Ray Luzier (Korn) Doug Pinnick (King's X) George Lynch (Lunch Mob/T&N/Dokken)

A new musical force to be reckoned with is about to turn the rock world upside down with the release of their self-titled debut, KXM. KXM is comprised of dUg Pinnick of King's X on vocals/bass, George Lynch of Lynch Mob/Dokken on guitars and Korn's drum maestro, Ray Luzier, rounds out the powerhouse trio. The band takes its name from the combination of the member's other projects: K from Korn, X from King's X and M from Lynch Mob.

The self-titled debut of KXM is something truly unique and special. The songs are powerful, precise, and transcend beyond the boundaries of the imagination. In today's overpopulated music arena, true gems become harder and harder to find, but KXM's unified vision rises above the normal and creates its own space. From the opening drum riff of "Stars" to the final chord on "Human Friction," KXM is an album that is sure to resonate with fans from the band's original projects, while garnering new ones as well. Songs like "Gun Fight," "Faith Is A Room" and the first single "Rescue Me" are sure to be instant favorites among fans. The band shows their softer side on the ballad "Never Stop" along with their dark side on the tale of domestic violence, "Sleep."

KXM formed in early 2013 when dUg, George and Ray spoke about trying to jam together. At the time it wasn't clear what would come from those jams. The only thing that was clear was that these three musicians, at the top of their game, wanted to play together. The self-titled debut, KXM, was born from those jam sessions and is now an important piece in each band member's musical legacy. In a world that constantly searches for new and unique music, KXM delivers all the power and punch that one would expect from these high level players!

KXM – Self-Titled (Album Review)

kxm tour

The album starts off with Stars . It begins with a somewhat tribal beat and a guitar riff that’s heavy on the effects. Then it happens. After the full band comes in, you know immediately that this album is going to be different. The power, the tone, the drum work…oh my goodness the drum work. The dropouts in the verses, the melodies, dUg Pinnick’s voice. Everything is perfect. The track is called Stars and they have definitely aligned for it.

Rescue Me is up next and it’s the lead single off the album. While the opening riff is gigantic, the song, at its core, isn’t all that heavy. That certainly doesn’t detract from the song, but it’s just an observation. dUg delivers a chorus that is reminiscent of early King’s X , in the fact that the backing vocals create a nice bed for him to lay down his soulfulness. His bass tone is as thick as Kim Kardashian , but that chorus balances out the heavy. Ray Luzier is the star of this track for me. What can I say? “Wow” is the word that comes to mind. Let’s just leave it there.

Gunfight is one of the tracks used in the teaser videos. There’s a reason for that, which is the fact that this is probably the most complete song on the album. When I say complete, I mean in the sense that it sounds more like a band that’s been together for years, not just for a project. While the music follows along with Ray (who is once again amazing), and dUg does his thing, it’s George who shines on this track. From his machine gun sounding riffage to the extremely befitting solo, he shines like never before. Now I’m not one to bring politics into things. I leave the social commentary to the news makers, but I will say that there’s a message here. Just open your ears and eyes. dUg expands on this in an upcoming interview that we’ll have for you next week.

For me, those first three songs were an appetizer. They broke the ice and prepared me for the main course. Now the first item on the menu is Never Stop . This track is the most intriguing on the album. It’s a bit of a southern rock style ballad and a difficult one to describe. The song, as explained by dUg , is about someone close to him that has had their issues with drugs. The song itself is a setting in which I can’t recall ever hearing dUg in, and it’s absolutely stunning. You will love this song, if only for the fact that they took the chance to create it.

Faith Is A Room is probably the song that sounds most like a King’s X song, which is a-okay by me. The melodies and repetitive backing vocals are, for me at least, the bread and butter of the particular sound that makes dUg so unique. George’s solo on this track is also my favorite on the album. Fantastic song!!

I’ll Be OK is the track that truly showcases Ray Luzier . I find myself continually focusing on his drumming in this song, particularly his high hat and cymbal work. The song itself is a really driving heavy hitter that has its moments to showcase each member. George’s solo in this one is probably the most extended one on the album and is a close second to the aforementioned one in Faith Is A Room .

