Mega projects and 2022-23 growth surge give Dubai’s tourism sector a strong head start

tourism news dubai

Mega projects and 2022-23 growth surge give Dubai’s tourism sector a strong head start on achieving long-term strategic targets Tourism is set to be a major contributor to the Dubai Economic Agenda D33’s goal of doubling the size of Dubai’s economy in the next 10 years                                                                                                         Dubai’s ambitious tourism plans also support the national strategy to attract AED100 billion in additional tourism investments and receive 40 million hotel guests in 2031 Helal Almarri: “Dubai’s ability to simultaneously leverage new opportunities and industry trends whilst navigating the impact of global challenges has made it one of the world’s most attractive and fastest-growing tourism and economic cities” From island destinations to high-end waterfront developments, the emirate is implementing a raft of new game-changing tourism projects Dubai tourism industry’s Q1 2023 performance metrics close in on pre-pandemic levels Hotel sector’s performance surpasses pre-pandemic levels across all key measures With over 2,000 exhibitors and 34,000 attendees from more than 150 countries, ATM 2023 is expected to stimulate new investment interest in Dubai’s tourism sector Dubai’s tourism industry has begun the year 2023 on a bright note with vital growth indicators closing in on pre-pandemic levels, giving the emirate a head start in the race to achieve its strategic long-term targets over the next decade. With public and private sector players rolling out a series of mega projects and major global hospitality brands making a beeline to invest in the emirate, tourism is set to be a big contributor to the Dubai Economic Agenda D33’s goal of doubling the city’s economy in the next 10 years. With Dubai expanding its status as a global gateway for trade and investment and its role as a bridge between markets and cultures, tourism is expected to grow in parallel. In 2022, the emirate’s tourism sector contributed $29.4 billion to its economy, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). Dubai’s ambitious plans for tourism growth also support a national strategy launched in November last year by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to attract AED100 billion in additional tourism investments and receive 40 million hotel guests in 2031. The plan, which includes 25 initiatives and policies, has whetted fresh global investor appetite for a slice of the rapidly-growing tourism pie. His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism, said: “Dubai’s ability to simultaneously leverage new opportunities and industry trends whilst navigating the impact of global challenges has made it one of the world’s most attractive and fastest-growing tourism and economic cities. With a unique and diverse tourism proposition, diversified market strategy, world-leading urban infrastructure, inclusive and cohesive public-private partnership ecosystem and high safety and security, Dubai continues to be the preferred choice for global travellers. “Dubai’s tourism growth surge mirrors its development into a leading hub for trade, commerce, investment, talent and entrepreneurship. With the D33 Economic Agenda charting a visionary new growth path for development, Dubai is set to further consolidate its status as one of the world’s top international business and tourism destinations.”   Global recognition The start of 2023 saw Dubai’s global tourism profile being boosted with a flurry of global accolades. The city was ranked as the world’s most popular destination for holidaymakers in Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Awards 2023 for a second year in a row. Dubai also took the second spot behind Paris in a Euromonitor report on the world’s top 100 city destinations. For the ninth year in a row, Dubai International Airport was named the world's busiest international passenger hub in 2022. The tourism industry’s Q1 2023 performance metrics augur well for high-octane growth this year. Dubai welcomed 4.67 million international overnight visitors in the first quarter of 2023, compared to 3.97 million tourists during the same period in 2022, a 17% increase. More tellingly, the first quarter figures were merely 2% less than the pre-pandemic inflow of 4.75 million international overnight visitors in the first quarter of 2019, making the city a frontrunner in the global tourism industry’s rebound. Emirates NBD said in a recent report that the strong start to the year is a promising sign that Dubai could exceed the record of 16.7 million visitors it set in 2019. Dubai Airports forecasts the total number of passengers passing through the city in 2023 to reach 78 million. In the first quarter of the year, the Dubai hotel sector’s performance surpassed