Azay-le-Rideau, a must see for Loire Valley chateau tours

With its majestic chateaux, historic towns and rolling vineyards, the Loire Valley is one of the world’s best-known World Heritage Sites listed by UNESCO. Think magical properties such as Chenonceau, Chambord and Cheverny; towns like Blois, Amboise and Orléans; and internationally renowned wines such as Chinon, Saumur and Vouvray.

Far more than just a collection of fancy aristocratic homes, the UNESCO-listed area extends for 280km along the central section of the river, a ‘cultural landscape’ that combines history, heritage and architecture with the flora, fauna and rural landscape that borders France’s longest river.

So if you really want to get under the skin of this captivating area, it pays to take a tour with an insider who can bring every place zinging vividly to life. Enter Loire Valley Chateau Tours run by husband and wife team Graham and Jacqueline. After careers in Britain’s National Health Service, in education and in retail, the couple moved to France just before Brexit to run a luxury Chambre d’Hôte (guest house) and run tours which take in the most enchanting castles of the Loire Valley.

Tour the Chateaux of the Loire Valley

tours loire chateaux

Tour guests stay at their home in the tranquil village of Ranton, half an hour from the medieval town of Chinon. Built in the 18 th century from local Tuffeau stone – building material for the Loire Valley’s signature white chateaux – Maison de Lavande was originally a winemaker’s house and the grape press can still be seen in their underground wine caves.

Tastefully renovated with contemporary but homely furnishings, Maison de Lavande features exposed stone walls and A-framed beams alongside modern facilities and many luxury touches. Relax in the indoor sitting room, chill out in the large garden, or sink into the bubbles of the Jacuzzi.

Guests have a choice of two small group tours – no more than six people – to ensure that everyone receives the same personal service and that guests can get to know each other and share their impressions and experiences of each site.

Six-day tour of the Loire Valley chateaux

tours loire chateaux

Book the Six of the Best tour for a six-day adventure to discover some of the Loire Valley’s most iconic castles and gardens. After settling in to your accommodation at Maison de Lavande, your first night’s dinner is in an atmospheric restaurant in Montreuil-Bellay, listed amongst the elite band of Plus Beaux Detours de France.

Next day you set off by air-conditioned private transport to visit the moated gem of Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, followed by nearby Château d’Ussé, inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. Tour the gardens designed by André Le Nôtre of Vaux-le-Vicomte and Versailles fame and taste a range of Loire Valley vintages.

Ussé and Azay-le-Rideau are both utterly magical, but the chateaux step up somewhat in size and grandeur over the next two days. With its elegant arches spanning the river Cher and its formal gardens designed for Catherine de Médici and Diane de Poitiers – wife and mistress of French King Henri II – the Château de Chenonceau is one of the most visited in the Loire Valley. Next stop is  Amboise with free time to visit the Royal Chateau, last resting place of Leonardo da Vinci, or maybe his final home at the bijou Château de Clos Lucé just a short walk away where many of his inventions are reproduced as working models in the house and shady park.

After an overnight stay in an elegant town house beneath the castle, you will leave Amboise for the Château de Chambord , entertainment palace for Renaissance king François I. Like statistics? Chambord goes into overload with 440 rooms, 282 fireplaces and a chimney for every day of the year! And don’t miss the chance to try out the double-helix staircase thought to have been designed by Da Vinci himself.  One person can go up and another go down at the same time without ever meeting!

From Chambord with its vast park and hunting forest, you’ll drive to the Château de Cheverny, home to a famous pack of hunting dogs and the inspiration for Belgian cartoonist Hergé for the Chateau de Mounlinsart in the series of books about boy detective Tintin.

After overnighting again back at Maison de Lavande, your last full day starts in the medieval town of Chinon below the walls of the medieval fortress, a favourite home of Plantagenet King Henry II and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine. After lunch in a bistro, you will make the short drive to Château de Villandry famed for its outstanding formal gardens. Never thought of planting vegetables amongst your flowers and topiary? You’ll think again after wandering the paths of this horticultural haven.

9-day tour of the Loire Valley Chateaux

Chateau Rivau, Loire Valley

If you have more time to spare, book instead on to Seventh Heaven , a 9-day tour that offers additions to the 6-day itinerary. Discover the lesser-known town of Richelieu, founded by Cardinal Richelieu, minister to King Louis XIII and chief villain in Alexandre Dumas’ book, The Three Musketeers . Browse the street market to soak up the colours and aromas of the Loire Valley’s local produce, then head to the medieval Château de Rivau for lunch and a stroll round its 14 individual gardens themed to famous fairy tales such as Tom Thumb and Rapunzel.

Enjoy a free morning in Saumur to visit the hilltop castle, browse the boutiques or maybe take a river cruise. Then discover a range of liqueurs at an artisan distillery and visit a wine domaine producing delicious Crémant de Loire sparkling wine.

You’ll also spend a day visiting three very different but equally enchanting villages – Montsoreau and its antiques market; the flower-fringed streets of Candes-St-Martin both Plus Beaux Villages and Montreuil Bellay with its medieval chateau.

All tours include collection and return to local airports at Tours or Poitiers, or train stations at Chinon, Tours or Saumur, as well as private en-suite accommodation, all breakfasts and a full complement of lunches, dinners or picnics. Tours run from early April to late October and dates can be found on the website, but Graham and Jacqueline endeavour to run similar tours for groups of 2-6 guests at other times on request.

In an area where history oozes from every stone, where the vineyards tell a tale and the wine is divine, and flavour flows from every succulent mouthful, the expertise offered by Loire Valley Chateau Tours will help to satisfy all your senses, making sure you get the very best out of your visit to this enchanting area.

If you're looking for French magnificence, flair, and food, the Loire Valley will far exceed your expectations. The area, located on the important border between northern and southern France and only a short rail or autoroute ride from Paris, was formerly of enormous strategic importance. The splendour of the Loire Valley Castles, also known as Loire Valley Chateaux, is so organic that it has become an integral part of the landscape.

The impact and omnipresent outlines of the legendary castles are spread over a vast region, prompting UNESCO to label a considerable length of the Loire river as a world-historic site. Explore the diverse nature and rich history of Chateaux de la Loire, from the vast, stunning landscapes to a vital part of French history and the Leonardo Da Vinci link.

History of Loire Valley Chateaux

Royal Loire Valley Palace

Following the conclusion of the Hundred Years' War, Charles VII, Louis XI, and his successors chose to spend the majority of their time in the "garden of France" along the banks of the Loire. Tours, Blois, and subsequently Amboise were the chosen seats of the French royal court in the late 15th century.

Many courtiers purchased derelict castles established by the mediaeval Counts of Blois and Anjou and had them rebuilt in the newest Italianate style. Leonardo da Vinci and other Italian painters came to create and decorate these homes.

Francis I returned to the Louvre in Paris in the 16th century. With him went the great architects, but the Loire Valley remained the area where the French nobility chose to spend their time while not in Paris. When Louis XIV erected the Palace of Versailles at the end of the 17th century, he established the Île-de-France as the permanent location for grand royal mansions.

