Recently we went on a tour with Marty. While the tour overall was pretty good, there was a young man with special needs on our tour and Marty referred to him as a "retard" and used the term when talking to the park ranger which was unprofessional. I found it insulting and insensitive. I wouldn't hire him again.

Marty..

What an incredible experience! Marty was our tour guide and was a wealth of information. He was passionate and knowledgeable about the Mesa Verde National Park, the Ancestral Puebloans, the overall history, and the surrounding area. The tour for "Cliff Palace" included many other stops and information, as well as, the cliff dwelling. It was scheduled for 0800 to 1200; Marty and driver Leonard were spot on regarding the timing was perfect. The tour bus was clean, had very comfortable seats and temperature, and they provided ice cold water bottles throughout. Additionally, when we actually went into the cliff dwelling, Marty had to temporarily hand us over to a park ranger. Loreal, the Ranger, wasn't nearly as informative or helpful. This tour is absolutely worth it!!!

Balcony house. This tour is the most adventurous tour the park offers. There is a huge ladder climb so make sure you are feeling up to it. It was well worth it. Our Park Ranger Ben, who lead the tour was great! If you only have time to do one out of the 3 tours this is your one.

My boyfriend and I took the Mesa Verde Highlight Tour with Shane. We really, really enjoyed it. For $70, the tour lasted from 10am to about 5:30pm, and it included transport from Duranog, park entry, lunch, and also a separate ranger-led tour to Balcony House. There was only myself and my boyfriend on the tour (I understand that there was another group that went out earlier for the full day tour), which I really liked. It allowed Shane to improvise and give us the option to make our own schedule. We could choose to do more cliff dwelling tours vs. the older mesa history, or vice versa. I definitely got more out of the park by using Mesa Verde Tours rather than trying to visit the park myself. Also, i found the tour guide more interesting than the ranger-led tour we took at Balcony House.

We toured Cliff Palace with Jacob. He was the BEES KNEES. He's the kind of tour guide that makes you want to spend your entire day learning about anything...he could've told us the history of lint and it would have been wildly intriguing. The dwelling was that much better because of the storytelling abilities of Jacob. Worth it ($5 per tour), especially if you get him or someone of that caliber!!

Photo of Cheval O.

I would not use a tour again. I would drive over there and keep my own pace, eat lunch in air conditioning and leave when I was done. The driver of the van did not tell us anything that was not on the information signs. Because it was hot 90 degrees the trip seemed very long. the tour included sandwich, drink etc and this was eaten under trees outside. Fun if not so hot but what they would have done with worse weather not sure, Eat in van? The resturant has good selection and is comfortable. Given the heat I should have gone early, gotten the ranger talk tickets I wanted and I would have adjusted for the weather, morning tour, not mid afternoon in melting weather. The people picked up last had to contort to get to the last seats in the van. If you have mobility issues this is not the tour for you. If you do not have a car this would be a good option.

Photo of David R.

We did the 700 Year Tour and our tour guide Ruth and bus driver Mike were amazing. The tour was four hours, but it was so much fun and was so informative that it seemed like one hour. I will definitely give myself more time to explore this amazing park next time I visit.

These tour guides are spectacular. Super engaged, inspired and informed. I learned more than I thought I would!

Incredible knowledge of fab guide, Aaron, made for one of the best tours I have ever experienced. Highly recommend!!!!

Your Guide to the Mesa Verde National Park Tours in 2022

Mesa Verde is a U.S. National Park known for its Cliff Dwellings and ancient architecture that goes back years ago. So history and cultures buff will surely appreciate the park, and the best way to do that is to join a tour or two with the park ranger.

Table of Contents

Mesa Verde Self-Guided Tours: Can You Tour Mesa Verde On Your Own?

Mesa verde tours.

  • Cliff Palace
  • Balcony House

How Long Does Each Tour Take?