pre-pandemic levels across all key measures. Average occupancy for the sector in the January-March period stood at an impressive 83 %, making it one of the highest in the world, and almost on par with the 84 % occupancy recorded in Q1 2019. This achievement is particularly notable given a 26 % increase in room capacity since then. Collectively, Dubai hotels provided 10.98 million Occupied Room Nights, a 27% rise from Q1 2019 and registered an Average Daily Rate (ADR) of AED607, a 22 % growth from Q1 2019. Revenue per available room (RevPAR) in Q1 2023 surged 21 % from the first three months of 2019 to reach AED504 while the average guest stay increased to 4 nights from 3.5 in the same period in 2019. In Q1 2023, visitor spend on accommodation also increased 22 % from Q1 2019. The meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) sector emerged a prominent driver of tourism growth. Dubai registered its highest hotel occupancy rate in 15 years at the end of Expo 2020 last year, according to the latest KPMG Dubai Hospitality report. Major global events to be hosted by the emirate in 2023, including the COP28 climate summit, the Dubai Airshow and a host of international business and sporting events, will put the global spotlight on Dubai not only as a prominent venue for global events but also as a magnet for tourists. Rising investment Dubai has introduced a new strategic plan for exponential tourism growth powered by a massive expansion of its hospitality and leisure infrastructure. From island destinations to unique waterfront communities, Dubai is implementing new game-changing megaprojects.  Consistent with Dubai’s ethos of private-public sector cooperation, the emirate’s tourism mega projects are fostering synergistic partnerships that are creating new economic value.   The exceptional response that this year’s Arabian Travel Market received from the international travel and tourism industry is a testimony to Dubai’s investment opportunities. With over 2,000 exhibitors and 34,000 attendees from more than 150 countries participating, the trade show is expected to fuel new investment interest in Dubai’s tourism sector. Recent investments have led to the growth of Dubai’s hotel stock to 148,877 rooms in 814 hotel establishments compared to 118,039 rooms in 717 hotel establishments in 2019, a rise of 26 % and 14 % respectively. Another 8,000 rooms are expected to be delivered by the end of 2023, according to KPMG. Nakheel is set to launch the Dubai Islands comprising five islands across a total area of 17 sq. km, a destination offering a mix of residential, retail, leisure and hospitality services. A unique development that creates new experiences for international travellers, the Dubai Islands features 20 km of beachfront, 2 sq. km. of parks, and more than 80 hotels, including luxury and wellness resorts, and boutique, family and eco-conscious hotels. The 6 sq. km Dubai Creek Harbour project, a joint venture between Dubai Holding and Emaar Properties set to be built over the next decade, featuring premium serviced apartments, residential complexes and parks, is set to further stimulate the city’s tourism and hospitality markets. Other major projects include Meraas’ newest seafront destination, Port de La Mer, which features six plots inspired by the elements of seaside living. With the continued rollout of large projects, the city has steadily strengthened its position as a focal point for global tourism investments. Dubai currently holds the top global spot for FDI inflows into the tourism sector, according to The Financial Times’ fDi Markets data. In another vote of confidence for Dubai’s emergence both as a tourism destination and a global commercial hub, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts last month relocated its global headquarters from Paris to Dubai. Fairmont’s parent company Accor said the decision was driven by the city’s “strong position as a global hub; strategic proximity to Europe, Asia, and Africa; and the city’s ability to attract top talent, brands, companies and investors.” The move reflects a larger shift in the centre of gravity of the global tourism industry from the west to the east. With nearly 40 % of Fairmont’s current development projects located in the IMEAT (India, Middle East, Africa and Türkiye) region, the relocation to Dubai allows Fairmont to take advantage of vast opportunities in the region’s fast-growing tourism markets. Growing appeal for the global traveller Dubai’s distinctive identity that combines its cultural heritage with its futuristic outlook, and adventure opportunities with world-class shopping and entertainment have drawn a growing number of international visitors over the last few years. Apart from a significant expansion in capacity, a series of events and developments in the last year have further enriched Dubai’s appeal for travelers.