Sleep is the most compelling story on the record. As I myself witnessed spousal abuse as a child, this story really connected with me. The slow churning song sets a mood like no other on this record. The haunting, almost creepy backing vocals accentuate the points and help highlight the idea that women should simply not be completely submissive and never be subjected to an insecure, piece of shit, abusive man. It’s never okay to strike a woman, and hopefully this song can empower just one woman in a similar situation. This song is the main course on the menu.

After the groove oriented Love and the bombastic Burn , KXM brings a sound that only they could create. Do It Now is full of guitar effects, killer riffs, huge melodies and thunderous drums. Be careful with this one, though. I nearly deployed my airbag playing drums on my steering wheel, all while driving a little too fast. Yes, old lady at her mailbox, I slowed down. Now put away that condescending finger you shook at me, please.

Human Friction is the last track with vocals. As the momentum builds, dUg’s “Kardashian” tone returns before all hell breaks loose. Mr. George Lynch , you, sir, are a badass. After settling into a groove oriented verse, the chorus explodes once again into this stop/start masterpiece that allows dUg to display the soulful side of his voice. If this song doesn’t get your head bobbing, I give up.

Ending the album is our dessert for the evening. Tranquilize is a funkadelic, psychedelic tasty treat that’s full of jazzy backbeats, funky bass lines and a ton of great guitar licks. THIS is what I envision it would be like to sit in the room with these guys during the writing process. An impromptu jam session with each musician pushing the others to greatness.

Overall, I’m honestly not sure that George Lynch has ever sounded better. His tone is just so full, thick and simply badass. I suppose the level of musicianship in this band has truly brought out the best in George , and that’s saying something, as Mr. Lynch is certainly no slouch on the guitar. Ray Luzier has suddenly became one of my favorite drummers on the planet, and this is all topped off by the voice and bass of a man I’ve cherished musically all my life in dUg Pinnick ? Yes please!!

Let me sum up what it’s like to listen to this album quite simply: Sit down or be put on your ass. The choice is yours.

And to answer the question from the beginning of this article; I am far from being letdown. Buy it. Love it. Spread the word. This album deserves to be heard!

KXM Featuring KORN, KING’S X and Ex-DOKKEN Members Announce New Album “Circle Of Dolls” for Next September

kxm tour

KXM , the band featuring bassist/vocalist Doug “dUg” Pinnick ( KING’S X ), guitarist George Lynch ( LYNCH MOB , DOKKEN ) and drummer Ray Luzier ( KORN ), will release its third album, Circle Of Dolls , on September 13 via Rat Pak Records in the U.S. and Frontiers Music Srl in Europe. The disc was recorded at Steakhouse Studio in North Hollywood, California with co-producer/engineer Chris Collier , who also helmed the group’s first two releases.

“Circle Of Dolls” is currently available for pre-order via the Rat Pak website in various bundle configurations, including turquoise-and-black splatter vinyl, cassette and hand-autographed CD packages.

Luzier comments: “There’s a certain energy that happens in the studio very quickly when George , Doug and I get together and jam. This is our third record and it was recorded with the same formula as the first two albums — no pre-written ideas; we just come up with totally fresh grooves and riffs and not overthink anything. We definitely didn’t repeat ourselves, but you know for sure who it is when you hear it. All three records have their own unique character.”

Lynch explains: “It’s better than the first two albums. It’s insane. The magic is there, the chemistry’s there and we’re just sitting here patting ourselves on the back, telling each other what geniuses we are.”

Pinnick adds: “I hope everyone enjoys listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it.”

From the infectious riff of the album opener “War Of Words” to the album finale of “The Border” , KXM has yet again created something truly special and musically diverse. Songs like “Lightning” , “Big As The Sun” and “Cold Sweats” are sonically different from each other taking the listener on a musical journey. Circle Of Dolls is a darker record, thematically, than KXM ‘s first two albums and builds upon the band’s established rock sound with thought-provoking lyrics, catchy guitar riffs and rock-solid grooves.

ALBUM REVIEW: KXM – Circle of Dolls

Rat pak records - september 13th 2019.