  • The Cliff Palace tour takes approximately 30 minutes.
  • The Balcony House  tour takes approximately 60 minutes.
  • The Long House tour takes approximately 60 minutes.
  • Driving time . Mesa Verde National Park is huge; believe me, most of your time will be spent driving.
  • You are required to show up 15 mins earlier before each tour to go over the safety information.
  • There may be delays or any unforeseen circumstances during your tour or after.
  • Sometimes, the tour can go longer than anticipated .
  • 2 hours between the time you book this Cliff Palace tour and a Balcony House tour (i.e., 9:00 AM CP and 11:00 PM BH).
  • 3 hours between the time you book this Cliff Palace tour and a Long House tour (i.e., 10:00 AM CP and 1:00 PM or later LH).
  • 4 hours between the time you book this Long House tour and a Cliff Palace tour (i.e., 10:00 AM LH and a 2:00 PM or later CP). This will allow you a little extra time to enjoy the sites at Wetherill Mesa and drive to Cliff Palace.

Mesa Verde Tour Cost

  • General Admission: $8
  • Infant (age 2 and under): $1
  • Cancellation Fee: $1 per ticket

How Difficult Is Each Tour?

It’s not so much about hiking to do each cliff-dwelling tour at Mesa Verde National Park. However, each tour requires climbing up and down to go through a cliff dwelling, and the effort can be anywhere from easy and moderate to difficult , depending on your physical conditions. Therefore, the tour is not for you if you have mobility issues or concerning physical health. So plan accordingly before purchasing any tour tickets.

Best Cliff Dwelling Tours at Mesa Verde

  • The Cliff Palace  tour is the easiest and fastest tour, and it’s also the most popular cliff dwelling picture you see when you google Mesa Verde National Park. You go through the tour listening to the ranger’s narrative and move through the cliff dwelling without touching anything.
  • The Balcony House tour requires a better fitness level and takes an hour to complete. It’s also the hardest tour to get tickets because they only offer 3 tours per day with a limited amount of tickets sold. It is one of the most adventurous tours in the park as you move through the cliff dwelling by claiming tall ladders, squeezing your way through a narrow tunnel, etc. See the photo below. This tour lets you touch the dwelling (but not all) as you move through the site.
  • The Long House  tour also takes an hour and is a little further away to drive to it. It’s the least popular Mesa Verde National Park tour and can also be challenging to move through the cliff dwelling.

How to Book Mesa Verde Tours?

  • First and foremost, ensure the cliff dwelling or road is not closed for the date you will visit the park for your tour.
  • You can view the alerts from the official Mesa Verde National Park website .
  • Go to the Recreative Gov website and create an account if you do not have one.
  • Sit down and figure out what dates and times you want to do the tour and how many tickets you will need. You can see each Mesa tour hours here:
  • All tour reservations can be booked online 14 days in advance at 8 AM Colorado or Mountain Standard Time (MST) . Therefore, 14 days before your desired tour date, set a reminder before 8 AM Colorado time, and get your credit card ready.
  • I suggest you perform a “mock” reservation on a sample date without paying for the reservation to familiarize yourself with the booking process for the tour tickets and quantities you want.
  • Simply go to the Recreation Gov Mesa Verde Tour website to book.
  • Remember that the  Balcony House  tour can be sold out in 2-3 minutes, so be strategic and ready to book in front of your computer if this tour is high on your list.

Best Places to Stay Near Mesa Verde National Park

  • I suggest you stay in Cortez to better use your time because Mesa Verde National Park is huge, and you will spend most of your time driving to the park entrance and each cliff dwelling site from the park entrance.
  • Durango is a more interesting town with more attractions, especially its scenic train ride between Durango and Silverton , but it can be far from Mesa Verde. Lodging is also more expensive.
  • If you want to stay in the National Park, there’s a Far View Lodge  inside the park, and they accept pets for $25 per night.
  • Holiday Inn Express Mesa Verde-Cortez – pets are not allowed.
  • Hampton Inn Mesa Verde/Cortez – pet fee is $50 per stay, up to 2 pets allowed.
  • Best Western Turquoise Inn & Suites – pet fee is $20 per night, up to 2 pets allowed. However, when I called them, they said $20 per stay, so please double-check.
  • Baymont by Wyndham Cortez – pet fee is $15 per stay, up to 2 pets allowed.
  • Also, some more budgeted  Choice Hotels  are available too. Each hotel charges a pet fee per night instead of per stay, which can add up.