The hosting of the six-month Expo 2020 led to Dubai registering its highest hotel occupancy rate in 15 years of 96 %, according to the latest KPMG Dubai Hospitality report. The global extravaganza recorded 24 million visits, of which more than a third were overseas travellers. With Dubai already having built a global reputation as a must-visit destination, visitors from around the world seized the opportunity offered by Expo 2020 to visit the city and explore its multifaceted offering, in addition to enjoying the unique experiences at the mega global event. Dubai also became a focal point for the global football fraternity during the Qatar World Cup 2022. With almost 50% of flights to Doha coming from Dubai during the tournament, the emirate became the first choice stop-over city for vast numbers of football fans seeking to combine a trip to the World Cup with a holiday in the city, further boosting occupancy in the emirate’s hotels. One of the biggest catalysts in raising Dubai’s appeal for travellers in the post-pandemic phase was the city’s management of the crisis. Dubai was one of the first cities to resume international travel and business events after the pandemic. The city implemented globally-benchmarked travel protocols and precautionary measures, which were among the most comprehensive and strictly enforced in the world, earning it the status of the world’s safest travel destination. Tourism and allied sectors continue to reap the benefits of the city’s handling of the crisis.   Dubai’s rise as one of the world’s great gastronomic destinations has also vastly enriched its tourism proposition. With world-class restaurants offering an incredible eclectic range of culinary delights, the city is drawing gastronomes from all corners of the planet. In 2022, Dubai garnered more prestigious international awards for its restaurants than any other city. The world’s most celebrated restaurant guides unveiled their local lists last year including Gault & Millau and the Michelin guide.

In the last few years, Dubai’s travel, tourism and hospitality industries have also been at the vanguard of adopting and accelerating new trends in technology and sustainability. New technology-driven immigration and hospitality procedures like airport smart gates, contactless check-in and hotel mobile keys have enhanced the travel and tourism experience offered by Dubai. Driving eco-friendly practices, stakeholders in the local industry are showing a strong commitment to transitioning from plastic bottles, optimising use of natural resources and reducing carbon emissions. Under the theme of 'Working Towards Net Zero', ATM 2023 has sparked a new dialogue on how stakeholders can work together to build a sustainable travel industry, ahead of the COP28 climate conference that will be held in Dubai later this year. All of these developments place Dubai’s tourism sector in an ideal position to ride the crest of global demand, generate new economic value and investment opportunities, and ultimately help realise the leadership’s vision to make the emirate the world’s best city to live, visit, work and invest in.

Why Go To Dubai

Dubai and  Las Vegas  have a lot in common. Both cities share a love for the fantastical, with skylines that shine like beacons against barren desert backdrops. People from all over the world flock to these shimmering oases with the same goal: to play hard. But as a vacation spot, Dubai easily trumps ol' Sin City thanks to its gorgeous cream-colored Persian Gulf shoreline, international culinary scene and larger-than-life attractions . And the city's still growing; plans are underway for something bigger and better. At one point, it was estimated that a quarter of the world's construction cranes could be found here. If that's any sign, even the sky may not be able to limit Dubai's growth.

Dubai is a city of superlatives, home to the world's tallest tower, one of the world's largest shopping malls , and one of the world's largest man-made marinas… but on a smaller scale, this emirate is still tied to its days as a modest port town. Traditional wooden  abras  (boats) float past motorboats on Dubai Creek, the natural sands of  Jumeirah Public Beach  fringe the carefully sculpted Palm Islands, and the bustling  Gold and Spice Souks  (marketplaces) thrive amid the larger-than-life Dubai Mall. Despite constantly looking to the future, this city isn't quick to let go of its past. It's this dynamic that not only put Dubai on the tourist map but will also keep it there.

