8 Airlines That Give Students and Young Adults Discounts and Exclusive Benefits

Did you know airlines offer student and young adult discounts? Here's what you need to know to save money on your next flight.

When flight prices are high, it’s essential to find any way to cut costs. This is especially true for students, who might be on a limited budget or be less flexible for times and dates they can fly. Luckily, some airlines offer student or youth discounts. Although these discounts generally aren’t substantial, every little bit helps to make travel more accessible. Requirements and eligibility will vary by airline, but you can expect the promotion to be valid on economy tickets and select routes.

“We know travel is a priority for many young adults, so this summer season, which we anticipate will be United’s busiest ever with 5 percent more customers flying the airline this June, July, and August, we’re thrilled to offer United MileagePlus members ages 18 to 23 an exclusive discount on United Economy and Basic Economy seats – making it even easier for them to take flight on their next adventure,” says a spokesperson for United.

Here are some domestic and international airlines that offer discounts for students or young adult travelers. Depending on the airline, these benefits range from 10 percent off your fare to an additional checked bag.

MileagePlus members ages 18 to 23 can receive a 5 percent discount on economy and basic economy seats for bookings made through September 30, 2024. To redeem, log in to the United app, go to the “book flight” section, and select the young traveler discount. Flights will automatically have the promotion applied. Remember that basic economy seats might not include a checked bag, so you will need to travel light to make the promotion worth it. This is the only U.S.-based airline that offers student discounts at the time of writing.

Iberia Joven is a program for both students and young people. If you are under 30, you get a 10 percent discount on flights; if you book for a group of four or more, you get a 15 percent discount. If you are traveling to study abroad, you can take an extra bag and make a free change on your return flight, regardless of your age.

If you are enrolled at an eligible college or university, you can get 10 percent off when you book a Lite, Value, or Standard fare as part of Singapore Airlines student privileges . You will also receive an increased baggage allowance and a fee waiver on your first booking change. Singapore Airlines is unique in offering student discounts on economy, premium economy, and business class fares. All you need to do is verify your student status and start looking for deals.

Qatar Airways has one of the best student programs on this list. Once you enroll in the Student Club program, you will receive a coupon for 10 percent off your booking. After your first journey, you’ll get 15 percent off your next booking and 20 percent off after your second and third trips. Students also receive increased flexibility, extra baggage allowance, and complimentary onboard Wi-Fi. You can extend your privileges to friends and family by selecting them to be student companions. If you fly once a year while enrolled in the program, you will receive a one-time elite status tier upgrade when you graduate. Enrolling in the program is quick and free but can provide substantial savings if you’re a Qatar frequent flier.

Students ages 16 to 31 can receive up to 10 percent off economy and business class fares by using the promo code STUDENT to book a flight from now until March 31, 2025. You’ll also receive increased flexibility on your bookings. For all flights except those to/from Canada and the U.S., you will get 10 kilograms more or an extra piece of luggage. To qualify, you need a valid student ID or school acceptance letter at check-in.

SAS is another airline that offers youth tickets , but the amount you save will depend on the route you take and is difficult to predict. You must be between 12 and 25 years old and have a valid ID to be eligible. Seat availability is limited and is only available in specific booking classes (V class/O class). To redeem, simply search for a youth ticket.

Lufthansa has a looser interpretation of “student.” To qualify for their student fare benefits , you must be 16 or older and either be enrolled in higher education or have proof that you’ve been accepted. You can search for and book student fares once you verify your student status based on your departure country. Destinations will depend on your origin, but if you attend school in the U.S., you can fly to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India. Apart from savings, student fares also offer rebooking and refunds.

Turkish Airlines has a great student program . You can receive up to 20 percent off domestic flights within Turkey and up to 15 percent off international flights. You also get an increased baggage allowance, a free ticket change, and 25 percent bonus miles on flights through the end of 2024. You simply need to create a Miles&Smiles account, verify your student status, and book your ticket.

These programs are free to enroll in, so it only makes sense to take advantage of them if you are a student or eligible young adult who wants to see the world. Even if the savings aren’t substantial, every little bit helps when you’re on a budget.

