Hoodoo Guru’s Announce 40th Anniversary Tour And New Single
Iconic Australian garage punk/rock outfit Hoodoo Gurus return to stages across Australia this December in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of their first live show, with special guests The Dandy Warhols.
Frontier Touring have announced the return of legendary Australian rockers Hoodoo Gurus to stages across Australia this December. The announcement celebrates Hoodoo Gurus 40th Anniversary since their first live show in 1981. Plus, it celebrates the release of their new single, World Of Pain (out today via Universal Music Australia ).
“We are thrilled to be going around Australia to play for our fans again. Even better, we are honoured to be accompanied by our admirable friends, The Dandy Warhols from the US. Between the two of us, there are gonna be plenty of opportunities for crowd singalongs. After the turmoil of the last year and a half, that’s gonna be incredibly therapeutic for everyone. You can be certain that both of our bands will be fired up and rarin’ to go.”
The Gurus kick off the tour at Brisbane’s Riverstage on Wednesday, 1 December, before heading to Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Friday, 3 December. Next up is Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on Saturday 4 December, before heading across to Adelaide Entertainment Centre Theatre on Thursday 9 December. They then close out the tour at Perth at the Belvoir Homestead & Amphitheatre on Saturday, December 11.
The band’s new single World of Pain is another hard-hitting new Gurus single. It’s the perfect follow up to last year’s freshly-minted Gurus classics Hung Out to Dry and Get Out Of Dodge “. Dave Faulkner describes World Of Pain as “a combination of glitzy glam rock and dirty barroom blues. It has a swagger and a cocky attitude, although the song’s narrator is clearly having a very bad night. The poor sap – he thinks he’s having fun!”
Faulkner continues: “World Of Pain is a slightly fictionalised story about the aftermath of a big night on the town that got way too big. I’ve personally lived out everything described in the song (I’m not proud of that fact). Luckily for me, the events described in the lyrics didn’t occur in exactly this order or over the one night. Nevertheless, it’s all true. Oh, and before you ask, the answer is: yes, I have been punched in the face in a nightclub when I was a bit drunk one night.”
World of Pain is out now on all streaming services .

Hoodoo Gurus announce rescheduled 40th Anniversary Tour dates
The shows were recently postponed after drummer Nik Rieth contracted COVID-19
Hoodoo Gurus have announced the rescheduled dates for their 40th anniversary tour with The Dandy Warhols , after being forced to postpone earlier this month following an outbreak of COVID in their camp.
On April 1 it was reported that the band’s drummer, Nik Rieth, had contracted COVID-19 , resulting in the Australian rock veterans’ postponing their nationwide tour for a second time. As close contacts of Rieth, the entire band were self-isolating as a result.

Hoodoo Gurus’ David Faulkner said in a press statement that the band’s COVID emergency “put everyone in a ‘World Of Pain’,” referencing the band’s latest single, lifted from tenth studio album ‘Chariot Of The Gods’ .
“It took a small army of people working overtime to get this tour back on track,” Faulkner said. “We are incredibly grateful for all your hard work. We also want to thank everyone who has been holding on to their tickets in expectation of today’s announcement.
“Thanks for your patience – we promise you that the wait will be worth it. See you in September.”
Tickets for all original shows remain valid at the new dates, however tickets can still be purchased here . Find all tour information below.

Thanks for your patience - we promise you that the wait will be worth it. See you in September.”
Sahara Herald of Frontier Touring says: “There’s a lot of hard labour behind the scenes that goes into promoting and producing a tour, and it sadly takes just as much effort to undo all that work and start again. Due credit to the publicity, marketing, ticketing, travel, freight and production teams as well as the venues and ticket agents around the country who have worked tirelessly to turn this around and maintained a level of patience and passion for what they do despite the challenges and long hours. But I especially want to thank the punters who have hung on to their tickets and recognise the hurdles we’ve overcome to get the show back on the road - thanks for sticking with us.”