17 August 2019 Mark Diggins

kxm tour

Its a brave experiment even for three supremely talented musicians to hatch a plan to jam together in a studio with no preconceived notions of what will eventuate except in setting a goal to create one new song (minus lyrics and lead breaks that come later) per day. But that’s exactly what George Lynch, Dug Pinnick and Ray Luzier have done for a third time now to stunning effect.

The resultant album ‘Circle of Dolls’ (read our interview to find out how the name came about) is a little darker than its predecessor and the equally wonderful debut, but that in itself adds another subtle layer to the mix. What’s clear on ‘Circle of Dolls’ is that musically there’s a huge amount of chemistry at work. Interestingly too it’s also an album that takes you on a journey and Luzier’s running order (all three agreed on opener ‘War of Words’) gets it just right too.

There’s a relentlessness to that opener ‘War of Words’ that is offset by it’s non traditional structure, and up against the jazzy vibe to the opening of ‘Mind Swamp’ which itself is offset against angular guitars and laid back vocals and an expensive ‘soundtrack’ guitar solo makes the most sublime of openings.

‘Circle of Dolls’ that follows is more straightforward, a slow shuffle that is almost grungy replete with Stone Temple Pilot melodies (maybe the Luzier connection with the DeLeo brothers?) It’s those melodies that become more uplifting towards the chorus, which itself cruises on a cool guitar pattern and busy drums, whilst all the spadework and accents are done by the great vocal that drives it all. It’s a great three card trick to open with.

As the album progresses the flow is just sublime: ‘Lightning’ offers up a slow, infectious jangling groove and ‘Time Flies’ sweeps out of the traps before languidly dipping its toe into a pool of sound before it soars again; whilst ‘Big as the Sun’ sees Luzier tap out a rhythm that’s built up from that initial ‘clay’ by Dug and George, its song you can almost feel evolving as you listen.

Deeper in ‘Vessel of Destruction’ is again given depth by Luzier’s drum patterns while Lynch anchors it and Pinnick riffs and wails, it’s a great example of the free flowing nature of these songs. ‘A Day Without Me’ that follows has an initial acoustic swampy blues feel that’s pulled to the banks by Dug’s vocal and George’s big dirty riff before ‘Wide Awake’ stands as the soundtrack to waking from a dream.

The album runs out with three fine tracks that even threaten to overshadow what has come before them plus a bonus radio edit of ‘War of Words.’ ‘Shadow Lover’ has an otherworldly feel that you really need to hear and ‘Cold Sweats’ meanders and sweeps around a cool lyric with harmonies that are cut through with Lynch’s guitar. The last song (a closer that all three agreed upon) the hypnotic and topical ‘The Border’ is a timely reminder that music this good has to be played and heard live. Check out our interview with Ray to find out more about the possibility of that.

Circle Of Dolls is scheduled for release on September 13 th  via Rat Pak Records.

A powerhouse rock trio featuring members of Lynch Mob, King's X, and Korn, KXM employ a bluesy brand of driving hard rock infused with a prog-like tendency for wanderlust. Founded in 2013 around the talents dUg Pinnick of King's X (vocals/bass), George Lynch of Lynch Mob and Dokken (guitar), and Korn's drum maestro, Ray Luzier, the hard-hitting trio participated in extensive jam sessions to prepare for their eponymous debut album. The resulting KXM, released via Rat Pak Records, arrived in 2014 and featured a sound that managed to resonate with fans of their flagship groups while exploring new sonic territory. 2017's Scatterbrain adopted a similar approach, and cracked the Billboard Top 100, as did 2019's Circle of Dolls, the latter of which saw the combo move to Frontiers Records. ~ James Christopher Monger

REVIEW: KXM – “Circle of Dolls”

  • August 31, 2019
  • 2 minute read

kxm tour

Hopefully by now, you are aware of the band called KXM which includes drummer Ray Luzier (Korn), bassist/vocalist dUg Pinnick (King’s X), and guitarist George Lynch (Lynch Mob). The three magicians are back for another mindbending round of hard-hitting rock music with their new release called Circle Of Dolls on Rat Pak Records.

