The best wildlife documentary never made

A well-known past tends to be what first comes to mind when you think of Rwanda, but let us introduce you to the present. In the cities, you’ll find welcoming people, a warm sense of community, and museums documenting Rwanda’s history. Rwanda

Tiny Rwanda lies encircled amongst the landscapes of the African Great Lakes region of Central and eastern Africa. Once known as ‘Le Pays des Milles Collines’ (the land of a thousand hills), its lush landscapes are dominated by rolling hills and verdant plantations of tea and coffee. To the north-west lie the towering volcanic peaks of the Volcanoes National Park, home to a third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas and Rwanda’s big draw card.

But this ...

But this stunning country has more than just volcanoes and gorillas to offer. Its picturesque Parc National Nyungwe has the most extensive montane rainforest in the region, whilst the pristine shorelines and untouched islands Lake Kivu are teeming with birdlife. Since the tragic genocide of 1994 thrust Rwanda into the public eye, the country has taken great strides towards recovering its pride and identity, striving to make the country a safe and thriving destination for tourists. The events of the recent past are never far from people’s minds though, and tributes to the dead in the form of memorials and museums are a constant reminder for generations to come. But visitors to this resilient and remarkable country will find an African success story, filled with scenic and cultural beauty that will leave a refreshingly optimistic view of hope for the future.

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Planning your Gorilla safari can be an enjoyable experience in Africa, but there are some important considerations to guide your gorilla tour preparations. These include choosing the best season, deciding what type of gorilla safari you’d like to undertake and where, and selecting accommodations.

The opportunity to track mountain gorillas in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is such an amazing wildlife experience regarded by most travelers as the highlight of any safari to Africa. To inspire you, we have crafted customizable itineraries to help you plan a gorilla safari , spend some time with these endangered gentle giants in the wild. Mountain Gorillas

With about 1050 mountain gorillas left in the world, Uganda and Rwanda harbor the largest population of these species however the gorilla groups in Virungas are easier to access than those living in Uganda’s impenetrable rain forest of Bwindi. Embark on a 3 hour drive from Kigali to the volcanoes , check in your lodge for dinner and overnight stay. Tracking the gorillas begins the next day, it takes a lot of effort as the bushes are thick with stinging nettles and steep slippery slopes and that’s why its always advisable to carry 4 bottles of water , a rain coat and rubber boots. You will enjoy a full hour in the midst of the gorillas taking pictures (no flash) and observing their way of living, feeding and resting.

Rwanda Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Mountainous and land-locked, little Rwanda – about the size of the state of Maryland – is becoming a big draw for safari-goers in central Africa. Its national parks harbor endangered mountain gorillas as well as chimpanzees and other primates who live among the rainforests. Guided safaris are essential when tracking these magnificent and elusive creatures.

Rwanda first burst into world news in 1994, when some 800,000 of its citizens died in a three-month mass genocidal slaughter ignited by long-simmering ethnic hostilities between the Tutsi and Hutu tribes.

It was further inflamed by the Hutu government, which urged Hutus to kill all Tutsis – even their friends and neighbors. After the Tutsis fought back and a coalition government was negotiated, the tiny country has since been at peace, and is now emerging as a prime safari destination – most notably for tracking rare and elusive mountain gorillas found in its Volcanoes National Park.

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

As one of the most popular tour options in Rwanda , gorilla trekking is a thrilling, challenging, and rewarding  way to explore the  Rwandan rainforests and observe their gentle giant residents up close .

Guided tours of these gorilla habitats are required, as there are important permits that must be attained beforehand as well as strict regulations that are followed.

There are only a small number of viewing permits available daily, the price of which varies by tour. This is a result of the critically endangered status of mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, who are under the vigilant care of park rangers.

While travelers may feel a bit hesitant to come up-close and personal with the gorillas and their families, they are habituated and therefore used to human interactions. Even still, viewing them from a comfortable distance is usually the best course of action, although guides will make allowances as they see fit.

Given the arduous hiking through bamboo forests that are required to reach the gorillas’ habitats, it is recommended that travelers wear pants, long-sleeved shirts, and hiking boots. Cameras will be useful for photographing the gorilla families or taking portrait photos. Since the national parks that protect these gorillas are highly regulated, visitors are constantly monitored by rangers to ensure both their safety and that of the animals.

