Lake Como Italy Itinerary Overview

Before you jump into this amazing Lake Como Italy Itinerary and vist this amazing Italian landmark , let’s talk about trip planning and make sure you are prepared for the best experience. I highly recommend coming to Lake Como with a well-defined Lake Como itinerary with the top things you want to visit, see and do, in order to maximize your time here. Yeah, it’s the same for most major cities in Italy, like Rome .

The good news is that if you are short on time, you can visit Lake Como in as short a trip from Milan , or if you have more time, I recommend at least 3 days in Lake Como to get the best out of your trip. However, I understand if you can only manage to spend 2 days in Lake Como.

Make sure you choose accommodation in a good area , where you can easily walk around and explore the main attractions. Making your reservations in advance is also part of a well-planned visit, as Lake Como is a popular destination and it may be hard to find last-minute accommodations.

Lastly, I recommend  booking your tickets to attractions in advance , such as a boat tour of Lake Como , as the city is very busy throughout the year. The advantage of a guided tour is that you will spend a short time in line, and with a local guide, you will learn and appreciate Lake Como’s history better.

How To Get To Lake Como

For centuries, Lake Como has been a glamorous resort for the rich and famous, but catching a glimpse of your celebrity should be the least attractive thing in Italy’s most famous lake. The lake itself is shaped like an inverted ‘Y’ and comprises picturesque little towns set against imposing mountains, rolling hills, and dramatic natural scenery.

The easiest way to get to Lake Como is from Milan. The southern shore of Lake Como is about 51 km (32 miles) from Milan, and the journey is usually a 40-minute train ride. To get to Lake Como from Milan , take a train from Milano Centrale to either Varenna-Esino or Como San Giovanni. The trains run every hour, check the schedule and tickets here .

This isn’t the only option available, there are other options, such as taking the bus or renting a car to make the drive yourself. Or you can hire a private driver or go on a day trip tour from Milan . Just be sure to find a way to make even a one-day Lake Como itinerary happen since this place is absolutely stunning.

Lake Como Itinerary: 1-3 Days in Lake Como

Day 1 lake como itinerary: explore the best of como.

Take your first day on this Lake Como itinerary to explore its biggest town. Como is a magnificent city known for its Gothic Cathedral, lakefront promenades, delightful streets, stunning mountain views, scenic funicular rides, and amazing piazzas.

The Piazza Cavour is the town square with many restaurants and cafés, Piazza San Fedele was originally a wheat market and hosts the beautiful 12th-century Romanesque church; Basilica di San Fedele. If you are visiting Lake Como for the first time, I recommend finding accommodation here .

You can also start your day with a delicious brunch at Babi Como. It’s a great place to begin a day in Lake Como since this epic eatery is located right in the center of town. Plus, it is brimming over with incredible, pastel-pink decor that makes it an epic place for photos.

However, aside from the ambiance, the food is also delicious. In particular, the margaritas and Eggs Benedict are top-notch. Plus, this restaurant is super kid-friendly and they take cards too. After brunch, there is so much to do and see in Como. So, here are some attractions you don’t want to miss:

1. Marvel at the Como Cathedral

⏰ Opening Hours: Mon-Fri from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm

📸 How to Visit it: Free to visit | The Como Cathedral is located near Lake Como, within the magnificent setting of Piazza Duomo.

The Como Cathedral is one of the most magnificent buildings to behold on the entire Lake Como. This 14th-century Roman architecture is nothing short of awe-inspiring and spectacular. The cathedral is from 1396 and it took almost 400 years to build it! Besides its age, this cathedral is in excellent condition, and it is a great place to start your Lake Como Itinerary.

The Catholic Cathedral is an exotic structure with stunning gothic designs, a tour of this impressive Cathedral will most certainly leave you in awe. Pay attention to the mosaic artwork on the ceilings and the stunning stainless glass windows. Most of the sculptures on the façade are made in the Gothic style , but some of them have Renaissance features.

Lake Como Itinerary

2. Stroll through the Piazza del Duomo and Broletto

After visiting the cathedral, spend some time exploring the Piazza del Duomo. A stroll through the beautiful streets of Como city and a tour of the Cathedral wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the remarkable trade center; Piazza del Duomo.

And just by the Cathedral and the Bell Tower is the ancient Broletto , an old town hall that was once used for hosting public assemblies. It was built in the Gothic-Romanesque and Renaissance style, while elements of the façade date back to the fifteenth century. When I visited it, the streets were nearly empty, offering an excellent opportunity to admire the buildings, and take pictures.

Nowadays, Villa Olmo is home to a museum with exhibitions, gardens that are open daily for visitors, plus a pool and café.

This was one of my favorite places to visit in Lake Como, and should definitely be on your Lake Como itinerary. And if you like photography, you can spend a couple of hours exploring and taking great photos.

6. Optional: The Life Electric Monument

If you have time, add the Life Electric Monument to this Lake Como in a day itinerary. It’s easily one of the most unusual things to do in Lake Como and is a quirky sculpture, by Daniel Libeskind, that was finished in 2015.

It won’t take you too long to visit since you’re just having a look. But, it’s a great place for some photos as you gaze out onto the water.

It’s also a contemporary piece of art that was created as a gift to Como by the artist. So, stop by during your Lake Como 3 days itinerary and see if you can figure out the real meaning behind this statue of two sine waves facing one another.

The second day of your 3-day Lake Como Itinerary will probably be the busiest, and I am giving you excellent details of some of the most fantastic places to visit in Lake Como. But it is also, one of the most popular destinations in Lake Como – so I recommend arriving early to avoid the crowds.

I suggest that you start your day 2 with a boat tour of the astounding Lake Como . The best place to begin your boat tour is at Bellagio, and prepare to momentarily lose your breath during the tour. The views are splendid! If you are planning to stay in Bellagio, I recommend reading this article about the top accommodations.

1. Stop at Bellagio

Your next stop should be the beautiful and compact town of Bellagio. This town is small and studded with delightful cobblestoned streets, colorful houses, lovely little shops and restaurants, and wonderful views of the lake.

Bellagio can be visited in half day, and while you’re there, here are my suggestions of what to do:

Piazza San Giorgio is the town center and home to a magnificent 13th-century Romanesque and Gothic-style church, the Church of San Giorgio . The church was built on a small temple dating back to the 12th century and reworked in later periods, it was rediscovered after several restorations in the second half of the 20th century as an example of  Lombard medieval architecture .

When you visit the interior you will notice that the church is preserved with some frescoes dating from the thirteenth century. The floor is made of Varena’s black marble, just stunning!

Just opposite that, you will find the San Giovanni Battista , a smaller and much older church. San Giovanni Battista is the first church built in Varenna and one of the oldest in Lake Como, dating back to the 11th century.

A visit to the stunning hotel Villa Cipressi should follow your amazing experience at the Villa Monastero. Villa Cipressi literally means “house of cypresses” and it’s named so because of the beautiful ancient cypress trees in the garden. The entire villa is surrounded by a magical terraced garden, which is fortunately open for public tours.

The Villa Cipressi enchants visitors with its botanical gardens overlooking Lake Como. The entire building is actually nestled in a large green space right alongside the shores of the lake itself. The charming lakeside promenade with the suggestive name “Walk of Lovers” is very popular among visitors and for good reasons. It’s a scenic boardwalk built over the lake, with the shimmering waters of Lake Como to the left and rocky walls and a beautiful garden to the right.

It is a short pedestrian path that leads from the wharf of Varenna to the center of the village; a footbridge of a few hundred meters jutting out onto the water from which it is possible to admire the lake, the mountains, and the stunning colorful houses perched at the foot of the rocky wall.

The beautiful hike to the castle is certainly worth it and rewards you with the best views of this Lake Como Itinerary. The castle dates back to the 11th century and is an important historic site.

Explore the castle is something you don’t want to miss during your Lake Como itinerary. It is considered one of the most beautiful hikes in Italy , offering amazing opportunities for some impressive shots and relaxation at the hilltop café. The hike is not long and it can be done in only 30 minutes, with approximately 1 mile long only and it has signs clearly marked along the trail.

If you decide to visit the Thousand years old castle, make sure you look for the impressive handmade ghost statues that surround the castle.

Lake Como things to do

13. Stop at Orrido di Bellano

⏰ Opening Hours: Summertime is open daily from 10:00 am to 7 pm

📸 How to Visit it: € 3.00  per person and you can buy your ticket online .

Orrido di Bellano is a hidden gem natural canyon with an old suspension bridge and a turquoise river flowing below. The scenic walk along a suspended walkway with the thunderous sound of the waterfall below is certainly worth it. From Varenna to Bellano is a 5-minute train, ferry, or taxi ride.

This incredible natural gorge was created 15 million years ago by the erosion of the River Pioverna and the Adda glacier which, over the centuries, have shaped the rock into gigantic potholes, dark ravines, and suggestive caves.

If you are planning to have dinner in Varena I recommend the Bar Il Molo , for breath-taking views overlooking the landscapes of Lake Como.

lake como europe trip

14. Optional Stop at Nesso

If you have extra time during your three days in Lake Como itinerary, you could visit Nesso which is an amazing local waterfall. It’s well-located near Bellagio and is about a 36-minute drive away.

Just note that if you are using Google to find this spot then you might drive right past it since it is mislabeled. So, be on the lookout for signage that says “Orrido di Nesso” as you approach the area. This cute little place should be right near the road.

There is also very limited parking so leave your car a bit far away and be prepared for a walk to the waterfall. However, if it’s easier you could just take a boat from Lecco directly to Nesso during your itinerary for Lake Como.

Upon arrival, follow signs that will have you descend a set of rocky stairs that will lead to a swimming area where locals like to relax. Be forewarned that that water is cold, even in warmer months. So, definitely bring a towel to help you warm up.

On the third and last day of your Lake Como 3-day Itinerary, I recommend that you take some time to explore Menaggio and Tremezzo . Make sure you book a boat tour in advance – you have the option to go on a private or group tour.

Menaggio is an awesome historic lakeside town in Lake Como, it’s one of the largest on the western shore of the lake. This beautiful town is best known for its quaint square and elegant lake promenade. If you are staying in Menaggio, don’t forget to check the best accommodations here . Here’s a list of what to do:

1. Wander through Via Calvi and Visit the Church of Santa Marta

Next, head up to the medieval part of the town. This part of Menaggio is higher up in the hills, and you will have to follow a stepped path and walk through narrow alleys and ancient buildings.

Taking a walk through the old town of Menaggio is akin to taking a walk back in time. Finally, follow Via Strecium to take a walk over the Senagra Stream and enjoy the sound of the cascading waterfall below.

5. Stop At Tremezzo

Continuing your Lake Itinerary, the next stop is Tremezzo. It is only a 9-minute bus ride from Menaggio. Or you can take a ferry departing from Menaggio and arriving at Tremezzo, with services that depart hourly, and operate every day. The journey takes approximately 50 min. Or you can hire a private taxi boat to take you.

What are the best tows to visit during your Lake Como Itinerary?

Lake Como is the third largest lake in the country and one of the top Landmarks in Italy to add to your bucket list. It is very easy to visit from a short 1-hour trip from Milan or Malpensa Airport.

It is an easy 10-minute downhill walk from the train station to the boat dock. It is also the best place to stay in Lake Como if you are planning to visit the other villages around the lake, and the boats and ferries operate all year long, with departures from Como to the parts of the Lake. Como is a magnificent city known for its Gothic Cathedral, lakefront promenades, delightful streets, stunning mountain views, scenic funicular rides, and amazing piazzas.

Bellagio is considered the “Pearl of Lake Como” and it is probably the most famous town in Lake Como. Bellagio is located at a picturesque junction where the Y-shaped lake divides into two branches. It is a quiet and small town that can be visited in only a few hours. Some boat tours stop here for a quick visit, while others will only pass through this village.

Varenna is a picturesque and traditional village, located on the eastern shore of Lake Como, Italy, and it is an essential stop for anyone wishing to visit one of the most   typical and quiet towns on the lake.

Tremezzo is the best Region in Lake Como for families. This beautiful small town is centrally located in Lake Como. It sits on the western shores of the lake, across from Bellagio and just south of Menaggio, and is most well-known for its stunning waterfront and splendid botanical garden.

Many people consider the steep hillside village of Varenna to be the most heavenly of all the towns on Lake Como, preferring the charming fisherman’s houses to the showier villas and grandeur of neighbors like Bellagio

Menaggio is a town with very ancient origins and in its historical center, characterized by a beautiful central square and a splendid lakeside promenade, there is no lack of important artistic heritage, all to be discovered.

This is a great place to spend your time, all within one of the most charming towns of Lake Como. The beach is suitable for the whole family, with   two swimming pools and some games for children.

If you are looking for some hidden gems around Lake Como, you can also visit some uninhabited areas like Isola Comacina or meander down the Adda River which branches off south from Lecco.

In this area, the number of tourists drops off substantially, and you will be able to explore these areas without having to share with the crowds, but make sure you hire a private Lake Como boat tour if are planning a visit.

What to Pack for your Lake Como Italy Itinerary

I visited Lake Como in July, and it is hot during summertime. If you are also visiting during the hot months, think about light clothes and comfortable shoes to walk and explore during the day. Leave your pair of high heels at home, as the villages are hilly, and you won’t need them.

Don’t forget your sunblock , and sunglasses and consider a hat too. If you are planning to go on a boat tour at Lake Como , bring your bathing suit 😉

For the evening, especially if you are planning to have dinner at one of the nice restaurants, you can think about a comfortable summer dress and sandals . Or if you are not into dresses, a pair of jeans and a nice top and a nice pair of sandals .

The climate can be mild in Lake Como, because of its location close to the Alps, so consider bringing a pashmina for the evening.

Best Things to Do in Lake Como You Can’t Miss

1. wander through the streets of bellagio.

Bellagio is one of my all-time favorite towns in Lake Como . With its picturesque streets, colorful buildings, and stunning views of the lake, it really looks like it came straight from a postcard.

There are many fantastic things to do in Bellagio , but strolling along the winding cobbled pathways just never gets old, and I could happily spend hours doing this every time I visit.

One of my favorite places is the waterfront promenade which is the perfect place to catch your breath and get some peace. It’s especially beautiful when the flowers are in full bloom!

The Old Town of Bellagio is the kind of place where you won’t be able to put your camera away. Traditional Mediterranean buildings in every shade of pink, orange, and yellow, flower-filled balconies, and cozy cafes line the streets, each more beautiful than the last.

This is also where you’ll find Salita Serbelloni, a stunning street that you’ll instantly recognize as it’s among the top things to see in Lake Como.

It features in every other picture you’ll see from this part of Italy, but there’s nothing like seeing it with your own eyes.

2. Tour the famous Villa del Balbianello

Both Star Wars and James Bond have used Villa del Balbianello as a filming location, which is a testament to how incredible this centuries-old mansion is.

Located on the lakefront in the tiny village of Lenno, Villa del Balbianello is oh-so-elegant inside and is home to perfectly maintained gardens, so it’s no surprise that it’s become a popular wedding venue.

You can also visit the inside of the villa if you’re interested in history and architecture.

But even if you don’t go inside, a stroll around its gardens is one of the best things to do in Lake Como. You’ll find centuries-old trees, beautiful flowers, and stunning views of the lake from different vantage points.

And let’s not forget about that famous balcony overlooking the lake, where you can channel your inner Anakin Skywalker or James Bond. It was so unreal to see it in person and I definitely recommend adding this to your Lake Como itinerary .

3. Discover the town of Varenna

Towns like Varenna almost look too amazing to be real, so much so that I felt like I was living in a dream the entire time I was there. For a town so small, you can surprisingly still find lots of things to do in Varenna .

Villa Monastero is Varenna’s biggest claim to fame, but this small village brings so much more to the table.

My personal favorite is the Passeggiata degli Innamorati, a short little walkway right along the water’s edge that you have to check out.

Other spots to explore include the Villa Cipressi and the Church of St. George, and if you’re feeling like hitting the great outdoors, you can hike up to the thousand-year-old Castello di Vezio, but I have more on that a little later.