Those who acquired the king's favour and the affluent bourgeoisie proceeded to repair old châteaux or build costly new ones in the Loire Valley as summer houses.

Best Castles at Loire Valley Chateaux

Château de Chambord

Because of its distinctive architectural style, which mixes classical Renaissance architecture with traditional French mediaeval features, Château de Chambord is the largest and most famous Chateau in the Loire Valley.

Legend has it that Leonardo Da Vinci was one of the brains behind the distinctive design of the castle, which was built to be utilised as a hunting lodge. Since its construction in the early 1500s, it has also undergone several architectural changes due to historical events, followed by substantial restoration work in the 19th century.

The design resembles a traditional castle, with corner towers, a keep, and a moat to protect the castle. The French Renaissance architecture and the various artworks housed in the building, however, add to the beauty of the design. Thus, with all of these factors it was chosen as the model for the castle in Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

Famous Amboise Castle over Loire river

The Château D'Amboise , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a magnificent chateau that overlooks the Loire River and Valley. The castle was taken by Charles VII of France in 1434 and has since been the residence of several French kings. The grounds at Chateau D'Amboise are also well-known.

Visitors may visit the castle grounds, wander around the gardens, and learn about the castle's extensive history at Chateau D'Amboise. You'll also see the Chapel of Saint Hubert, which has some spectacular architecture and sculptures, and Leonardo da Vinci's ultimate resting place. The Chateau d'Amboise is a genuinely stunning location that deserves to be seen.

Château Royal de Blois

Château Royal de Blois, located in the town of Blois, was built as a fortified fortification and has served as a palace for numerous monarchs. The chateau is known for its enormous construction, which is divided into four wings and represents four different architectural styles.

The Francis I wing, which has Renaissance architecture and an octagonal staircase, is an excellent example. The Chateau de Blois is a fine arts museum with a collection of over 35,000 paintings by masters such as Ingres and Boucher. You'll also get to attend special exhibitions, behind-the-scenes excursions, Renaissance balls, and much more.

Chateau de Chenonceau at sunset

Château de Chenonceau is an architectural marvel and one of the most popular Loire Valley castles. The castle, which overlooks the Cher River, was built in a blend of late Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles.

The castle has many rooms and hallways, many of which have been lavishly adorned by the influential ladies who had resided there. The castle now draws visitors from all over the world because of its well-preserved interiors and floral embellishments.

Domaine du Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire

Le Domaine du Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire , about 18 kilomètres from Blois, is a storybook castle. It was a multi-tiered, fortress-like castle built around 1000 that Catherine de Medicis purchased in 1550. This chateau's rooms are all furnished with artwork and ancient tapestries.

Several rooms have recently been refurbished to fully allow visitors to appreciate the château. It was founded in the 10th century, but it was destroyed and reconstructed in the 15th century due to historical events. Its most notable feature is the carved design on the outside front of the Domaine du Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire

Chateau Clos Luce

The Château de Clos Lucé is a popular tourist destination near Amboise, and it was also the final three years of Leonardo da Vinci's life. The permanent installations at this chateau allow visitors to learn more about Leonardo da Vinci's life and achievements. There's also a Leonardo's Garden, which has been turned into an open-air museum to display his botany and geological study.

You will be able to visit the 15th-century castle and go through 800 years of history at Chateau Du Clos Luce by visiting this chateau. You may also stroll around the vast planted garden, making visiting the Château du Clos Lucé a must-do when visiting the Loire Valley.

Entrance gate of the Angers castle

Château d'Angers , perched on a crag, overlooks the Maine River and is one of the most popular sites in the medieval town of Angers. The stronghold dates from the 13th century and is surrounded by massive defensive walls and 17 round turrets. The castle was transformed into a piece of art in the 14th century, with panoramic views of the region from the ramparts and a notable tapestry collection, including the Tapestry of the Apocalypse.

The magnificent Château d'Angers is a must-see for anybody visiting the Loire Valley. Enjoy a breathtaking perspective of the Maine river while learning about the French architectural brilliance and superb artisanship.

Château of Azay-le-Rideau

Château d'Azay-le-Rideau, located in the centre of the Loire Valley, is one of the region's most beautiful castles. The old fortification was acquired in 1510 by Francis I's treasurer, Gilles Berthelot, who renovated it into one of France's largest châteaux. Balzac dubbed the castle a "multifaceted diamond set in the River Indre!" because of its splendour.

The castle has changed hands multiple times, with each new owner imprinting their lavish style on the structure. Spend some time examining this 16th-century take on a fantasy house. It is one of the finest examples of early Renaissance architecture in France.

Loire Valley Bike & Canoe Tour

We are a family of three - mom, dad, 10-year-old son, and we had an AMAZING bicycling adventure with Discover France. We loved the self-guided aspect -- all of our needs were well taken care of (bags transported, lodging arranged, routes planned), but we had the freedom to ride at our own pace, with our own diversions, just as a family. The Loire area couldn't be more scenic and charming; the trails were nearly empty even in high tourist season; our lodging was simple but very comfortable with friendly inn keepers and great locations; the routes that DF put together for us were incredible -- small, untraveled by the masses, and beautiful. We are still reliving the trip several weeks later, and we would whole-heartedly recommend Discover France's Loire Valley multi sport trip. (By the way, both son and dad had a blast at the zip line adventure park. I found it a little bit scary, but am glad I tried at least one ropes course up in the trees. It's an experience my son will never forget, and was a great reward for his many kilometers of riding.)

Here are 8 Loire châteaux to visit near Tours. Whether it’s your first visit or not, each of these châteaux has some great surprises in store for you!

The Royal City of Loches

The elegant Royal City of Loches overlooks the town and is one of the Loire châteaux to visit near Tours. Stroll through its narrow streets and alleys. They will take you to the royal residence and the keep. The elegant silhouette of the residence contrasts with the austerity of the keep. Push open the doors to enter into the history of these edifices and their illustrious hosts. It is at the royal residence of Loches that Joan of Arc came to meet King Charles VII to persuade him to go and be crowned in Reims. The king also often stayed at the château, in the company of his mistress, the beautiful Agnès Sorel. His tomb, adorned with an alabaster recumbent, lies in the nearby collegiate church of Saint-Ours. Anne of Brittany, twice Queen of France, spent long periods of time in Loches. The flamboyant Gothic oratory was built upon her request, and decorated with her emblem: the ermine. Just a few steps from the royal residence of Loches stands the imposing keep. It was built around the year 1000 by Foulques Nerra, and stands at 37 metres high. It was used as a royal prison from the 15th to 18th centuries and held many prisoners. The most famous of these was the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, who was held there for four years. His rank nevertheless allowed him to benefit from special conditions of detention. He was incarcerated in a private, heated cell. As well as being allowed out of his cell, he was also given the equipment he needed to pursue his passion: painting. The drawings he made on the walls have been restored, and there is even a sentence in his handwriting. The graffiti room also bears witness to the passage of many other anonymous prisoners. For an even more interactive and immersive visit, choose the Histopad® tour, which will take you to the heart of the history of the Royal City of Loches (Histopad included in the price of the ticket; if entering on a free ticket, tablet only: €5).