Valuable travel discounts and deals for college students and young adults

Melissa Klurman

When my son turned 18, we suddenly had to rethink the way both he and we as a family traveled.

Quickly realizing that he needed his own paid Clear membership and TSA PreCheck number and that hotels no longer considered him a "kid" when we made a reservation, I envisioned a life of added dollar signs everywhere I looked.

Related: Child turning 18? Here's everything you need to know before the next time they travel

Luckily, I was wrong. Yes, young adults have added expenses (hello, car insurance premiums, and don't even get me started on exorbitant college tuition), but there are some hidden perks to being an 18-plus student, including rail deals and airline discounts.

With all of this top of mind, I couldn't help but wonder: Why do airlines, which are notorious for watching their bottom lines, want to give college kids a break?

"Loyalty matters greatly for airlines," said Katy Nastro, travel expert at Going . "Loyal customers help fill planes without spending marketing dollars while simultaneously feeding the revenue beast through cobranded credit cards [if they have one]. Gaining a loyal following takes time, so why not target people when they are young to help build that brand trust?"

Building loyalty plus saving money? Now that sounds like a win-win scenario to me.

travel allowance students

You may be surprised to discover that a number of airlines, especially international carriers, provide perks to student travelers, including discounts and increased luggage allowances, which come in handy for study abroad programs.

The following are the discounts that were active and had the most availability at press time, but check with other carriers if you have foreign travel within other regions planned since there may be other deals available.

United Airlines

United is the only U.S. airline that offers a consistent year-round discount just for young adults. You don't need to be a student to take advantage of this rate, either. Young adult travelers between 18 and 23 are eligible for discounts that start at 5% but are sometimes much more than that depending on the route, according to TPGers' firsthand experiences.

Note that this discount is only available on the United app.

Book before March 31 for Emirates' special sale for students . This deal is especially flexible for both younger and older students, with an extensive age range between 16 and 31 years old. Travelers need to present a current student ID or school acceptance letter at check-in.

Emirates' deal extends to 250 destinations, including some in the U.S., if you book your flight by March 31 and use the promo code "STUDENT" at booking. This code applies a discount of up to 10% on economy- and business-class fares. You also get an additional 10 kilograms (22 pounds) more weight for luggage or one extra piece of baggage depending on the route, plus flexible options to change your flight.

Singapore Airlines

Singapore's Student Privileges program was one of the most extensive discount programs I've found, offering reduced fares to students around the globe after you've verified that you're an active student through its KrisFlyer student verification service. After student status has been verified, you'll receive a 10% discount for Lite, Value and Standard fares in economy and for premium economy fares.

Students also get an increased luggage allowance, with three pieces allowed from the U.S. and Canada and 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of luggage elsewhere. Plus, Singapore Airlines will waive any fees for the first booking change you make. (Know, though, that if you keep changing, the carrier will start charging.)

Scandinavian Airlines

SAS makes booking its youth tickets very simple. The discount for this one applies to anyone age 12 to 25, and you do not need to prove eligibility beyond providing your birthdate.

Note that this discount only promises "special rates" without a specific percentage given, and no special luggage allowance is available. Still, it's worth checking out since we're fans of the airline's flight deals for kids .

If you're planning on studying abroad, definitely bookmark this deal: Lufthansa offers student fares with proof of enrollment for bookings originating in the U.S.

Student fares are only available in economy to destinations in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and India. Not only is the airfare discounted, but you'll be able to check a second bag for free.

Reduced fares are clearly identified as "Student Fare" on the flight selection page. Passengers must be full-time students age 16 and above, enrolled in a higher educational institution with a valid student email address, and must have a valid form of identification.

If you're a student going to school in Europe, budget airline Ryanair has a deal for you. Register with the Erasmus Student Network (a nonprofit, international student union) and you'll be eligible to get a 10% discount on Ryanair's already affordable tickets, plus a free checked bag.

Note that fares must be booked at least 28 days in advance, and the deal is only eligible during the school term (from Sept. 1 to June 15).

Select rail companies also offer travel deals and discounts for college-age students.

Amtrak is generous with its definition of student, allowing anyone between the ages of 17 and 24 to take advantage of its national student discount , which provides a 15% discount on regular fares.