Are Dogs Allowed In Mesa Verde National Park?

  • Never leave your pets in the car unattended.
  • Take turns watching your pet and checking out the cliff dwelling overlook if there are two of you. The Cliff Palace overlook, for example, is not far from the parking lot, so one of you can watch your pet while the other snap a quick photo of the Cliff Palace. A few overlooks along the Cliff Palace loop are just a few steps away from the parking space.
  • Take turns doing each Mesa Verde tour by allowing ample time between switching.
  • Walk the Long House Loop with your pets. The loop is 5-mile long, but you don’t have to do it all. The path is well paved, and some archaeological sites, including the Long House overlook, are where you can enjoy the views with your pets.
  • There are also dog kennels near Mesa Verde if you are comfortable.

What people love about mesa verde national park tours.

Overall the tour was very enjoyable. The scenery was beautiful. Though the Vail stop was a disappointment as most shops and eateries closed. Cruise Director was very informative and very knowledgeable of the places. Captain Ron was most helpful getting us on and off the bus. Also a very good driver.
Great trip, great seeing 4 national parks and 2 national monuments, good guide (Dave Showalter), nice hotels, good meals (except hotel free breakfasts).
Great tour encompassing almost 1200 miles over 10 days seeing incredible sites.

“Awesome experience with Greg the guide” Greg made this tour very fun and knowledgeable. His enthusiasm with the history of the Mesa and the ancestral Puebloans was contagious. Greg made this a wonderful experience for our entire family. He took a personal interest and concern for all the guests on the tour. I would highly recommend going on this historical adventure with Greg.

Plan Your Adventure: A Complete Mesa Verde National Park Guide

A thousand years ago, the Four Corners region of the United States was the epicenter of a complex and incredible civilization that flourished for centuries. The Ancestoral Puebloans built complex and elaborate dwellings into the cliffs at places such as Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, and Canyon de Chelly. In this Mesa Verde National Park guide, I am going to provide you with a blueprint of how to explore this incredible park.

Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde is arguably the most famous of all the Ancestral Puebloan sites in the Four Corners region of the American Southwest. The park is renowned for its well-preserved cliff dwellings and other archeological sites. In fact, the infamous Cliff Palace may be one of the most well-preserved and largest Ancestral Puebloan sites still around today.

An All-You-Need Mesa Verde National Park Guide

In my Mesa Verde National Park guide, I will provide you will all of the information that you will need to plan a fun and memorable trip to visit the park. I explain the best way for travelers to get to the park from outside the state or outside the country.

I also outline the best times to visit the park and highlight the top things to see and do while you are there. Finally, I also give you my suggestions on the best things to see and do outside of the park while on your trip. With this information in hand, it will be easy to plan a trip to Mesa Verde that you will remember for a lifetime.

Mesa Verde National Park Navigation Menu

How to get to mesa verde national park.

Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde is located in the Southwest corner of the state of Colorado, just north of the Ute Mountain Reservation. The park is just a short 50 mile drive from the popular Four Corners National Monument, which marks the border of the states of Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico.

If you are flying into the area to see the park from outside the region or the country, the nearest city with a large, international airport is Albuquerque, New Mexico. You will want to book your flight into the Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) .

Mesa Verde National Park Location Map

For those who will be visiting the Mesa Verde National Park from elsewhere in the area, I have also included a map with the park’s location below for you to review. Because of its location close to the borders of Utah and Arizona, the park is also easy to visit from the amazing parklands in Southeastern Utah and Northern Arizona.