The Château of Chenonceau

Among the Loire châteaux to visit near Tours, the Château of Chenonceau , set in its own gardens, is a jewel of the Renaissance. Its famous gallery gracefully spans the waters of the Cher, giving it a silhouette like no other. The château was built, managed and saved by women, and is also known as the “Château des Dames” in honour of those who watched over it. Among them was Diane de Poitiers, a mistress of King Henry II, who had the bridge built over the Cher. When the king died, his wife Catherine de Médicis forced Diane to leave the château. Echoing the Ponte Vecchio in her native Florence, the Queen had the famous two-level gallery built on the bridge. The Château de Chenonceau cultivates the art of refinement. Furniture, tapestries and paintings by great masters make up a remarkable collection. But the Château des Dames also continues the tradition of floral decoration. Chenonceau is the only château in France to have its own floral workshop and is always adorned with splendid bouquets and floral creations. As the seasons go by, spring bouquets, arrangements of peonies, baskets of dahlias and, at the end of the year, magical Christmas arrangements, are created and produced by the florists, one of whom is a Meilleur Ouvrier de France. Next to the château, the gardens of Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Médicis demonstrate the French tradition of garden design. The Flower Garden is where the countless varieties used in the floral workshop are grown.

  • Every year, take advantage of the magnificent display of flowers at the Château of Chenonceau . Stroll through the gardens of the great ladies of Chenonceau: Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de’ Medici. You will discover geometrically shaped shrubs and hundreds of rosebushes and hibiscus. Not to forget the brilliantly coloured flowers in the Flower Gardens, used by the floral workshop to compose the bouquets that adorn the different rooms of the château throughout the seasons.
  • Take on the labyrinth and make your way to the gazebo at its centre. Then it’s up to you to find your way out!
  • Tours, tastings and floral displays liven up the calendar at the Château of Chenonceau .

The Château of Le Rivau

The Château of Le Rivau is surrounded by 15 enchanting gardens and looks like something out of a fairytale. A few kilometres from Chinon, Le Rivau harmoniously blends art, heritage, gardens and wonder! Another Loire château to visit near Tours. With its high towers, drawbridge and surrounding moat, the Château of Le Rivau proudly displays its medieval architecture. In the château’s spacious rooms, works by contemporary artists feature alongside fine Gothic and Renaissance furniture. At the entrance to the courtyard, the Renaissance stables are among the oldest in France. It was here that horses destined for the kings of France were bred. Joan of Arc came here to fetch some horses before the Battle of Orléans. Inside, the ancient walls display audiovisual projections that pay tribute to equestrian art and to mythical and legendary horses. Monumental sculptures have been installed in the gardens of the Château of Le Rivau . Two huge wellington boots, a gigantic watering can, a giant mole emerging from the earth in the Gargantua Kitchen Garden… These contemporary artistic creations are installed throughout the gardens. The Little Thumbling Garden, the Love Potion Garden, the Enchanted Forest Garden, the Orchard of Paradise… these 15 gardens will take you on a wonderful journey. Roses take pride of place at the Château of Le Rivau . This collection brings together 450 varieties of roses selected for their fragrance. Their delicate scent perfumes the gardens. The Pilgrim, with its scents of tea and myrrh, has saffron-coloured petals, while Lady Emma Hamilton, with its beautiful orange-mandarin-coloured petals, has fruit salad scents. As for Château du Rivau, designed by the famous rose gardener André Eve, it spreads its pretty vines out covered in white roses with golden stamens and smells of green apples.

The Château of Clos-Lucé

This is another of the Loire châteaux to visit near Tours. In the heart of Amboise, the Château of Clos Lucé was once the home of Leonardo da Vinci. The Italian genius was invited to France by Francis I and settled in this elegant pink-brick château in 1516. From its apartments to its restored workshops, the visit to the Château of Clos Lucé takes you into the world of the greatest genius of the Renaissance. You will see the spacious room where he received his guests, the kitchen where he savoured the healthy vegetarian dishes prepared by his servant Mathurine, and his bedroom with a view of the Royal Château of Amboise; they all hold the memory of the Master. On the ground floor of the château, models and 3D animations give an insight into the scope of Leonardo da Vinci’s research. His workshops have been faithfully recreated to explain what a typical day was like for Leonardo da Vinci. From morning until night, the Master would set himself up to work on his projects and studies. Drawings, the artist’s tools, his pigment table and a library full of facsimiles and old books all bear witness to the studious atmosphere in which you can almost see him working. Outside the Château of Clos Lucé , the Leonardo da Vinci Park also evokes the Master’s inventions. The aerial screw, the swing bridge, the tank and the squirrel wheel are all based on sketches by Leonardo da Vinci. These giant machines are made using the materials of the time, and you can operate them yourself! Alongside them, some forty immense translucent canvases are displayed: portraits, views, drawings of botany, anatomy or civil and military engineering take you a little further into the Master’s various studies. In the park, discover the cultural and museum area “Leonardo da Vinci, Painter and Architect”. Open since 2021, the 500 m² exhibition space showcases the two major facets of Leonardo da Vinci’s work: Leonardo da Vinci the painter and Leonardo da Vinci and architecture.

The Royal Château of Amboise

One of the essential Loire châteaux to visit near Tours: home to the kings of France during the Renaissance, the Royal Château of Amboise towers high above the Loire. From the top of its terraces, it offers an exceptional panoramic view of the river. The Royal Château of Amboise was the residence of the Kings of France in the 15th and 16th centuries. It was also where the royal children grew up. Charles VIII was born in the château and brought back the first influences of the Renaissance from Italy. During his reign, Francis I, who spent his childhood there, embellished the château, where he often stayed. Winner of the Italian campaigns and a great patron and lover of art, he surrounded himself with many artists. Among them was Leonardo da Vinci, whom he invited to France and hosted at the Château of Clos Lucé, just a stone’s throw from the Royal Château. A range of options are available for exploring the Royal Château of Amboise . Take an immersive tour using the Histopad, a guided tour, a self-guided tour or a family tour. You will have the chance to explore the monument, from the royal apartments to the Great Council chamber. One of these tours will take you from the underground spaces to the top of the Tour Cavalière des Minimes. The ramp on this tower allowed horses and carriages to reach the top. From its vast terrace, it offers uninterrupted views of the river. In the grounds, the Saint-Hubert chapel houses the tomb of Leonardo da Vinci, who died at the Château of Clos Lucé on 2 May 1519. At the foot of the château, the Naples Garden evokes the Italian origins of the first garden created by Dom Pacello de Mercogliano. This Neapolitan monk and gardener was commissioned by Charles VIII to landscape the grounds of the Royal Château of Amboise at the end of the 15th century. Today, with its terracotta pots bordering vast flowerbeds, this garden whisks visitors away to an Italian atmosphere reminiscent of Medici villas. Want to discover the Royal Château of Amboise on an immersive visit? It can be done! With a Histopad® in hand, you move around buildings that have now disappeared. Find out how the royal residence was refurbished. You will see masterpieces, now on display in museums around the world, back where they belong. And you’ll meet some amazing people, including the kings who made French history and the life of the château!

