The Ultimate French Quarter Guide to Christmas in New Orleans

During the holiday season in New Orleans, the city’s predilection for spectacle goes into overdrive. Here are some of the sights and shows that make for an unforgettable December visit, plus our picks on where to eat, including some of the best Reveillon dinners going on in the city.

What to See

Running of the Santas   — This annual event brings a pack of St. Nicholi (that’s a word, right?) to the Warehouse District , running from the “South Pole” ( Manning’s Sports Bar & Grill ) to the “North Pole” ( Generations Hall ). The boozy run is followed by the open bar and costume contest at Generations Hall. This year, the event falls on Sunday, December 10, 2023 (2-11 p.m.)

St. Louis Cathedral Concerts   — Throughout the month, some of the city’s greatest musicians, representing genres as varied as jazz, indie folk, zydeco, and gospel, put on shows in  St. Louis Cathedral , situated in the heart of Jackson Square . These free holiday concerts are open to the public and generally last for about an hour.

Krewe of Krampus   — Do you have a thing for the scary monster creatures from the Central European forests? Of course you do. Then you might want to check out the  Krewe of Krampus parade  through the Bywater (on Sunday, December 3, 2023 ). The parade starts at 7 p.m. on the corner of Royal and Lesseps streets by Parleaux Beer Lab, and ends at Bratz Y’All! (617-B Piety Street). Krampus and his army of mischief will be handing out lumps of coal and, most likely, behaving badly. New Orleans loves its counterculture holiday traditions!

Miracle on Fulton Street — The Fulton Street pedestrian corridor is transformed into a winter wonderland, whether the temperature is 40 degrees or in the mid-70s (not unheard of in this city in December). Light shows, enormous gingerbread displays, festive drinks, and general holiday illumination and goodwill will be present in enormous quantities. The event is free and open through December 26, 2023.

LUNA Fête   — During the weekend of December 7-10, 2023 , the LUNA Fête light show will illuminate the Convention Center , located within walking distance from the Quarter. The annual large-scale light and sound installations are breathtaking, and the fest is free and family-friendly.

Christmas Eve Bonfires  — On December 24 every year, bonfires will illuminate the levees on the opposite side of the Mississippi River . This is a Christmas tradition that likely dates back centuries; for more information on where to find the bonfires, contact your hotel concierge.

Holiday Concerts at St. Augustine Church   — One of the city’s oldest African American churches, located in the heart of the historic Tremé neighborhood, the gorgeous  St. Augustine Church   will host a few holiday concerts throughout the month of December. Feel the spirit at this intimate congregation, and enjoy music in the fantastic interior of this cornerstone of local heritage.

The holidays are a busy time of year anywhere, but in New Orleans, our events calendar becomes particularly packed with festive things.

Jackson Square caroling — Every year, the Patio Planters organization pulls together a choral extravaganza in Jackson Square, located at the heart of the historical French Quarter. Hundreds of candles illuminate the square as the annual caroling event renews itself. Song sheets and candles will be provided; the gates open at 6:30 p.m. and singing starts at 7 p.m., but we highly suggest you arrive early, as this is a very popular event (held on Sunday, December 17, 2023 , this year).

Ice skating  — Throughout December, the  New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center  will be decked out with a million Christmas lights for  NOLA Christmasfest , which will host an ice skating rink. We don’t often get to strap on skates in New Orleans, so expect to see a ton of locals sliding, slipping, and maybe even showing off some considerable skills on the all-too-rare ice.

Walk the French Quarter  — The holiday light displays in the French Quarter are nothing short of magical. We’d recommend strolling Royal Street and Chartres Street for the best lights. It gets dark by 6 p.m., which is a perfect time to take in a brisk walk and a good dinner.

Explore New Orleans residential architecture  — It’s always fun to explore the different architectural styles of New Orleans’ many historical and heritage residences. It’s even more fun to do so when those houses are decked out in all of their December finery. As such, try not to miss out on the annual  Holiday Home Tour , conducted by the  Preservation Resource Center  (2023 date TBA).

What to Eat

The Christmas King Cake is, truly, a brilliant invention, and the one that gives us King Cake in the season before Carnival. Because folks, you can never get enough King Cake. You can find Christmas King Cake at any local grocery or convenience store.

Derived from the French word for “awakening,” Reveillon originally was a meal served after midnight mass on Christmas Eve in Creole households. Today, the tradition has been refashioned into elaborate set-course meals served at some of the city’s finest eating establishments.

