Hamlet marks Eddie’s second solo show following last year’s sold-out run of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, which played to rave reviews at Greenwich House and in London’s West End. 

London’s Telegraph called the show “Absorbing and intimate. An impressive sweeping performance.” 

NBC-TV'S Today Show said “To be or not to be 23 different characters, that is the question. And Eddie Izzard’s Hamlet is the answer.” 

Theatermania.com said Izzard “makes each verse crackle.” 

New York Stage Review said, “Oh what a noble prince (plus everyone else) is Eddie Izzard.” 

Hamlet is adapted by Mark Izzard and directed by Selina Cadell, with whom Eddie also collaborated on Great Expectations. It is produced by WestBeth Entertainment, Mick Perrin Worldwide, and John Gore. The design team is Tom Piper (set), Tyler Elich (lighting), Tom Piper and Libby DaCosta (costume stylists), and Didi Hopkins (Movement Director).

Eddie Izzard , aka Suzy Izzard, is setting out on a career-spanning North American standup comedy tour in Fall 2023.

Titled “Eddie Izzard – The Remix: The First 35 Years,” the 28-city tour kicks off in Nashville on September 7th. It will continue with multi-night stands in New York City, Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver, DC, and more, as well as stops in cities like Boston, Toronto, Chicago, Austin, and Portland before wrapping up in Dallas on November 5th. For the majority of dates, a Live Nation pre-sale is ongoing (use access code DISCO ) ahead of the general on-sale taking place on Friday, June 23rd via Ticketmaster . For those wishing to attend the shows in San Francisco or Austin, the pre-sale begins on June 27th ahead of the general on-sale commencing on June 29th via Izzard’s website .

Once tickets are on sale, you can also find them at StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

“In the first 35 years of my standup career I came up with many weird and crazy comedy stories,” Izzard shared in a press statement. “The ones I like the best will be in my 2023 live Remix Tour.”

Izzard has been exclusively using she/her pronouns since December 2020. This past March, the comedian announced she would begin using the name Suzy in addition to Eddie, but “people can choose what they want.”

Actor, comedian, multi-marathon runner and political activist Eddie Izzard’s boundary-pushing career spans 35 years of record-breaking comedy tours and critically acclaimed film, TV, and theatre performances. 

Izzard made her West End stage debut in 1993 in her show Live at the Ambassadors , in which she received an Olivier Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement.   Live at the Ambassadors was followed by a succession of critically-acclaimed stand-up shows: Unrepeatable , Definite Article , Glorious , Dress to Kill , Circle , Sexie, Stripped , Force Majeure and Wunderbar . Force Majeure became the most extensive comedy tour ever, playing in over 45 countries and in all 50 US states. She now tours her shows in four languages (English, French, German and Spanish).

Eddie Izzard announces a new tour

Remixing some of the stand-up hits

Eddie Izzard has announced an autumn tour – offering revamped versions of the greatest hits of her 35-year stand-up career.

The comedian will revisit routine  such as Darth Vader and Mr Steven in the Death Star canteen, the monkey in the tree from French lessons and the Pear that never seem to ripen.

Izzard – who now also goes by the name Suzie – said: ‘In the first 35 years of my standup career I came up with many weird and crazy comedy stories. The ones I like the best will be in my 2023 live Remix Tour.’

The show will cover her career from  Live At The Ambassadors in 1993 to Wunderbar in 2019. 

Her Force Majeure tour became the most extensive ever, playing in more than 45 countries and in all 50 US states and she now performs globally in four languages: English, French, German and Spanish.

News of this autumn’s dates comes a week after the comic ended her solo version of Dickens’ Great Expectations, which has run in the West End of London since mid-May.

Eddie Izzard is to tour the UK in November and December.

The comedian explains the format as follows: "In the first 35 years of my stand-up career I came up with many weird and crazy comedy stories. The ones I like the best will be in my 2023 live Remix Tour ."

Eddie Izzard: The REMIX Tour Live will run in America in September and October, before coming to Britain from 8th November. There are dates in Glasgow, Cardiff, Birmingham, Oxford, Sheffield, Salford, Richmond and Brighton, with the tour concluding on 5th December.

Actor, comedian, multi-marathon runner and political activist Eddie Izzard’s boundary-pushing career spans 35 years of record-breaking comedy tours and critically acclaimed film, TV, and theatre performances.

Izzard made her West End stage debut in 1993 in her show Live at the Ambassadors , in which she received an Olivier Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement.   Live at the Ambassadors was followed by a succession of critically acclaimed stand-up shows: Unrepeatable , Definite Article , Glorious , Dress to Kill , Circle , Sexie, Stripped , Force Majeure and Wunderbar . Force Majeure became the most extensive comedy tour ever, playing in over 45 countries and in all 50 US states. She now tours her shows in four languages (English, French, German and Spanish).