The Royal Fortress of Chinon

From the top of the rocky spur on which it stands, the Royal Fortress of Chinon overlooks the Vienne. Behind its long ramparts, this ancient fortress has many stories to tell. The Royal Fortress of Chinon is made up of three main châteaux: the Fort Saint-Georges, the Château of Milieu and the Fort du Coudray, and is surrounded by ramparts behind which it hosted many guests. Henry Plantagenet, King of England and husband of Eleanor of Aquitaine, died in the fortress in 1189. A few years later, the Grand Master of the Knights Templar, Jacques de Molay, was imprisoned there along with three other high dignitaries. The walls of the Coudray tower still bear the trace of graffiti engraved in the stone. In 1429, during the Hundred Years’ War, Joan of Arc came to Chinon to meet Charles VII. You will be able to see the bedroom of Henry Plantagenet and Eleanor of Aquitaine. It is a meticulous reconstruction featuring royal seats, chests, a table and a royal bed covered in wild silk, faux fur and a 12th-century fabric preserved in the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Chinon. It may be a thousand years old, but the Royal Fortress of Chinon offers you a visit at the cutting edge of technology! With a Histopad®, take a step back in time and immerse yourself in the fortress and its history. 360° 3D reconstructions will show you rooms that have since been transformed or have disappeared. Mangonels, catapults, cannons… you will be handling war machines. Take a virtual tour of the underground galleries of the Fort du Coudray. A fun tour for the whole family. Included in the château entrance fee, at no extra charge. €5 for those entitled to free entry to the site.

The Château and gardens of Villandry

Near Tours, the Château of Villandry is the last of the great châteaux built on the banks of the Loire. At its foot, its emblematic terraced gardens reveal the art of Renaissance gardens. Take a walk in the fresh air through these colourful verdant spaces! The elegant silhouette of the Château of Villandry was built by Jean Le Breton, Minister of Finance under Francis I. A few centuries later, Joachim Carvallo, great-grandfather of the current owner, bought the château. With his wife Ann Coleman, he undertook an impressive project to restore the splendid French Renaissance gardens. Among them, the Kitchen Garden is undoubtedly the most emblematic of the gardens at the Château of Villandry . Its nine squares of identical size form a colourful palette that changes with the seasons. Flowers and vegetables blend harmoniously, thanks to the work of the château’s team of gardeners. On top of this chequerboard of colours, other gardens await you. At the foot of the château, the Salons in the Ornamental Garden are dedicated to Love and Music. A little further on, surrounded by vast lawns, the water mirror offers a romantic walk. The Sun Garden, on the highest of the terraces, was designed by Joachim Carvallo. Laurent, the head gardener at the Château of Villandry , has been using organic methods for a long time. Chemical insecticides and fungicides have been banned. New insects have now taken up residence in the gardens, and they do a great job of combating pests. Old-fashioned tools such as the grelinette, the poussette and the paroir have also made a comeback. This was an initiative that pleased the birds, who have made the place their own. The Château of Villandry is now part of the LPO (French League for the Protection of Birds) network of bird sanctuaries.

The Château of Azay-le-Rideau

The Château of Azay-le-Rideau was compared by Balzac to “a faceted diamond set by the Indre”. And with good reason: the delicate silhouette of this Renaissance château is reflected in the peaceful mirror of water that surrounds it. It was purchased in the 16th century by Gilles Berthelot, treasurer of King Francis I’s finances, and is a jewel of the Renaissance. A major restoration project has recently restored the château to its former glory. Its delicate decor, tufa stone facades and turrets topped with slate roofs are a delight. During the Renaissance, it was a woman, Philippe Lesbahy, the wife of Gilles Berthelot, who took charge of the work on the Château of Azay-le-Rideau . Upstairs, her bedroom takes you back to the time of the Renaissance. The walls have been lined with woven rushes using Renaissance techniques. This technique retained warmth in rooms that were very difficult to heat at the time. A few centuries later, the art-loving de Biencourt family also took care of the château, which had suffered the torments of the Revolution. The large English-style grounds surrounding the château and its walkways were designed at their request. On the ground floor of the château, the Biencourt Room immerses you in the hushed atmosphere and savoir-vivre of the 19th century.

  • Fun family visits: during the school holidays, the Château of Azay-le-Rideau offers a wide range of activities for young and old. Have fun discovering the Château of Azay-le-Rideau and its history as a family!
  • Take a break at Le Lavoir, the château’s restaurant/tearoom. After strolling through the grounds and gardens, take a seat on the terrace for a while. You can enjoy refreshments or a meal made from fresh, local, seasonal produce.

13 best chateaux of the loire valley to visit in france [2024].

“Ah, the Loire Valley…”

This is how you’ll start any story about your travels here… I know this from experience.

There’s an endless number of impressive fairy-tale like chateaux of the Loire Valley.

In fact, this fertile region is home to some of the best castles in Europe!

You won’t believe that such places actually exist outside the world of Disney, but they are real and so are the magnificent gardens that surround them.

It’s easy to enter such historic places and romanticise them.

However, they weren’t just places of love, partying and wealth.

The Renaissance stone walls also housed adultery, murder, treason and questionable hygiene.

It’s important to remember this as otherwise, it’s easy to just see these sights as the real-life locations of our fairy tales and daydreams.

So wear those outfits you thought were ‘too much’ for city life, pack a large sun hat, and get ready to explore the 13 best châteaux of the Loire Valley!

1. Château de Chambord

view-of-château-de-chambord-through-bushes-chateaux-of-the-loire-valley

Address: Château, 41250 Chambord

Phone number: +33 2 54 50 40 00

This is where you can live your fairytale dream, wearing that vintage dress.

Château of Chambord is easily the most spectacular chateaux of the Loire Valley.

Built by Francois I when he was only 25, it exhibits the wealth of the French monarchy and its unprecedented power.

The façade itself is 156 metres high with 282 chimneys that can’t be seen anywhere else.

This symmetrical castle of French Renaissance style was built in 1519 and is now protected by UNESCO.

There’s a good reason it’s crowned one of the most stunning chateaux of the Loire Valley.

And if the photo above doesn’t make that obvious, your first glimpse of it will.

There’s an expansive tapestry collection here that you can use as a reason to take a tour of the interiors.

If the rooms look empty to you it’s because they were always this way.

The court would move often and needed very little when in a paradise like this one.

Look out for the window in Francois’ room where you’ll find engraved ‘Women are fickle; very stupid is he who trusts them.’.

His adulterous endeavours must have not been as successful as he would have liked, hey?