Circle Of Dolls follows the same evolutionary path as their self-titled debut and Scatterbrain. Eschewing pre-production, the band gathers in the studio over the course of two weeks. They then set about to write a song per day. The end result is a diverse and captivating collection of music.

I’m floored when I listen to Circle of Dolls realizing that each song is written in a single session. It reveals not only each musician’s superb talent, but it also showcases the vibrant and creative relationship that they enjoy. Listening to each song, you get a glimpse of the artistic playground within KXM.

KXM kicks Circle Of Dolls into high gear with the bruising “War of Words”. Ray Luzier and George Lynch set this off with an alluring drum pattern teasing a guitar as it is yowling and pinging. The dampened sound effect with the intro gives you the feeling that you are outside the studio door as the instruments play. The door opens and the full rock treatment hits you in the face. It is high paced and fun.

You get a sense for the introspection and grit of this album on the song “Mind Swamp”. A foggy intro of guitars chimes, throbbing bass, snare pops and stick rolls lulls you. The urgency escalates into a culmination of snapping and snarling guitar to form the main riff. You can imagine the feeling of stomping through the twisting thoughts within your mind.

My favorite track on Circle Of Dolls is “Shadow Lover”. This off-kilter tune sounds like a spy novel. You can feel the rain in a dark alley. dUg’s hushed and reverb-laden vocals add to the air of mystery. The cascading drums provide that sense of restless searching. Once again, I’m amazed at how these three musicians paint these intriguing pictures in such a short period of time.

Circle Of Dolls by KXM is a hard-rocking multifaceted gem of an album. The band continues to deliver a variety of delicious sonic tastes to tempt your palate. The overall approach remains heavy, yet there is a sense of brooding introspection. Don’t be afraid of the dark. Instead, revel in it. This is your chance to get inside the minds of some of rock’s finest musicians and explore.

Album Spotlight: KXM – Scatterbrain

kxm tour

Review of the new album by KXM – Scatterbrain, out on March 17th, 2017.

Supergroup KXM, featuring the trio of dUg Pinnick (King’s X), George Lynch (Lynch Mob), Ray Luzier (Korn), are back with a new album, Scatterbrain.  The follow-up to their successful debut from 2014, finds the band continuing along a similar path but expanding upon their brand of Hard/Prog Rock with more intensity and a few musical surprises.  There is no denying these three stellar musicians gel together like few side projects can.  Interestingly, while Pinnick possesses the Prog cred, it is Luzier and Lynch that add just as much punch and technicality to the music, making for an intriguing mix.

The album opens with the hard hitting title track, a reference to the scattered nature of the band’s musical outlook.  Immediately the outstanding production is noticeable, especially Luzier’s signature drum sound that emphasizes the bass drums.  His use of double bass in unlikely moments adds to the aggressive nature of the track.  Luzier’s talent as one of rock’s best drummers is not recognized enough.

One of the album highlights comes with the second track, “Breakout”.  Generally, anything Pinnick sings will have a King’s X sound or vibe to it.  This track particularly so, with its use of dissonant vocal harmonies during the chorus, one of the signatures of his home band.  Pinnick sounds as good as ever belting out screams as if he was back in 1990.  Lynch’s guitar solo is melodic and captivating, fitting perfectly.  Luzier goes nuts on the drums during the fade out, worth checking out.  This is an outstanding track.

Throughout the album the group tear thru a number of hard rock songs, each with their own dynamic moments, from the chorus in “Big Sky Country”, to the reggae breakdown in “Not a Single World” wear Lynch supplies a tremendous solo, to the bluesy closing ballad, “Angel”.

KXM are the real deal, a group of musicians that are brilliant musicians and songwriters.  While not a Prog album necessarily, any fan of well played and produced rock will enjoy this album.  Get Scatterbrain and play it loud.

Released on March 17th, 2017 on Rat Pak Records

Watch: KING'S X Performs In Houston, Texas During Spring 2023 U.S. Tour

The RichG LIVE   YouTube channel has uploaded video of KING'S X 's May 27 performance at the RISE Rooftop in Houston, Texas. Check out the clips below.