For those planning to visit other nearby attractions, I have included a table with the distance and drive time to other popular cities and attractions in the area. As you can see, there is a wealth of incredible things to see and do in the general vicinity of Mesa Verde.

Top Things to See in Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde National Park

There are a lot of incredible archelogical sites to see in Mesa Verde National Park, so I would plan on spending a full day at the park if you want to see it all. Some of the sites are viewable from lookouts that are just off the road, and some sites you need to do a little hiking to see.

The park is essentially divided into three sections, with the Morefield Campground, Far Site Lodge, and several breathtaking overlooks located in the Northern part of the park. From there, the park road splits off to the East and the West, with the Wetherill Mesa to the West and the Chapin Mesa to the East.

Both the eastern and the western sections of the park contiain sites that you can tour on your own, as well as sites that require a paid ticket to tour. If you are starting to put together an itinerary for your visit, I have listed what I think are the top things to see within Mesa Verde for you to review below.

Kodak House

Mesa Verde - Kodak House

This is the furthest site on the Long House Loop of Wetherill Mesa. There is an overlook 2.5 miles from the parking lot in which you can see the Kodak House. The dwellings were named for a camera that was left at the site by Gustaf Nordenskiöld in the 1880’s.

Cliff Palace

Mesa Verde - Cliff Palace

The first site that you will encounter when driving the popular Cliff Palace Loop Road is the Cliff Palace. This is one of the larger sites in Mesa Verde and included 150 rooms and 23 kivas that housed approximately 100 people in its day. To put that into perspective, 75% of the over 600 dwellings that are within the park only had between 1-5 rooms. It is believed that this special site was used for administrative and ceremonial purposes.

Balcony House

Mesa Verde - Balcony House

This medium sized village of 38 rooms and two kivas likely supported a handful of families comprised of up to 30 people. With two naturally occuring springs nearby, the site is in an ideal location. One interesting thing about this site is that it’s alcove faces northeast, which means that it received very little warmth from the sun.

If you are interested, you are able to tour the Balcony House . There is a 32-foot entrance ladder that leads into the cliff dwelling that makes this one of the more fun and adventurous tours in Mesa Verde. The tours run throughout the summer months, so if you are interested in seeing the Balcony House, make sure you keep that in mind.

Mesa Verde - Long House

Located on the Wetherill Mesa in the Western section of Mesa Verde National Park, the Long House site is accessible via a long, winding 12 mile road that follows a fire trail. Be aware that the road is rather steep, so vehicle length is limited to 25 feet or less. If you aren’t comfortable driving the road, there is a two hour, ranger-guided tour of the Long House that you can take.

Montezuma Valley Overlook

Mesa Verde - Montezuma Valley Overlook

There are several amazing valley viewpoints in the park, but this may be my favorite. From this viewpoint, you can see out over the breathtaking Montezuma Valley. It is easy to lose track of time as you enjoy the beautiful views of the area. But don’t lose track of time for too long. There are many other incredible viewpoints for you to enjoy!

Hemenway House Overlook

Mesa Verde - Hemenway House Overlook

The Hemenway House is one of my favorite sites in the park. It looks like it is about to fall off of a small ledge that it is resting on, which makes you wonder how it has survived this long.

Built in the 1200s, the Hemenway House has 26 rooms and a kiva and was named after Mary Tileston Hemenway. She funded the first scientific archeological expedition in the southwest and was instrumental in protecting the Ancenstral Pueblo sites in the region.

For those who would like to visit the Hemenway House, this amazing overlook is open from 8am until sunset between late spring until December 1, or the first significant snowfall.

Park Point Overlook

Mesa Verde - Park Point Overlook

The beautiful Park Point Overlook is the highest elevation point within Mesa Verde. To put into perspective how high of an elevation it is, the Park Point Overlook at 8,572 feet (2,612 meters), is at a higher elevation than Machu Picchu in the Peruvian Andes. Now that is what I would call high.