The park surrounding the grounds is filled with wild boars, deer, bats, and other wildlife that you can meet on the walking trails.

At 13,000 acres, it’s bigger than central Paris!

Oh, this isn’t enough for you? How about a carriage that can take you around the park then?

Do not miss this château – if you can only visit one this is it.

2. Château de Sully-sur-Loire

château-de-sully-sur-loire-on-water-on-sunny-day

Address: Chemin de la Salle Verte, 45600 Sully-sur-Loire

Phone number: +33 2 38 36 36 86

This medieval fortress was built in 1395 and offers an earlier take on Renaissance architecture.

With two floors to explore and multiple towers, a short visit here will give you a taste of what the chateaux of the Loire Valley have to offer.

Set right on the Loire, the château is the perfect setting for a relaxing walk

. Have your camera at the ready so you can make the most of the photo opportunity of the high towers in the water reflection!

You’ll find art, sculpture and tapestries inside in rooms that have gone through constant renovation since the château’s construction.

Don’t miss the tour here as it will make you appreciate even the smallest details of a room that would otherwise be missed.

I recommend taking a tour of each of the Loire châteaux as each houses its own little piece of history.

There’s a wonderful music festival that takes place here so check the website before you plan your visit to see if you’re in luck.

3. Château de Cheverny

château-de-cheverny-with-green-lawn-on-sunny-day-chateaux-of-the-loire-valley

Address: 41700 Cheverny

Phone number: +33 2 54 79 96 29

This classical style château is symmetrical and simple but is considered one of the best-furnished chateaux of the Loire Valley.

This makes it the perfect place to learn about the history of French furniture. Look out for the chairs, bookcases and exquisite walls!

From the golden decoration on the ceiling to the matching wallpaper and curtains, this slightly smaller château really knows how to present itself.

As it has remained in the hands of the same family for six centuries, no work has been done to restore or modify it.

Everything you see is the original design, from the ceilings to the façade.

You’ll notice an exhibit of The Adventures of Tintin here, so don’t be confused!

Herge, the cartoonist of Tintin, was inspired heavily by this château, so if you’re also a budding artist bring a notepad and paper!

4. Château de Chaumont

bridge-leading-to-château-de-chaumont-on-sunny-day-chateaux-of-the-loire-valley

Address: 41150 Chaumont-sur-Loire

Phone number: +33 2 54 20 99 22

Not to be confused with the one we discussed above, Château de Chaumont is one of the oldest chateaux of the Loire Valley.

It was built in 933 but it may look more contemporary to you, especially if you’ve visited a few châteaux before this one.

This is because it was burned to the ground by Louis Xl and rebuilt in the 15th century.

For years it belonged to the Princesse de Broglie who was orphaned at fourteen and inherited the fortune to allow for her lavished parties and high standards.

Her vision was so clear, that she even relocated nearby houses and churches as they didn’t fit her garden plan. Female power at its height!

The château was decorated in the Renaissance style with heavy influence taken from the sculpture.

Take a tour here and learn more about the medallions crafted by none other than Jean-Baptise Nini!

The grounds are also gorgeous to explore in the summer with chestnut trees and flower displays.

There’s even a notable International Garden Festival that takes place here each year.

5. Château de Chenonceau

château-de-chenonceau-on-water-on-sunny-day-chateaux-of-the-loire-valley

Address: 37150 Chenonceaux

Phone number: +33 820 20 90 90

Château de Chenonceau is my favourite of all the châteaux of the Loire Valley, mostly thanks to its surreal floating garden and Cindarella feel.

The tasteful mixture of Gothic and Renaissance architecture towers over the Cher River which is worth seeing from a distance as well as from closer-up.

The Diane de Poitiers garden is a floating parterre which is a significant design feature of the Renaissance, and best seen here.

Expect geometric design and unbelievable symmetry that take you through interconnected paths. Perfect for a daydream stroll!

The other garden, that of Catherine de Medicis, is also on a platform that integrates lavender, roses and the magnificent west facade of the chateau.

Romance and class also inhabit this château, even if lavished balls are no longer held here.

The flower garden covers more than a hectare.

Here you’ll find hundreds of different examples of gorgeous flowers which are all used in the flower arrangements of the château.

These include a collection of more than 400 roses!

If this wasn’t enough to persuade you to visit this magical place, how about the fact it’s a symbol of female power?

The succession of women who built, protected, and restored the château make it truly unique and dreamlike.

You’ll feel the feminine touch of this place from the start of your visit and see the signs of women’s power in its masterpieces.

6. Château d’Amboise

side-of-château-d’amboise-at-sunset

Address: Montée de l’Emir Abd el Kader, 37400 Amboise

Phone number: +33 2 47 57 00 98

A UNESCO site and French historic monument, Château d’Amboise has been visited by many royal and important historical figures including Leonardo Da Vinci whose tomb is preserved there.

Must be worth it then, right? It certainly is, trust me.

Aside from the abundance of Gothic carvings decorating the interior, it’s the balconies that are worth a long viewing here.

Stand on the balcony and breathe. It’s an experience that will stay with you forever.

The Loire views are some of the most spectacular here, so if you have the chance, cross the river to see Amboise reflecting in the water.

Bring a picnic and enjoy it here while soaking up the view!

There’s a guided tour I can recommend and also a behind the scenes tour available that takes you to some of the otherwise restricted areas.

However, this is a little pricier so consider well.

7. Château de Villandry

gardens-of-château-de-villandry

Address: 3 Rue Principale, 37510 Villandry

Phone number: +33 2 47 50 02 09

Situated on the banks of the Loire, this country house might seem humbler than some of the other royal gems.

But don’t be mistaken because the gardens here really are unmatched.

Wander here for hours in the French summer sun to enjoy the ornamental garden, moat garden, kitchen garden, pavilion harden… I could go on, but I’ll leave some for you to discover too.

Their geometric arrangement is typical of the French style and looks like a puzzle when seen from the château window.

The difference to typical English gardens is that ours are wild and left to nature as a design choice. Not here though!

The French believe something as beautiful as a garden has to be ruled over, ordered and designed down to the last detail.

An exciting part of the estate is the organic garden where you can learn about natural growing methods that don’t use pesticides and try to keep the soil healthy.

Although you visit this chateau for its gardens, make sure you also check out the interior with its multiple salons and walls decorated in art.

8. Château de Chinon

view-of-château-de-chinon-across-river

Address: 2 Rue du Château, 37500 Chinon

Phone number: +33 2 47 93 13 45

This medieval fortress is striking at first glance and unlike anything along the River Vienne.

Under UNESCO’s protection, it has been well preserved to also include an array of artefacts like knights’ armour and shields.

Perfect to get you into the medieval mood!

The newly restored Royal Quarters also house multiple exhibits throughout the year.

One transports you back in time with a 3D model reconstruction, scale models and archaeological collections from the grounds.

The other is dedicated to Joan of Arc who visited the fortress.

Here you’ll find original artefacts like bronze statues and pottery from the 18th-20th century.

