Sprawling along the pristine waters of the Bay of Bengal, Visakhapatnam, the largest city of Andhra Pradesh, is a beach paradise. Popularly known as Vizag, the city is home to the oldest shipyard in the country, ancient temples and spectacular caves.

The main attraction in the city is a submarine-turned-museum, the first of its kind in Asia. Exploring life in the underbelly of the sea as you move through the various rooms that house exhibits showing the same can be an exciting experience. Borra caves, one of the largest in the country, are a delight for adventure lovers, who get to walk to the deep reaches of the warmly-lit caves. The city is peppered with parks and gardens, where visitors can laze around and soak in the natural beauty.

Built around 11th century, Visakhapatnam is popularly called the city of destiny, referring to its soulful natural beauty. It is also the headquarters of the Eastern Command of the Indian Navy. History says Visakhapatnam was ruled by king Visakha Varma, who built a temple here in the name of Lord Visakha and hence the city was minted. It is said Visakhapatnam was once a part of the empire of Kalinga, where emperor Ashoka fought a fierce battle. Primarily an industrial city, it draws a large number of tourists throughout the year. It is fondly called as "Jewel on the Coromandel Coast."

Places to Visit in Vizag (Visakhapatnam)

Kailasagiri.

Kailasagiri is a park which is located on top of the hill. One can easily get an overview of Vizag from this point. Also, the lovers of Lord Shiva would love this place and especially the huge statues of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. The park is developed by Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) in 380 acres land which is covered with greenery all around.

INS Kursura (S20)

INS (Indian Navy Ship) Kursura (S20) was a diesel-electric engine based Kalavri-class submarine of the Indian Navy. Becoming the fifth submarine of Indian Navy, it was first commissioned on 18 December 1969. After 31 years of its service, INS Kursura (S20) was decommissioned on 27 February 2001. It is now available for people to see it and know its importance in Indian Navy. If you are going to Vizag, this is one of the most important places to see in Visakhapatnam.

Thotlakonda is a Buddhist complex located on the hill near Bheemunipatnam which is approximately 15 Km from Visakhapatnam. It was known well in the presence of ancient Kalinga which was the most important source of Buddhist dissemination to Sri Lanka. This place is used to be one of the attractions for Buddhist monks and that is why the monastery complex was built here.

Visakha Museum

Visakha Mueseum was opened in year 1991 and is located in the port city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh of India. Visakha Museum is houses of the historical treasures and artifacts of the kalingandhra region. There are a lot of collections available to view and incudes ancient armory, crockery, coins, silk costumes, jewellery, stuffed animals, portraits, letters, diaries, scrapbooks, models of warships and a lot of other stuffs.

Matsya Darshini

Matsya Darshini is an initiative of the Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation. Matsya Darshini is an beautiful aquarium having a lot of species which includes long horn cow fish, butterfly fishes, peacock wrasse and a lot of ther fishes which you may not have seen before. Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary

Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is a forest which is located near Visakhapatnam and it is under the control of Andhra Pradesh Forest department since 10 March 1970. Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary was named after the local hillock Kambalakonda and the land was earlier under control of maharajah Vizaianagaram. The forst is dense and has evergreen trees all around it. Animals such as Indian leapord. jackals, tigers, and poisonous snakes like cobra and vipers can be seen in the sancturay.

Tenneti Park

Tenneti Park, in the city Visakhapatnam is also kown as Urban park. Tenneti Park is situated on the beach orad of Jodugullapalem. Tenneti park is one of the oldest and the first children park in the city and is located beside of sea shore of Bay of Bangal.

City Central Park

City central park is also know as urban park which is situated in Visakhapatnam, India. The park is located in the heart of the city. The park is spread in 22 acres and it was inaugrated by the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh N. Chandrababu Naidu. The first musical fountain of Andhra Pradesh is also located in the city central park.

Ross Hill church is one of the biggest attraction in Visakhapatnam that draws tourists and followers in big numbers. Bojjannakonda

Bojjannakonda and Lingalakonda are two rock-cut Buddhist caves which can be found near the village Sankaram which is 45 kilometers away from Vizag. As per the historical data, this site exists from past 4th and 9th ADs.