From the Park Point Overlook, you can see the 14,000 foot peaks of the San Juan Mountains to the North. To the South, you can see the high desert plataue and rocky canyons of New Mexico. It really is one of the most breathtaking viewpoints to see in person.

Mesa Verde Park Point Fire Lookout

However, the overlook isn’t just for sightseers. The historical Park Point Fire Lookout sits at the highest point and is still used today to communicate lightning, severe weather, and fire information to the surrounding areas.

Soda Canyon Overlook

Mesa Verde - Soda Canyon Overlook

For those who are looking to do some hiking while visiting Mesa Verde National Park, one of the trails I would recommend is the Soda Canyon Overlook Trail. It’s a fairly easy, out-and-back trail that brings you through a beautiful pinyon-juniper forest. Along the trail are three overlooks along the edge of Soda Canyon where you will be rewarded with views of the Balcony House and several other cliff dwellings.

This beautiful canyon was named after the white, calcium carbonate deposits that line the canyon wall below the rim. These are the evaporated remains of springs that were onced used by the Ancestral Pueblo people. More amazing history that you will get to see with your own eyes.

Soda Canyon Overlook Trail Map

Square Tower House

Mesa Verde - Square Tower House

I would be remiss if I didn’t include the largest structure in Mesa Verde on my list of the top things to see in the park. That honor goes to the four-story, 27-foot (8 meter) tall Square Tower House. Although what you see has been stabilized some by archeologies, 90% of the structure is original. Inside the house you will find painted murals and rock art that will amaze.

The painted murals and the fact that some of the orginal plastered walls still exist tells us that the original builders of these structures cared about beauty in addition to practicality. They were just as concerned about interior decoration as we are with our homes today.

House of Many Windows

Mesa Verde - House of Many Windows

The final site on my list of the top things to see in Mesa Verde is one of the more underrated sites in the park. The House of Many Windows is a small, but picturesque, cliff dwelling that is perched on a ten-foot-wide ledge inside Cliff Canyon. Despite how it may appear, the many windows that you can see are actually doorways into the site’s rooms that are made of hand-carved sandstone.

Best Times to Visit Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde National Park

Depending on what you plan to do during your visit, certain times of the year may be better than others to visit Mesa Verde National Park. To assist you in your planning, I have included some important weather, visitor, and park closure information for you to review below.

Winter Closures

What many people don’t realize because of its location in Southern Colorado is how high of an elevation Mesa Verde is at. The park sits between 7,000 and 8,500 feet in elevation. Because of its high elevation, the winters at the park are typically cold.

Not only that, but the park gets a healthy amount of snow during winter. Because of this, parts of the park aren’t as accessible or open during the winter months. Before heading to the park during the winter, make sure you check the local weather conditions.

In addition to that, you should be aware that there is no overnight camping or lodging within the park. However, there are hotels and motels in nearby cities that you can stay at. For more information on accomodation options, please see my Where to Stay near Mesa Verde National Park section of this guide.

In addition to accomodations within the park, several of the park roads are closed during the winter months as well. This includes the following:

  • Cliff Palace Loop Road – Closed from December 1 (or first substantial snowfall) until late spring.
  • Long House Loop – Closed from December 1 (or first substantial snowfall) until late spring.

Average Temperature (°F)

If you would like to see the whole park, I would suggest planning your visit between late spring and early autumn, as this is when all of the park’s facilities will be open. Mesa Verde is at a high elevation, so it can get quite cold between the months of November and March.

On the other end of the spectrum, in the summer months of June thru August the daytime temperatures can get quite hot. So, if you plan on doing a lot of hiking in the park, you may want to target the spring and autumn months instead.

Average Precipitation (Inches)

The park doesn’t get a ton of precipitation throughout the year, but what it does get it gets fairly consistently. The driest months of the year are the late spring and early summer. So, if you want to maximize the good weather you’ll have at the park, targeting the months of May and June are a good bet.