Even if you’re short on time, a quick visit to the Old Town and lunch on the waterfront is a wonderful way to spend a few hours.

My favorite place to get some drinks and appetizers is at Bar Il Molo, which has an amazing terrace overlooking the lake.

4. Explore Villa Carlotta

The only spot that I think can rival Villa del Balbianello is the regal Villa Carlotta , a huge three-story property with its very own botanical gardens in Tremezzo.

Much like Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta has been renovated into a museum filled with sculptures, paintings, and ornate furniture from the last few centuries.

But the real draw of Villa Carlotta is its expansive gardens. They’re much larger than other villas in Lake Como and have an incredible collection of flowers and plants from around the world.

Make sure to stop at the lakeside gates to witness one of the most jaw-dropping views of Lake Como. It’s no wonder the original owners chose this location for their summer house!

Getting tickets to Villa Carlotta is easy and can be done at the entrance or online. The ticket includes the gardens and the villa, so you can explore at your own pace.

5. Take a ferry ride across Lake Como

One of my favorite memories from my trips to Lake Como is taking a public ferry ride across the lake. It’s definitely the best way to see all the different towns and charming villas along the shore.

All of the main towns are connected by frequent ferries, so moving from place to place is quite straightforward and usually pretty quick.

Not to mention that it’s super affordable! Shorter routes like Bellagio to Varenna can cost as little as €5, and even if you’re traveling from Como to Bellagio which is almost 2 hours, it’ll only set you back around €10.

You can check the official Navigazione Laghi website for the schedules and fares, and I also recommend buying your tickets online, especially during the peak season.

6. Stroll around Menaggio

Menaggio is just as picturesque as the likes of Bellagio and Varenna but is noticeably quieter and has a lovely laidback way of life. It’s the perfect place to go if you want to relax and enjoy some peace.

The town features a lovely promenade with views of the lake and mountains, perfect for an afternoon walk. You can also find excellent restaurants serving up delicious Italian cuisine in Menaggio.

One of my favorite things to do in Menaggio is to sit at one of the cafes along the waterfront, especially around Piazza Guiseppe Garibaldi, and take in the stunning views while sipping on an Aperol Spritz. It’s pure bliss!

There’s not as much to do in Menaggio as in some of the neighboring towns, but that’s part of why it’s so peaceful and easygoing.

View of Menaggio from the lake

7. Tour Villa Monastero

Varenna’s most popular attraction, Villa Monastero is a must-visit when in Lake Como. This former monastery has been transformed into a museum and botanical garden, making it an ideal spot for history lovers and nature enthusiasts.

While the museum is absolutely worth visiting, it was the gardens that really took my breath away. Stretching for almost 2 km (1.25 miles), every corner of the gardens is immaculate, vibrant, and steeped in history.

Strolling through the gardens was undoubtedly one of my favorite things to do in Lake Como!

Even if you’re not usually one for museums, I highly recommend visiting Villa Monastero for its incredible gardens alone.

However, if you have the time, I suggest buying the combined ticket to visit both the villa and the gardens for a well-rounded experience.

8. Take a walk through Orrido di Bellano

One of the most unique and lesser-known spots in Lake Como is Orrido di Bellano, a natural gorge formed by the Pioverna River.

The walk through the gorge is truly breathtaking as you follow a wooden walkway through tunnels, over bridges, and past waterfalls. It’s unlike anything else you’ll see in Lake Como and definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

What I found remarkable about Orrido di Bellano was how close it is to Bellano town, as it feels like it’s tucked away miles from the center. In reality, a 5-minute stroll from the heart of the town will get you right to the entrance.

Though Orrido di Bellano is quite well known, many visitors often overlook it, and I can’t understand why. It’s also just a 5-minute train ride from Varenna, so it’s very easy to get to.

9. Head out on a private boat tour

Although seeing Lake Como from a ferry or the shore is fantastic, nothing beats experiencing it on a private boat tour. It’s undoubtedly one of the best ways to take in all the beauty and charm of this stunning lake.

You can rent a boat yourself (most boats don’t require a license) or hire a driver to take you around.

Like most private tours, these tend to be significantly more expensive than classic guided trips, but if you’re traveling with a group, it can be quite affordable.

Aside from the obvious beauty, one of my favorite things about taking a private boat tour is that you have complete control over your itinerary. You can stop wherever and whenever you want for photos or to take a dip in the crystal-clear waters.

There are lots of options, such as this private 2-hour tour  with your own captain, or you can don the captain’s hat yourself and  rent a boat for 2 hours  which gives you the ultimate freedom to explore on your own.

If you’re staying in Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, or Tremezzo, this luxurious Lake Como boat tour will be the best option for you.

Alternatively, you can also find a bunch of skippers offering private excursions from each of the main towns, so it’s possible to do this activity at the last minute if it’s not too busy.

10. Explore the ruins of the Castello di Vezio

In terms of more outdoorsy things to do at Lake Como, it’s hard to beat the hike to the Castello di Vezio. The trail will take you around 30 minutes to complete, so it’s a relatively short but steep hike.

Once you reach the top, you’ll be greeted by spooky ghost statues scattered around the grounds, 12th-century ruins, and some of Lake Como’s best views. Anyone with an interest in wildlife will also enjoy checking out the collection of birds of prey that reside here.

This castle has lived many lives, including serving as a military outpost during World War II, and you can read up on the background through the information boards at the top.

As it’s a steep hike, I recommend wearing suitable shoes and bringing plenty of water. I stupidly did this hike in sandals and it was horrible to get down on the slippery paths so I wouldn’t recommend that!

11. Stroll through the botanical gardens at Villa Cipressi

Another stunning garden to explore on Lake Como is at Villa Cipressi in Varenna. This gorgeous villa has a beautiful terraced garden with incredible views of the lake.

Villa Cipressi now operates as a hotel and it’s definitely one of the most stunning Lake Como hotels with lake views!

The building itself dates back to the 15th century and retains all its old-world charm through its outdoor patio, luxury guestrooms, and traditional decor. Sadly, only hotel guests are permitted inside the property.

However, the botanical gardens are open to the public and are just as sensational, packed with hundreds of plant species in the prettiest of surroundings. It’s a lovely place to spend an afternoon, especially if you’re looking for a quieter spot away from the busy towns.

Villa Cipressi, Lake Como

12. Try some watersports on the lake

Lake Como is the perfect place for a relaxing getaway, but it also has plenty to offer for travelers who like to get their adrenaline pumping.

Wakeboarding, windsurfing, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding are just some of the watersports offered along the lake, and the calm waters make it much less daunting for first-timers.

When the warmer weather comes around, towns and villages like Bellagio, Varenna, and Lenno operate a ton of exciting watersports, and many hotels have the likes of jet skis and kayaks available to rent.

This is a fantastic way to experience the lake from a different perspective and add some excitement to your trip.

Kayaks on Lake Como

13. Enjoy a funicular ride up to Brunate

The town of Como is linked to the nearby village of Brunate by a funicular railway that’s been in operation since the late 1800s.

Brunate lies 500 meters (1,640 ft) above Como, making it an excellent spot for panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

The journey itself only takes around 7 minutes, and during peak seasons, it runs roughly every 15 minutes. After you land in Brunate, you’ll have the Phare de Volta lighthouse and quaint churches like Parrocchia Sant’Andrea Apostolo to explore.

We opted to visit for sunset and I couldn’t recommend it enough. The sky lit up in the prettiest shades of pink, orange, and yellow, with the lake sparkling below us. It was a truly magical experience!

Sunset from Brunate, Italy

14. Explore the historic center of Como

Como is the capital of the Province of Como, and I’ve always found this city to be terribly underrated.

It’s much larger than cute villages like Bellagio and Varenna, but it has so much to offer in terms of history, culture, and nightlife.

You’ll have no problem catching a ferry to Como for the day, as it boasts fantastic connections to most of the smaller towns, but spending a few nights here is also definitely worthwhile.

The exquisite Como Cathedral is the centerpiece of the city, so a visit here is a must to see frescoes and stained glass windows that’ll blow you away.

Other things to do in Como include visiting Villa Olmo, a palatial property that looks more like a royal residence, plus the Basilica of San Fedele.

Como also has a direct train connection to Milan, so it’s an easy day trip from the fashion capital of Italy if you’re based there.

15. Attend an Italian cooking class

Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best things to do in Lake Como is to take part in a cooking class.

As well as being a wonderful opportunity to learn the craft of Italian cooking, these classes are such a blast and usually include some local wines to enjoy alongside your home-cooked meal.

This tour equips you with all the skills you’ll need to craft your own pasta at home, and you’ll also learn how to whip up a mean tiramisu. The class is usually only made up of around 10 to 12 people and runs from your local chef’s own home.

An Italian dining experience wouldn’t be complete without an aperitif, and these classes generally offer some prosecco to sip on before your meal, plus some light bites and nibbles.

16. Visit Villa Melzi Gardens

As you’ve probably gathered by now, Lake Como has an abundance of high-end villas and immaculate gardens, and Villa Melzi is one that I instantly fell in love with.

Just a quick stroll from the center of Bellagio, Villa Melzi is actually one of the newer villas in the area, having been constructed in the early 1800s.

The interior of the villa is off-limits to visitors, but the museum, chapel, and gardens are open to the public from March to November each year.

From the Romanesque and Egyptian statues to the serene Japanese pond and the meandering walkways, these gardens are just magical and really encapsulate the beauty of Lake Como.

Bellagio can be quite hectic during the summer months, and Villa Melzi will check all your boxes when you’re looking for somewhere that’s easy to reach but away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets.

View of Villa Melzi in Bellagio, Italy from the lake

17. Eat in a lakeside restaurant

You won’t have to go far to enjoy dinner with a view in the Lake Como area, as there are more waterfront eateries than I’d even attempt to count.

Classic Italian fare like wood-fired pizzas, arancini, burrata, and bruschetta are available in most restaurants, so you’ll be spoiled for choice no matter where you pick.

Having said that, it’s not uncommon for bistros and cafes with incredible locations to be lacking in quality when it comes to the food, so I have a few suggestions for you to ensure you won’t have to sacrifice on views or taste.

For an upscale experience, make sure to visit Bar Giardino at Hotel Royal Victoria in Varenna. The view from the outdoor terrace is simply incredible, and the food is equally as impressive.

Or for a more casual option, head to Bar Il Molo , just a few steps from Hotel Royal Victoria. I must admit, the food here can be a bit of a hit or miss, but the view from their terrace and the cocktails are top-notch.

Ristorante La Punta is another favorite of mine, and it’s located right on the tip of Bellagio’s peninsula, making it the perfect place for a sunset dinner. With its elegant decor and delicious seafood dishes, this restaurant is a must-visit while in Lake Como.

18. Take a dip in the lake

It goes without saying that one of the most enjoyable things to do in Lake Como is to dive into the refreshing cobalt-blue waters.

Lake Como is a lovely place for a dip, especially when you’ve spent the day under the sweltering sunshine. After all, Italy is no stranger to scorching summer temperatures!

There are many hotels perched right along the waterside with their own stretch of private land, but there are a number of designated swimming areas in most towns.

Unless somewhere is marked as safe for swimming or is a beach area, it’s best to avoid jumping in, as some patches of the lake have less favorable swimming conditions than others.

Some gorgeous spots for a quick splash include Lido di Bellagio Beach Club, Spiaggia Pubblica di Bellagio, or Lido di Varenna.

Where to Stay in Lake Como

The most popular areas for accommodation in Lake Como are Bellagio, Varenna, and Como. These towns have the most tourist attractions and offer great accommodation options ranging from luxurious villas to budget-friendly guesthouses.

Varenna and Como are especially great because they have direct train connections to Milan, so it’s very easy to get to. However, keep in mind that Como is very far from the middle part of the lake where most attractions are located so you’ll spend a lot of time commuting.

Bellagio is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Como in the Italian region of Lombardy. It is located on Lake Como. The arms of the lake form an inverted Y. The triangular land mass at the base of the inverted Y is the Larian Triangle. The Como arm of the lake lies to its south west, the Lecco arm of the lake to its south east. At the northern point of the triangle sits Bellagio, looking across to the northern arm of the lake and, behind it, the Alps. It has always been famous for its location.

Italy's Deepest Lake Is Also Its Most Glamorous — With Luxury Hotels, Stunning Mountain Views, and Fairy-tale Towns

Lake Como is one of Italy's dreamiest lake destinations — here's how to plan the perfect visit.

lake como europe trip

© Marco Bottigelli/Getty Images

It’s hard to think of Lake Como without thinking of its famous residents: Clooney, Versace, Messi, Madonna. At one point or another, they’ve all staked their claim to a piece of lakeside real estate here. And one can hardly blame them for coveting a sliver of Como’s fabulous shoreline. No place in Italy has quite the cache of Lake Como, and its reputation as the epitome of the good life is well-deserved.

One of a cluster of northern Italian lakes that includes Garda, Maggiore, Lugano, and several smaller siblings, Lake Como, or Lago di Como, is Italy’s deepest lake. Its distinctive shape — an upside down Y — was formed by a massive glacier, and the lake is still fed from waters descending from the nearby Alps. That sets the scene for some high drama, landscape-wise, with steep mountains cloaked with dense forests and deep blue waters ringed by charming lakeside towns .

The Romans were the first to build grand villas on Lake Como, and ever since, generations of la dolce vita seekers have followed suit, using towns such as Bellagio, Como, Menaggio, and Tremezzo as the base for lakeside leisure. We asked several travel experts about their longtime love affairs with the lake, and got their advice on the best places to stay, dine, and experience Lake Como.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Lake Como’s five-star hotels are numerous and legendary, including relative newcomer Passalacqua, which opened in 2022 and occupies an 18th-century aristocratic villa.
  • All of our experts agree that getting out on the water is a must, whether via a lake ferry, a privately chartered Riva boat, or a self-driven motorboat.
  • Whether you dine on the water — say at Harry’s Bar in Cernobbio — or journey uphill to Al Veluu for its sweeping views, make sure at least one of your meals takes in the scenery.
  • Yes, you can buy luxury fashion goods during your visit, but consider some Italian-made items, like the wine, olive oil, and vinegars from Enoteca da Gigi in Como.
  • Join a guided or self-guided hike or bike ride to discover the many scenic trails around the lake, where the gobsmacking views are the reward for all that elevation change.

Grand Hotel Tremezzo

“I always say the arrival to Grand Hotel Tremezzo on Lake Como is cinematic,” says luxury travel expert Annie Fitzsimmons, whose new book, " 100 Hotels of a Lifetime ," features the art nouveau facade of this palatial resort on the cover. “I love everything about the view … the town of Bellagio across the lake, the swimming pool seemingly suspended over the water,” she shares, adding that owner Valentina de Santis and her team are “the best on the planet.”

Grand Hotel Victoria

TravelLustre travel consultant Nicole Bono calls this belle époque beauty her favorite hotel on the lake. “There's a private beach club for guests steps away from the hotel where you can go for a dip, as well as a stunning pool,” she says. Samy Ghachem, general manager of La Dolce Vita Orient Express , says Victoria has “the best spa on the lake.”

Passalacqua

“Eighteenth century Passalacqua is a dream from another time,” says travel writer Nicole Trilivas. “It’s like walking onto a vintage film set, with cascading gardens, jewel-box sitting rooms, and pastel-hued suites as spoiling, decadent, and lavish as wedding cakes.” Trilivas is also a fan of their Bellini cocktail, made with white peach, pink pepper, and Champagne.

A sexy ambience permeates this 40-suite hotel, where striking modern architecture stands out on a lakeshore dotted with centuries-old villas and art nouveau edifices. And on a lake known for its grand dames, it says a lot that Il Sereno was T+L readers’ favorite resort in Europe in 2023 . Expect a swim-up suite , Riva boats for guest use, and Michelin-star dining.

For a palatial vibe right in the center of Como, Ghachem calls Palace Hotel , run by the Villa d’Este group, one of his favorites. “Cross the road and you're on the water. The hotel is located within walking distance of most restaurants, shopping, and most activities, including the ferry terminal.”