While travelers may wish to spend days amongst the primate families, guided tours are limited to one hour in groups of 10 or less. Therefore, in order to ensure that you are able to partake in this unforgettable experience, book a guided tour of Rwanda’s rainforests in advance.

Wildlife in Rwanda

From plains to rainforests, and rivers in between, Rwanda is gifted with not only several hundred endangered species of birds, but also populations of critically endangered mammals and reptiles. The country’s elevation of 3,000 kilometers above sea level provides unique habitats for a variety of animals, some of which are only found in a handful of places outside of Rwanda’s national parks.

Travelers to Rwanda’s Akagera National Park are able to view lion prides, zebras, giraffes, and elephants. Hippopotamuses and crocodiles make their homes in the Kagera River and other ones that run through Rwanda while rhinoceroses and antelopes roam the surrounding plains.

Guided safari tours, which include gorilla trekking opportunities are widely available in Rwanda. June - September is considered to be the best time to undertake one of these tours, as it is when the country is experiencing its long dry season. For those interested in botanical life, Rwanda also boasts various species of grassland savannah flowers and trees.

While the country’s rainforested national parks host the majority of its wildlife and plants, even they are becoming threatened as Rwanda’s population continues to swell. Conservation efforts are underway to maintain the space needed for Rwanda’s wildlife, but it is still crucial to respect all guidelines on tours, especially those given by park rangers.

Disturbances or destruction of wildlife habitats is taken very seriously by Rwandans, a fact that is important for travelers to remember as they explore its vast biodiversity.

Birding Tours in Rwanda

While many travelers to Rwanda look forward to gorilla trekking, birding tours in Rwanda are not to be overlooked. As Rwanda has over 600 species of birds, some of which are critically endangered, it is no surprise that guided tours of Akagera and Nyungwe national parks will emphasize the importance of looking up while on the trails.

Whether or not you are a birding expert, the brilliant colors and unique calls will highlight the majesty of the land that these animals have made their homes in. It is imperative that travelers follow the observation rules set by the parks and their tour guides in order to maximize the potential of seeing birds.

Note that guided tour groups are usually small, as this minimizes the possibility of birds being scared away. This means that booking a guided tour in advance is necessary, as it ensures a spot in the limited groups.

In the same way, travelers will be asked to remain on the designated paths with their groups in order to protect the habitat they are viewing, as any disturbances of it will be felt by the animals that live within in.

That being said, when flushing birds in order to view them, it should not be done frequently or without the help of tour guides. Touching birds or their eggs are expressly prohibited, but taking pictures to convey their natural beauty to others is highly recommended.

Top National Parks in Rwanda

Although Rwanda is not an especially large country, it does have its fair share of national parks that have gained world recognition for their conservation efforts. Volcanoes National Park is home to five of the eight volcanoes that Rwanda hosts, making it a prime location for the mountain gorilla families that are protected within its borders.

Travelers can also enjoy exploring Musanze Caves at the feet of these colossal volcanoes after they finish a gorilla trekking tour or before they start. Hiking trails lead travelers to flooded craters, which make for stunning lake-side photos.

At Nyungwe Forest National Park , mountain gorillas are nowhere to be found but various species of monkeys, birds, and chimpanzees instead  make their homes among the rainforests. As one of the largest protected swathes of untouched rainforest in Rwanda, visitors are relegated to specific hiking paths.

However, this does not dampen the fun and adventure that comes with visiting Nyungwe Forest National Park, as the Igishigishigi Trail is the highest one in East Africa. Located in the canopy level of the rainforest, the suspension bridge leads to the highest mountain in the national park, making it a very handy way to examine and transverse the surrounding biodiversity.

Akagera National Park consists of not only swamps and savannahs, but also forests, making it habitable for creatures of all sizes. While hippopotamuses and crocodiles swim in the rivers, are bird species fly above lion prides and giraffe and elephant herds.

Travelers can participate in safari or river excursions through guided tours that extend into all aspects of the park, including its renowned accommodation options. When visiting Rwanda, the hardest decision you may have will be deciding which national park to visit first.

As a country that has seen many political and social changes, Rwanda is unique for its maintenance of old traditions amidst the rise of new ones. Beyond the gorilla trekking tours in the mountains are visits to collections of art, traditions, as well as genocide memorial sites.