Some of the best Reveillon prix fixe dinners going on in the city include:

  • Arnaud’s  (813 Bienville Street)
  • Bayona (430 Dauphine Street)
  • Broussard’s   (819 Conti Street)
  • Court of Two Sisters  (613 Royal Street)
  • Dickie Brennan’s Steakhouse (716 Iberville Street)
  • Gabrielle Restaurant (2441 Orleans Avenue)
  • Galatoire’s  (209 Bourbon Street)
  • Luke  (333 St Charles Avenue)
  • Muriel’s Jackson Square  (801 Chartres Street)
  • Palace Caf é (605 Canal Street)
  • Rib Room (621 St. Louis Street)
  • Sylvain  (625 Chartres Street)
  • Tujague’s (823 Decatur Street)

What to Drink

If you’re visiting from up north, you may be a little bemused by how much New Orleanians bundle up on a “cold” 60-degree day, but hey, the experience of the weather is a relative. What should be recognized as a universal good thing is liquid ways of warming up during the New Orleans winter.

If you need a pick-me-up that also happens to act as an internal hot blanket, pick up a steaming café au lait from  Envie Espresso Bar & Cafe , which makes some of the finest coffee in the French Quarter. If you need a pick-me-up that will set you off in a not-quite-caffeinated but still pretty fun fashion, opt for a hot cocktail . New Orleanians tend to love traditional holiday drinks like mulled wine and hot buttered rum (the local version of the latter drink is always made with particular decadence).

Each year local bartenders create special holiday sippers to celebrate Reveillon on the Rocks . You can read about our favorite choices as we update them each year  here . Good seasonal cocktails will also be on the menu at many of the area’s best cocktail bars, including  Bar Tonique   and  Cane & Table , but even at casual Quarter dives, you’ll likely be able to score a nice frothy glass of “strong” eggnog — maybe not a hot drink per se, but sure to warm you up nonetheless.

Rudolph is great and all, but in South Louisiana, Christmas really calls for an alligator. Gaston the Gator joins Papa Noel for  Cajun Holiday Tea with Papa Noel on the Paddlewheeler Creole Queen  family-friendly outing. There’s holiday tea, face painting, costumed characters, and magic. (2023 dates TBA.)

The most decadent after-dinner drink in New Orleans — if not in the world, honestly — is café brûlot , a ridiculous concoction assembled from dark coffee, orange peel, lemon peel, cognac, brandy, cloves, cinnamon, sugar, and big old fireball. We’re not kidding: Café brûlot is made tableside by knowledgeable wait staff who put on what is frankly one of the great performances of gastronomic theater.

The end result is a citrusy, pleasantly spicy, very strong coffee drink that paradoxically works to knock you out  and  lift your spirits. It’s not necessarily a Christmas cocktail, but the flavor and look of the drink is  très  yuletide. You can find this drink at old-line restaurants like   Antoine’s ,  Arnaud’s  and  Galatoire’s . This crowd pleaser is also typically part of the Reveillon menu at the  Gumbo Shop .

Where to Shop

If you’re looking for unique gifts , the French Quarter is full of small shops and boutiques that simply cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Start at the  French Market  where you will find over six blocks of shopping with a wide assortment of gifts including spices, candy, cookbooks, one-of-a-kind art, fashion accessories, and home decor items.

Stroll down  Royal Street , particularly the pedestrian mall part, to find the right souvenir or keepsake for a loved one. Royal Street (and to a somewhat lesser degree, Chartres Street ) is filled with art galleries and antique stores , each business curated by creative professionals who impart their own unique aesthetic vision onto their goods.

Need a wig? Hey, we all need wigs, but we particularly need fabulously crafted wigs that represent the individual tastes of their creators and eventual owners — which is why we get the best wigs, and all sorts of other forms of beautiful accouterment, at  Fifi Mahony’s .

Retro dresses and vintage wear from the ‘40s and ‘50s are pretty much a fashion lock, and if you agree — c’mon, you know you’d look right in that belted polka dot number — head to  Trashy Diva , where fearless female fashion is the stock in trade.

Each December, the  Arts Market of New Orleans  holds its monthly public market at Palmer Park — an excellent opportunity to purchase a unique, locally made New Orleans gift. (2023 dates TBA.)

Also, check out the annual  Piety Market at Beanlandia holiday market  at 3300 Royal Street in Bywater. This market regularly attracts some of the city’s most creative artists and theater veterans, who come together to provide an utterly unique showcase of bohemian bric-a-brac. (2023 dates TBA.)

Finally, don’t forget that there’s a store in the French Quarter that is solely dedicated to Christmas year-round. Santa’s Quarters is where it’s basically Christmas all day, every day.