Best Things to Do

Amanda Blackard/Travel + Leisure

Go on a boat ride.

“I always advise every traveler going to Lake Como that the real beauty of the region is best seen from the water,” says Ghachem. “You absolutely need to get out on a boat. Most hotels can make arrangements for private Venetian-style boats or the more exciting and elegant Riva boats. There are, of course, less pricey options, including the numerous ferry routes.” Como Lake Artists offers reasonably priced self-drive boats.

Hire a photographer.

Eli Wagner , a Travel + Leisure A-list advisor and founder of Wagner Bespoke Travel , says the best way to preserve your Lake Como memories is to hire a pro. “Hire a photographer to join you and your family on the boat day. Instead of the traditional holiday cards, having Lake Como as the backdrop will be memorable for your holiday photos for many years to come.”

Hit the trail.

When you’re not on the water, head out on one of Lake Como’s numerous hiking trails. From Torno, Ghachem recommends the trail up to Montepiatto “for a stunning view over the northern and southern parts of the lake.” From Como town, it’s just an hour walk up to the village of Brunate, where Ghachem says “you’ll be rewarded with a number of bars and local restaurants before catching the funicular back down.”

Embrace la dolce far niente.

The sweetness of doing nothing — that’s a favorite pastime on Lake Como. “It's a great destination to lounge with your spritz and do a whole lot of nothing,” says Bono. “People can just relax and take it easy, strolling, shopping, and enjoying the scenery.”

Best Shopping

Enoteca da gigi, como.

“This is one of my favorite wine bars in the old town,” says Ghachem. “You can taste before you buy.” In addition to wines from all over Italy, he says the olive oil and vinegar selection here is top-notch.

Riflessi di Gusto

This old-school boutique for foodie gifts carries carefully and locally sourced, made-in-Italy products, including many hard-to-find items that slip easily into a carry-on. Ghachem says the selection of dry pastas is the best on the lake.

La Bottega del Legno

“There are a lot of super-touristy stores all over the lake, but you can also find some wonderful boutiques,” says Bono. Bellagio’s compact old town is her favorite for shopping, and the historic Bottega del Legno is a great stop for wood-carved items, including real wooden toys.

Best Restaurants

chekyfoto/Getty Images

Bono calls this hilltop restaurant “a true showstopper,” while Wagner says it “embodies the essence of Lake Como.” Fresh, locally sourced ingredients, including mushrooms delivered daily, earn high marks. “Go at sunset and take in the amazing panorama,” adds Bono.

Harry's Bar

Ghachem appreciates the familiar comforts of this longtime restaurant on the Cernobbio waterfront. “You can't go wrong here,” he says. “There’s great ambience — it’s just upscale enough.” Grab an outdoor seat overlooking the lake and take advantage of the terrific wine list.

L'Orologio

“Most concierges would not recommend this place as it's almost too local,” says Ghachem, adding that this Como restaurant is “for sure the least touristy place in town.” Tagliolini with porcini mushrooms and truffle is his go-to order here.

Best Time to Visit

Our experts agree that shoulder season (September and October) is the best time to visit Lake Como. “The entire lake is lush — everything is so stunning this time of year,” says Bono. Wagner votes for September. “[This is] when the summer crowds have dissipated and the sun is still shining,” he shares. Ghachem also suggests May, before the summer crowds arrive. But note that if you do visit in these “in-between” seasons, you’ll find cooler air and water temperatures that may dissuade you from taking a dip in the lake.

June, July, and August are peak travel months for the lake. However, if you reserve early and prepare for the crowds, you’ll find a quintessential Italian lake experience awaits.

Many hotels and restaurants close for the winter, but enough remain open that if you want a quiet — albeit chilly — vacation, this might be the time to visit. At Christmas, the villages along the lake take on a magical atmosphere.

How to Get There

Como town, the starting point for many vacations on the lake, is about one hour from Milan’s Malpensa Airport, and about a 40-minute train ride from Milano Centrale, Milan’s main train station. Bellagio, Menaggio, and other small towns along the lake are served by ferries (less frequent in the offseason) or can be reached by car.

Served by several intra-Europe carriers, Milan Bergamo Airport is about one hour and 40 minutes from Como by car.

How to Get Around

“If you're happy to self-drive, having a car can be very useful,” says Bono. This is especially true for reaching destinations not directly on the lake. But if you don’t want to rent a car, Bono says, “private transfers and car services, as well as ferries and water taxis are the way to go.” Some hotels rent Fiat 500s, which make for fun driving and great photo ops, though Ghachem warns that the roads around the lake are very narrow and often quite curvy.

I’m not sure why it took me so long to get to Lake Como. I’ve traveled to Italy seven times, but kept passing it up for coastal destinations like Cinque Terre, the Amalfi Coast and Puglia because I always thought seaside charm was more my jam. Well, I finally made it to Italy’s deepest lake, home to spectacular villas, colorful hamlets and scenic gardens. And now I’m smitten. Lake Como truly is a summer dream destination, and I’m sharing my complete travel guide to help you plan your visit. Below you’ll find my favorite villages, villas, the best Lake Como hotels, Airbnbs, restaurants, swimming spots, viewpoints and more.

HOW MANY DAYS ON LAKE COMO?

FOUR TO FIVE DAYS. Lake Como is one of the most serene destinations in Italy, and you’ll want to explore at a relaxed pace to really enjoy the surroundings and soak in the ambiance. There are several towns, hamlets and villages to visit, but all are tiny and it’s possible to see multiple destinations in a single day. Four to five days is the ideal amount of time to explore both well known and lesser known villages, enjoy a boat day, visit the a few villas and eat at the best restaurants.

WHEN TO VISIT LAKE COMO

MAY TO SEPTEMBER. May through September is high season. Prices for lodging are high, but this is the warmest time of the year, and the most pleasant time to visit. Oddly enough, May and June also get the most rainfall. There’s a lower chance of rain in July, August or September, but Lake Como will be busier at this time. If you want to see the purple wisteria around Lake Como, visit in April when the flowering plant is in full bloom.

THE TOWNS OF LAKE COMO

Bellagio might be the most iconic destination on Lake Como. The picturesque village is home to scenic cobbled lanes and stairways lined with charming boutiques, gelato shops, cafes and restaurants – Salita Serbelloni is the most famous passageway. Bellagio is small enough to visit as a day trip, but its location between the lake’s two branches make it the ideal home base for exploring the surrounding region.

Como is the largest settlement on Lake Como, the city where most visitors arrive by train. It’s perfectly lovely, and has the most options in terms of lodging, food and shopping, but its location on the southern tip of the lake isn’t the most ideal location for exploring the region.

A lovely little village that takes a mere hour to explore after a visit to Villa del Balbianello. The main square is home to the octagonal shaped Church of St. John and Baptisery of St. Stefano and a delicious gelateria.

Mennagio is one of the most scenic settlements to approach by water. Colorful old buildings cluster around the waterfront where the white bell tower of St. Stephen’s Church rises up out of the rooftops.

Nesso flies under the radar and is often overlooked by Lake Como visitors on a tight schedule. The hillside village is so tiny that it can be explored in a mere hour, but chances are you’ll want to spend an entire afternoon in Nesso when you discover its shoreline gems. Orrido di Nesso is a waterfall gorge that divides the village into two, and the Civera Bridge serves as the gateway to the falls. The arched stone bridge has all the feels of a fairytale, a popular spot to jump into the water. And there are picturesque stone steps that lead into the lake for swimming and sunbathing.

A small commune on the western shore of Lake Como, and a mere ferry ride away from Bellagio. The main boulevard borders the shoreline where the jetty, restaurants, shops, Grand Hotel Tremezzo and Villa Carlotta are all within walking distance of each other.

Varenna is my favorite destination on Lake Como. The little village sits on the eastern shore where you’ll find some of the loveliest viewpoints on the lake. A colorful façade of yellow, orange and red buildings paint an incredible scene for visitors approaching by boat in search of postcard perfect views. Varenna is also home to two of the prettiest villas on Lake Como – Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi.

VILLAS ON LAKE COMO

VILLA DEL BALBIANELLO (LENNO)

The 18th century villa is breathtaking. Carve out a full morning for a leisurely stroll through the terraced gardens to explore every nook and cranny of Villa del Balbianello. Don’t miss the lush pathways, stone sculptures, the portico, a boat dock covered in ivy and absolutely sweeping views of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains. It all feels like a scene from a movie, I guess it’s fitting that both Star Wars and James Bond were filmed here. Advance tickets can be purchased here .

Villa del Balbianello sits on the outskirts of Lenno. When you exit the ferry, walk to your left following the water until you see the sign for the villa. At the sign there are two options to reach the villa: pay a few Euro to join a water taxi (five minutes) or a free walk through the park (15 minutes). I opted for the walk, not realizing how stunning the villa is to approach by water until I did the return by water taxi. I highly recommend using this service both directions.

VILLA CARLOTTA (TREMEZZO)

Villa Carlotta is located on the banks of Tremezzo, just steps away from the ferry jetty. The villa now serves as a museum, and ticketed entry includes access to both the museum and the botanical gardens. For me, the garden is the highlight. It’s quintessential Lake Como – spectacular fountains, a lemon citrus tunnel, scenic gates, perfectly trimmed hedges, fountains and blooming azaleas and rhododendrons. Advance tickets can be purchased here .

VILLA CIPRESSI (VARENNA)

A functioning hotel set in a 17th century villa overlooking a beautiful botanical garden that can be visited by outside guests. Pathways wind their way through the terraced garden where lush greenery spills down into the lake. Don’t miss the grand cast-iron gate that opens up to a set of stone steps that lead into the water (this is the villa’s private boat jetty). Villa Cipressi is prettiest in April when the purple wisteria is in full bloom.

VILLA MELZI (BELLAGIO)

This is a 19th century neo-classical villa located in Bellagio. It isn’t nearly as popular as the villas in Lenno, Tremezzo or Varenna, but worth a quick visit to see the gardens and lake views while in Bellagio.

VILLA MONASTERO (VARENNA)

This expansive handsome villa is the neighbor to Villa Cipressi on Lake Como’s eastern shoreline. Villa Monastero sits perched over a terraced garden bursting with plants, trees and flowerbeds including agaves, palms, wisteria, magnolia, citrus, roses and more. One of the prettiest private boat docks sits in front of the villa – stone columns rise up from a set of stone steps that lead down to the water. Advanced ticket information here .

VILLA OLMO (COMO)

A grand neo-classical villa on the banks of Como that dates back to the 18th century. The wide open grounds of Villa Olmo aren’t as picturesque as its northern neighbors, but the towering main building is a sight to see.

LAKE COMO HOTELS

COMO CENTER APARTMENT (COMO)

Loft apartment located in the heart of Como walking distance to shops, restaurants, the ferry jetty and bus station. Como Center Apartment is small, but very clean, modern and cozy.

DIVINA VITA APARTMENTS (VARENNA)

Divina Vita offers guests one of the loveliest views in Varenna. The apartments open up to small balconies with decorative metal railing that overlook Lake Como (the Deluxe Apartment has a particularly lovely view). There are only five apartments, and they book up months in advance.

GRAND HOTEL TREMEZZ O (TREMEZZO)

This might be the most quintessential hotel stay on Lake Como. Grand Hotel Tremezzo towers over the western banks of the lake facing Bellagio across the water. It’s completely reminiscent of vintage Italy, and looks straight out of a Wes Anderson film. The hotel’s lakefront is an absolute vibe adorned with bright orange and white sun beds, umbrellas, chairs and tables. There is a pool on the lake, and the hotel is conveniently located next to Villa Carlotta and the Tremezzo ferry jetty.

HOTEL BELVEDERE (BELLAGIO)

Hotel Belvedere sits perched on the hill above Bellagio where beautiful gardens, an infinity pool and umbrellas slope down the property’s rolling hills. The design is classic Italian, and the property grounds + views are the main draw to staying here. Rooms are clean, albeit a bit dated. It’s a 10-minute walk to reach the Bellagio town centre.

HOTEL DU LAC (BELLAGIO)

In terms of location, it doesn’t get more convenient than the waterfront in Bellagio. Hotel Du Lac sits on the main boulevard where restaurants, gelato shops and the ferry terminal are mere steps away. That said, the rooms are standard, nothing particularly special, and there isn’t much in terms of lakefront serenity on this busy street.

IL SERENO (TORNO)

One of the few contemporary properties on Lake Como. Il Sereno is a beautiful modern property that looks more urban than classic Italian. Rooms are ultra luxe with wood paneling throughout the bedrooms and bathrooms, stylish furniture pieces and muted color palette.

LE RONDINELLE (BELLAGIO)

Affordable apartment in Bellagio in a spectacular location – the balcony sits above Vecchio Borgo Restaurant, overlooking the charming little square. The building is old, but the apartment is up to date. It’s no frills, but simple and clean. Good option for anyone looking to stay in Bellagio on a budget.

MANDARIN ORIENTAL, LAGO DI COMO (BLEVIO)

If you’re looking to splurge on Lake Como, Mandarin Oriental is the place to do it. Set in a 19th century villa, the five-star property offers guests a selection of rooms, suites and villas. Beautiful property, and impeccable service.

MENAGGIO HISTORICAL STUDIO (MENAGGIO)

This charming studio sits in a 600-year old building, but has been completely transformed into a beautiful little apartment. The white walls, tile, furniture and linens make the modern space feel bright and airy. Menaggio Historical Studio is an Airbnb Plus property. A great deal in Mennagio if you can snag it!

PALAZZO ALBRICCI PEREGRINI (COMO)

Palazzo Albricci Peregrini is a 15th century palace that has been completely converted into a boutique hotel. The rooms have loads of character boasting timber beam ceilings, stone stairways, cobbled floors, frescos and a gorgeous courtyard garden. The property sits in the heart of Como, a short stroll to restaurants, shops and the water.

PASSALACQUA (MOLTRASIO)

Passalacqua is a small luxury property located in the little village of Moltrasio. The hotel is lovely, particularly the gardens. A small pool sits on the terraced lawns surrounded by picturesque sunbathing umbrellas, as well as perfectly manicured hedges, palms, trees and fountains. The rooms and suites are stunning – absolutely bursting with Baroque design opulence.

SUMMER & WINTER DOLCE RISVEGIO (PERLEDO)

This Airbnb Plus apartment has all the cozy feels of a lakeside cabin. The space is bright and airy thanks to the white interiors, wood plank ceilings and large glass sliding doors. Property is located in Perledo, a small village above Varenna.

VILLA LIBERTY (COMO)

Villa Liberty is located in Como, a 20-minute walk to the heart of the town. The villa dates back to 1910, but has been converted into a boutique hotel. Rooms are spacious, simple and modern – a solid mid-range option if you’re staying in Como.

VILLA MARINA (BELLANO)

A beautiful lakefront house in Bellano with a private beach and umbrellas for guests. Villa Marina sits in a historical house, and while the rooms aren’t the most modern, they are bursting with charm and character. The cozy spaces include wood beam ceilings, stone fireplaces, mahogany wardrobes, etc.

VISTA MENAGGIO CENTR O (MENAGGIO)

Vista Menaggio Cent ro is a beautiful Airbnb Plus property located in the historical centre of Megaggio. The beams, door frames, window frames, coat rack, desk and bed frame are all made from similar colored dark wood that pops against the bright white space – feels very open and airy. The apartment is two bedrooms, and overlooks the heart of town.

VILLA MOJANA (BELLAGIO)

Villa Mojana is all about rustic luxury. The villa houses six rooms, all boasting hard wood floors, wood canopy beds and white linens. The rooms are beautiful, but the grounds are what really make the property shine – lush greenery, marble white sculptures, an infinity pool, white loungers and views of Lake Como.

Sweet corners in the village of Lenno.

EAT ON LAKE COMO

AL PRATO (VARENNA)

Al Prato might be the best restaurant in Varenna. The menu is always changing, but usually includes fresh pastas, seafood and meat. Reservations recommended – the restaurant is tiny!