For those in Kigali, a guided tour of the Kigali Genocide Memorial is a way to engage with the past tragedies of Rwanda. Visitors to this site, along with Nyamata Church, are able to pay respects to the victims as well as understand the history behind the genocide that devastated the world.

In the same city, travelers can view contemporary African art at Inema Arts Centre. While there are also workshops for resident artists in the building, travelers can view the many different art installations on the property. Exhibits alter with the artist, but the museum maintains a high variety of mediums and international sponsorships.

In the same way, the Niyo Cultural Centre works to showcase the art of primarily Rwandan artists. Guided tours of the museum, as well as the educational dance and drumming classes, may be arranged in advance.

Further from the capital is the King’s Palace in Nyanza. Guided tours of this site will not only reveal the meaning behind the artwork that depicts European and Rwandan interactions over the years, but also the many ancient traditions that are still continued today. These include singing to the ornately decorated and well-cared for Inyambo cattle that live behind the domed complex.

Rwandan Cuisine

For Rwandans, it is common to have a light, simpler breakfast, followed by a similarly light lunch. Dinners are the heaviest meals and are the ones most likely to have meat if they do at all.

A refusal to partake in a meal that is offered to you in considered to be a serious insult, which is a cultural value that travelers should consider as they explore Rwanda. A staple of Rwandan cuisine is vegetables , with minimal emphasis on animal products. This means that most meals are made with local ingredients, especially ones that can be grown year-round such as potatoes.

Plantains , as well as cassava leaves or tubers, are traditionally found in at least one if not two meals a day. Between meals, Rwandans will often snack on tropical fruits which are abundant in the country. What meat is consumed is oftentimes fish , especially along the lakes or rivers where tilapia is popular.

Beef and chicken are also widely available, although they are less likely to be consumed than fish. Travelers will oftentimes see meat-skewers, locally known as brochettes at street vendors or offered at restaurants.

Marinated in various spices and sauces, goat meat or beef skewered and cooked over a charcoal grill, providing a tasty meal option no matter the time of day.

The Capital: Kigali

Travelers to Kigali , the national capital, will be happy to find themselves amidst clean streets and well-repaired roads. This is because, even as coffee shops and other modern conveniences continue to spring up throughout the country, Rwandans still practice “Umuganda” Day.

With roots in traditional small agricultural communities, Umuganda Day compels Rwandans across the country to close shops and clean, fix, or act to benefit their neighborhood. Therefore, while Kigali is one of the busiest cities in Rwanda, it also serves as a model for how small community efforts can have large-scale, positive impacts.

In the same way, Kigali hosts the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which is both a museum and mass burial site for nearly 250,000 victims. The memorial’s museum details not just the events leading up to the genocide, but also what occurred during it, with emphasis on prevention of similar atrocities in the future.

The Niyo Art Gallery and the Inema Arts Center are also located in the capital city. While the Niyo Art Gallery focuses on artists and dancers from Rwanda, the Inema Arts Center showcases a much more expansive, contemporary African art collection. At the Kimironko Market, travelers can not only find fresh fruits and vegetables, but also authentic handicrafts. This makes it an ideal location for souvenir-searches, new additions to wardrobes, or even a traditional Rwandan meal.

What to Expect From Accommodations in Rwanda

Although Rwanda is still in the process of expanding its tourism industry, travel accommodations are still plentiful. The Radisson Blu and Marriott hotel chains have locations in Kigali and are very popular with travelers for their international fame. However, travelers may opt to stay in the Kigali Serena Hotel or Heaven Boutique Hotel as well, both of which are locally owned and geared towards improving Rwanda’s reputation in tourism.

All hotels in Rwanda are equipped with the conveniences usually found in other hotels, including pools, gyms, and air-conditioning. Rooms tend to be smaller, which is important for travelers to consider when making accommodation plans with their guided tour groups. When engaged in gorilla trekking or birding tours, travelers in Rwanda can expect to stay in lodges or hostels near the sites they are exploring.

While this may not sound appealing to some travelers, Rwanda has worked hard to provide travelers with the same luxury accommodations and modern conveniences that they find in cities. Therefore, many of the hotels and lodges found in national parks have not just spas and delicious food options, but also stunning views and close proximity to Rwanda’s famous biodiversity.

TV and internet are found in all luxury hotels and lodges, which is useful for travelers who wish to plan their next guided tour through Rwanda’s urban and natural landscapes.