Victory at Sea Memorial

Victory at Sea War Memorial was built in 1996 after the Indo-Pakistani war in 1971. The war memorial is dedicated to the Indian Navy and Eastern Naval Command soldiers. Located on the beach road, it can easily be seen from far. If you are visiting RK beach or INS Kursura Museum, this place is near to it.

Gangavaram Beach

Gangavaram is used to be a village of Andhra Pradesh whos area now comes under the Greater Visakhapatnam Corporation. Before the construction of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, there was a town called Gangavaram. So, the name of the beach is named after that town. Gangavaram village was removed from that place and people were sent to two different places.

TU 124 Museum was established with the vision of preserving the Tupolev TU-142 Aircraft. This was established in 2017 by the India President Ram Nath Kovind. TU 142 served Indian Navy for 29 years with 30,000 hours of accident-free flying. Government of India spent over 14 Crores to preserve this legendary Aircraft.

Made entirely of natural karstic limestone, the caves are kaleidoscopic in nature, and the light falling on the rocks coupled with the waterfalls creates an extremely colourful effect, lending an aura of magic and mysticism to the entire ambience. The Katiki Waterfalls, situated a short distance away from the Borra Caves, is a gushing waterfall that measures around 50 feet in height and is completely surrounded by the lush greenery of the valley. The crystal-clear water cascading down the rocks, bordered by the gleaming green foliage is a sight for sore eyes. 2. Indira Gandhi Zoological Park

One of the largest zoological parks in Andhra Pradesh and spread across 625 acres of land, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is a part of the Kambalakonda Forest Reserve. It houses around eighty species of animals.

Places to Visit in Vizag: Museums & History

1. submarine museum.

Being the only submarine museum in Asia, it is situated on RK Beach inside India’s INS Kurusura submarine. It provides great insight into the lives of naval officers who survive in these spaces with limited resources.

The submarine has many articles and pictures and tells stories of the sacrifice and strength of its occupants. The INS Karuna has served India for about 31 years and was decommissioned in 2001.

2. Visakha Museum

Opened in 1991, Visakha Museum is housed in a 150-year-old Dutch bungalow with impressive architecture. Situated on the shores of RK Beach, the museum showcases the historical treasures and artefacts of this region.

The collections include ancient armoury, crockery, coins, silk costumes, jewellery, stuffed animals, portraits, the shell of an unexploded bomb dropped by the Japanese during World War II and much more.

3. War Memorial

This was constructed after the Indo-Pak war in 1971. It is dedicated to the Indian Navy. It is located on Beach Road, opposite the Submarine Museum.

4. Matsyadarshini Aquarium

Matsyadarshini Aquarium is on the shore of Ramakrishna Beach. It is an initiation by the Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation and showcases the marine life of different species.

Species include longhorn cowfish, butterflyfishes, surgeon major, peacock wrasse, lionfish, stonefish, red squirrelfish, perch dusky, triggerfish, clownfish, damsels, sweet lip rabbitfish, angels, electric ray, porcupine fish and many more.

5. Vizag Harbour

Bojjannakonda, originally known as Buddina Konda, is a series of Buddhist rock-cut caves dating to a time between 4 th Century AD and 9 th Century AD. This was a time when Buddhism was a major religion in this part of the country. It is situated in a village called Sankaram, which is 21 km from Visakhapatnam.

This small group of six rock-cut caves, with beautifully carved statues of Lord Gautam Buddha, monasteries, and monolithic stupas, is one of the most famous Buddhist establishments in Andhra Pradesh. Each cave also has engraved pillars depicting the principles of Buddhism. A life-size figure of Lord Gautam Buddha in meditation pose, 2000-year old prayer halls, and the monasteries here are testimony to the fact that these caves were used by Buddhist monks for prayers and meditation. The site also has a Maha Stupa with a dome made of bricks.

Fringed by paddy fields, Bojjannakonda is quite popular among devotees, peace-seekers, and tourists.