Where to Stay

During the holidays in New Orleans, many of the city’s Christmas festivities understandably revolve around the French Quarter. As such, if you want to be close to the holiday spirit, it makes sense to book accommodation where the best of the Quarter is at your fingertips.

The  French Market Inn  is positioned on Decatur Street , just blocks from Jackson Square, the lively upper end of Bourbon Street , and the busy thoroughfare that is Canal Street . Hotel St. Marie , on Toulouse Street , is located in the heart of the French Quarter right around the corner from some of the busiest blocks of Bourbon Street.

Between Dauphine and Bourbon streets,  Prince Conti Hotel  is positioned just a few blocks from the beginning of the Royal Street pedestrian area, an area that’s brilliant for slow strolling and shopping. And just around the corner from Jackson Square,  Place d’Armes  has easy access to both the nightlife of Bourbon Street and the galleries and shops of Royal and Chartres streets.

The year-round party vibe of New Orleans takes on an extra sparkle during the holiday season, and 2021 promises an enthusiastic return to the celebrations of years past. Christmas lights and decorations adorn homes and businesses, while the streets are filled with holiday music – with that distinctly Big Easy flair, of course.

From decked-out hotel lobbies and cathedral concerts to bonfires on the levee and Réveillon dinners introduced by French colonists that stretch into the wee hours, here are the best things to do during the holiday season in New Orleans.

New Orleans has implemented a strict COVID-19 safety plan that requires proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test to enter most public spaces. Read more about the city’s current COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines here .

A family walks through the lobby of The Roosevelt to look at Waldorf Wonderland, a block-long display of Christmas trees, white tree lights and other holiday decorations

Go hotel lobby hopping

Many of New Orleans’ higher-end hotels are famous for their over-the-top holiday decorations and seasonal events. In the Central Business District, the Windsor Court Hotel boasts a towering 20ft Christmas tree along with wreaths, garlands and several smaller trees trimming its expansive public spaces. Children can post letters to Santa at the hotel’s holiday mailbox and guests of all ages can soak up the scene with an elegant holiday tea.

At The Roosevelt , a block-long lobby display known as Waldorf Wonderland has been a holiday tradition since the 1930s. This year it has been expanded with thousands of additional lights and decorations, including 44 Christmas trees.

In the French Quarter, the Ritz-Carlton ’s artfully decorated lobby is a favorite of Instagrammers. The hotel’s jam-packed December calendar includes gingerbread builds, Papa Noël teas and holiday dinners. Other hotels known for their displays include the Hotel Monteleone , Harrah’s and the Bourbon Orleans . While you don’t have to be a guest to check out these decorations, many hotels do offer special Papa Noël rates during the holidays if you decide to stay.

Embrace musical merriment

It’s no surprise that the birthplace of jazz takes a musical approach to its holiday celebrations. From concerts to caroling, the December calendar is full of merry musical events throughout New Orleans. On the Sunday before Christmas (December 19), Caroling in Jackson Square is a free event that invites everyone to sing Christmas carols by the glow of candlelight – show up early to get a good spot.

Rather just listen? The St. Louis Cathedral hosts a free concert series featuring choirs, gospel singers, jazz musicians and more. Check New Orleans’ local events calendars for plenty more holiday concerts happening throughout the city, including a Creole Christmas series at the iconic Preservation Hall .

Winter light display for Celebration in the Oaks at a fountain at City Park in New Orleans

Be dazzled by the Celebration in the Oaks

Veer off the well-trodden tourist track and head to City Park for a beloved New Orleans Christmas family tradition. Celebration in the Oaks is one of the most spectacular holiday light displays in the country, featuring more than a million lights twinkling all around City Park. Though it’s usually a walking tour, visitors to this year’s event can choose between a 2.25-mile driving tour through the grounds or an all-access pass to the Carousel Gardens Amusement Park, which features 18 rides and a festive outdoor beer garden.

Indulge in a Réveillon dinner

New Orleans’ Réveillon (REV-ee-on) dinners date back to the 19th-century Creoles, who gathered for family feasts after midnight mass on Christmas Eve. Today’s celebrations take place at dozens of restaurants throughout the city, with many traditional dishes still featured on the decadent menus, from turtle soup and crawfish cakes to cornish game hen.

The fixed-price menus typically feature three or more courses, often offering tremendous value for diners. Be sure to book ahead to enjoy Réveillon revelry at classic French Quarter pillars like Arnaud’s and Galatoire’s , or the Garden District’s Commander’s Palace .