Book 7 Days Rwanda Group Safari

Guide for group tours to rwadda & african safari holidays 2024/2025.

Rwanda is the second smallest country in East Africa neighboring Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Rwanda is one of the countries in Africa whose economies are growing at a faster rate irrespective of the fact that the country’s history is marred by deadly civil unrests like the 1994 Genocide that left over 800,000 Rwandans dead.

It is currently one of the most peaceful safari countries in Africa. Peace in Rwanda is truly reflected in the cleanness of her capital city – Kigali, you will never see polythene waste on the streets unlike other African cities.

The only things you encounter are busy people doing business in Kigali city.

Rwanda is famous for its top-notch tourism destinations of almost all kinds.

She is known for hosting quite a number of primate species, notably the golden monkeys and mountain gorillas in Volcanoes national park, chimpanzees in the magical Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Rwanda is also a home to wild game that dwell in savannah plains of the magnificent Akagera National Park.

These include among others the big five animals (lion, leopard, buffalo, rhinoceros and elephant), giraffes, Uganda kobs, waterbucks, kopje and vast species of birds.

If you are planning for a wildlife safari whether as a couple on honeymoon, individual or a group, Rwanda should be you next safari destination.

Best time to Visit Rwanda

The top tourist attraction in Rwanda is undoubtedly the Mountain gorillas in the northern based Volcanoes National Park.

These can be found in Volcanoes national park, located in the famous Virunga volcanoes which is a chain of mountains stretching all the way from Uganda up to Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) .

The mountains neighboring this park are Mt. Muhabura, Mt. Karisimbi, Mt. Gahinga, Mt. Sabyinyo and Mt. Bisoke.

Visiting Rwanda particularly Volcanoes national park enables you embark on a popular gorilla trekking safari.

This activity gives you an opportunity to learn about these primates as you spend atleast one hour in their presence.

Get to know about the mysteries of mountain gorillas such as life in their families, inheritance of leadership by silverbacks (adult males), conquests and conservation status.

Visiting Rwanda gorillas is one of the activities that happen all year round, however, the dry season is the best time to embark on this famous adventure.

This is because of the favorable environment, trails are not slippery and forests are not as thick as during wet seasons.

Dry season in Rwanda happens in the months of January, February, June, July, August, September and December.

About Rwanda Safari Parks

Rwanda comprises of four national parks and each national park is famous and unique in its own way.

Embarking on a Rwanda safari, means a visit to any or all of these national parks irrespective of your trip’s duration.

You will either visit Akagera national park, Nyungwe Forest national park, Volcanoes national park or the newly created Gishwati-Mukura National Park.

Paying a visit to any of these places in Rwanda is making your Experience a remarkable adventure.

In Nyungwe Forest national park, you will do either chimpanzee trekking, monkey tracking, birding or canopy walking and other additional activities such as guided nature walks, tea plantation visits and so much more.

Akagera national park is a wildlife home where you encounter the big five animals that is the lion, leopard, buffalo, rhinoceros and the elephant.

In addition to the big five, you will see animals like giraffes, zebras, antelopes, Topis, eland, duikers and impalas.

You will also enjoy the beauty of rolling hills and lush savannah vegetation.

Volcanoes National Park, on the other hand enables travelers to meet mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, as well as golden monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys and colobus monkeys.

You will also see vast swashes of forests and bird species, some of which are rift valley endemics while others are at the verge of extinction.

Finally, the newly established Gishwati-Mukura national park, is home to activities such as tracking, bird watching, guided nature walks, hiking to top of the water falls and paying a visit to neighboring communities.

Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda

Mountain gorillas are one of the most beautiful creatures one should see at least once in their lifetime.

They are human-like creatures and people who have interest in studying about these primates say that gorillas are our closest cousins.

Gorillas are one of the primate species which live in groups or families. Each group is led by an adult male gorilla known as a silverback (this is because they have silver hair at their back).

Families live in specific sectors of the park and silverbacks are responsible for protecting the family from danger or threats whereas females are responsible for taking care of young ones and reproduction.

It should be noted that mountain gorillas are the largest primates on earth and they can live up to fifty years of age in captivity, while those that live in the wilderness can live for forty years since their survival entirely depends on themselves.

Volcanoes national park in Rwanda is a home to over 18 gorilla families, 11 of which are habituated and ready for trekking.