BAR II MOLO (VARENNA)

Absolutely charming bar / cafe on the Varenna waterfront that faces picturesque views of the village and a little beach. This place is very popular during high season, expect a long wait for a table.

BISTROT ANTICHI SAPORI (BELLAGIO)

Casual restaurant in Bellagio that offers a nice variety of Italian dishes including bruschetta, pastas, pizza, meat and fish.

DAI VIGA PASTA FRESCA (BELLAGIO)

Affordable, delicious pasta shop located on a tiny square in Bellagio. Dai Viga Pasta Fresca is a quick-eat establishment where guests select a fresh pasta and a homemade sauce, and the food is ready within a few minutes.

GELATERIA DEL BORGO (BELLAGIO)

The tastiest gelato shop in Bellagio is located at the top of the village. Flavors change daily, but a sampling of options include passion fruit, mango, chocolate, mint, coffee and more.

GIACOMO AL LAGO (TREMEZZO)

My favorite restaurant on Lake Como is lakefront at Grand Hotel Trem ezzo . The outdoor restaurant bursts with retro Italy vibes, surrounded by sun beds, umbrellas, tabletops and chairs dripping in the property’s signature orange + white color palette. Seafood is the restaurant’s specialty – highlights include linguine with lobster and cherry tomato sauce, spaghetti with clams, fresh sea bream, gnocchi with langoustines and more.

LA LOCANDA TREMEZZO (TREMEZZO)

Casual spot that sits on the main road in Tremezzo. Menu includes a selection of tasty homemade pasta dishes, as well as fresh seafood.

PIAZZA ROMA COMO (COMO)

Little spot in Como that serves delicious fresh pastas, as well as a few seafood and meat options.

RISTORO FORMA E GUSTO (BELLAGIO)

Lovely little restaurant with tables on an alleyway in Bellagio. Risto Forma e Gusto serves all the classic pizza, pasta and calzone dishes – very affordable. The bruschetta appetizer is a must.

TRATTORIA SAN GIACOMO (BELLAGIO)

This little restaurant sits at the top of the steps on Salita Serbelloni, the most photographed location in all of Lake Como. If you can get one of their tables outside, the ambiance is a 10/10.

The ultimate travel guide to Lake Como, Italy including the best towns, villas, swimming spots, hotels, restaurants and more.

The most iconic street on Lake Como is Salita Serbelloni, in Bellagio.

GET AROUND LAKE COMO

The most scenic way see Lake Como is by boat. The three options for getting around on the water are the public ferry, self-drive boat rental and boat rental with a captain. I’ll quickly breakdown all the options below:

The ferry system is frequent with lines that connect the most popular villages and towns on the lake including Bellagio, Cadenabbia, Como, Lenno, Menaggio, Nesso, Tremezzina, Varenna and dozens more. Ferry tickets can be purchased at the small jetty kiosks, no need to book in advance. Current ferry schedules here .

BOAT RENTAL (SELF-DRIVE)

It’s possible to rent a boat on Lake Como, even if you do not have a boat license. These boats are small and fairly straight forward to operate. The self-drive option gives you the most freedom to explore the lake. I highly recommend anchoring at the Civera Bridge in Nesso for an afternoon of jumping, swimming and sunbathing. Rental prices range from €75 to €350 (excluding fuel), depending on length of time. Boats can be rented from Lake by Boat , Cadenzanni Lake Como Boat Rental , Lake Como Boat and Como Lake Boats.

PRIVATE BOAT (W/CAPTAIN)

Private boat rental with a captain is the most expensive option for exploring Lake Como. Prices vary based on length of time and type of boat (the iconic wood panel boats are more expensive). Rental companies include Non Solo Barche , Como Classic Boats, Taxi Boat Varenna and Bellano Water Taxi .

The ferries make it quick and easy to get around Lake Como.

The prettiest boat dock I’ve ever seen at Villa Balbianello.

GET TO LAKE COMO

Lake Como sits in the Lombardy region of Italy, easily accessible, but a world away, from the bustling big city of Milan. Most visitors arrive by train, usually disembarking in Como or Varenna, and then using the ferry system to move around the lake.

It’s also possible to explore Lake Como by rental car. While less direct than the ferry, a car offers more flexibility to stop and explore some of the region’s lesser known hamlets and villages that aren’t easily accessed by ferry or bus.

Destinations to visit after Lake Como include Venice , Portofino and Cinque Terre .

Lots of useful information & great photos. Really looking forward to my trip later in the year. Thank you for sharing. 😀

Have the best time on Lake Como!

Hello, we found your website while researching a trip to Italy starting at Lake Como. Thank you for a fantastic expose of the hotels, villas, restaurants and activities! My question is: do you have specific recommendations for Tuscany and Taormina in Sicily? Thank you again for your fabulous website!

Yes, there’s a complete travel guide to Taormiina on the blog, very comprehensive.

What a wonderful and comprehensive amount of information regarding Lake Como! We are staying at the Grand Hotel Imperiale Resort & Spa in Moltrasio by way of Milan. Can you tell me the best way to get there?

Then you’re going to need a plan! And whilst I’ve piled up on both the tourist attractions and hidden gems, I strongly suggest that at least one day is spent tackling a mountain hike because the views are sensational!

In this itinerary, you will find a very full 3-days. It’s feasible to complete each day as I’ve set them up, but if you skip a pick for an extra lunch hour or a couple of drinks, I will not be offended at all!

The structure I’ve chosen to go with is great for active vacationers, who like to be occupied and really engage with their surroundings. I’ve included routes, times, and helpful tips for each stop, but feel free to switch my choices around!

3-Day Lake Como Itinerary Overview

  • Day 1: Bellagio Town Center | Punta Spartivento | Pescallo | Bellagio Water Sports | Menaggio | Sunset Drink
  • Day 2: Varenna | Walk of Lovers Promenade | Hike to Castello di Vezio | Villa Monastero | Orrido di Bellano | Bellano
  • Day 3: Tremezzo | Villa Carlotta | Lenno | Villa del Balbionello | Isola Comacina

Choosing where to stay in Lake Como is no easy task. A significant portion of the lake’s charm stems from the dozens of historic towns and villages set on its banks. Many of these gorgeous communities offer accommodation for travelers, so the options are plentiful!

The three most popular towns for a Lake Como itinerary are Menaggio, Bellagio, and Varenna, each with its own unique charm.

Bellagio is the most well-known. It’s glamorous, classy, and admittedly a little pricey, but it’s also absolutely stunning! Menaggio is one of the largest towns on the lake, with good accommodation and public transport options!

where to stay in lake como

Varenna is gorgeous. It’s smaller and more laid back than the aforementioned towns, with a relaxed vibe and bountiful tranquility. We think Varenna is the best place to stay in Lake Como in 3 days.

Another option for a weekend in Lake Como is the city of Como itself. Set on the southern tip of the lake’s western arm, Como is a little far removed from the romantic towns of Lake Como, both in location and in atmosphere. However, it does offer some ‘big city’ advantages and comforts, as well as more affordable accommodation!

That being said, pretty much any town on the Lake could act as a comfortable base for a 3-day itinerary in Lake Como. Just make sure the town you choose is well connected to the other towns, and caters well to tourists.

Bellagio Town Center | Punta Spartivento | Pescallo | Bellagio Water Sports | Menaggio | Sunset Drink

Day 1 of your 3-day Itinerary in Lake Como offers a blend of activity and relaxation! We think this is a great way to start your trip to Lake Como.

8:30 am – Explore Bellagio Town Center

Bellagio Town Center

Bellagio is undoubtedly the best-known village on Lake Como. It’s a quaint and gorgeous lakeside paradise, steeped with a rich and far-reaching history. Nicknamed ‘The Pearl of Lake Como.” The town of Bellagio exudes glamour and class, with a lavish lifestyle at its core!

Exploring Bellagio is a necessary addition to any Lake Como Itinerary, and if you only have one day in Lake Como, we suggest you make Bellagio your first stop. Set on a lakeside hill, the narrow lanes of Bellagio meander gracefully down toward the lake, winding their way in a picturesque fashion.

The quaint cobblestone streets and staircases pass between pastel buildings and plant-filled terraces, converging in sun-soaked squares.

Bellagio is set in a famously wonderful location on the broad triangular peninsula that splits Lake Como in two! It overlooks the northern arm of the lake, with the sloping lanes offering impossibly romantic views.

After walking through the village, soak up the lakeside atmosphere with a gentle stroll along the waterfront promenade and stop for a cup of coffee with a view.

  • Cost – Free
  • How long should I stay here? If you go for breakfast you could spend 2-3 hours here.
  • Getting there – ferry from a nearby ferry port

Insider Tip: Head to the Bellagio Tourist Information Office and organize a Lake Como walking tour of Bellagio. Doing so is a great way to learn more about the town and the lake!

11:00 am – Punta Spartivento

Punta Spartivento

Punta Spartivento is a park situated at the very tip of the peninsula. Just a 10-minute scenic stroll from the center of Bellagio, the park offers entirely unobstructed views of the lake!

From here, the vista is expansive; you can see the surrounding villages and the lake stretching out in front of you, topped by the Swiss Alps in the distance.

The scenery at Punta Spartivento is well worth the short uphill walk! It’s a wonderful place to kick back and enjoy some scenic tranquillity. Pack a picnic and some drinks or pay a visit to Restaurante La Punta.

  • How long should I stay here ? 1-2 hours (although if you bring a book who knows)
  • Getting there – walk from Bellagio!

11:30 pm – Pescallo

Pescallo

Pescallo is a tiny hamlet just a short walk from Bellagio. Known as a peaceful fishing village, the hamlet is separated from Bellagio by a hill. This makes it a great escape from the crowds of Bellagio, and one of our favorite things to do in Lake Como!

While the walk isn’t long, taking only around 10 – 15 minutes, it’s not exactly simple; the mostly uphill journey entails several stairways and some uneven ground. However, the walk is beautiful and well worth the reward.

Pescallo is gorgeous; Ivy-drenched houses in muted colours wrap around a cosy harbour. You’ll mostly find locals here, going about their tranquil lives. The atmosphere is quaint and authentic, making this a perfect spot to discover what life is really like on Lake Como!

There’s only one restaurant in Pescallo: La Pergola. Enjoying brunch or lunch here, overlooking the lake, is an amazing way to reward yourself after the walk from Bellagio!

  • How long should I stay here ? 1-2 hours (worth having lunch here!)
  • Getting there – a short walk from Bellagio!

2:30 pm – Bellagio Water Sports

Bellagio Water Sports

Pescallo may be quaint and peaceful, but it’s not lacking in recreation. Bellagio Water Sports, located in Pescallo, offers an awesome range of water-based activities! In fact, they’re considered one of the best water sports providers on the whole of Lake Como!

On top of that, we don’t think there are many more scenic places to glide along the lake than around Pescallo.

The specialities here are kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding (SUPing). You may choose to rent your own kayak or SUP board and explore the tranquil waters on your own; but, if you want an experienced guide to enhance the experience, you could book onto one of the available tours!

The various tours take you on a journey of discovery, ducking into hidden corners and past little-known gems of the lake. You’ll get to explore a different side of Lake Como and experience the sights from a whole new perspective!

Kayaking and SUPing might just be our favourite methods for exploring the lake. Paddling offers an enchanting combination of scenery, fun, and tranquillity, with a healthy dose of interesting stories and information if you decide to book a tour! An itinerary for Lake Como wouldn’t be complete without some kind of water-based fun.

  • Cost – guided tours start from around $60 per person
  • How long should I stay here ? 2-3 hours is perfect to get
  • Getting there – walking (again!)

Insider Tip: Advanced booking is required, so be sure to book your rentals or tour ahead of time. Also, note that Bellagio Water Sports is generally closed on Sunday afternoons.

4:30 pm – Menaggio

Menaggio

Around mid-afternoon, it’ll be time to make the journey over to Menaggio. Head to the ferry port, and embark on the beautiful 15-minute journey across the lake.

Menaggio was once a walled city, with roots stretching back thousands of years! The town is larger than Bellagio but shares much of the village’s elegant charm. You’ll find a similar array of pastel buildings, but in Menaggio, they’re separated by broader streets and larger squares.

It’s well worth spending some time exploring Menaggio. Start by heading to Piazza Garibaldi, the main square of the town. Here you’ll find several eateries and cafes, where you can enjoy some afternoon refreshments in the sun!

Next, walk along Via Calvi, where you’ll find boutiques and craft stores selling beautiful, locally produced crafts, from clothing to food! On the same street, you’ll come across Chiesa di Santa Marta, a small but beautiful church with exquisite detailing and centuries-old paintings.

From Piazza Garibaldi stems Menaggio’s celebrated lakefront promenade. Set off on the promenade from the square and meander along the lake, passing lush trees, colourful flower beds, and pastel houses. Enjoy the gentle sounds of the lake and take in the beauty of the scenic surroundings.

If you have time, perhaps hike up to the medieval part of Menaggio higher up the hill, with steep staircases, narrow alleyways, and stone buildings.

  • How long should I stay here ? 2-3 hours
  • Getting there – the ferry!

8:00 pm – Sunset Drink

Sunset Drink

When the sun is hanging low in the sky, it’ll be time to find a picturesque lakeside bar or restaurant where you can enjoy the scenic sunset drink of a lifetime! Sunset is a beautiful time on the lake. The daytime energy fades into the ambience of the night, with the air still warm from the heat of the sun. Your Lake Como itinerary wouldn’t be complete without experiencing it!

Most of the towns and villages on the lake are home to a lakeside bar or restaurant; just head to the water’s edge of the town you’re staying in and pick one that looks appealing!

If your base village doesn’t have any waterside bars or restaurants, enjoy a drink at one of the following before heading back to where you’re staying. Just be sure to check the ferry and bus schedule for the evening!

Varenna is just a 13-minute ferry ride from Menaggio and home to some of the most spectacular sunset spots on the lake! Try Ristorante La Vista, with its elevated lakeside terrace, for a sunset aperitif and some exquisitely prepared food. Bar Il Molo also offers sensational lakeside views and tasty local dishes!

A good option for sundowners in Bellagio is Ristorante La Terazza Belveder. Perched high up in the town, this restaurant offers incredible panoramic views and delectable Mediterranean dishes. You’ll also find a good selection of local wines!

  • Cost – depends on how thirsty you are
  • How long should I stay here ? All evening? All night? Lap it up while you can…
  • Getting there – Ferry back from Menaggio

Varenna | Walk of Lovers Promenade | Hike to Castello di Vezio | Villa Monastero | Orrido di Bellano | Bellano

If you’re spending just 2 days in Lake Como, it might be hard to pack in all the best bits, but we highly recommend hitting all of the following stops!

8:30 am – Varenna

Varenna

There are dozens of towns and villages on Lake Como, but Varenna is often cited as a favourite among those who have visited. Smaller and quieter than its popular neighbours, (Menaggio and Bellagio), Varenna is overflowing with undeniable rustic charm!

As your ferry pulls up to Varenna , your breath will be taken by its beauty. The colourful buildings are painted in autumnal colours, stacked cosily between the mountains and the lake! The village is steep, set against rugged cliffs, and surrounded by an unspoiled natural landscape.

There isn’t a whole lot to do in Varenna, but we find that to be part of its charm; a sleepy village that lazes peacefully in the sun. Your morning in Varenna will mostly consist of relaxing and wandering aimlessly, admiring the picturesque scenes and fairytale charm! Enjoy a peaceful portion of your Lake Como itinerary.

  • How long should I stay here ? 1-2 hours
  • Getting there – Ferry

10:00 pm – Varenna’s Walk of Lovers Promenade

Varenna’s Walk of Lovers Promenade

The villages and towns of Lake Como are not short on charming lakeside boardwalks, but perhaps none are as romantic as Varenna’s ‘Walk of Lovers’. The village is fronted by a winding waterside footpath, that’s extremely popular amongst visiting couples!