If all the above sounds like too much history for you to digest, don’t fret!

They also offer an interactive, 360-degree iPad tour.

You can see through walls, watch archers prepare for battle, and interact with the space in a fun and educational way.

For a more tangible experience visit the myths and legends room for a live performance of Chinon’s history. (However, this is an extra fee to consider.)

Bottom line is that this narrow towering medieval fortress (400m high!) is steeped in history, but also makes for an exciting immersive experience.

To prove this further I’ll leave you with these two words: Escape Room.

9. Château de Blois

view-over-château-de-blois-and-buildings-in-city

Address: 6 Place du Château, 41000 Blois

After exploring multiple locations amid expansive fields of green, this château is a welcome break as it’s right in the middle of the city of Blois.

Many additions to the 1608 original make it a very curious place for any budding historians or architects.

The interesting part about the exterior is that it displays four different architectural styles from the 14th to the 17th century.

Each marks the rule of each new king and queen who resided here.

The castle was designated a historic monument in France and from the moment you enter the chateau you’ll understand why.

An extravagant collection of art has accumulated over the years, thanks to the seven kings and ten queens who lived here.

You’ll find more than 35,000 artworks here including heavy tapestries and a hall dedicated to Gothic sculpture.

Even if in the middle of a city, you’ll still find a rose garden just outside the grounds.

You can also visit Saint Nicolas’ Church in Blois which is an emblem of the medieval time when Romanesque art slowly gave way to the Gothic style.

If you’re chasing a view (considering you’ve feasted your eyes on the château itself) climb the highest tower to enjoy views of the Loire River.

Even just this climb will feel like you’re in a Disney film.

I highly recommend visiting between April and September to attend the Sound & Light show which lights up and explores the history of the grounds.

10. Château de Valençay

pink-flowers-in-front-of-château-de-valençay

Address: 2 Rue de Blois, 36600 Valençay

Phone number: +33 2 54 00 10 66

This chateaux exhibits architecture from over three centuries and combines those styles in a beautifully harmonious way.

From the stonework to the chandelles, a visit to Valencay is a visit to one of the most elegant chateaux of the Loire Valley.

The d’Estampes family is responsible for the lavished inside and expansive gardens here.

As a way to show their wealth, you’ll find every piece of furniture and carpet hold significant cultural and financial weight.

You’ll also find pieces from all over the world that they collected during their travels.

The cellar here is worth a visit as it has tried to introduce more modern styles that you’ll be able to recognise if you’ve visited a few chateaux of the Loire Valley already.

The gardens and courtyard have been beautifully designed and are lovely in the summer months.

But there are other more impressive garden displays along the Loire you can enjoy.

Still, the park covers 53 hectares and is designed in the First French Empire style which is why it feels different.

This is a great one to visit if you want to experience the elegance and tasteful architecture non-royal money can buy!

11. Château d’Azay-le-Rideau

château-d’azay-le-rideau-on-water-on-sunny-day

Address: Rue de Pineau, 37190 Azay-le-Rideau

Phone number: +33 2 47 45 42 04

There are two châteaux at Château d’Azay-le-Rideau , the one in the Indre river and the one above it.

The whole structure magically ascends from the water and seems like something from a storybook.

Surely, such a place doesn’t actually exist?

Blending French architectural style with the Italian art of the time, the facade is really unique.

In fact, it actually exhibits the Renaissance style in one of the most majestic ways along the Loire.

The inside is just as fascinating to explore, especially as it has just undergone a mass restoration of which you can find out more on the tour.

Take a stroll along the eight-hectare park and glimpse d’Azay-le-Rideau from afar to really appreciate its structure.

It really is dreamlike and a very romantic place to visit in the French summer.

12. Château de Brézé

courtyard-of-château-de-brézé-on-sunny-day

Address: Bellevigne-les-Chateaux, 20 Rue de l’Amiral Maillé Brézé, 49260

Phone number: +33 2 41 51 60 15

It took from the 11th century to the 19th to build this castle.

However, this won’t come as a surprise once you’ve seen the mixture of medieval and Renaissance style architecture on display.

The most intriguing part of this castle is the underground fortress and web of tunnels that take you through the turbulent history of this and many other châteaux of the Loire Valley.

It wasn’t all parties and extravagance during this time!

The dry moats here are also among the deepest in Europe.

Not only that, but the 16th-century wine presses here are still functional and the largest in the west of France.

To finish up the facts about Brézé, it also houses the largest underground bakery!

Now, how’s that for a list of reasons to visit?

You have the opportunity to see the draw bridge and underground tunnels on the great tours they run here.

You’ll also get to spend some time above ground exploring the long halls and creaking floorboards.

13. Château de Loches

view-of-château-de-loches-over-houses-at-sunset

Address: 5 Place Charles VII, 37600 Loches

Phone number: +33 2 47 19 18 08

Château de Loches, or the Royal City of Loches, is one of the most impressive examples of French military architecture you can see.

The moment you see the sheer magnitude of the structure you can’t help but feel its history and be transported back in time.

The building of this monument began in 1000AD when the 36-meter high keep was built. And it’s only expanded since then!

Its history covers periods of imprisonment, battles, marriages, and the residency of kings that you can find out more about when you visit.

Left behind from its time as a prison, there’s a whole section where you can see prison art left behind from those locked behind its stones.

It’s quite haunting to experience but the frescos on the walls left by the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, are fascinating to experience.

There are also gardens, wine-tasting and other seasonal activities to explore here so make sure you dedicate a whole day.

So there you have it: the 13 best chateaux of the Loire Valley that you need to visit.

Top 10 Chateaux in the Loire Valley

The Loire Valley châteaux (castles) make this central region one of the most popular destinations in France for visitor s, and with good reason. Just two hours from Paris, the mighty river flows slowly through a gorgeous landscape where medieval fortresses and Renaissance palaces are strung out like jewels along the banks. During the Renaissance, François I made Amboise his capital and it became the aristocratic, artistic and intellectual heart of France. Chambord, the biggest of all the châteax in the Loire Valley, was built by François I as a hunting lodge only. Today the whole valley is on the UNESCO World Heritage List , along with the Statue of Liberty in New York, the Great Wall of China, and many of the world’s most important places.

It's easy to get to many of the châteaux by train from Paris , and a bus runs between several around Blois . Or base yourself in Blois or Tours in the western end and take side trips to other châteaux along the river by public transport. If you have a car, so much the better. Take time to château-hop your way along the Loire, it’s well worth it.

Tickets and Passes

Many of the châteaux have teamed up with neighboring properties to offer deals on visiting. Check with the local tourist office when you visit the first château on your itinerary or ask at the ticket office for information.

See a Google Map of the locations of these top ten chateaux in the Loire Valley.