Another fact about mountain gorillas in Rwanda is that, they had been put on the Red list by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) .

That is because they were considered one of the endangered primate species. The approximate number of mountain gorillas remaining on earth is 1,063 with the majority of these dwelling in Uganda, particularly the forests of Bwindi Impenetrable national park.

Mountain gorillas communicate in unique ways while they are doing certain activities at a given time.

The communication can easily be understood by human beings and once given time, these mountain gorillas can understand human communication as well especially gestures and body movements.

This is yet another evidence that man is a close relative to mountain gorillas. They can communicate through vocalization, smiling, yawning, facial expressions, charging, waving, shaking tree branches, and so much more.

Why visit Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park?

Also known as Parc National des Volcans, Volcanoes national park is an outstanding destination all travelers look up to in Rwanda.

The uniqueness of the park starts from its strategic location in the North western province of Rwanda in Musanze at the heart of the legendary Virunga Conservation Area.

The park is just 2 hours away from the Capital of Rwanda – Kigali. This makes it one of the easy to reach destinations in Rwanda.

Choosing to visit Volcanoes national park is choosing a unique experience with the primates of the world.

By making that choice, travelers can easily take part in one or all of these rewarding activities; Golden monkey tracking, mountain gorilla trekking, visiting Dian Fossey grave, hiking Mt. Karisimbi / Virunga Volcanoes and bird watching.

Why visit gorillas in Rwanda?

Volcanoes national park has greatly contributed to the conservation of mountain gorillas.

Little wonder, mountain gorillas are one of the most visited primates in Rwanda by travelers.

Here are some of the reasons why one needs to leave their comfort zone and embark on a Rwanda gorilla safari;

Mountain gorillas can easily be accessed than anywhere else. It takes only two hours from travelers to transfer form Kigali city to Volcanoes national park for their amazing gorilla experience.

Gorillas in Volcanoes national park are in proper and good health. It is always advisable that humans should always avoid getting in contact with mountain gorillas during the trekking experiences.

This is because of the easy spread of infectious and communicable diseases from humans to gorillas and the reverse is true.

However, research has it that habituated gorilla families have stood higher chances of living and have a higher life expectancy compared to those that have not been habituated.

This means that since the majority of gorilla families in Volcanoes national park have been habituated (11 families out of 20 families), there are little or no chances of contracting diseases from these gorilla families during your visit to Volcanoes national park.

Volcanoes national park has one of the highest number of habituated gorilla families – 11 families, only second to Bwindi Impenetrable national park (Uganda) .

Therefore, availability of gorilla permits in Volcanoes national park is almost assured even for last minute gorilla trekkers.

Mountain gorillas are friendly creatures. They only fight in defense and they do not kill for pleasure.

Why go gorilla trekking in Rwanda?

There are 99 chances of sighting gorillas when you go to Rwanda for gorilla trekking.

The activity can be done all year round.

Rwanda gorilla trekking permits can be easily obtained.

Volcanoes national park is easily accessible from Kigali and Uganda, both by air and Road.

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda can easily be combined with other gorilla treks in Uganda and D.R. Congo as well as other safari activities in Akagera and Nyungwe national parks.

Why go chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda?

Nyungwe Forest national park is home to 13 species of primates and can easily be accessed by travelers from Kigali by air and road.

The roads to the park are well tarmacked and it takes four to five hours’ drive from Kigali to Nyungwe Forest national park for chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda.

There are amazing en-route activities along the way to Nyungwe Forest national Park for chimpanzee trekking.

These include; Nyanza King’s palace tour, Butare ethnographic museum tour, the National University of Rwanda and Murambi Genocide Memorial site.

Chimpanzee trekking permits in Nyungwe Forest national park are cheaper than those of Kibale Forest national park in Uganda and other parks in East Africa.

Cost of a Rwanda safari

Gorilla safari permits in Rwanda go for 1500$ for all types of travelers from all the corners of the world.

They can be obtained by travelers themselves through Rwanda Development Board or booking can be done by a trusted local tour operator.

It is however advisable that you book your permit at least 2 months before your safari to avoid any inconveniences.

How to reduce your gorilla trekking cost?

Rwanda gorilla permits have set prices and they do not come with discounts, however, there are many ways in which you can indirectly reduce on the cost of Rwanda gorilla trekking permits.