Average Snowfall

Because of its high elevation and cold winter temperatures, the park does get snow during the winter. Most of the snowfall that the park does get comes during the period between the months of January and March. Although not all of the park’s facilities are open during the winter, the park is pretty with a fresh layer of snowfall. So, if you don’t mind the cold and snow, it can be beautiful to visit and photograph the site in wintertime.

Average Number of Visitors

Not surprisingly, most of the visitors who come to Mesa Verde tend to visit during the summer months. As I mentioned previously, this is when the weather is the warmest and all of the park’s facilities are open. However, this is also when the park can be the most crowded. If you want to avoid the crowds, but have nice weather, I would suggest visiting in the late spring or early autumn instead.

Other Things to See in the Area

Monument Valley, Utah

In addition to the incredible sites within the park, the Four Corners region and the extended area is home to several other amazing things to see. If you are driving thru the area and are looking for some additional sites to add to your road trip itinerary, I have included some great suggestions for you to review below.

Four Corners National Monument

Four Corners National Monument

One of the closest attractions to Mesa Verde is also one of the most popular attractions in the area. The Four Corners National Monument is the location where the borders of the states of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah meet. The corners of all four states meet at a single point. This makes it possible to jump between all four states in the matter of seconds.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Another amazing place to visit that isn’t too far from Mesa Verde is the Great Sand Dunes National Park. The Park is home to massive sand dunes that rival those in the world’s largest deserts. Not only are they a marvel to look at, but you can rent snowboards to go sandboarding down the massive dunes. It’s definitely a park that should be on every traveler’s list.

Monument Valley

Monument Valley, Utah

One of the most beautiful and famous areas in the American Southwest is the renowned Monument Valley. Located in the border area between Utah and Arizona, this Navajo Tribal land has some of the most spectacular landscape that you will find anywhere in the world. If it looks familiar, it’s probably because the area was used in many old Western movies and newer flicks such as Forest Gump.

Where to Stay Near Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde Far View Lodge

Campgrounds

When visiting the national parks and monuments of the United States, it is a really neat experience to camp out during your visit.  Some of the best campgrounds in America can be found inside the country’s national parks and monuments and the surrounding areas.

This is especially true of the Mesa Verde National Park, which has some great campsites in the area. If you are interested in camping out during your visit, I have included a map of some area campgrounds for you to review in my Mesa Verde National Park guide below.

If camping is not your speed, you need not worry as there are a variety of good hotels for you to choose from in the area as well. The closest hotels and motels are located in the nearby city of Cortez, Colorado. The city is only 10 miles from the park, so it is a very convenient place to stay during your visit.

If the hotels in Cortez don’t meet your needs, there are many more hotels in the nearby city of Durango, Colorado. Durango is roughly 36 miles from the park, so you will have a longer drive to visit the park. However, there are many more hotels and motels in Durango because it is a larger city.

This is where you will find some of the nicer hotels in the Mesa Verde National Park’s general vicinity. For your review, I have included a map and a list of recommended hotels at different price points for you to review in my Mesa Verde National Park guide below.

Is Mesa Verde Worth it Without a Tour? 11 Things to Do

mesa verde tours reviews

While Mesa Verde National Park is a wonderful experience, occasionally ranger-guided tours sell out, the weather forces cancelations, or visitors have limitations and can’t hike. In these cases, people understandably wonder if Mesa Verde is still worth a visit even if they can’t tour the cliff dwellings.

Mesa Verde National Park is still worth a visit, even if you can’t go inside a cliff dwelling. The park has many different activities and amenities that you will enjoy, such as hiking, interpretive exhibits, drive tours, and more.

Here are 11 great ways to enjoy the park besides tours:

(note: All links in this article are to NPS webpages unless I say otherwise)

1. Visit the Museum & Visitor Center

The museum and visitor center at Mesa Verde should be your first stop, whether you are visiting for a few days or a few hours. The visitor center has information on tours, closures, ranger programs, and activities. It also has the usual exhibits and bookstores that you can find in most national parks.