Go ice skating at NOLA Christmasfest

It’s not uncommon to see 70°F days in New Orleans in December, but you can still go ice skating – you’ll just have to head inside to do so. Now in its eighth year, NOLA Christmasfest is a family-friendly event at the New Orleans Convention Center that features ice skating, rides, ice slides, ice bocce and a Yuletide Market. This year’s Christmasfest features two sessions per day from December 17-22 and December 25-30 with timed entries designed to help manage crowds.

Christmas ornaments hang from a tree outside the front of a grand house in New Orleans

Take a Holiday Home Tour

The Christmas season presents a rare opportunity to peek inside some of the city’s grandest homes during New Orleans’ annual Holiday Home Tours . If you’re interested in homes of the Garden District, the Preservation Resource Center is hosting both virtual and in-person home and garden tours on December 11 and 12. In the French Quarter, the self-guided Patio Planters Holiday Home Tour takes place on December 19.

Warm up by a bonfire on the levee

Another holiday tradition dating back to Louisiana’s early Creole settlers, holiday bonfires light up the levees along the Mississippi River throughout the Christmas season. Some say the bonfires originated as a way to light the path to midnight mass; others claim they help Papa Noël find his way on Christmas Eve.

You’ll find most of the bonfires in surrounding parishes (counties), usually accompanied by music, warm bowls of gumbo and fireworks. The city’s only official holiday bonfire, the Algiers Bonfire and Concert, takes place in early December at Algiers Batture.

Accessible by the Algiers ferry, the event features music, food from local vendors and a holiday craft market, plus a 30ft sculptural bonfire created by the NOLA Burners. About an hour from the city, the Festival of the Bonfires in St. James Parish features carnival rides, food, entertainment, crafts, and nightly bonfires from December 10-12.

The 5 Best Christmas Displays in New Orleans

If you're planning a trip to New Orleans during the holiday season, you won't want to miss the many holiday displays throughout the city. From Thanksgiving through December, lights and decor festoon the city's oldest and most well-known parks. Inside the lobby of the historic Roosevelt Hotel, you'll be treated to an extravagant scene of twinkle lights and trees—a not-to-miss New Orleans tradition. Whether it's a festival or a solo stroll through one of NOLA's decorated quarters, the city has many a festive spectacle to witness.

Celebration in the Oaks

Infrogmation of New Orleans / CC / Flickr

Celebration in the Oaks began as a small fundraiser for the New Orleans Botanical Gardens, but it has since evolved into one of the area's most magnificent holiday light displays. This extravagant celebration kicks off on Thanksgiving and lasts until January 3, 2021. It funds part of City Park's annual budget and draws more than 165,000 visitors annually. With century-old oak trees as the backdrop, the display includes attractions like an antique wooden carousel and miniature train park tours. This season, group tours have been replaced by a self-driving tour.

Roosevelt Hotel's Waldorf Wonderland

Those who grew up in New Orleans probably have fond memories of walking through the Roosevelt Hotel 's lobby in December. The lobby itself runs the length of an entire city block and, years ago, the ceiling was adorned with angel hair and colored lights. Today, the more modern decor still evokes a sense of wonder, as thousands of white lights cover the lobby and twinkling birch trees line the entryway. If you plan to visit on Christmas Day, the hotel serves a noteworthy Christmas brunch. Reservations fill up quickly, though, and prices reflect the luxuriousness of the hotel .

NOLA ChristmasFest

Located in the New Orleans Convention Center, NOLA ChristmasFest is a multi-day, indoor festival featuring ice skating, snowball fights, rock climbing, ice sliding, and other family-friendly activities. The event traditionally takes place during the last two weeks of December, and Santa makes an appearance during the first week. In 2020, however, the in-person event has been canceled and replaced with a host of online programming—holiday crafts, baking, dance classes, nightly book reading with iconic characters, and more.

Canal Street Holiday Celebration

Canal Street's Home for the Holidays event offers a series of family-centric activities for visitors throughout the month of December. Canal Street—a wide expanse that separates the French Quarter and the American Sector—is beautifully decorated every year. Activities typically include a Christmas parade, outdoor movies, a block party, and themed races like the Reindeer Run and Romp and Eggnog Jog. The event is held by the Downtown Development District. In 2020, it's been canceled.

Miracle on Fulton Street

black.stilettos / CC / Flickr

Fulton Street—located in the Warehouse and Arts Districts of New Orleans—is a pedestrian-friendly mall lined with restaurants and shops. During the holidays, this street comes alive with beautiful decor, featuring faux snow, a Christmas tree, a holiday boardwalk, and a visit from Santa. Dates are released on their website each year, including the best time to view the lighting display. In 2020, however, Miracle on Fulton Street has been canceled.