For example, you can opt for a mid-range or budget lodge instead of a luxury lodge while on a Rwanda Gorilla Safari.

Book other parks in addition to a gorilla tour in Volcanoes national park and discounts will apply.

Lastly, you can choose a short gorilla trekking safari, like a 1 or 2 days’ gorilla tour instead of a 3 days Rwanda gorilla safari.

All options equally give you the best gorilla experience at a lower cost.

When to book your Rwanda gorilla permit

For travelers intending to embark on a Rwanda gorilla trekking safari, the best recommendable time to book is 6 months before they make their way to Volcanoes national park for the activity.

Gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes national park in Rwanda has 20 gorilla families, 11 of which are habituated and they are available for trekking.

Gorilla families in Volcanoes national park include; Agashya family, Sabyinyo family, Titus family, Amahoro family, Susa A family, Umubano family, Susa B/ Karisimbi family, Hirwa family, Kwitonda family, Bwenge family and Ugenda group.

Rwanda gorilla trekking vs. Uganda gorilla trekking

Comparing Uganda and Rwanda has always been difficult when it comes to gorilla trekking; however, we can draw a line on a few things such as accessibility, trekking permits, costs, accommodation, etc. and get a distinction between the two countries.

In terms of accessibility of gorilla trekking destinations, it is easier to reach Volcanoes national park from Kigali than it is to reach Bwindi Impenetrable national park from Kampala. This makes Rwanda a better option.

Additionally, Rwanda has less habituated gorilla families in Volcanoes national park compared to Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable national park. Therefore, Uganda presents a wide variety of options than Rwanda.

In terms of gorilla trekking permit prices, Uganda presents relatively affordable gorilla trekking at 700$ per permit, compared to Rwanda at 1500$ per permit.

When it comes to altitude, it is easier to hike the trails in Rwanda compared to those of Uganda.

This implies that one has to be more physically fit to do gorilla trekking in Uganda compared to Rwanda.

Budget or luxury Rwanda tours?

The question of whether to embark on a budget or luxury tour in Rwanda lies in the hands of the traveller.

This is because every traveler has personal tastes and preferences in line with the intention and budget of the trip.

All you need to know is that Rwanda has both budget and luxury tour packages for all travelers and at any time of the year.

All you need is get in touch with your tour operator and have the best experience in Rwanda whether it is luxury or budget.

Population of Rwanda mountain gorillas

Like earlier stated, mountain gorillas are one of the animal species in the world which are at the verge of extinction.

However, efforts to conserve nature have done a great role in restoring gorilla populations after almost going into extinction.

In Rwanda alone, mountain gorillas have increased to 459 from 400 as per the most recent census.

The overall total of mountain gorillas in Rwanda, Uganda and DRC is 1,063 with Uganda hosting 53.9% of total population.

Hot air balloon safaris in Rwanda

This activity is not all that old in Rwanda, it was introduced in Akagera national park in 2022.

However, hot air balloon is a spectacular way of exploring the park while on top of it proving a bid eye’s view of the entire savannah vegetation.

It can be combined with other activities while on your safari to Akagera national park.

The activity starts with a briefing in the morning and follows the direction of the wind.

Minimum number of people on a hot air balloon is 4 and the maximum is 6 while it can be done by people aged six and above.

Hot air balloon safari in Rwanda happens all year round and every day of the week unless weather dictates.

To embark on a hot air balloon safari in Rwanda is truly to turn moments into memories.

Remarkable Rwanda & Gorillas of Uganda

9 days | uncover beauty and spot gorillas, monkeys and large game in rwanda and uganda.

group tours to rwanda

Rwanda and Uganda are often-overlooked travel destinations – but as an intrepid traveller, you won’t want to miss this nine-day journey through their wild landscapes, rich in history and wildlife. Learn about the devastating events that took place in Rwanda, a beautiful country that's continuously striving to move forward. Combine this with the incredible scenery and diverse animal life of Uganda and an unforgettable adventure searching for mountain gorillas, and you’ll experience the full spectrum of emotions and physical challenges.