With rough rocky walls and lush villa gardens to your right and the expansive lake to your left, the path meanders elegantly along the water. Beautiful green plants tangle from the walls, trees arch overhead, and the path takes you through a charming tunnel of ivy. The views are amazing and the atmosphere is incredibly romantic!

If you’re visiting with your partner, strolling the promenade is a vital addition to your Lake Como Itinerary, but the walk is a wonderful experience for any kind of traveller.

  • How long should I stay here? 1 hour or less
  • Getting there – walk from Varenna

11:00 am – Hike to Castello di Vezio

Castello di Vezio

Castello di Vezio is a castle perched on the hill above Varenna. Originally built in the 11th and 12th centuries, the now dilapidated castle is a beautiful and important historic site. It’s well worth a visit during your time in Varenna, and the walk-up is incredible in its own right!

The best route up to the castle can be found right next to Albergo Ristorante Montecodeno. You’ll see a sign next to the staircase that says ‘Castello di Vezio’, with an arrow pointing up the hill!

The route is well-signposted along the way. Just look for the signs that say ‘ via per Vezio ’ meaning ‘road to Vezio’.

The hike is steep but relatively short, taking around 20 – 30 minutes. It’s also exceptionally gorgeous! You’ll wind up the hill over moss-covered bridges and ivy-draped buildings. The trail also immerses you in spectacular natural beauty; rugged rock walls and lush greenery to one side, and stunning lake views to the other.

Once you get to the top, panoramic views of the lake will open out in front of you! Spend some time exploring the castle, admiring the view, and sipping on a coffee from the hilltop cafe before heading back down to Varenna.

  • Cost – entry is around $5
  • How long should I stay here? 1.5-2.5 hours
  • Getting there – Hike the via per Vezio

2:00 pm – Villa Monastero

Villa Monastero

Resting on the shores of Varenna, Villa Monastero is a gorgeous lakeside villa complex, surrounded by a terraced botanical garden. The site originally housed a 12th-century Cistercian convent, which now lies beneath the villa.

Villa Monastero houses a number of famous rooms, 14 of which belong to the Casa Museum. This museum allows visitors to explore four centuries of history by immersing them in fully furnished historic rooms! The rooms are furnished in various styles, housing opulent decorations and precious materials.

Also worth noting is the magnificent Fermi Hall. The hall is well-known thanks to Nobel Prize winner Enrico Fermi holding numerous physics classes here during 1954!

The gardens feature flora from around the globe, resulting in a colourful and exotic scenery, with a variety of scents wafting through the air. Wander around the estate and admire the waterfront views amongst the lush gardens.

  • Cost – around $10
  • How long should I stay here? around 2 hours
  • Getting there – walking!

4:30 pm – Orrido di Bellano

Orrido di Bellano

Orrido is a natural gorge, that has been carved by the Pioverna river over the past 15 million years! Set in the comune of Bellano near the central area of Lake Como, the gorge offers some of the most spectacular natural scenery on the lake and you can even go geocaching there .

Accessible via an old suspension bridge, Orrido di Bellano features a walkway fixed in stone. The turquoise waters snake between rugged canyon walls draped in greenery, and the sound of rushing water fills the air! The walkway winds its way along the gorge wall, high above the water below and past a wonderful natural waterfall. The scenery really is incredible!

Bellano is easily accessible from Varenna via train, bus, and ferry.

  • Cost – around $5
  • How long should I stay here? around an hour
  • Getting there – Ferry, train or bus! Bellano is super accessible, and then it is a short uphill hike.

5:30 pm – Bellano

lake como europe trip

After you’ve checked out the Orrido di Bellano, it’s time to get stuck into the town itself. Boasting some fantastic restaurants, bars, and cafes, it’ll be easy to find something to put away before grabbing the last ferry home.

Bellano is a little off the traditional tourist track, and as such is a great place to find cheap accommodation right on the edge of Lake Como. If you’re looking for a lake view at a bargain, this is where to find it!

This charming town has some sensational architecture and is host to some great lake-and-beachside bars, so definitely time to grab a beverage of choice before concluding the day’s activities!

  • How long should I stay here? Around 2 hours
  • Getting there – walk down the hill from Orrido di Bellano

Tremezzo | Villa Carlotta | Lenno | Villa del Balbionello | Isola Comacina

8:30 am – Tremezzo

Tremezzo

By far the most popular attraction in Tremezzo is Villa Carlotta, but the small town is worth exploring in its own right as you pass through! Villa Carlotta is located north of the town, but you should explore the town first, and stop for some brekkie.

The views from the walk along the water are spectacular! Along the way, you’ll pass the magnificent Grand Hotel Tremezzo, as well as a series of lakeside restaurants where you can stop for a bite or a drink.

Make the short journey on foot to The Tower of Rogaro, a medieval tower perched on a hill. Surrounded by greenery, the tower’s location offers some incredible views out over the lake!

You may also choose to stop by at the Church of Saint-Bartholomew. With roots stretching back to the 1100s, this tiny baroque-style church features some stunning paintings.

  • How long should I stay here? 1.5 hours

Lenno

Together with a couple of other villages, Lenno and Tremezzo make up the comune of Tremezzina. You’ll be marching down the coast to find the top villas and towns!

Just like Tremezzo, it’s one of Lenno’s prized villas that attracts most of its visitors. Villa del Balbionello may be the main attraction, but it’s worth taking some time to enjoy Lenno first, for some lunch.

Set on the slopes of Mount Tremezzo, the village offers many of the same charms as the other lakeside villages; A beautiful waterfront promenade, narrow alleyways, and historic buildings.

You’ll find a myriad of restaurants, cafes, and gelaterias, where you can sit and enjoy the views. Lenno is quieter than many of the neighbouring towns, making it a good place to enjoy some peace.

Lenno is also well known for its incredible olive oil, so be sure to pick up a bottle to take home with you or enjoy while touring Lake Como! The best place in Lenno to buy some is Oleificia Vanini Osvaldo.

  • How long should I stay here? 2-3 hours (or longer, for dinner and a drink)
  • Getting there – Walk or bus from Tremezzo (not far from villa Carlotta)

1:30 pm – Villa del Balbionello

Villa del Balbionello

Situated on the tip of a quaint, wooded peninsula, the 18th-century lakeside villa is gorgeous and grand. Surrounded by ornately carved statues and ivy draped stone walls, it boasts exceptional views of the lake, as well as perfectly pruned terraced gardens.

It is more than just a beautiful villa; Villa del Balbionello ’s picturesque charm has made it a movie star! A number of feature films have used the villa as a shotting location.

Its first notable on-screen appearance was in the 2002 film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones . Next, it solidified its film star status when it appeared as an important shooting location for Casino Royale !

Perhaps the most recognizable feature of the villa is the perfectly dome-shaped tree sitting in the lake-facing garden. The 200-year-old tree has been hand-pruned to this shape each November for several decades, as a way to preserve the villa’s view of Bellagio!

  • Cost – $ 11 USD for the gardens only, or $22 USD for a guided tour of the whole property.
  • How long should I stay here? 1.5-2 hours
  • Getting there – Walk from Lenno

Insider Tip: The villa closes at 4:30 pm each day and is closed on Mondays and Wednesday. Be sure to plan your time accordingly during day 2 of your Lake Como Itinerary!

4:30 pm – Isola Comacina

Isola Comacina

A small wooded island in the western arm of Lake Como, Isola Comacina is an important historic site. It’s the only island in Lake Como, and it has a fascinating history that stretches back thousands of years!

Throughout the centuries, the island has been both a principal political and religious centre. It hosted the ancient Roman military and the Lombards of the 6th century.

After a series of invasions and disputes, the island’s buildings were mostly destroyed in 1169. It remained uninhabited and left to decay for many centuries thereafter until it was eventually given to Belgium after the first world war!

The island has been described as among the most interesting archaeological sites in Northern Italy, specifically for the early middle ages. A series of ancient ruins can still be explored on the island!

But a fascinating history isn’t all that Isola Comacina has to offer. It’s a beautiful green island, covered with flourishing vegetation. Lakeside walkways guide you around the island, past patches of history, beauty, and spectacular vistas!

Also, be sure to pay a visit to the island’s only restaurant, Locanda dell’Isola Comacina. The views from the terrace are out of this world! The island can be reached via private boat or ferry from Ossuccio, which in turn, is easily accessible from the main towns of the lake.

  • How long should I stay here? 2-3 hours
  • Getting there – private boat/ ferry from Ossuccio (double-barrelled boat journey)

If you’re chilling on a week or two, then you can afford to break up the first 3 days a little more and make the most of each location mentioned. However, if you are a bit of a monster tourist, then knowing about these juicy extras will give you a little more inspiration!

Lake Como Cathedral

The city of Como, located at the tip of the Lake’s western arm, is often overlooked by those travelling to Lake Como. Granted, it doesn’t quite have the same charm as the small towns and villages at the lake’s centre, but it does offer its own attractions and appeal!

The city is often considered among the most beautiful spots in the Lombardy region. It features similar pastel houses to some of the lake’s villages, as well as stellar views of the lake, historic architecture, lakeside promenades, and the comforts of a city!

Perhaps the most impressive building in Como, if not the entire lake, is the magnificent Como Cathedral. Renowned for its spectacular architecture, this 14th-century Roman Catholic cathedral features a gothic design.

The imposing facade stands tall in a city square, boasting detailed ornate carvings and incredible stonework. The interior is equally awe-inspiring, with swooping arches and a famous domed ceiling.

The city is also home to a number of museums, such as the Museo Storica Giuseppe Garibaldi, and the Como Archaeological Museum. Both are worth a visit if you have time!

In Como, you’ll also find a much wider range of evening establishments than in the villages. It’s a good spot to find a bit of nightlife in Lake Como if you’re craving drinks and dancing! There are also some great cooking courses to be had- I mean, when in Rome…

  • How long should I stay here? It’s big, so 3-4 hours
  • Getting there – Ferry, bus or train.

Como Brunate Funicular

Como Brunate Funicular

Brunate is a tiny town set high up in the mountains above Como. Taking the historic funicular up to Brunate from the city is by far one of the most popular excursions from Como!

Opened in 1894, the funicular has been hoisting locals and visitors up to 700m (2,300 feet) above sea level, on a track with a gradient as steep as is allowed! For those who are unfamiliar, a funicular is like a tram or a streetcar but set at an angle on a hill.

The 7-minute funicular ride is packed with gorgeous scenery and is an amazing experience in itself. You’ll pass through tunnels and rocky gorges as the city slowly recedes below. Trees and vegetation are plentiful, and the views are wonderful.

The best views, however, will be enjoyed once you reach the top! Scenic lookout points in Brunate offer incredible vistas, covering the lake, mountains, and Como itself. Wander around the town and pick one of the many restaurants for a scenic lunch or drinks.

The relaxed ride back down to the city is just as scenic as the way up!

  • Cost – About $6 dollars for a return
  • How long should I stay here? 1.5 – 2 hours
  • Getting there – Walk from Como, bus

If you’re wondering when to visit Lake Como, Italy, we would recommend the warmer months (May – October). During these months, the temperatures are perfect for lake-side relaxation and water-based activities. The Lake is usually at its warmest and busiest around July and August, but the tourist crowds are often well worth the weather!

Lake Como is celebrated for its wonderful Italian weather ; the area surrounding the lake enjoys an average of 200 days of sunshine per year! The climate is mild and consistent, with small variations in temperature both daily and throughout the year.

lake como europe trip

Despite being perched in the mountains, winters at Lake Como aren’t as frigid, and summers are not as sweltering as in other areas of a similar altitude! This is largely due to the lake acting as a thermal reserve.

In winter (November – March) tourism on the lake somewhat shuts down, with many of the Lake Como attractions and activities being closed off or not viable in winter. Many hotels and restaurants close their doors, but those which stay open usually offer significant discounts for the offseason.

Within each of the towns on Lake Como, getting around on foot is the best method of transportation. Each town is small enough to explore almost entirely on foot, and generally, there aren’t many alternatives!

When travelling between the towns, you’ll have a few more options. Buses and trains connect many of them, and the best way to get between the central and most popular towns on Lake Como is by boat.

Lake Como itinerary

These towns mostly sit across the water from one another on three distinct landmasses: the east and west banks of the expansive lake and the chunky peninsula that divides it in half! Thus, water transport is generally the shortest and quickest method for getting between them, perfect for a 3-day itinerary in Lake Como. It also offers some incredible scenery!

You can also opt to take private boats or taxi boats between destinations. These privately owned boats allow you to carry out your Lake Como itinerary with greater flexibility but come with a higher price tag than public transport. Most choose to travel to Lake Como via train or rental car from Milan.

Generally speaking, Lake Como is a very safe place to visit. Most of the towns and villages around the lake aren’t prone to the usual dangers associated with big cities! That being said, there are some general precautions you can take in order to ensure a smooth and safe trip!

As with pretty much anywhere on Earth, particularly where tourists congregate, there’s always a slight risk of petty theft. When you’re out in public, keep your personal belongings close and try to stay aware of your surroundings. Don’t venture out with large amounts of cash, and don’t bring unnecessary attention to yourself by wearing or carrying flashy or expensive items.

lake como europe trip

Be aware that in around 2010, the lake experienced some issues with pollution, which made it mostly unsuitable for swimming. The lake’s cleanliness has since been restored, but it’s worth checking with a local tourist office that the water is swimmable at the time of your visit.

If you’re swimming or partaking in water sports on the lake during your 3 days at Lake Como, make sure you take common safety precautions. Such as wearing a lifejacket and having someone keep an eye on you!

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Lake Como

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

How to Have a Magical Trip to Lake Como: 10 Things to See and Do

lake como europe trip

In the Lombardy region of northern Italy , Lake Como comprises many villages and villas that are worth a visit. Whether you are looking to explore history at the duomo , or venture onto the water, the lake and its environs are the perfect choice for an Italian holiday. Here are a few things to do around the lake if you’re undecided.

Duomo od como, for magnificent architecture.

Architectural Landmark, Historical Landmark

Cathedral of Como, Como, Italy

Take a seat at a restaurant or bar in the square out front and admire the magnificent 15th-century neogothic façade of the Duomo, including sculptures of Pliny the Elder and the Younger. The interior doesn’t disappoint either – with more than 400 years in the making, it spans architectural styles. Entrance, of course, is free.

Villa del Balbianello, for a mixture of impressive art and nature

Picture of Villa del Balbianello from a boat in Lake Como

This estate , on the western bank of the lake, offers an enchanting view of the area. Accessible by boat or via a short hike, the late 16th-century villa sits in a lovely garden with an assortment of beautiful flowers and greenery, creating a combination of art and nature that is hard to find elsewhere. It is a must-see for nature and history buffs.

Taxi Boat Varenna, for a boat trip on the lake

Historical Landmark

Varenna, Lake Como

This service offers short or long trips from Varenna to various attractions on the lake. The shortest tour is that of Varenna , lasting half an hour, and the longest is called George’s tour, which takes you past the villas dotting the shoreline, including George Clooney’s, in Laglio (2.5hrs). The boatman will also give suggestions as to where to have lunch or dinner on the lake.

Jungle Raider Park, for adventure enthusiasts

Basilica of sant'abbondio, for history lovers.

The Basilica of Sant’Abbondio dates back to the 5th century CE, making it one of the oldest churches in the area; however, the current Romanesque structure was built in the 11th century. The simple decor is balanced by a highly ornamented apse, with frescoes dating back to the mid-14th century. The building was constructed over different periods, so you can see how it was shaped by the trends of each era and understand more about the history of Como.

Museum Moto Guzzi, for motorcycle fans

This museum will definitely appeal to those with a passion for motorcycles and engines in general, as it lays out the history of motorcycles via displays of vehicles from different eras. Admission is free of charge, and it is conveniently situated if you are touring the various villages on the lake.

Botanical Garden at Hotel Villa Cipressi, for gardens with a view

Architectural Landmark

Part of the wonderful lakeside Hotel Villa Cipressi that was built in the 1400s, the Botanical Garden is open to the public, whereas the rest of the building belongs to the hotel and its restaurant. The century-old garden, running down to the lake, features an abundance of plants and flowers that nature lovers will adore. It is spread over different levels that overlook the water so you get lots of beautiful views.