Since this is a promotion my family regularly tries to book when possible (my son goes to college in Washington, D.C., and I live in New Jersey), I'm well versed in some of the pros and cons of this deal.

According to Amtrak, "The discount will automatically be applied when qualifying travel is selected. Or, use the Amtrak app and enter code V814 when booking your trip." I suggest doing the latter to ensure the reduced fare is applied to your booking.

There are a number of restrictions, and there's definitely a limited number of seats on each train that are eligible, but when it works, the savings are worth the effort. Also note that the earlier you book, the less expensive tickets are, so you'll have a better chance of saving more money. Keep in mind, too, that this deal must be booked at least a day before travel.

TPG has been following the rollout of Florida's Brightline train with much enthusiasm. The new, modern train system links Miami to Orlando with stops in several South Florida locations; it's a game changer for Florida travel, especially for trips to Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando .

Brightline has great rates for students on its current routes, including a 25% discount for students when you create an account with an active university email for most Florida colleges.

Exploring Europe by train is a rite of passage for students and young adults from around the world. One reason: It's an affordable and easy way to travel.

This is especially true with Eurail's Youth Discount , which reduces rail pass rates by up to 25%. You can use the youth pass discount if you're at least 12 years old but no older than 27.

Other deals for students

Student IDs unlock a world of discounts in the arts. Almost every museum I've visited around the globe has reduced or free admission for students who can prove their school affiliation or age. (Remember to always carry your student ID when you're traveling to take advantage of these deals.) Many Broadway theaters and performance venues elsewhere have student rush seats, too, making it possible to show up on the day of the show and spend some time in a line to score a steeply reduced ticket.

Unfortunately, you won't find deals on car rentals for young adults since the minimum rental age is usually 23. When there's a lower minimum age, like at Enterprise, you'll typically find an additional fee for younger drivers gets applied to the reservation.

Hotels are another area where student discounts are hard to find, but if you begin building your own brand loyalty by joining one or more rewards programs, you can eventually rack up enough nights, stays or points to qualify for elite status, which comes with all kinds of extra perks.

Bottom line

Being a young adult brings travel benefits in the form of discounts on airlines and trains. Students can almost always show their student IDs for reduced or waived admission to museums, too.

Going off to college or university can be an exciting time of life, with many new experiences to be had and new places to explore.

For those who plan to travel during school — be it for a study abroad program, an alternative spring break, a fun trip with friends or just to head home during school breaks — the cost of flying can be prohibitive. However, a number of airlines offer special deals on student flights to make travel more accessible.

Here is a list of airlines that offer student flight discounts for young people traveling around North America and beyond.

Instead of offering discounts on individual tickets, Air Canada offers a Student Flight Pass for students traveling frequently within the Americas. It also offers an International Student Flight Pass for those planning to travel frequently with more distant destinations.

You can either buy a pass outright or pay it off over nine months (with interest). The pass, coupled with your Aeroplan frequent flyer account number, scores you four to six flight credits (depending on the destination) to use over a specified amount of time, usually 12-15 months. You will have to choose a specific zone in which to fly (like the Western U.S., Alberta or Brazil).

One credit is valid for one one-way flight.

Make sure the pass covers travel to and from your preferred destinations. You will need to plan to fly with Air Canada at least as many times as your pass is good for or the investment won’t be worth it.

You have to be a student in one of the airline’s participating regions (which includes the U.S. and Canada) and traveling out of specific airports to take advantage of Cathay Pacific’s student flight discounts.

Eligible student travelers will:

Get access to exclusive fares to some destinations and select fare categories.

An extra baggage allowance.

Free flight changes for Flex fare classes.

Exclusive rates for Light and Essential classes.

The discount is good for one-way and round-trip flights to specific destinations, plus it can be used to book a seat in economy, economy plus or business class.

Just remember to include your Cathay number on your booking, use the relevant discount code listed online and bring a valid form of student ID when you check in at the airport or you won’t get the discount.

There are limited booking windows for flight discounts for students on Cathay Pacific (for example, in 2024, you must book by April 4 for travel through April 2025 if flying out of the U.S. or Canada).

