2023 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban Review: Well-rounded bigness

No significant updates for 2023 (well, unless super cruise actually shows up).

Pros: Well-rounded; sophisticated magnetic and air suspension; user-friendly tech; great Duramax diesel option

Cons: less efficient and/or powerful base engine than rivals; weird shifter; flat seats.

There aren’t many areas where the 2023 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban stand out from their full-size SUVs competitors, but they are very well-rounded. Basically, the standard-length Tahoe and extended-length Suburban both score well in all important categories even if they aren’t always the class best or most appealing. For instance, we might prefer the Ford Expedition ’s turbo V6 as a base engine and the Jeep Wagoneer’s interior , but the Chevrolets’ total package ultimately adds up to the better buy for the most people.

That’s not to say there aren’t highlights. The optional Duramax diesel is the big one: it provides the same torque as the 6.2-liter V8, will save you money at the pump (yep, even with high diesel prices) and is shockingly quiet. The Tahoe’s variety of suspension options are also a big deal, especially the magnetic and air combo that provides superior ride comfort and body control. The interior’s new Android-powered infotainment system is easy to use and fairly future-proof thanks to over-the-air updates and integrated Google Maps. Finally, should the Tahoe’s style not exactly match yours, the GMC Yukon is basically the same vehicle. It’s just as well-rounded.

Now, as usual, we will point out that it’s important to consider whether you really need the added towing capacity and massive boxy cargo space of a full-size SUV (or the Suburban’s more usable cargo space behind the third-row). Large crossovers like the Kia Telluride or Chevy’s own Traverse offer nearly as much interior space as the Tahoe, but will be cheaper to fuel, provide better handling and maneuverability, and come with cheaper price tags.

Adaptive cruise control is now standard on the High Country, while the Premier and High Country will in theory be available with GM ’s excellent Super Cruise hands-free highway driving tech at some point. Component shortages have caused this addition to be indefinitely delayed. The only other changes are new versions of silver, gray and red exterior paint.

What are the Tahoe interior and in-car technology like?

Unlike past generations, the current Chevy Tahoe and Suburban get an interior that’s completely different than the Silverado. This used to be a good thing, as the current-generation Tahoe cabin was substantially nicer than the comparable Silverado, but last year’s interior redo of Chevy’s pickup actually tipped the scales in its direction. Whatever, the Tahoe is still a fine place to spend time, with solid materials and build quality for the money. Controls are generally easy to use, and although the push-button transmission selector is a little odd, it's ergonomically placed. 

When it comes to tech, all but the base Tahoe 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system that runs Android Automotive software as skinned by  GM . This is not to be confused with Android Auto, which is a common car feature that allows the car's tech interface to control apps on your smartphone (Apple CarPlay is its iPhone equivalent. That's also in the Tahoe and Suburban, along with CarPlay.) Though the name makes it confusing, Android Auto motive is basically an in-car tech interface created by Google (Android) that different car companies can customize, utilizing the tech giant's various existing features. Among those, it integrates Google’s ecosystem nicely — Google Maps works well as the navigation system. We found the voice-activated Google Assistant (the Android version of Siri) requires an odd “warm-up” period when you first start the car that locks you out of using voice commands for the first 20-30 seconds. That’s inconvenient when you want to get in and get navigation rolling, but at least the Google Assistant works flawlessly once it’s finally ready. Much of the other tech in the Tahoe/Suburban is top notch, as the 12-inch digital cluster is nicely laid out with multiple viewing options, and the large head-up display is just as well integrated. You can get a pair of 12.6-inch screens mounted on the headrests for rear passengers to consume content on, too.

How big are the Tahoe and Suburban?

After their complete redesign two years ago, the Tahoe and Suburban gained a significant amount of extra space due to extra length and an independent rear suspension that lowered the floor. The latter was key, as it made the Tahoe’s third row habitable by adults, increased cargo capacity and decreased lift-over height. It also resulted in the Tahoe and Suburban having the same amount of third-row space – it’s only the amount of cargo space behind it that differs.