Forte di Fuentes, for seeing a Spanish fort

This historic fortress is significant in that it represents one of the few remains of the Spanish dominion of the area. Dating back to the 17th century, it sits on the northern part of the lake, near Colico. If you are interested in local history, this really is a must, as walking through what used to be a stronghold, inclusive of a square and a church, will unravel tales of war and culture to boot.

Enoteca Principessa, for wine tasting

White wine poured in Italy

This winery can be found in Bellagio, where the lake divides into two branches. The proprietor is very knowledgeable and friendly and will guide you through his wide selection of great local wines. It is also possible to purchase wines and have them shipped home, even if you live on another continent. This place is definitely worth a stop-off if you fancy sampling one of Lombardy ‘s most famous exports.

Sentiero del Viandante, for the best hiking

Hiking Trail

If you are a fan of hiking and can’t decide among Como’s many trails, this should be a contender. It is 45km (28mi) long, so it should be broken up into three or four stretches. Taking ramblers through the east coast of Lake Como, the path dates from Roman times and is the perfect way to explore the beauty of nature and art in the area.

If you’re heading elsewhere, visit Milan for an unforgettable trip . See what there is to do there and which neighbourhoods are considered the most trendy . Check out our guide on the most breathtaking destinations in Northern Italy , too.

An Efficient 3-day Lake Como Travel Itinerary for 2024

What’s the first thing you think about when you hear “Lake Como”? For me there are a few things that come to mind: money, George Clooney, money, villas, money, Aperol Spritz, and oh…did I mention money? Luckily it’s possible to see a lot of Lake Como, Italy on a budget, without spending too much money.

I came to Lake Como to celebrate my 27th birthday, and in a lot of settings, I was still the youngest person present (YES!). But that doesn’t mean that coming to Como is going to mean you’re kicking it with grannies the whole time – a lot of areas are also popular with families on vacation and couples looking for a time-out on the weekend.

If you’re planning a trip to Italy, I hope you won’t pass up Lake Como – it totally exceeded my expectations in terms of how beautiful it was and how much I enjoyed myself. Here are some quick facts to get you started on your trip!

Here’s what you’ll see in three days on Lake Como, Italy

  • Menaggio , Villa Carlotta , & Villa Balbianello
  • Como , Nesso , & Bellagio
  • Varenna & Bellano

Duration: 3 days Dates traveled: 16 June - 19 June Recommended Accommodation on Lake Como: Of the places we stayed near Lake Como, these were my favorites and places I would love to return to:

Hotel Il Perlo Panoramico was our favorite place we stayed at on Lake Como. Fabulous premises with an amazing view over Bellagio . It’s too far to walk into town, but they offer a shuttle several times a day. If you go around sunset, you’ll have no trouble finding parking a 15 minute walk outside of town. They have wine tastings, a lovely breakfast, and the best view over Bellagio in my opinion.

Hotel Bellavista Located very centrally in Menaggio , and provides a beautiful view over the lake and excellent A/C for those summer months. Skip the hotel restaurant and go into town instead. Very convenient location for driving to Villa Balbianello and Villa Carlotta first thing in the morning 😉

lake como europe trip

My top tips for where to stay in Lake Como: Specific hotel recommendations, tips for choosing accommodation, what to look for, and the best towns to stay in near Lake Como.

Where to eat around Lake Como My favorite meal on this trip was at Ristorante Bilacus in Bellagio! It’s not on street level, so if you can find it, it’s unlikely to be too busy. Solid prices, good portions, and perfect for people watching.

Before you go Although it’s not strictly necessary to rent a car to explore Como, it will change your experience quite a bit! Without a car, you will have to stick to the main towns or haul around your luggage on a bus. I recommend DiscoverCars for your car rental in Italy (and when driving in Italy always get insurance).

How to get there There are a ton of cheap flights into the Milan airport at Bergamo, you can get here for $30 with Ryanair or other low cost carriers. This is also a great reason to come for an extended weekend – you can fit everything you’ll need into a carry-on!

Reaching Lake Como as a day trip

I want to mention just briefly two options for boat tours around Lake Como, which you can keep in mind while you’re reading this itinerary. Many of the places I’ve listed are also accessible as part of a boat tour, particularly my favorite towns and a few off-beat spots.

Especially if you’re not renting a car, you may want to take a boat tour to see a few places mentioned in this guide:

Lake Como, Italy 3-day itinerary

Day 1: menaggio, villa carlotta, & villa balbianello.

Lake Como is shaped like an upside down Y. On our trip, we will start on the west side of the lake, and drive down the coast to reach our various destinations.

There are three main places you’re going to want to see on Lake Como, Italy: Menaggio, Bellagio, and Varenna. These three are well-connected by ferry, and provide some of the best options for food and accomodation around the lake. It’s also possible to stay in one of the many smaller towns, especially if you’re driving by car.

When you’re in Menaggio, don’t miss grabbing an ice cream on the main square and taking a walk down the promenade. There are some churches in town as well which you can check out, but nothing too spectacular. Most of your time will be spent sitting at a cafe, enjoying the sunshine, and possibly taking a boat ride out on the lake.

Most of the things to do near Menaggio are further down the coast, in the form of two villas: Villa Carlotta and Villa Balbianello.

Villa Carlotta

The thing that stands out about Village Carlotta is its expansive gardens. While the interior is pretty similar to many other villas, the gardens stretch out for ages, and there are a lot of different paths you can take depending on how much time you want to spend there.

You’ll find huge hubs of hydrangeas, panoramic lookout spots, even a gorge that looks like an overgrown jungle. Giant rhubarb also flourishes here, looking like something out of prehistoric times. Hours pass by quickly as you weave between bushes and snap photos of flowers framing the lake.

Besides the gardens, there’s also an exhibit about the process of making silk. You can learn about silk worms themselves, how silk is made, and the history behind silk. In addition, of course, is a lot of rennaissance art and classical-style statues.

Villa Balbianello

This place has an incredible story. You probably know it best from the set of Star Wars or a James Bond flick, but besides being a filming location, it was also the home of an Italian explorer. Count Guido Monzino, the last person to live in this villa, was the first Italian to lead an expedition to Mount Everest.

With a guided tour, you can go inside the house and try to discover all its secrets. You’ll find secret passageways, hidden compartments, and trapdoors in this maze of a home. Tours are offered in English, and cost about 20 EUR to access the interior and the gardens.

One of its many oddities is the dome-shaped tree, which is trimmed by gardeners by hand every winter over the course of three weeks. It was specifically designed this way to preserve the view from the lake from inside the villa.

The last person to live in the villa, Count Guido Monzino, lived a life of adventure and decadance. This was his smoking room, with walls lined with wood that would absorb the smell of smoke. It’s hard to believe that he was living somewhat that looked like this in the 70s . Clearly a man from another time!

If you’re inspired by the location, you can get on a two-year waiting list to be married here – with a minimum downpayment of 15,000 euros for the venue alone.

After a long day of viewing villas, crash for the night in Menaggio and wake up the next morning for three completely unique adventures around Lake Como!

Day 2: Como, Nesso, & Bellagio

Today is one of our busiest days, as we hit three very different locations: Como, the largest city on the lake, Nesso, a tiny village you can easily drive past which is perched atop a waterfall, and Bellagio, a glamourous and historical town known as the “jewel of Lake Como”.

A lot of guides will tell you to skip Como, as it’s kind of a bigger city and you’re at Lake Como to explore towns instead, right? To be honest, I was unfairly biased against Como. Even though it’s much more populated, there’s no shortage of gelato or beautiful Italian alleyways in this ciy.

Perhaps its most famous sight is the Cathedral of Como, which becomes visible almost as soon as you approach the city by car or boat. In fact, it’s one of the few cathedrals around the lake with a notable interior. I’m not a huge “church person” but if you enjoy a good cathedral, don’t miss popping in while you’re here.

Second to the cathedral, Como is also famous as the home of Alessandro Volta. This guy invented the modern battery, and is memorialized in a monument along the pier. It costs money to go inside so we simply skipped it, but it surely made for a nice photo backdrop 😉

Tempio Voltiano, Como, Italy

Next is Nesso, one of the cutest spots along Lake Como – if you can find it. Nesso is a bit mislabeled on Google Maps, and if you follow where the map labels and Nesso, you’re likely to go up some steep and curvy italian roads and end up at a dead end. Nesso is actually right along the road, and you can accidentally drive right through on your quest to find it.

FINDING NESSO: Look for signs while you approach for Orrido di Nesso , or, on Google Maps, Falls and Orrido for the waterfall and Ponte Della Civera for the bridge itself (accessible only by foot). You may have to park a ways outside of town, and walk, in order to have somewhere to put your car, as there is very limited parking in town. Alternatively, you can take a boat tour to Nesso directly from Lecco.

After arriving in Nesso, you’ll find signs that direct you to the base of the waterfalls down a long set of uneven, rocky stairs.

At the bottom is an area is popular for swimming with the locals, despite the fact that Lake Como is freezing in June. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even swim to the foot of the waterfall through the ravine.

After your adventure to the bottom, you can stop at the top for a tiny beer to relax and spend a little time out of the sun. After that we’re going to Bellagio!

Bellagio is a very beautiful town, and easily the most famous on Lake Como – for this reason it’s also the most touristy, and can be packed full of people during the peak hours of the day. To avoid crowds, come to Bellagio around 6pm as the town starts to empty out. It’ll be much easier to park your car and still early enough to get a seat at a restaurant in town.

PARKING NEAR BELLAGIO: There are a number of parking lots outside of town, many of which will let you park for free. You just have to walk 15 minutes or so into the center. Ideally your hotel will have a nice map for you of where you can park.

What makes Bellagio so special is definitely its narrow alleys and stony streets. You can grab a gelato almost anywhere and enjoy exploring all the parts of town - which honestly won’t take you that long, since Bellagio is so tiny.

The town has two main areas to explore - the inner town and the area on the lakefront. When you arrive, you’re likely to come into down and have a lot of small streets to explore (and/or share with motorcyclists trying to bust through the crowds). Once you find the most famous street around the entire Lake (pictured below), you can walk down to the promenade where you’ll find even more restaurants with beautiful views.

A post shared by Monica @ notanomadblog.com (@notanomadblog) on Jun 24, 2017 at 2:24pm PDT

My one recommendation for food on this trip is found in Bellagio, called Ristorante Bilacus It’s not on street level, so if you can find it, it’s unlikely to be too busy. That said, it did fill up when we were there between 7 and 8pm so do be punctual if you want to compete for a spot for dinner!

Aperol Spritz with every meal – I’m not complaining!

Where to stay in Bellagio We loved Hotel Il Perlo Panoramico . It’s outside of town, so you can’t walk there, but you can either take one of their shuttles during peak hours or simply drive in yourself afterhours. The rooms were super stylish and the view was out of this world. They have nightly wine tastings as well - I wish we had stayed longer!

Day 3: Varenna & Bellano

If there’s somewhere I really would’ve liked to have spent more time, it would be Varenna. People seem to miss it, favoring Bellagio instead, while I found the town just as charming without being overrun by tourists. It still has all the things you expact from one of these cute lakeside villages: narrow passageways, colorful buildings, and delicious pizza. Check check check!

If you’re coming to Varenna by car from Bellagio, it’s most effective to do so by ferry. You can check the timetable of the ferries the day before when you’re in Bellagio, and plan to be in the row for the right destination at least 20 minutes in advance (I’d rather recommend 30-40 minutes depending on if you’re here during the high Summer season). You can buy a ticket for yourself and the car, and pop out to grab an ice cream while you wait for your boat to arrive.

Approaching Varenna by boat doesn’t take long, but be sure to have your camera out – these are views you can’t get of the town from anywhere else on land!

There’s not so much to do in Varenna besides walk around and explore. If you fancy a bite to eat, there are tons of places to go along the lakefront. When you arrive by ferry, follow the promenade to the right to find more of the town and more activities.

After a solid afternoon in Varenna, it’s time to wrap up our trip to Lake Como by visiting Bellano! Hop in the car and get driving.

Quick tip: How to use the ferry at Lake Como

Using the ferry at Lake Como is pretty simple. You just want to be early (about 30 minutes early) for your boat ride, and you can pay the same morning to either ride across the ferry as a person or even with your car. It is not possible to make a reservation. Taking a car costs just 4 € plus the cost for each passenger, 1,80 € each. You can find more details about the ferry timetable and detailed fare information online.

Similarly to the Orrido di Nesso , here you’re going to want to look for the Orrido di Bellano . Again - don’t trust Google Maps, just pay attention to the signs that will lead you to the best place to park.

There’s a small entrance fee to access the gorge, but I think it’s well worth it. Inside you’ll find walkways that connect canyon walls together so you can explore the inside of the orrido . You don’t need more than 30-45 minutes to explore this area, but you’ll be glad you did!

That’s a wrap!

Have you been to Lake Como? Which of these places have you seen? Let me know in the comments which was your favorite, or if I’m missing anywhere amazing around the Lake!

…pin this post for later!

A Budget Guide to Lake Como, Italy

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Lake Como, Italy frequently tops lists of the world's most scenic lakes. Whether or not your personal ratings match up, there is no denying that this area possesses the charm and beauty necessary to attract some of the world's wealthiest tourists, many of whom buy pricey mansions along the shoreline.

You need not bring riches to this popular destination. In fact, you can enjoy an affordable visit if you arrive armed with some of the tips highlighted below.  Lake Como makes a great budget travel escape when exploring Central Europe.

Welcome to Lake Como

Glaciers carved out the formation of Lake Como, which looks like an inverted letter Y on maps. There are towns located up and down the lake shore, but the most visited and revered of these line up in the middle of the inverted Y and are connected by ferry services. These are organized according to west shore, south shore, and east shore locations.

The best-known towns for visitors are Bellagio, Menaggio, and Lierna. Other cities that attract visitors include Varenna , and Como.

When to Visit

The most popular season for visitors is summer, with its relative warmth for exploring and boating. Winter visitors usually combine a lake visit with skiing in the nearby Alps. Several Italian ski resorts are a short distance from Lake Como, and St. Moritz, Switzerland is also within about two hours, assuming Maloja Pass is open.

Autumn is an excellent season for visiting Lake Como, as accommodations are more likely to be available amid much smaller crowds. If you arrive outside of those warm months, be certain to check for closings on roadways, rail services and exhibits. Many will use the quieter months to retool or reduce services.

Where to Stay

For an area of relatively small population, the Lake Como region offers a wide array of accommodations at all price points. Many of these operations are rather small, and the good ones book up quickly with word-of-mouth publicity and repeat customers. If you find a place you like, it's best to make reservations as early as possible.

In Menaggio, the Garni Corona Hotel is located on the town square or piazza . A renovation was completed in 2015, and room rates appear to be a bit higher than in years past. But this is still a good mid-range choice that offers a great location and free breakfast each morning.

A short walk uphill from town reveals the Menaggio Youth Hostel , which almost certainly must offer one of the best views of any hostel in Europe. Triple rooms can be had for under $50/night.

Airbnb.com lists the average nightly rate in this area at about $135 USD. But a recent search revealed roughly 300 properties offered at less than $100/night. You'll find some of those selections are impractical if not conveniently connected to good transportation or a heavily visited town along the lake. In other words, to connect with some of the best offers, you might need to rent a car. Plan accordingly.

Where to Eat

Larian cuisine prevails in the Lake Como area, but you can find inexpensive meals in many of the towns. Beware of the lakefront places that cater mostly to tourists. Although some of them are excellent, others serve up overpriced meals that rely more on views than delicious food.

You can splurge here without breaking the bank. Look for places that offer fixed price menus, which typically provide an appetizer, entree, and dessert.

In the town squares (piazzas) of Lake Como's towns and villages, quite a few deli-style restaurants serve sandwiches, pizza, and other modestly priced food. This is not a place where you'll find large chain restaurants. Be grateful for the break and explore the possibilities.