Before you book, check the website for more details and keep an eye out for future dates.

Air France works a little differently when it comes to cheap flights for students. You’ll still have to prove that you’re a student with a valid student card, proof of enrollment or an admission letter at check-in, but you’ll mostly search for flights on the website as usual — except under “passengers,” make sure to select “student.”

When flight results appear, the student rate, if it’s available, will be in the first column. Prices will vary, but on the upside, the student rate always gets two free checked bags, and you’ll be able to change your flight for no additional fee.

Many eligible trips have to be at least 21 days long; however, there are a few flight options from France to specific destinations that have to be only seven days long.

Unlike with most airlines, the discount offered by Iberia is open to anyone under 30, even if you’re not a student (with additional benefits for those studying abroad).

If that’s you, check to see if Iberia Joven, the discount program for students, offers flights to where you’re headed. If it does, you may be able to score a 10% discount on certain flights and an extra free checked bag if you’re studying abroad.

Just make sure you book on the Iberia Joven site specifically, and know that not all routes are included and the discount is only for the lowest economy fares.

Lufthansa also offers flight discounts for students who book on the airline website. The discounts are valid only for certain flights from select countries, but in addition to fare savings on travel that qualifies, students get more checked baggage allowances and flexible booking.

To take advantage of these fares, you have to be at least 16 and enrolled in some sort of higher education. You'll have to verify your status as a student on the airline website. Then, when you search for fares, just remember to select “Student” to see any applicable discounts.

If you’re a student flying on Turkish Airlines, whether or not you’re a Turkish citizen, you can get up to a 20% discount on domestic flights within Turkey and 15% on international flights.

Students also enjoy a 40-kilogram baggage allowance (about 88 pounds) on flights that charge by weight and two 23-kilogram (about 50-pound) bags on flights that charge by piece. Students get free one-time flight changes for international flights, plus 25% more miles credited to your Miles&Smiles account when you fly before the end of 2024.

To get the discount, verify that you’re a student in the “Discount Types” section on the “My Personal Information” page in your Miles&Smiles loyalty account. Then just select the “Student” passenger option when searching for and booking flights.

Students flying to Emirates’ 250 destinations can score up to a 10% discount on economy and business class fares, plus an extra 10 kilograms (about 22 pounds) or an extra piece of luggage (except when flying to the U.S. or Canada).

Use code STUDENT in the promotional code box to book, then make sure you bring proof that you’re a student to check in.

This special is available only to students ages 16 to 31, and as of this writing, you have to book by March 31, 2024. Act fast and keep an eye on the airline for future deals if you’re a student planning travel to one of Emirates’ destinations.

Students flying on Singapore Airlines can enjoy a 10% discount on Lite, Value or Standard fares in economy class or premium economy class. They also get an extra luggage allowance, which is based on destination, and waived change fees the first time they need to alter their flight.

To enjoy these perks, first join the airline’s KrisFlyer loyalty program . Then you’ll be asked to verify that you’re a student, which you’ll need to do once a year. Then, when it’s time to search for flights, log in and do so on the airline’s dedicated student page. If you are younger than 16, you will not be able to verify your student status online.

SAS offers discounts not just for students, but youth in general, which includes individuals ages 12 to 25. The availability of these discounted fares on any particular flight is limited, and it’s reserved for SAS Go (standard economy) bookings for specific fare classes.

While no student ID is required, travelers will need to prove their age, so make sure to bring along a valid ID. Keep in mind that unaccompanied minors cannot book an SAS Youth Ticket.

There aren’t a lot of extra perks that accompany a Youth Ticket, and SAS doesn’t state how much you can save, but it’s worth searching to find out.

If you’re a student enrolled in higher education ages 18 to 30 and planning travel to any of Qatar Airways’ many destinations, it’s likely worth it to join the airline’s Student Club.

You’ll have to enroll online and share passport and university details, but once you do, you’ll be provided with a unique code to use during booking that will net you a discount.

That code will score you a 10% discount on your first flight, after which you’ll receive a new code for a 15% discount on your second booking and 25% off your third.