FESTIVALS AND SPECIAL EVENTS

New Orleans has countless holiday activities, winter festivals, and special events and they are suitable for people of all ages.

Some are especially good for children, like Teddy Bear Teas.

We list these very kid-friendly activities toward the end of this section. Click here to jump down in the post.

Jackson Square Caroling

One of the most popular holiday events in New Orleans is the Jackson Square Caroling , a holiday tradition since 1946.

The gates to Jackson Square open at 6:30 p.m. on December 22nd, 2024. Caroling begins at 7 p.m.

Song sheets and candles are provided to all who choose to participate in the holiday gathering.

This is a very popular event, so you are strongly advised to arrive early if you want to be able to participate and not just watch from afar.

TIP:  While you are there, explore the area before or after the carols with our Jackson Square self-guided tour !

Bonfires on the Levee on Christmas Eve

Dating back to the earliest Cajun settlers, this tradition involves the creation of huge bonfires along the Mississippi River on Christmas Eve.

Most bonfires are set up in communities adjoining communities of Gramercy, Lutcher, and Paulina in St. James Parish, about 30-40 miles upriver from New Orleans.

Granted it is not easy for those without a car to see this incredible expansive stretch of bonfires.

Grayline Tours used to conduct two coach tours in the month of December, details of 2024 are yet to be announced.

See above to find out about these tours.

Algiers Bonfire

Early each December, the neighborhood of Algiers hosts a bonfire on the bank of the Mississippi River at the levee at 200 Morgan St. on the West Bank.

There will be bands, food vendors, and a festive atmosphere. You just need to bring yourself, a blanket to sit on and enjoy the night with the locals.

2024 dates TBD. Last year the event was scheduled for December 2nd. Check their website  for additional details.

The Festival of the Bonfires  gives you three chances to see some bonfires!

In modern times, several local restaurants serve up large meals of their own in honor of this wonderful custom.

Learn more about these meals on both our pay-what-you-wish   Creole Christmas Tour and our pay-what-you-wish   French Quarter Food Tour .

Although some of these locations stick to the traditional fare, others experiment with new and different kinds of food.

Prices range from $30-$60 per person.

The Krewe of Jingle Parade

Watch as fun, festive floats, and marching bands roll down Canal Street during this yearly holiday event.

If you are not familiar with what a Krewe is, read our post on  Mardi Gras Krewes and Parades .

NOLA Christmas Fest

This family-friendly festival has an indoor ice skating rink, carnival rides, ice slides, a carousel, and inflatables to jump on.

There are plenty of Christmas lights and decorations. Children can also enjoy a Gingerbread House exhibit and take photos with Santa.

Best Things to Do in December in New Orleans

Beth D'Addono

LAST UPDATED BY Beth D'Addono November 30, 2021

It may not be on everybody's top 10 Christmas song list, but in  New Orleans , there's no better holiday tune than the brassy  Christmas in New Orleans  by Louis Armstrong, circa 1955. By Thanksgiving, the Crescent City pulls out all the stops with lights, glitter and holiday pageantry.  Visitors will find plenty of only-in-New Orleans ways to celebrate, kicking off with a month of Creole-inspired Reveillon dinners to towering bonfires that light up the bayou across and up the river.

Many of the parks around the city are filled with carolers during December, but the most spectacular spot has to be caroling in Jackson Square, usually the Sunday before Christmas. With St. Louis Cathedral as a backdrop, voices raised and candles glowing, there really is "joy to the world."

Take in the over the top lobby decorations at the Roosevelt Hotel, Windsor Court and the Ritz Carlton on Canal, along with the still family-owned Hotel Monteleone, home to a giant Christmas tree and a busy schedule of local choir performances.  There are holiday house tours both Uptown (Dec. 14,15) and in the French Quarter (Dec. 22).  This city of artists offers untold opportunities for truly unusual gift buying, whether along Magazine Street, Royal in the Quarter, the French Market or the night art market on Frenchmen Street.  Like everything else it does, New Orleans dances to its own beat during the holiday season.

St. Louis Cathedral

St. Louis Cathedral

Come make a joyful noise this December with carolling Dec. 20 in Jackson Square, along with holiday concerts in the cathedral Dec. 1-18. Produced by French Quarter Festivals, Inc. as part of Christmas New Orleans Style, the music generally runs for an hour, starting at 6 pm. Music styles range from gospel to Cajun and jazz, with performers including Susan Cowsill, Sunpie Barnes and and the Original Tuxedo Jazz Band. This year's dates are Dec. 1-18. Established in 1720, this is the oldest active cathedral in the US. In 1964, the cathedral was given the status of minor basilica, one of only 15 in the US.