Dubai Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Dubai is from November to March. Weather-wise, Dubai really only experiences two seasons: hot and hotter. During the winter months, the city sees blue skies and primo beach weather. However, this is also peak tourist season, so expect plenty of company on  Jumeirah Beach . You can escape the crowds if you visit during the summer months, but be prepared for triple-digit temps and high humidity levels

Weather in Dubai

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

You'll feel safe here  Dubai is unaffected by the turmoil taking place in other parts of the Middle East. The city's population stems from countries across the globe, and everyone coexists peacefully.

What not to wear  Nearly 60 percent of Dubai's residents are practicing Muslims, which means that you'll find conservative attire to be the norm. Avoid wearing anything too revealing.

Too much sun can be a bad thing  Dubai's visitors often fall in love with the city's warm, sunny climate. However, it can get really hot, and there aren't a lot of shady places in the middle of the desert. Lather on sunscreen, drink plenty of water and wear a hat.

How to Save Money in Dubai

Plan in advance  A trip to Dubai will be expensive. But you'll have a better chance at snagging a lower room rate if you make your hotel reservations two to three months in advance.

Visit in the summer  Most travelers can't take the heat during this season, leaving little competition for desirable room rates.

Stay sober  Alcohol is rarely served outside of restaurants and bars, where prices are about as high as the  Burj Khalifa . You'll save big bucks if you skip the drinks.

Culture & Customs

Dubai stands as one of seven states (or "Emirates") that make up the United Arab Emirates; the other six are Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al Quwain. Each emirate is governed by a sheikh, or Arabic ruler. The sheikh of Abu Dhabi acts as president of the Federal Supreme Council (both the UAE's legislative and executive body), while the sheikh of Dubai fills the role of vice president. Although Abu Dhabi serves as the official capital of the UAE, Dubai has long been the emirates' commercial and financial hub.

But Dubai wasn't always the economic powerhouse it is today. Before oil was discovered in the mid-1960s, Dubai's economy relied solely on fishing and a moderately successful pearl industry. But once oil became a point of trade about 10 years after its discovery, the economy soared, and continues to do so. The current UAE vice president of and prime minister and Dubai Sheikh, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is strongly invested in the city's growth and status as a tourist hot spot.

The emirate's role as a commercial heavyweight attracts expats from around world. Dubai's population features citizens of 200 different nationalities, and each has left its own imprint on daily life. However, the dominant religion here is Islam, and Muslim culture greatly impacts Dubai's society. As a result, visitors are encouraged to dress modestly here – that means no exposed chests, thighs or midriffs – and alcohol is not commonly found outside of international hotels and restaurants. Those who visit during Ramadan (the Islamic month of fasting) are encouraged to refrain from eating or drinking in public places.

Despite its size, Dubai has earned a reputation as being one of the safest places in the Middle East. The UAE remains removed from the political and religious conflicts taking place in other parts of the Middle East. Women visiting Dubai should also feel safe to move about freely. However, women are often taken aback by Emiratis' tendency to stare; note that these gazes are most likely out of curiosity, not rudeness.

Although the official language is Arabic, Dubai's trade history and booming tourism market means that almost everyone speaks English. American travelers can also rejoice in the fact that most major credit cards are accepted at stores, hotels and restaurants. For those paying in cash, the official currency here is the Emirati dirham (AED), which is equal to roughly $0.27. Check what the current exchange rate is before you arrive and have cash on hand when visiting Dubai's traditional  souks   (markets).

What to Eat

Emirati food, the principal cuisine in Dubai, is all about one thing: spice. Put down the salt and pepper; in Dubai, all the flavor you'll ever need is already sprinkled into the dish from a wider variety of seasonings, few of which you may not be familiar (Is za'atar in your spice cabinet? What about cardamom?). There are so many interesting and exotic dishes to sample in Dubai, the best way to navigate its rich culinary landscape is by starting with the basics.