Students also get an additional baggage allowance, one complimentary date change for a booked flight and free Super Wi-Fi when you book on the airline website.

You can even fast-track your elite status once you graduate if you fly with Qatar at least once a year. The codes are valid only for Qatar-operated flights.

If you’re a college student, about to be a college student or — in the case of a few airlines — just qualify as a “youth,” you may be able to score some rich discounts and other benefits from a number of airlines.

Just make sure to take note of any special requirements from your preferred airline, sign up for loyalty programs in advance if necessary and enjoy the savings (plus a bit of extra baggage in many cases).

All the NSFAS 2024 allowances, including travel and accommodation

Ali Bahati Juma

The National Students Financial Aid Scheme ( NSFAS ) opened applications for the 2024 academic year recently. Naturally, university and TVET students in South Africa are keen to know how much the allowances will be, including for accommodation, travel and students with disabilities.

Higher Education, Science and Innovation Minister Dr Blade Nzimande announced the amounts during a media briefing earlier this month. Notably, he said the living allowance for TVET college students will increase this year from R6,000 to R10,000.

“This was done as part of the continued efforts to bring parity between the University and TVET sectors and is a significant achievement in driving transformation in the TVET sector,” Nzimande explained.

“TVET college students who are registered on an occupational qualification may qualify for allowances only if in simulated training. Students registered on an occupational qualification that have an employment contract and are paid [a] stipend do not qualify for NSFAS allowances.”

NSFAS is always available to provide you with all the important information to assist you to successfully apply for #NSFAS2024 funding. If you are not sure if you qualify to apply, then check out this poster for more information. #ComeWithUs pic.twitter.com/ABUlvRz9NZ — NSFAS (@myNSFAS) January 12, 2024

Students are already aware that they may qualify for either a travel allowance or accommodation allowance. However, NSFAS has now introduced a differentiated accommodation cap between metro and non-metro areas. This means that the maximum accommodation allowance will be higher in metro areas compared to non-metro areas.

NSFAS 2024 allowances

NSFAS allowances in 2024 include living, travel, accommodation, learning material, distance education and for students with disabilities. The sections below show how much each allowance will be.

Living allowance

This year’s living allowance is R16,500 for university students per annum. This amount includes R3,045 for personal care and R13,455 for meals. For TVET college students, the annual living allowance is R10,000.

Accommodation allowance

This year, the maximum accommodation allowance is R50,000 for all institution-owned or leased as well as private accommodation in metro areas. For non-metro areas, the amount is R41,000.

Students who live in institution-catered accommodation can get a maximum allowance of R66,500 in metros and R57,500 in other areas. For TVET colleges, this is capped at R60,000 in metros and R51,000 in non-metro areas. This type of accommodation allowance is inclusive of living and personal care allowances.

Travel allowance

“Students who opt to make their own accommodation arrangements with immediate family or with relatives do not qualify for the accommodation allowance. Instead, these students qualify for a travel allowance determined by the institution, up to a maximum of R7,875 in 2024,” the Minister explained.

Learning material allowance

University students can get a maximum learning material allowance of R5,460 in 2024. You can only use this allowance to buy books and materials and/or a learning device.

Distance education allowance

The personal care allowance for distance university students is R3,045 if you’re studying an equivalent full-time course credit load. This means that you’re registered for a minimum of 120 course credits in an academic year. “Allowances for students in distance education programmes are calculated based on the number of courses registered, up to a maximum of R5,460,” Nzimande said.

Allowances for students with disabilities

The living allowance (including meals) for students with disabilities is R20,000 in 2024. University students also qualify for a learning materials allowance of R6,000. For TVET college students, the learning materials allowance is included in the tuition cost. There is also a once-off assistive devices allowance, which is capped at R50,000. Those who get assistive devices can also get R2,000 per academic year for repairs and maintenance.

According to Nzimande, students with disabilities do not automatically qualify for the assistive devices allowance or the repairs and maintenance thereof. “The allowances are only granted if the student application for these allowances is approved, and all conditions and criteria are met as set out in this policy standard,” he explained.

All of this information is unnecessary. Non of these amounts are received. this is just for publicity. I wish the government could be realistic with their budget allocations.