Recommended for Things to Do in December because : St. Louis Cathedral is an iconic symbol of the city of New Orleans.

Beth's expert tip : The concerts are free of charge, but donations are welcome to help fund the series.

Bonfires on the Levee

Bonfires on the Levee

Nothing like dancing around a roaring 20-foot high bonfire to get into the Christmas spirit. The tradition of lighting bonfires on the river levees dates back to the earliest Cajun settlers of the regions of southern Louisiana to the west and north of New Orleans. The idea is to light the away for "Papa Noel," the Cajun Santa Claus, on his airborne journey to the area. Most of the 100 or so towering infernos are set in communities in St. James Parish some 30-40 miles upriver from New Orleans. Closer to home, the Algiers Economic Development Foundation sponsors one annually,- this year December 4, 5-8:30 pm - on the levee in Algiers Point.

Recommended for Things to Do in December because : Cajun tradition rules at this annual holiday event up and across the river.

Beth's expert tip : Grayline Tours offers bus trips to the levee bonfires that include a plantation tour.

Reveillon Dinners

Reveillon Dinners

Leave it to New Orleans to give an old Creole holiday custom a deliciously modern spin. In this historically Catholic city, Reveillon (French for awakening) dinners were elaborate family feasts served after midnight mass on Christmas Eve. A typical menu might include eggs Sardou, turtle soup, oysters and grillades of veal, all accompanied by much toasting, well into the wee hours. Although the practice all but disappeared in the 1940s, local chefs, including Donald Link and Emeril Lagasse revived the celebration in the 1990s, and typically as many as 40 local restaurants offer seasonal holiday Reveillon menus during December. The oysters pictured are on the menu at Arnaud's. Many restaurants offer, including Antoine's, Broussard's, Country Club and Ralph's on the Park.

Recommended for Things to Do in December because : This revisited Creole custom is unique to New Orleans during the holidays.

Beth's expert tip : Expect to pay $50 and up for most Reveillon (say REH-vee-on) menus.

This month-long holiday light exhibit in City Park draws hordes of families and visitors up for a festive good time. Take a driving tour through the park to see more than a million lights decorating century-old live oak trees. Celebration in the Oaks is a New Orleans family tradition that's also a fund raiser for the park. Tickets are $39.99 per vehicle - up to eight passengers, or splurge on a limo for 15/$150. Hotel lobby hop during the holidays

Hotel lobby hop during the holidays

Visiting hotel lobbies during the holidays is a thing in New Orleans. Really. Gaggles of ladies hire a driver to shuttle them around from hotel to hotel, so they can day drink champagne with impunity and gawk at the Christmas finery that festoons the lobbies of hotels in the French Quarter and CBD. Topping the list? The Roosevelt is beyond gorgeous, with its acres of marble and seasonal display of lights, trees and hand tied bows (bless their heart). The Windsor Court is a must see, with its 19 1/2-foot Christmas tree shimmering with 25,000 lights,a classic toy train traveling around the base. There's 10 more trees to eyeball, adding up to more holiday cheer. Holiday tea is especially popular here. The new Four Seasons is another must, with its Festive celebration that includes thousands of twinkling lights and the awesome Chandelier Bar, perfect for toasting. That's enough bling to jump start even the Grinch's holiday spirit.

Recommended for Things to Do in December because : Drinking and lobby gawking is a New Orleans tradition,

Beth's expert tip : When you book a hotel during the holidays ask about the Papa Noel special - there are deals galore city wide.

The New Orleans Christmas season isn’t complete without one of Louisiana’s oldest traditions, Christmas Eve Bonfires. According to legend, early Cajun settlers lit bonfires on the Mississippi River to light the way for “Papa Noel,” the Cajun Santa Claus. These simple bonfires evolved throughout the centuries to become elaborate events, with some bonfires as high as 20 feet!

On Christmas Eve, communities all around New Orleans head to the levee to enjoy the bonfires. While you are welcome to just pull up and enjoy the view, we recommend a guided tour to experience this beloved tradition. Day 1: Explore, Discover, Immerse NOLA