The power trio, which has been in existence for more than four decades, will play the following additional shows this spring and summer:

Jun. 8 - Kiva Auditorium at the Albuquerque Convention Center – Albuquerque, NM Jun. 10 - The Armory Performing Arts Center - Brighton, CO Jul. 13 - The Orange Peel - Asheville, NC Jul. 15 - Brooklyn Bowl Nashville - Nashville, TN Jul. 16 - Buckhead Theatre - Atlanta, GA Aug. 3 - Sellersville Theater - Sellersville, PA Aug. 4 - Count Basie Center for the Arts - Red Bank, NJ Aug. 5 - Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts - Patchogue, NY Sep. 8 - Robins Theatre - Warren, OH Sep. 9 - The King Of Clubs - Columbus, OH Sep. 10 - Blue Note Harrison - Harrison, OH

In a November 2022 interview with Metallerium , KING'S X frontman Doug "Dug" Pinnick spoke about the decline of the music industry as consumers value access over ownership and experiences over assets. Asked how the industry has changed since his band released its debut album, "Out Of The Silent Planet" , nearly three and a half decades ago, he said: "It's pretty completely different. [ Laughs ] When our first record came out, there was MTV and there was radio, and that's what everybody listened to. And now there's not a lot of radio airplay and there's no MTV . So there's a whole new world and several new generations of kids out there that have a different take on the world, have different experiences that I'll never have.

"Music always progresses," he continued. "In the 1980s, they invented a drum machines, and so drummers had to deal with a drum machine. We learn with whatever comes our way. People don't buy CDs anymore — they stream — so there's no money to be made on streaming, so you go on tour to make money and you sell your merch. There's always ways to make it work if you really wanna do this."

Less than a year ago, Pinnick told Reno's rock radio station Rock 104.5 , that KING'S X has "never been profitable. We've never recouped all the [funds] that the record companies put into us," he revealed. "Even [our current label] InsideOut , we owe them a couple of hundred thousand [dollars], 'cause they haven't recouped from the last couple of records. [Our former label] Atlantic Records we owe five million or four million to — something like that… Three — I'm not sure. It's in the millions somewhere they spent on us. Everybody that's ever signed us has always lost money, and so we've never made any money off of record sales. The only way we make a living is going on tour, and hopefully when people come to see us play we'll get a paycheck for that and merchandise. And KING'S X fans love to buy our merch 'cause they know that that's what supports us. But other than that, sometimes — well, not sometimes. We all have to do outside things to make ends meet."

He continued: "I just do side projects. I go get a record deal and pay the bills for a couple of months. Ty [ Tabor , guitar] masters things; Jerry [ Gaskill , drums] does stuff. None of us go to nine-to-five jobs; we don't do that. But something about what we can do. We have value in the marketplace, so we can do clinics, we can do things like that. Or I do handwritten lyrics — KING'S X lyrics that I wrote, I'll write 'em out on black paper in silver ink, sign it and put a date on it. I've written hundreds of them. … So it all works out. And at my age now, I get social security. And when I started getting social security about three years ago, that's when I stopped worrying because my social security will pay my rent. The rest of it I can do. I can get on a street corner and play guitar and I can get five dollars. I can call a friend up and say, 'Hey, I ain't got no money. Can you feed me today?' And they'll say, 'Yeah, let's eat.' But paying your rent — you want your rent paid; you don't want to depend on other people. And also I have a dUg [signature] pedal and I have a signature bass and a 12-string bass, and people buy 'em. And so every now and then I get that six-month check, which helps. So it's all good."

KING'S X released its 13th studio album, "Three Sides Of One" , in September. The LP was recorded during 2019 at Black Sound Studio in Pasadena, California with Emmy Award -winning producer Michael Parnin .

The new KING'S X LP was mastered in June 2021 at the Bernie Grundman Mastering facility in Hollywood, California,

KING'S X was sidelined by several health scares in recent years, including Pinnick 's two hernia operations and two near-fatal heart attacks suffered by Gaskill .

In October 2019, KING'S X canceled all of its previously announced tour dates for the year so that Gaskill could undergo undisclosed heart "procedures."

"XV" was KING'S X 's highest-charting album since 1996's "Ear Candy" .

In 2005, VH1 included KING'S X in its list of "100 Greatest Artists In Hard Rock.