The end result is the Tahoe and Suburban aren’t quite as large as their Ford and Jeep competitors, but the difference is so small and the space ultimately so vast that it doesn’t matter. That third row may be a bit flat, but even tall adults have loads of room to sit quite comfortably for extended periods of time. Behind the third-row seats, the Tahoe has 25.5 cubic feet of space (picture above right). That's theoretically about a 6-cubic-foot advantage over the Expedition  on paper, but  in real-world testing , we found the actual difference to be negligible.  The Jeep Wagoneer , meanwhile, has appreciably more than both. Still, it's a genuinely large space for a three-row vehicle. Of course, if you plan to routinely travel with all three rows filled, opting for the Suburban and its added cargo space is a good idea. Its cargo space behind the third row swells to 41.5 cubic feet.

What are the Tahoe fuel economy and performance specs?

The 2022 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban have three engines to pick from. The base engine is a naturally aspirated 5.3-liter V8 making 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. It’s coupled to a 10-speed automatic transmission and available with either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. The Tahoe returns 15 mpg city, 20 mpg highway and 17 mpg combined regardless of drivetrain. The RWD Suburban gets the same, but falls to 15/19/16 with 4WD. These figures are worse than those of the more powerful Ford Expedition.

Available on the Z71, RST, Premier and High Country is a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8. It makes 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Like the 5.3-liter engine, it comes with a 10-speed automatic and either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. City and highway fuel economy differs somewhat by drivetrain, trim level and Tahoe or Suburban, but all versions with this engine get 16 mpg combined.

A unique offering for the GM full-size SUVs is the diesel 3.0-liter inline-six. It’s the only engine like it in the class. It makes 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque and will also get the 10-speed automatic. It obliterates the fuel economy of the gas engines, with 21 mpg city, 28 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined for the 2WD Tahoe and 20/26/22 with 4WD. The Suburban is basically the same. Diesel prices will greatly determine how much you’ll save at the pump with this engine, but the gigantic fuel economy advantage should still come out in the Duramax’s favor.

Towing capacities are between 7,500 and 8,000 pounds depending on body style, engine and drivetrain. The diesel is the best choice, but only slightly. A tow package increases capacity across the board and actually results in the 5.3-liter being slightly better, but again, the difference is small.

What are the Tahoe and Suburban like to drive?

There are a wide array of Tahoe and Suburban powertrain and chassis combinations, and we haven’t driven them all, but the versions we’ve driven have been impressive. Four suspension offerings are available: a fixed steel spring and shock system; an air suspension; a steel spring suspension with magnetic dampers; air suspension with magnetic dampers. We haven't sampled the base system, but we would nevertheless suggest a Tahoe or Suburban with the magnetic dampers. It provides a glassy smooth ride, limited body roll, and its controlled enough to eliminate nearly all the shimmies and shudders that crop up in large, body-on-frame vehicles.

The air suspension on its own lets those body wiggles through more, but is still pleasant. In the default comfort mode, it rides fairly soft with moderate body roll, and the sport mode stiffens things up noticeably, but without becoming uncomfortable. Regardless of suspension, you get the same steering, which is excellent. It’s nicely weighted, and quite precise. And even with the more roly-poly base air suspension, the big SUV handles well with good turn-in and a stable, composed feel even over bumpy corners.

We’ve also now driven Tahoes/Suburbans with every available engine. The 5.3-liter V8 provides perfectly adequate acceleration, but it's no match for the Ford Expedition's silky smooth and far more powerful turbo V6. The 6.2-liter is a much better contender and does liven things up a bit, though we still wouldn’t call it fast. Ultimately, we think the Duramax diesel is the best choice. It certainly won't be fast, either, but its benefits are many. Its peak torque matches the 6.2-liter, but occurs at 1,500 rpm rather than 4,100. That makes it well-suited to towing and results in acceleration that feels stronger off the line. It’s shockingly quiet, both inside and outside, lacking the expected, obnoxious diesel clatter, and is the most efficient engine offering.

We take our first drive in the new Tahoe and find that it drives well and has a quality interior.

What are the 2023 Tahoe and Suburban prices?