“… the Gurus swing from melodic power-pop (My Imaginary Friend) to crunchy guitar rock (I Come from Your Future), and even sprinkle good ol’ psychedelia dust on the title track … This album captures some of that vintage Gurus energy and the mood on their earliest album, Stoneage Romeos” – The Age/SMH
“Hoodoo Gurus goes on the attack, sword in hand, and slays the competition. …Hoodoo Gurus cheekily defies the challenge of the passing years.” – Muzzart (France)

Hoodoo Gurus Announce 40th Anniversary Australian Tour With The Dandy Warhols
By Caitlin Medcalf
Aussie rock legends Hoodoo Gurus are heading out on tour this December in celebration of the 40th anniversary since their first live show back in 1981. Not only that, but they’ve also got a new single out today via Universal Music Australia titled ‘World Of Pain’.
Their national tour will hit major cities around the country over five nights, and as an added bonus, US indie-rockers The Dandy Warhols are set to come along on the tour too.
“We are thrilled to be going around Australia to play for our fans again,” the band said in the official press release. “Even better, we are honoured to be accompanied by our admirable friends, The Dandy Warhols from the US.
“Between the two of us, there are gonna be plenty of opportunities for crowd singalongs, and after the turmoil of the last year and a half, that’s gonna be incredibly therapeutic for everyone.
“You can be certain that both of our bands will be fired up and rarin’ to go.”
The tour will kick off on Wednesday, 1st December in Brisbane, before heading off to Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and closing out in Perth on Saturday, 11th December.
In 40 years, the band have amassed nine ARIA Top 20 albums, 9 ARIA Top 40 singles and a bunch of multi-platinum albums. Hoodoo Gurus are planning on releasing their first record in a decade this December, so fans at their live shows are in for a real treat.
Frontier Members can cop pre-sale tickets from 2PM AEST on Wednesday, 26th May before tickets go on sale to the public from 2PM AEST on Friday, 28th May.

Hoodoo Gurus Brisbane review: 40th anniversary tour
Hoodoo Gurus’ pandemic-delayed 40th anniversary tour finally came to Brisbane, and they weren’t afraid to chance their hand at some new stuff.
J Lo’s big move amid brutal career downturn
‘Painful’: Fans unhappy with band’s Oz show
Singer seen vaping at Sydney Airport
If they’re not rock dinosaurs they’re at least Stone Age Romeos.
Hoodoo Gurus finally hit a brimming Riverstage in Brisbane on Tuesday night for their pandemic-delayed 40th anniversary tour.
And as they explored their extensive back catalogue – “We’re covering all the bases tonight, ticking all the boxes,” said frontman Dave Faulkner – there was uncertainty over which songs were from their “early” versus their “prehistoric” era.
“There’s only early times with us,” Faulkner quipped.
With a support act as esteemed as The Dandy Warhols it might as well have been a double bill, with NSW’s The Buoys (who are actually girls) ably rounding out the line-up.
As for the Gurus the long locks are long gone, but while Faulkner now vaguely resembles former Queensland premier Campbell Newman he’s still poles apart politically, preaching gender nonconformity on new song Hang With the Girls .
The audience usually likes the old stuff better than the new stuff, and while most of the old favourites got an airing, the band reserved the right to play several tracks from latest album Chariot of the Gods .
And most were upbeat, getting some reaction from the crowd, though the full-on singalongs came from classics such as Bittersweet, 1000 Miles Away, What’s My Scene and the obligatory closer Like Wow – Wipeout .
Brisbane-bred guitarist Brad Shepherd assumed lead vocals on Equinox , but not before joking: “Is it Kingsland now, I don’t know what the protocol is. Too soon?”
He was resplendent in see-through floral shirt with a gold pendant resting on his exposed chest.
Faulkner, for his part, sported a plasticky reflective shirt.
They might not have played “right up to the second” of the 9.50pm curfew as promised, but there was nary a dissatisfied punter in sight.
Hoodoo Gurus’ 40th anniversary tour continues through the southern states this month.
Setlist: World of Pain, Tojo, The Right Time, Out That Door, Don’t Try to Save My Soul, Death Defying, Hang With the Girls, In the Wild, I Want You Back, Chariot of the Gods, My Girl, Come Anytime, Equinox, Poison Pen, Bittersweet, Miss Freelove ’69, 1000 Miles Away, I Was a Kamikaze Pilot . Encore: Leilani, What’s My Scene, Like Wow – Wipeout.