Trip overview

  • With gorilla permits included in the price of the trip, seek out the rare mountain gorilla on a trek through Uganda's steamy forests and spend an unforgettable hour in their presence.
  • Learn about Rwanda's devastating history with a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, and see what life looks like today with a tour of the city’s most vibrant neighbourhoods.
  • Get to know the diverse wildlife of Queen Elizabeth National Park on a series of 4x4 game drives and an optional boat cruise around the lake.
  • You won’t even have to get out of bed to enjoy wildlife and wonderful views – Safari lodges and Eco Camps deliver epic scenery and wild visitors like elephants, buffalo, and hippos to your doorstep.
  • Visit The Gorilla Doctors HQ and learn about how they're saving the species one gorilla patient at a time, knowing that a proportion of your trip cost goes back to supporting the important work they do.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Gorilla Doctors. Donations help them care for injured mountain and Grauer's gorillas – contributing to the long-term sustainability of gorilla populations.
  • Tracking gorillas in the dense forest can sometimes be wet, muddy and uncomfortable. The terrain is by no means easy either, so it can be pretty strenuous and often humid. But the sheer thrill in coming across a habituated group of gorillas, dominated by a great male silverback, more than outweighs any difficulty. You need to be prepared and fit enough to walk up to 4 hours - up and down hill. A top tip is to pack some gardening gloves to assist in any up-hill climbs.
  • You may also want to check out Gorillas & East Africa Safari if you have more time to explore in East Africa.

View the itinerary for departures between 01 January 2024 - 31 December 2024

Welcome to Kigali, the capital of Rwanda since it gained independence in 1962. Most associate Rwanda with the horrific genocide that took place in 1994, but this is a country that has been striving to rebuild its economy for years and offers so much to the intrepid traveller. And though the past won't, and shouldn't, be forgotten, the future of Rwanda's tourism is looking bright thanks to its welcoming people, an abundance of lakes and the beautiful Virunga Mountains. Your adventure begins by meeting your fellow travellers and local leader at 6pm.

There are no meals included on this day.

You can arrive at any time as there are no activities planned until tonight's important welcome meeting at 6pm. Please ask the hotel reception where it will take place. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time for this, consider arriving a day early so you are able to attend. If you are going to be late, please inform the hotel reception. We'll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so please ensure you have these to give to your leader.

After breakfast this morning, your tour leader will take you to the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, which opened in 2004 to mark the 10th commemoration of the genocide against the Tutsi people. It serves as a museum detailing the history and consequences of Rwanda's genocide and a place for people to grieve for lost friends and family. This afternoon, you’ll drive to Musanze – the gateway to Volcanoes National Park, home to gorillas and golden monkeys.

This afternoon, you'll visit The Gorilla Doctors headquaters; the only organisation in the world dedicated to saving the mountain and eastern lowland (Grauer’s) gorilla species one gorilla patient at a time using veterinary medicine and science. They monitor the health of gorilla groups to ensure the early detection of disease and injury, and stage medical interventions when gorillas suffer from human-induced or life-threatening trauma or disease.

  • Kigali - Genocide Memorial Centre
  • Musanze - Visit to The Gorilla Doctors HQ
  • Kigali - Genocide Memorial Audio Guide - USD15

Today's driving time is approximately 2.5 hours.

Today, you’ll visit the The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. This research centre leads the world in protecting and studying gorillas while helping communities build their conservation capabilities. Learn about Dian Fossey’s life and the conservation of endangered mountain gorillas in Rwanda.

There are heaps of optional activities to do in Musanze, including Golden Monkey Trekking in the Virunga Mountains, the Mount Bisoke trek, or keep it chill with a canoe ride on the Mukungwa River. Maybe visit Redrocks Rwanda, where you’ll learn about the local banana beer production and be treated to some dancing, drumming and basket-weaving demonstrations.

  • Musanze - Visit 'Twin Lakes' Burera & Ruhondo - USD40
  • Musanze - Redrocks Rwanda Visit (Banana Beer & Cultural Activities) - USD50
  • Musanze - Mount Bisoke Hike - USD75
  • Musanze - Canoeing on River Mukungwa - USD80
  • Musanze - Golden Monkey Tracking in Volcanoes National Park - USD160
  • Musanze - Guardian Village - Iby'Iwachu Cultural Village - USD30

Some of the optional activities, including the Golden Monkey Trek, may mean missing out on the included visit to Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International Research Centre. Please ask your leader for more information.

The Golden Monkey Trek is offered as a pre-booked service which will guarantee you a place. If you would rather wait and try to get a better price by booking this locally on the ground, you are welcome to but keep in mind that this is a popular activity, and places are limited.