Eddie Izzard is the essence of eclectic. He is a mystery wrapped in an enigma. He is a man dressed in women's clothing. He is also absolutely hilarious. With a rambling and scathingly sarcastic style, he touches on everyday issues in a way that is thought provoking and humorous at the same time.

With Dress to Kill, which premiered in the United States in 1999, the country was exposed to a comedian that was like nothing we had seen before. He was wearing high heels and makeup, but with very masculine gesticulation and manner. Eddie Izzard strolled onto the stage and gave an unparalleled comedic performance that touched on everything from puberty to Hitler.

He had mastered his craft and perfected his own unique style of delivery, often rambling from one subject to another but ultimately tying everything together in a way that makes perfect sense. Wit and knowledge are at the forefront of the humor.

Seeing a live performance is sure to keep you laughing and thinking. Pondering things that at first may seem ridiculous, but later give you pause for thoughtful reflection. Eddie is the essence of what comedy should be, letting it all hang out and having a good laugh in the process.

A one-person take on Hamlet starring a famous comedian sounds like a recipe for self-indulgence. (Or the opening premise for a deliberately off-kilter affair, as in the ridiculous and sublime Gary Busey’s One-Man Hamlet , performed by David Carl at Chicago Shakespeare as part of the theater’s Shakespeare 400 festival in 2016.)

But as anyone who has followed Eddie Izzard for a while knows, she’s not just a mugging shtick machine, but an actor of sinewy intelligence and quicksilver chops. Her take on Shakespeare’s tragic Danish prince (now in a short run at Chicago Shakes) may not be the deepest or most lyrical you’ll ever see. But I found that it provided a chance to connect with parts of Hamlet’s character and circumstances that I hadn’t considered before. Izzard, who is genderfluid and announced last year that she would also be using the name Suzy, knows what it’s like to move through the world with multiple understandings and permutations of one’s core identity, just as Hamlet does. And in terms of performance stamina, Izzard also won attention for running multiple marathons for charity, without any real training in long-distance running. (The 2010 BBC miniseries Eddie Izzard: Marathon Man , traced part of that journey.) That stamina surely serves her well in this show. Though the script has been shaved down considerably by adapter Mark Izzard (the performer’s brother), it’s still two-plus hours on a bare stage with no props (Selina Cadell directs). Simple but effective shifts in lighting (designed by Tyler Elich) announce the arrival of the ghost of King Hamlet. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are literally hand puppets: Izzard holds her hands up in front of her to depict the interchangeable stooges of Hamlet’s scheming uncle Claudius, who of course murdered his father and married his mother, Queen Gertrude.

By having one person invest in all these characters, Izzard creates a Hamlet who is literally surrounded by people who look exactly like him, but whose motives he cannot fully discern or trust. Where should he focus his rage and grief, and when? It’s a bit like a Shakespearean take on the famous fun house shoot-out scene in The Lady From Shanghai . (Izzard’s oversized shadow also pops up at key moments to suggest the dark thoughts haunting the prince.)

Izzard’s embodiment of the two women in the play—Gertrude and Ophelia—suggests that they are, like Hamlet, caught up in a web spun by powerful men. In particular, having the same person play both the grieving prince and the young woman driven mad by that same prince murdering her father shows the strong emotional bonds and history of trauma shared by Hamlet and Ophelia. But while the former is expected by traditional masculine standards to “take arms against a sea of troubles,” the latter feels she has no choice but to consign herself and her troubles to the waters. There are, as one might expect, plenty of strong comedic bits threaded throughout the show (the aforementioned scenes with R and G and the gravedigger are particular crowd-pleasers). But Izzard and her collaborators have invested a lot of thought into making the story clear and resonant. I’m not sure how well someone who has not seen Hamlet before will follow all the narrative intricacies here, but Izzard’s attention to the language is palpable without being fussy. She also draws in the audience at key moments, particularly in Hamlet’s “What’s Hecuba to him or he to Hecuba . . .” soliloquy after the prince meets with the player king. She moves offstage to be closer to us, as if her Hamlet is really asking us, “How do I find the passion in real life this guy finds onstage?”

Izzard clearly has passion and empathy for Hamlet, and that transcends the occasional awkward transitions between characters. By showing us a man who is betrayed by the people who should care for him most, and who cannot break out of that toxic hall of mirrors without losing everything, her Hamlet stands alone as a daring and deceptively simple take on one of the best-known stories in English drama.