You should also be sure to stop by the Chapin Mesa Museum , which is located some distance from the entrance and visitor center, in the Chapin Mesa area. The museum has exhibits and a film about native American lifestyles, culture, and the artifacts found in the area. You can learn about how the people moved from mesa-top villages to the cave dwellings that the park is famous for. If your kids are doing the junior ranger program, they may spend more time than you expect in the museum, filling information into their booklets. There are also hiking trails behind the museum.

2. Tour the Mesa Top Sites

Before the Puebloan people moved into the cliff alcoves to live, they built villages and farms on the mesa top. The ruins of buildings, irrigation systems, and ceremonial centers remain scattered across the area. You can visit these ruins and learn more about the ancestral Puebloan people by following the Mesa Top Loop . This short 6-mile road allows you to learn about centuries of Ancestral Puebloan history and take short trails to 12 different archeological sites such as pit houses, farming sites, and village ruins. Although this road is short, it can take several hours including all the stops and short hikes. Exactly how long it takes for your family can depend on how much time you spend reading signage and looking at the views.

3. Listen to an Audio Tour

Before you take the Mesa Top Loop, make sure that you have downloaded the audio tour so you can listen along while you drive. This will help keep everyone entertained, as this drive can take several hours if you stop at all the sites. It will also help you to learn more and enjoy the drive. The entire tour is 42 minutes long. (Remember you likely won’t have cell service inside the park, so download the tour before you get there.)

4. View Cliff Dwellings

Even if you cannot tour any cliff dwellings on your visit, you can still see them by stopping at the overlooks available around the park. Some of the best views of cliff dwellings are found along the Mesa Top Loop and the area around the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum. You can also find overlooks along Weatherill Mesa Road. If you want to get in a short hike and see several cliff dwellings, the Soda Canyon Overlook Trail is a good option.

5. Get Your Junior Ranger Badge

While visiting the park, children (and adults!) can participate in the junior ranger program . This popular park program allows children to earn ranger badges for Mesa Verde by completing fun activities in a workbook as they explore and learn about the park. The booklets generally take a couple of hours to complete, and younger children have fewer activities to complete compared with older children and teens. Many children take considerable pride in their collection of Junior Ranger badges, so keep them safe by pinning them to a special vest or display at home.

If your kids want to get a head start on the program, you can print the booklets at home and they can work on them while you’re driving to the park. My kids love when I print the booklets ahead of time. They get to experience more of the park and they know more about it before they go, which makes it more fun and educational.

6. Watch for Wildlife

Mesa Verde, like most national parks, is a haven for wildlife. While you are visiting the park, keep your eyes out for the animals that live there, including many different birds, mule deer, coyotes, lizards, and squirrels. The park is also home to feral horses that live wild among the native animals.

Many children enjoy watching wildlife, especially if they have learned about the park’s animals ahead of their visit. Keeping a checklist of the wildlife you see can be a fun activity and can help encourage children to keep watching carefully to spot more animals.

7. Visit Step House

Step House is a cliff dwelling that can be toured without a guide or tickets. This is perhaps the best way to see inside a cliff dwelling if tours are sold out or unavailable. You can get to Step House by hiking down a steep one-mile trail and once you arrive you can look around at your own leisure. Expect to see a ranger on duty to protect the artifacts and buildings. This is a good time to ask any questions you have about the park and Step House.

Step House is located in the Weatherill area of the park which is a good distance from the area where the museum and visitor center are. If you have sufficient time, you can plan several things to do in the Weatherill Mesa area or dedicate one day to visiting this side of the park.

8. Take a Hike

Mesa Verde National Park is large, and much of the area is backcountry wilderness. However, even the parts of the park that don’t contain archeological sites are interesting. The park has dozens of trails that can be hiked, many of which are short and easy enough for children. A hike will allow you to enjoy the beautiful, mild weather and dry desert scenery of southwest Colorado. Many hikes will take you to interesting vantage points such as overviews of cliff dwellings, views of the valley, or petroglyphs.