The local favorites here include braised wild boar (native to the hillsides along the lake), and fresh lake perch.

Getting Around

Trains run about a dozen times a day between Varenna Esino and Milan Centrale . The trip takes about an hour, and budget seats are sometimes less than $10 USD. From the train station, it's a short walk to the Varenna docks, where access opens up to other nearby communities via efficient ferry services.

If you can't afford an extended boat trip on Lake Como, you can at least enjoy the ferry rides . A short run between Varenna and Menaggio, for example, is less than €5 and often quite enjoyable. A band of thunderstorms can result in delays or cancellations, so keep your plans flexible.

If you have a car, be aware that many of the town centers here are devoted to pedestrian traffic, and parking might be difficult in summer. But those with cars can enjoy some terrific scenic drives .

Buses also connect the Lake Como towns, and are useful in navigating some of the larger urban areas where walking is more difficult. Cabs are not always easy to find here, and tend to be expensive.

Castle of Vezio

If you're up to it, another great afternoon can be spent climbing the trail from the Hotel Olivedo and exploring the Castle of Vezio , ( Castello di Vezio ) which hovers over Varenna on a steep hillside. This venue was featured on an episode of CBS-TV's  The Amazing Race .

Views from the grounds of the castle are spectacular, and once you hoof it to the top, you'll understand why this place was chosen as a defensive position in the Middle Ages. Taxis will take you from Varenna to the summit for about €12. If you hike, expect the ascent to take about 45-60 minutes.

Admission to the grounds is €4. A falconry demonstration also is staged at certain times of the year. Be sure to check schedules for the castle, as times of operation vary by season.

Day Trip: Milan

Milan  is just more than an hour by train from the Varenna station. Although some claim it takes a back seat to other Italian cities such as Venice and Rome , it is nonetheless a city that will keep you busy with quality attractions for several days. This is the home of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper , and you'll need reservations and tickets to catch a glimpse of the masterpiece.

But the city also offers a peek into the world of high fashion, some historic gems, and the world-famous cathedral ( Duomo ) that is in itself worth a day trip.

Be aware of your time of day for travel to-and-from Milan. Avoid the peak commuter times and save money on train tickets.

More Lake Como Tips

Villa Carlotta  offers a combination of museum and gardens that's tough to match on any other 70,000 square-foot patch of Italian soil. The villa dates back to the end of the 17th century, and you'll find about 150 varieties of flowering plants in the gardens, which are open all year.

Funicolare Como-Brunate  provides rides to a beautiful vista, quiet walks, and some restaurants. The town of Brunate is just east of the village of Como. Although the funicular cars can be crowded, the town generally is not. Rides are less than  €6 each way.

Como is at the bottom of the western leg of the lake's inverted Y shape, about 25 kilometers by road from Bellagio. It is a fun place to explore, and offers an excellent duomo   that dates back to the 14th century.

Beware of wild boars if you explore the wooded areas surrounding the lake. They might be a favorite dish in local restaurants, but they can also pose a threat to hikers.

Some visitors allow themselves to be talked into attempts to swim across the lake. Even at its narrowest points, the distances are far more challenging than first appearances might suggest. The water is cold, even in summer. There are events in which experienced swimmers try this, but they have support staff following closely.

In places such as Bellagio, it's fun to set aside an afternoon to "get lost." No plans, no itineraries. Wander the narrow streets and explore the native shops.

First things first: where exactly is Lake Como, anyway? And how do you find the most popular towns and villas along this gigantic, confusingly-laid-out lake?

Here’s the most general answer: Lake Como is located about an hour north of Milan and is part of Italy’s Lombardy region.

Parts of Lake Como are located fairly close to the border with Switzerland, but the lake is contained entirely within Italy.

small boats exploring lake como with pink flowers in the foreground

Lake Como is famously shaped like an upside-down “Y”, with the northern branch generally referred to as Colico, the southwestern branch as Como, and the southeastern branch as Lecco.

The city of Como is located at the far southwestern corner of the lake, and the town of Varenna is located further north along the Lecco (southeastern) side of the lake.

Bellagio, nicknamed the “Pearl of Lake Como”, is located where the 3 branches of the lake meet, and is realistically the furthest northern point that most day trips to Lake Como will reach.

If that all sounds confusing, don’t worry–we’ve included a downloadable map of Lake Como with the most popular day trip destinations marked at the bottom of this blog post.

In this Lake Como day trip guide, I’m going to focus on the two most common methods of travel between Milan and Lake Como for first-time visitors: train and organized day tour.

Technically, you can take the bus to Lake Como from Milan as well, or even drive yourself, but neither of those options is practical for the majority of travelers planning a day trip.

And, of course, when I mention train… I do in fact mean train + ferry, as the train can only get you as far as your first stop!

When it comes to your starting point, though, here are the easiest routes:

kate storm and ranger storm on the trenord train platform in como italy

Step 1: Take a train to Lake Como from Milan.

Traveling from Milan to Lake Como via train means taking a regional route, which means there’s no real need to book your train tickets in advance.

Prices are fixed for these routes, and they have an open seating plan.

However, for checking train schedules and planning your route, Omio (our favorite train ticket aggregate) comes in handy!

Train From Milan to Varenna

Taking the train from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino takes about an hour and whisks you right to town!

From the train station, you’re a quick, easy, downhill walk away from the water and the ferry station (just follow the crowds).

When you’re ready to leave Varenna, you can hop a ferry to Bellagio and (if you take the fast ferry–more on that later) you can be in Bellagio in about 15 minutes.

Train From Milan to Como

For an even shorter route, take a train from Milan to either Como Nord Lago or Como S. Giovann i–both stations are within walking distance of the historic center of the city!

Traveling to Como S. Giovanni takes about 40 minutes via train while heading to Como Nord Lago takes closer to an hour.

Keep in mind that not all trains along these routes leave from Milano Centrale, so pay close attention to what train station your ticket leaves from!

Once you’re done exploring Como, a logical next stop is Bellagio, which is 45 minutes away by the fast ferry (hydrofoil) and more than 2 hours away by the slow ferry (battello).

Step 2: Hop on a ferry to your next destination(s) along Lake Como.

Most travelers visiting Lake Como on a day trip understandably want to visit more than one town–which for independent travelers often means riding the ferry!

The official Navigazione Laghi website is the perfect place to review the ferry schedule and plan your day.

However, it’s important to note that there are 2 kinds of ferries on Lake Como: hydrofoils, or fast ferries, and battellos, or slow ferries.

Only tickets for the slow ferry can be purchased online in advance–for fast ferry tickets, you’ll need to buy your tickets in person!

Add in the fact that ferries can sell out and that taking the hydrofoil makes for a much easier day trip along some routes, and it’s understandable why it’s important to plan your route and book your ferry tickets early in the day.

This is especially important if you’re visiting Lake Como in the summer !

Want to make life simple and avoid worrying about navigating trains, ferries, and attractions during your one day in Lake Como?

If so, organized day trips like this can be an excellent value!

This incredibly popular day trip to Lake Como from Milan includes round-trip transportation, a visit to a few villages (including Bellagio), a boat cruise, and a visit to a villa.

… And all of this is accomplished without you having to worry about any planning or navigation!

If you’re flexible about exactly what sightseeing you do on Lake Como but want to make sure you have a relaxing day on the lake, booking an organized day trip is a wonderful option.

Hoping to enjoy several of the best things to do on Lake Como in a day?

While a full outline of the best attractions on the lake includes days (or weeks, if you include hiking) worth of exploration, the options outlined here are among the most popular with daytrippers for very good reason.

Keep in mind that no one day in Lake Como has room for all of these: plan on enjoying around 3, depending on your sightseeing style.

Take a boat tour across Lake Como.

Without a doubt, one of the top ways to enjoy Lake Como is to take a boat tour across it!

If you’re taking a day trip to Lake Como on a budget, the ferries do offer lovely views–but for a chance to get up close and personal with the shore, various villas, and stunning viewpoints, a boat cruise like this is a wonderful option for independent travelers.

(Many organized Lake Como day trips, like this popular one , include a boat cruise as part of their itinerary).

Visit a villa.

Lake Como is famous for its opulent villas–some of which you can visit!

During your day trip to Lake Como, consider paying a visit to the gardens of a lakeside villa and basking in the beautiful views.

Some, though not all, villas allow visitors inside as well, though be sure to plan ahead if you hope to step inside (some interiors require a guided tour).

Villa del Balbianello (the Star Wars/James Bond villa) and Villa Carlotta are two of the most famous villas along Lake Como, and both are stunning.

If you hope to visit a villa within a town you’re already planning to explore, Villa Monastero in Varenna, Villa Melzi d’Eril in Bellagio (gardens only), and Villa Olmo in Como are all wonderful options.

Explore the picturesque village of Bellagio.

Nicknamed the “Pearl of Lake Como”, Bellagio just may be the most iconic village on Lake Como!

Situated at the point where the 3 legs of the lake converge, Bellagio offers plenty of sightseeing and wonderful views.

Don’t skip wandering along the waterfront or climbing the steep hills into town!

At the top of Salita Serbelloni, along Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, you’ll find one of the most famous photo spots in Lake Como.

Check out Varenna.

The colorful, charming small town of Varenna is a perfect Lake Como day trip destination: not only is Varenna one of the best towns on Lake Como to visit, but it’s also one of the easiest to get to!

Direct trains from Milan deliver you right to town, where you can then start exploring immediately.

Be sure to meander along the waterfront, check out the Old Harbor, visit Villa Monastero, and, if you’re up for a bit of a climb, head up to Castello di Vezio for some incredible views!

Pay a quick visit to Menaggio.

The tiny village of Menaggio is the third point that, along with Bellagio and Varenna, makes up the “golden triangle” of villages at the heart of Lake Como.

Its gorgeous lakefront and peaceful town center don’t take long to explore, but they’re absolutely beautiful!

And, as a bonus, Menaggio’s historic center is flat–a welcome contrast to the steep hills of Varenna and Bellagio.

Explore Como, the largest city on Lake Como.

Como, the lake’s namesake city, sits at the southwest corner of the lake and is an easy addition to a Lake Como day trip!

A bit less picturesque than smaller towns like Varenna, but beautiful in its own way, Como offers gorgeous lake views (especially if you ride the funicular up to Brunate), beautiful churches (don’t miss the Duomo!) and lots of attractions to explore (including Villa Olmo).

Como also happens to be extremely well-connected to Milan by train, making it an easy starting or ending point for your day.

Hoping to take an independent day trip to Lake Como from Milan?

With so many towns and activities to choose from, there are endless ways to pull it off–but these are two of the most popular itineraries.

Both are extremely doable in a day, especially if you keep an eye on the ferry times!

Bellagio + Varenna Lake Como Day Trip Itinerary

For an easy day trip to Lake Como that’s light on transportation worries and heavy on charm, consider focusing entirely on Bellagio and Varenna.

Take the train to Varenna, explore the town, and then hop over to Bellagio via hydrofoil.

There, enjoy the best things to do in Bellagio and potentially take a boat cruise before heading back to Varenna and then to Milan.

Speedy sightseers may also squeeze Menaggio in here!

Pros + Cons of This Lake Como Day Trip

Benefits of structuring your day trip this way include spending the bulk of your time in the most popular part of the lake and cutting down on transportation time.

Meanwhile, cons include that this day trip only makes room for a small section of Lake Como.

Varenna + Bellagio + Como Day Trip Itinerary

Want to plan a Lake Como day trip that involves seeing as much of the lake as possible, without an organized group tour?

Start your day the same way as above, with a train ride to Varenna and exploring the town–but quickly.

From there, head to Bellagio for a quick visit before hopping the hydrofoil to Como.

Keep in mind that the hydrofoil to Como takes 45 minutes, while the slow ferry takes almost 2.5 hours–so it’s important to plan this part well!

Once in Como, explore the attractions and enjoy the sunset over the lake before hopping a train back to Milan.

downtown como italy around sunset

The biggest benefit of structuring your day trip to Lake Como as a loop that starts in Varenna and ends in Como is that you get to see a lot of the lake in one day!

Cons include that you have to be much more careful timing your ferry journeys, and with so much time on the water dedicated to ferry rides, a small boat cruise is hard to fit in.

Of course, the ferries also offer lovely views, so depending on your sightseeing style, this might not be a problem!

view of lake como italy with a ferry in the foreground

When it comes to sightseeing, less is more.

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to visit all the best attractions on Lake Como in one day–not even close!

Rather than be tempted to add on just one more town or villa, consider slowing down, instead: each of Lake Como’s villages have hours (or more) of sightseeing to offer.

And, at the end of the day, admiring views of the lake–from villas, boats, and even just the shore–is one of the absolute best things to do around Lake Como, and you are spoiled for choice when it comes to places to do so.

Get oriented with the layout of Lake Como before your day trip.

Since planning a Lake Como day trip generally involves multiple stops around the lake, your day will much less confusing if you have a vague idea of where you are in relation to Milan at any given time.

Be sure to reference a map, especially when planning your stops, in order to ensure you’re moving in a logical path.

We’ve included a map at the bottom of this blog post with the most popular Lake Como day trip destinations marked to help get you started!

Buy your ferry tickets early in the day.

When you arrive at Lake Como on the morning of your day trip, regardless of which town you start in, your next stop should be the ferry desk to buy tickets and plot your route!

This is especially important if you’re enjoying a summer trip to Italy when Lake Como is at its most crowded and some ferries do sell out.

With a limited time frame to work with on a day trip, buying your ferry tickets in the morning and planning your sightseeing stops accordingly can make your day much less stressful (and avoid a potentially lengthy ride back if the hydrofoil you want sells out).

The Navigazione Laghi website is great for planning your day but doesn’t allow you to buy hydrofoil (aka fast ferry) tickets online.

Know your battello from your hydrofoil.

When it comes to taking the ferry around Lake Como, you’ll want to keep an eye on more than just the timetable!

A battello is a standard slow ferry, and while peaceful, takes much longer than a hydrofoil.

A hydrofoil is a much faster ferry option.

Technically, you can board either boat to get from place to place, but on a day trip, you’ll need to be aware of which boat you’re boarding!

For example, to travel from Bellagio to Como takes more than 2 hours on the battello, and 35-40 minutes via hydrofoil.

We recommend using the Navigazione Laghi website (the company that operates the ferries) to check timetables and sketch out your day.

If you want to enjoy lunch overlooking the lake, do your research and make reservations!

If your dream Lake Como day trip includes a gorgeous lunch overlooking the lake, then you’ll definitely want to plan in advance!

First, be sure to research restaurants of your choice: while there are lovely restaurants on the water, there are also plenty of tourist traps.

And second, make reservations as soon as you can commit to dates, especially if you want a table right against the water!

Well-reviewed restaurants in ideal locations like La Terrazza Lake Como do book up in advance.

Consider whether you want to take a small boat tour.

Taking a small boat tour is easily one of the best things to do in Lake Como!

This can take many forms, either by signing up for a group tour, signing up for a private boat tour with a captain , or even (for those who know how to drive boats) renting a boat yourself .

The essential thing all these options have in common, though, is that small speedboats offer phenomenal sightseeing opportunities on Lake Como that allow you to get up close with famous spots (like George Clooney’s villa) from the water, as well as simply enjoy the sunshine and impeccable views.

With only one day in Lake Como to work with, though, there’s also no doubt that boat tours eat into your sightseeing time, and the ferries offer beautiful views as well (though not nearly as decadent of an experience).

Small boat tours can last as little as an hour or as long as a full day, but 2-3 hours is fairly common.

One of the perks of signing up for a Lake Como day trip like this is that boat cruises are often included as part of your transportation around the lake, rather than relying on ferries–a chance to enjoy the best of both worlds!

Can you take a day trip to Lake Como from Milan?

Yes, absolutely!

Lake Como is one of the best day trips from Milan and is very popular with travelers from around the world.

Is it worth going to Lake Como for one day?