Al machboos is the Emirati's staple dish – think what red beans and rice are to New Orleans – and something you can't skip on your tasting tour of the Emirates. A favorite in the home and at restaurants, al machboos appears to be a simple dish – your choice of meat topped with rice – but packs a big punch flavor-wise, because it's seasoned with cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, dried lemon and yellow raisins. Thanks to Dubai's location along the coast, fish is plentiful and widely used as the choice of meat in hardy dishes. M'hammar will satisfy any seafood lover's craving for the taste of the Arabian Peninsula, prepared with locally caught fish and served with sweet yellow rice, caramelized onions and of course, a host of spices. Believe it or not, camel is widely available throughout Dubai, but is typically served on special occasions and often considered a food eaten among VIPs.

Other traditional fare to look out for are chebab, Emirati pancakes infused with saffron and cardamom and topped with yogurt and date syrup; khameer bread, which is stuffed with sweet or savory fillings, and kunafa, the Middle Eastern take on a cheese Danish. Arabic coffee is an experience in itself, especially for those who often take theirs with only cream and sugar. This coffee features regional lightly roasted beans mixed with saffron and cardamom. The ingredients are ground, boiled then strained and served in small cups. Don't forget to satisfy your sweet tooth here either. Emiratis love their desserts. The most traditional is luqaimat, which is batter deep fried in ghee and served with local date syrup (think doughnut holes with a Middle Eastern twist). Another classic dish is balaleet, which features sweet vermicelli noodles with raisins, saffron, cardamom and other spices. And if you're visiting during Ramadan, try Assidat al-Boubar, a pumpkin pudding made with rosewater that's widely served after the fast is broken.

A huge part of what has shaped Dubai's food landscape is the melting pot of cultures (more than 200 nationalities) that share the city. Aside from Emirati establishments, you'll find restaurants serving everything from classic French fare to dim sum. If you want flash, definitely go to one of the Burj Al Arab 's restaurants. There's also  La Petite Maison , a Michelin star-rated French import that sits near the Four Seasons. For beloved (and cheaper) casual eateries, head over to Al Samadi Sweets for Lebanese and Arabic dessert, or kick back and relax at  Seven Sands, the oceanfront restaurant at Jumeirah Beach Residence. For more information about where to eat, check out the Dubai tourism board's  website.

Getting Around Dubai

The best way to get around Dubai is by taxi or by metro. Although prices are high across the board in Dubai, a taxi here or there won't break the bank. Plus, they provide the freedom to move at your own pace without the hassle of navigating traffic. Dubai's metro system transports passengers to major areas of interest, including  Burj Khalifa  and the Dubai International Airport (DXB). The airport is about 10 miles from downtown Dubai. You can also rent a car at the airport, but be forewarned: driving here is not for the faint-hearted.

Entry & Exit Requirements

Americans visiting the United Arab Emirates must have an official U.S. passport that is valid for at least six months following your arrival date. Travelers must also possess a return ticket or other proof that they will be leaving the UAE within that 30-day timeframe. For visits exceeding 30 days, travelers must obtain a tourist visa prior to departure. Americans exiting the UAE by land transportation will be subject to departure fee of 35 dirhams (about $9.60), payable only in local currency. For more information, visit the U.S. State Department website .

Once a small fishing town, Dubai has developed significantly since it struck gold in the oil business. Today, the city is dotted with impressive skyscrapers but still features old towns throughout.

Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism launches ‘Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp’ for hotels with the highest adherence to sustainability standards

Dubai’s department of economy and tourism (det) has announced the launch of the ‘dubai sustainable tourism stamp’, a new sustainability initiative that seeks to recognise hotels with the highest adherence to det’s 19 ‘sustainability requirements’. the initiative, launched in line with the uae year of sustainability, is part of det’s commitment to strengthening dubai’s position as a leading sustainable tourism destination..