Château of Sully-sur-Loire

Sully, at the eastern end of the Loire Valley, is not one of the blockbuster châteaux, but it’s one of my favorites. Standing in a moat that reflects the white stone building, the original 14th-century medieval fortress still has its massive round towers with pepper-pot rooves. The château was built by the architect of the Louvre and Vincennes, then bought by Maximilien de Bethune (1560-1641) who became Duc de Sully in 1602. The splendid building that he restored and expanded stayed in the family until 1962. It's had its fair share of intrigue, sheltering royalty in 1652 during the Fronde (France’s civil war) and later the writer Voltaire who had seriously fallen out with the royal family. Voltaire also sheltered in the house of his lover, Emilie du Châtelet, in Champagne.

You see the grand apartments of the Duc de Sully, the tomb room where the bones of the Duke and his wife rest, the huge staircase, the King’s bedchamber in Louis XIV style and other rooms with tapestries, ornate ceilings, fireplaces, and paintings.

How to Get There

There is a regional bus from Orleans , the city of  Jeanne d'Arc .

Château of Chambord

Chambord is the big daddy of them all, with around 7,300,551 visitors a year making it the biggest attraction in the region. So if you want to see it without hordes of other visitors, try to go off-season. Chambord is a must-see, rivaling  Versailles in all its wonderful grandeur.

In the heart of the forest and reflected in the surrounding waters, Chambord was born of the dreams of François 1 who returned from his warring campaigns with an abiding love of Italian architecture – and Leonardo da Vinci. Chambord is a wonder of symmetry with a perfect Renaissance façade framed with fairytale towers. It’s not known if Leonardo had anything to do with the plans, but marvel at the double spiral staircase, designed so one person can climb up while another descends without ever meeting, and it seems likely. Construction started in 1519 and was completed some 20 years later. It was never lived in; François I stayed here during the hunting season (Chambord was, after all, merely a hunting lodge) as did various kings after him including the Sun King, Louis XIV.

Climb the staircase to some glorious rooms furnished in period style. A film shows the various stages of construction, so you can follow its history. The terraces give you a glimpse at the structure of chimneys, staircases, the lanterns in the roof and of course, a fabulous view over the hunting grounds and park.

Place St-Louis Chambord Loir-et-Cher (41)

Take the train from Paris to Blois , then a special bus that goes between various chateaux.

Château of Blois

Standing high above the town of Blois, the extraordinary château was built over the centuries so you walk through different architectural gems. Beautifully furnished inside, it has plenty to keep the family happy. If you're there in the evening, don’t miss the son-et-lumiere in the courtyard telling the intriguing, and sometimes bloody, history of the castle.

Château of Cheverny

Cheverny, unusually for one of the Loire’s great châteaux, is still in the same family that built it in 1634. So it has a more dynamic feel than you get at the other great monuments. The owner’s hunting dogs are kept on the estate, so if you’re lucky you might see the pack setting out for a day’s hunt, complete with green-coated riders trotting behind.

Cheverny is gloriously symmetrical with a central façade flanked by square pavilions. Walk up the main wide stone staircase and you enter a decorated world of elegance and luxury. Tapestries on the walls; painted wooden ceilings; ornate gilded fireplaces, Old Master paintings, portraits, over-stuffed chairs, ornate cabinets by Boulle so beloved by Louis XIV, half tester and four-poster beds covered in red and gold silk, and armor on the walls - all of which gives the château a lived-in feeling, though of the grandest kind.

The park stretches out into the distance to a canal, and at the back of the château you’ll find some serious gardens, including a potager (kitchen garden), formal walks and the ornamental pleasure garden.

Many people come to the château for the Tintin exhibition. Cheverny was the model for Herge’s Moulinsart , so you might recognize the facade of the building from the comic strip. The permanent exhibition is delightful, and follows the events in the books, with plenty of discoveries to be made. It’s perfect for small children.

There’s a good café in the former Orangery.

12 rue du Chene-des-Dames Cheverny

Take the train to Blois from Paris, then take a taxi.

Chaumont-sur-Loire Château

Chaumont in the Loire-et-Cher departement is famous for two things. Firstly, the white stone château that stands high up on a hill overlooking the Loire Valley. It was the scene for intrigues and back-stabbing, particularly in the 1560s when Catherine de Medicis forced her husband’s mistress, Diane de Poitiers, to give her the more desirable Chenonceau in exchange for the more modest Chaumont.

Chaumont's second claim to fame is its annual, summer-long Garden Festival running from April to October. This is a huge international affair with gardens designed by professionals from around the world. It’s a magnet for anybody interested in the subject, and each year provides new inspiration. And the gardens of the château themselves are continually being changed and improved.

Royal Château of Amboise

Rebuilt in 1492 by Charles VIII, the Renaissance design of the royal château of Amboise and the gardens came from the King’s visit to Italy. It was a great favorite of French monarchs, many of whom raised their families here, including the young Mary Stuart, the child Queen of Scotland who had been promised in marriage to the future French King Francis II. With such royal patronage, Amboise became a social and intellectual center, particularly after François I installed Leonardo da Vinci nearby at Clos Luce with a handsome salary. It was also used as a prison: Louis XIV incarcerated his steward Fouquet here.

Once inside the château (now just a quarter left of the once huge palace), you come to the Chapelle de St-Hubert, with the much-visited tomb of Leonardo da Vinci, who died in Amboise in 1519. The terrace gives a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and the Loire. This was the place for spectacular fetes given by Charles VIII. Tapestries cover the walls of the King’s apartments, furnished in grand regal style with Gothic and Renaissance pieces. You also see the huge Salle du Conseil and the Tour des Minimes with a ramp large enough to allow the knights to ride on horseback into the castle. The Mediterranean gardens are wonderful to stroll around; there are also guided tours of the underground passageways (in French).

Quai du General-de-Gaulle Amboise

Amboise is an hour away from Paris by TGV, or 2 hours by car. There’s a regular bus service from the town center and the château is 300 yards away.

Leonardo da Vinci's Château de Clos-Luce

Invited to France by François I, the great Italian genius Leonardo da Vinci spent the last years of his life in Amboise, in the small château of Clos-Lucé right in the town and close to the King’s château. Originally built in the 1470s, the stone-and-brick building was the summer cottage of the monarchs. Leonardo came to life here in 1516 before his death in 1519.

Inside you visit his bedroom, the kitchen, his study, the chapel with its walls covered in frescoes painted by his pupils. There’s a good video of his life which places Leonardo in the context of his time and culture. And there’s also a secret entrance used, according to tradition, by François I when he wanted to visit Leonardo without all the pomp and ceremony usually surrounding the King.

40 of the extraordinary machines he invented, from the first aeroplane to a helicopter have been recreated in the model room, illustrating the Renaissance man’s skills as an engineer. You can also see his designs put into practice in the garden, planted with the flora and fauna he in his art. The park outside has a trail to follow where at various points you can listen to Leonardo’s thoughts on botany, the human body and flight.

This modest building doesn’t match the splendor of the main Loire Valley châteaux, but it is delightfully domestic and you come away knowing a lot more about da Vinci.

Amboise is an hour away from Paris by TGV, or 2 hours by car . There’s a regular bus service from the town center and the château is 300 yards away.