Considering that GM repeatedly increased Tahoe and Suburban pricing last year, it’s certainly plausible that some or all of the below prices will change at some point in the coming months. All prices include the hefty $1,795 destination charge. Four-wheel drive adds $3,000 to all prices but the Z71, which includes it as standard.

The base LS (pictured below left) comes with basically every feature you’d ever need, but considering few people buy a Tahoe or Suburban because they literally need one, we’re guessing the LT’s key extras like leather seating, heated front seats, 10.2-inch touchscreen, digital instrument panel, Bose stereo and wireless charging will make it the go-to starting point.

From there, the lineup forks in different directions. The RST is equipped comparable to the LT, but gets darker and body-colored exterior trim. Basically, it’s looks sportier. The Z71 looks more rugged (pictured above) and it is more rugged thanks to all-terrain tires , a skid plate, a unique front fascia that provides a better approach angle and clearance, and the option of the height-adjustable air suspension (also available on upper trims). Things then get increasingly luxurious with the Premier and High Country (pictured below right), with the latter coming standard with the 6.2-liter V8, magnetic and air suspension setup and 22-inch wheels to go with every luxury, convenience and safety feature on the menu.

What are the Tahoe/Suburban safety ratings and driver assistance features?

The Tahoe and Suburban come standard with automatic emergency  braking  with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, automatic high-beam headlights and a rear seat reminder. Optional safety features that come standard on some higher trim models include reverse automatic emergency braking , blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors and adaptive cruise control. GM’s Super Cruise hands-free highway driving system can replace adaptive cruise control as an option on the Premier and High Country, but its availability is delayed due to chip shortages .

The Tahoe and Suburban received four out of five stars for overall crash protection from the NHTSA , including a four-star frontal rating, five-star side rating and three-star rollover rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not tested the latest generation.

What's New On The 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe

The Tahoe is one of the most versatile SUVs you can buy and Chevy has made some changes for 2023. These include:

The 5.3-liter V-8 helps the 4WD Tahoe accelerate from 0-60 MPH in 7.7 seconds. If you opt for the 6.2-liter V-8 version, you can achieve the same in 5.9 seconds with a top speed of 124 MPH.

The High Country trim, as the name suggests, is the top-end variant of the Tahoe line-up and costs $78,295, along with a destination charge of $1,995.

Standard Features

The High Country trim gets two engine options including the larger 6.2-liter gasoline V-8 aluminium block as standard and the optional 3.0-liter turbo diesel. The only transmission option for both engines is a 10-speed automatic transmission with a Traction Select System which is a drive mode selector based on prevalent road conditions. Chevrolet also equips the exterior of the Tahoe with 22-inch Sterling Silver alloy wheels featuring chrome inserts, body-color mirrors, and bright sill plates at the front and rear doors.

Inside the driver also gets a 15-inch Heads Up Display integrated into the windshield which can be programmed to display the most important information. Also included is a camera-based digital rearview and HD surround camera. The driver and front passenger get heated and ventilated seats, with 10-way adjustment for comfort.

The second-row seats get heating options with their own set of controls. As far as the infotainment system goes in the High Country trim, it comes with a 10.2-inch multi-touch display with Google built-in, Bluetooth, Wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto as standard. You also get wireless charging as standard. The audio system is a Bose 10-speaker Surround system with CenterPoint audio.

The High Country comes with a suite of the latest safety technology which includes:

• Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking
• StabiliTrak - Electronic stability control system with traction control.
• Chevy Safety Assist which includes Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Front Pedestrian Braking, Following Distance Indicator, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and IntelliBeam.

As usual, there are a lot of paid extras that can be added to the High Trim’s exteriors including gorgeous Gloss Black 22-inch multispoke wheels which can be yours for an additional $2,295. An optional power panoramic sunroof can be had for an additional $1,500. There is also a Cat-Back Performance exhaust which is a costly $2,295.

If you want the ultra-comfortable Adaptive Air Ride Suspension, it can be yours for $1000. Adaptive Cruise Control will set you back $895, and if you want a sporty pedal cover kit, it can be yours for $185. In places with extremely cold climates, you have the option of an engine block heater for $100. To improve safety there is the Reverse Automatic Braking and the Highway Safety Kit for $100 and $105 respectively.

