the green ones. The author doubts that domestic investors will be able to cover the whole project now, although at the very beginning the Moscow administration expected the demand of Russian investors to be sufficient.

Despite all this, I consider the green bonds to be an effective instrument that could boost the changes and contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation. The financial mechanisms have a great potential of accelerating the voluntary transformation and raising ambition.

Although the validity of some decisions made in the green bonds project is questionable, for example, the choice of certain models of electric buses, the general approach of promoting green mobility is promising. The initiative does not only improve the environmental state of Moscow, but also takes into account the social part of the transformation related to climate change. Such transition has to be a part of sustainable development in a broader sense. Also, although the decentralization in Russia will obviously be delayed, the accumulated experience and acquired skills can be used in the future. The transformation is still possible.