Developed in collaboration with Dubai ’s hospitality sector, the new stamp is designed to accelerate efforts towards empowering the tourism sector to achieve its sustainability goals and support the UAE’s NetZero 2050 initiative. As Dubai continues to strive to achieve the objectives outlined in the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, the initiative will contribute to further consolidating the city’s status as one of the top three global destinations.

The Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp will serve as a validation of a hotel’s dedication to sustainability and showcase its sustainable practices. To obtain the stamp, hotels of all classifications must meet the highest standards of DET’s 19 sustainability requirements, which include criteria such as energy and water efficiency, waste management programmes, and staff education and engagement initiatives. The accreditation process will be overseen by a committee of senior industry professionals to ensure integrity and independence, with the initiative designed based on global best practices.

The stamp will feature a three-tier scheme with categories ranging from Gold, Silver and Bronze. Nominations for hotel establishments to obtain the Sustainable Tourism Stamp will begin on 3 August, 2023 and end on 31 August, 2023.

Dubai, a model of sustainability in tourism

Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism launches ‘Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp’ for hotels with the highest adherence to sustainability standards

Yousuf Lootah, Acting CEO of Corporate Strategy and Performance sector, DET, stated: “As part of our efforts to transform Dubai into a leading sustainable tourism destination in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make our city the best place in the world to visit, live and work in, the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp champions sustainable practices while setting a benchmark for excellence in environmental stewardship, aligned with the goals of our Economic Agenda 2033. We have carefully curated a set of high standard criteria that will reward hotels that go above and beyond in their sustainable practices.

“By recognising these exemplary establishments, we are encouraging others to follow suit and embrace sustainable initiatives that not only benefit their businesses but also contribute to the collective well-being of our city and the world at large,” added Lootah.

“Supported by Dubai’s vibrant hotel industry, this initiative is a strategic step towards achieving our goal of a leading destination for global travellers seeking the ultimate sustainability experience. By supporting businesses and encouraging them to adopt eco-friendly practices and reducing their carbon footprint, we are not only safeguarding the environment but also promoting sustainable growth. As Dubai prepares to host the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28), the UN Climate Change Conference from 30 November to 12 December this year, the launch of the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp also demonstrates the tourism industry’s foresight and determination to foster an eco-friendly sector that is both economically prosperous and environmentally responsible.”

DET’s sustainability strategy has paved the way for innovative initiatives including the Carbon Calculator, a mechanism to help stakeholders and partners identify cost saving opportunities and manage the transition to sustainable practices, in line with the sustainability requirements.

Dubai Can, a citywide sustainability initiative, focuses on promoting the use of reusable bottles and encouraging people to refill.  Since its inception in February 2022, the programme successfully reduced the use of an equivalent of more than 10 million 500 ml single-use plastic water bottles and led to the installation of 50 water fountains throughout the city since its inception.

The excitement among UAE residents planning to travel to popular tourist destinations during the Eid Al Fitr holidays has been dampened by a sharp increase in airfares. As residents prepare for the longest public holiday of the year , potentially spanning nine days, reports indicate a significant spike in ticket prices, soaring by nearly 400 per cent for some countries.

Firoz Maliyakkal, founder and CEO of Tahira Tours and Travels, explained that the price rise can be attributed to several factors. "The price increase is because of the ease of travel to many countries, visa-on-arrival facilities, affordability, and the weather, making it a perfect short trip for UAE residents," he said.

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

Firoz highlighted the sudden sell-out of tickets due to overwhelming demand, "leaving only a limited number of airline and via service tickets available currently that are also filling fast."

UAE authorities announced the Eid holidays for private sector employees ; if Ramadan lasts 30 days, the break is from Monday, April 8 (Ramadan 29), till Friday, April 12 (Shawwal 3). If one factors in the Saturday-Sunday weekends before and after the break, that's nine days off. The break will then be from Saturday, April 6, to Sunday, April 14.

Libin Varghese, Operations Head at Rooh Tourism and Travel, said the high demand is due to the longer break, allowing residents to plan flexibly. "With schools also on holiday, it presents a perfect opportunity for families to embark on trips together.