23/12 You have either arrived in NOLA late on the 22nd or will likely be at your hotel by noon on the 23rd. Once you are settled if you are a fan of Anne Rice’s Interview with a Vampire, I suggest you take a walking tour of the Garden District. Assuming you are based in or around the French Quarter you can hop on the streetcar for a fun, sightseeing ride on the way. If you are interested in history & architecture I highly recommend Two Chicks for a fun, small group and highly informative tour. you can wander around on your own but I particularly enjoyed learning all about the design and building of several majestic historical homes and their famous and infamous residents. For an early afternoon snack I suggest visiting Grace bakery or District Donuts . For a more complete lunch head to the highly rated Coquette or Atchafalaya . To satisfy your sweet cravings don’t miss Sucré . After lunch head back to your hotel should you need to rest from a long flight. Otherwise enjoy exploring the lively French Quarter, which will be dressed at its finest for the festive season and make your way to Jackson Square where artists and performers put on shows daily and even more so during the holidays! The square is lined with beautiful Historic buildings so you can grab some Beignets (not to be missed) from nearby Cafe du Monde and sit and watch the world go by for a little while. Dining options in the neighborhood are endless but I suggest the Gumbo shop for something casual and Muriel’s for a higher priced, atmospheric alternative (they also have a hidden bar!). After dinner you should opt for one of the Ghost, Vampires and Voodoo walking tours . It may sound and appear touristy but it truly is a fun way to learn about the gritty and haunting history (fact or fiction? You decide!) of Louisiana. You will never walk these streets again the same way!

Day 2: Plantations, Bonfires, Dining

24/12 Christinas Eve: Some Plantations, Tours and historical homes still operate today so I recommend making this your excursion day! You can join a small group tour or If you have a car you can drive and experience a combined visit to the gorgeous (especially at Christmas) Oak Alley named after its beautifully preserved Ancient Oak lined driveway, the colourful Laura and the Whitney Plantations. The Whitney is not to be missed, it tells the story through the point of view of the enslaved and educates the public in a non biased and heartbreaking way as to the history of slavery in the US. At Oak Alley make sure to try the Buttermilk Pie, you are going to want the recipe! This day trip can include a Swamp Tour either by kayak or by air boat. You can admire the unique landscapes but December is not the best season to watch alligators. The climate is mild for humans but for the alligators it's still too cold and they are mostly in hiding! There are several companies and times available to suit your schedule. Your alternative plantation visit is a bit further away. Houmas House and Gardens is a Greek Revival Mansion and hosts a combo of traditional and Modern art. They go all out with holiday decor (both inside the house and in the gardens) which may include giant rubber duckies dressed with Santa hats! Festive creole lunch can be included in your visit. Christmas Eve is special in New Orleans as it is bonfire night on the levee. Several bonfires are lit along the Mississippi River to guide Santa Claus on his way to New Orleans. This tradition dates back to the early 1800s, and it is a unique and beautiful way to celebrate the holiday season. You can observe them here .

If you opt for a more traditional experience, I suggest dining at one of the several restaurants which are open. Emeril’s can provide a festive Reveillon dinner or attend the a more casual experience at Willa Jean. I highly recommend making reservations in advance.

Day 3: Christmas - Exploration, Cruise, Lights

25/12 On Christmas day most historic houses and tours will be unavailable so make sure you check these off the list within your first two days. After breakfast take a leisurely stroll through the French Quarter as you head to the waterfront. The streets will be unusually quiet and will present a great opportunity to take photos of the beautifully decorated buildings. For something different to a traditional family Christmas Lunch opt for a holiday themed cruise, with lunch optional, aboard Steam Boat Sanchez. You will sail along the Mississippi River for about 2 hours where you will enjoy endless views of New Orleans and the surrounding area, while listening to a live jazz band and caroling along the way. You will be making a difference this Christmas as every guest, regardless of age, must bring a toy for donation before they board (toys will be donated to Toys for Tots) If you opt not to have lunch on board, dining options for the 25th include Compère Lapin , the Rib Room and most upmarket hotel restaurants such as Jack Rose , The Chloe and the R’evolution. I suggest making advanced reservations. If you already had lunch you can head to the Roosevelt (Waldorf Astoria) to admire the spectacular Christmas lights and decor where you can enjoy a hot chocolate and dessert at the bar. It doesn't get much more festive than this! Head back to your hotel for a bit of rest before venturing out again in the late afternoon. This time you will be heading to the enchanting City Park which hosts the annual fundraising event, Celebration in the Oaks . The park is lit up by over a million twinkling lights through the 2.25 mile Driving Tour and the Reimagined Walking Tour. Your pass will also include access to unlimited amusement park rides as well as to the elegant Botanical Garden. Experiencing the event at twilight will give you the best of both worlds, watching the Christmas lights take centre stage as soon as the sun is gone. Book your tickets ahead of time to secure your desired time slot! Once you’ve spent enough time in the park head back to the French Quarter and give the creole cuisine a go at Criollo, a refined brasserie inside the historic Monteleone hotel. Make sure to grab a drink at the classic, Carousel Bar named after is revolving bar! Now thats a Christmas day you won’t forget!