5 airlines with great baggage allowance for students

5 airlines with great baggage allowance for students

There’s just so much to pack when you study abroad!

Unlike domestic students, international students essentially start a new life when they head to a foreign university to study. Being unfamiliar with the new location means having to pack more stuff to tide you over before you figure out where to get those same supplies in your new town.

Add to that all the things you want to bring to remind you of home ( Indomee/Maggi noodles, photos, Milo, etc) and you’ll find out you’ve most likely exceeded the basic baggage allowance on your airline.

To make this slightly easier for you (we know you’ll likely still overpack), here’s a list of airlines with the more generous baggage allowance around:

1. British Airways

For one year from Sept 15, Malaysian students can bring up to 69kg worth of luggage when they book a ticket with British Airways’ travel agents. This comprises a checked-in baggage of up to 46kg and a one-piece hand baggage of up to 23kg per person per trip.

2. Etihad Airways

According to Make My Trip , those heading from India to United States, UK and Australia can bring three pieces of bags weighing up to 23kg each. Those going from India to Europe can bring two bags weighing up to 23kg each. Students have to contact Make My Trip  make arrangements as it’s an offline deal.

3. Air India

The airline offers students an extra baggage allowance in the form of one piece of luggage up to 23kg. Destinations covered include US, UK, Europe, South East Asia, Far East Asia and Australia. This is an offline deal and students have to contact Make My Trip  for it.

4. Sri Lanka Airlines

By becoming FlySmiles members, students will be eligible for the free baggage allowance of 40kg through Sri Lanka Airlines’ offer which will apply to online bookings made between Feb 18, 2017  March 31, 2018 for flights between Feb 18, 2017 till March 31, 2018.

5. Qatar Airways

For students traveling from India to US, the carrier is offering students extra baggage allowance of three pieces weighing up to 23kg per piece, according to its website . Whereas from India to European locations such as Amsterdam, Berlin, Moscow, etc. they are allowed 40kg of baggage. The offer is valid for bookings made before March 31, 2018 for flights before Dec 31, 2018.

International and Domestic Programs Travel Allowance

The International and Domestic Programs Office (IDPO) will provide study abroad participants a travel allowance, which is a contribution towards the cost of round-trip airfare. This allowance will be based upon travel from the closest international airport from your home city (officially listed in Pomona College records) to your study abroad destination. Domestic program participants who receive Financial Aid from Pomona College are also eligible to receive a domestic travel allowance, if needed, for transportation to and from their program site. The IDPO has partnered with Corniche Travel, which will assist in booking your flights. All students must book their tickets through Corniche in order to receive the travel allowance benefit.

Booking Your Ticket

You must arrive by the designated start date and time for your program. Remember to allow for time changes, connecting flights, weather, airport screening, international immigration procedures, and in-country transportation from the airport to the program site. Be aware that in many cases travel may take you one or two days to reach your destination.  Before making your travel arrangements, verify your program dates and arrival instructions with your program sponsor. Be sure and view our Travel Resources page for more information.

As you prepare to travel, plan for high security at airports and lengthy waiting times. Most airlines advise that you arrive at the airport two to three hours prior to an international flight and one to two hours prior to a domestic flight. Often, there is a cutoff time after which travelers who haven’t arrived at the airport and/or checked in for their flight will be removed from the flight. Review your tickets carefully to determine the rules for your flight.

Pack carefully. Airlines do not permit any sharp objects in carry-on bags. These include such items as: scissors, tweezers, utility knives, and razors. In addition, you may wish to contact airlines directly about other recommendations related to packing items like computers, cameras and electronic equipment. Confirm your reservations before you depart. Airline schedules fluctuate frequently, and it is important that you stay in touch with the airlines and Corniche Travel about any changes that may occur.

Unless otherwise specified, the per diem locality is defined as "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city, including independent entities located within those boundaries."

When a military installation or Government - related facility(whether or not specifically named) is located partially within more than one city or county boundary, the applicable per diem rate for the entire installation or facility is the higher of the rates which apply to the cities and / or counties, even though part(s) of such activities may be located outside the defined per diem locality.