Yes, it’s definitely worth taking a day trip to Lake Como!

While you can’t see all, or even most, of Lake Como in one day, the beauty of visiting Lake Como is that it’s not really a destination about checking off museums or viewpoints–simply being there is a big part of the experience.

For that reason, even with one day in Lake Como, you’re bound to walk away feeling like you enjoyed a wonderful sample of what the area has to offer.

And, since it only takes about an hour to reach Lake Como from Milan, it’s a very doable day trip!

Do you need a tour to visit Lake Como from Milan?

You definitely don’t need a tour to take a day trip to Lake Como from Milan, but you might find that you’d like to take one!

Self-planning a Lake Como day trip is very doable and perfect for independent travelers, but it also involves a lot of time management: checking train schedules and comparing them to ferry schedules, knowing whether you’re boarding a fast or slow ferry, always being aware of your next move, and making sure any tours or attractions you visit fit into your schedule.

Popular organized day tours like this offer a wonderful overview of Lake Como with no stress, and for those hoping to enjoy a boat cruise as part of their day trip, also offer great value for money!

How long does it take to get from Milan to Lake Como?

Generally speaking, plan to spend about an hour traveling from Milan to Lake Como.

That can vary a bit depending on the method of transportation you choose and what town you choose for your first destination, but it’s a good rule of thumb to plan around.

Is there a direct train from Milan to Lake Como?

Yes, there are many direct trains from Milan to Lake Como–with the caveat that “Lake Como” isn’t exactly a single place, and you won’t find any train stations named that!

One of the most popular train routes for travelers planning a day trip from Milan to Lake Como includes taking a train from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino (located in Varenna and within walking distance of the ferry).

For day trips starting in the city of Como, taking the train from Milano Centrale to Como S. Giovanni or Como Nord Largo (both located in the city of Como and convenient for day trippers) are two other popular options.

Is Lake Como walkable?

Yes and no.

The most popular places to visit in Lake Como on a day trip, such as Bellagio, Como, Menaggio, and Varenna, are all walkable within themselves.

However, they are definitely not within walking distance of each other!

In other words, you definitely need to plan on additional transportation–ferries, a private boat tour, trains, or some combination thereof, in order to pull off the perfect Lake Como day trip from Milan.

What’s the prettiest part of Lake Como for a day trip?

Lake Como is an absurdly beautiful place–it is one of those places whose beauty can’t adequately be captured in photos–so choosing just one place is a big ask!

However, the picturesque “Golden Triangle” villages of Varenna, Bellagio, and Menaggio–plus the water views you can experience ferrying between them–can definitely be counted among the prettiest parts of Lake Como.

We’ve marked this map of Lake Como with the most popular places to visit on the lake for day trippers, including the towns of Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, and the city of Como.

We’ve also included 3 of the most iconic villas to visit along Lake Como that aren’t in those towns, Villa del Balbianello (aka the Star Wars/James Bond villa) and Villa Carlotta.

No one day trip to Lake Como from Milan could realistically visit all of these places, of course, but choosing 2-3 of them, plus a boat ride or two along the lake, makes for a fantastic day!

A guide to Lake Como's highlights — villas, promenades and aperitivo spots not to miss

The western branch of this northern Italian lake is its highlight, home to romantic villas and revamped waterfront promenades in pretty Como city.

A view of the scenery in lake como. The skies are clear, and the water is calm and blue. A green hill can be seen on one side with colourful villas dotted.

Lake Como conveys notions of easy elegance and the Italian art of slow living, and has come to stand for something bigger than it is. Officially called Lario, Italy ’s third-biggest lake has been drawing visitors since the 18th century, when it was a popular stop for European nobles on their grand tours. More recently, it stepped into the spotlight as the backdrop for films including Ocean’s Twelve and Casino Royale . But the lake’s prestige dates to Roman times, when Julius Ceasar drained a swamp at its southwestern end, strategically located near Alpine passes, and funded the creation of a city known as Novum Comum.

It laid the foundation for Como, the main hub to this day and the reason why the lake is commonly known as Como. This spring is the best time to visit the city in over a decade, as sections of its waterfront sidewalks, which had been cordoned off for expansion since 2008, are once again open to walkers. The centre is dominated by the azure dome of the Duomo di Como , one of the last gothic cathedrals built in the country. Behind it is Teatro Sociale , and to one side is the shopping street of Via Vittorio Emanuele II. It’s a good place to pick up a souvenir: mulberry trees were planted on Lake Como’s hills in the 15th century, and boutiques like A Picci sell handkerchiefs and scarves using their silk.

Next to the shop, Via Lambertenghi leads to Via Alessandro Volta , named after the physicist credited as the inventor of the electric battery. The townhouse where he was born in 1745 is marked with a plaque, and around it are some of the most coveted addresses of the time. This is not least thanks to their giardini pensili — gardens built on the Roman walls that once guarded the city centre.

Equally evocative is Passeggiata Lino Gelpi , between the lake and shorefront private gardens. The path’s name pays tribute to the 19th-century mayor who reclaimed a strip of land from villa owners to pave Como’s most scenic public footpaths. It’s a front-row spot from which to watch the lake’s seaplanes land, and it’s especially lovely in spring, when wisteria blooms along the banks.

Continue walking along the waterside road for half an hour to Cernobbio , one of the lake’s most popular resorts. Local Comaschi come to eat at Harry’s Bar , in a piazza by the shore; it serves whitefish from the lake, but the pick is the sole meuniere, floured and pan fried to crispy perfection. Alternatively, taxis wind up the hillside to Il Gatto Nero . It serves specialities from the surrounding region, such as ravioli with ossobuco and saffron, and has become popular among visiting celebrities thanks to its view of the lake.

For a different perspective, take to the water. Ferries link Como to the Alto Lago (‘High Lake’), its northernmost shore. But, if budget allows, the transport mode of choice are Riva runabouts . High-end hotels offer private rides on these mahogany speedboats as part of their activity programmes. Otherwise, companies like Como Classic Boats pick visitors up from almost any hamlet with a dock.

Among the most prettiest is Torno , on the western shore, with red-tiled roofs and a waterfront bell tower. It’s opposite Passalaqua ; built in the 18th century for a scion of local nobility, this villa was crowned the world’s top hotel by The World’s 50 Best in 2023, a year after opening. A glimpse is all you’ll get, as only guests are allowed in, but as an alternative visit Villa d’Este , the lake’s historic grand dame hotel. Further down the shores, highlights include Villa Carlotta and neoclassical Villa del Balbianello , which juts out on a promontory in Ossuccio.

A former fishing community, Ossuccio is also a gateway to Isola Comacina and UNESCO-listed Sacro Monte di Ossuccio , 14 chapels leading to a hillside sanctuary. From its waterfront, the view is a snapshot of what makes Lake Como so alluring: the unassuming hamlets next to larger-than-life villas, and the green, wooded hills sloping down to the deep-blue water. In the distance, always in view, are the Alps. From the Roman Empire to modern-day Hollywood, it’s a scene that’s charmed through the ages.

3 highlights not to miss in Lake Como

1. Teatro Sociale Como’s 19th-century theatre has always had a special affinity with the opera. This summer, it’ll join other venues across the country in marking 100 years since the death of Giacomo Puccini with an open-air production of Turandot, the composer’s final masterpiece.

2. Villa Carlotta The 20-acre botanical garden of Villa Carlotta is a much-loved retreat on the lake. There are monumental trees, a citrus tunnel and a path among the ferns, but it’s most famous for its azaleas, which bloom into full cushions of red, white and pink for a few weeks each May.

3. Isola Comacina The lake’s only island is mostly uninhabited, but its trails lead past olives, lindens and laurels, as well as houses for short-term artists in residence. Every June, the popular San Giovanni Festival reenacts a fire that devastated the island in the 12th century with a red-tinted firework display.

COMO CITY Lake Como

Located on the Italian-Swiss border, the  city of Como in Italy  overlooks the southwest end of its  lake  and is surrounded by green ridge hills, resulting in unparalleled, natural scenery.

Como is home to some of the best attractions in the Lombardy region, and it is worth a visit even for a simple stroll through the streets of the city center. It is an ideal destination for those visiting Lake Como for a day and those staying longer .

Ready to hit the road? Here are what to do during your visit to Como and the best experiences you can have!

Como City, Italy, Lake Como

THE TOWN CENTER Perfect combination of architecture, history and culture

Como, Italy: Piazza Vittoria

Enclosed within imposing medieval walls – of which Porta Torre , overlooking Piazza Vittoria , is one of the most scenic gates – the Como’s city center is home to fascinating squares , each with its own personality.

Piazza Duomo, Cathedral and Broletto

The main square is Piazza Duomo , which houses the imposing Como Cathedral ( Duomo di Como ): an eclectic building, combining Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. The Duomo is open for visits on weekdays from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on holidays from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Just between the cathedral and its bell tower is the Broletto , the former town hall that now often hosts art exhibitions and assemblies. It is a visually striking building, with a facade banded with Lombard marble in three different colors: white, gray and red.

Como, Italy: Piazza San Fedele and its church

Piazza San Fedele and its Basilica

Just a 3-minute walk from Piazza Duomo is Piazza San Fedele . This square, originally a grain market, is home to a beautiful Romanesque church dating back to 1120: the Basilica of San Fedele .

If you happen to pass by this little square on a Saturday, you will have the chance to come across numerous stalls, where you can find antiques and handicrafts .

Piazza Volta and Piazza Mazzini

If you arrive in Como at the San Giovanni station and head downtown, Piazza Volta will be the first square in the historic center you encounter (less than a 10-minute walk). Piazza Mazzini is the adjacent square.

These two squares are the center of Como’s nightlife . Among elegant Art Nouveau buildings and stores selling typical products are numerous restaurants, wine bars and pubs to satisfy all tastes.

Don’t miss the opportunity to stroll along the nearby Via Vitani , one of the richest vestiges of the medieval city of Como that is home to historic trattorias and fine stores.

A WALK ALONG THE LAKEFRONT The best places to take pictures

Life Electric, Como

The historic center overlooks the lakefront with Piazza Cavour , where the office for purchasing boat tickets is located.

I recommend you go left, because the promenade leading to Como Lago station is under renovation and does not allow you to fully enjoy the experience. Here are a few attractions not to be missed on the lakefront!

Life Electric

As you walk along the lakefront you will see Life Electric , a monument by archistar Daniel Libeskind.

The  avant-garde work is located at the bottom of a small artificial dam (called Diga Foranea) and is a homage to the voltaic pile invented by Alessandro Volta .

Follow this Volta tour if you want to discover other places in the city of Como related to the scientist’s life!

Como, Italy: Volta museum

Lakeside gardens, Volta Museum & War memorial

Talking of Alessandro Volta, don’t miss the nearby Volta museum , which collects evidence of his work and even the  first version of the electric battery . The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The regular admission ticket costs €5.

Next to the museum is the garden area overlooking the lake , a popular place for tourists and locals, especially during the summer season. Festivals and musical or culinary events are often organized here.

This area is also home to the imposing War Memorial ( Monumento ai Caduti ), a 33-meter (108-foot) tall rationalist-style building dedicated to the 650 fallen Como soldiers of World War I. From the top of the monument there is a magnificent view of Lake Como and the city. It is usually possible to climb to the top of the monument on Sundays, but currently it is only possible to do so during specific occasions as the structure is undergoing restoration.

VILLA OLMO A neoclassical villa surrounded by a large park

Villa Olmo, Como

If you love historic villas , stroll along the romantic Passeggiata Lino Gelpi (which starts a few steps from the War Memorial) and reach the impressive Villa Olmo , a neoclassical building dating back to 1780.

The park is open daily from 7 am and closes at 11 pm in the summer season (early April to late September) and at 7 pm in the winter season (early October to late March).

Villa Olmo is also the starting point of a simple and beautiful walk among villas and botanical rarities : the Chilometro della Conoscenza .

A few tips for your stay in Como

BRUNATE & SPINA VERDE To admire the city of Como from above

Como Brunate cable car

The Como-Brunate funicular

Want to enjoy a  breathtaking view  of the city of Como? Visit  Brunate , a town that overlooks Como from the top of a hill 715 meters (about 2,345 ft) high.

The  Como-Brunate funicular – which runs from Piazza Alcide de Gasperi , very close to the Como Lago train station – will take you to Brunate in a few minutes (see timetables and fares ).

Once in Brunate, you can walk for about 20 minutes and reach the Volta Lighthouse ( Faro Voltiano) , that can be visited every day except non-holiday Wednesdays, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (closed in case of bad weather).

There have also been reports of inefficiencies in dealing with people with disabilities (particularly regarding the return to Como from Brunate). If you have special needs, I recommend that you contact the company in advance through its official website.

Amazing view of Como from Respaù hill

Spina Verde park

Spina Verde Park is a protected forest which covers an area of 1000 hectares (3.86 square miles). The park is located southwest of Como and collects many sites of panoramic, historical, and natural interest .

One of the most interesting attractions is the tower of Castello Baradello , which stands on a hill overlooking the center of Como. It is a military fortification built in the 6th century by the locals (who were under the Roman Empire) and later restored by Frederick Barbarossa, the Holy Roman Emperor.

The easiest way to reach Castel Baradello is by following a path that starts from Piazza San Rocco and leads to the tower in about 30 minutes .

My friends at Slow Lake Como offer a very cool experience: a 3-hour tour that will give you exclusive access to the castle and also includes an aperitivo with wine and local products and breathtaking views of Lake Como. Find out about it here !

Public boat service is perfect if you are on a day trip and want to reach other towns such as Argegno ,  Bellagio ,  Tremezzina  or other towns of the lake.

Beaches in Como

If you want to relax on a beach, you can go to Lido Villa Olmo , a beach with two swimming pools and a bar that offers a beautiful view of Lake Como and the opposite coast.

Otherwise, on the opposite shore (at the end of Viale Geno) is the recently opened Lido Giulietta al Lago , which offers all the services you need for your day and often organizes events in its very popular bar and restaurant.

Are there any golf courses in and around Como?

' src=

Hello Anthony! I don’t know any golf clubs in the city of Como. The closest ones are the Circolo Golf Villa d’Este, in Montorfano, and the Monticello Golf Club, in Cassina Rizzardi. If you are interested in something closer to Lake Como, I can recommend Menaggio and Cadenabbia Golf Club.

Hello Alessandro, We are exploring our first trip to Lake Como in the off-season 2024. Your site is very comprehensive and greatly appreciated. Could you touch on medical facilities on the Lake should an emergency arise? We’d be traveling from the US.

Hi Bella, thank you for your appreciation! Here are some hospitals / ER around Lake Como:

This hotel has just been crowned the best in Europe – and second-best in the world

600 hotel industry experts have voted and Lake Como’s Passalacqua has claimed the second spot in the prestigious World’s 50 Best Hotels list

Liv Kelly

Like lots of Italy ’s most gorgeous destinations, Lake Como has felt the pressure of overtourism in recent years (so much so that it’s considering implementing an entry fee ). But its beautiful scenery and ornate buildings mean it’s still a mainstay on plenty of our bucket lists.

And somewhere that combines both those things, as well as world-class service, is the Passalacqua hotel , which has just been named as the best hotel in Europe and the second best on the planet.

The World’s 50 Best Hotels are voted on by over 600 industry experts, and the full list for 2024 has just been published. Passalacqua claimed the overall crown in 2023 , and we spoke to Como-born Valentina De Santis, the hotelier at the helm of this outstanding hotel.

‘To open a hotel is an experience that is hard to put into words,’ Valentina says. ‘It is very much like when you prepare a theatre show, you spend months, even years, planning every single detail of the performance, you feel the pressure that everything needs to be perfect, you dream of it every night, and all of a sudden you find yourself on stage with hundreds of spectators watching at you.’ You can read the interview here .

In second place across Europe was Cheval Blanc in Paris , and in third it was Claridge’s in London ( one of three top 50 entries for the UK capital ). Check out the list of the 10 finest hotels in Europe below.

The 10 best hotels in Europe

  • Passalacqua, Lake Como