Day 4: Wrap Up!

26/12 Your flight is most likely early in the morning in order to get to your next destination in preparation for New Years plans, or back to work for some! If so, enjoy a warm waffle and berries for breakfast at your hotel and head to the airport!

The weather will be fabulous! Possibly a light jacket or even a coat. You will need to stay on top of the weather right before you pack.

It is a busy time. You have the Christmas people staying after Christmas, you have the New Year's Eve people coming in. You have the football crowd coming in for the Sugar Bowl. It's very festive, the whole town, especially the French Quarter. Reservations will be needed at any restaurant that takes Reservations. Lots of families, I observed during this week.

We love Mr. Bs across the street for a nice lunch or dinner. I’m not sure a trip has gone by when we missed it.

Dickie Brennans is also catty corner, Acme and Felix’s about two blocks away. And Cafe Beignet is down the block as well. Lots of places close by if you find taxi/ Uber to busy.

Our first trip to NOLA was about 33 years ago and we went the week after Christmas. The city will forever be special for us! Enjoy.

Bucket list on a budget: Travel New Orleans without breaking the bank

VIDEO: Take a bucket list trip to New Orleans and stay on budget

The Big Easy is a bucket list destination for fun-seekers. With live music and jazz echoing through the streets, delicious French and Creole cuisine -- serving everything from beignets and po' boy sandwiches to French 75 cocktails -- there's an abundance of must-do activities in New Orleans.

trip new orleans christmas

But living it up in the Crescent City can get costly if you're not careful, so "Good Morning America" scoped out the best way to enjoy bayou country on a budget.

If you're pinching pennies, see all the ways you can still let the good times roll, below.

trip new orleans christmas

Getting there

Airfare prices to New Orleans, like most destinations, can vary depending on the time of year, but in the beginning of June for example, roundtrip fares from Chicago O'Hare International Airport can be found for under $145 on Spirit Airlines, and for $45 more -- around $189 -- American Airlines has similar flights that include a carry on item for no fee.

Where to stay

Look at hotel membership programs before you book your stay.

An IHG One Rewards account gets guests a slightly cheaper rate: A room at the Hotel Indigo, for instance, is priced at $129 per night for members, $7 less than the typical rate.

Travel expert Clint Henderson, managing editor at The Points Guy, told "GMA" that "among the perks you can potentially get just for being a member in a loyalty program are free Wi-Fi, late checkout and even room upgrades."

"In the case of IHG, specifically, you unlock member discounts by booking via their website as opposed to an online travel agent," he said.

Eat like a local

trip new orleans christmas

There's no shortage of delicious New Orleans restaurant options from legendary chefs like Emeril Lagasse or Nina Compton, but if you're looking to save, check out specials and find some go-to spots that locals love.

At the famed, family-run Parkway Bakery, one of the oldest po' boy shops in the city and known for its fresh baked bread, visitors can enjoy an array of stuffed oversized sub-like sandwiches for as little as $7. And if you can agree on the fillings and toppings, sharing a full size po' boy like the classic flash-fried Louisiana wild-caught Gulf shrimp comes in at just $7.70 each for two people.

trip new orleans christmas

Plus, May through July is peak crawfish season, and local eateries like Clesi's Seafood Restaurant & Catering have an abundance of the freshwater crustacean for just $8.50 per pound. The restaurant offers weekly specials as well like $3 taco Tuesday and free fry basket Friday, and gives customers a complimentary order of french fries tossed in a house-made parmesan garlic butter with the purchase of a pitcher of beer.

trip new orleans christmas

It wouldn't be a visit to New Orleans without satisfying your sweet tooth with beignets. The renowned Cafe du Monde serves up the deep-fried pâte à choux pastry, which is doused in powdered sugar, in orders of three for just $3.85 -- but don't forget, it's cash only.

Getting around the city

Skip the cabs or rideshare apps and pick up a Jazzy Pass to use public transit for just $3 a day.

The card includes unlimited rides on the ferry, bus and street cars, providing a unique view of the city.

Listen to the music

trip new orleans christmas

You'll never miss a beat in the jazz-filled French Quarter. Entertainment is free, but be sure to pack some small bills and tip your favorite artists as you enjoy the historic area.

The New Orleans Jazz Museum also hosts free afternoon concerts Tuesday through Friday.

Venture outside the city center

Look for activities, tours and other attractions from the local tourism board to book unique deals.

Plus, Groupon has offers on more than 40% off the Jean Lafitte Swamp Tour.