Hoodoo Gurus Stoneage Romeos 40th anniversary edition
Hoodoo Gurus ‘Stoneage Romeos’ Turns 40
by Paul Cashmere on March 28, 2024
Hoodoo Gurus debut album ‘Stoneage Romeos’ turned 40 this month. The album was released in Australia in March 1984 and in the USA in September 1984.
While ‘Stoneage Romeos’ was eventually certified Gold in Australia the album only reached no 29 on the Australian album chart. It did however give Hoodoo Gurus their first Top 40 hit with ‘My Girl’.
Dave Faulkner said, “When we were in the studio making ‘Stoneage Romeos’ we felt like kids in a candy shop, throwing all manner of instruments and “ear-ticklers” into the mix as we attempted to squeeze all our musical influences on to one album. It got a bit unhinged at times but producer/engineer Alan Thorne kept a cool head and a steady hand. Together, we captured something special and it still sounds great to me.”
The 40th Anniversary edition is sure to whip up a frenzy with fans and will include the original album reissued as a picture disc as well as some seriously collectible additions.
Also included in the special edition package are:
1984: Live at the Chevron (12” vinyl) featuring the band’s 1984 performance at the Chevron Hotel in Sydney which marked a pivotal moment in their early career. Originally recorded and broadcast by the ABC, this iconic concert is being released for the first time, with reimagined art as a Zoetrope vinyl which will turn the turntable into a mesmerizing portal where the prehistoric characters come to life. Collectors, take note: this concert recording will not be made available on any streaming platforms so this will be your only chance to own this rare artefact!
Hayride to Hell (7”), a track originally slated for inclusion on Stoneage Romeos, but held back because of its country feel (how much diversity can one album have?!). Hayride To Hell has an intriguing history with the accompanying Part 2 being recorded during a London radio session for John Peel’s show in 1987. Significantly, the single cover displays an illustration by Reg Mombassa, marking the debut of his distinctive artwork on the band’s record sleeves. This single will also only be available exclusively as a part of this limited edition reissue.
Poster (A2) featuring a striking Sandy Edwards image complemented by Debbie Baer’s hand-drawn elements, this poster is a replica of the band’s first poster (when they were still called le Hoodoo Gurus) and is vivid depiction of Sydney’s creative energy in the early eighties. On the reverse, Australian music journalist Toby Creswell explores the band’s origin and their whirlwind rise from a NYE party to the creation of their debut album, Stoneage Romeos, complemented by some early Tom Takacs photos of the band.
Postcard / Mini Poster was originally crafted by Dave Faulkner for a double bill the band played with The Scientists in 1982. The artwork features an anatomical Dalek image sourced from an old Doctor Who Annual Dave discovered in an op shop (he was, and still is, intrigued by the unexpected details revealed in the Dalek’s cross-section).
The 40th Anniversary vinyl Stoneage Romeos set is released on Big Time Recordings thought Universal Music Australia on Friday, 17 May 2024.

It’s been a long time between drinks for the Hoodoo Gurus , but after more than a decade, the iconic Sydney rock outfit have announced the release of their new album, Chariot of The Gods .
Last releasing a new album by way of 2010’s Purity of Essence , the Hoodoo Gurus have been far from lazy, with countless live shows peppering the last 12 years, and rumours of new music arriving at every turn.
In 2019, they began to share some new tunes by way of “Answered Prayers”, before more material – including the Donald Trump-inspired “Hung Out to Dry” , “Get Out of Dodge”, and “World of Pain” – followed soon after. Now, most of these tracks are set to appear on the group’s forthcoming album, with Chariot of The Gods set to arrive on March 11th.
“The last twelve months have been frustrating and nerve-racking for everyone but, for the Hoodoo Gurus, this dark cloud has had a silver lining,” explains Dave Faulkner. “Forced to rely on ourselves instead of the outside world for validation, there has been a creative rebirth within the band that has resulted in a string of singles and a new album.
“Most important of all, the musical bonds between the four of us have never been stronger,” he adds. “When the discussions are all about which songs we’re sad about having to leave off the record, that’s a damn good sign. “I’m tellin’ ya, folks, we’ve got a real spring in our step right now.”
Released on March 11th, and available for pre-order now, the record will be available on CD, vinyl, and digital formats, with the vinyl edition including three bonus tracks by way of “Obviously Five Believers”, “I Wanna Be Your Man”, and previous single “Hung out To Dry”.
To celebrate the release of the record, the Hoodoo Gurus are set to preview their new album with a special live concert stream, delivered by eMusic Live, and recorded at Damien Gerard Studios on the NSW Central Coast.
Streaming at 8pm AEDT on Thursday, March 10th, the stream will give fans a chance to chat with the band during the stream, and is is designed both as a special album preview and a thank you to loyal fans around the world who have experienced cancelled tours by the band over the past two years. Tickets to the stream are on sale now .
Meanwhile, the Hoodoo Gurus will also coincide with the group’s long-delayed 40th anniversary tour , which is scheduled to kick off in early April. Full details are available below.