"Additionally, the beautiful landscapes of the Caucasian countries with the favourable weather during this period further fueled the travel demand," Vargehese said.

The travel expert added, "These countries have always been in high demand, and packages are selling out rapidly in these destinations during the Eid holidays. We have seen a surge in bookings, with many packages to a few countries already sold out due to the high demand."

A comparison conducted by Khaleej Times across various ticketing platforms unveiled the extent of the surge. On Saturday, March 6, the one-way airfare to Tbilisi in Georgia skyrocketed to Dh1,500, drastically increasing from the usual rate of nearly Dh300.

Similarly, flights from Dubai to Yerevan in Armenia listed an average airfare of Dh1,100 during the Eid break. While Baku showed a slightly lower average airfare of Dh800 for a one-way ticket during the holiday period, airfare to Serbia is on the rise, with prices soaring from the regular range of Dh400 to 500 to over Dh1,400 during the weekend.

In contrast, airfares to India and Pakistan sectors have remained relatively stable, with agents reporting a modest increase of 40 to 50 per cent during the Eid break.

Raheesh Babu, COO, Musafir.com, said that with the upcoming Eid al-Fitr holiday season, they are observing a notable surge in travel demand from the Gulf region to India, with an increase of 30-35 per cent compared to previous periods. "This rise in demand is largely attributed to the extended 9-day Eid Al Fitr holiday and coinciding school spring break. Interestingly, this surge surpasses last year's figures and pre-covid travel volumes, marking a 15-20 per cent increase in bookings.

"Notably, India remains a top-choice destination during this period for Gulf travellers, driven by the significant expatriate communities in the region. However, accompanying the heightened demand, airfare prices have seen a notable uptick, with increases ranging from 40 per cent to 50 per cent on certain routes during the Eid al-Fitr season," added Raheesh Babu.

Dubai Launches Recognition Program for Indian Meetings Agents

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

April 7th, 2024 at 2:31 PM EDT

India's growing prominence in outbound MICE presents a significant opportunity that Dubai aims to leverage. The new recognition program targeting Indian intermediaries will definitely push agencies to promote Dubai as a preferred MICE destination.

Peden Doma Bhutia

Dubai Business Events, part of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism and the city’s official convention bureau, on Monday will announce its first-ever recognition program for Indian intermediaries for meetings, incentives, conferences and events business.

The MICE Star Awards program recognizes agents in India and their role in solidifying Dubai’s position as a leading business events destination.

“The award recipients will be selected based on an evaluation process that considers both the volume and value of their business to Dubai’s business events and wider tourism ecosystem,” a statement from Dubai Business Events said.

Dubai’s exhibitions, conferences, seminars, and business events sector grew by 25% last year. Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) attracted 2.47 million participants in 2023.

DWTC noted that the strong performance in 2023 reflects Dubai’s economic growth and its role as an international platform for business and trade. The growth was driven by 301 events, marking a 23% increase compared to 2022.

In addition, Dubai secured 349 bids to host international conferences and meetings facilitated by Dubai Business Events, representing a 49% increase in successful bids from the prior year. These events are expected to bring in over 191,000 international delegates to the city.

A report by Dubai Pulse estimates that the events industry in Dubai was worth $44.7 billion in 2023, with an annual growth rate of 25% projected from 2023 to 2027. The industry currently supports 100,000 jobs in Dubai and is expected to create an additional 10,000 jobs over the next five years.

India’s Outbound MICE Potential

According to Dubai Business Events, the launch of the program highlights Dubai’s dedication to the Indian MICE market. In 2023, India emerged as the top source country for visitors to Dubai, reflecting the city’s popularity for business events.

Dubai has also introduced a five-year multiple entry visa for Indian travelers . “As a key market for Dubai, India will continue to play an integral role in enabling us to achieve the goals of the  D33 Agenda , further reinforcing Dubai’s position as a hub for business, investment and tourism,” said Bader Ali Habib, regional head of proximity markets at Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism.