If you haven’t tried it, I recommend using the AllTrails app to help you plan and locate great hikes. Here’s a link to the online version of the app .

9. Eat at a Restaurant

Enjoy a meal in the park at one of the cafes or the fine dining restaurant. Several casual eating areas are located around the park, including the Far View Terrace Cafe and the Far View Lounge, both located near the Far View Lodge, the Spruce Tree Terrace Cafe near the Museum, and the Knife Edge Cafe in the campground. The fine dining option, the Metate Room Restaurant, is located in the Far View Lodge and reservations are recommended.

Picnics are also a good option while you are exploring the park and you will find picnic areas and tables in many areas of the park.

10. Go Camping

You can camp in or near Mesa Verde National Park to experience more of the outdoors. The Morefield Campground in the park is open from April until around October and can accommodate both tents and RVs. The campground is conveniently close to the park entrance which makes it easier to access for RVs and easier to get out and pick up any supplies or groceries you may have forgotten. In addition, a gas station, a small grocery store, laundry and shower areas, and a gift shop are all located near the campground.

You can also find camping outside of the park at many private and public campgrounds. Here are some of the nearby campgrounds that you might want to consider:

  • Ancient Cedars (Private)
  • Mesa Verde RV Park (Private)
  • Bright Star Campground (Private)
  • Outback RV (Private)
  • Cortez RV Journey (Private)
  • Riverwood RV Resort (Private)
  • Mancos State Park (Public)
  • Echo Basin Cabin and RV Resort (Private)

There are also several dispersed camping areas near the park on BLM and National Forest land if that is more your style. Here is a blog post with some of these sites . If you do choose to camp inside the park, make sure you take advantage of the next item on our list!

11. Stargaze

Mesa Verde is a certified dark sky park . This means that the levels of light pollution in the park are very low, and more stars are visible to the naked eye than in most places. While you are visiting Mesa Verde, try to be in the park after dark at some point so you can experience a truly dark sky. If you are visiting during the summer, you will be able to see the Milky Way and the big dipper. Luckily, it is rarely cloudy in this part of the country, and your chances of being in the park on a clear night are high.

Bonus: Visit the Canyons of the Ancients Museum

Located outside of the park north of the nearby town of Cortez, the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum is operated by the Bureau of Land Management and sits on the banks of the McPhee Reservoir. It is a bit out of the way depending on where you are staying, but it’s worth a drive. We found it to be interactive and perfect for families with children.

The entire four corners area is full of historic and cultural sites of the ancient peoples who lived here. The National Park Service, BLM, and the National Forest protect various sites outside of Mesa Verde itself and many of these are great places to go if you are looking for less-crowded and less-restored ruins and archeological sites.

Here are a few options to consider:

  • Canyons of the Ancients National Monument
  • Chimney Rock National Monument
  • Hovenweep National Monument
  • Edge of the Cedars State Park and Museum
  • Aztec Ruins National Monument
  • Yucca House National Monument

Mesa Verde National Park

North america's largest cliff dwelling, about mesa verde tours.

Mesa Verde National Park is one of the most significant archeological sites in the world as it hosts hundreds of massive cliff dwellings and thousands of ancient ruins. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an International Dark Sky Park, and home to several species found nowhere else on Earth. So, one could say it’s kind of a big deal!

Mesa Verde is unlike any other National Park you’ll visit, in that it is an outdoor museum sprawled across a dramatic landscape. It is perfectly enjoyable to explore on your own, however you’ll forgo the majority of what there is to know about the cliff dwellings and other archeological sites.

Our Mesa Verde Tours allow you to explore the best areas of the park with extremely knowledgeable guides. Our guides provide a wealth of insight on the Ancestral Puebloan culture, how they built the incredible structures looming along the canyon walls, and many other fascinating facts about the region.

The Rangers are very knowledgeable and give a good explanation of what is known about the ancestral Pueblo an people who built these dwellings, both on the Mesa and in the alcoves below.