Today, you’ll leave Rwanda as we cross the border into Uganda, making our way to Queen Elizabeth National Park. This park is home to 618 bird species, 10 species of primates - including chimpanzees, and 95 different types of mammals. The route to your accommodation may feel like an unofficial safari. Keep a look out for African elephants, buffalo, hippos, warthogs, Nile crocodiles, leopards, spotted hyenas, lions and chimpanzees. Tonight, stay in a simple safari lodge within the park overlooking the Kazinga Channel.

Stay in a simple safari lodge within the park overlooking the Kazinga Channel. Today’s driving time is approximately 6.5 hours.

Wake up for another exciting day in Queen Elizabeth National Park with another 4x4 Game Drive. Be on the lookout for any sightings you may have missed yesterday, and if you’re really lucky, you might be able to spot leopards or lions. This afternoon, you have the opportunity to see the park from a different perspective with an optional cruise down the Kazinga Channel, linking Lake Edward to Lake George. You’ll be joined by local guides who will fill you in on everything you could want to know about the landscape and the animals who live within it – be on the lookout for hippos basking on the shore, as well as crocodiles, herds of elephants and abundant birdlife.

  • Queen Elizabeth National Park - 4x4 Game Drive
  • Queen Elizabeth National Park - Kazinga Channel boat cruise - USD30
  • Kalinzu Forest - Chimpanzee Trekking - USD205

Chimpanzee trekking is offered as a pre-booked service which will guarantee you a place. If you would rather wait and try to get a better price by booking this locally on the ground, you’re welcome to, but keep in mind that this is a popular activity, and places are limited.

This morning we make our way to Ishasha, the southern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Here you meet some local residents to learn more about rural life in Uganda. Visit a local organic farm, medicine garden and homestead and learn how its owner is tackling human-wildlife conflict with his anti-crop raiding techniques. You’ll also meet a local Mukiga woman who will share her story while showing you how to sort, pound and grind millet to make porridge and other Bakiga meals.

This part of the park is famous for its tree climbing lions, so be on the look out as you make the game drive towards our ecolodge in the northern sector of the park frequented by herds of elephants, buffaloes and antelopes!

  • Ishasha - Community Tourism Project Visit

Today, drive out of the Queen Elizabeth National Park on your way to the southwest tip of Uganda (approximately 6 hours). The journey is like a game drive in itself, with the chance to spot zebras, antelopes, baboons and monkeys out the window. When you arrive at the corner of Uganda, where the border touches Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, you’ll be based in Kisoro, which provides access to seven different gorilla groups located in Mgahinga, Nkuringo, Rushaga and Nshongi.

Your travel time today will be approximately 6 hours.

Join a local guide and trackers as you climb through the rugged, mountainous terrain of Bwindi National Park in search of mountain gorillas. A quick lock of eyes with these creatures is a truly primal moment and visits are strictly controlled to minimise disturbance. Make no mistake, tracking gorillas is no walk in the park – it's called Bwinidi Impenetrable National Park for a reason. It can be wet, muddy, strenuous and uncomfortable, but the indescribable elation at coming across a group of gorillas is worth the effort. Spend a mesmerising hour with the gorillas as they eat, sleep, groom and play as the male silverback watches over them, then return to the lodge for dinner and to reflect on this incredible experience.

  • Bwindi National Park - Mountain Gorilla Permit & Trek

Visits are strictly controlled to reduce possible negative impacts on gorilla health and behaviour. A surgical face mask must be worn while within proximity of the gorillas to minimise the risk of disease transmission.

Don’t forget to carry your rain gear, packed lunch, plenty of water, gloves, hat, and waterproof bag for protection of your camera in case of rain.

You will be provided with a walking stick and the option to hire a porter who can carry your day pack and assist you on the trek. It costs 20 USD to hire a porter, plus an optional tip.

Hiring a porter not only makes your trek easier but also encourages local communities to embrace gorilla conservation and tourism. Some porters are ex-poachers who now recognize the value in gorilla conservation practices.

After breakfast this morning, it’s time to make the journey back to Kigali. When you arrive, there are no further activities planned and your adventure comes to an end. If you’d like to spend more time here, just speak to your booking agent.

Please do not book international flights out of Kigali until after 3pm.