The Tahoe Premier is similar to the High Country but with the option for the smaller V-8 engine, and starts at $72,495, with a destination charge of $1,895.

The Premier trim comes standard with the 5.3-liter V-8 engine along with the larger 6.2-liter V8 and the 3.0-liter diesel engine as options. The interior is equipped with a power-sliding center console with an overhead power switch which enables the center console to smoothly slide back up to 10 inches, creating ample space between the front seats for accommodating larger items.

In its rearward position, the console provides access to a concealed storage drawer, offering a secure solution for keeping smaller items organized. Additionally, the design incorporates a manual sliding armrest for customizable comfort and functionality.

Instead of optional Adaptive Air Ride Suspension, the Tahoe Premier comes with Magnetic Ride Control which monitors each tire wheel individually adjusting suspension in real time. 20-inch aluminum wheels wrapped with all-season blackwall tires are standard. Other standard features include heated and power-adjustable exterior mirrors on the driver's side, with an auto-dimming function which are color-matched to the body for a seamless appearance.

Chevrolet tahoe z71.

The Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 is the most off-road capable trim of the line-up, with a starting price of $68,295, and a destination fee of $1,895.

The Z71 comes with a bunch of off-road adventure-ready external features including a front end with a higher approach angle, a metal skid plate, and bright red recovery hooks. The Z71 package improves upon the versatility of the Tahoe and makes it more capable than it already is.

The air ride adaptive suspension, which is only available on the High Country trim apart from the Z71, helps improve the ride comfort of the SUV, especially over rough surfaces. The Z71 variant boasts machined aluminum 20-inch wheels ensconced in 275/60 (33-inch) Goodyear Wrangler TrailRunner A/T tires, complemented by black assist steps and roof-mounted side rails.

For an additional $6,000, the Z71 Off-Road package consolidates the Luxury, Max Trailering, Driver Alert, and Off-Road Capability packages, streamlining the acquisition of numerous features with a single selection. Notably, this package introduces an electronically controlled limited-slip differential (eLSD), Magnetic Ride Control dampers, and adaptive air springs. It's important to note that the Z71 cannot be equipped with GM's Super Cruise hands-free driving system.

Chevrolet Tahoe LT

The Chevrolet Tahoe LT is one step above the bottom LS trim, with a base price of $64,595, with a destination price of $1,895.

One of the more affordable trims of the line-up, the LT trim comes with a bunch of standard features like heated front seats, a 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, and a hands-free tailgate. The only engine option is the 5.3-liter V8 which is more than capable for your daily requirements. The LT trim level offers an array of comfort enhancements.

Priced at $2,525, the Luxury package encompasses lane-departure warning, heated second-row seats, an HD surround-view camera, and a heated steering wheel. Additionally, there are two LT Signature packages, with the higher-tier option priced at $4,740. This premium package incorporates a panoramic power sunroof, all the components of the Luxury package, and the entirety of the Max Trailering package.

The Most Underrated Full-Size SUV Of 2023

The Base Variant Tahoe starts at a base variant of $59,095, with a destination price of $1,795.

The lowest trim is still a highly capable and affordable SUV with a roomy interior and a fair amount of convenient features. 18-inch silver aluminum wheels are standard with roof-mounted side rails, LED headlights, tail lights, and daytime running lights. Instead of the 10.2-inch infotainment screen, the LS comes with an 8-inch screen and a six-speaker audio system.

The Most Powerful Chevy Tahoe Ever Built: Chevrolet Tahoe RST

Channel your inner law enforcement official with the Chevrolet Tahoe RST, a Tahoe with the performance and handling chops of the Tahoe Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV). Priced from $64,195 for the two-wheel drive model with the base 5.8-liter gas V-8, the RST can also be equipped with a slightly more powerful 6.2-liter V-8 with an output of 433 horsepower and 467 pound-feet of torque. This makes the RST the fastest Tahoe ever created, which allows it to go from 0-60 MPH in 5.7 seconds. The top speed of the Tahoe RST maxes out at 124 MPH.