Chenonceau Château

Built across the river Cher, Chenonceaux is an extraordinary building. It's known as the Ladies’ Château, occupied by the Dames de Chenonceau . Originally built by Katherine Briçonnet, its history really began when Henri II purchased it in 1547 for his mistress, Diane de Poitiers. When Henri died in 1559 in a jousting tournament, his wife and arch-rival of Diane, Catherine de Medicis, forced Diane to exchange her beloved Chenonceau for Chaumont. Catherine got to work on the château, in particular building the two-story gallery on the bridge which recalls the bridges in her native Florence.

Catherine bequeathed Chenonceau to her daughter-in-law, Louise de Lorraine, wife of Henry III. After his assassination, Louise retired to the château and took the white costume of mourning, becoming known as the ‘white Queen’ for the rest of her life.

Chenonceau is lovely inside, with Gobelin tapestries and paintings by masters like Poussin and Rubens adorning the room of Five Queens, the apartment of Louis XIV, the grand gallery overlooking the River Cher and the Green Cabinet of Catherine de Medici and the kitchens.

In July and August, the gardens are open at night and beautifully lit up. Wander through at your own pace as Italian classical music replaces the birdsong.

At Christmas, Chenonceau is magical with huge Christmas trees in the gallery overlooking the Cher and tables laid for a banquet in the kitchens.

You can learn more about the Dames de Chenonceau is the Musee de Cire (Wax Museum) just by the château.

There’s a formal restaurant, tea room, and self-service restaurant.

1 rue du Dr. Bretonneau Chenonceaux

For an odd reason, the village is called Chenonceaux, though the chateau is Chenonceau, so don't worry; this is the right place!

Regional trains run from Tours to Chenonceaux. The station is at the base of the castle.

Azay-le-Rideau Château

Built on an island in the River Indre by Gilles Berthelot, a rich financier during the reign of François I, the setting and the pretty towers and turrets of this enchanting castle make this one of the favorite châteaux in the Touraine region.

Inside one of the most extraordinary features is the staircase enclosed in an ornate bay. Staterooms include the rich Royal Chamber, the bedroom of Louis XIII in 1619. 16th and 17th tapestries line the walls, keeping out the winter chill and the collection of furniture is notable. The English-inspired park surrounds the château but was only laid out in 1810 by the Marquis of Biencourt who built lovely water mirrors, paths, and planted cypress, Sequoia, and other trees from Asia.

4 rue du château Azay-le-Rideau

Take the regional train from Paris to Tours. Then either take the train, taking around 30 minutes to Azay-le-Rideau, or the frequent bus service from Tours to Azay-le-Rideau.

Chinon Château

One of the oldest fortified châteaux in France, Chinon was vital in the Middle Ages and at the time of Henry II in the 12th century, was a vast, imposing structure, its huge walls dotted with defensive towers that circled the vast castle and grounds. Chinon stood at the crossroads of Anjou, Poitou, and Touraine and was a vital strategic site.

Today the ruins, which have been partially restored, look over the river. You walk around the ramparts with their great views and see where medieval kings held court. On the foundations of the Fort St-George, a contemporary building houses a museum showing the archeological finds and displays that tell the story of Joan of Arc’s visit here. In 1429 she came to the castle to plead with the Dauphin, later Charles VII, to provide her with an army to fight the French who were besieging Orleans.

The town of Chinon is delightful with medieval houses filling the streets. It has a special place in English history – at no. 44, rue Voltaire, Richard the Lionheart died in 1199 from a wound sustained during the Hundred Years’ War in Limousin.

There is a small tea room.

Pl. Hofeim Chinon

Take the regional train from Paris to Tours. Then either take the train, taking around 45 minutes to Chinon, or the frequent bus service from Tours to Chinon (about 1 hr 15 min).

5 little-known Loire Valley châteaux worth a visit

Inspiration

Reading time: 0 min Published on 28 February 2024, updated on 16 April 2024

If there's one French destination that's a must for history lovers, it's the Centre-Val de Loire region, with its more than 3,000 châteaux. Chateaux such as St. Ambroise, Blois and Chambord have long since fallen out of favor. But there are some lesser-known châteaux that are well worth the detour. So get off the beaten track and discover these gems!

Château d'Azay-le-Ferron: immersed in castle life

On the edge of the Brenne regional nature park, the Château d'Azay-le-Ferron offers a tour of its 15 rooms, so realistically reconstructed that you'd think they were still inhabited. Pass through the dining room, with its 18th-century sideboard and still-life paintings, to the kitchen, via the guards' room featuring hunting trophies brought back from Sudan by Roger Luzache d'Azay in the 19th century. The youngest visitors will be delighted by the mystery animal game they can play in all the rooms.

Château de Montpoupon: discover hunting with hounds

Closer to the Sudan, the de la Motte Saint-Pierre family, owners of Château de Montpoupon , are famous for hunting with hounds on their estate. Discover the Musée du Veneur, 30 rooms dedicated to this practice. Admire the stables, the exhibition of carriages and the saddlery. Finally, don't miss the Hermès room, named after the prestigious house famous for its silk scarves and saddles. A French savoir-faire not to be missed.

Château de Maintenon: a stroll through the French gardens

The reputation of the châteaux of the Centre-Val de Loire region is based not only on their impressive residences, but also on the parks and gardens that surround them. At the Château de Maintenon you will discover a true French garden, created according to the plans of Le Nôtre, the gardener commissioned by King Louis XVI. Stroll among 65 standard roses, 15,000 tulips and a carpet of 2,000 pink impatiens and blue sage. And don't miss the huge unfinished aqueduct that crosses the estate, a perfect illustration of the whims of the kings of yesteryear.

Château de Beauregard: a journey through the history of the kings of France

Paul Ardier, owner of Château de Beauregard , began his historian's dream in 1617: to create a portrait gallery retracing the history of France. Three generations of his family worked together to create this collection of 315 portraits of the people who have marked history through the 15 reigns of the kings of France. The result is the Galerie des Portraits, which since 1992 has been housed in the Jardin des Portraits, 12 gardens reminiscent of the gallery's 12 portrait groups. The perfect way to round off your visit.

Château de Meillant: original tours

If you want to discover castles in a different way, Meillant is the place to go. With the tour " L'autre Meillant ", Aurélia de Mortemart will reveal the details and secrets of her castle life. Or perhaps you'd prefer to dine at the château, play a life-size game of Cluedo with the "Crime au château" activity, or visit the Musée des Miniatures where history is told through doll's houses. Out-of-the-ordinary visits to one of the lesser-known châteaux in the Centre-Val De Loire region, an area to be rediscovered without end!

The castle of Rivau is a magical castle that tells us about the life of these agricultural regions in the Middle Ages. We loved it! Château de Brézé - castle under the castle

In the castle of Brezé, it's what you can't see that is the most interesting! Not that the Italian Renaissance building, built in the 16th century, is repulsive, but the troglodytic network that runs for 4 km in the moat and under the castle is just incredible.