ResearchAndMarkets.com forecasts that India’s outbound MICE tourism market will reach $13.4 billion by 2031. It said the growth in this sector is driven by economic factors, including government support, improved air connectivity, and increased awareness among businesses and individuals about the benefits of attending international events.

India’s business travel spending is set to reach $38 billion this year, with a projected full recovery to pre-2019 spending levels by 2025, according to the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA).

“Companies prioritize in-person interactions with clients and suppliers to expedite projects. Professionals also embark on business trips to participate in meetings, events, and seminars,” Sunny Sodhi, managing director of FCM Travel India, told Skift earlier.

The pharmaceutical, finance, and manufacturing sectors are key drivers of India’s outbound MICE tourism.

UAE visa cancellation: Govt introduces five digital guidelines

 alt=

Abu Dhabi: The UAE government has introduced five digital guidelines for the cancellation of visas. The visa of family members are to be cancelled by the sponsor while the employee visa should be cancelled by the respective companies or employers. Individuals cannot cancel their visas on their own. To cancel an employee’s visa, the company should first apply for cancellation of his/her employment contract and labour card at the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. The employee too should sign on the application.

Besides, an affidavit signed by the employee stating that he/she had duly received the wages and other benefits. After this, the employer can apply to the ICP or GDRFI for visa cancellation. Meanwhile, the individuals could cancel their visa only after the visa cancellation process of the family members is completed. The visas could be cancelled online via the official website of ICP or through approved typing centres. Persons would be allowed to stay in the country only if the visa is renewed before it expires. However, individuals may be allowed to stay in the country for 1 – 6 months after visa cancellation depending upon the nature of the visa.

Meanwhile, AED 50 would be charged as a fine for each day that a person stays in the country with an expired visa. It must be noted that the Emirates ID too would be invalid as soon as the visa expires. So, the application for visa cancellation should be submitted at the ICP before it expires. Check the website for details.

Dubai: As UAE residents gear up for nine days long Eid Al Fitr holidays, Dubai International Airport (DXB) has shared tips for travellers to cope with expected massive rush. More people are expected to travel this season because the Eid break also coincides with the school spring break.

Dubai International (DXB), the world’s leading airport for international passenger traffic, is preparing to welcome an estimated 3.6 million guests during April 2-15.

During this period, the daily traffic is set to exceed 258,000 guests on average, with particularly busy weekends forecasted. Saturday, April 13, is expected to be the busiest day, with total guest numbers soaring to 292,000.

Whether travellers are returning home for the holidays, arriving in Dubai to partake in the festivities, or simply passing through, Dubai Airports, together with airlines and service and commercial partners, is committed to ensuring a truly memorable experience for all guests, says DXB in a press release on Tuesday.

Travel tips during peak season

Pre-weigh luggage at home, organise documents in advance, and be prepared for security checks to minimise stress and delays.

Remember to pack spare batteries and power banks in your hand luggage.

Farewell goodbyes should be exchanged at home, as only passengers will be permitted inside the terminals during peak periods.

Utilise the Dubai Metro to get to and from the airport as well as between Terminals 1 and 3 in case of congestion on the roads.

Emirates passengers can take advantage of the airline’s convenient home, early and self check-in facilities, including city check-in options.

flydubai passengers are advised to arrive at least four hours before departure.

Guests flying with other airlines should aim to arrive at DXB no earlier than three hours before their scheduled departure time, utilising online check-in where available to save time.

Families with children over 12 can expedite the passport control process by using Smart Gates.

Stay informed about the latest travel regulations for your destination and ensure you have all necessary travel documents ready.

Access to the arrivals’ forecourts in both Terminals 1 and 3 is restricted to public transport and authorised airport vehicles only. Visitors picking up guests should utilise DXB’s designated car parks or valet services.