Other enhancements include springs with recalibrated dampers, and a larger stabilizer bar designed to meet police specifications. The chassis has been reinforced and brake performance tweaked to closely resemble the pursuit-ready Tahoe. F ord says 96 percent of its heavy-duty truck customers use their trucks to tow, so what better way to further enhance customer loyalty and increase market share than to make the 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty trucks even easier to tow with? As of this writing, we're only assured that payload and towing will be "best in class" without knowing the numbers. Along with all that beefing up come some pretty important upgrades to the trucks' tow technology package.

Pro Trailer Hitch Assist

Coming in spring 2023 is a new level of tow technology package functionality that allows the truck to align its hitch (bumper, gooseneck, or fifth-wheel) perfectly with the trailer's receiver (or pin). Prior to hitching up any trailer for the first time, the system questions the driver about hitch type, trailer length, etc. Then the driver simply positions the truck near the trailer and allows it to do its thing. Start too close and/or poorly aligned and the screen may instruct the driver to pull forward and engage reverse again, and results vary with lighting conditions, camera cleanliness, etc. But it can mean the difference between connecting a trailer in one go without a spotter, and jumping in and out of the truck numerous times. The system is also improved by another new optional feature: a camera and sensors that work when the tailgate is down.

Tailgate Down Camera and Reverse Sensing

Anyone who's stared at a close-up view of the road passing under a trailer hitch when the tailgate's down, not to mention endured the constant beeping of rear bumper sensors perceiving the gate as an obstacle, will appreciate Ford's claimed industry-first initiative to position four more ultrasonic sensors and a camera along the top of the tailgate. Activated only when the gate is down, they keep the driver aware of the vehicle's surroundings and preserve the 360-degree camera view. The camera and sensors are compatible with Ford's tailgate step (they're positioned off to the side of this step when so-equipped) and they're recessed slightly to protect them from any payload that may crash down onto the top of the tailgate. This system should prove especially valuable to those towing gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers when it's paired with yet another new Super Duty feature: a power-up and -down tailgate.

Power-Up and -Down Tailgate

A welcome spiff already introduced on the F-150's tow technology package is a remote controllable tailgate that can power itself up and down. This allows the driver to motor the gate down, use the above camera to position the truck under the trailer gooseneck, then power it closed again without ever leaving the driver seat. And yes, with an optional step and those extra sensors, this gate can get heavy, but the system is proving reliable on F-150, and Ford F-Series Super Duty tailgates are slightly shorter (to clear fifth-wheel trailers), and hence lighter.

Trailer Navigation

Headed into unfamiliar territory towing a particularly long or tall trailer? Drawing from an enhanced map database, the 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty's native navigation system can be programmed to select a route that ensures you'll never find yourself trying to negotiate a turn that's too tight or detour around a bridge that's too low for your rig.

Long-Trailer Blind-Spot Detection

Ford will offer remote blind-spot-detection sensors that can be hard-mounted to the trailer and wired into CAN-bus connection of the seven-pin trailer wiring harness so that the warning indicators on the mirrors illuminate when there's an obstacle in the lane adjacent to the trailer. Interestingly, the sensors must each be powered by the 12-volt power from a trailer running lamp, so the driver must engage the running lights for them to work.

360-Degree Trailer View

Ford offers a package of four cameras that can be mounted to a trailer to provide a 360-degree surround view, as well as a single camera to provide a selectable view of, for instance, the inside of a horse trailer. In all cases the camera images are carried on the CAN-bus feed through the seven-pin trailer wiring harness connector and presented on the infotainment screen, one at a time (360-degree truck or trailer view, but not both). There is no optional "invisible trailer" rear-view mirror option, however.

Intelligent Adaptive (NOT Blue) Cruise Control

The 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty features lane centering and automatic stop and go, and now adds automatic speed-limit sign detection that can alter your set speed when the legal limit rises or falls. But because Ford believes its customers demand hydraulic power steering assist rather than fully electric steering, Blue Cruise limited self-driving is not available and will not be a future upgradable option. But the 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty is designed to be the most upgradable Super Duty yet, so expect its tow technology package to improve over the years with over-the-air updates.
